Founded in 1985, the Breast Cancer Awareness month (October) was established to increase awareness about breast cancer and raise funds to aid its research. Then in 1993, Evelyn Lauder, Estée Lauder VP, established the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and the pink ribbon as its symbol. Ever since, people and companies have been participating in this cause to minimize and control the damage of breast cancer, which accounts for 40,000 deaths in the US making it the second leading cause of cancer death in women. However, statistics in the Middle East are much harder to come by as, sadly, breast cancer is still considered a taboo here, despite its spread and threat. At Dazzle we take a step towards this cause and hope that, one day, women of the Middle East would see it for what it is and get the proper treatment they deserve. We sorted out fact from fiction about this unexpected disease in ‘Breast Cancer: Myths Versus Facts’, and we also shed light on another form of cancer - skin cancer, which is quite lethal but easily curable in its early stages, in Skin Cancer 101. On a brighter note, our inspiring cover celebrity, Taylor Swift, epitomises how hard work and perseverance pay off, and we included all the latest A/W trends and buys for you along with our usual essential features for a dazzling life. Yet, there’s still so much more in store for you. So, go on, indulge…

Taylor Swift Sees Red & Stays Country By Kip Kirby

In just seven years, Taylor Swift has become a household name and a global phenomenon. She has won CMA’s Entertainer of the Year twice (2009 and 2011), been named Billboard’s Top Artist of the Year (2013) and taken home Album of the Year honours at the 2010 Grammy Awards - the youngest artist and the first female solo Country artist ever to do so. (Her Grammy total stands at seven, her CMA Awards at six.) Time has named her one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World. Rolling Stone has featured her twice on its cover. She writes or co-writes all her songs, has topped multi-genre

radio airplay and digital download charts around the world, and appeared in Hollywood films and hit TV shows. She runs 13 Management, and is involved in every component of her publishing, recording, concert production, and endorsement deals. She’s also just 23 years old - and having the time of her life. Whether sharing the stage with Tim McGraw and Keith Urban on ‘Highway Don’t Care’ at this year’s CMA Music Festival, playing for 80,000 screaming fans at London’s Wembley Stadium, or harmonizing onstage with Mick Jagger at a June Rolling Stones

concert in Chicago, Swift sees her success as an opportunity to promote Nashville and the music she loves. In fact, that’s one of the reasons she makes overseas touring a priority. “Going outside of your comfort zone geographically is not an easy thing, you know,” she explained during a break in a typically busy day. “It’s something a lot of artists don’t like to do. You can be at one stage of your career in America and then have to start over in another territory. But we started doing that about five years ago, and I’m so thankful we did because now we can go over there, and we

“My fans have always been amazing and emotional” play arenas in Europe and we play stadiums in Australia. It’s been amazing to see how my music has thankfully worked in Europe and Asia and the places we’ve gone and that we’ve gone out of our way to go. It’s amazing to look out into a soldout crowd of people who don’t speak English yet they’re singing along to every word of your songs. The fact that

it’s paid off in that way makes me so proud to be from Nashville. It’s an investment I’m so happy we made.” Swift also sees evidence of Country Music’s international reach much closer to her Nashville home. “Last time I was at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, I noticed that almost everyone walking through was from Europe

or Australia or New Zealand,” she said. “And that made me so happy. It makes me so proud to see people in other countries curious about Nashville and singer/ songwriter music and Country Music.” She’ll see many more very soon. In November, The RED Tour heads to Australia and New Zealand, where she will become the first solo

Spectacular female artist in 20 years to headline stadium dates there. Taking the risk to play stadiums whenever possible, rather than multinight arena dates, was a calculated decision. “Taylor is an incredibly important client of The Messina Group, one of our

subsidiaries,” said Randy Phillips, President and CEO, AEG Live, which handles Swift’s domestic and overseas concert promotions. “And she’s an anomaly because selling out stadiums is not an easy thing to do. She’s one of the very few who can do it successfully in multiple markets. The demand for Taylor is absolutely coming from the fans, and you can’t fake demand. It’s either there or it isn’t. Her audience wants to see her, and they don’t mind going to a stadium to do it. “She’s the ultimate hyphenate,” he continued. “She genrecrosses like no other artist. She wants to experiment and look at different markets. Obviously her roots are Country, but her success is crossing over into

many markets. She’s unique. If you want to call her an ambassador for Nashville, then she’s certainly the first real international ambassador Nashville’s ever had. That’s a huge statement for Country Music. “Her connection with the audience is incredible,” Phillips summed up. “Very few performers can achieve that thing where the wall between them and the audience disappears. But she’s one of them. That’s an important part of the story, that at this stage of her career, Taylor is able to sell out stadiums. Who would have predicted that just six years ago?” Share this with Swift, and she will agree. “I’ve been really lucky with my other tours,” she allowed. “But being on this tour, the screaming and passion level with the fans has hit a fever pitch. My fans have always been amazing and emotional, but this is something completely new for me. It’s more than it’s ever been before. Every single night when I’m about to get on the elevator lift and walk out onstage, it’s a feeling of, ‘I can’t wait to get out there and do my job.’ I’ve always known I wanted to work constantly until I could make a career in music, but even when I dreamed about having a career in music, I don’t think I ever envisioned the crowds being larger than theatres or possibly arenas. In my wildest dreams, I don’t think I ever saw anything like this!”

