A heartfelt letter to every Dazzle mother, When we drove you mad, you took it in stride and said, “One day you’ll have children of your own and you’ll understand it all then.” You were right, and I love you for it. When I became a mother I realised that every move you made, every word you spoke, and every action you took was out of the unconditional love a mother has for her children; the only truly unconditional love there is in the world. I might not have valued you enough while I was growing up, I might have hurt you a lot, I might have made you cry, and I am so sorry for all the pain I’ve caused you. Nothing in the world can compensate your love and devotion except God’s highest heaven, but I hope I can repay a tiny portion of that love and devotion. I love you. To my children, I love you more than anything in the world, and again, you’ll know and feel that love when you yourself are the givers of that love. The world can freeze over and that mother’s love is the only sure warmth that will always be there. No matter what happens, you are the love of my life and always will be. From, Every Dazzle mother

New Artist Spotlight By Bob Doerschuk

Eventually hired by Cal IV Publishing, the tall Texas redhead penned several hits. He won CMA’s coveted Triple Play Award for writing or cowriting three songs that hit No. 1 in 2012: Angel Eyes, Even If It Breaks Your Heart, and Barefoot Blue Jean Night, which also was honoured as ASCAP’s Country Song of the Year. Impressive, but not unique, yet.

The epiphany comes with his self-titled inaugural album, released Feb. 4 on EMI Records Nashville. Produced by Marshall Altman and Daniel Hill/Billy Lynn, its 11 tracks reflect the strength of this young artist’s work. Compositionally, he cultivates simplicity. Many of his verses cycle just three or even two chords. ‘Country Side of Heaven’ (Paslay, Dylan Altman, and Shane McAnally) hangs entirely on the I and V. But on that track, Paslay’s organic dynamics, his inspiring vocals and especially his ability to conjure compelling images

enrich both his sound and his story.

Song You Wish You’d Written “What a Wonderful World.”

Favourite Mode Of Transportation “Teleportation.”

Though all his songs are beautifully crafted, one may qualify as a masterpiece. Caressed by a sensitive arrangement, Paslay’s aching vocal and evocative lyrics on ‘She Don’t Love You’ (Paslay and Jennifer Wayne) build on the title (‘… she’s just lonely’) to cast a spell that doesn’t resolve until literally the last word. This is supreme writing and execution, by any measure. For more on Eric Paslay, visit www.CMACloseUp.com.

New Artist Spotlight: Charlie Farley

Charlie Farley gets both forms of music. Stylistically, this native of De Queen, Ark., vocalizes with complete authenticity, from the rhythm of his rhymes to the hints of melody that emphasize key words and cadences. Influenced as much by Tupac as Hank Williams, he began writing poetry at 12. In May 2012, Farley cut his debut album in Atlanta, helmed by Phivestarr Productions. It took him all of two days to finish 13 tracks, which were released in January by Average Joes Entertainment/BackRoad Records as Hog Heaven. Though his delivery doesn’t reference Country tradition,

the feel isn’t that different. Check out the first single, ‘Backwoods Boys’ (written by Farley, Daniel Lee, Jared Sciullo, and Justin Spillner): A lazy fiddle underscores its celebration of Southern idylls. This focus predominates throughout Hog Heaven. In place of gangsta references, Farley pays homage to bedrock virtues, from skinny-dipping (‘Average Joes’ by Farley, Noah Gordon, Sciullo, and Spillner) to rugged individualism: His people “still believe in America,” he insists on the title cut (Farley, Sciullo, and Spillner). “Hard times will never break us.”

© Jared Sciullo/Country Music Association

It’s official: Rap has crossed over to Country. What was a novelty just a few years ago is now a subgenre, whose ties to hip-hop are as fascinating as they are controversial.

You might be on the fence about whether this hybrid sound will endure, but there’s no doubt that Farley’s commitment to Country values will. For more on Charlie Farley, visit www.CMACloseUp.com.

In His Own Words Dream Duet Partner “Would have to be Garth or Collin Raye. Collin was actually born in the same town that I grew up in.” Song You Wished You’d Written “Dirt Road Anthem. I knew that type of song would be a hit. Everyone I grew up with in Southwest Arkansas listened to rap, and they listened to Country. So it was only a matter of time before the two elements combined. I wish I would have written it but Colt (Ford) and Brantley (Gilbert) did an amazing job. Then Jason (Aldean) did as well. Songs You Sing In The Shower “Most of the time I’m singing new tunes. New ideas normally

start coming to me while I’m freshening up.” Phrase You Say Over And Over “Ain’t it though? My brother got me saying that years ago and I guess I will say it forever.” Pet Peeve “People loudly crunching ice or chips or talking with a mouth full of food drives me absolutely crazy!” Moment You Would Like To Relive “I would have to relive two. That would be the days my two kids were born. I was young and dumb back then, and if I could erase the alcohol and replace it with more memories of them I would

be happy.” Something We’d Never Guess About You “I’m really down-to-earth and laid-back. I think most people listen to my music and expect me to be this cocky or arrogant guy. I’m the complete opposite of that. I remember my mom telling me when I was young, ‘Son, you ain’t better than nobody else but ain’t nobody else better than you.’ I took that to heart then and still do now. So I treat everyone the way I would want to be treated whether they are 80 and broke or 13 and rich.”

Mind & Soul

A Beautiful Bond A woman’s body has a miraculous mechanism for embracing motherhood. It prepares her to fall in love with her baby before she even becomes pregnant and continues to do so during and after her pregnancy, reports Hafsa Mahfooz…

When a woman carries her unborn baby for nine months, the two gradually get to know each other and their souls connect. The unborn baby begins to bond with his mother by learning the rhythm of her walk and recognising her voice, while the mother feels a sense of love and joy every time her baby moves inside her. All these little things that they experience about each other are responsible for forming a magical motherbaby bond. Thomas Verny, psychiatrist and author of ‘The Secret Life of the Unborn Child and Secret Lessons’ says, “By the third trimester of pregnancy, the unborn child is a sensing, feeling, aware, and remembering human being. If we understand that, it makes sense to start communicating with this little being.” According to him, babies not only recognise their mothers’ voices at birth, but they also respond to music and their

16

MARCH 2014

fathers’ voices. Ghada from Jeddah recalled her first pregnancy and all the changes she noticed in herself. “When I discovered I was pregnant, I was really scared because I didn’t know what to expect. I didn’t know if I was capable of taking care of a child and giving it all the love my mother gave me. But as the pregnancy progressed, I felt a strong sense of attachment and love towards my unborn child. My fears started going away and I couldn’t wait to bring in a new life and watch it grow.” According to Michael Trout, Director of the Infant-Parent Institute in Illinois and Founding President of the International Association for Infant Mental Health, “A mother’s body tries to prepare her to increase her capacity to put up with pain and disappointment, to heighten her interest in what is happening inside of her, and to

evoke fierce protectiveness. All these gradual changes arouse maternal instincts in her.” Michel Odent, Obstetrician and Author, explains, “Mothers and babies are in a special hormone balance during pregnancy and birth. The hormone oxytocin, which causes the uterus to contract in labour, is at a peak during birth. This hormone of love also has behavioural effects.” At birth, the high oxytocin levels the mother experiences are complemented by high levels of another hormone called prolactin. This hormone is not only responsible for stimulating her breasts to make milk, but it also encourages feelings of relaxation and nurturing behaviour towards her baby. “Labour pains also contribute to this process. In response to contraction pains, a woman’s body produces natural painkillers called endorphins.

