UPCOMING EXHIBITIONS Dive into summer with two exhibitions celebrating contemporary photography. Selina Román captures the quirky, darker side of Florida and the spaces in between, while The Museum Project showcases photographs by nationally known artists who pioneered experimental techniques in black and white and color.

Selina Román: A Liminal State Changing Exhibition Galleries APRIL 29 – SEPTEMBER 23, 2018

Seductive and mysterious, the characters in Selina Román’s photographs offer an intimate, yet unsettling glimpse into a transient world full of the colors and glittering textures of vintage Florida. Selina Román: A Liminal State explores the quickly vanishing glamour of old Florida and the temporary feeling of the artist’s native state. Román’s voyeuristic approach allows her models, who are often transformed into faceless alter egos, to experiment with props and costumes. Featuring her Florida motel room series, Please Disturb, the exhibition includes some of Román’s props, to immerse the visitor in her experiences, and photographs from a collaboration with members of the LRMA community in July 2017. .

Born in Florida in 1978, Román trained as a print journalist and spent five years in Miami at an international security and investigations firm. She immersed herself in Miami’s fashion industry where she shot fashion campaigns for a local designer and honed her personal photographic style that mixed elements of fashion and reportage. Román received her Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of South Florida in 2013. Her work, which questions ideas of perception, power, protection and femininity, is in numerous private collections.

The Museum Project was established in 2012 by a distinguished group of American artists who donate their work to museums throughout the country to express their gratitude for the institutional support of photography as an art form. After spending several months culling through more than 400 images, the LRMA curatorial staff selected fifty-two photographs from nine artists for donation to the museum’s contemporary photography collection. The collection reveals a multitude of contemporary perspectives, diverse styles, concepts and photographic processes. Participating artists, such as Darryl Curran, pioneered experimental techniques while others are known for their unique style, as reflected in Bonnie Schiffman’s celebrity portraits, which have been featured on Saturday Night Live and in Rolling Stone magazine. The Museum Project has donated more than 3,000 prints to 130 institutions throughout North America, Australia, and France.

ONGOING EXHIBITIONS Internal Landscapes: The Mysterious World of Steven Kenny Changing Exhibition Galleries THROUGH APRIL 15, 2018

Focusing on the beauty and mystery of the natural world, Steven Kenny’s paintings illuminate the bonds between humans and nature through a surrealist context. Allowing the subconscious to emerge, the surreal and symbolic juxtapositions of man versus nature become strangely harmonious as the artist journeys into the human psyche. Internal Landscapes: The Mysterious World of Steven Kenny features fifty paintings by this renowned surrealist painter. In this contemporary museum setting, Kenny’s jewel-like, surreal scenes are displayed in intimate vignettes, which highlight themes and symbolism prominent in his work. The fine craftsmanship and lush color palette of Kenny’s paintings lure the viewer into a world where reality is not as it appears but as he understands it. Left: Steven Kenny, The Gate, 2013, oil on canvas, 29 ¾ x 25 ½ inches, on loan from the Wooden Shoe Collection Right: Steven Kenny, The Fisherman’s Bride, 2016, oil on canvas, 40 x 26 inches, on loan from Private Collection

Let’s Get Surreal: Works on Paper from the Collection Works on Paper Gallery THROUGH APRIL 15, 2018 .

Featuring works from the permanent collection, Let’s Get Surreal explores the Surrealism movement through printmaking by influential artists such as Salvador Dalí, Stanley William Hayter and Paul Klee, who were prominent figures in the movement in Paris in the 1920s and 30s. Also on display are contemporary surrealist artists from Cuba, Colombia, France and Denmark, which marks the widespread influence of this movement well into the 1980s.
