SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS Paradise Found: LRMA Celebrates 15 Years

June 4 – September 24, 2017 | Changing Exhibition Galleries In celebration of the Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art’s fifteenth anniversary, we are showcasing the best of the collection, unveiling new acquisitions, honoring donors and artists, and digging into the vault to unearth never-before-seen works. This two-part series begins with a summer-themed exhibition that pays tribute to our beautiful area in Paradise Found: LRMA Celebrates 15 years. The idea of paradise, bathing beauties, fun in the sun, and the unique qualities of tropical locales in Florida and beyond are interpreted by artists in various mediums throughout the decades.

Steven Kenny, The Arrival, 2012, oil on canvas, 72 x 60 inches, Gift of the Artist, 2017.1

From the coast of 1930s France to the modern shores of St. Petersburg’s white sandy beaches, the sun, sand and sea life are the subject of exploration as we journey from abstraction to surrealism in vivid color. Luminous beach watercolors by David Burliuk and Abraham Rattner transport you to paradise, while fish fly through surreal tropical scenes in a print by Alexander Calder and a watercolor by Bill Renc. The color and light of summer is conveyed through the pure abstraction of Kenneth Noland’s minimalist shaped canvas painting, as well as Richard Anuszkiewicz’s Op Art interpretation of Clearwater Beach’s blinding spectrum of sunlight. Also featured are new acquisitions that capture the essence of summer including photography by Selina Romàn, glow-in-the-dark Japanese painting by Koki Sugita and Steven Kenny’s painting The Arrival. Painted in 2012, Kenny’s larger than life oil painting of a boy in a fur coat on the beach represents a self-portrait, of sorts, as a northerner’s perspective arriving in an exotic new land, having moved from New York to St. Petersburg, Florida. So, put on your sunglasses and escape the heat in our air-conditioned tropical paradise!

UPCOMING EXHIBITIONS Fall into Greatness: LRMA Celebrates 15 Years October 8 – December 30, 2017 Changing Exhibition Galleries

Fall into Greatness: LRMA Celebrates 15 Years will be the second part of the series commemorating the museum’s anniversary with themed exhibitions that highlight new acquisitions, honor our beloved donors and showcase the best of the collection with works by Pablo Picasso, Christopher Still, George Inness, Sr., Leonard Baskin and many more. We will also invite renowned local artists included in the permanent collection to explore the vault and share what inspires them about the museum in a collaborative exhibition.

A glimpse into the inner workings of Rattner’s studio offers insight into his process through an immersive installation of his original furniture and never-before-seen drawings, journals and photographs from his archives. 2

Postcards from the Edge with Allen Leepa

“Dear Esther and Abe, … Looking at some apts. and houses for rent today, but probably will not rent here. Will leave, instead, for Gibralter on Friday AM, spend night there and take boat to Tangiers Saturday AM…to sample N. Africa… Love, Allen P.S. Get Herald Tribune here.” May 26, 1962, Fuengirola, Spain

“Dear Esther and Abe, Well, my ptg. is picking up a little—after about 25 sketches—at least I’m a little more encouraged today. Sun most of the time but it’s cool & good working weather… Takes time to build up the tempo, et al, in order for something to happen on canvas. Love, Allen” June 28, 1962, Almuñécar, Spain

Habits & Habitats Series: Working in Paradise & Postcards from the Edge with Allen Leepa June 4 – September 24, 2017 Center Gallery

Working in Paradise offers a unique glimpse into the life of Allen Leepa through an installation of his art studio, vibrant paintings and sketches inspired by summer hues, and his adventures around the world. Through postcards sent to Abe Rattner and Esther Gentle in the 1960s, Leepa shares in his own words various tales of his summer travels while working on paintings and sketches abroad. The postcards shed light on Leepa’s artistic process, as well as his devotion to Esther and Abe. Habits & Habitats is a new exhibition series that provides insight into the artist’s perspective, their daily habits, and an intimate look into their personal space. Offering a more well-rounded view of the artist, this series is intended to create more of a personal connection between the audience and the artist by touching on other parts of the artist’s life and thought process for a deeper level of understanding. Allen Leepa Character Drawing, L.A.W., 1974, ink on illustration board, 20 x 16 inches, Allen Leepa Archives, Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art

Mitchell, Jr., City of Tarpon Springs, Dr. Marcia Makris & Charlie DeGrandpre, Banther Consulting, Patricia Miller, Elizabeth Nace, Barbara Schnipper and Catherine Wargny for their support of our exhibition schedule. 3

FROM THE ARCHIVES

ONGOING EXHIBITIONS

Digging deep into the archives of Abraham Rattner, Esther Gentle and Allen Leepa, we look into the past through the eyes of three prolific artists. The LRMA archives offer a behind-the-scenes look into personal moments and significant projects in-the-making. This selection features Allen Leepa through the decades. A vintage photograph of Dr. Leepa in 1959 speaks volumes about the man as an artist, author and educator. In 1969, Leepa received a letter from the assistant curator of the Hirschhorn Foundation regarding images for his forthcoming book about Rattner. A 1980 snapshot shows Leepa working on a public art commission to paint a mural in the Ingham County Prison gymnasium in Michigan. Believing that art could facilitate change, he designed the mural to capture the energy of athletics in abstract form. This female portrait in watercolor is one of the most vibrant pages in Leepa’s sketchbook while he stayed in Paris in the summer of 1981. Visitors have the rare opportunity to view the sketchbook in Habits & Habitats Series: Working in Paradise & Postcards from the Edge with Allen Leepa through September 24th.