Pregnancy Loss: Coping With It

Be it miscarriages or stillbirths, the loss of an unborn child is very traumatic for women, both physically and emotionally. And while the body heals relatively quickly after the mishap, the hardest part is accepting the loss and moving past the grief, says Hafsa Mahfooz…

Dealing with the loss is the hardest on the mother because she develops a bond with the baby even before the birth. Thus, the grief she feels is often not understood by others, including her own husband; this results in feelings of isolation and selfblame. More often than not, she feels guilty and blames herself for the mishap. Jihan*, 29, felt terrible after having a stillbirth pregnancy. She explained, “I blamed myself for the longest time for the way things turned out. All I could think about was where I went wrong and what I could have done differently. I felt lost, confused, and completely shattered.” 14

OCTOBER 2013

Such a traumatic experience often leads to fear; women feel so overwhelmed by their loss that they feel scared to go through another pregnancy and experience the same pain all over again. Furthermore, they feel anger, jealousy, and resentment towards new mothers because of the way things turned out for them. Jihan concurs, “Two of my friends were also due to deliver around the same time as me, but I couldn’t get myself to be a part of their happiness. Just the thought of them holding their babies would kill me on the inside, so I kept my distance from them.” Pregnancy losses also affect men on a deep emotional level. Not only are they shattered by the loss, but they also grieve for their partner. This makes it difficult for them to communicate openly with their spouse. Consequently, they avoid talking about the loss, fearing that it may upset her. “No matter how hard I tried to turn to my husband for support, he never wanted to talk about it and I was left to pick up the pieces all by myself. Not being able to get through the loss with him by my side really made matters worse for me,” explained Jihan. Actually, dealing with such a painful loss can cause

a couple to drift away from each other. If you’ve lost a pregnancy, the guilt, fear, sadness, jealousy, anger, and loneliness are perfectly normal human emotions and it’s okay for you to feel them. Sadly, there is no fixed amount of time that you need to get over the loss because the grieving period differs from one couple to another. While some may accept the loss within a couple of months, there are many who remain scarred for years at a stretch. As hard as it is, the sooner you acknowledge your grief and learn to let it go, the better it is for you, your husband, and your future. Here are some ways to help ease the pain: Get Your Facts Right The first thing you have to do is understand that the pregnancy loss was not because of something you did or didn’t do. Pregnancy complications can strike anyone, so stop blaming yourself for how things turned out. If you feel the need to get closure, ask your doctor about what exactly caused the loss and how it can be prevented in the future. Revisiting the painful loss won’t be easy, but it will give you the answers you’re looking for.

*Names have been changed.

Pregnancy losses bring about feelings of grief, shock, depression, anger, and a sense of failure in the days, weeks, and even months that follow, making the coping process highly painful and difficult. What adds to the grief is having to break the news to others, which constantly reminds us of the loss and all the dreams and aspirations that vanished with it. As a result, we shut ourselves out from the rest of the world and look inwards for answers, without realising that a loss of such a magnitude cannot be dealt with alone.

Talk It Out Keeping your feelings bottled up inside will only make the grieving process more painful, so talk about your experience as much as possible. Though it may seem painful to talk, sharing your story will help you heal faster as you won’t be dealing with it alone. In fact, most women find it frustrating to talk about the loss because their loved ones don’t seem to understand. If you feel like your family isn’t giving you the support you expect, understand that those who haven’t gone through such an experience can’t understand what it’s like. So try not to take it personally when they say the wrong thing or nothing at all because they’re only trying not to upset you more. Understand His Pain While it may seem like your husband isn’t affected as deeply as you, understand that men and women grieve differently. Women tend to talk their problems out and look

for support, while men keep their feelings to themselves and deal with loss on their own. Furthermore, men feel the need to take care of their partners by remaining strong, so don’t confuse his rough exterior as indifference. Give him some space and allow him to deal with the loss in his own way. Write It Down Maintaining a journal is a very effective way of dealing with such a loss because it allows you to share your feelings openly and honestly. In fact, studies have shown that journal writing can speed up the healing process as it enables people to be completely honest about their inner most feelings. Consider writing an anonymous blog because not only will it help you release your emotions, but it will also help others who’re going through a similar experience. Take A Break

Going back to the same life after the traumatic loss can be extremely painful and overbearing, so take some time out from your usual routine and focus on getting yourself together. However, don’t shut yourself out completely and try involving your husband as much as possible because he also needs closure. Set aside some intimate time for the two of you to stay connected with each other. Take Your Time Moving past the grief is not something you can do in a day or two, so don’t pressure yourself to get over the pain quickly. As time passes, you’ll find that some days will be more difficult than others, so don’t be too hard on yourself for not being able to let go as fast as you would expect. There’s no denying that the hurt will remain, but with time, things will change for the better and you’ll be able to cope with your loss. www.dazzle-magazine.com

