Anniversary Special May 2013-May 2014

The Past Year The Dazzle-ing people and events that have graced our covers over the last Dazzle Year (May 13-May 14)…

June 2013 For our Father’s Day Special we included an inspiring interview with one of country music’s stars, Tim McGraw, who had then just launched his latest album ‘Two Lanes Of Freedom’. He’s a shining example of success, optimism, and wisdom for his three daughters.

MAY 2014

July-September 2013 For our summer special our focus was summer and bridal issues as weddings are, and always will be, a summer staple. For the cover, we featured Carolina Herrera’s Summer Brides where each wedding gown was “designed with a specific woman in mind and with the intention of creating something that represents her personal style. There are gowns here for all types of brides and destinations,” according to Herrera.

October 2013 With October being a month of many faces: the official start of autumn, Halloween, and BCA, we got busy putting everything October together. For our cover we focused on phenomenal success, that of Taylor Swift who, in just seven years, became a household name. She won CMA’s Entertainer of the Year twice, been named Billboard’s Top Artist of the Year, and taken home Album of the Year at the 2010 Grammy Awards - the youngest artist and first female solo Country artist ever to do so.

Anniversary Special May 2013-May 2014

November 2013 For our A/W Special, we compiled everything autumn, from fashion to tips to apps, but for the cover we featured an inspiring success story of The Court Yard Hounds, sisters Emily Robison and Martie Maguire who were a part of the group Dixie Chicks. They made a successful comeback after their former group was dismantled following a public statement against former president George Bush’s politics.

December 2013 For the Holiday Special we featured an interview that captures the essence of X-Mas with TV’s popular Robertson family, the Duck Dynasty. While busy filming the next season of their show, they recorded and released a festive album, Duck the Halls: A Robertson Family Christmas, which features members of the Robertson family singing classic holiday tunes as well as originals.

January 2014 For the New Year, and in the spirit of new beginnings, we featured a profile on the 22-year-old Logan Brill who released her debut album, Walking Wires. With her powerful and upbeat voice, she brought to life many serious stories and issues, and demonstrated the inspiration and motivation you need to succeed and shine in 2014.

February 2014 With the Awards season underway, we focused on the spectacular success of the celebrities that fascinate us with their performance, style, and charisma. In SAG Awards Outstanding Performance we featured the results of the 20th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, presented by SAG-AFTRA, which honoured outstanding performances from 2013 in five film categories and eight TV categories.

March 2014 For our Mother’s Day Special we featured many expert opinions on parenting and motherhood issues, but for the cover we featured the most anticipated event of the year, The Oscars. Being the culmination of the Awards season, the 86th Annual Academy Awards celebrated and honoured the leading actors, actresses, directors, and teams of Hollywood.

April 2014 For he official onset of spring, we focused on the season’s beauty, style, and trends. Our cover beauty, Flawless Beauty with MAKE UP FOR EVER, featured the experts at MAKE UP FOR EVER offering a step-by-step guide to applying makeup from their HD Range for flawless, HD results everyday and on every occasion.

The Quarterlife Crisis

People in their 20’s have a lot going for themselves. They’re young, attractive, free, and they have their entire future ahead of them. Sounds perfect; but is it really? Asks Hafsa Mahfooz… The 20’s can be rather confusing for most of us. You have all these expectations regarding what you want from life, but life doesn’t seem to agree with you and you’re forcibly steered onto a path that you never thought you would take. As a result, all your dreams, priorities, and ambitions change, forcing you to question who you really are and where you’re heading. This baffling phase that you’re

18

MAY 2014

going through is called the Quarterlife Crisis (QLC), affecting anyone aged between 21 and 29. In her book, ‘Get It Together: Surviving Your Quarterlife Crisis’, Damian Barr sheds light on the reasons for QLC and its overbearing dynamics. She explains, “Physically, socially and sexually, our twenties are supposed to be our peak. We 20-somethings

are supposed to be hopping from gym to party to bed (with pauses in the boardroom), but it’s not like that. It’s like this: you’re 25, but you feel 45. You should be having the

“Feeling you should be having, doing, or being more is the core of QLC”

time of your life, but all you do is stress about your futurefree job, scary debts, alleged friends, and non-existent partner.” When young adults join the real world, they have to come to terms with the responsibilities of adult life, as a result of which they feel a range of emotions and several insecurities begin to creep in. They feel insecure regarding present accomplishments, the near future, their long-term plans, and life goals. Barr states, “Feeling you should be having, doing, or being more is the core of QLC.” Emotions Multiplied Fatima, 23, moved back to Jeddah after completing her degree from the States. Although she knew that her life would be different from her college friends’, she couldn’t help but compare her life with theirs. She explained, “My first job was nothing like I had imagined it to be; it was menial, repetitive, and downright boring. I was extremely jealous of my friends back in New York because they were living large and I was hardly living!” One of the most common emotional implications of QLC is feeling that you’re not good enough because you can’t find a job that lives up to your qualification, let alone expectations. Thus, you look at your friends with envy and make yourself believe that they’re better off. Barr states, “20-somethings feel stressed, inadequate, and somehow not quite as good as their peers. We feel poorer, less successful and less together.” Disappointment from one’s

job often leads to the need to engage in deep selfintrospection. As a result, many young adults seclude themselves from social interactions and prefer spending time alone. They constantly re-evaluate their close interpersonal relationships, reminisce about their school or college life, and feel loss of closeness to their high school and college friends. Fatima concurs, “I was a social butterfly when I was in college; I had a lot of friends and I loved meeting new people. But as I started growing old, I grew out of that whole friends-for-life thing because I had my own issues to deal with and I just didn’t have the energy to work on my personal life. Sadly, I’ve lost too many friends over the years.” QLC often makes people feel like they’re losers because of all the disappointments they face, but nobody likes to admit it. This secrecy leads to frustration, anger, and anxiety within the individual, adding to the stress of dealing with the crisis. Plus, the dynamics of office-life also contribute to QLC. In college, everyone’s around the same age and a common ground exists with regards to thinking and mentalities. But work places consist of people belonging to different age groups, with new graduates being the lowest in the chain. Thus, there’s a difference in opinion every step of the way, making the adjustment process difficult and stressful for young adults. Crisis Control People going through QLC are often silent sufferers, thinking they’re the only ones who’re going through an

identity crisis. But in reality, every 20-something is going through the same insecurities because the world today is different from what it used to be during our parents’ time. It’s now more competitive and less forgiving, with little or zero tolerance towards mistakes. Barr explains, “Ask any 20-something how they’re doing and they’ll bravely say, ‘fine’, but scratch the surface and you’ll see that for many of us all is not fine. No other generation has had so much choice or such great expectations. Being 20-something now is scary; you have to fight millions of other graduates for your first job and find time to juggle all your relationships.” Unlike the midlife crisis, QLC is still not widely recognised and there aren’t any experts who could shed light on this matter. So if there’s no professional help available, how does one cope with it? Well, the key to dealing with QLC is to simply ignore it. You might not know where you’re heading today, but you’ll find out eventually. Reality hardly ever plays out the way you want it to and you have no choice but to deal with it. Don’t fret over the future, don’t give up on friendships, and don’t doubt yourself because everything falls into place. As Barr rightly put it, “The decisions we make now are incredibly important, but they’re rarely irreversible.”

