The Busy Parent

Few people are more timestrapped than parents. From the moment the alarm chimes, it can feel like a race to get through the day. From prepping for school or day care, to finalizing school projects and running to afterschool activities, there’s hardly a moment to spare! And with career demands, the stress of being a busy parent can really set in and negatively affect the body in many ways. Luckily, some simple tips can help you reduce stress and feel your best while being a good mom or dad to your family. Dr. Keri Marshall, a licensed naturopathic doctor who specializes in paediatrics, women’s medicine, and chronic disease

management, understands the high demands of modern parenting. She offers some important tips that all parents should consider to help reduce stress and improve overall health and well-being: 1. Time Management “Time management is key to reducing stress and helping busy parents keep their sanity. The problem is that time management is a skill that must be learnt, not something we’re born with,” says Marshall. “Staying organized can help you achieve all your goals.” Whether it’s a traditional calendar on the wall, making lists, or a new smartphone app, organize your week and share your

schedule with all family members. Remember to manage priorities - you may have to push grocery shopping a day or two in order to make a child’s band concert or big game. “Also, be sure to schedule breaks throughout the day,” reminds Marshall. “Just five or ten minutes here and there can give you the pause you need to stay calm and collected.” 2. Nourish Your Body What you put into your body makes a huge difference in how you feel. Some foods can even help reduce stress and boost your immunity so you don’t wind up sick, something busy parents simply don’t have time for. “Being stressed causes the

body’s cortisol levels to rise,” explains Marshall. “This stress hormone can cause you to crave unhealthy foods, so resist temptation and eat foods that help calm the body and balance hormones and blood sugar. Foods high in vitamin C, like berries and other bright-coloured fruit, are great for boosting the immune system and balancing cortisol levels.”

and well-being, which is critically important for people battling stress.”

Another simple thing you can do everyday to help reduce stress

and stay healthy is to take a fish oil supplement. “With a number of different benefits, fish oil provides essential Omega-3 fatty acids that can improve heart, joint, and brain health, plus increase immunity. I prefer high-quality fish oil supplements from Nordic Naturals because they are great tasting,” says Marshall. “Another unique benefit of fish oil is it can help to boost mood as well. A growing body of research has demonstrated that Omega-3s can help promote a positive mood

body healthy and increase your productivity levels at work and at home. By making sleep a priority, you’ll help ensure that you make the most of every hour in every day. While the National Sleep Foundation notes that the amount of sleep needed varies from person to person, generally seven to nine hours is considered optimal to maintain health.

4. Share The Workload You know the adage: It takes a village to raise a child? Well, today’s parents are busier than ever, and often they think they need to do it all themselves. Leaning on friends and relatives to help out when needed can dramatically reduce your stress. Plus, it can be a fun change of pace for kids.

“Don’t be afraid to ask for help,” says Marshall. “Raising children is one of life’s greatest adventures, but no one can do it all. There’s no shame in asking Grandma to run the kids to soccer or having a friend watch the kids for a few hours because you have a work deadline. Plus, it’s great bonding time for your children and the loved ones in their life.”

3. Prioritize Sleep “Physical stress can make it difficult to sleep. People stay up later trying to get things done, and then when they do go to bed, they have trouble turning their brain off at the end of the day,” says Marshall. Keep in mind, quality sleep each night can help keep your

Bumpy Pride Many expecting mothers secretly struggle with insecurity due to the many changes their bodies go through during pregnancy. While feeling insecure is normal, it also makes pregnancy less enjoyable. These practical and simple tips help women learn to love their changing silhouette and get more out of each trimester, writes S. Flannery…

If you feel anything but glowing during your pregnancy, don’t worry. Pregnancy isn’t always a smooth ride. Every time you look in the mirror, you see a new outline, and it’s not just your belly that’s changing. While some insecurity is natural during pregnancy, you should still have a chance to enjoy this unique time in your life. The following tips can help you approach all three trimesters with more confidence and acceptance of your new body: Find a Beauty Routine That Works for You For some women, giving up alcohol is easy, but giving up acne wash is heart-breaking. When you’re pregnant, certain skincare products can be dangerous to your unborn baby, including salicylic