Personality

Colour Your Mood From daring and assertive, to calm and composed, the colours you wear affect your mood. Find out how you can change your mood with different hues… Seeing or wearing a colour can change our mood, both on a conscious and subconscious level. And while certain colours evoke positive emotions like happiness, comfort, and excitement, others bring about feelings of power, sophistication, and passion. Thus, the colours we choose say a lot about how we feel, and express how we would like to feel. All colours have a powerful effect on the body, the intensity of which depends on the individual, the purity or saturation of the hue, and the extent of colour use. Black Timeless and classic, black is the colour of authority and power. The colour evokes assertiveness, independence, and mysteriousness, and its wearers are viewed as grounded, powerful, in control, protected, confident, and fearless. On the flip side, black garments can sometimes be overpowering, making people uncomfortable and unsure about the wearer’s personality. They may view the person as aloof or evil, since black is usually associated with negativity. White White symbolises innocence, purity, simplicity, cleanliness, peace, humility, precision, and youth. It purifies the body on the highest levels, and surrounds the wearer in peace and comfort. However, wearing too much of this clean and restful colour will

16

OCTOBER 2013

appear stark. Red Known as the most emotionally intense colour, red stimulates faster breathing and heartbeat, while stimulating the immune system. It evokes action, passion, and boosts energy, making it ideal for those who tend to procrastinate. Due to it’s extreme nature, red clothing gets noticed almost immediately and makes the wearer appear heavier. However, it’s also capable of activating your appetite, which is why most restaurants use red in their decorating schemes and sign-boards. Orange Orange encourages emotional balance and optimism. Warm-hearted and peaceful, it allows wearers to digest their emotions without holding on to any negative feelings. It offers a sense of community and tolerance, thus making it perfect for social gatherings and events. Blue Tranquil and peaceful, blue helps in acquiring inner peace, supports creativity, and has been proven to reduce pain levels. In fact, it causes the body to produce calming chemicals, which in turn increases productivity. Most fashion consultants recommend wearing blue to job interviews because it also symbolises loyalty. Furthermore, blue suppresses

appetite; this is because blue food is rare in nature, so it’s not a colour we generally associate with food. Green Being the easiest colour on the eye, green is refreshing, energising, and calming. It encourages growth, promotes wellbeing and prosperity, and is balancing and nurturing. Interestingly enough, it possesses healing qualities, which can help improve vision. On the other hand, wearing dark green gives out an impression of masculinity, conservativeness, and power. Yellow Yellow evokes confidence and joy and lifts your spirit immediately. Interestingly enough, it’s closely connected to our mental activity. It improves concentration, clarity of thought, attention to detail, and academic achievement. However, using too much yellow can be overpowering because it’s the most difficult colour for the eye to take in. Purple Similar to blue in terms of comfort and calmness, purple is believed to heighten your intuition. In addition, it’s known to be good for mental and nervous problems as it’s a calming colour that can comfort and relieve strain. But since it’s rare in nature, purple can appear to be artificial, making others unsure about the wearer’s personality.

Bedazzled Relationships

Are You A Dominatrix? No, we’re not referring to a sadomasochist dominatrix; we’re talking about dominating the relationship! So do you wear the pants in the relationship? Do you always have the upper hand no matter what? Take this quiz and find out… How do you solve arguments in the relationship? A. I deprive my husband of action to the point where he breaks down and apologises. B. I usually play the emotional blackmail card and it hardly ever fails me. C. I stay upset for a while, but I make it a point to sort things out the same day. It’s your birthday and your husband’s gift doesn’t live up to your expectations. How do you react? A. I’d throw a tantrum and make it very clear to him that I deserve better. B. I’d make him feel a tad bit guilty just to let him know that I expected more. C. It was probably the best gift in his opinion, so I’d just let it be. He bought you a tacky pink outfit that’s godawful hideous and he wants you to wear it for an upcoming social gathering. What are you most likely to do? A. I’d ask him to wear it instead! B. I’d ‘accidentally’ tear it. Oops! C. I’d improvise a little

18

OCTOBER 2013

bit and make it more presentable. He invited a couple of his friends over for dinner without asking you first. How would you react? A. If he thinks I’m going to cook for his friends he’s terribly mistaken. I’d just go to my parents’ place for the night. B. I’d make it very clear to his friends that they’re not welcome in my house. C. I’d be a little disappointed that he didn’t ask me first, but that’s no excuse for ruining the dinner. Your favourite TV show is on and he’s watching a boring football match. What are you going to do? A. Snatch the remote from him and tell him to take a hike. B. Promise him that if he lets me watch my show I’d repay the favour in the bedroom. C. Let him watch it, I can always watch the rerun next week. Has he ever told you that he’s scared of you? A. I know he is, but he doesn’t have the guts to

say something like that to my face. B. Well, he always tells me that he’s scared of upsetting me. C. No, we’re a team and there’s no such thing as fear in a relationship. If he upsets you and doesn’t realise it, how would you express your disappointment? A. I’d do the exact same thing to him, except that mine would be intentional and ten times more hurtful. B. I’d let out a long, cold sigh and give him the silent treatment for as long as it takes. C. I’d talk it out with him and explain to him how he upset me. He’s gone for a boy’s night-out and hasn’t called you once. What would you do? A. I don’t let him go for such night out; he’s not allowed to have fun without me. B. I’d send him a sarcastic text message and make him feel terribly guilty for ignoring me. C. It’s not a big deal; he deserves to have fun with his friends without having to worry about me.

Dominatrix Degree Find out which option you’ve ticked most and discover how dominating you are:

Mostly A’s: Psycho Dominator You might as well be called Hitler! You take pride in walking all over your partner and treating him like your slave. Don’t forget that there’s only so much that his ego can take. There will come a time when he’ll put his foot down and refuse to give in to your childish antics. So learn to treat him like an equal before your relationship reaches a dead-end.