Personality - March 2014

The Predator Parent As scary as it sounds, some mothers intentionally hurt their own children to seek attention. Discover more about this mental disorder called Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy, says Nisrine Kreidieh… Not so long ago, a shocking and horrific video showing nannies maltreating their children caused a worldwide frenzy. The crime was unforgivable, horrendous, and we felt no mercy or compassion towards the accused. But what if I told you that the abusive caregiver is sometimes the child’s own mother? And I’m not referring to child abuse conditioned by a slap on the hand or yelling in the face, I’m talking about serious damaging matters that cause toddlers and young children to get hospitalized. In fact, the mother who abuses her own child has a mental illness called Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy (MSBP). To understand this well, let me enlighten you with its precedent, Munchausen Syndrome. Munchausen Syndrome is named after a German military man, Baron von Munchausen, who travelled around relating fantastic tales about his imaginary exploits. In 1951, Sir Richard Asher, MD, FRCP, applied the term ‘Munchausen’ to people travelling from hospital to hospital, fabricating various illnesses. Persons with this disorder intentionally cause signs and symptoms of an illness by inflicting medical harm to their body, often to the point of having to be hospitalized. They enjoy undergoing medical interventions to get the sympathy and attention given to ill people. They also move

20

MAY 2014

from doctor to doctor, hospital to hospital, or town to town to find a new audience once they’ve exhausted the treatment options available in a given medical setting. According to Marc D. Feldman, MD, “In MSBP, a mother either claims that her child is sick or she goes even further to actually make him sick. Her acting skills are just as good as any veteran actor.” This ‘devoted’ parent continually presents the child for medical treatment, ignoring the fact that she is actually the origin of the problem. As a result, the abused child may undergo extraordinary numbers of lab tests, medication trials, and even surgical procedures that are uncalled for. The MSBP predator might induce apnea (a cessation of breathing) by suffocating her child to the point of unconsciousness, then frantically take him to the hospital for treatment. Behind closed doors she may scrub the child’s skin with oven cleaner to cause a blistering rash that lasts for months. It can even go as far as injecting him with insulin or not feeding him for days so that she can complain of low blood sugar levels or unconsciousness. It should not be surprising that this form of child abuse has a mortality rate of nine percent. The Web Of Deceit

The Kathleen Bush and Vyonne Eldridge cases in the States caused nationwide panic a few years ago. Both these mothers had children with serious medical problems; Jennifer Bush suffered from intestinal problems and Eldridge’s two daughters had so many complications that they were left weak and undernourished. As a result of their quest for sympathy and attention, the children underwent several operations, surgeries, and painful lab tests. And because of their so-called devotion, both mothers received praise of the highest order from the American government. But, recently they were diagnosed with a personality disorder that drove them to manufacture illnesses in their children. But who would do such a thing? Inflicting such pain and suffering on a child contradicts everything we’ve come to love about motherhood. Professionals explain that the MSBP parent is on a misguided mission to feel special. According to Marc D. Feldman, “It is an attentionseeking behaviour due to psychological problems in the adult. However, the syndrome can be life-threatening for the child involved because this unusual behaviour can escalate to the point of severe physical harm or even death.” Because this is a form of child abuse, the syndrome must be reported to the authorities. Psychiatric counselling is recommended for

Predator Pointers The following are some of the signs that signal towards an MSBP predator: The child’s symptoms do not fit a classical picture of illness or do not fit well together. The child’s symptoms improve at the hospital but reappear at home. The parent is over attentive or ‘too helpful’. The parent is often involved in a health-care field such as nursing. Blood in lab specimens doesn’t match the patient’s blood type. The presence of drugs or chemicals in serum, stool, or urine samples cannot be accounted for.

the parent involved, but since the disorder is rare, very little is known about effective treatment. Sadly, every parent who is seriously advocating for their child nowadays is in imminent danger; families across the world are being destroyed by doctors or medical professionals who make false allegations to evade a malpractice lawsuit. But justice is now being served to innocent mothers with the help of an organization called M.A.M.A (Mothers Against

Munchausen Allegations). In 2003, it shed light on the famous Sally Clark case, as a result of which the guilty paediatrician was discredited in the UK. Sally was a lawyer who was wrongfully convicted and sentenced to jail for the death of her two boys. She was discharged from prison after the conviction was squashed. The fact that some medical professionals are abusing MSBP to save their name is just sickening. It is a serious

mental disorder that can be life-threatening for the children involved, but directly accusing the parents is not the answer. These people have a psychological disorder and medical professionals should offer them help before anything else. In conclusion, Marc D. Feldman added, “If you suspect a parent may be abusive towards her children, consult a psychiatrist to seek confirmation. Paediatricians and nurses cannot make such a diagnosis because this is not their forte.”

Relationships - December 2013

: t e G o T d r PlayingeHCaheat Notes Th

Whether we accept it or not, we’re often responsible for driving a potential love interest away by playing too hard to get or seeming too available. The key is to play the game right – to get his attention and keep it till he’s all yours. No woman should show a man straight away that she’s into him, but at the same time you don’t want to come off as disinterested. Actually, there’s a fine line between playing hard to get and blowing someone off, just like you also drive a person away when you appear to be too keen. Thus, even one tiny mistake in this complicated game of love could cost you a potential happy ending. So what’s acceptable and what’s not? When should you give in and when should you hold back? Find out the Do’s and Don’ts of playing hard to get… To Call Or Not To Call? Your behaviour in the initial stages of attraction will determine how the relationship will end up. It’ll be tempting to call him everyday, but you have to fight the urge because you don’t want him to think that you’re always available. Call him once in a while and only when you’re already occupied with something else; this will make him work harder to get your attention. But don’t make him work too hard – remember to make that phone call! Divide And Rule When you’re hanging out in a group, don’t shower him with

22

MAY 2014

excess attention and ignore the others. Divide your attention equally among everyone and make sure he knows that your attention isn’t that easy to get. But keep in mind that a man really values his pride, so don’t ignore him to such an extent that it bruises his ego. The trick is to leave him craving for more, so don’t hesitate to put up your price. Be Unpredictable The biggest turnoff for guys is when women become too predictable, because then the challenge doesn’t seem worth the effort. So if you make things too easy for him, he’ll move on to greener pastures. What you should do is give him mixed signals – flirt with him today and act like a complete stranger tomorrow. Not only will your behaviour puzzle him, but it’ll also intrigue him and push him to try harder. Play His Weakness We all have certain physical and emotional aspects that attract and even repel the opposite sex, so find out what exactly draws him towards you and use it to your advantage. For instance, if you find out that he really likes your eyes, you should make

it a point to highlight your eye makeup every time you meet him. This will definitely make him weak to his knees and he’ll never want to take his eyes off you. Take It Slow No matter how much you’re into him, don’t go around telling the whole world about it because the news is bound to get to him. And when he finds out, he’ll bail out because nothing freaks a guy out more than an obsessive girl. However, you also shouldn’t deny liking him if someone asks you because that’s equally detrimental. Just smile and say, “We’re friends for now, but who knows?” Be Yourself Guys are smarter than we think! So if you pretend to be something you’re not, he’ll catch on to it in no time and write you off completely. Always remember to be yourself with him, even if you’re not the kind of girl he usually goes for. For all you know, he could be looking for something different this time around, so don’t be afraid to show him what an amazingly different chick you are. And if he can’t like you for who you are, then he’s not worth it in the first place.