The LRMA Docent Corps – Exceeding Expectations The LRMA Docent Corps, a volunteer group, includes wonderful men and women who continually rise above and beyond the call of duty. After the museum’s Education Assistant left in February, docent Greg Rosasco stepped in and managed tours for the Education Department. His help was invaluable. Twelve groups, including elementary school students, adult community groups and SPC classes, visited in March alone. We are grateful for Greg’s time, support and outstanding service--which he accomplished while still serving as a very active, tour-giving docent. Docents also perform hours of research for presentations such as Focus Friday. This monthly first Friday program, held in the Made in Florida Gallery, requires docents to research Greg Rosasco leading a tour and present a work of art in the collection. In February, Kimen Mitchell investigated Sam Gilliam’s screenprint Double Dutch, printed at the former Berghoff-Cowden Editions founded by Lois Berghoff and Dorothy Cowden. Berghoff and daughter Linda, artist, printmaker and SPC instructor, helped Mitchell with research. In March, Nancy Hensel and Marcia Makris tackled Barbra Oosting’s Polaroid transfer, Postcard to Pop Beeler, and invited Oosting to the program. To everyone’s delight, the artist attended and talked about processes and themes in her work. Last, docents enjoy introducing friends, family, locals and tourists to the museum and bring in many new members. Linda Berghoff, Lois Berghoff, Kimen Mitchell

Reaching Out Remotely In January, the museum collaborated with Pinellas County Schools and tested “Double,” a telepresence robot for reaching students unable to attend school. Robert Cory, a Hospital Homebound/Teleschool teacher, brought the device, which resembles a Segway topped with an iPad, to the museum and through a live feed captured docent Gail Simon giving a tour. Up to five users may receive the feed on their computers. “They can see, hear, text, talk, and display emoticons on the screen. There is no other way we have found for students in isolation to be able to go out into the community,” said Cory, who also tested the robot in a third grade class for a hospitalized student. Double Robotics, a California company, created the robot.

ABC Reading Club Update The museum’s ABC Reading Club, which has met every other month since its founding in 2009, began meeting monthly in January. Now, members can attend special presentations during the alternating six months. Please see the Happenings page for upcoming programs and the next exciting book selection.

For Please Disturb sessions, Román uses old-style motel rooms as a studio to photograph subjects dressed in outlandish outfits or staged among whimsical props. According to Román, these images are like “a love letter to Florida” and reflect a time and place slowly fading away. For Please Disturb: LRMA Edition, Román will use the Tarpon Shores Inn on US Highway 19 on Friday, July 21, to photograph participants. On Saturday, she’ll share her Friday experience through a video montage at LRMA. She’ll also discuss her photograph, Lean, which is part of the museum’s collection and on view in the Paradise Found exhibition. LRMA is planning a follow-up exhibition with Selina Román in the summer of 2018. 15 Years of Volunteer Service “Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.” ~Elizabeth Andrew LRMA is very fortunate to have many priceless volunteers and docents to whom we owe a huge amount of gratitude. Amazingly, LRMA has several long term volunteers who have been part of Marilyn Holl our family since the very beginning. Some volunteers assist staff at the front desk greeting guests and welcoming them to the museum. Other volunteers go through the docent training program and take an active role in leading tours and interpreting art. Still other volunteers play important roles behind the scenes. They remain deep in the heart of the museum and rarely surface to the gallery floors. This edition we feature steadfast volunteer, Marilyn Holl, who is just one of these special people. Marilyn first heard about the need for museum volunteers at the Tarpon Springs St. Petersburg College campus back in the fall of 2001. She applied and was accepted into the volunteer program. Fifteen years later she still assists the Curatorial and Collections Management staff in accessioning objects, completing condition reports, locating pieces within the vault, doing inventories, and a lot of filing. Occasionally she assists in the galleries with installations and the changing of exhibitions as well. When asked what made her want to volunteer at LRMA, she replied “An opportunity to give my time to our underfunded art community.” “I thoroughly enjoy coming to LRMA,” Marilyn says. “The staff are very pleasant and supportive of volunteers and it has been interesting to see how the museum has evolved over the years.” Contemplating the future, Marilyn looks forward to continuing to volunteer for at least a few more years.

How exciting to be celebrating LRMA’s fifteenth year! We kicked off with a birthday party and community open house in January, and from June through December our exhibitions will reflect works from our permanent collections—including some that have rarely or never been shown! We have come a long way in a short time towards fulfilling our mission of using our expanding collection to engage and inspire our diverse community through education, enlightenment, interpretation and research. Many of you have been with the museum since its inception, and we thank you for your steadfast interest and support. As a 15-year member myself, I remember responding to the first open call for volunteers from the community; how thrilling it was to become an actively-engaged member of the stunning new museum! Many friendships have been formed in the process of “growing” our museum, and our members’ opening receptions remain wonderful opportunities to come together as friends and neighbors as each new exhibition is revealed. To those of you who’ve joined us more recently, I hope you’ll take full advantage of our changing exhibitions and members’ receptions, Sunday docent tours, educational programming including guest artist talks, panel discussions, classes and workshops, book group, children’s programs and special offerings… and get to know our other members, staff and volunteers! Warm regards, Ann Larsen
