SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS SPC Visual Arts Faculty Exhibition OCT. 7 – DEC. 30, 2018 North and South Galleries

Have you ever wondered what teachers do during their summer break? This fall we go back to school showcasing new work by St. Petersburg College visual arts full-time and adjunct faculty members, who, in addition to serving as educators, are practicing artists. This biennial exhibition offers an array of different styles, media and two and three-dimensional work that showcases the breadth and expertise of SPC’s arts faculty. This year faculty members have taken their work in exciting new directions through opportunities in personal and professional artistic growth. Many faculty members developed new work over the summer, had the opportunity to travel, participated in nationallyrenowned artist-in-residence programs, and some were awarded grants to bring major projects to completion. Others explored new ideas through inter-disciplinary themes that developed into multimedia installations in the LRMA galleries. These important individuals are continuing a tradition at St. Petersburg College dating back to the 1950s: to prepare, shape and inspire the next generation of artists. The College offers both Associate of Arts (AA) degrees, for transfer into advanced visual arts programs, and two-year Associate of Science (AS) degrees in graphic and digital arts, as well as photography technology. Courses taught at the College include drawing, painting, ceramics, photography, printmaking, digital arts and multimedia.

Marjorie Greene Graff: 21 Years in Printmaking OCT. 7 – DEC. 30, 2018 Center Gallery

In the Center Gallery, SPC Visual Arts faculty member, Marjorie Greene Graff, reflects on her tenure as a professor of art and printmaker. A selection of Graff’s colorful relief block prints shows the scope of work done throughout her twenty-one-year career. Focusing on ambiguous landscapes, Graff filters her experiences and travels through a personal lens and reveals the essence of a place through her prints. Also included in the exhibition are sketchbooks, printmaking tools, and print proofs and plates showing the artist’s process in reduction wood block printing. Graff has helped develop SPC’s printmaking program into a thriving department by teaching a range of printmaking techniques, bringing in guest artists, and utilizing LRMA’s galleries and Resource Center as a learning lab to enrich the student experience. Graff will be retiring from SPC in October 2018.

A recreation of Rattner’s studio includes vintage furniture, art materials, and sketches from LRMA’s extensive archives. In the Galleries

Over the summer, eight-year-old Alissa Chadwick visited the museum with her mother Bethann Chadwick. While her mother worked on an art assignment in the galleries, Alissa enjoyed some drawing time in the Challenge of Modern Art Gallery.

ABC Reading Club Changes The ABC Reading Club has made formatting changes to enhance the program. The Club will begin meeting on third Mondays at 11:30 rather than Fridays at 1:30, and they will gather in the museum’s Challenge of Modern Art Interactive Gallery rather than the Resource Center. These changes will allow members to meet in the galleries when the museum is closed and to enjoy snacks, beverages or a bag lunch during discussions. Other changes, beginning in January 2019, include a return to six discussion meetings per year, a focus on all art periods rather than on the modern and contemporary eras, and a format featuring occasional guest speakers to enrich discussions.

Two books – Pablo Picasso: Breaking All the Rules and Modern Art Adventures: 36 Creative, Hands-On Projects Inspired by Artists from Monet to Banksy – have been added to the children’s library in the Challenge of Modern Art Gallery.

Magnetic Word Wall Extending along the right wall of the Challenge of Modern Art Gallery is a magnetic surface populated by a wide variety of word magnets. Visitors are encouraged to arrange and combine these words to convey whatever it is they wish to communicate – cryptic phrases, fleeting memories, abstract thoughts, or enigmatic poetry.

Visitor Artwork Visitors of all ages can create artwork in the Challenge of Modern Art Gallery, where easels, paper, markers, graphite and colored pencils are available at the designated art stations. Those who choose to leave their work at the museum allow others to discover and admire what they made, such as these three pieces created using markers. 5

Selina Román Concealed Photoshoot 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

In this age of Facebook, surveillance and instantly-uploadable videos, we are always being watched. Our identities have morphed into commodities, and our sense of community is experienced electronically. Artist Selina Román wants to give you your privacy back. Take part in Concealed, a photoshoot where you will have your portrait taken. The catch? You must completely cover your face and not reveal any of your facial features. From simply using your hands to cover your face to creating an elaborate headpiece, let your cover reflect your personality, as well as your feelings about society’s thirst to know and see all. Through the act of concealing their faces, sitters will deny the world their identity via the permanence of photography. Although sitters’ faces won’t be seen, their covers, clothes and gestures will likely reveal more than their facial expressions. (Participants are encouraged to bring their own props, and they will have a Polaroid of themselves to take home.)

TFO (The Florida Orchestra) On the Go at Leepa-Rattner Museum 3-4 p.m.

To celebrate its new season with the community, The Florida Orchestra will blitz Tampa Bay with more than a dozen free chamber concerts in two days including one at LRMA on Museum Day. Priceless experiences happen every day at LRMA, for students and visitors of all ages! For each of the past five years, St. Petersburg College has challenged the museum to assume incrementally-greater responsibility for the museum’s operating budget. We are proud to report that we have met this challenge so far through admission fees, an enhanced array of membership and sponsorship categories, museum store sales, fundraising events, program sponsors, and our very important Annual Fund Campaign.

giving

ANNUAL FUND

When you make a contribution to the Annual Fund, you help the museum cover some of the less glamorous but essential costs of operating an accredited museum—such as insurance, storage and perpetual care for works in our permanent collection, and essential personnel that are required for operational support but are not funded by the college. Please consider a 2018 Annual Fund Gift in any amount, online at https://www.leeparattner.org/support/annual-fund/ or by mail to: Annual Fund, Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art, Inc., P.O. Box 1545, Tarpon Springs, FL 34688. As in past years, all donors making a gift of $100 or above will receive invitations to a special appreciation event at a private residence in early 2019. Thank you for helping us continue to make priceless experiences happen every day!