Friendships - October 2013

r e v O g n i Gett F F B x E Your Ending a friendship is often as painful as ending a relationship. Although you weren’t romantically involved with your friend, you shared a special connection with her that was unique to both of you…

Some people try to get over the pain by convincing themselves that their friend was nothing less than horrible. They forget about all the good times they shared with their friend

24

MAY 2014

and focus on everything negative that happened. Shumeila from Jeddah chose to humiliate her friend in hopes of feeling good about breaking the friendship. She explained, “For some reason, the only thing I could talk about was how Abla* was such a terrible friend and how badly she treated me. I told everyone about everything that happened between us, but a part of me was still sad about letting her go. I just publicized our lives and got nothing out of it.” “Putting your friend down in front of others is immature and it won’t do you any good,” explains Dr. Rita Marl, Relate UK relationship therapist. She explains that the key is to handle the situation with an open mind and a positive attitude. And to get over the break-up, she advises: Get Closure Many of us tend to get carried away in the heat

of the moment and decide to break the friendship immediately, without even attempting to end things on a positive note. This results in a state of uneasiness because we don’t get proper closure. However, it’s never too late to talk it out and end things in a proper way, so speak to your friend openly and honestly, and explain to her why you ended the friendship. Despite not being friends anymore, you both will have a new found respect for each other. Get Busy Make it a point to keep yourself occupied as much as possible to avoid brooding over the friendship that was. So take up a new hobby, join a gym, or just start socialising more. It’s true that new friends seldom ever replace old buddies, but they’ll definitely help you fill the void you feel after letting a friend go. Thus, allow yourself to get close to new people because it’ll surely help

*Names have been changed.

We’ve all had some toxic friends who’ve done us bad in the friendship, leaving us with no choice but to end it. But no matter how bad a friend has been, you did spend some of your best times with her, and shutting her out completely from your life is not easy. Hanaa, teacher from Jeddah concurs, “After I got married, my best friend’s attitude towards me really changed. She would taunt me for every little thing I did and it got to a point where I just couldn’t take her negativity anymore. So, I decided to end the friendship. Shockingly enough, it was really difficult to forget about her because she was very close to me. It was really heartbreaking to let go of our friendship.”

you get comfortable with the breakup. Be Practical If you and your friend belong to the same group of friends, don’t expect your other buddies to stop being friends with her too. Understand that they have nothing to do with what happened between the two of you; so asking them to pick sides is unacceptable. Instead, explain to them that you’re not comfortable being around her and you’d prefer to hang out with them when she’s not around. Your pals too will have a tough time coping with the breakup, so make it easier for them by handling the situation maturely. Be In Control Many of us harbour extremely negative emotions towards our ex-friends without understanding that we’re only giving them more control over our emotions by doing so. Now that you’ve closed that chapter of your life, there’s no point going back to it and reliving all the pain with every person you meet. Thus, instead of wasting your time and energy whining about her, focus your energy on making the most of your present. Let Her Be Now that you’ve chosen to keep her out of your life, refrain from keeping a tab on what she’s up to. You don’t need to talk about her, you don’t need to ask your friends about her life, and you don’t need to scan her facebook for gossip because it’s not worth it. This is going to be difficult and emotionally challenging at the beginning, but it’ll eventually help you detach yourself from her.

NY Business Resolutions

The success of your business requires you to be focused, resourceful, and plan-oriented. Read on to find out how you can handle your business successfully and professionally in the New Year… A new year is a good time to reflect on your business’s performance over the past year and devise a plan for further development. For some businesspeople, increasing awareness could be an important issue, while others may concentrate on providing innovative products and services. But whatever your ultimate goal may be, you can inculcate the following basic and fool-proof resolutions in your work-life - you’ll be helping your business in more ways than one: 1. Learn To Delegate: Just because you own a business doesn’t mean you have to do everything! There’s a reason why you pay your employees; so learn to delegate authority and responsibility. This will not only take the work load off your shoulders, but the end result will also be fresh, well-researched, and highly effective. Think about it, managing all the tasks will definitely have a bearing on the quality of your work because a person can only handle so much. So this year, delegate as much as you can. 2. Promote Your Business: Promoting a small business often takes a back seat while the other more urgent tasks

28

MAY 2014

become the priority. But, how can you attract new customers and spread the word if you don’t market your business? That’s why you should consider hiring a marketing expert, or devise and execute your own marketing strategy. You need to tell your target market who you are and why you’re better than your competition. This will help attract new customers and retain existing ones.

outside the business will help you take your mind off work and add a new dimension of interest to your personal life. While learning, you may come across new and interesting people who could become your future customers, colleagues, or even friends. Yes, it’s true that this requires a considerable amount of time, but don’t worry, you’ll have plenty of free time once you start delegating.

3. Plan Every Week: We all know the importance of planning in making a business work. In fact, it alone directs the business and provides the framework for conducting activities. Because a business’s success depends greatly on the quality of a plan, try setting weekly plans instead of yearly or quarterly ones. This will help you weed out unsuccessful practices and you can replace them with the ones that work. Following a weekly agenda will also assist in cutting unnecessary costs and staying on track.

5. Start Networking: Meeting other businesspeople helps because you get an experienced outside perspective. They can help you come up with fresh, new ideas, refine existing ones, and do away with obsolete and unprofitable practices. A good network also helps you build a strong contacts base, which is vital for a business’s growth and development. So whether it’s a group specifically designed for networking, or an organization dedicated to a particular type of business, making the effort to be a part of such groups will benefit both you and your business.

4. Keep Learning: You don’t necessarily have to learn about business related matters, but anything that keeps you challenged and interested is good. Of course, business learning will add to your skills and knowledge, but learning

6. Give Back: You should always strive to give back to your community. Not only will you have a crystal clear conscience, but your business will be recognised for its social endeavours. You could

associate the company’s name with public awareness campaigns, charity drives, or even make donations to deserving charity trusts. It’s always a good idea to pick a cause that matters to you, because then it won’t seem like a burden. So think hard and deep about how you would like to change your community and make a difference today. 7. Indulge In ‘Me’ Time: Taking some time out for pampering yourself is vital because it refreshes and rejuvenates your body, mind, and soul. If you’re drowning in work and hardly taking any breaks, you’re headed for disaster. So take some time out from your busy life and give your body the break it truly deserves. If it helps, set an appointment with yourself in your schedule and stick to it,

because it’s just as important as meeting with a client. 8. Set Realistic Goals: Setting goals is a valuable habit, but only if the goals lead to success. You should set goals that are achievable and realistic, rather than unrealistic and far fetched dreams that lead to frustration and depression. Realistic goal setting comes with experience, but you can also learn this art by doing your homework. Do as much research as you can and ask other experienced players to help you out. 9. Embrace Changes: Sometimes, certain elements in a workplace hinder overall performance and cause irreparable damage. Whether it’s an old computer that keeps crashing, or the need to fire an unproductive employee,

make a New Year’s resolution to stop ignoring unproductive elements. You cannot expect your business to flourish if you don’t invest in it, so start picking up the pieces today, incorporate valuable changes, and give your business all the support and resources it needs. 10. Move On: Let’s face it, not all products are best sellers, not all sales methods work, and no two suppliers are the same. If you find something alarming about a technique, product, or business relationship, drop it and move on to the next one. You will not get anything by investing your time and energy into something that just doesn’t suit your business. And don’t think about how much you’ve already invested, because it won’t be more than what you’re going to lose.