Mostly B’s: Discreet Dominator You’ve mastered the art of domination and you know exactly how to get what you want. You’re so subtle in your ways that he has no clue that he’s being dominated in every possible way! However, don’t take this as a compliment because you’re indirectly changing your man into something he’s not. Give him space to be himself and you’ll soon realise that the both of you will be happier and more content with each other.

Mostly C’s: Anti Dominator You don’t have an ounce of domination in you and you always treat your partner with utmost respect and affection. You’re a rare breed that every man wants to be with, so pat yourself on the back for being such a mature and understanding partner. On the flip side, your husband could easily take you for granted and start dominating you; so learn to be more assertive to show him that you’re no punching bag.

Bedazzled Friendships

r e v O g n i Gett F F B x E Your Ending a friendship is often as painful as ending a relationship. Although you weren’t romantically involved with your friend, you shared a special connection with her that was unique to both of you…

Some people try to get over the pain by convincing themselves that their friend was nothing less than horrible. They forget about all the good times they shared with their friend

20

OCTOBER 2013

and focus on everything negative that happened. Shumeila from Jeddah chose to humiliate her friend in hopes of feeling good about breaking the friendship. She explained, “For some reason, the only thing I could talk about was how Abla* was such a terrible friend and how badly she treated me. I told everyone about everything that happened between us, but a part of me was still sad about letting her go. I just publicized our lives and got nothing out of it.” “Putting your friend down in front of others is immature and it won’t do you any good,” explains Dr. Rita Marl, Relate UK relationship therapist. She explains that the key is to handle the situation with an open mind and a positive attitude. And to get over the break-up, she advises: Get Closure Many of us tend to get carried away in the heat

of the moment and decide to break the friendship immediately, without even attempting to end things on a positive note. This results in a state of uneasiness because we don’t get proper closure. However, it’s never too late to talk it out and end things in a proper way, so speak to your friend openly and honestly, and explain to her why you ended the friendship. Despite not being friends anymore, you both will have a new found respect for each other. Get Busy Make it a point to keep yourself occupied as much as possible to avoid brooding over the friendship that was. So take up a new hobby, join a gym, or just start socialising more. It’s true that new friends seldom ever replace old buddies, but they’ll definitely help you fill the void you feel after letting a friend go. Thus, allow yourself to get close to new people because it’ll surely help

*Names have been changed.

We’ve all had some toxic friends who’ve done us bad in the friendship, leaving us with no choice but to end it. But no matter how bad a friend has been, you did spend some of your best times with her, and shutting her out completely from your life is not easy. Hanaa, teacher from Jeddah concurs, “After I got married, my best friend’s attitude towards me really changed. She would taunt me for every little thing I did and it got to a point where I just couldn’t take her negativity anymore. So, I decided to end the friendship. Shockingly enough, it was really difficult to forget about her because she was very close to me. It was really heartbreaking to let go of our friendship.”

you get comfortable with the breakup. Be Practical If you and your friend belong to the same group of friends, don’t expect your other buddies to stop being friends with her too. Understand that they have nothing to do with what happened between the two of you; so asking them to pick sides is unacceptable. Instead, explain to them that you’re not comfortable being around her and you’d prefer to hang out with them when she’s not around. Your pals too will have a tough time coping with the breakup, so make it easier for them by handling the situation maturely. Be In Control Many of us harbour extremely negative emotions towards our ex-friends without understanding that we’re only giving them more control over our emotions by doing so. Now that you’ve closed that chapter of your life, there’s no point going back to it and reliving all the pain with every person you meet. Thus, instead of wasting your time and energy whining about her, focus your energy on making the most of your present. Let Her Be Now that you’ve chosen to keep her out of your life, refrain from keeping a tab on what she’s up to. You don’t need to talk about her, you don’t need to ask your friends about her life, and you don’t need to scan her facebook for gossip because it’s not worth it. This is going to be difficult and emotionally challenging at the beginning, but it’ll eventually help you detach yourself from her.

Inspire Careers

Gender Communication At Work In a mixed working environment, the different communication styles of men and women can prove to be a roadblock. Understanding and overcoming this hurdle is essential for an organization’s success, says Sondra Thiederman…

As aggravating and frustrating as they can be, gender differences are also great fun. No, I don’t mean that way; I mean that gender differences often strike our funny bone. I suppose it has something to do with our past experiences and the vulnerability many of us feel in our personal relationships with the opposite sex. And, we are even more vulnerable when it comes to male-female relationships in the workplace. While it’s always risky to generalize gender differences, it’s possible to make certain flexible generalities that can be valuable when

22

OCTOBER 2013

communicating across gender lines.

Giving Orders

Both genders differ in the way they manage people and give orders. Studies have shown that women usually soften their demands and statements, whereas men tend to be more direct. Women use phrases like, ‘don’t you think’ following the presentation of an idea, ‘if you don’t mind’ following a demand, or ‘this may be a crazy idea, but’ preceding a suggestion. They are conditioned by culture to maintain harmony in relationships;

this is manifested in softened demands, hedged statements, and a generally more tentative communication style, but this doesn’t mean they lack confidence. Similarly, more direct communication, as seen with men and sometimes women too, doesn’t mean the person is arrogant, bossy, or feels superior. These are nothing more than learned ways of communicating.

