Get Great At Life

Why live an average life when you’re capable of living an extraordinary one? You have the potential to be great at everything you do, and the only way you can reach it is by embracing a new perspective in life…

12

JULY-SEPTEMBER 2014

Most of us don’t realise that we’re the ones who’re holding ourselves back from living the life we dream of. Your mind sets imaginary boundaries that dictate what you can and can’t do, but without any real basis. These boundaries stop you every time you’re presented with an opportunity to do something you wouldn’t normally do, which in turn inhibits you from discovering your greatness. Now before you read any further, take an eraser and wipe those lines away. Start with a clean slate, take note of these powerful lessons from Robin Sharma’s bestseller book, The Greatness Guide, and embark on an enriching journey. Seize The Opportunity Make the most of life’s opportunities instead of shying away from them. Sharma says that life presents us with little windows of opportunity everyday, and what we do with them shapes our destiny. “Shrink from them and your life will be small,” he says. “Feel the fear and run to them anyway, and your life will be big.” Even when it comes to dealing with your children, you have a tiny window to champion their highest potential and show them what unconditional love looks like. “Grab the opportunity while you can because when that window closes, it’s hard to reopen it.” Fail To Succeed Failure isn’t a dead-end; it’s the price of greatness and an essential ingredient for success. “The only failure you should be concerned with is the failure to dream and dare,” writes Sharma. “Because if you keep doing what you’ve been doing, you’ll keep getting what you’ve been getting.” So go ahead and take some risks. If you’re unsatisfied with

your marriage, ask your hubby for more love, and if you’re unhappy at work, take a stand and do something about it. There’s a big chance that you’ll experience more failure, but success will also start to pay more visits. The Happy Ten Sharma recommends making a list of ten activities that fill your heart with joy and remind you of how good life can be. Over the coming ten weeks, include one of those pursuits into your weekly schedule. He explains, “When you get back to doing those things that lifted your spirit and sent you soaring, you reconnect with that state of happiness that you may have lost. And a very big part of a meaningful life is to be happy, really happy.” It’s Okay To Say No Learn to say no because agreeing to anything and everything isn’t going to get you far. “Every time you say yes to something that’s unimportant, you say no to something that’s important,” remarks Sharma. He explains that you should only say yes to things that are in line with your priorities and goals in life. “Sure some people around you might not be happy. But would you rather live your life according to the approval of others or aligned with your dreams?” Stay Focused You can get everything you want if you stay focused. What you focus on grows, and what you concentrate on is what you see more of in your life. The author explains, “Focus on financial mastery and you’ll see your economic life improve. Focus on being more loving and your relationships will improve. Focus on your physical dimension by exercising and following a

superb diet and your health will improve. There’s great power in focusing on what you want.” Don’t Give Up The bigger you dream, the more obstacles you’ll face, but that isn’t a good enough reason to give up. Life will keep testing you at every step of the way, expecting you to fail and quit the game, but no matter how difficult it gets, you have to rise above the resistance and work towards your goal. “Whether you ultimately win or not, you will have made a difference,” writes the author. “And that’s what will make you exceptional.” Live Forever According to Sharma, to have a lasting impact on human lives – by being a great champion at work, a great parent at home, and a great citizen in your community – is to live forever. He explains, “Greatness comes by beginning something that doesn’t end with you, so stop worrying about death and care more about life. What act of kindness will you offer today? What fear will you beat today? What wrong will you right today? What person will you celebrate today? Leave an impact, make a difference, and find immortality.” Claim Your Greatness All of us are meant to live spectacular lives, but we need to do our part to make it all happen – choice-by-choice and step-by-step. “Lay claim to your greatness,” writes Sharma. “Drive a stake into the ground to mark your place under the sun. Stop being a prisoner of your past and become the architect of your future. And remember, it’s never too late to become the person you have always dreamed of becoming.” www.dazzle-magazine.com

Charm

Personality

When Attention Seeking Turns Ugly Histrionic Personality Disorder (HPD) is characterised by a pervasive and excessive pattern of attention seeking and emotionality. People with this disorder have good social skills as they’re enthusiastic, lively, and flirtatious, but they tend to use these skills to manipulate people and attract attention. “I love being the centre of attention,” says Maysoona. “It gives me a buzz to know that all eyes are on me, and I don’t mind if I have to dress provocatively for it.” Maysoona’s need to be inappropriately seductive is actually a very common HPD trait. Dr. Faiza Azim, a psychiatrist in Dubai, explains, “HPD sufferers are vain and overly concerned with physical attractiveness, which is

14

JULY-SEPTEMBER 2014

why they use seductive means to attain their goals.” Maysoona has no trouble finding men, but when it comes to handling the relationship, she fails every single time. “I’ve been told that I’m a very difficult girlfriend,” she says. “But I know that one day, I’ll find that perfect guy who’ll understand me and treat me the way I want.” Dr. Azim explains that women with HPD can’t keep a stable romantic relationship because they over identify with their partners. She states, “Since they’re intensely dependent on others, they project their unrealistic and unreasonable intentions onto their partners and expect them to follow through. And

when this doesn’t happen, they may show intense anger and engage in manipulative suicide threats. This behaviour is mainly because of their self-centred and self-indulgent attributes, and the fact that they tend to dramatise and exaggerate their problems rather than evaluating them realistically.” People with HPD may seem confident and strong, but they’re actually extremely insecure. Dr. Azim explains, “They believe that they’re not as beautiful or as smart as everyone else, so they feel the need to seek approval from other people. They always do and say things that they think are socially acceptable just to blend in with the crowd and feel loved.” A common outcome of this trait is excessive sensitivity

*Name has been changed on request of anonymity.

Maysoona*, 27, has a charming and outgoing personality that’s admired by all, but dig a little deep and you’ll find that her picture-perfect persona is only a façade. Beautiful on the outside and broken on the inside, she uses her body and emotions as weapons to control people. Maysoona’s attention-seeking behaviour is the result of HPD, a dangerous personality disorder that can ruin lives and destroy relationships…

to criticism; they may get very upset if people disagree with them or question their behaviour. Maysoona comments, “I wish I didn’t care what people think of me, but I do. I feel as though they’re attacking me, and I get so affected by it that I deliberately hurt myself just to feel better.” Dealing With HPD Maysoona has changed five jobs in two years for the same reason – boredom. She explains, “I’m the sort of person who lives for excitement. I can’t keep doing the same thing day in and day out because it’s frustrating and mentally exhausting!” Dr. Azim says that craving stimulation and excitement are typical HPD character traits, which is why such people tend to get bored of their usual routine. “They may start jobs with great enthusiasm, but their interest fades away quickly,” she explains. “They have very low tolerance for frustration, and the only way they can fight it is by changing things drastically.” Other common HPD traits include rapidly shifting emotional

