UPCOMING EXHIBITIONS 44th Annual International Miniature Art Show North and South Galleries JANUARY 20 - FEBRURARY 10, 2019

The Miniature Art Society of Florida celebrates its forty-fourth year with a spectacular exhibition of more than 600 exquisite miniature works from around the globe and more than 100 miniatures from the Society’s permanent collection. Throughout the duration of the exhibition, visitors have the opportunity to talk to and observe artists while they demonstrate their techniques including oil painting, scrimshaw, drawing, sculpture and more. Many artists create their work under magnification, using a variety of mediums and methods and the tiniest of brushes for paintings. Demonstrators may come from as far away as England, Canada and across the United States and Florida. Images from left: Clifford T. Bailey, Last Glimmer, oil, 3 1/2 x 4 1/2 in., courtesy of the Miniature Art Society of Florida. June Holloway, Into Deep Waters, oil, 3 x 5 in., courtesy of the Miniature Art Society of Florida.

Rocky Bridges: Small but Mighty Florida Hospital North Pinellas Wall JANUARY 13 - FEBRUARY 10, 2019

To complement the Miniature Art Show, we celebrate all things small with a popup exhibition of small-scale, mixed-media works and wearable art pins from the museum’s collection by Tarpon Springs artist Rocky Bridges. Rocky Bridges, Untitled, c. 2000-2010, mixed-media, 9 1/4 x 6 in., gift of Cleta Clark, 2018.3.34.

UNEXPECTED: Art by Alternative Means Featuring Nathan Beard, Akiko Kotani and Rob Tarbell North, South and Center Galleries FEBRUARY 24 - MAY 19, 2019

Three contemporary Florida artists use alternative processes to create unique work based on drawing and memory. Nathan Beard explores his family’s lineage through a labor-intensive process using tape to create undulating layers of painted patterns. Fiber artist Akiko Kotani creates drawings with silk thread, explores markmaking on glass, and crochets “melting walls” from plastic. Rob Tarbell harnesses the elusive medium of smoke to create ethereal portraits on paper and porcelain. Images clockwise from bottom left: Rob Tarbell, Basel Stabber 1, 2016, smoke on paper, 60 x 40 in., courtesy of the artist. Nathan Beard, Exit Music #30, Red Shift, acrylic on canvas, 47 x 53 in., courtesy of the artist. Akiko Kotani, Roll, silk stitched on paper, 80 x 45 x 10 in., courtesy of the artist.

David McKirdy: From the Collection Works on Paper Gallery FEBRUARY 3 - MAY 19, 2019

A selection of mixed-media works on paper by Tampa artist David McKirdy complements UNEXPECTED: Art by Alternative Means. McKirdy’s background in biology and scientific illustration fuels his inspiration to create abstract works made of elaborate dot patterns. Through painstaking processes, he experiments with a variety of materials to create these interactive works, which engage the viewer through optical illusion.

David McKirdy, Mirror, Mirror, 2014, mirror and mylar, 11 1/4 x 11 1/4 in., gift of Cleta Clark, 2018.3.7.

ANNUAL FUND LRMA’S Annual Fund Campaign: Why Your Gift Matters

Since opening in 2002, we have provided our community with stellar artistic experiences: inspiring and thought-provoking exhibitions, opening night receptions, gallery talks by noted artists and scholars, docent tours, music in the galleries, field trips and art activities for pre-K through grade 12, an interactive space for use by children and families, studio art and art appreciation classes for lifelong learners, art therapy programs for at-risk children and young adults, and more. In addition to our status as a nonprofit organization, we are proud to be an integral part of St. Petersburg College. The funding model is based on a combination of college and community support, reflecting our commitment to both. For the college, we operate as a learning laboratory for students and a collaborator with faculty to integrate the arts into a broad range of collegiate subjects. In addition, LRMA staff and volunteer docents provide assistance to students with class assignments. Our commitment to education includes free admission for children, teens 17 and under and enrolled college students. Earned income from memberships (with many benefit tiers), admission fees for non-member adults, museum store sales, fee-based courses and workshops, and fundraising events help to cover a portion of our operating expenses, but certainly not all. With this Annual Fund Appeal, we are asking for your support to continue the array of educational, inspiring, and even priceless experiences for our broad and diverse public. Please make an Annual Fund gift at a level within your means; all gifts help, and donors giving $100 and up will receive an invitation to a special appreciation event in early 2019.
