Dive into summer with two new exhibitions celebrating contemporary photography at the Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art. Selina Román: A Liminal State and The Museum Project open to the public Sunday, April 29, 2018, with eighty photographs on display combined between the two exhibitions. Selina Román captures the quirky, darker side of Florida and the spaces in between, while The Museum Project showcases a recent donation of contemporary photographs by nationally known artists Barry Andersen, Darryl Curran, Robert Fichter, Suda House, Sheila Pinkel, Bonnie Schiffman, Michael Stone and Robert von Sternberg, who pioneered experimental techniques in black-and-white and color photography.

GALLERY TALK

THURSDAY, JUNE 21 6:00 – 8:00 PM

Seductive and mysterious, the characters in Selina Román’s photographs offer an intimate, yet unsettling glimpse into a transient world full of the colors and glittering textures of vintage Florida. Through more than fifty photographs and props, Selina Román: A Liminal State explores the ambiguous, underlying narratives found in the spaces between the quickly vanishing glamour of old Florida and the temporary feeling of the artist’s native state. Selina Román: A Liminal State features four series of color photographs, in which Román explores a transitional state of being by combining different facets of the Florida landscape, interior spaces and experimental narratives. Using formal and conceptual methods such as staged and straight photography, appropriation, and video, Román confronts established perceptions and norms, and offers a new framework for contemplation. .

"An Evening with Selina Román"

Image: Selina Román, Revelations in Purgatory No. 2, 2013, archival inkjet print, 24 x 36 in., courtesy of the artist.

In this exhibition, Román’s playful juxtapositions of costumed bathing beauties with sparkling props in the natural Florida landscape hint at a bygone era. Other works explore the quirky side of Florida by pulling back the curtains on the idyllic beauty and outside perceptions of this beautiful but transient state. Román also uses vintage, Florida motel rooms as her studio and muse to personify a temporary, or liminal, state of being. A selection of images from the Please Disturb: LRMA Edition series features a collaboration between the artist and LRMA community members, and includes props Román uses to immerse visitors in her experiences.

The Museum Project Changing Exhibition Galleries APRIL 29 – SEPTEMBER 23, 2018

A distinguished group of American artists established The Museum Project in 2012 to express gratitude for institutional support of, and commitment to, photography as an art form, and began donating work to museums and public collections throughout the country. In 2016, The Museum Project invited the Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art to participate. After several months of reviewing more than 400 images and consulting with St. Petersburg College photography faculty, the museum selected fifty-four photographs that aligned with its mission and scope. This donation has made a significant impact on LRMA’s contemporary photography collection as an educational resource for students, scholars and the public. A selection of thirty photographs from the donation will be on display.

Photographs by Barry Andersen, Darryl Curran, Robert Fichter, Suda House, Sheila Pinkel, Bonnie Schiffman, Michael Stone, Robert von Sternberg and Melanie Walker reflect a multitude of contemporary perspectives, diverse styles, concepts and photographic processes. These artists have pioneered experimental techniques in traditional and digital formats and have contributed to the contemporary photography movement through their work as fine artists, documentarians and university professors.

education

Inspired by Internal Landscapes: The Mysterious World of Steven Kenny Inspired by Steven Kenny's artwork, The Clockmaker's Wife, Tarpon Springs Boys & Girls Club children in the museum's ArtHaven program enjoyed decorating wood birdhouses with art therapist Maryanne Hamilton. They used a variety of materials to construct and personalize their birdhouses, including paint, eye-catching silver tinsel, beautiful pop-up stickers, sparkling rhinestones, and alphabet beads. The birdhouses were then placed on display in the Challenge of Modern Art Gallery during Kenny's exhibition.

Visitor Artwork

.

Following a docent-led tour through the museum's galleries for the seventh and eighth graders of Madeira Beach Fundamental, LRMA's Education Assistant Nina Rivera conducted a surrealist-themed art activity with the help of LRMA docent, Jeanette Sixbury. Provided with a sheet of paper divided into three sections, each of the students were organized into groups of three and collaborated to create their own "exquisite corpses" - a technique pioneered by the surrealists in the early 1900s. Keeping their work concealed from their group members the whole time and rotating their papers among themselves after each section was finished, these creative students used their imaginations to draw a unique head at the top, a body in the middle, and legs and feet at the bottom. Upon completion of all three sections, the groups could finally open up each of their folded papers and behold the hilariously bizarre creatures they brought to life together!

Visitors of all ages can create artwork in the Challenge of Modern Art Gallery, where easels, paper, markers, graphite and colored pencils are available at the designated art stations. Those who choose to leave their work at the museum allow others to discover and admire what they made, such as this stunning marker portrait of Vincent van Gogh paired with a meaningful quote. 5

Leverage Your Charitable Giving: Donations of Stock

Annual Fund Party An "Annual Fund & Friends" celebration was graciously hosted at the home of John & Nancy Monteleone in late March. LRMA thanks all who contributed to this fund in support of LRMA's annual operations!

giving

ANNUAL FUND

One of the most cost-efficient ways to support the programs, exhibitions, and future of the Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art is through a gift of stock. The donation of appreciated stock is a simple process, and offers many benefits to you. Including: •

No obligation to pay capital gains taxes on the appreciation

The total value of the stock is tax-deductible upon transfer

You can donate appreciated stocks, bonds, or mutual funds

The benefits of this charitable-giving strategy are clear. Please contact your financial advisor for individualized guidance. If you have any questions, or would like to review your intentions, please contact Ann Larsen at 727-712-5225.

.

Leave a Legacy The Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art is grateful to individuals or couples who have included LRMA in their estate plans. Legacy gifts can be made in the form of a bequest by naming LRMA not only in your will or trust, but also in a charitable remainder trust, gifts of life insurance, or other charitable planning vehicles. Your gift, both large and small, can have a profound impact on the museum for many years to come. We encourage you to talk with your financial advisor about planned giving options. You may also contact Ann Larsen at 727712-5225 for more information. 9

news Staff Announcements The museum wishes to thank two staff members for their service, as they depart to pursue other opportunities. Connor Davis, Development Officer, is moving with his family to Washington State, and Lilian Norris, Community Relations Specialist, is leaving to return to work exclusively in the creative field. We wish them both well in their new endeavors!

Linda McBriarty—a licensed optician with a love of art--recently joined the staff as a weekend Visitor Services Associate. Linda loves assisting people in Isabelle's Museum Store and at the front desk, and looks forward to meeting many more of our weekend visitors.

Japanese Performance Art

.

On March 15, 2018, Master of the One-Stroke Dragon Keisuke Teshima returned to LRMA to perform for an audience of two hundred students, faculty and staff, and members of the community. Teshima’s awe-inspiring performance began with meditation before he launched into painting in gold watercolor. Without lifting his brush from the paper a detailed dragon emerged. Support for the event was provided by SPC Tarpon Springs campus Student Life & Leadership and the Center for International Programs. Based in Kyoto, Japan, Teshima is one of only four artists in the world to master the One-Stroke Dragon painting technique. His work was featured in the East Meets West: New Japanese Traditions exhibition in 2017 and he recently donated a large painting to the LRMA collection.

Volunteers Honored During National Volunteer Week in April the museum honored and thanked its valuable volunteers— from Board members to Visitor Services Desk staff—with lunch in the Interactive Gallery.