states, making rash decisions, and getting influenced easily by other people. “All these factors may lead to depression and suicidal tendencies,” adds Dr. Azim. The exact cause of HPD is unknown, but it’s believed that both learned and inherited factors play a role in its development. While family genetics make up the inherited factor, childhood experiences are the learned factors. After studying Maysoona’s case, Dr. Azim believes that she has developed the disorder because of learned factors. She explains, “Maysoona didn’t get punished very often, but her parents gave her positive reinforcement only after she behaved in a certain way. Moreover, she was always given unpredictable attention; she was either showered with excessive love or completely neglected. All these conflicting parenting techniques have confused her about what types of behaviour earn approval.” Other childhood events such as deaths in the immediate family and divorce of parents may also

cause the disorder. Although it’s not possible to prevent the disorder, appropriate treatment can teach patients productive ways of dealing with their fears and concerns. The most common treatment is psychotherapy, which is aimed at self-development through resolution of conflict and advancement of inhibited developmental lines. Medication is also used to treat distressing symptoms like depression and anxiety. But unfortunately, like most HPD patients, Maysoona refuses to get medical help because she doesn’t see anything wrong with herself. She has even attempted to commit suicide to get out of therapy, but her parents continue to try and change her mind, and this is something that Dr. Azim says is very important. “If you know someone with HPD, do everything you can to get them treated,” she states. “It’s going to be a tough battle, but you have to fight it because a harmless attention-seeking condition can, and will, turn into a fatal disorder.”

Bedazzled Relationships

Relationship Wrecking Mistakes Finding a potential soul-mate is just half the battle – the real game begins when you have to keep him for good. But if your game plan involves any of these deadly tactics, you better change your ways before your relationship crumbles to pieces…

1. Fake Impressions Fake it till you make it seems to be the name of the game nowadays, but pretending to be someone else in front of your man is wrong and extremely immature. Kareem Abdullah, a selfemployed IT professional from Jeddah, concurs, “You don’t have to be wild in the bedroom if you’re not the type, you don’t need to make up emotional issues to win our affection, and you certainly don’t have to kiss-up to us! Just be yourself and give us genuine reasons to fall in

16

JULY-SEPTEMBER 2014

love with you.” 2. Change Protests We’ve all tried to change our men at some point, but when does that ever work! In fact, the harder you try to make him more romantic, chatty, caring, or anything else, the farther he runs away from you. “You’re wasting your time by doing so,” says Rasheeda Malik, a relationship expert in Jeddah. “You can’t change a guy’s values, attitudes, or behaviour unless he himself is motivated to do it. So instead of damaging

your relationship by forcing him to change, enrich it by accepting, expecting, and respecting the differences.” 3. Ex Files Talking about your ex to your current may seem like an ingenious plot to get what you want, but it’s not. While you’re chatting away about how your ex would surprise you with romantic meals in hopes of getting one in the near future, he thinks you’re comparing him to your past. “It’s an

insult for a guy to be compared to his lover’s exes,” remarks Abdullah. “We get the feeling that we’re not good enough, and it completely crushes our ego. We want to be accepted just the way we are, not because we act like someone else.” 4. Cling On If you think tightening the leash will keep him close, think again. Acting clingy, needy, and insecure will only turn him off and push him away. Kamel Fakieh, a mechanical engineer from Jeddah, agrees, “It’s annoying when your girlfriend constantly calls you and wants to be with you 24/7. It’s a sign of desperation – an absolute relationshipkiller.” According to Malik, women cling because they’re afraid of being abandoned. “But instead of smothering him with your insecurities, work through it with people in your support system,” she adds. 5. In-Depth Analysis Stop yourself the next time you

try to decode the real meaning behind what he tells you. If he says he’s crazy about your looks, it means he thinks you’re beautiful. Period. It doesn’t mean that he loves you just because you’re beautiful! “Unlike women, men always say what they mean,” explains Fakieh. “We never speak with a hidden context or ulterior motive in mind, so stop gruelling us with pointless interrogation sessions!” Abdullah adds, “We’re forced to think twice about every small thing that we say, and it eventually reaches a point where we can’t take it anymore.” 6. Psychic Expectations It’s not fair to expect him to magically know what you want, when you want it, and how you want it. He isn’t psychic, and he never will be, so don’t get upset every time he does or doesn’t do something. In fact, using the ‘you-don’tknow-me-at-all’ card is going to work against you; if you keep fighting with him because he doesn’t think from your head, you’ll eventually drive him to the point of no return. “Actually, you’re better off if the guy doesn’t think on the same lines as you,” comments Abdullah. “Because if he did, you’d get bored of him in no time.”

7. One-Sided Romance Don’t think that being romantic is the guy’s responsibility alone; you should also romance him from time to time. Fakieh explains, “Men love it when women do special things for them. We feel loved and appreciated, and we take the relationship more seriously.” But he also warns that an excessive shower of affection could lead to disastrous consequences. “Going overboard with romantic gestures sets off all the wrong buttons in us. We start to wonder if we’re on the same page as you, and it completely freaks us out!” 8. Too Much, Too Soon No matter how much you’re into him, you can’t profess your love to him early on in the relationship. “The one thing that really repels a man is when a woman tells him, ‘I think I’m falling in love with you,’ after just a couple of weeks,” comments Fakieh. “We instantly think that you’re the clingy sort of woman who wants to rush into a long-term commitment, which isn’t the least bit attractive.” Abdullah adds, “Share your feelings only after the guy initiates the conversation. If he loves you, he’ll certainly tell you, so relax, lean back, and enjoy the ride.”

Bedazzled Friendships

Lending Money: The 6 Golden Rules Most of us lend money to our friends without thinking it through. We give away huge sums of money in the name of friendship, only to realise that our buddies have no intention of paying us back. But as with all things in life, lending money has certain rules, and it’s in your best interest to abide by them no matter what…

Rule # 1: Trust Factor The most important thing you should do is figure out if your friend can be trusted or not. You can safely lend the money if she has been a trustworthy companion, but if she’s the kind of person who breaks promises and goes back on her word, you’re better off not giving her the loan. Glenda Rossdale, author of Lend Money the Smart Way, explains, “There are two scenarios when it comes to untrustworthy borrowers: first, they may take longer than expected to repay the loan, and second, they may not pay it at all. Either way, it’s going to take a toll on your friendship, so your best bet is to stay away from the role of the lender.” Rule # 2: Credit Check Find out if she owes money to other people. Give her the loan if her credit history is good,