These hormones also promote a feeling of well-being. Even after the contractions stop, the endorphins still flow through the body, making the mother experience a state of bliss when the baby is placed in her arms.” Ghada adds, “When I saw Omar for the first time, I couldn’t control my happiness. There was something so special and memorable about that moment; I felt the connection right away and it was beautiful. That little, innocent being needed me and all my protective instincts came to life.” Odent explains that the first time a mother and her baby see each other is special for both of them. He says, “If the mother and baby are left undisturbed for the first hour or so, they will just gaze into each other’s eyes.

an important positive contributor. “If your partner holds you and encourages you to push harder, it will lead to increased oxytocin production.” This loving touch phenomenon also applies to babies. Having lots of skin-to-skin contact will encourage both the mother and her child to produce the chemicals that will reinforce feelings of love and attachment. Holding the baby against the chest enables him to hear the heartbeat, voice, and other

Each of them finally gets to see and connect with the person they’ve been waiting for. This is when they start falling in love with each other.” Natural Loving Sometimes, the natural processes of birth are interrupted for safety reasons; women in labour are injected with oxytocin or labour pain is reduced with an epidural change. So do these artificial injections change the falling-in-love experience? According to Odent, oxytocin given by injection only causes uterine contractions, without the falling-in-love benefits, while epidurals reduce the levels of endorphins produced by labouring women. But he stresses, “This does not mean that these women will not be

sounds that he heard during the nine months. Even when the mother walks around with the infant, her familiar rhythm comforts him and he feels secure. Verny adds, “In the early months, a baby is constantly tracking his mother’s face to seek comfort. If this is reinforced with constant caressing, it evokes positive responses from the child and he feels loved.” Bonding makes a mother want to shower her little one with love, affection, and protection. It

able to love their babies. Even though they don’t feel a natural chemical rush, they will definitely feel a strong connection because they’ve shared a beautiful process for nine whole months.” Odent further explains that it’s very important to help a labouring woman feel relaxed and comforted. “If a woman feels anxious and restless during labour, it can activate negative emotions and inhibit the release of beneficial hormones. This will not only make the labour more painful, but it will also make it harder for her to fall in love with her newborn.” Fortunately for mothers and babies, there are several natural ways of stimulating hormone production. Among these, a loving touch from the husband is

gets her up in the middle of the night to feed her hungry baby and makes her attentive to his wide range of assorted cries. But bonding is an ongoing process; even though it can take place within minutes of giving birth, it continues to grow and blossom even more. You may not even know it’s happening until you observe your baby’s first smile and suddenly realise you’re filled with happiness and love. This beautiful connection that you share with your baby is truly the best gift nature has to offer.

Charm

Personality

The Predator Parent As scary as it sounds, some mothers intentionally hurt their own children to seek attention. Discover more about this mental disorder called Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy, says Nisrine Kreidieh… Not so long ago, a shocking and horrific video showing nannies maltreating their children caused a worldwide frenzy. The crime was unforgivable, horrendous, and we felt no mercy or compassion towards the accused. But what if I told you that the abusive caregiver is sometimes the child’s own mother? And I’m not referring to child abuse conditioned by a slap on the hand or yelling in the face, I’m talking about serious damaging matters that cause toddlers and young children to get hospitalized. In fact, the mother who abuses her own child has a mental illness called Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy (MSBP). To understand this well, let me enlighten you with its precedent, Munchausen Syndrome. Munchausen Syndrome is named after a German military man, Baron von Munchausen, who travelled around relating fantastic tales about his imaginary exploits. In 1951, Sir Richard Asher, MD, FRCP, applied the term ‘Munchausen’ to people travelling from hospital to hospital, fabricating various illnesses. Persons with this disorder intentionally cause signs and symptoms of an illness by inflicting medical harm to their body, often to the point of having to be hospitalized. They enjoy undergoing medical interventions to get the sympathy and attention given to ill people. They also move

18

MARCH 2014

from doctor to doctor, hospital to hospital, or town to town to find a new audience once they’ve exhausted the treatment options available in a given medical setting. According to Marc D. Feldman, MD, “In MSBP, a mother either claims that her child is sick or she goes even further to actually make him sick. Her acting skills are just as good as any veteran actor.” This ‘devoted’ parent continually presents the child for medical treatment, ignoring the fact that she is actually the origin of the problem. As a result, the abused child may undergo extraordinary numbers of lab tests, medication trials, and even surgical procedures that are uncalled for. The MSBP predator might induce apnea (a cessation of breathing) by suffocating her child to the point of unconsciousness, then frantically take him to the hospital for treatment. Behind closed doors she may scrub the child’s skin with oven cleaner to cause a blistering rash that lasts for months. It can even go as far as injecting him with insulin or not feeding him for days so that she can complain of low blood sugar levels or unconsciousness. It should not be surprising that this form of child abuse has a mortality rate of nine percent. The Web Of Deceit

The Kathleen Bush and Vyonne Eldridge cases in the States caused nationwide panic a few years ago. Both these mothers had children with serious medical problems; Jennifer Bush suffered from intestinal problems and Eldridge’s two daughters had so many complications that they were left weak and undernourished. As a result of their quest for sympathy and attention, the children underwent several operations, surgeries, and painful lab tests. And because of their so-called devotion, both mothers received praise of the highest order from the American government. But, recently they were diagnosed with a personality disorder that drove them to manufacture illnesses in their children. But who would do such a thing? Inflicting such pain and suffering on a child contradicts everything we’ve come to love about motherhood. Professionals explain that the MSBP parent is on a misguided mission to feel special. According to Marc D. Feldman, “It is an attentionseeking behaviour due to psychological problems in the adult. However, the syndrome can be life-threatening for the child involved because this unusual behaviour can escalate to the point of severe physical harm or even death.” Because this is a form of child abuse, the syndrome must be reported to the authorities. Psychiatric counselling is recommended for

Predator Pointers The following are some of the signs that signal towards an MSBP predator: The child’s symptoms do not fit a classical picture of illness or do not fit well together. The child’s symptoms improve at the hospital but reappear at home. The parent is over attentive or ‘too helpful’. The parent is often involved in a health-care field such as nursing. Blood in lab specimens doesn’t match the patient’s blood type. The presence of drugs or chemicals in serum, stool, or urine samples cannot be accounted for.

the parent involved, but since the disorder is rare, very little is known about effective treatment. Sadly, every parent who is seriously advocating for their child nowadays is in imminent danger; families across the world are being destroyed by doctors or medical professionals who make false allegations to evade a malpractice lawsuit. But justice is now being served to innocent mothers with the help of an organization called M.A.M.A (Mothers Against

Munchausen Allegations). In 2003, it shed light on the famous Sally Clark case, as a result of which the guilty paediatrician was discredited in the UK. Sally was a lawyer who was wrongfully convicted and sentenced to jail for the death of her two boys. She was discharged from prison after the conviction was squashed. The fact that some medical professionals are abusing MSBP to save their name is just sickening. It is a serious

mental disorder that can be life-threatening for the children involved, but directly accusing the parents is not the answer. These people have a psychological disorder and medical professionals should offer them help before anything else. In conclusion, Marc D. Feldman added, “If you suspect a parent may be abusive towards her children, consult a psychiatrist to seek confirmation. Paediatricians and nurses cannot make such a diagnosis because this is not their forte.”