14

MARCH 2013

acid and prescription acne medications. Since many women experience hormonal acne breakouts during the first trimester, research your options to find a safe, gentle wash designed for pregnant women. If your doctor recommends against your normal anti-aging creams and lotions, go natural with safe options such as coconut oil. Enlist Your Partner’s Support Fatigue, morning sickness, and other common complaints may put a damper on your love life. In addition, your partner might withdraw because he’s nervous about hurting the baby or feels unsure about your changing condition. Talk honestly about your worries and insecurities. Chances are, your partner still finds you beautiful, but make sure that he knows you need to hear it. If sex is too difficult or your doctor recommends against it, find other ways to connect romantically. An oldfashioned date night or taking time to cuddle can restore your sense of romance and boost your confidence. Start a Safe, Gentle Exercise Routine Always consult with a medical professional before continuing or starting an exercise

routine. However, for most women, low-impact exercise is safe and beneficial during pregnancy. Heading to the local pool, taking a brisk stroll around the neighbourhood, or looking into local prenatal yoga classes can brighten your mood and help you feel more connected with your body. Just stay well hydrated and stop if you experience pain. Invest in Chic Maternity Clothes The very phrase “maternity jeans” might make you feel dowdy. However, contemporary pregnant women don’t have to settle for muumuus. Squeezing yourself into your pre-pregnancy clothes feels like a triumph, but the cut of these clothes can actually hide your bump and emphasize all the wrong aspects of your changing body. Fashionable maternity clothes will help you look beautifully pregnant, not bulky. Don’t be afraid of more form-fitting maternity clothes, which highlight your bump in a flattering way. Stop Comparing Yourself to Other Women Women are often encouraged to compare themselves to other people, whether actresses, models, or next-

For some lucky women, pregnancy is the time when they feel the most beautiful. Pregnancy magazines show smiling models with picture-perfect baby bumps. Celebrities appear at events in gowns that highlight their changing silhouettes. While this focus on the beauty of pregnancy is positive in many ways, it also leaves some mothers feeling cheated as they struggle with insecurity.

door neighbours. Sadly, this trend doesn’t end during pregnancy, but you can make a conscious effort to put an end to this habit. You may know somebody who gained less weight than you during pregnancy, or you might know somebody who shows less quickly. However, your weight is only between you and your doctor or midwife. If you find yourself comparing your pregnant body to someone else’s, make a decision to stop and focus on your own unique, strong, and beautiful body. Find Support from Fellow Mothers Mothers, both new and veteran, can sympathize with your worries and reassure you that you’re not alone. It can make a world of difference to know you’re not the only one on the lunch date dealing with swollen ankles or multiplying stretch marks. If you don’t know many expecting or current mothers in your area, online forums and communities can be a strong source of support and knowledge. Finally, remember that not every pregnancy is the same. If you barely gained weight during your first pregnancy and enjoyed glowing skin and luscious locks, it might lower your confidence when your second pregnancy results in more weight gain than you expected. Take each pregnancy on its own terms, without unrealistic expectations. By remembering to appreciate your body’s ability to support life, pampering yourself, and being open to support, pregnancy can be a time of renewed strength and confidence that lasts well beyond your baby’s birth.

Bedazzled Relationships

The Rules Of Separation Sadly, relationships end, and just as there are rules to dating and marriage, there are three basic rules of separation that everyone should follow when ending a relationship, writes Gail Kavanagh…

hopefully from people close to you, listen to yourself when speaking of your ex. Speak only the honest truth as you know it. Don’t embroider or mislead anyone else about your reasons for the separation. If you have instigated it, accept that responsibility, and make your reasons clear. If they are good to you, that’s all that is required.

Rule 1: Be Fair. By separating, you’re dividing a life that was one into two. One house, one common goal. Be prepared to give a little on the tedious business of ‘Mine and Yours’. While it’s just and right and proper that assets equally gained should be equally shared, allow your ex the dignity of retaining what he or she alone was responsible for acquiring, whether that be material goods or public respect.