18

JULY-SEPTEMBER 2014

and don’t entertain her request if she has a lot of outstanding debts. “Some people have a habit of borrowing money from one party to pay off another debt,” says the author. “And if it’s your buddy who’s stuck in this vicious cycle, there’s no telling when she’ll pay you back.” In fact, not only should you refuse to help her out, but you should also discourage her from taking more loans because it could harm her in the long-run. Rule # 3: Investigate Ask her why she needs the loan. Agree to pay only for important things like hospital bills, children’s tuition fees, and so on, and say no for unnecessary things like Botox injections and nose jobs. Rossdale comments, “If you lend money for unimportant ventures, you’ll be spoiling her, and she’ll

start taking your money for granted. There’s no reason why you should be the sacrificial lamb, so let her know that she can’t use you for fulfilling her whims and fancies, and that you’re willing to help her out only if there’s a serious problem.” Rule # 4: Be Reasonable Always lend what you can afford to lose. You should never get so carried away that you end up jeopardising your own financial situation because there’s no telling what tomorrow may bring. “Think of the loan as an investment in the stock market,” adds Rossdale. “Nobody invests all their savings in the stock market because the risk factor is extremely high, and that’s exactly what you should keep in mind when you’re loaning money to a friend. Ask yourself how much you’re willing to risk and make

sure that you still have enough for a rainy day.” Rule # 5: Set A Date Set an actual date for repaying the loan. Most of us feel uncomfortable to give our friends a deadline, but the author says that not doing so could hamper the relationship in the future. “If you don’t tell her when you want the money back, she won’t think it’s important to you, and she’ll take her time to repay it,” she says. “Her

laidback attitude will make you think that she used you, and you’ll start harbouring all sorts of negative feelings towards her.” So if you want to avoid all the frustration and drama, be upfront and make an agreement from the beginning. Rule # 6: You Owe Me Let her know that you’re doing her a favour. Don’t ever give her the impression that you could do without the money because it can

ruin your chances of getting the loan back. “You have to make sure that she understands where you stand with the whole situation,” says the author. “Even if you haven’t had unpleasant lending experiences in the past, make up a story and tell her how you’re going against your past experiences to help her out. Doing so will make her feel indebted to you, and she’ll want to repay the loan as soon as possible.”

Limited job options, stiff competition, and new technological advances require job seekers to step up their game in order to stand apart from the crowd. In today’s tech savvy world, this includes not only updating your resume, but also using new online technologies to augment your research and organization. While this may seem a bit daunting, insider advice from a few career experts can help you with recommendations for job search success using the web:

Landing Your Dream Job: A 4-Step Plan

Careers

Makeover Your CV “The first thing a job seeker needs to do is to update their resumé with the terminology and formats used in the desired industry,” says Kirsten Wright, Career Services Director for The Art Institute of Washington. Research professionals working for the industries you want to work in to see how they phrase their skills and abilities, and then tailor your resume to a similar format. “A general resume that highlights achievements with a position-specific cover letter is the best approach,” says Wright. “Hiring managers can spot a generic cover letter a mile away. When each resume and cover letter gets less than 20 seconds to make a first impression, that first impression is critical.” She also recommends that you consider doing a video resume to complement your standard materials as a great way to set yourself apart. Make A Company Wish-List Once you’ve selected the top fifty companies you would like to work at, create a folder for each (physical or electronic) that includes the company name, location, website, contacts you have there, human resources manager, manager of the department you’re interested in, top management, products or services, and positions available. Ed Hunter, The Art Institute of Philadelphia Career Services VP, suggests using social media to help research your preferred companies. “Set up Google alerts on each company so you know what the media are saying about

them,” says Hunter. He also recommends following both the company and the managers on Twitter, liking their Facebook pages and connecting on LinkedIn. “This will help you stay abreast of new products, services, changes in staff, and even new position announcements.” Network, Network, Network You’ve used social networking on a personal level; now is the time to make it work for you. Use the networks you’ve developed online to gather information about job openings. Let your online friends know what you’re looking for. “It’s fine to engage the managers you’re following on social networks,” says Debra Pierce Miami International University of Art & Design Career Services Director. “Be sure your communication relates to the company or the profession, as people blatantly looking for a job are quickly avoided.” You can even refer to these interactions during an interview. Pierce also reminds job seekers, “It’s important to manage your online presence since hiring managers will do an extensive search on a candidate prior to hiring them. Be sure to eliminate unused social media pages and to delete any material that you wouldn’t want an employer to see.” Remember that social media hasn’t replaced personal contacts. Many employment opportunities still come from people you know or have met in person so continue

using your offline network of friends, colleagues, and family as they too will be valuable in your search. Implement Your Action Plan Armed with information and job search tools, it’s time to put your job search strategy in place. Spend at least two hours every day searching online, tweaking your resume and cover letter, and following up on job openings. Make sure that each resume and cover letter is customized to the job you’re applying for - mirroring the wording to match the job description when appropriate is important. Bruce McCain, Career Services Director for The Art Institute of Tampa, a branch of Miami International University of Art & Design, reminds job seekers, “Organization is key. Maintain a list or spreadsheet to track goals you’ve set for each week, jobs you’ve applied for, follow-up you’ve done, passwords for various websites, and the status of each company on your wish list.” Competition is fierce, so it’s important to use all the latest tools at your disposal to be successful in your job search. And when you get that interview, just pull the information from the company folder you’ve created, review your online interactions with the managers you’ve engaged, and get ready to land that job. BusinesswitQuickie h Ali Dabaja Every month we speak to an expert or practitioner in a field for some invaluable insight. This month we spoke to Ali Dabaja, CEO & Founder of Hajjnet… Give us a brief background on your job/company and your role in it. Our purpose is to empower Muslims with technology to make fulfilling our faith obligations safer, more informative, and convenient. That may sound strange at first, but Islam is a complete way of life. The Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages are an integral part of our lives here in the region and to Muslims all over the world. Today, around 25% of the world’s population are Muslims, and clearly many of us are using Google, Twitter, Facebook, smartphones, etc. As a company, we aren’t interested in creating a “Facebook for Muslims” but rather plugging into that existing ecosystem with specific and relevant solutions and products that are unique to our lives and challenges as Muslims.

22

JULY-SEPTEMBER 2014

Hajjnet was founded in Dubai in 2012 shortly after we recruited and relocated our Head of Engineering from the US to Dubai. My role is to support the company and team to develop products and services that are consistent with our vision. That could range from helping team members in nonbusiness related things that affect their lives, to working with them to conceptualize our products. The most important thing I do is continually working to recruit and keep the best team members, and then organizing or structuring the business so we can all contribute to creating products and services that make an impact. Walk us through a typical workday. My typical day is “atypical” in that our organizational needs vary greatly from day to day and are always changing. We have intense periods of team