Bedazzled

Sweet Revenge

Relationships

Who says break-ups can’t be fun? All you need is some clever thinking and determination to give your ex the payback of a lifetime…

Just when you thought your relationship was all hunky dory, your man decided to go and cheat on you. Now that you’ve cut him out, you’ve turned to chocolates and tissues for comfort, but the heartache is killing you and you can’t stop thinking about him. You’ve called him a million times to ask him why he cheated on you and his answer is never good enough, but you’re only hurting yourself by doing this. You can’t change what has already happened, but what you can do is show him who he’s dealing with. So don’t just sit there and wallow ladies, check out our top seven revenge tactics and get ready to have some fun: 1. Oops I Did It Again If you run into your ex at a party, be nice and join his friends for some small talk. While you’re chatting away, be sure to bring up a really embarrassing anecdote involving you-know-who. You could remind him of the time when he dressed up as a playboy bunny for you, or how he likes singing along to backstreet boys and spice girls when he’s alone at home. After his face turns red and his friends burst out laughing, act extremely innocent (angelic even) and say, “Oh, was I not supposed to say that? I’m sorry!” 2. Tech Savvy Evil You can’t help but love the big

20

MARCH 2014

bad world of internet because the amount of damage you can cause is only a click away! To make him super jealous, you can befriend a couple of his hot guy friends on facebook and send them flirty wall posts, or you can crush his ego completely by dedicating your blog to inside relationship secrets. Feel free to discuss the horror of his smelly breath, or how he has to attend to nature’s call every half hour (the failure of which has some serious and extremely smelly repercussions!). And remember that sharing is caring, so pass the link to your friends and witness the fall of mister popular’s social life. 3. The Gym Affair He must be terribly mistaken if he thinks he’s safe from your wrath at the gym. In fact, this is the perfect opportunity for you to bring out the big guns and create some serious trouble for him. The classic gym payback is the pick-and-run trick: all you have to do is pay some guy to take all his belongings (including clothes, of course!) as soon as he hits the shower. When he discovers that everything is gone, his only option will be to drive home in a towel. You don’t want to miss this sight, so hang around somewhere close to the gym and click a pic of him! 4. Your Mom = My Friend

Yes, this is the “mother” of all paybacks. Who else can give you an account of his most embarrassing childhood moments than mommy dearest herself? So befriend his mother and get into her good books so she feels comfortable sharing her son’s deep dark secrets with you. As the friendship blossoms, try getting your hands on some really ugly blast-from-the-past pictures of him and mail them to his new girlfriend. But, remember to be creative in your presentation; make a collage of all the pictures and add some wisecracks that’ll make him want to run to his mommy and hide behind her for the rest of his life. 5. Ebay It All Don’t be nice and return everything he’s left at your place, make some money instead. Gather anything he

like jacket, and off on ebay. know that

might’ve forgotten there a designer watch, CDs auction them Let him his valuable

possessions are up for grabs on ebay in case he wants to buy them back; the look on his face will be absolutely priceless. Why not take it a step further and auction off all the gifts you’ve received from him during the course of the relationship? Trust us when we say it’s a bad and pathetic idea to keep anything your ex has given you. So think smart and use the added income for some luxurious and welldeserved pampering. 6. To Parents, With Love Now that you’ve got all the material possessions out of the way, what do you do with all the love letters and cards he’s given you? It’s an absolute no-brainer actually, pack all the useless literature (naughty or not) and send it across to his parents’ place. Add a ‘letter of regret’ saying, “I’m sorry things didn’t work out between us, but I want you to know that I completely support your decision and I hope I

got the address right.” It’s not as evil as it sounds; you’re actually doing the parents a favour by giving them a glimpse into their son’s love life! 7. Full Frontal Attack If there’s one thing men love to

obsess over, it’s their hair. So why not use this weakness to your advantage and have a good laugh? If you ever go to your ex’s house, excuse yourself and go to the bathroom for some devious sabotaging. Gather all the hair products you can find and exchange each content with another; you can fill the shampoo bottle with hair gel, hair wax with conditioner, and conditioner with hair gel! Let your creative juices flow and experiment as much as you like because you know it’s worth the effort. Sometimes payback is what we need to get over someone. We’re not saying it’s an absolute must, but it helps, especially if you weren’t expecting to breakup. What you’ll notice is that all the tactics mentioned are harmless and humorous, which proves that you don’t have to get mean and hurtful to express your anger and disappointment. So start moving on today and give the ex a Dazzle style payback!

Bedazzled Friendships

y t l e u r C e l b Tolera You’re probably wondering how any sort of cruelty can be tolerable. But, when friends hurt or embarrass us without even realising it, one can’t help but label their remarks as tolerable cruelty…

Has a friend ever made a mortifying remark about you that made you squirm? Did it make you want to dig a hole and just stay there for the rest of your life? Well, you’re not the only one who’s felt that way. All of us have been victims of such heinous crimes at some point. Our buddies can be quite evil at times as they put us on the spot by saying things that are downright humiliating. And the worst part is that they say such things without actually meaning to hurt us, so we can’t even get mad at them! But, you don’t have to be a bundle of nerves every time you’re faced with such social-suicide moments. All you need is a smart comeback that will shut them up: Cruel Remark: Why have you

MARCH 2014

gained weight? Now if it’s coming from a girlfriend, the first thing you have to do is decide whether or not it’s out of spite. Once you know what her real motive is, just play nice and seek some friendly advice. On the other hand, if your guy friend is the culprit, it’s a completely different story. Everyone knows that a woman’s bodyweight yo-yo’s throughout the year. Dr. Mayyada Naser, Member of the Egyptian Association for Women’s Health, explains, “A woman’s physical health is directly related to her emotional health, so even if she’s having a bad day, she’ll instantly retain water and bloat. Then of course there’s menstruation bloating which adds to her weight gain.” So are you supposed to

spill your guts and tell him that you’ve put on the extra pounds because you’re depressed or on your period? Un-cruel Retort: I’m in between diets. Cruel Remark: Why are you breaking out? Ouch! No one likes to hear or answer this one, especially if it’s coming from a guy! You try to keep your cool and explain to him that you hate those pesky zits and you’re doing everything you can to get rid of them but what you can’t do is tell him straight up that he’s being insensitive. “Girls think it’s common sense not to point out zits, but you’d be surprised at how many guys think it’s just general conversation,” remarks

Ahmed, 33. “Some guys don’t really know how to show that they’re close to you and they think that talking about girly matters like breakouts makes them a part of the girl gang.” So if he wants to be one of the girls, do you embarrass him by telling him that you’re breaking out because it’s that time of the month? Un-cruel Retort: It’s just stress. Cruel Remark: You need to wax! Just when you thought it couldn’t get more embarrassing, it does. In fact, many of us indulge in painful hours of hair removal just to avoid such a comment, especially from a guy. But when you’re single and busy with work, you like to relish the winter months in your true elements without having to worry about getting ready for the beach. You deserve it! Won’t you just love to tell your guy friend to try waxing just once to figure out

why you skipped a few weeks of it? But then again, he’s a friend and he’s just trying to be “one of the girls”. Un-cruel Retort: I was actually going to do it today. Cruel Remark: Did you forget to brush your teeth? Now who forgets to brush their teeth? We’re all humans and our breath does smell from time to time, so why does your friend have to ask you something like this? And to add to the horror, she has to say it in front of all your other friends, bringing it to everyone’s attention. Aisha, 21, recalls, “When my friend publicly announced my bad breath, I felt like an ant and my face literally turned red. It was so humiliating and I didn’t know how to react.” Ideally, you’d like to tell her off by making a comeback like, “Did you forget too?” but that’s such a fouryear-old thing to say.