If there are children involved, then the requirement to be fair becomes crucial. Unless your ex behaved in an unacceptable way toward the children, acknowledge that they have a right to be able to continue their relationship. It’s only fair to accept your reasons for the separation are your own - you may divorce your ex, but the children will not. If you can look at the situation with integrity and see no reason why the children shouldn’t be with their other parent, work toward a solution that will allow access

While you will need counsel,

and maximum consolation to all concerned. Even if your ex decides to use the children against you, maintain your integrity and don’t stoop to similar tactics. Be fair in their presence - you can rage when you’re alone or with someone you trust. Integrity shines through. Never doubt that. Rule 2: Be Strong. You will need to be strong, for separation is rarely easy. You and your ex may be wounded, worn out from years of conflict, or simply angry over perceived betrayal. The friends you have in common may feel themselves obliged to take sides, and people you thought held you in high regard may show their preference for your ex. Don’t be afraid to ask those who stand by you for advice and support. Some of them

The rules of separation are simple: be fair, be strong, be understanding. Unfortunately, some people don’t follow these rules and make separation doubly hard. But if you really want to make a separation work, you, at least, must resolve to follow the rules. Maintain your own integrity, no matter what the provocation.

may have gone through similar experiences, and be glad to share their insight. When a hand is offered, grasp it. But think of this as only a way to make you stronger, not dependent. When a dream is shattered, the temptation to curl up in a ball and cry is irresistible, and you may do this for a while, but make up your mind that you will give into the grief of a broken dream once only, then you will stand and fight to retain yourself and find your own dream. Rule 3: Be Understanding. People may drift away, your ex may make life difficult, your children may blame you. All you have is your own sense of what is right. But don’t be blind to the pain of others. Understand that they will have these feelings, and that their hurt and bewilderment may be directed at you. Time is a great healer, but not if a wound is allowed to fester with no healing power given to it. As in everything you do, your own integrity and sure knowledge of what’s right for you is the balm you will use to heal the hurt. Remain steadfast in your love of those who may be bewildered by the separation, understand that they cannot see into your heart or mind. Understand that it will take time in some cases to adjust to a totally new situation. But if you’re fair, strong, and understanding, they will come to see that while one relationship in your life has changed, theirs with you and with your ex, need not change. Three simple rules, hard to follow, but in the end, sure to heal the past, as long as there is genuine goodwill.

Bedazzled Friendships

Building Up Your Daughter Building isn’t just for boys; getting your daughter engaged in constructive playtime is essential for her life and social skills…

Sure, you can chalk it up to society’s gender expectations to explain this play divide but does it mean girls have no interest in construction play at all? Unsurprisingly, the answer is no. In fact, girls have just as much to gain from building as boys, and equally enjoy playing with construction toys. Toy companies that specialize in designing building toys, like Mega Bloks, have long researched the patterns of construction play among girls, specifically, and understand its long-term benefits. Parents of girls,

18

MARCH 2013

furthermore, should ensure their daughters are getting this valuable playtime with building toys. From developing language skills to boosting a sense of achievement, construction play serves as a steppingstone for a young child’s intellectual future. “Playing with building toys provides children an ideal way to engage in discovery-based learning,” says Dr. Maureen O’Brien, Developmental Psychologist and Child Play Expert. “It is through this type of learning that children are able to build their confidence through trial and error and develop a sense of achievement, enabling them to physically link their world to the play world, building their brains in the process.” The learning benefits of block play are further enhanced when layered with open-ended, imaginative

play, such as make-believe with dolls. Children begin to understand their world and give it perspective by playing with toys that enhance exploration through customization and storytelling. This combination of block play and role-play is a boost to your child’s development. Understanding that girls love and benefit from creative construction as much as boys do, O’Brien has some tips on incorporating building play as a regular activity for your daughter: Make construction playtime a group activity Given the opportunity to build, girls equally excel at the building process and generate the same levels of satisfaction as boys. By making construction playtime a group activity, girls are also able to spend more time collaborating

Article: Brandpoint.com. Images: Shutterstock.com.

How many times have you walked into your child’s classroom only to see the boys and girls separated into two different groups, playing with completely different toys? The boys are likely huddled around the building blocks, creating skyscrapers and forts, while the girls are busy painting and colouring.

with one another over a building project. By assisting, affirming and supporting each other, girls are strengthening their interpersonal relationships. They are also developing their imaginations and resilience through conversations and collaborations during the process of their building project.

specifically for girls can help them tell their story, like the new Mega Bloks Barbie line. For example, the Mega Bloks Barbie Build n’ Style Luxury Mansion is the perfect balance of building and playing. It allows girls to build, design and re-design, decorate, accessorize, dress-up, and style Barbie doll’s home in any way they want.