That’s very difficult for me to comment on. What I can say is that

Careers we hire and organize our team based on skill and merit. We don’t take into consideration race, religion, or gender. How does technology affect your job and how do you apply it? I would rather say that our job is to affect technology - creating it and applying it. The most important and challenging part of that is choosing where to try to use technology to alleviate pain points for users. An example of this is our adoption of the “mobile first” strategy. In order for us to build mobile apps that could support pilgrims, we first needed to understand the process from a user’s prospective. To do that we brought a known expert in Hajj and Umrah onto the team and hired a professional illustrator to storyboard the Umrah and Hajj processes. We have about 200 drawings covering half of our office space that graphically tells the story of Umrah and Hajj from the user’s perspective. We’re constantly referring back to that storyboard to see where we can be supportive in the process. What are the important exhibitions/magazines/ things to know and follow in your industry? It’s important for us to be involved in two major areas: mobile and online technology, and Hajj

and Umrah. This means we attend a range of conferences like the Global Islamic Economy Summit or the World Hajj and Umrah Convention, as well as something like the Mobile Show. The media landscape is always changing, especially in this region. I try to read Bloomberg BusinessWeek (Middle East), Arabian Business, and online sources like Business Insider, but most of what I consume comes over Facebook or Twitter, originally coming from another source. Today we’re grouping and organizing ourselves vis-à-vis information and interest topics and sharing information much more efficiently. There are people like Guy Kawasaki at which I will look twice at every tweet or post of his due to the relevancy to my interests and needs. What are the ethics of your job/industry? I’m really happy to be in my industry because our purpose is very clear: to create technology that makes our users’ lives safer, more informed, and convenient. We invest all our time, money, and resources into that objective. We aren’t sitting around thinking about how to restructure mortgages to be more profitable or how we can bill more hours. What skills, characteristics, personality traits are needed for your job?

Creativity, determination, fortitude, communication, and networking are a few of them. It’s important for us to understand that teams and relationships are our biggest assets. That holds true in personal as well as business life. What are tricks of the trade that you can impart with? Understand what it is that would make your business a success and focus on that. That may sound like an oversimplification, but when it comes down to it, we have to always be asking ourselves if what we’re investing in will get us to our goals. We have hundreds of ideas for new features, but we have to continually challenge our process to understand if it’s truly impactful on the user’s big picture experience. Your tips for motivating yourself and others. Understand what your goals are and what impact achieving them will have on your customers or users. If money is your sole or primary motivator then it will be much harder to achieve your goal. Our team is motivated by our vision and how we are impacting our users’ lives. Your tips for time

management, life-work balance. In my opinion, trying to achieve a life-work balance that’s unrealistic can do more harm than good. Be realistic in measuring your deliverables and time/ effort required with managing your personal life. Just like you would do in your business, analyse time periods, days, weeks, months, and measure your business requirements versus what you expect is needed from you. Don’t be ashamed to take a weekday off or to get extra rest when you need it. What are the ingredients of running a successful organization? There is one key component in the adult human body, which happens to be water at 57%. The same holds true for a business, there is a key major component, which is team. A lot of large corporations pay lip service to this, but in smaller organizations it’s make it or break it, and although we have run into many obstacles, the tipping point that continues to create critical mass and drive us forward is our team and, fortunately, our team continues to grow. Secrets to success in this field/job. Build things for yourself - products and services that you yourself would need and use.

What’s the business model you believe in and follow? Our key goal is to be useful if not essential to our users and from that we derive our success. Who do you see as your role model/CEO and why? This may seem odd to readers outside of the UAE, but the Rulers of the UAE have inspired me and continue to do so. They have incredible vision, and what we have witnessed in terms of development and improvement in terms of quality of life and availability of opportunity is incredible. A company like Hajjnet can only happen in the UAE; we look around at the skyline, metro, and infrastructure and know that we can dream and achieve. How do you see the future of your industry? We’re only at the cusp, and even what you see in the market of our products is nothing compared to what we have in development. I assume this is true throughout the industry, and these are extremely interesting times because we are now seeing the products and innovations come alive that many predicted in the 90s. Your advice to local entrepreneurs who are trying to make it big? If there is one key thing that I can advise you,

it’s to only work with or take counsel form people who have done it before. There are an abundance of self-proclaimed experts and even a chorus of voices ready to validate them, but in the end you must ask them what they have done and how many times they’ve done it. There are lots of people doing things and we live in a global community, so no need to limit yourself to somebody in your country, reach out to those that know and have done for advice. Your advice to someone entering this field? Talk to everybody in the space that you can and make sure you’ve refined your concept and cooked it enough before jumping. Once you’ve got something, you can build a team around it: advisors, investors, and employees. Remember, the people get the money, and if the money is buying the people, then you might not have the right formula. Your words of wisdom to the Dazzle readers? Work with a team that values and shares the company’s vision and will aspire as a human being to achieve it.

Ramadan Health

FAQ: Diabetes, Exercise, Diet, and Fasting Imperial College London Diabetes Centre is a one-stop, outpatient facility that specialises in diabetes treatment, research, training, and public health awareness. The Centre was established in Abu Dhabi by Mubadala Healthcare, in partnership with the UK’s Imperial College London in 2006 to address the growing demand for diabetes care in the UAE. A second facility in Al Ain opened in 2011. Together, the Centres have offered diabetes prevention, education and treatment to more than 160,000 people. For more information visit www.icldc.ae. This Ramadan, ICLDC experts offer insights on safe and healthy fasting while living with diabetes: Is it Ok for me to fast during Ramadan if I’m living with diabetes? During fasting, about eight hours after the last meal, our bodies start to make use of energy stores to keep blood glucose (sugar) levels normal. For most people, this is not harmful. However, a problem can occur if you’re living with diabetes, such as the risk of high glucose levels following the larger meals that we eat before and after fasting at Suhoor and Iftar. This year the fasting period is long (15 hours in the UAE) meaning that the risk of Hyperglycaemia and dehydration are high. It’s very important that anyone living with Type 1 diabetes understands that they’re at a higher risk compared to those with Type 2 diabetes when fasting. It’s crucial that if you’re a Type 1 patient and intend to fast, that

28

JULY-SEPTEMBER 2014

you’re closely supervised and ensure that your blood sugar is regularly monitored to mitigate health risks.

and in extreme cases can lead to Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA), a serious condition requiring hospital treatment.

If you’re living with Type 2 diabetes, generally, it’s perfectly safe to fast provided that you talk to your doctor about your plans and prepare yourself well. But, it’s not safe for everyone with Type 2. Your ability to fast safely often depends on your prescribed medication, and, therefore, it’s really important for you and your doctor to assess your medication programme before the start of your fast. Your doctor will guide you to create a fasting plan that works for you.

How risky is fasting with Type 1 diabetes? In general, people living with Type 1 diabetes are at very high risk of developing severe complications, and are strongly advised not to fast during Ramadan. If you’re living with Type 1 and really do want to fast, you must consult your doctor before embarking on the daily fast.