Un-cruel Retort: Got gum? Cruel Remark: Remember the time when… Reminiscing the good old days is one thing, but reliving the horror of all the embarrassing things you did in the past is another! Picture this: you’re with your new found love and your friend decides to spill all the mortifying details from your past, like a detailed account of your retro hairstyles over the years or your psychotic breakdown over your ex. Everyone has a good laugh; the somewhat amused significant other, the bigmouth friend, and the fake you. But, deep down inside you’re planning to kill her for being such a rat. You even try to convince your beau that she made everything up and you used to be a normal kid, but the damage is already done. Un-cruel Retort: Yeah I was a freak; but I was a proud one!

Marketing Your Diversity Embrace your ethnic diversity at the workplace instead of hiding it in the closet. Dazzle tells you how to make your diversity work for you…

Diversity is nothing new in today’s global multicultural world. It includes thought, race, gender, ethics, language, religion, national origin, physical ability, age and lifestyle. So, if you’re a job seeker with a diverse background, communicate those traits to the company you are applying to. “There are subtle ways to signal your ethnicity to a potential employer. Focusing on your skills and capabilities should be number one, but your diversity is an added feature for the company,” says Cathy Taylor, JWT Employment Communications Business Director. Taylor had no apprehensions in reflecting her ethnic diversity

in her resume. However, her references to her AfricanAmerican background were subtle. She did not want her diversity to overshadow an accomplished career of 25 years of professional achievements. After all, they were hiring her to perform a job. “Currently, a debate surrounds whether or not you should reflect your ethnicity in your résumé,” explains Taylor. Some feel being upfront about your diversity could mean you run the risk of having your résumé tossed out of the pile without getting the attention it deserves. Taylor’s response? “That’s good for me. I wouldn’t want to work at an organization like that anyway.”

But, if a company truly is committed to diversity as a core value, it will be looking for diversification in its hiring practices and a résumé showing a distinct background could be pulled to the top of the stack. Deborah Elam, General Electric Chief Diversity Officer, agrees, “The more you can show about yourself, from a multicultural standpoint, the better.” Communicate Your Diversity There are various strategies that communicate and utilise your background: Membership You can give employers a clue to your diversity through listing associations, organizational memberships, and other

affiliations you belong to such as the Association for Women in Computing. After listing her accomplishments and professional experience, Taylor’s résumé showed that she was the past president of the National Association of Black Journalists.

But, Elam warns, “Narrow down your list of companies to only four or five that you’ve already researched or you’ll be overwhelmed.” The bottom line is, marketing yourself and portraying your diversity in the right way works for you. In your applications and interviews, highlight your diverse background and how your unique perspective and skills contributed to the success of previous employers. USDUAH EURUAH Update By John J. Hardy, Head of FX Strategy at Saxo Bank

John J. Hardy, Head of FX Strategy at Saxo Bank, columnist, and commentator, presents his views on the USDUAH EURUAH… The Ukrainian Hryvnia, or UAH, is under severe strain in the wake of the turmoil in Ukraine, having fallen by over 10% over the last few days against the US Dollar and the Euro, marking the final confrontation with and exit of Ukraine’s now former president of Yanukovych. Even before the recent confrontation with Ukraine’s leadership broke out, the Hryvnia UAH was on a slow downhill slide that was actually quite mild relative to the alarming fundamental backdrop for Ukraine: a yawning current account deficit that ended 2013 at worse than 8% of GDP and fast dwindling central bank reserves that were only about 10% of GDP at $18 billion at the end of January, having fallen by some 2.5 billion in that month alone and are likely down even more sharply in February. Now the central bank has been forced to cut its defence of the UAH to preserve its last reserves and the world watches and wonders whether the country will default on its debt. After all, Ukraine will need to repay as much as $13 billion this year. The uncertainty is heightened as the exiting Yanukovych was seen as a lackey of the Russian plan to keep Ukraine within its sphere of influence. It was, after all, his last minute abandoning of an EU association agreement and joining of the new Russian customs union in November of last year that precipitated the

26

MARCH 2014

entire popular confrontation with his government. Russia had offered $15 billion in financial aid in December, but the hasty exit of Yanukovych is seen as casting a shadow over any Russian intent to further aid the country as it sees its influence now gravely compromised. Meanwhile, the US, the EU, and others have offered aid, but how effectively can they extend this aid, and how effectively can the new interim Ukrainian leadership accept it without provoking a hostile response from Russia? While the nation appears to be moving rapidly to establish an interim government with a call for elections in late May, the recent turmoil has brought further economic damage to the country and there is still a strong risk of some kind of confrontation with Russia if it seeks direct aid in this situation from the West rather than the East. While Ukraine might be locked out of debt markets for some time if it does default, I would hope that they go ahead and default on some or all of their outstanding debt as this will be the quickest way for the country to restructure and move forward - it might hurt in the near term, but if the nation rapidly stabilizes politically, it could invite tremendous investment flows down the road as Ukrainian assets will look very cheap in the wake of a devaluation, exports would get a boost from the cheaper domestic cost basis, and the

current account deficit would quickly move into surplus. Unfortunately, the prospects for immediate political stabilization don’t look particularly bright. Although Yanukovych managed to inspire near universal dislike among the more nationalistic western Ukrainians and the Russia-leaning Ukrainians in the south and east of the country alike due to his abuse of his office and widespread corruption, there is still a strong dividing line that runs more or less straight through the middle of this country. It is hard to imagine a scenario from here in which Ukraine merely moves to a new Western-leaning government that renews its efforts to closer economic and even political integration with Western Europe without a significant protest from Russia. So, the UAH is likely to suffer further damage as the market watches and waits for what will take shape in the months ahead. Are we headed for a new velvet divorce that sees the peaceful creation of two new countries, or something far worse - a hostile confrontation that sucks in the biggest power players on either side as their interests play out on their clients in a Ukrainian political and even military battlefield? Let’s hope for the former. In any case, it is difficult to imagine that Ukraine as currently drawn on the map is a viable country in the long run.