Asking Questions

Another difference between men and women is that women ask more questions than men. We have all heard or experienced the

anecdote about the man who refuses to stop to ask for directions when lost. We get a good chuckle out of it, but differences in how and when questions are asked can create real confusion in the workplace. Asking questions means different things to both genders. Men ask questions for one purpose only: to gather information. For women, asking questions serves two purposes: one is to gather information, but as you’ve probably noticed, they also ask questions when they already know the answers. This is because they want to show interest in the other person and

build a relationship.

Overcoming Misunderstandings

There is nothing intrinsically wrong with different communication styles; men are perfectly right to be more direct and ask fewer questions, while women and some men are simply more comfortable with a softer communication style. The problem arises when these differences lead to misunderstandings and misinterpretations, which can ultimately disrupt teamwork and even derail someone’s chances for upward mobility. We need to stop assuming the

meaning of a particular style of speaking to build better gender-mixed teams. Just because one person may be more abrupt doesn’t mean he is cold, uncaring, or uninvolved. On the other hand, a more tentative approach is not necessarily a sign of weakness, fear, or lack of confidence. We communicate the way we do because it’s what we’re taught. What matters is that we give each other a chance, that we get to know what lies behind the communication style, and resist the urge to jump to premature conclusions about what the other person means.

Inspire Column

Democracy And Technology By Antonio Mugica

From Kenya to Thailand to the United States, the world’s oldest current democracy, voting problems have undermined public confidence in elections and caused lasting damage to institutions. From legitimate disputes about hanging chads to the wildfire spread of conspiracy theories, doubts about the integrity of voting breads destructive cynicism. The result: growing numbers of citizens lack confidence that election results truly represent the will of the people, not the power of hidden vested interests. This undermining of democratic legitimacy is a tragedy. And it’s a tragedy that must not be allowed to continue. Every election held today should be nearly flawless in its accuracy, completely transparent and 100% auditable. Why? Well, because the proven technology already exists to make fair and reliable elections a near certainty. In fact, it’s being used today in the most unexpected places. Take the 2008 election in the Philippines Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM). In

24

OCTOBER 2013

a country like most, with its fair share of democratic setbacks (including persistent accusations of fraud) the ARMM (considered the epicentre of it) held its first automated election. What happened? Speed, accuracy and transparency are what happened. The year before that, ARMM’s election took weeks to count, dogged by accusations of fraud. In 2008 it took 24 hours, with results accepted by all political parties.

two facts. First, as mentioned, the best auditable voting solutions have more checks and balances than the US Constitution. In other words, votes stored in multiple ways and in multiple places are very hard to manipulate without detection. Second, the best systems are truly Auditable Voting Systems, like the one used in Philippines, that include voter verified paper trails.

Here’s why. The auditable solution delivered a level of security none could question. Each machine stored each vote in seven different locations, making hacking or tampering with results a near impossibility. In contrast, traditional paper ballot elections, where the marked ballot is the only record, can be subject to human manipulation or damage. Just think what happened during the seminal 2000 US Presidential election when paper ballot ‘hanging chads’ forced an unelected body, the US Supreme Court, to choose the winner.

What does that mean? Simple, it means each and every voter gets to see a paper receipt and confirm his or her vote has been correctly recorded. Just as important, if concerns over election results arise, this parallel hardcopy trail can be quickly and rapidly audited.

Electronic voting, of course, has its fair share of critics. Some point to flaws in particular solutions that can be addressed and improved. Others, unfortunately, push blackbox theories of voting, i.e. once you put the vote into a computer you don’t know what happens to it.

In a world in which democracy remains the best hope for humanity’s future, we must not let unfounded fears stand in our way. Nothing builds the trust necessary to support democratic institutions faster than confidence in electoral results. And nothing delivers such confidence faster than fair, accurate, and transparent elections. In short, the best auditable voting solutions are actually an open box, letting the light shine clearly in on the beating heart of democracy.

Beyond violating common sense, we all trust computers with our very lives when we fly and with our livelihoods when we bank, the black-box theories ignore

Moreover, auditable voting is good for the bottom line and the environment. For instance, the fact that there is no need to print, customize, and transport millions of paper ballots for every election cycle saves money and trees.

Antonia Mugica is the CEO of Smartmatic, a leading provider of voting solutions across the globe.

Back nearly 20 years ago in 1989, it seemed as if nothing stood in the way of the worldwide spread of democracy. Today, we know better. From natural resources to culture to infrastructure, many factors can make it difficult for democracies to grow and thrive. Yet as we search for ways to help new and old democracies flourish, we often overlook the simplest solution, one staring us right in the face - the voting process.