Emphasize storytelling Girls love the storytelling aspect of playtime. It allows them to create and express themselves in a fun environment where the possibilities are endless. By connecting a story to their creation, children learn and understand problem solving skills, language development, and the elements of decision making - all important next steps in the learning process. Construction toys designed

Incorporate familiar characters girls love A way to familiarize girls with construction play is with characters they already know and love. For example, the Mega Bloks Barbie construction line features mini figures and iconic Barbie details that appeal to girls. When girls recognize characters, they will likely be more inclined to try something new. Join and guide the fun

Playing with your daughter during building time increases her chances of learning from the activity. Even when parents and children sit and walk through building instructions together, the children are exposed to the problem solving skills needed to assemble the construction set. In addition, by building together, parents are exposing kids to innovative new ways of thinking, sparking creativity and showing a new way to understand the activity. O’Brien encourages parents to break through the traditional playtime expectations to instil lifelong benefits of construction play - especially for girls. The cognitive, spatial, and interpersonal skills they will acquire through a simple shift in their play routine can expose them to numerous future opportunities.

Family Money Matters Think beyond the allowance to teach kids lasting money skills…

One of the best things you can do to prepare your kids for a lifetime of handling money is to get them started early. But it isn’t only about timing - following through with lessons and providing plenty of explanation is essential. Keep these tips in mind to give your kids a leg up in learning about finances: Start saving. The earlier you can get your kids into the habit of saving, the more they’ll have to enjoy down the road. The concept doesn’t need to be overly complex - and it shouldn’t be when you’re dealing with very young children. Piggy banks are a perfect tool for starting saving habits; a simple glass jar works, too, and gives kids an exciting visual to associate with their savings. As your children grow, so should their ideas about saving money. Opening a real savings account in your child’s name is not only an exciting event

20

MARCH 2013

for her, it builds an early understanding of banking. Some schools and banks even have partnerships that allow students to make deposits at school. If your school doesn’t offer such a program, make trips to the bank with your kids and show them how to monitor their accounts. Have on-going conversations about money. Making your children comfortable with discussing finances is a gift that, while not flashy, will serve them well throughout their lives. Start conversations about needs versus wants, budgeting and life’s necessary expenditures. Encourage price comparison skills by going grocery shopping together and looking at different brands. Set an example by telling kids how you save up to buy an item that you want and ways that you cut costs - and what you can get from the savings. If there’s something your child wants, provide guidance and ideas for how to save up the amount needed to make the purchase. Effectively use an allowance. An allowance is a tricky thing - it can be a good teaching tool, but you don’t want your kids to view it as a hand-out. Whether or not you choose to associate chores with an allowance is

up to you, but you should have discussions with your children about when allowances will be paid, and how they can be spent - or saved. Encourage savings by providing two bank envelopes - one for savings and one for spending. If your budget allows for it, consider a “match” program in which you contribute a percentage every time your child makes a savings deposit. Don’t be afraid of mistakes. Some of the most powerful lessons lie in making mistakes; so don’t be afraid to let your children make some lessthan-perfect decisions. Whether they overspend their budgets or waste money on something frivolous and later regret it, it’s important for them to learn the consequences of financial mismanagement early in life. Teaching kids about money can be daunting, but doing so lays the groundwork for a stable financial future. Whenever possible, make lessons about money fun, yet practical; emphasize that money doesn’t have to be scary, and that good things come from using it wisely. Visit the Equifax Finance Blog (blog.equifax.com) for more useful information and tips on managing family money matters.

One of the most exciting parts of parenthood is watching your children learn as they grow. Of course, life’s lessons can be tough just as often as they can be pleasant. And as you want to protect kids from falling off their bike or scraping a knee, you also want to set them up for a successful financial future, as free from worries as possible.