Eating For Two: You’re Not! Just when weight should matter the most (when you’re pregnant), women tend to loose control, says Nisrine Kreidieh… It seems like weight-obsession is escalating enormously. Are we too fat, or too skinny? Weight dilemmas are taken as seriously as national security matters, like getting into size zero pants can actually guarantee world peace! Sadly, women tend to take their weight issues very lightly when it matters the most - during their pregnancies. “Other than the few women who have nightmares about chubby thighs and expanding waistlines, the majority tend to gorge for two, making it harder to loose those extra pounds after delivery,” explains Marie Cedergren, M.D, a maternal obesity expert in Sweden. This behaviour has serious implications of obesity during pregnancy, which include gestational diabetes, preeclampsia (high blood pressure), still birth (foetal death), preterm delivery, birth defects, and the child’s own risk of obesity in the future. Keep It Reasonable If your pre-pregnancy weight was within the healthy range, you should gain between 25 to 35 pounds (10-15 kilos), gaining two to five pounds in the first trimester and about one pound a week for the rest of your pregnancy. You should increase your daily intake by 300 calories only. However, if you are underweight, you should gain 28 to 40 pounds

28

MARCH 2014

(12-18 kilos), while if you’re overweight, you should gain 15 to 25 pounds (7-11 kilos). Those extra pounds are divided accordingly: 7.5 pounds (3.5 kg): Average baby’s weight 7 pounds (3 kg): Extra stored protein, fat, and other nutrients 4 pounds (2 kg): Extra blood 4 pounds (2 kg): Other extra body fluids 2 pounds (1 kg): Breast enlargement 2 pounds (1 kg): Enlargement of the uterus 2 pounds (1 kg): Amniotic fluid surrounding the baby 1.5 pounds (0.7) kg: The placenta Maternity Diet Guidelines When you’re pregnant, you have to eat healthier and you can’t go on a strict diet. According to Dr. Philip Owen, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, your diet must consist of 10% proteins, 35% fats, and 55% carbohydrates. Dr. Owen suggests: Plenty of fruit and vegetables (fresh, frozen, or a glass of juice). Aim for five portions daily. Plenty of starchy food such as bread, pasta, rice, and potatoes. Choose from wholegrain selections. Plenty of proteins such as eggs, lean meat, and chicken.

Aim at having two portions of fish a week such as tuna and sardines. Plenty of fibre to prevent constipation. Plenty of dairy products such as milk, cheese, and yogurt that are rich in calcium. Vitamins And Minerals: Folic Acid: Known as folate in its natural form, it is one of the B-group of vitamins found in broccoli, Brussels sprouts, asparagus, peas, chickpeas, brown rice, oranges, and bananas. It is crucial to take a 0.4 mg folic acid supplement during pregnancy daily, to prevent neural defects in unborn children. Iron: Pregnant women tend to be deficient in iron. It’s found in red meat, pulses (lentils and beans), vegetables, and fortified cereals. Try to have food containing vitamin C with your iron-rich meal to help your body absorb the iron. Vitamin D: Since we get most of our vitamin D form sunlight it is recommended for pregnant woman to take 0.1mg of Vitamin D supplement daily. It’s essential for regulating calcium levels in your body, which is responsible for promoting the baby’s growth and development. What To Avoid Soft blue cheese, Camembert, and Brie cheese: These cheeses are made with mould and they contain listeria, a type

A Heartburn Myth Many women drink milk before they sleep to ease heartburn. But often, it ends up causing heartburn during sleep. The real problem is that heartburn stems from eating too much at dinnertime, because of excess stomach acid production. Drinking milk could be a quick fix. However, it has a rebound action, which eventually encourages more stomach acid secretion, which causes the reflux. To solve the problem, eat a small meal at dinner, and have a small snack such as crackers before you sleep.

of bacteria that could harm your unborn baby. Pate: Also contains listeria, a bacteria that will adhere to your intestines releasing toxins that can reach and damage other parts of your body. Raw or partially cooked eggs: to avoid risk of salmonella. Uncooked meat and poultry. Also wash your hands after handling raw meat to prevent food poisoning. Supplements containing vitamin A since it’s harmful for the baby. Liver and liver products: Although they are rich in iron, they are also rich in vitamin A. Shark, swordfish, and marlin

fish: These types of fish are high in mercury, which harms your baby’s developing nervous system. Shellfish and prawns unless they’re cooked. Sushi: Unless the fish was frozen first. Freezing can kill the parasites and worms present in raw fish. Avoid alcohol. Excessive caffeine: Limit your intake to 200mg a day. Low birth weight and miscarriages are associated with high caffeine intake. Postpartum Weight Loss If all women would agree on one universal concern, it would be postpartum weight loss. Nevertheless, not one expert recommends dieting

after giving birth. In fact, you should increase your daily calorie intake by 500; a lactating mother produces around 850 ml of milk to nurse her newborn, not to mention the energy she spends to perform her new parental duties. She also needs the energy to heal from child bearing and birth. Dr. Alvin Eden suggests loosing the weight by increasing activity to increase metabolic rate instead of drastically reducing caloric intake. He suggests: 1. Continue your pregnancy regime; you would still need food high in calcium, fibre, and iron. 2. The best cure is prevention. So avoid dramatic weight gain during the pregnancy. 3. Increase your activity gradually, and start exercising after two months of delivery. Don’t forget you gained all this weight in nine months, don’t expect to loose it in one.

Health Dilemmas

I snore a lot when I’m sleeping and it’s embarrassing as I’m newly wed. Is there a way to stop it? Maisoun, Jeddah Typically, as you sleep, air passes through the nose and past the back of the throat without any trouble. But as muscles relax during sleep, the upper airway can become partially blocked, causing the soft tissue in the throat to vibrate and creating the cumbersome noise that is snoring. Loud and frequent snoring is a common warning sign for obstructive sleep apnoea, which is a serious sleep illness. Over time, sleep apnoea can increase the risk of high blood pressure, a weakened immune system, depression, diabetes, heart disease, and more. “Your mind, body, and overall health suffer from poor quality sleep, so it’s important to determine the cause of your snoring and take action,” says Dr. B. Gail Demko, a dentist who has practiced dental sleep medicine for more than twenty years and is president of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine - the only non-profit national professional society dedicated exclusively to the practice of dental sleep medicine.

Ask Nisrine

The American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine recommends these surprising remedies to help you stop snoring and sleep more soundly: 1. Change Position - When you lie on your back, you’re more prone to snore. By sleeping on your side or raising the head of your bed four to eight inches, you can help keep your airway open and prevent snoring. A trick to keep from rolling onto your back is to surround yourself with pillows or wear a rolled up hand towel in a fanny pack.

Email Nisrine Kreidieh at: nisrine@dazzlemagazine.com or by post to the Dazzle KSA office.

2. Avoid Alcohol - When it comes to snoring, a nightcap is a misnomer. Alcohol increases muscle relaxation, and relaxed throat muscles can make snoring worse. Come home from happy hour at least three to four hours before bedtime to minimize your tendency to snore.

5. Visit A Dentist - Did you know there are thousands of dentists trained to help treat and manage your snoring and sleep apnoea? Dentists experienced in dental sleep medicine can provide an effective, custom-fitted oral appliance that you wear during sleep to maintain an open, unobstructed airway. Oral appliance therapy is a comfortable alternative to the traditionally-prescribed CPAP machine and mask, and many patients prefer it as a solution for living with sleep apnoea. If you’re losing shuteye to snoring or sleep apnoea, visit www.LocalSleepDentist. com to find a dentist who offers oral appliance therapy. “AADSM recommends oral appliance therapy for people with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnoea or those who can’t comply with CPAP,” says Demko. “Once you’ve been diagnosed with primary snoring or sleep apnoea by a boardcertified sleep physician, a trip to a dentist for a custom-fitted oral appliance can be your key to better sleep and better health.”