A lot depends on how well your diabetes is controlled, especially if you’re prone to either frequent high blood sugar levels (Hyperglycaemia), or low blood sugar levels (Hypoglycaemia). For example, if you’re taking certain tablets and/or insulin, fasting carries the risk of Hypoglycaemia,

What are the risks if I fast and I’m living with Type 2 diabetes? If you’re living with Type 2 diabetes and have successfully embraced a healthy lifestyle by maintaining a normal body weight through the practice of a balanced diet and regular physical activity, the risks associated with fasting are quite low. However, following a period of fasting if a very

large, excessive meal is consumed there is a potential risk of postmeal Hyperglycaemia after the pre-dawn and sunset meals. One simple solution is to distribute energy intake over two to three smaller meals during the non-fasting interval. This may help you avoid post-meal Hyperglycaemia. As with diet, your daily exercise should be less intense to avoid

episodes of Hypoglycaemia. If you’re taking prescribed oral medications and insulin, do consult your doctor to discuss the risks, which will vary from person to person. Do I need to go on a special diet during Ramadan? The good news is that if you’re already following a balanced diet, then there’s a big chance that you don’t have to change the ingredients of your diet. In fact, you should eat as you normally do, with the only difference being the time you eat your meals, rather than quantity or type of food consumed. The diet should be kept simple and contain foods from all food groups. Iftar is the meal that breaks the fast; it’s important that it remains a meal and doesn’t become a feast! One other thing to be particularly aware of is the risk of increasing blood sugar levels after Iftar, especially if you eat sweet food. Also, you

must take special care to drink plenty of water during the non-fasting hours so that you remain comfortably hydrated during fasting hours. At Suhoor you should eat starchy carbs, which release energy slowly, such as multigrain bread, oat-based cereals, basmati rice together with beans, pulses, lentils, fruits, and vegetables. Other foods that will keep your blood glucose levels more stable throughout the fast include pitta bread, chapattis, and semolina. As with all meals, eat sensibly, don’t over eat, and remember to drink plenty of water. What are the risks of fasting during pregnancy with diabetes? Pregnant women are strongly advised not to fast, and indeed Islam releases a pregnant woman from fasting. However, some still like to fast and if diabetes, including gestational diabetes, is also present, this is considered a highrisk scenario that requires intensive care. Pregnancy involves a state of increased insensitivity to insulin and insulin secretion. During fasting, blood glucose levels are generally lower but postmeal glucose and insulin levels remain substantially higher in healthy pregnant women than in women who aren’t pregnant. Elevated blood glucose levels during pregnancy may be associated with increased risk for major congenital abnormalities.

Ramadan Health It should also be remembered that the issues concerning the management of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes also apply to pregnant women, along with more frequent monitoring and insulin dose adjustment. Is it Ok for diabetic children to fast, and what are the guidelines? In Islamic teaching, children aren’t required to fast until they reach the age of puberty. Children with diabetes who choose to fast do pose a management challenge for paediatricians as the majority of guidelines and data on safety and metabolic impact of fasting are based on practice and studies on the adult population. It’s very important that fasting only takes place under the watchful eye of the child’s doctor. Is there an increased risk of dehydration in hot countries? Yes. Dehydration due to reduced intake of fluids may become severe in hot and humid climates like the UAE, especially among those who perform hard physical labour. On top of this, Hyperglycaemia can result in the loss of body fluid through excessive urination, and contribute to depletion of electrolytes in the body. People with pre-existing nerve damage may develop symptoms of low blood pressure like dizziness or lightheadedness. This can lead

30

JULY-SEPTEMBER 2014

to loss of consciousness and falls. It’s very important that fluid intake during non-fasting hours is maintained at a regular pace. What can people do if they wish to exercise during hot weather in Ramadan? It’s good to do some moderate exercise just before Iftar, and again just before going to bed, as well as right before Suhoor. In hot weather, outdoor exercise might not be the best option, so try climbing the stairs. Start slowly and gradually with two flights at a time and refrain from pushing yourself too hard during the first few days. Of course, after sunset and just before dawn, a short, brisk walk for 10 minutes is a good practise to adopt during Ramadan. If you decide to pop out to a mall in the evening, park farther away from the entrance, walk the extra distance, and also enjoy a brisk walk around the mall walkways. Is it ok to test my blood glucose while I’m fasting? Yes, testing your blood glucose levels regularly is important and will keep you safe while fasting. This will not break your fast. Do I need to wake up for Suhoor? Yes. Long hours without eating increases the risk of Hypoglycaemia. You must try to eat a meal at Suhoor just before sunrise and not

at midnight as is common practice. This will help to keep your glucose levels more balanced throughout the fast. Should I stop taking insulin? No. You should never stop your insulin. But you must speak to your doctor because you may need to change the dose and times of your insulin injections. Insights On Fasting Do people tend to lose weight during Ramadan? Ramadan isn’t always thought of as being an opportunity to lose weight because the spiritual aspect is emphasised more generally than the health side. But, fasting can be good for your health and can lead to moderate weight loss if it’s practised correctly. When the body is starved of food, it starts to burn fat so that it can make energy. This can lead to weight loss. However, if you fast for too long your body will eventually start breaking down muscle protein for energy, which is unhealthy. This is unlikely to happen during Ramadan as you will break your fast daily and the body’s energy can be replaced during the pre-dawn and dusk meals. This provides a gentle transition from using glucose as the main source of energy, to using fat, and prevents the breakdown of muscle for protein. The use of fat for energy helps weight loss. It

preserves the muscles and eventually reduces your cholesterol level. In addition, weight loss results in better control of diabetes and reduces blood pressure. However, if one does eat more than normal during Ramadan, this can and does have adverse effects, including weight gain, and even hospitalisation through overeating when breaking fast.

How can people avoid putting on weight during Ramadan? It’s important to remember: don’t break your fast with a feast. As you approach the fast with discipline, the same approach should be used during non-fasting hours. Food intake during Iftar and Suhoor should be simple and not differ too much from your normal diet. It should contain foods from all the major food groups. Foods to avoid are the heavily processed, fast-burning foods that contain refined carbs such as sugar and white flour, as well as fatty food like cakes, biscuits, chocolates, and sweets. It’s also worth avoiding caffeine-based drinks such as tea, coffee, and cola. Caffeine is a diuretic and stimulates faster water loss through urination. How can indigestion be best avoided after a day of fasting? Indigestion is

common in those fasting, and can often occur when you break your fast. The problems are varied, including abdominal distension, constipation, and vomiting. Put simply, the body can’t cope with the sudden intake of too much food, leading to indigestion and heartburn. Another problem is that many tend not to exercise during Ramadan, preventing food from being properly digested. Problems occur when people try to eat too much too soon. Many will attempt to consume in 6-8 hours the amount of food they would have over an entire day. Instead you should start slow with food and eat gradually. The most important thing is that you have to start with fluids and non-fatty, low calorie food. If you’re a smoker and break the fast with a cigarette, this can lead to heartburn and indigestion. What are the best drinks to have in Ramadan to quench thirst and offer nutrition? Water is the most important fluid that replenishes your thirst. It plays a significant role in weight loss and maintenance because it helps to get rid of toxins and reduce the feeling of hunger. Try not to drink large quantities of water all at once or a lot during a meal. Instead drink water between your meals and drink small quantities of water throughout the night. In addition to water, drink fresh fruit or vegetable juices rather than sweetened ones.