Every month we speak to an expert or practitioner in a field for some invaluable insight. This month we spoke to Donna Benton, CEO of the Entertainer… Give us a brief background on your job/company and your role in it. I am the founder and CEO of the Entertainer, a Dubaibased international company that provides two-for-one incentive vouchers for dining, leisure, beauty, entertainment, and hotel accommodation across the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and Europe. I started the company 12 years ago in Dubai, and we now produce 21 different books in 14 destinations.

and I love it! What do you like most about your job, and what do you like least? I am very passionate about all areas of the business, and I still get a huge buzz when I’m out and I see someone using the vouchers in a restaurant, attraction, or café. There is nothing about my job that I dislike. However, I would say that the area that is the most challenging is the extensive travel that comes with our geographic expansion. While

The response from customers has been strong so far and our sales are up by 400%. What’s the gender bias/ advantages/challenges in your job? I usually get up around 6.30am and do my morning routine of getting my daughter up, ready for the day, and dropping her off to the nursery. My role is very diverse and demanding,

I love seeing new places, it often takes me away from our daughter, which is difficult at times. What are the advantages/ challenges of your job/ industry specific to Saudi Arabia? Saudi Arabia is obviously a huge market for us, and a very important one. This year we have two books in the country, one in Riyadh and Eastern Province, and one in Jeddah. Last year, which was our first year with a book in Saudi Arabia, we had

be very collaborative and everyone works together collectively towards our company’s goals. I believe this gives us an advantage as a company, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. How does technology affect your job and how do you apply it? The main way in which technology has impacted us in the past few years was in introducing products that competed against the Entertainer. For us this has been by and large very

positive. Many people were predicting that we would be harmed by the online daily-deal-type sites and, if anything, we have actually grown to be much stronger over the past few years. Our brand offers something compelling that many of the more technologically driven competitors cannot - which is consistency of the offer and the ability for our users to control and plan their experience with our offers. That being said, we do have exciting developments in this area to announce in the near future that are key to our future growth plans. Watch this space!

What are the important exhibitions/magazines/ things to know and follow in your industry? It’s, of course, important to ensure that we have strong knowledge of each of the industries that we include within the books and the customer trends for travel, F&B, and beauty. These tastes and habits are different within each market we enter so we must be aware of these differences when putting together each book. It’s also vital that we know all the new potential merchants in each of the countries/areas that we work in and ensure we build good, long-term relationships together. Our operations team, therefore, does a lot of research on the ground with customers, industry exhibitions, and networking groups to make sure we have the proper mix. Dealing With APTs

Government bodies reveal surging apt-style attacks and Fortinet highlights the importance of an intelligent network security strategy… New research commissioned by Trend Micro with Quocirca, shows that over 73% of public sector bodies said they had knowingly been victims of a targeted attack in the past with 38% saying these attacks had caused a significant impact on their organisation. The commissioned survey of 300 organisations in a range of sectors and sizes in the UK, Germany, and France gained insight into Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs) that have now become a mainstream mode of attack for both cybercriminals and hacktivists. Yet despite these experiences, over a third (35%) thought targeted attacks weren’t a cause for concern. Given the increasingly large fines levied by the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office for data breaches, and the negative publicity that comes as a result, failing to adequately prepare for such threats would appear to be a dangerous oversight. “Governments are consistently among the top sectors targeted by advanced persistent threats and international espionage”, said Rik Ferguson, Trend Micro VP of Security Research. “To discover that those victims and potential victims see it as “no cause for concern” betrays a worrying lack of comprehension of the nature and breadth of attack technologies arrayed against them and little regard for their persistence or sophistication. Effective security begins with the acceptance that breach will happen but must be designed to collect immediate actionable intelligence to allow threats to be identified and contained within the smallest possible timeframe.” 26