4. Kick A Bad Habit - Cigarette smoking irritates and inflames your upper airway, increasing the likelihood that you’ll snore and raising your risk of developing sleep apnoea. Learn about the available options, such as support groups and nicotine replacement therapy, to help you quit smoking and put sleep problems to bed.

Ask Nisrine

3. Work It Out - Throat exercises can reduce snoring and the severity of sleep apnoea by toning muscles around the airway, which helps prevent it from collapsing during sleep. There are several exercises you can do that involve swallowing, chewing, and contracting the back of the throat. Strengthen your muscles by setting aside time each day for a throat workout.

Sparkle Hair

s t I x i F r i a H 8 Achieving beautiful hair doesn’t mean piling on products. They contain chemicals which overtime irritate your scalp and strip the healthy lustre of your hair. When it comes to beautiful hair, literally less is more, says Sonja Svensek… You can add volume, texture, curls and moisture to your hair naturally and safely. Regardless of your hair type, one of these methods will work for you: 1. Crank Up The Volume Lanky fine and thin hair screams greasiness and gives the impression that you don’t care for your looks. Achieving volume can be done by using a natural shampoo that doesn’t contain chemicals like Johnson & Johnson. After you gently towel dry your hair, tip your head forward and blow dry it till almost dry, focusing on your roots. Shake it loose using your fingers and throw your head back. Naturally you will have created the volume needed. Then, pull your hair up and tie it in a loose knot until your night out. Finally, when its time to leave the house, let it down and fluff the roots with your fingers and a comb to gently tease your roots creating extra oomph. 2. A Touch Of Texture If it’s texture you’re after, braid your hair in four different sections whilst it’s still damp. Though the actual effect won’t be there for long, the purpose is just

32

MARCH 2014

to create some texture. Before letting the braids loose, mix a little salt and water and spray on your hair to give it definition.

rub in some almond oil the night before you wash your hair. Not only will it be shiner, but much stronger too!

3. Rollerize Rollers should be used on your roots and as close to your head as possible. These can be put in when your hair is already dry after being freshly washed. Even though it’s the roots you focus on, the rest of your hair will still give the illusion of volume.

6. Put Out The Fire If your hair has been in bad condition for a while, a lack of water could be to blame. Drink at least one litre of water a day to hydrate your insides. You might want to supplement your diet with vitamins that help boost your hair’s lustre.

4. Tame The Mane With humid climates, we’re inevitably forced to use many styling products to keep our locks in place. Once you’ve washed your hair, add a little drop of olive oil and wrap your hair around your head or to the side depending on how long or short it is. Then cover it over night using a pure silk cloth. You will then wake up to glossy smooth hair.

7. Befriend The Snipper Unfortunately, there isn’t a natural cure for preventing spilt ends. Your hair needs regular trims every six to eight weeks. In the meantime, using almond or olive oil only at the ends should disguise them - although nothing looks better than freshly cut ends.

5. The Sparkle Effect We all dream of shiny hair that radiates health and brightness. Right before you end your shower, rinse your hair for a few minutes in cold water. This should ensure extra shine when it dries. If on the other hand you wash your hair daily,

8. Stop The Fall Rub in one tablespoon of castor oil with a spoon of almond oil and massage into your scalp twice a week. Castor oil works wonders on strengthening the hair and almond oil adds shine. If dandruff is the cause of your hair loss you need a stronger method: people swear by pine and coconut oil.

Dr. Pierre Nicolau on Injectable Fillers

Dazzle caught up with Dr. Pierre Nicolau, Consultant Plastic Surgeon at University Hospital Saint Louis, Paris, to get the lowdown on fillers and cosmetic procedures… Kalium Group of Companies, the regional distributor of advanced medical equipment, aesthetic devices, and skin care products, is showcasing its entire range of aesthetic and anti-aging skin solutions at the annually held Jeddah Dermatology & Cosmetics Conference taking place in Jeddah, KSA, on March 3-6, 2014.

of products, either designed only for volume like Hayluronic Acids, or for bio-stimulation like Ellansé.

Fillers can

When should fillers be used; is there an age specific time to start? There is no specific age to start. They can be used as prevention of skin aging as soon as folds or rhytids appear.

Among its doctors speaking at the conference is Dr. Pierre Nicolau, Consultant Plastic Surgeon at University Hospital Saint Louis, Paris, who will focus on the biological effects of injectable fillers. Dazzle caught up with Dr. Nicolau to get the lowdown on fillers and cosmetic procedures:

How are they like or different from Botox? Botulinum toxin is not a product to fill the skin, but to treat the cause of rhytids and creases. It will relax the muscles responsible for rhytids of the forehead, crows feet, and glabella (in the midline between the eyelids). It can also be used in other facial areas, where some muscles might be too strong and responsible for folds or creases like in upper lips, chin, or to lift the corners of the mouth. Its effects will last about five to six months.

only add more volume. They will not treat a large or high hump, but they can dissimulate it, or create a straight and higher dorsum, especially in Asian or African noses. But, if there is a high hump, a large or distorted nose, surgery is still the best solution for that.

Dazzle: What are injectable fillers? Dr. Nicolau: As their name indicates, they are products fluid enough to be injected in the skin or the deepest tissues, to compensate for aging changes. What applications can injectable fillers be used for? They are used mainly in the face, in deep injections at the bone level, to lift up the anatomical structures of the face to replace bone losses occurring with aging, or in the superficial layers of the skin to replace missing fat to fill superficial hollows and deep folds, or to rejuvenate the skin through newly formed collagen for treating fine rhytids [skin wrinkles]. We have a range 34

MARCH 2014

Are fillers effective in or as facelifts? Fillers do not have a “lifting” effect as surgery does. They will re-establish the losses of volume and will help recuperate the appearance of youth. But, the human face is not a balloon to be inflated, and precise anatomy has to be respected. How effective are fillers in rhinoplasty (nose restructuring or adjustment)?

What, if any, side effects are there from using fillers? Some side effects are due to the injection itself, like some pain, small bruises, and swelling. But all these can be prevented, avoiding aspirin and anti-inflammatory drugs, and telling your doctors about all the medications or treatments you might have. This is very important as no medical procedure, including for cosmetic purposes, is free of eventual side effects. Some complications could occur in the future post-procedure, like nodules or inflammatory secondary reactions, but not only are they very rare (less than one case per 1,000 injections), but the products responsible for these complications, like acrylic gels or permanent fillers, are less and less used nowadays. We read that the filler can sometimes be seen under the skin as tiny bumps; how likely is that to happen? The more superficial in the skin an injection is, the more risks

cold packs, or an infusion of local anaesthetic products.

there are to have an adverse reaction as the body will tend to protect itself from what could be recognised as a foreign body. Therefore, only very fluid products should be used in the superficial layers, like lowviscosity light-reticulation Hyaluronic acids or diluted bio stimulators like Ellansé. In the deeper planes, large volumes in any one zone have to be avoided. Better to inject

several small amounts. What’s the recovery time after getting fillers injected? Usually, swelling will subside within a few hours. Sometimes, if there are more marked bruises, they might last for a few days but will be easily dissimulated with make up. In any case, specific treatments can be prescribed. Does the procedure hurt? Any injection using a needle can be somewhat unpleasant, although true pain is extremely rare, and depends on each person’s tolerance. However, pain or discomfort is prevented using anaesthesia with creams,

When is it not advisable to use fillers? Filler use is contraindicated in the case of autoimmune diseases as this might trigger adverse reactions, including an upsurge of the disease itself. Locally, one should not be injected in case of acute Herpes or bacterial skin infection, or if you are under anti-coagulant or anti-inflammatory medications as this would increase the risk of bleeding and bruising. What is the price range of using fillers? It all depends on the type of filler used. Hyaluronic acids of short duration (six to eight months) will be relatively cheap. Biostimulators like Ellansé will be more expensive, but their effect will last for a much longer time as the newly formed collagen will persist for many years. www.dazzle-magazine.com

Talking Work Tech

According to a recent study conducted online by Harris Interactive on behalf of Microsoft, 16% of office workers would be willing to give up caffeine in exchange for better work technology that allows them to get things done wherever they are. The study also found that 53% of office workers would be willing to work more hours if they could have more flexibility in their schedules or the ability to get work done outside of their office. Jamie Hopkins from Imagination Yoga agrees and says that no matter where you are, the right technology can help you turn downtime into productive opportunity, no matter how odd the location might be.