Health Dilemmas

Some of my friends have started doing Zumba, others are doing TRX, and some others are doing Pilates; there are so many different exercise options and I don’t know what to go for. Can you help me decide? Abla, Riyadh With so many fitness trends, you might not think of walking as good exercise. If you’re not thrusting a kettle-bell over your head, pushing a tractor trailer tire, or shaking your hips to a Top 40 dance beat in a scheduled group class, you’re not cutting it, right? Well, not so fast. Walking is actually a great way to get in shape. In fact, if you walk often enough and fast enough, the simple act of putting one foot in front of the other can satisfy your body’s daily requirement for aerobic activity.

Ask Nisrine

Walking may just seem like an old method of exercise; it certainly is tried and true. But, quite the opposite of out-dated, it seems to be making a resurgence in the health, fitness, and medical worlds as a low-cost solution to on-going healthcare concerns. Renowned medical expert Dr. Andrew Weil is an advocate of walking as a crucial method of preventative care. He advocates walking as a low-risk means to optimum health. “With a consistent, brisk walking routine, you can boost your immune system, help manage weight, improve your mood, and help ease depression as well as improve cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure, and prevent osteoporosis,” says Weil. “The additional benefits may be endless.”

Regarded as a leader in the world of integrative medicine, Weil is part of a panel of experts with Vionic Innovation Lab, an innovative footwear company leading the way for proper foot health and active lifestyle solutions. With new products such as the Zen walking shoe, Vionic offers podiatrist-designed technology in contemporary styles, providing innovative support for anyone in need of a supportive shoe or sandal to start or improve her walking routine.

The buzz about walking has even reached the stars. Fitness trainer to celebrities such as Kate Walsh, Pink, and Stacey Kiebler, Juliet Kaska has been known to start many of her high-profile clientele with a consistent walking routine. Also contributing to the Vionic Innovation lab as a lifestyle expert, Kaska recommends walking as a great baseline for any fitness program, but reminds her followers to “invest in a good pair of walking shoes. They will do wonders for your posture and joints. Minimizing the impact of each step. Look for lightweight, flexible shoes and be sure to replace them often, especially if you’re walking every day.” As you develop your walking program, set your own pace. As a general rule, taking 10,000 steps a day is a great goal for improving your overall physical, emotional, and mental fitness. But the journey, as they say, begins with a single step. There’s no better time than now to begin.

Need more convincing reasons to walk onto the bandwagon? Here’s why walking for exercise is so ideal: 1. Walking is what your body is designed to do. 2. Among all forms of aerobic exercise, walking carries the least risk of injury. 3. You can walk almost anywhere, any time. 4. Nearly everyone can walk, and it’s something you can do throughout your life. 5. It’s free. 6. There’s no special skill, training, or equipment needed - all you need is the right footwear.

Ask Nisrine

The walking movement is growing: The American Centres for Disease Control and Prevention reports that between 2005 and 2010, the number of adults who walked for 10 minutes or more at least once a week rose from 56% to 62% - an increase of almost 20 million people.

I want to make sure that my teeth are healthy so I can avoid the dentist as much as possible; can you help? Bahia, Jeddah

If you’re concerned about your oral health and looking to protect your physical and financial well-being, one of the easiest ways to do so is to practice preventive care. Attending bi-annual dental check-ups and making smart oral health decisions can help you spot a concern well before it becomes an expensive problem.

Ask Sonja

Despite the obvious benefits of adhering to preventive care, many people forget this simple routine and risk bigger expenses down the road. Here are some easy tips you can follow to invest in a healthy smile and protect your oral health: Get serious about flossing. Daily flossing is one of the most important things you can do to improve your oral health. Floss helps to get down into the crevices between the teeth. This is where plaque resides. Daily flossing helps you remove this plaque before it turns into tartar. Find the toothbrush that’s right for you. As the main tool for scrubbing and brushing away unwanted plaque, the toothbrush tends to do the heavy lifting. Most dentists today recommend using an electric toothbrush. This allows you to give your teeth a better cleaning in less time, and it ensures you are brushing with the appropriate pressure.

What’s your toothpaste of choice? With so many kinds of toothpaste, personal preference plays a big factor. Toothpastes vary by flavour, whitening power, and other additional features, so it really comes down to your brushing goals. Whichever brand you select, make sure the box has the American Dental Association (ADA) stamp. This way you’ll know your toothpaste has been regulated and tested.

Maintaining good oral health doesn’t have to be hard. With the right tools and an established daily routine, you can ensure your minor oral health concerns don’t lead to major dentist bills in the future. To learn more ways you can improve your oral health, visit CrestProHealth.com.

Your smile is affected by what you eat. There are many products on the market that can help you whiten your smile, but you can also improve your pearly whites by making the right food choices. Eating strawberries, broccoli, apples, and cauliflower, or drinking water and dairy products help to whiten your smile. Meanwhile, you should avoid drinking red wine, tea, coffee, and cola as these drinks can stain your teeth.

sonja@dazzle-magazine.com

Don’t forget the mouthwash. People tend to forget about this important last step in a mouth cleansing routine, but a recent Good Housekeeping study found that “More than 9 out of 10 respondents who aren’t currently mouth rinse users (93%) said they would use it if it could help improve their dental visits.” Look for a mouthwash like the new Crest Pro-Health Tartar Protection rinse. Brilliant Tech

Talking Work Tech

Stay ahead of the curve and prevent reduced productivity by maintaining your machines, upgrading your services, and adopting new technologies. Here

JULY-SEPTEMBER 2014

are five ways to make technology work better for you. 1. Go Paperless Reduce the desk and office clutter by cutting down on the paper scattered about. Tablets and other devices are making it easier than ever to go paperless. For example, a digital scanner can turn paper into PDF files, allowing you to take on clients, no matter where they are. “I have clients nationwide and internationally, and now I’m able to prepare their taxes

and do their accounting without having to meet face to face,” says accountant Andrew Poulos. 2. Embrace Cloud Storage At least 77% of cloud-familiar consumers aren’t backing up their most important items, according to a recent Harris Poll online study, which means they’re missing out on an opportunity to have their files with them anywhere they are. Using a service like OneDrive allows you to save photos, videos, and documents organized all in

Article: www.Brandpoint.com.