Leadership Laws

It’s believed that a person’s leadership core is nurtured and grown out of the shaping experiences he encounters and pursues throughout his life, explains Stephen H. Baum…

These days, no one becomes an effective boss by pulling a sword from a stone; great leadership happens through hard work and determination. To paraphrase the legendary Gordon Bethune, former chairman and CEO of Continental Airlines, no one thing makes a leader great. Mixing some flour, milk, and eggs in a bowl doesn’t mean you have a great cake; what you do with those ingredients will determine whether it turns out good or bad. Thus, to become an influential leader, you must learn from your past experiences and use them as guiding principles. These ten essential moments with quotes from successful leaders are responsible for developing leadership traits and providing the

30

MAY 2014

knowledge and skills crucial for operating effectively: 1. Swim In Water Over Your Head Take a calculated personal risk without specific knowledge of how to succeed. This way you’ll learn how to manage difficult situations without panicking. And never let people put you down, even if the whole world says you can’t do something, believe that you can. “I believe that I was lucky to have suffered. Some people don’t realize that in suffering there is great potential, because if you are deprived for any reason, you will find that the only way to survive is for you to excel.” Talal Abu-Ghazaleh, TAGorg Chairman and Founder.

2. Make The Tough Choice Choose group benefit over personal interest, or choose between two rights. Letting your personal feelings get in the way is never a good idea; you may win personally, but you’ll lose professionally. So learn to take a stand and stick by it, even if it hurts someone else’s feelings. “Hiring people is an art, not a science, and resumes can’t tell you whether someone will fit into a company’s culture. When you realize you’ve made a mistake, you need to cut your losses and move on.” Howard Schultz, Entrepreneur and Starbucks Chairman. 3. Solve The Key Puzzle Even if it’s not your job,

figure out the root of the problem or opportunity. This will broaden your experience and your deed will not go unnoticed; your superiors will appreciate the initiative and consider you a valuable asset. This is how you can start climbing up the ladder. “Everyone experiences tough times, it is a measure of your determination and dedication how you deal with them and how you can come through them.” Lakshmi Mittal, Mittal Steel Co. Chairman. 4. Parent At Work Help others grow and perform exceptionally. If you’re empathetic and compassionate towards your subordinates, they will want to do well for you. This will motivate them and they will take initiative in coming up with new ideas. But if you’re aristocratic in your approach, you will only be making enemies. “When employees and employers, even co-workers, have a commitment to one another, everyone benefits. I have people who have been in business with me for decades. I know that they’ll always be dedicated to what we’re trying to accomplish.” Donald Trump, Business Tycoon. 5. Get Others To Buy In Win hearts and minds to create followers. When you’re passionate about your idea, others believe in it too. Don’t second guess yourself and be confident, this is how

you can get others to trust your judgement and support you. “You have to pretend you’re 100 percent sure. You have to take action; you can’t hesitate or hedge your bets. Anything less will condemn your efforts to failure.” Andrew Grove, Founder of Intel Corp. 6. Connect With Others Understand what motivates others, and speak their language. Enlist them as much by your deeds as by your words. If your subordinates consider you to be one of them, they’ll be much more relaxed and the work will get done faster. “You never really hear the truth from your subordinates until after ten in the evening.” Jurgen Schrempp, DaimlerChrysler former CEO. 7. Build A Team Gather and lead a group in a common endeavour and succeed, or fail at first and try again. Get average players to play like stars and add new members to weed out underperformers. Set directions and change them, but make sure your team sticks together no matter what. “To succeed as a team is to hold all of the members accountable for their expertise.” Mitchell Caplan, E*Trade Group Inc. CEO. 8. Get Good On Your Feet Learn to communicate, and

project your authenticity in real-time. You’re headed for disaster if you can’t communicate effectively with your team. Their efficiency will improve immensely if they comprehend what you require from them, so be clear in what you demand. “If words of command are not clear and distinct, if orders are not thoroughly understood, the general is to blame.” Sun Tzu. 9. Develop Your Crap Detector Practice your intuitive ability to read subtexts of conversations and to detect individuals whose words and behaviours are not what they pretend them to be. You have to learn how to identify the sour grapes because they’re the ones responsible for poor productivity. “Executives owe it to the organization and to their fellow workers not to tolerate nonperforming individuals in important jobs.” Peter Drucker, Business strategist and author. 10. Look In The Mirror Assess your own values, beliefs, and behaviours critically. Take any criticism that comes your way positively and learn from it. Nobody is perfect, but you can try to perfect yourself by working on your flaws. “Sandwich every bit of criticism between two thick layers of praise.” Mary Kay Ash, Founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics.

Too Much Of A Good Thing In global trade, too much of a good thing can be a bad thing; a multitude of trade products is good for a country - up to a point…

The researchers discovered that interaction between products plays an important role in economic growth. In the early stages of product development, these synergies allow for a quick growth rate. Specialization in a certain area, such as electronics, establishes the base for similar products to be developed and exported.

episode in 1985, and from our data we can examine Ireland’s country-level product specialization before and after the growth acceleration period,” he said. Ireland experienced increases in its chemical industry, manufactured goods, machinery and transportation and commercial manufacturing, all of which overlapped with food and animal production and crude materials. The researchers believe the inter-related nature of these industries played a key role in Ireland developing new products and expanding its export base.

Raja Kali and Javier Reyes, Associate Professors in the Sam M. Walton College of Business; Josh McGee, VP of Public Accountability at the Laura and John Arnold Foundation and Walton College doctoral graduate of economics; and Stuart Shirrell, a former Bodenhamer Fellow and 2011 magna cum laude graduate of the U of A, performed the study.

A contrasting example is Greece, which had a high level of interaction within the manufactured goods industry, did not expand this interaction into other high-density industries. As a result, over the ten-year period studied, 1980-1990, the country experienced a relative decrease in synergies between its export products. While interrelatedness between products can help a country expand its economy, it can also cause an adverse effect, the researchers found. “Essentially, one could say that too much of a good thing makes you fat and happy, and that ultimately is not so good for a country,” Kali said.

Kali and his colleagues use Ireland as an example of this growth pattern. “We know that Ireland experienced a trade and economic growth acceleration

The researchers developed a way of measuring density at the product and country level. Product density is the number of links between a single product

32

MAY 2014

and the other products in a country’s export set, divided by the total number of links between that product and every other product, regardless of whether it is in the country’s product set or not. Country density is computed by weighting the density of each product that a country exports. As density increases, “inertia” becomes stronger, making the jump to new products more difficult. An increase in network proximity more proportionate than product density is required to maintain growth acceleration. The researchers defined product space as the relatedness between products in global trade. This space can be thought of as a network in which each product represents a node, and the relationships between them represent the linkages. In their study, each country’s network was superimposed on the country’s specialization pattern. The information allowed the researchers to measure the density of the links and to develop a measure of the proximity of the country’s specialization to the products themselves. The proximity of the products indicated how easily a country could move from its current specialization to new products. The researchers’ study was published in the Journal of Development Economics. The study is available online at www.Sciencedirect.com.

In today’s dynamic global economic environment, companies or countries consider everything when it comes to expanding their economies. Researchers at the University of Arkansas examined the relationship between products in global trade and the characteristics of a country’s product specialization pattern and discovered that having a multitude of similar products can be beneficial to growth - up to a point, after which the benefit declines.