Cloud services like Dropbox or Google Drive ensure that no matter where you go, and whatever device you have in hand, your documents and personal settings are available from virtually anywhere.

“The strangest place I’ve been able to get work done is when I was on a houseboat in India, on a yoga pilgrimage,” says Hopkins, Co-Founder of Imagination Yoga. “It’s important to me to have the ability to stay connected and productive and with Office 365, I was able to pay invoices and coordinate class schedules with my team. We’re able to get work done where and when we want, whether it’s volunteering at our kids’ schools, running our errands, or on the road.” Technology tools can be helpful, or can actually be the “enemy”. Do they help even when you have no Wi-Fi or Internet connectivity? Do your files stay formatted no matter what device you view them on? Will your information be secure and stay private unless you choose to share it? Ask good questions when you choose your technology tools, and follow these tips to help get things done at work and on the go: 54

Be productive from your phone. The phone can be more than a personal entertainment device, whether it’s answering email in between meetings or taking a conference call from the side of the road, you can get stuff done beyond the traditional nine to five with Office 365. Access and edit documents on your Windows Phone, and if you have an iPhone or Android phone, there’s a free Office Mobile app.

The always on, always connected way of life has benefits and drawbacks - our to-do list never seems to stop growing while the time never seems to stop shrinking. Technology makes freedom possible, but balancing personal and professional responsibilities requires more than the ability to work from anywhere, it’s about what you’re able to get done from where you are that matters.

Collaborate with anyone, anytime. Whether you’re online or offline, there’s no barrier (like lack of Wi-Fi) to being productive. Easily create and edit documents, then once you’re connected again, all you have to do is sign in to your Microsoft account to share documents with colleagues.

Stay organized. Ensure that your notes are saved, easy to share, and accessible wherever you need them by using a digital note-taking tool like OneNote or Evernote. Whether at work, on the go with your phone, or at your home office, your notes follow you wherever you go.

Easily connect with colleagues from anywhere. Use Lync to have an IM session, or Yammer to network with a colleague or someone you don’t even know to get your questions answered quickly, and if typing isn’t working, you can easily connect voice and video. Joining a meeting or feeling instantly connected to a team requires only a single click or touch on PCs and mobile devices. In today’s constantly connected world, being able to have the flexibility and right technology to get-it-done from anywhere is key. For more information visit www.Office.com. www.dazzle-magazine.com

Ravishing Renaissance Bedrooms

The Château de Bagnols hotel in Beaujolais, France, houses some very inspiring bedrooms that effortlessly recreate the spirit of the Renaissance period. Beautified with charming ancient decorative elements, each room evokes the romanticism of an era long gone by‌

The Dame Charrier de la Roche bedroom is part of a former chapel that was famous for its painted walls and ceilings. The paintings are modelled on the illustrations of a book by Sebastiano Serlio, who was a resident in Lyon in the 1550s, and the lower part of the walls feature inspiring words of wisdom by the writer. The bed is adorned with columns of painted and gilded wood, decorated with masks, garlands, and trophies, and it has a bedspread of antique crimson velvet embellished with braid made from gold thread.

The Boutechoux de Chavannes bedroom is an attic converted into a warm, cosy space. The highlight of the room is the beautiful ceiling with exposed beams as it gives the space a raw artistic touch. The ironwork bed, with brass acorn finials, has hangings of checked red and white linen that add a fresh, vibrant feel to the ambience. All the tables and chairs follow the design cues of the 18th and 17th centuries and feature intricately carved designs.

The Appartement aux Bouquets bedroom is simple yet opulent. The bed is beautified with a set of ancient yellow damask hangings that help brighten up the area without taking away its royal charm. The panels on the walls are decorated with geometric patterns, garlands, and flower vases, and above the fireplace, you’ll find a historic wall painting depicting the famous Titus Livius. The chic high-backed leather chair placed close to the fireplace is of Italian origin, decorated with gilded acanthus leaves and balusters.

Rich and tasteful, the Anne Dugué bedroom takes luxury to a whole different level. The room’s 18th century bed has an ivory silk hanging that’s finely embroidered with medallions, swags, and acanthus leaves. The extravagant look of the bed is completed with the addition of a crimson silk bedding. What stands out immediately in the setting is the mirror, which dates back to the time of Louis XIV and sports a gilded brass design. The 18th century walnut chairs and candle holders complement the mirror’s design and also add a touch of aesthetic uniformity to the area.

The Seigneur d’Albon deluxe bedroom blends different styles together to create an ambience that is charming and homely. The walls feature a light two-tone painting that lends to the room’s 18th century feel in terms of design and also contrasts the colours of the furniture to create a sense of openness. The bed has hangings of crimson silk velvet with a border of gold thread work that dates to the period of Louis XIV, and walnut tables and chairs are placed throughout the setting to further favour the room’s neo-classical feel.

The Joseph Hessler deluxe bedroom is brighter and more spacious than other rooms. Light colours are used predominantly throughout the setting, thus creating the illusion of added space, and the 17th century terrace complements this design feature by giving way to plenty of natural light during the day. The main design element of the room is the four-poster bed, which is adorned with bedding and hangings in a 19th century printed floral cotton that’s trimmed with braid and tassels of the same period. www.dazzle-magazine.com

Destination Disney

A dash of adventure, a sprinkle of fantasy, and a whole lot of fun: that’s one formula Walt Disney World knows best… Walt Disney World is located in the Lake Buena Vista area, which is to the South of Orlando, Florida, USA. Spread over a massive area of 25,000 acres, it’s both the largest vacation resort and most visited theme park resort in the world. It features four theme parks, two water parks, four mini golf courses, thirty-two resorts, and a wide selection of dining, entertainment, and shopping venues. If you choose to stay at a Disney Resort hotel, your hospitality will begin the minute you reach Orlando International Airport. Disney’s Magical Express Service will greet you at the airport, take care of your baggage claim, and drop you to

your hotel. If you have young children (babies), you should get a stroller because the distances between the parks are huge. Strollers can be hired from all the parks, but it works out to be a little expensive. A cheaper option would be to buy a temporary stroller from one of the local stores. The main park that attracts scores of visitors each day is The Magic Kingdom, a place that’s enjoyable for kids and adults alike. Covering an area of 107 acres, it has seven whimsical lands: US Main Street, Adventureland, Frontierland, Liberty Square, Fantasyland, Tomorrowland, and Mickey’s