For every new computer, gadget, or service there are several different stages of ownership. Unfortunately, the first and happiest phase, the honeymoon, doesn’t last forever. Eventually, devices slow down, services get out-dated, and in the end, the ailing tech begins to work against you.

one place, accessible on any of your devices. 3. Upgrade As Needed A simple upgrade can add years of life to your existing devices. For example, adding memory or storage to desktop computers will make them perform better and last longer. Or, instead of upgrading your hard drive, try a networkattached storage device, which will let multiple computers on your network easily connect to shared storage. Updating your operating system is also smart, but if you use an outdated system like Windows XP, it’s easiest to upgrade to a new computer entirely. “In April, Microsoft will no longer provide support for Windows XP,” says Kristina Libby, the company’s PR Director. “We understand the upgrade process sounds daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. There are great offers and deals for consumers out there, and retailers who offer trained staff to help you choose a Windows 8.1 PC or tablet that’s right for you.” 4. Pack More Power

The more you use a mobile device like a tablet or smartphone, the faster the battery will drain. So make sure you have plenty of power to keep your electronics working. That’s what San Francisco-based DataSong does, equipping everyone at the marketing analytics agency with portable USB-powered batteries. “Having power banks to charge our phones in an emergency has been incredibly productive,” says Traci Lee Chu, the company’s Marketing VP. Frequently on the road or working on site with clients, DataSong staffers use the backup power to keep their smartphones and tablets connected to the company’s big data apps. 5. Leverage The Right Email Tools Email is one of the most used technology services. In fact, the average person will receive more than 10,000 emails this year, according to The Radicati Group, Inc. Fortunately, you can take control of your inbox and increase your productivity with a number of tools and features so you can eas-

ily manage and get to the mail that matters to you most. The first step most users take when cleaning their Inbox is to get rid of emails that they don’t want. For these emails, features like Sweep in Outlook.com allow you to easily delete (and, if you want, block) emails in bulk by deleting a large number of emails from certain senders, keeping only the latest and most relevant messages. This is especially helpful for daily deal mails, or if you want to easily unsubscribe from unwanted mail altogether, try using the simple one-click unsubscribe feature. 6. There’s Always A Solution Technology, like any tool, should make your job easier. In general, if you find your devices and services are slowing you down instead of speeding your productivity along, stop and assess the problem. From simple workflow tweaks to total system overhauls, there’s always a solution to get you back on task and make you more efficient than ever.

Brilliant Interiors

Décor Summer Spruce Up The relaxed pace of summer allows the perfect opportunity for home improvement updates, says experts at Liberty Hardware, an American hardware company since 1942… With little tweaks here and there, you can make your favourite room stand out with some simple ideas that take less than a day to complete from start to finish. “Home interior experts know small decor tricks that take very little time and can have a big effect,” says Elizabeth Sasso Smith from Liberty Hardware. “Homeowners can use these same strategies to make changes easily and quickly inside their own home.” Here are some ideas to get you get you started: Wall Plates Perhaps one of the most overlooked ways to quickly and dramatically update a room is to replace the wall plates. Wall plates are the covers that go over the light switches and outlets. Most people default to boring, white plastic that can make a room look generic and cheap. Decorative wall plates can complement any design scheme, and because they can be removed, are a great option for those who rent or others who might want to change them out from time to time with minimal effort. Wall plates are the fashion accessory that every wall needs to add visual appeal. They come in all sorts of shapes and colours to fit every decor style, from modern, sleek designs that feature finishes like brushed nickel, to classic and elegant options with finishes like satin nickel and espresso. Paint If you are looking for a big change with minimal effort, consider a fresh coat of paint. Dark and vivid colours remain popular and provide a focal point for the eye. Shades of green and grey are trending right now, as well as hues of blue in every colour of the ocean. Pick up some paint samples from the store and bring home to see how they will look in the natural light of the room. Interested in trying a bold colour, but not sure about how it will look in the entire room? Choosing a single wall to paint is a great way to add colour without going all out. For example, if painting a bedroom, choose the wall where you put the head of the bed. If you are painting a living room, choose the wall where the couch or your largest piece of furniture goes.

JULY-SEPTEMBER 2014

Hardware Cabinet hardware changes are typically made in the kitchen or bath, but knobs and pulls have multiple uses if you think outside the box. “Consider coordinating the colour and theme of your new wall plates into a clever curtain tie-back using a knob or pull,” says Christina Hurley of Liberty Hardware. “A similar finish will add a design flow that creates character and pizzazz throughout the room.” Some other ideas for coordinating knobs include fixing them on a wall or door to hold a coat, towel, or bag. You could even hang pictures using coordinating knobs and metals. Instead of simply nailing the frame to the wall, tie it with a beautiful ribbon and hang on a knob that matches your wall plates and other hardware in the room.

Hooks and Hook Rails Other eye-catching additions to a room include hooks and hook rails. While they may have once been deemed for industrial or heavy-duty use, new contemporary and traditional designs along with complementary finishes like satin nickel and hazelnut allow hook rails to take a more prominent, decorative position in a room. Installation is simple and quick, allowing for a modern appeal and instant coordination with wall plates and other hardware. Think creatively and find a new place for items that often get tossed on the floor like book bags, belts, or purses while at the same time featuring as a décor ornament. A small hook rail placed in a closet is perfect for hanging jewellery for easy access, or spice up your garage or extra room with a decorative hook rail to hold sports equipment and other knickknacks.

Remember, it doesn’t take a lot of time or money to transform your interior space. With just a few easy updates like wall plates or hook rails you’ll be amazed at how different and beautiful your room will look.

Capri: Italy’s Hidden Treasure The isle of Capri is one of Italy’s most glamorous and exotic holiday destinations. The island is known for being a favourite among the rich and the famous, and its spectacular scenery has inspired some of the most prominent writers of our time…

58 JULY-SEPTEMBER 2014

Capri is a small island situated on the south side of the Gulf of Naples. The island’s climate is pleasant and mild throughout the year, and it has plenty of natural attractions like cliffs, hills, olive groves, and garden terraces over-

looking the Mediterranean Sea, Naples, and Vesuvius. Capri has several paths and steps, enabling adventurous tourists to explore the island on foot and experience the magnificence of its churches, villas, and ancient ruins.

It’s accessible through Naples, which provides regular transport in the form of taxis, rental cars, and buses. The heart of Capri is the Piazetta, a closed-off square that resembles a

courtyard. It’s the centre point of the island’s social life as it houses numerous restaurants, bars, shops, and hotels. You might find the Piazetta’s narrow lanes and crowded streets overwhelming at first, but give it a few days and you’ll start enjoying its largerthan-life atmosphere. As you move away from the area, you’ll notice that the enchanting turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea surround the island from all sides, allowing you to experience the very best of Mother Nature. In fact, no trip to Capri is complete without a tour of the sea because some of the island’s most beautiful spots are inaccessible by land. You can opt for organised tours or rent a private boat to explore the island and find that perfect secluded spot for sunbathing or swimming. The Blue Grotto is a natural phenomenon that exemplifies Capri’s beauty and history. It’s believed that Emperor Tiberius made the 60-metre long cavity his sanctuary, and to make the ambience more pleasing, he had his artists paint on the walls and create statues depicting