Breast Cancer: Myths Versus Facts Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women, but how many of us actually know what this disease is all about? There are several misconceptions about breast cancer, and most of us tend to follow them blindly without doing our research. These eight myths may make all the sense in the world, but the actual truth is far from what they claim… Myth # 1: Being Diagnosed With Breast Cancer Means Losing A Breast Truth: Not all breast cancer patients lose their breast. Women who’re diagnosed with early stage cancer usually undergo lumpectomy and radiation therapy, which are effective breast-conserving therapies. Dr. Ayra Bakr, a cancer specialist in Dubai, explains, “Lumpectomy surgically removes the lump and the surrounding margin of normal breast tissue, while radiation therapy destroys all cancer cells that may stick around after surgery.” Chemotherapy (the use of anticancer drugs) is also popularly used to shrink the size of the tumour so that women can have lumpectomy instead of mastectomy (removal of the affected breast). Myth # 2: All Breast Lumps Are Cancerous Truth: Most breast lumps are not cancerous; they could be cysts or a benign condition called fibroadenoma. Dr. Bakr states that 80% of lumps are non-cancerous, and this percentage tends to “fluctuate with age.” In young women, more than 80% of breast

26

OCTOBER 2013

lumps are benign, and this percentage keeps decreasing as they become older. “But don’t let these facts lull you into complacency,” she warns. “You should report any breast abnormality to your physician, especially if it persists after two or more menstrual cycles.” Myth # 3: Only Women Get Breast Cancer Truth: Breast cancer isn’t just a women’s disease – men can get it too. “Many people don’t realise that men also have breast tissue that can develop a cancerous condition,” comments Dr. Bakr. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2009, about 1,910 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among men in the United States alone, and close to 440 men will die from the disease. Male breast cancer is most common between the ages of 60 and 70. Myth # 4: Only Women With Family History Get Breast Cancer Truth: Close to 90% of women who get breast cancer have no family history of the disease. “But if you do have a family history, your

chances of developing the disease are increased,” adds Dr. Bakr. “You should get screening mammograms earlier than other women, and you should ask your doctor to test if you have inherited BRCA1, BRCA2, and P53 genes. Inheriting these genes increases your risk of getting the cancer by 80-85%.” Myth # 5: Small-Breasted Women Don’t Get Breast Cancer Truth: Your breast size doesn’t increase or decrease your chances of developing the disease. Dr. Bakr explains, “The place where breast cancer starts is in the ducts that normally carry milk when women are pregnant and lactating, and every woman has the same number of ducts. Thus, women with small breasts have the same risk of getting breast cancer as women with larger breasts.” Myth # 6: All Nipple Discharges Indicate Breast Cancer Truth: Most nipple discharges do not indicate breast cancer. Dr. Bakr says that clear, milky, yellow, and green discharges are normal, while bloody

or watery discharges are abnormal. “However, only 10% of abnormal discharges are cancerous,” she adds. “Most bloody discharges are caused by a benign condition known as papilloma.” A papilloma is a non-cancerous, wartlike tumour with a stalk that has grown inside the breast duct. “But whether you have a normal or an abnormal discharge, you should report it to your doctor and demand a clinical examination.” Myth # 7: Breast Cancer Doesn’t Return After Being Removed Truth: Unfortunately, the risk of breast cancer’s return never goes away completely. According to Dr. Bakr, it’s more likely to return within the first five to ten years. “About 75% of women who report a recurrence get it within six years, and 25% develop it ten years later,” she says. Signs of recurrence include skin changes, such as reddening, swelling, or puckering, a lump or thickening in the breast tissue, scar tissue, or under your arm, and redness or scaling in the nipples. Myth # 8: Breast Cancer Always Takes The Form Of A Lump Truth: Most women who’re diagnosed with breast cancer do not have a noticeable lump. “There are several other signs women should look out for apart from a lump while performing self-examinations,” comments Dr. Bakr. “Some of the most important warning signs include a hard knot in the underarm, a thickening in the breast that doesn’t shrink or lessen after your next period, any change in the size, symmetry, or shape of the breast, any dimpling, puckering, or indention in the breast, and nipple tenderness or pain.”

Health Dilemmas

I just got a Pap smear to check for cancerous cells and everything was fine but a friend told me that it doesn’t necessarily mean that all is okay. Is that true? Shahinda, Jeddah Many women know that getting a Pap test regularly from their health care provider is a good way to check for signs of cervical cancer, the second most common cancer in women worldwide. What they might not know is that a “normal” Pap result does not necessarily mean they are cancer-free. A recent study involving more than 800 patients in a large health care plan found that about one in three women with invasive cervical cancer actually had normal Pap test results. Other research suggests that a single Pap test can miss early signs of cervical cancer up to half the time.

Ask Nisrine

While the Pap test is valuable, it doesn’t always detect cancer cells early, when treatment is easiest and most effective. By the time a routine Pap test detects abnormal cell changes in the cervix, cervical pre-cancer may already be occurring. As a result, the American Cancer Society and several medical groups now recommend that women between the ages of 30 and 65 be tested for certain types of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) - the main cause of cervical cancer - along with their Pap test. Of the more than 100 types of HPV, the most common sexually transmitted infection, most are harmless and are cleared naturally by a person’s immune system. In fact, 70 to 90% of sexually active individuals will have some type of HPV at some point in their life. But a few types, known as high-risk HPV, can develop into cancer, sometimes decades after a person has been infected.

Email Nisrine Kreidieh at: nisrine@dazzlemagazine.com or by post to the Dazzle KSA office.

The two highest-risk types, HPV 16 and HPV 18, are responsible for two-thirds of all cervical cancer cases. So, if a woman does test positive for HPV, it’s important for her and her doctor to know which HPV type she has, to more fully understand her risk.