Toontown Fair. Whether it’s shopping, adventure, sci-fi, or fantasy, these themed lands have it all. Another key attraction in the Kingdom is the iconic Cinderella castle, which happens to be the most photographed building in the world. The second most popular park is Epcot Centre, which is divided into two unique sections: Future World and World Showcase. Future World consists of pavilions dedicated to the environment, imagination, energy, space, technology, and the automotive industry, while World Showcase pays its tribute to eleven nations along with food, entertainment,

architecture, and attractions. Epcot is also home to the famous night-time show Illuminations: Reflections of the Earth, which is a firework and laser show that takes place on the World Showcase Lagoon every night. The other two theme parks include Disney’s Hollywood Studios, which is a movie-inspired park with shows and thrill rides, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom, an animal-based park with realistic settings, interactive rides, and static displays. All the parks are connected via monorails, buses and boats, and transportation is complimentary for Disney World Resort hotel guests. Dine & Shop The Downtown Disney Area is a famous outdoor entertainment complex known for its shopping, dining, and nightlife. Some of the popular spots there include Disney Quest Indoor Interactive Theme Park, Cirque du Soleil –

La Nouba, House of Blues, Virgin Megastore, Planet Hollywood, Rainforest Café, Pleasure Island, Wolfgang Puck, and The World of Disney Store. But no matter where you choose to eat, be prepared to spend big. The various parades at Downtown Disney are an absolute must-see, but you have to arrive early to get a good viewing spot. And if all the exploring tires you out during the day, don’t hesitate to retire to your room; just make sure to get your hand stamped for re-entry. The most popular shopping place is The Emporium, which is the largest gift and souvenir store in The Magic Kingdom. You can find a range of gift items there, ranging from Disney merchandise to candy. Located at Downtown Disney Marketplace, Once Upon a Toy is another very interesting store, offering five uniquely themed rooms that add up to 16,000 square feet of fun. Other shopping places include Pal

Mickey, Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, Basin, Disney Tails, Goofy’s Candy Company, EuroSpain/Arribas Brothers, LEGO Imagination Centre, and Mickey’s Mart. Disney World has a plethora of on-site resorts that offer early access to the parks and give guests priority for booking restaurants and shows. However, if you’re going on a strict budget, you should go for an off-site hotel. Areas like Kissimmee West, International Drive, and Lake Buena Vista offer a wide selection of reasonable hotels that provide regular shuttles to Disney World, so transportation won’t be an issue. From classic Disney fun, to adrenaline pumping adventure, Disney World offers the complete package for an action-packed family vacation. And while your children will love it for obvious reasons, the magical charm of Disney will undoubtedly tickle your fancy too.

Dazztrology Aries March 21 - April 20 You have quite a few opportunities for professional and financial success this month, and you’ll work through some financial and romantic trust issues. Be careful when entering into romantic or financial activities involving friends and/or internet entities. Your professional and home lives are still clashing and both are upset with you. The good news is that you get to launch a new you at the end of the month, which may fire them up, but it will be in your best interest to re-launch your outer personality.

Taurus April 21 - May 21 Friends, teammates, colleagues, and/or the internet are able to help you with issues concerning an adversary and also with the on-going political, religious, cultural, academic, legal, travel, or relocation oriented challenges that keep arising this month. It could be as simple as researching ideas online, asking a friend to help you, or creating a dynamic team to help you bring peace and balance to these areas of your life, which will happen towards the end of the month. Gemini May 22 - June 21 Your boss, father, or an authority figure might help you with a financial challenge this month, or it’s more likely that your own hard work, leadership, and willingness to take the high road at work will help you resolve the financial issues without help. You might want to make a new friend, join a team or club, or launch a new internet project, but it’s probably going to be tough to fund this new activity or you’re trying to make this new beginning happen in response to your current financial situation. Cancer June 22 - July 23 You are still up to your eyeballs this month in drama involving you, a partner or rival, and your boss, leadership roles, reputation, or professional goals. However, there are some great opportunities to mediate peace agreements and, eventually towards the end of the month, launch a completely fresh start with an authority figure and/or within your leadership role, reputation, professional goals, or career. Leo July 24 - August 23 I know I keep telling you that the dramas at work are still happening and that you’re finding joy in other areas of your life, but it’s still true. Things are building to a crescendo that will peak next month, then it sort of fizzles out. The good news this month is that you get two chances to make fresh starts, launch new projects, or make new connections. One involves romance, loyalty, or finances, and the other involves travel, relocation, cultural activities, or advanced education. Virgo August 24 - September 23 There’s still drama happening at work, but your finances seem to be benefitting. The drama is causing you to work overtime and this adds to your financial security even though it’s annoying to have to stay late to fix others’ mistakes and problems. Your partnerships are doing really well, but be careful about new financial or romantic partnerships as there’s a bigger than usual chance that things will end up chaotic and/or argumentative. Read the small print before signing anything this month. 62

MARCH 2014

By Skye Thomas Tomorrow’s Edge

Libra September 24 - October 23

There’s an on-going battle between your private and public lives. To make matters worse, a partner/rival is unhappy with things and is adding to the drama. Towards the end of the month, you’ll try to create a new alliance, a fresh start, or a new battle with this person or a new one. It’s going to be difficult to get things off to a positive start because of all of the drama related to the new beginning. The good news is that you have lots of opportunities to have fun and make professional/financial progress. Scorpio October 24 - November 22 During the first few days of the month, you’ll have some fun despite all the drama at work. Then during the end of the month, you’re able to launch a new beginning, work project, or a new job. You might also simply decide that you’re going to begin looking for a new job so that you can get away from all the arguing happening in your current one. If you’ve been struggling with unemployment, you may finally find work. Whatever it is, you’ll begin creating positive changes in life and at work.

Sagittarius November 23 - December 21 Your financial situation or the pursuit of wealth and financial security is making it difficult for you to enjoy some playtime. Your relatives and neighbours are still providing a mixture of fun and annoyances. What has changed is that you’re able to bring a lot of emotional, financial, and/ or romantic security into your home, private life, and/or retirement plans. You’re really enjoying spending time at home. You may decide to host guests rather than going out this month. Capricorn December 22 - January 20 The dramas are still on-going at home and adding to the battles between you and your spouse, best-friend, business partner, rival, enemy, or competitor. The good news is that you have a few opportunities this month to mediate and work towards agreement. By the end of the month, you’re ready to do things differently, or you’re bringing in a new person or relationship with a pre-existing person in order to improve things at home. Ensure that your partner knows that you’re genuinely trying to find solutions. Aquarius January 21 - February 19 Your career is the main focus of your attention this month. You have some wonderful opportunities to work towards achieving your financial and professional goals. However, you also have quite a bit of drama going on at work too. You are clever and able to manoeuvre your way around the various challenges, but it’s still stressful and something you would rather not have to do. Pisces February 20 - March 20 You recently went through a tough time as you were forced into rethinking your political, religious, legal, cultural, academic, media, or travel philosophies. You questioned the gap between what people know as facts and what is felt to be a secret intuitive truth about these topics. This month, you’re encouraged to explore, learn, and have an open mind as you reconsider what you’ve always believed. This will mostly be a fun and fascinating undertaking, not a boring or depressing endeavour.