Breast Cancer: Myths Versus Facts Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women, but how many of us actually know what this disease is all about? There are several misconceptions about breast cancer, and most of us tend to follow them blindly without doing our research. These eight myths may make all the sense in the world, but the actual truth is far from what they claim… Myth # 1: Being Diagnosed With Breast Cancer Means Losing A Breast Truth: Not all breast cancer patients lose their breast. Women who’re diagnosed with early stage cancer usually undergo lumpectomy and radiation therapy, which are effective breast-conserving therapies. Dr. Ayra Bakr, a cancer specialist in Dubai, explains, “Lumpectomy surgically removes the lump and the surrounding margin of normal breast tissue, while radiation therapy destroys all cancer cells that may stick around after surgery.” Chemotherapy (the use of anticancer drugs) is also popularly used to shrink the size of the tumour so that women can have lumpectomy instead of mastectomy (removal of the affected breast). Myth # 2: All Breast Lumps Are Cancerous Truth: Most breast lumps are not cancerous; they could be cysts or a benign condition called fibroadenoma. Dr. Bakr states that 80% of lumps are non-cancerous, and this percentage tends to “fluctuate with age.” In young women, more than 80% of breast

34

MAY 2014

lumps are benign, and this percentage keeps decreasing as they become older. “But don’t let these facts lull you into complacency,” she warns. “You should report any breast abnormality to your physician, especially if it persists after two or more menstrual cycles.” Myth # 3: Only Women Get Breast Cancer Truth: Breast cancer isn’t just a women’s disease – men can get it too. “Many people don’t realise that men also have breast tissue that can develop a cancerous condition,” comments Dr. Bakr. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2009, about 1,910 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among men in the United States alone, and close to 440 men will die from the disease. Male breast cancer is most common between the ages of 60 and 70. Myth # 4: Only Women With Family History Get Breast Cancer Truth: Close to 90% of women who get breast cancer have no family history of the disease. “But if you do have a family history, your

chances of developing the disease are increased,” adds Dr. Bakr. “You should get screening mammograms earlier than other women, and you should ask your doctor to test if you have inherited BRCA1, BRCA2, and P53 genes. Inheriting these genes increases your risk of getting the cancer by 80-85%.” Myth # 5: Small-Breasted Women Don’t Get Breast Cancer Truth: Your breast size doesn’t increase or decrease your chances of developing the disease. Dr. Bakr explains, “The place where breast cancer starts is in the ducts that normally carry milk when women are pregnant and lactating, and every woman has the same number of ducts. Thus, women with small breasts have the same risk of getting breast cancer as women with larger breasts.” Myth # 6: All Nipple Discharges Indicate Breast Cancer Truth: Most nipple discharges do not indicate breast cancer. Dr. Bakr says that clear, milky, yellow, and green discharges are normal, while bloody

or watery discharges are abnormal. “However, only 10% of abnormal discharges are cancerous,” she adds. “Most bloody discharges are caused by a benign condition known as papilloma.” A papilloma is a non-cancerous, wartlike tumour with a stalk that has grown inside the breast duct. “But whether you have a normal or an abnormal discharge, you should report it to your doctor and demand a clinical examination.” Myth # 7: Breast Cancer Doesn’t Return After Being Removed Truth: Unfortunately, the risk of breast cancer’s return never goes away completely. According to Dr. Bakr, it’s more likely to return within the first five to ten years. “About 75% of women who report a recurrence get it within six years, and 25% develop it ten years later,” she says. Signs of recurrence include skin changes, such as reddening, swelling, or puckering, a lump or thickening in the breast tissue, scar tissue, or under your arm, and redness or scaling in the nipples. Myth # 8: Breast Cancer Always Takes The Form Of A Lump Truth: Most women who’re diagnosed with breast cancer do not have a noticeable lump. “There are several other signs women should look out for apart from a lump while performing self-examinations,” comments Dr. Bakr. “Some of the most important warning signs include a hard knot in the underarm, a thickening in the breast that doesn’t shrink or lessen after your next period, any change in the size, symmetry, or shape of the breast, any dimpling, puckering, or indention in the breast, and nipple tenderness or pain.”

Health Dilemmas - November 2013 I’m pregnant and my doctor says that what I eat is very important to the health of my baby but I don’t really believe that; is it true? Rawya, Jeddah Studies show that what a woman eats just before and during pregnancy will impact the health of her child for the rest of his or her life. It’s an area of research called foetal programming. The concept of foetal programming (also called prenatal programming) theorizes that during foetal development, poor intake of one or more essential nutrients during critical periods in an organ’s growth can potentially alter or program the structure, size, or function of that organ for the rest of the child’s life. The developing baby will attempt to compensate for deficiencies in the womb, but that compensation can carry a price later in life.

Ask Nisrine

Eighty-eight percent of mothers and women who are currently pregnant agree that a diet including nutritious foods, beverages, and vitamins will have a positive longterm effect on their child’s health, according to a recent survey conducted by NMI Research and DSM Nutritional Products. However, despite this awareness, 99 out of 100 Americans don’t meet even the minimum standards of a balanced diet. “Many pregnant women think they’re doing OK diet-wise, but in reality they are likely not getting the essential vitamins and nutrients that they and their babies need through diet alone. For instance, the average woman eats four servings or less of fruits and vegetables daily, which means they may be lacking essential nutrients like vitamins A, C, E, and K,” says Elizabeth Somer, registered dietician and author of “Nutrition for a Healthy Pregnancy.” Today, women who are pregnant have the option to supplement their diets with prenatal vitamins, minerals and other essential nutrients. Somer provides nutrition tips for mothers to help support their child’s future health.

Tip No. 1: A mother’s diet rich in vitamin B12 has been found to correlate to a lower risk for insulin resistance in her child later in life, according to the Prune Maternal Nutrition Study. Vitamin B12 is essential for the formation of blood cells, nerve sheaths, and various proteins, and is also necessary for growth. Sources of B12 include meat, eggs, fish, and milk products.

Tip No. 4: DHA omega-3 is an important building block of a baby’s brain. In fact, 97% of the omega-3s found in the brain is DHA. Primary sources of DHA include fatty fish (tuna, mackerel, salmon) and a vegetarian and sustainable source of DHA from algae can be found in foods, beverages, and supplements on store shelves. Look for the life’sDHA logo on the packaging to know you’re getting a vegetarian source. Tip No. 5: Children born of mothers with low folate status during pregnancy were 57% more likely to have emotional problems later in life, according to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Increase your folate or folic acid intake by eating dark leafy greens or supplementing with 600 to 800 micrograms of folic acid daily. It’s important to talk with your doctor before starting any supplement program. 36

Tip No. 3: There is emerging evidence that vitamin D deficiency may be a risk factor for many chronic diseases including rickets, multiple sclerosis, heart disease, type 1 diabetes, and cancer, according to a study published in the Journal of Midwifery & Women’s Health. You can find a multiple vitamin and mineral supplement that includes vitamin D and is formulated for the needs of women who are pregnant.