Triton and Poseidon. Since the opening is very narrow, you’ll have to lie on the bottom of the boat to get into the grotto. Swimming isn’t permitted there, but you can dip your hand in the water, and you should because its magnificence is definitely worth an experience. Your boatman will probably sing for you, but if he doesn’t, you should do it yourself just to witness the grotto’s amazing acoustics. Other grottos that are equally famous among tourists include the Sailors Cave, Emerald Cave, Coral Cave, and Cave of the Vela. Mount Solaro is Capri’s highest point; you can get there either by walking or taking the chairlift. We suggest you take the chairlift because it allows you to reach the top quickly, while also giving way to a splendid view of Anacapri and the Gulf of Naples. Once you’re on top, you’ll see an array of historical buildings, including the remains of the Fortino di Bruto, a blockhouse built in the early 19th century during the battles between England and France. Not far from Mount Solaro is the Garden of Augustus, where you can find several rare Mediterranean shrubs like maritime pines, myrtles, and junipers. Shopping Avenues Shopping in Capri is tasteful, fun, and exciting. Not only will you find the latest designer outfits and exclusive Italian jewellery, but you can also witness the making of traditional products. Domestic artists

leave their studios open all day long, allowing tourists to walk in and watch them create beautiful ceramics, paintings, sculptures, and perfumes. The most famous stores for jewellery are La Campanina by Alberto and Lina, which houses an enormous collection of bracelets, necklaces, and earrings, La Fiorente, a luxurious boutique that sells pearls, corals, and watches, and Claudia Gioielli, which specialises in 18 karat white gold jewellery mounted with precious stones. Your shopping escapade must include a visit to Canfora, a world-renowned shoe boutique that has served famous international figures like Naomi Campbell, Grace Kelly, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Humphrey Bogart, and Sofia Loren. Classy and elegant, the boutique has a wide variety of handmade leather sandals that are embellished with fabulous costume jewellery. Matching the sophistication of Canfora

is Mariorita, which is often described as a temple of style because it houses prestigious brands like Valentino, Armani, Hugo Boss, Trussardi, Ice Berg, Versace, Vilebrequin, and Moschino. It also has a large department store dedicated to luxury Italian handicraft, ceramics, and exquisite items of inlaid furniture. Since Capri thrives on tourism, you’ll have no trouble finding authentic Italian souvenirs. Shops like La Capannina Più and L’Oasi specialise in local handicraft products and gifts for the home, while Masterpiece and Seagull are upscale stores that sell Murano glass and handpainted Italian ceramics, respectively. Our recommendation is to take back an exquisite Carthusia perfume, which beauti-

fully captures the island’s essence and the freshness of its flowers. Stay And Dining Finding accommodation that suits your budget and needs is very easy thanks to the island’s numerous hotels. The Capri Palace Hotel and Spa is a five star establishment that offers a great view of the sea, and it’s a favourite among stars like Whitney Houston, Harrison Ford, Julia Roberts, Keanu Reeves, and Mariah Carey. Other popular upscale accommodations include the Hotel Punta Tragara, Hotel Caesar Augustus, La Scalinatella, Ambassador Weber Hotel, Hotel ‘A Pazziella, and Hotel La Floridiana. Capri also has many bed and breakfast establishments that are reasonably priced and high on comfort. Places such as

The joy of eating out in Capri can’t be described in words. Indulgent pastas, mouth-watering lasagnes, and sinful tiramisus are just a fraction of the island’s offerings, and the more you explore, the more delectable delicacies you’ll find. Al Grottino, The Aurora Restaurant and Pizzeria, and Buca di Bacco are the oldest restaurants in the island, serving excellent local and Neapolitan cuisines, while Capricorno and Villa Verde are the new comers that are quickly becoming extremely popular. If you like seafood, head on to Sollievo and try the lemon risotto with fish - you’ll love it! In fact, no matter what you eat, where you go, or what you do, you’ll fall in love with everything that Capri has to offer. Picturesque, lively, and charming, the island is an experience in itself, and a holiday there is nothing less than a dream come true.

Your home life is undergoing quite a lot of activity. On the one hand you’re dealing with something or someone that keeps upsetting you. So maybe the thing that annoys you is also motivating you to make some positive changes. Taurus April 21 - May 21 Your chart area that focuses on interpersonal communications, negotiations, commerce, local communities, and getting your point across is experiencing a lot of activity this month. It’s a great month for socializing, hanging out with local friends and family, and for bargain hunting and sales. But, the good side is that you and a partner/rival are inspired to work things out. Gemini May 22 - June 21 You have some great opportunities to achieve your financial goals this month. Unfortunately, you need to watch out for allowing social connections to negatively affect your finances. You could be spending too much money on social outings or internet activities, or you could be dealing with a friend’s request for loans. You need to avoid mixing finances with your social activities. The good news is that you’re entering into a year of lucky commercial, business, and bargain hunting opportunities. Cancer June 22 - July 23 The planet of good luck enters your chart area that governs wealth and self-worth this month. The next year should be a good one financially. However, to begin with, you are encouraged to set financial goals and consider tightening your budget in order to achieve those goals. JULY-SEPTEMBER 2014

By Skye Thomas Tomorrow’s Edge

Libra September 24 - October 23

This month is all about work, financial goals, and climbing the Ladder of Success. You have a handful of planets moving through your chart area that governs success and leadership. They’re doing all they can to help you either take on leadership roles or make nice with your boss so that you can be awarded key assignments. Towards the end of the month, group activities, committee meetings, teamwork, and socializing are starting to become more important. Scorpio October 24 - November 22 You could be torn between wanting to take time off from work and wanting to stay and help fix the problems happening at work. The good news is that most of your work related dramas are going to calm down next month. If you do choose to go on vacation, they will interrupt you with phone calls. If you don’t go on vacation, then make sure to weave plenty of playtime and intellectually interesting activities into your schedule so that you can shake off the daily office dramas.

Sagittarius November 23 - December 21 A lot of romantic or financial trust issues are coming up. There’s a lot of chaos in this area of your life and you’re having a tough time navigating who to believe, who to love, and/or who to invest in. The good news is that the portion of your chart that focuses on inner peace, meditation, and intuition is sending you a strong stable energy to help you quiet your mind. So, even though this is not necessarily fun, you pull through just fine because of you’re your own best council. Capricorn December 22 - January 20 You and your spouse, best-friend, or business partner/rival have been in an on-going battle for months. This month, you have some arguments concerning your private life, roommates, parents, or retirement plans. But, overall the two of you are making a lot of progress towards working things out. You’re able to socialize, network, shop, negotiate, and do all of your social bonding together without trouble. Your only issue is about something or someone in your private life, and that battle ends this month. Aquarius January 21 - February 19 You have a great deal of positive energy promoting the idea that you should be focusing primarily on achieving your financial, fitness, and/or professional goals. However, you also have a few hurdles to overcome. You could find yourself entering a new partnership/rivalry. It could be a fun playful rivalry or a real professional rival. If it is a professional, romantic, or social partnership that you’re creating, you find that your boss, father, or professional goals are clashing with this new person. Pisces February 20 - March 20 The planet of good luck and adventure left your playtime sector and entered your work and health sector. It should be a lot easier to get through your daily tasks and to begin working on a fitness routine. The planet in charge of passion and personal power left your romantic and financial trust sector and moved into the chart area that encourages you to learn new things. You can expect to see some big changes in your life over the next few weeks as you adjust to these new areas of interest.