Although advances in medicine like HPV testing are enabling doctors to provide better care with less frequent testing, many women are still in the habit of having an annual Pap test, and it may be difficult to get used to the change. But there are still many reasons for women to continue their yearly OB/GYN or family physician wellness visits. Even without the need for an annual Pap test, yearly well-woman visits are as important as ever for ovarian, uterine, breast, cardiovascular, and sexual health, as well as for colon cancer screening, osteoporosis prevention, and immunizations. So there are many good reasons for women to schedule their annual exam if they haven’t done so yet. More information about Pap and HPV co-testing and knowing a woman’s risk for cervical cancer is available at www.facebook.com/PreventCervicalCancer. 28

OCTOBER 2013

Answer Source: Brandpoint.com.

Coupling an HPV test with a Pap (co-testing) provides so much more valuable information about a woman’s risk for cervical cancer that several medical groups now say that women ages 30 to 65 only need to be co-tested every five years if neither test shows new abnormalities.

Ask Nisrine

Advances in lab medicine now allow health care providers to screen women specifically for high-risk HPV types. By ordering a high-risk HPV test along with a Pap test, a doctor can find out more about a woman’s risk for cervical cancer. One test in particular, called the Cobas HPV Test, gives health care providers individual results for HPV 16 and HPV 18, along with a grouped result for other high-risk HPV types, all in one test. A Pap and an HPV test can be done using the same sample, so all the information is available from just one office visit.

Beauty Tips For BridesTo-Be Expert skincare tips for glowing skin on your wedding day…

“On your wedding day, smooth, glowing skin is an absolute must. Good skincare is an internal and external process,” says Veronica Barton-Schwartz, a leading expert in skincare with more than 30 years of experience. Barton-Schwartz founded the Skin and Body Care Centre in California, USA, where she uses her extensive

knowledge to help clients look and feel their best. Whether she’s prepping a celebrity for the red carpet or a bride before her big day, she helps clients get smooth, healthy skin that truly glows. Here are her top skincare tips for brides-to-be: 1. Start Three Months Ahead Of The Big Day “Start prepping skin at least three months in advance. That will give you enough time to ensure that your skin is clear, smooth, and glowing for your special day,” says BartonSchwartz. She recommends finding a qualified aesthetician to help you choose the right treatments, but here are some general guidelines based on age: 20s: “When brides are in their 20s, they most likely are facing

acne and some discoloration from sun damage. Deepcleaning facials are a must to prep the skin at this age,” say Barton-Schwartz. 30s up: “In your 30s and 40s, the skin needs exfoliating regularly because it only exfoliates naturally every 35 days as opposed to every 14 days in your 20s. This is the time to start using retinoid to help improve the overall texture and tone of your skin,” she says. 40s and 50s: “In your 40s, your oestrogen levels are tapering so your skin will be drier. You’ll have to add collagen-building peptides morning and night to your skincare regimen. In your 50s, you’ll notice loss of elasticity and you will need stronger antioxidant treatments

and moisturizers. The older you get the more important it is to use a good serum under your moisturizer to help combat dry skin and loss of elasticity,” she explains. 2. Eat Foods And Beverages That Nourish Skin When it comes to healthy skin, it’s not only how you treat it externally, but internally as well. Barton-Schwartz says it’s wise to eliminate all sugar and white flour while increasing some skincare superstar foods. “Increase consumption of fresh fruits, vegetables, and lean protein,” suggests BartonSchwartz. “Add more essential oils and healthy fats like salmon and sardines to lubricate dermis layers. Drink more water. Water is absolutely vital for every process in the body and especially for your skin.”

3. Consider Supplements That Benefit The Skin Supplements can greatly benefit skin health from the inside, out. In addition to a good multi-vitamin, BartonSchwartz suggests considering alpha lipoic acid that assists metabolism, DMAE to improve muscle tone under skin, CoQ10 that increases metabolic efficiency and improves heart health, and omega-3s (found in fish oil) for heart, eyes, brain, skin, and overall body health. “The research of the benefits of fish oil is growing every day and I believe my good health and skin is partly due to the fact that I’ve been taking Nordic Naturals since I was in my 40s,” she says. “Now I’m 65 and I still have youthful skin.” For more information about Nordic Naturals omega-3 fish oil supplements, visit www.

Don’t Forget Last Minute To-Do’s For The Big Day When the big day comes, you’re likely to feel a mix of emotions: excitement, anxiety, etc. Some important day-of skincare tips can help you stay calm and look your best: “Eat some protein in the morning and take a walk to boost circulation and lymphatic drainage. Use your Veronica Peptides to help with any puffiness and dark circles under your eyes,” suggests Barton-Schwartz. “For your complexion, use a sheer, satinmatte foundation, medium coverage concealer for trouble spots, a light dusting of pressed powder, and a powder blush. Keep your makeup natural. Wear waterproof mascara, just in case.”

Beauty Dilemmas

I really want to start laser hair removal but I keep hearing very mixed reviews about it; what’s it like and does it work? Mirna, Jeddah

For people considering laser hair removal, there’s good news - now is the perfect time to start. Easily hidden under typical cool weather clothing like bulky sweaters and leggings, skin is shielded from the sun and thus in perfect condition for hair removal. However, many women are on the fence when it comes to investing in long-term hair removal due to several common misconceptions. Here are the top five laser hair removal myths busted by Dr. Paul Flashner, Chief Medical Director for American Laser Skincare:

Ask Sonja

1. Doesn’t treat all skin types Today there are more advanced technologies, such as the GentleMax Pro system, which delivers a wide range of treatments for effective hair removal on all skin types. Each treatment focuses on the individual, and the system prompts a series of questions about the person’s skin tone and overall makeup to help determine optimal settings for best results. It leverages two fast and powerful lasers: the Alexandrite and the Yag, for customized results on all skin types, light and dark. It’s important to note that if you are considering laser hair removal, you should first work closely with a skincare consultant to understand what treatment options work best for your individual skin.