Beauty Tips For BridesTo-Be Expert skincare tips for glowing skin on your wedding day…

“On your wedding day, smooth, glowing skin is an absolute must. Good skincare is an internal and external process,” says Veronica Barton-Schwartz, a leading expert in skincare with more than 30 years of experience. Barton-Schwartz founded the Skin and Body Care Centre in California, USA, where she uses her extensive

knowledge to help clients look and feel their best. Whether she’s prepping a celebrity for the red carpet or a bride before her big day, she helps clients get smooth, healthy skin that truly glows. Here are her top skincare tips for brides-to-be: 1. Start Three Months Ahead Of The Big Day “Start prepping skin at least three months in advance. That will give you enough time to ensure that your skin is clear, smooth, and glowing for your special day,” says BartonSchwartz. She recommends finding a qualified aesthetician to help you choose the right treatments, but here are some general guidelines based on age: 20s: “When brides are in their 20s, they most likely are facing

acne and some discoloration from sun damage. Deepcleaning facials are a must to prep the skin at this age,” say Barton-Schwartz. 30s up: “In your 30s and 40s, the skin needs exfoliating regularly because it only exfoliates naturally every 35 days as opposed to every 14 days in your 20s. This is the time to start using retinoid to help improve the overall texture and tone of your skin,” she says. 40s and 50s: “In your 40s, your oestrogen levels are tapering so your skin will be drier. You’ll have to add collagen-building peptides morning and night to your skincare regimen. In your 50s, you’ll notice loss of elasticity and you will need stronger antioxidant treatments

The ideal dress, the perfect menu, the heartfelt vows - to these add another necessity of your dream wedding: gorgeous, glowing skin. Throughout your entire wedding - from the moment you start walking down the aisle to when you exchange vows to your first dance as man and wife - the focus is on your face. Beautiful skin is essential, and with some expert tips, achieving it doesn’t have to be difficult.

and moisturizers. The older you get the more important it is to use a good serum under your moisturizer to help combat dry skin and loss of elasticity,” she explains. 2. Eat Foods And Beverages That Nourish Skin When it comes to healthy skin, it’s not only how you treat it externally, but internally as well. Barton-Schwartz says it’s wise to eliminate all sugar and white flour while increasing some skincare superstar foods. “Increase consumption of fresh fruits, vegetables, and lean protein,” suggests BartonSchwartz. “Add more essential oils and healthy fats like salmon and sardines to lubricate dermis layers. Drink more water. Water is absolutely vital for every process in the body and especially for your skin.”

3. Consider Supplements That Benefit The Skin Supplements can greatly benefit skin health from the inside, out. In addition to a good multi-vitamin, BartonSchwartz suggests considering alpha lipoic acid that assists metabolism, DMAE to improve muscle tone under skin, CoQ10 that increases metabolic efficiency and improves heart health, and omega-3s (found in fish oil) for heart, eyes, brain, skin, and overall body health. “The research of the benefits of fish oil is growing every day and I believe my good health and skin is partly due to the fact that I’ve been taking Nordic Naturals since I was in my 40s,” she says. “Now I’m 65 and I still have youthful skin.” For more information about Nordic Naturals omega-3 fish oil supplements, visit www.

nordicnaturals.com. 4. Don’t Forget Last Minute To-Do’s For The Big Day When the big day comes, you’re likely to feel a mix of emotions: excitement, anxiety, etc. Some important day-of skincare tips can help you stay calm and look your best: “Eat some protein in the morning and take a walk to boost circulation and lymphatic drainage. Use your Veronica Peptides to help with any puffiness and dark circles under your eyes,” suggests Barton-Schwartz. “For your complexion, use a sheer, satinmatte foundation, medium coverage concealer for trouble spots, a light dusting of pressed powder, and a powder blush. Keep your makeup natural. Wear waterproof mascara, just in case.”

Dr. Pierre Nicolau on Injectable Fillers

Dazzle caught up with Dr. Pierre Nicolau, Consultant Plastic Surgeon at University Hospital Saint Louis, Paris, to get the lowdown on fillers and cosmetic procedures… Kalium Group of Companies, the regional distributor of advanced medical equipment, aesthetic devices, and skin care products, is showcasing its entire range of aesthetic and anti-aging skin solutions at the annually held Jeddah Dermatology & Cosmetics Conference taking place in Jeddah, KSA, on March 3-6, 2014.

When should fillers be used; is there an age specific time to start? There is no specific age to start. They can be used as prevention of skin aging as soon as folds or rhytids appear.

Among its doctors speaking at the conference is Dr. Pierre Nicolau, Consultant Plastic Surgeon at University Hospital Saint Louis, Paris, who will focus on the biological effects of injectable fillers. Dazzle caught up with Dr. Nicolau to get the lowdown on fillers and cosmetic procedures:

How are they like or different from Botox? Botulinum toxin is not a product to fill the skin, but to treat the cause of rhytids and creases. It will relax the muscles responsible for rhytids of the forehead, crows feet, and glabella (in the midline between the eyelids). It can also be used in other facial areas, where some muscles might be too strong and responsible for folds or creases like in upper lips, chin, or to lift the corners of the mouth. Its effects will last about five to six months.

Dazzle: What are injectable fillers? Dr. Nicolau: As their name indicates, they are products fluid enough to be injected in the skin or the deepest tissues, to compensate for aging changes. What applications can injectable fillers be used for? They are used mainly in the face, in deep injections at the bone level, to lift up the anatomical structures of the face to replace bone losses occurring with aging, or in the superficial layers of the skin to replace missing fat to fill superficial hollows and deep folds, or to rejuvenate the skin through newly formed collagen for treating fine rhytids [skin wrinkles]. We have a range 40

Are fillers effective in or as facelifts? Fillers do not have a “lifting” effect as surgery does. They will re-establish the losses of volume and will help recuperate the appearance of youth. But, the human face is not a balloon to be inflated, and precise anatomy has to be respected. How effective are fillers in rhinoplasty (nose restructuring or adjustment)?

What, if any, side effects are there from using fillers? Some side effects are due to the injection itself, like some pain, small bruises, and swelling. But all these can be prevented, avoiding aspirin and anti-inflammatory drugs, and telling your doctors about all the medications or treatments you might have. This is very important as no medical procedure, including for cosmetic purposes, is free of eventual side effects. Some complications could occur in the future post-procedure, like nodules or inflammatory secondary reactions, but not only are they very rare (less than one case per 1,000 injections), but the products responsible for these complications, like acrylic gels or permanent fillers, are less and less used nowadays. We read that the filler can sometimes be seen under the skin as tiny bumps; how likely is that to happen? The more superficial in the skin an injection is, the more risks

cold packs, or an infusion of local anaesthetic products.

there are to have an adverse reaction as the body will tend to protect itself from what could be recognised as a foreign body. Therefore, only very fluid products should be used in the superficial layers, like lowviscosity light-reticulation Hyaluronic acids or diluted bio stimulators like Ellansé. In the deeper planes, large volumes in any one zone have to be avoided. Better to inject

several small amounts. What’s the recovery time after getting fillers injected? Usually, swelling will subside within a few hours. Sometimes, if there are more marked bruises, they might last for a few days but will be easily dissimulated with make up. In any case, specific treatments can be prescribed. Does the procedure hurt? Any injection using a needle can be somewhat unpleasant, although true pain is extremely rare, and depends on each person’s tolerance. However, pain or discomfort is prevented using anaesthesia with creams,

When is it not advisable to use fillers? Filler use is contraindicated in the case of autoimmune diseases as this might trigger adverse reactions, including an upsurge of the disease itself. Locally, one should not be injected in case of acute Herpes or bacterial skin infection, or if you are under anti-coagulant or anti-inflammatory medications as this would increase the risk of bleeding and bruising. What is the price range of using fillers? It all depends on the type of filler used. Hyaluronic acids of short duration (six to eight months) will be relatively cheap. Biostimulators like Ellansé will be more expensive, but their effect will last for a much longer time as the newly formed collagen will persist for many years. www.dazzle-magazine.com

Beauty Dilemmas - December 2013 What’s the best way to care for my nails? Shafe’a, Riyadh

Having beautiful nails is less a matter of luck and more a matter of caring for them correctly. Fortunately, there are simple steps people can take to properly care for their nails. “Nails need to be moisturized, especially after removing nail polish, so be sure to apply a cream regularly,” said board-certified dermatologist Phoebe Rich, MD, FAAD, Clinical Adjunct Professor of Dermatology at Oregon Health Science University, Portland. “Always protect your cuticles. Never cut or forcefully push back your cuticles as doing so could lead to an infection. If you must push them back, only do so gently after a shower or bath.” Dr. Rich shares more top manicure and pedicure tips:

Ask Sonja

1. While most nail salons follow strict cleanliness and disinfection guidelines, look for the following when visiting a salon: Does your nail technician have the necessary experience and/or license, if required? Are the stations clean? Does the nail technician wash her hands between clients? Are there dirty tools lying around? In addition, don’t hesitate to ask how they clean their tools. 2. Shave your lower legs after getting a pedicure, not before. That means not shaving your lower legs for at least 24 hours before you get a pedicure. If you nick yourself while shaving, a pedicure could put you at risk for an infection. 3. If you get frequent manicures and pedicures, consider purchasing your own tools to be used at the salon.

Confused about makeup? Having a problem making the most of your features? What products to use? Ask Sonja to solve your problems!

4. In addition, check that the pedicure footbaths and filters are thoroughly disinfected before you use them. If they are improperly cleaned, they can harbour bacteria and fungus. If the salon does not appear clean, then choose another one.

“If you wear artificial nails, know what products are used as the substances can cause an allergic reaction in some people,” said Dr. Rich. “If you develop a rash or other reaction, this information will be important to your doctor. If you have any questions or concerns about caring for your nails, make an appointment to see a board-certified dermatologist.” These steps are demonstrated in ‘Manicure and Pedicure Safety’, a video posted to the Academy’s website and the Academy’s YouTube channel. This video is part of the Dermatology A to Z: Video Series, which offers relatable videos that demonstrate tips people can use to properly care for their skin, hair and nails. A new video in the series posts to the Academy’s website and the YouTube channel each month. Visit www.aad.org, or on Facebook at ‘American Academy of Dermatology’, or Twitter @AADskin.

7. Don’t wear artificial nails to cover up nail problems as they may make them worse. Artificial nails aren’t recommended for people who are prone to fungal infections or have brittle nails. For people with healthy nails, artificial nails can be fine as long as they’re not worn continuously.

sonja@dazzle-magazine.com

6. While some people beg to differ, there’s no scientific evidence that immersing nails in gelatine makes them stronger. Polishes that contain strengthening ingredients increase nail stiffness, which may make nails break more frequently.

Answer source: American Academy of Dermatology/Newswise.

5. If you want to wear a bright red or orange polish, prevent discoloration by applying an extra layer of base coat. If your nails become yellowed and discoloured from the polish, your nails should return to normal colour over several weeks if the same colour is not reapplied.

Back-To-School Tech Back-to-school tech trends that keep kids in touch… Chances are your young kids love to play games on their tablets or even your smartphone, and your teens and college students rely on technology to stay in touch with friends. But as they head back to school, keep in mind technology can also help students discover the joy of learning and keep them on track with their schoolwork. “Technology is a natural part of learning for kids today,” says Conor Kearney, VP of

computing for office supply giant Staples. “And where once teachers might have viewed technology in the classroom as a distraction, today they are finding ways to integrate it into lessons - and helping students connect with material through the technology they already love.” As your children head back to school, here are a handful of tech trends that can help make the school year more productive and fun:

Chromebooks put the shine on learning - Chromebooks are easy-to-use, lightweight laptops that run the popular Google operating system. Their portability and ease of use make them perfect for youngsters just learning how to use technology in the classroom. Samsung, HP, and Acer all offer Chromebooks, and you can find them online at Staples.com. And talking about tablets, Smaller, lighter weight, and

powerful, tablets are a great alternative to full-sized laptops, fitting easily into backpacks and totes. Tablets such as the Microsoft Surface, Google Nexus, Samsung Galaxy, Samsung Note 8.0, and Kindle Fire HD help students stay connected online and in and out of the classroom. There’s an app for that - No conversation about technology is complete without the right software to complement your hardware. Learning apps abound, so start out by consulting with your child’s teacher to see if he or she will be working with students using a specific app or website this year. Then head over to pcmag.com for reviews and information on the best learning apps for children. Accessories make the tech. Although technology is becoming more durable every year, most kids can still

use some help keeping their tech tools in good shape. Jansport sleeves combine fashion and function in a wide assortment of tablet sleeves and laptop cases. Kids can choose from animal prints to plaids and even neon accents. For those who want to combine the roominess of a backpack with the protection of a laptop case, the Jansport Superbreak Sleeve is a durable and fashionable option. Free university learning - Parents who purchase a qualified touchscreen laptop from Staples can also enrol their college-age students in Microsoft Office 365 University for free. The program (usually sold for $79.99) provides students with four years of Word, Excel, Powerpoint, OneNote, and Outlook for free. To be eligible, purchasers must show valid college/university identification or an original acceptance letter to a post-secondary school along with their photo ID.

Making it all easy - Wireless networking, cloud backup, data protection - it can all get pretty confusing for a parent. Fortunately, Staples EasyTech associates have the expertise and answers to help. They offer a variety of tech services for just $99 each, including setting up your student’s PC, getting your data

Interiors - January 2014

Wide Open Spaces Believe us when we say less is more! The days of filling every possible space in a room are long gone. So, let your home shine bright, minus excess furniture! Creating wide, open spaces in your home makes it look chic, peaceful, and charming and you can achieve this look by doing away with gaudy furniture that overshadows a home’s true character. We’re not saying that you should get rid of all your furniture and live in a completely empty space; the key is to select the right kind of furniture that accentuates your home’s personality and adds a touch of sophistication to it. Excess furniture is also guilty of making your home look smaller than it actually is; because there’s so much clutter in the rooms with few open spaces, the house ends up looking like a storage unit! But, we’re here to tell you what you can do to break the clutter cycle and create a spacious haven. We’re only going to say this once: let there be light! We live in a region where the sun loves to shine, so make the most of it by allowing your home to be more accessible to sunlight. Always leave your curtains open during the day, this will make your home bright,

lively, and perfectly sunkissed. To create a sense of openness in your living room, incorporate white into your furniture and walls. It’s not necessary to go white all over; if you have dark walls, adding just one white wall will do the trick. The same goes with furniture, adding a white sofa or centre table in a dominant wooden setting not only gives the illusion of added space, but also looks very elegant. Remember to keep the décor as simple as possible and stick to the basics; don’t keep adding sofas and cabinets because you have

the extra space, everything you choose must have a purpose. To make your dining room more spacious, avoid exaggerated table decorations and choose a simple style. After all, if there’s one place

in the house that needs to be comfortable, it’s the dining area. Decorate the table with stylish candles on a colourful table runner; these will add life to the area and make it look charming. To create a balanced look, match the colour of the chairs with the walls; this small detail will make the style more dominant. And, we all know that a dining area is incomplete without a chandelier, so add a chandelier that is beautiful and functional: the key to a great interior style is choosing beautiful complimentary elements that are functional. If you feel you have too many open spaces, cover

them up with plants as opposed to more furniture. Plants add personality and zest to a house; from living rooms to bedrooms, they look good anywhere. Instead of putting bedside tables in your bedrooms, go with plants because its something unique and

Make sure that all your unwanted and old items are nicely packed away in a storage room. It’s awful when you have to accommodate such things in your rooms because of lack of space. Keeping them away in a storage room will ensure that your home has enough space to breathe and look good too. And the next time you think about splurging money on overthe-top furniture, do your home a favour and drop the idea!