Confused about makeup? Having a problem making the most of your features? What products to use? Ask Sonja to solve your problems!

2. Too painful No pain no gain? The leading edge technology in laser hair removal has enabled a more comfortable experience for those nervous about the “ouch” factor. It delivers an intense but gentle burst of energy onto targeted areas of the skin, delivering a controlled amount of therapeutic heat to the area. In addition, many of our clients report that the system’s cool pulse provides increased comfort during treatment.

“Anyone is who is thinking about getting laser hair removal wants to experience fast and effective results,” says Dr. Flashner. “The technologies available now target faster results, fewer treatments and less discomfort. Now is the perfect time for people to make sure they’ll be beach ready by summer.” For more information on laser hair removal, visit www.americanlaser.com and www.hairremovalforum.com 32

5. Need to let unsightly hair grow in between treatments Laser treatments target the root of the hair rather than the surface hair so you’re able to shave in between treatments and not worry about growing any unsightly hair.

Ask Sonja

4. Requires frequent clinic visits and treatments GentleMax Pro treatments are separated by a window of four to twelve weeks depending on the treatment area and the individual’s hair regrowth cycle, making long-term hair removal a much less tedious and time consuming task. In order to be ready for summer, now is the perfect time to start.

sonja@dazzle-magazine.com

3. Too expensive While laser hair removal does require a more substantial upfront investment, longterm results significantly trump traditional routines such as shaving or waxing. Studies have shown that women spend, on average, $10,000 on shaving over their lifetime, with waxing more than doubling the investment, especially when done by a professional. Laser hair removal can help save time and money over the course of a lifetime, and aesthetic service providers like American Laser Skincare offer a true personalized experience based on real, effective, and achievable results.

Talking Design Tech Seven websites to inspire the everyday designer in you… “Design is a process that starts with inspiration,” says Brad Kisner, a professional graphic designer and department chair of communication design for Harrington College of Design, a leading provider of higher education in the fields of graphic design, photography, and interior design. “That inspiration can come from anywhere - conversations with family or friends, past experiences, or things you might see walking

down the street. Today, it’s also easy to go online to find intriguing visuals that spark creativity.” With so many sites to choose from, a good starting point is to find those featuring a variety of media, visuals, and styles. In addition, the best websites should always properly credit or link to the original sources of the work featured. Here are seven websites to help inspire creative ideas:

Pinterest (www.pinterest.com) is one of the fastest-growing social-networking sites, with more than 10 million users. It’s an online bulletin board for posting (“pinning”) anything that catches your interest online. Skin Cancer

101

Prevention and detection tips for the most common type of cancer…

Preventing Skin Cancer While no type of cancer is 100% preventable, you can do a lot to minimize your risk of developing skin cancer, including: * Always wear sunscreen when you go outside, even during winter months. In summer, use a broadspectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. * For further sun protection, wear long sleeves and hats outdoors, especially if you’ll be in direct sunlight for an extended period of time. Many sportswear and swimwear manufacturers offer long-sleeved garments made from lightweight, breathable materials 54

that will keep you cool and dry while shielding you from the sun. * Avoid tanning, including tanning beds. Multiple studies have found that indoor tanning increases your risk of melanoma by 75%, and the risk grows with every use. Detecting Skin Cancer Detecting skin cancer when it is most curable is one of the most important ways to ensure a positive outcome for skin cancer treatment. Your detection efforts should include: * Conduct self-checks. Regularly examine your own skin, looking for changes in the appearance of moles. Use a mirror to look at your back, or have a loved one help. Don’t rely on smartphone technology for diagnosis. Some consumers are using smartphone applications for medical guidance on irregular moles. A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh found that these apps are not reliable tools, with three out of four applications incorrectly classifying 30% or more of melanomas as un-concerning. * Visit a dermatologist for an annual skin cancer check. Ask your dermatologist about MelaFind,

an FDA-approved diagnostic tool that helps dermatologists catch melanoma when it is most curable. Non-invasive and painless for patients, MelaFind uses multi-spectral light technology to analyse irregular moles in less than a minute, allowing dermatologists to better determine whether or not to biopsy a mole. In a clinical study, MelaFind had a 98.3% find rate for melanoma. To find a dermatologist who is using this breakthrough technology, visit www.melafind.com. Treating Skin Cancer If your dermatologist finds skin cancer, it’s important to know you have treatment options. Patients whose melanoma is diagnosed when it’s most curable have a survival rate of 97%, according to the American Cancer Society. Discuss your options with your doctor, and work in tandem with health care providers to ensure the best possible outcome for any treatment. While skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer, it is also the most preventable. Taking steps to reduce your risk, and catch skin problems before they become life threatening, can help your skin stay healthy and cancerfree throughout your lifetime.

One in five Americans will get skin cancer in their lifetime, according to research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Melanoma, the most lethal form of skin cancer, has steadily increased over the past three decades - to the rate of one American dying an hour from it, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. Detecting melanoma when it’s most treatable is key to survival. Fortunately, you can take steps to reduce your risk of getting skin cancer, and improve your chances of catching it in its most curable stages.