One Direction’s

Find out what the One Direction boys miss when they are away from home with VisitBritain’s guide to following in their footsteps in London and in the UK… 1. On 23 July 2010, One Direction were put together as a band for the first time at Wembley Arena, where they qualified for the ‘groups’ category of the X Factor. It’s where their phenomenal journey began, so the famous music venue holds a special place in the boy’s hearts and is a must-visit for any music fan: artists from The Beatles and Bob Dylan to the Spice Girls and Madonna have performed there. Catch the X Factor Live at Wembley to talent-spot the next hot act. 2. Zayn Malik comes from Bradford, home to the nations favourite dish: curry. Visit the best curry houses in Zayn’s home city like the International Tandoori Restaurant in The West End or Akbar’s Balti Restaurant on Leeds Road. 3. Zayn is dating Perrie Edwards from Brit girl group Little Mix. The couple were recently spotted in Perrie’s home city of Newcastle, one of Britain’s hotspots for clubbing by night and shopping

by day. With over 200 pubs and some of the best clubs in the country, the pair can dance till dawn, but not before they shop till they drop at Europe’s biggest indoor mall the Metrocentre in Gateshead or maybe more refined Jesmond, known as the ‘Notting Hill of the North’, with lots of cute one-off boutiques and cafes. 4. Harry Styles grew up listening to the music of The Beatles, introduced to him by his father. No doubt Harry will have explored Beatles Britain to find out about another British band that shot to stardom and invaded the worldwide music scene. The best place to head to is Liverpool, the Fab Four’s home city where you can catch a gig at The Cavern Club where today’s upcoming bands often play, or else make your way to Abbey Road in London and recreate their famous street crossing. 5. Wanna party like the 1D boys? The group have been seen out and about at London’s Mahiki,

Aura, and Funky Buddha. Although they’ve dined at hot new Soho Mexican La Bodega Negra, the boys are just as happy at Nando’s or can be spotted having a sneaky ice-cream fix at Milkshake City where they’ve even got their own flavour! 6. Before he auditioned for X Factor, Louis Tomlinson performed as Danny Zuko in Grease at school and says it gave him the confidence to try out for the programme. London’s West End has great shows for music fans like We Will Rock You based on the band Queen and Viva Forever - the new musical about the Spice Girls. How long until One Direction’s story is taken to the stage? 7. Harry Styles bought a house in London’s Primrose Hill earlier this year, joining other celebrities like supermodel Kate Moss (who favours local cupcake shop the Primrose Bakery) and celebrity chef Jamie Oliver in the tranquil North London neighbourhood. It’s

not hard to see why - the hill itself is in the capital’s beautiful Regent’s Park, with edgy Camden to the east for a live music fix, plenty of cute neighbourhood restaurants and pubs to visit as well as the ZSL London Zoo right in the park - the perfect spot for Harry to take a first date! 8. Before he was famous, Liam Payne gave a live performance at a Wolverhampton Wanderers game to an audience of 26,000; when the group was asked to perform at the London 2012 Olympic closing ceremony it was to a somewhat bigger crowd! Dazztrology May 2014

Aries March 21 - April 20 As the negative battles begin to fizzle out, you’re faced with big financial decisions. You could be trying to decide if you should collect a regular salary or an irregular commission. Either way, both forms have their good days this month. Regular salaries will probably edge out and win. You’re also in the mood for hanging out with local people and you find some great opportunities for bargain hunting and business dealings. You’re finally able to get your point across after months of trying. Taurus April 21 - May 21 There are still plenty of problems to be dealt with, but the good news is that the faster moving planets are beginning to move through your chart area that promotes personal wealth and selfworth. This is not the time for loaning money to friends or engaging in group or internet-based financial transactions, but job related earnings should be strong. If you have a new non-social/ non-internet financial project or goal that you’ve wanted to launch, do so during the final days of this month. Gemini May 22 - June 21 You’ve spent a lot of time in recent months thinking about what others think and what they want from you. You’ve also been contemplating what you want, what brings you happiness, and what creates peace of mind. You’re ready to make some changes in your life starting with yourself. Some people will love it and others will hate it or fight it. It’s up to you how much you want to create balance between your authentic real self and your public persona; you decide what works best at this time. Cancer June 22 - July 23 So much of the drama of the last few months has already begun to drop away. You are ready for a more compassionate, spiritual, intuitive, and forgiving attitude, but you are butting heads with your own or someone else’s beliefs about cultural, religious, legal, political, and/or academia. You will make the first start towards compassion anyway, because it is in your best interest and it just feels right. Leo July 24 - August 23 As most of the recent professional dramas are fading away, you’re able to take on more leadership roles, network with colleagues, and sell your ideas to various groups of people. You’re finally being heard and can take advantage of the situation. Your social life is also beginning to see more action. It’s a good time for reconnecting with old friends that you may have been ignoring while working too much or you could be making new friends that help you to shake off the old negative outlook. Virgo August 24 - September 23 Much of the drama of the last couple of months is fading away and you’re finally able to focus on the things that matter. Your career and finances are benefitting from all of your hard work and effort. You have some excellent social energy happening within your local community that allows you to have some fun and mingle with good friends. You seem to have found a nice balance between work and social activities this month.

MAY 2014

By Skye Thomas Tomorrow’s Edge

Libra September 24 - October 23

Most of the drama from the last few months has fizzled out and that leaves you with even more time to focus on professional and financial goals and achievements. You’re ready to go on vacation, relocate to another city, begin attending college classes, or in some other way to broaden your horizons and open your mind to new ways of thinking. Your job is not making this new “journey” easy for you, but you have some intensely strong motivators encouraging you to go for it. Scorpio October 24 - November 22 Unfortunately, this month, you’re dealing with suspicions. I can’t tell you if they’re cheating or not; you could simply be seeing trouble where none exists. Normally, I’d tell you to follow your instincts, but this time, you have wait until you have facts. The good news is that during the final days of the month, you get to launch a new relationship, agreement, or project involving finances and/or your love life. Maybe the two of you argue about trust issues and then agree to a fresh start between you. Sagittarius November 23 - December 21 You have some mild work related stress during the first half of the month, but you’re able to work towards achieving your financial and professional goals, so you don’t mind too much. During the second half of the month, you start focusing on a romantic, social, or professional partnership. Eventually, the two of you launch a new project together or create a new partnership. Either way, you seem pretty pleased with the situation. Capricorn December 22 - January 20 The month starts out really rough. Just about everyone you know is ticked off about something. The good news is that things are rapidly turning around during the second half of the month and you’re entering into some very productive and smart business energy. You’re ready to launch a new project or some kind of professional or fitness oriented new beginning by the end of the month. Aquarius January 21 - February 19 Your home life or someone in your private life is clashing with your professional goals, but they’re also helping you to find solutions to the professional issues you’ve been dealing with. A parent, roommate, or family member is complaining about your priorities, i.e. putting work first, but that same person is helping you come up with ideas on how to fix it. Listen to them when they complain and when they brainstorm; they mean well even if they’re coming across as chaotic and grumpy at first. Pisces February 20 - March 20 As all of the battles between your finances, playtime, and social life fizzle out, you should find that your finances are beginning to improve and you are ready to spend time focusing on your home, roommates, parents, a home-based business, home-improvements, and/or private life. You’re ready to make a fresh start in this area of your life this month.