MARCH 2013

Those interviewed public sector bodies were among the most exposed of any sector to such sophisticated threats: 79% said they were regularly or occasionally hit by zero day malware over the past 12 months, 73% had been exposed to polymorphic malware, 79% by encrypted malware, and 82% to social engineering attacks. While not always an indication of a targeted attack, these threats do illustrate an increasingly sophisticated and persistent foe. Risky Business Identifying improper behaviour among the devices connected to their network is a critical tool for any organisation concerned about APTs. In light of the rapidly changing landscape of such targeted malware attacks, Fortinet lists the top five types of behaviour that might indicate that a device has been infected: 1. Bad Connection Attempts: Typical malware behaviour often includes attempts to connect to hosts that don’t exist on the internet. While some bad connections may be due to user error or bad links, a series of bad connections could be a sign of malware infection. 2. Choice of Application: A host that installs a P2P filesharing application can be considered riskier than a host that installs a game. Some organisations may consider both actions problematic. The ability to add weights to each action allows each risk to be scored accordingly. 3. Geographic Location: Visits to hosts in certain countries can be categorised as risky behaviour,

especially if there is a significant amount of traffic involved. Identifying such behaviour can be combined with a white list approach that identifies legitimate sites in such countries to help identify infected clients. 4. Session Information: When a device starts to listen on a port to receive a connection from the outside but does not initiate a connection, an APT infection could be the cause. 5. Destination Category: Visiting certain types of websites, such as gambling and adult sites as well as those known to contain malicious code can also be a predictor of APT infection. Bashar Bashaireh, Fortinet ME Regional Director, explains, “Identifying risky user and application behaviour represents the next step in protection against APTs. We see that organisations in the Middle East are beginning to recognise the importance of building a complete, evolving, and up-to-date picture of the behaviour of network clients. As signature-based protection is no longer enough, we recommend implementing client reputation and scoring to help order and understand the enormous amount of security information available within organisations and applying it to a dynamic, targeted security response.” These and other related findings are further explored in Fortinet’s new white paper - Detecting What’s Flying Under the Radar: The Importance of Client Reputation in Defending Against Advanced Threats. RSV: 3 Lethal Letters Like many parents, Heidi Staats had never heard of Respiratory Syncytial Virus, commonly known as RSV, until she almost lost her son to the common, yet potentially severe disease it can cause…

RSV usually causes mild to moderate cold-like symptoms but in some infants it can cause a serious lung infection. While the virus affects nearly 100% of babies before the age of two, premature babies, defined as those born before 37 weeks gestation, are most at risk for developing severe RSV disease. Preemies are not as wellequipped to fight RSV as fullterm babies because they are born with underdeveloped lungs and a lesser amount of vital antibodies. These antibodies are necessary to stave off infections. Since Heidi wasn’t aware of the need to take extra precautions,

28

MARCH 2013

she wasn’t alarmed about Brett being around other children and enrolled him in day-care when he was six weeks old. During his second week, one of the teachers mentioned that another child had RSV, a virus Heidi had never heard of. Heidi noticed that Brett had a little cough, but no fever or sniffles. Erring on the side of caution, Heidi took him to the doctor. At that visit, it was noted that Brett’s lungs sounded clear and strong. “The next day, January 13, is a day I will always remember,” says Heidi. “I called day-care to check in on Brett and the teachers said he seemed fine, but a bit more lethargic than usual. However, within a few hours the teacher noticed that Brett was unresponsive and grey in colour and they immediately called 911.” On the way to the hospital, the paramedics were able to stabilize Brett with an oxygen mask, but shortly after arriving, he stopped breathing again. Doctors had to intubate Brett and transport him via helicopter to a nearby children’s hospital where he could receive the specialized intensive care needed to save his life. “I was incredibly confused about what was happening,” says Heidi. “When we arrived at the

hospital, I overheard one of the doctors saying the baby just brought in from the day-care had coded. Then, I noticed one of the paramedics had tears in his eyes. I knew this wasn’t a good sign but was in complete denial; how could this be my baby boy, who just yesterday had been deemed healthy?” Later that night, it was confirmed that severe RSV disease was what had caused Brett to stop breathing. He spent six days on the ventilator in the NICU and two more days at the hospital slowly regaining his strength. Severe RSV disease is the leading cause of infant hospitalization in the U.S., and is responsible for 1 of every 13 paediatrician visits and 1 of every 38 trips to the E.R. Additionally, while deaths are not common, severe RSV disease causes up to 10 times as many infant deaths each year as the flu, resulting in up to 400 infant deaths annually in the U.S. In addition to premature infants, other populations at high risk for developing severe RSV disease include children with congenital heart disease and/or chronic lung disease. Risk factors for severe RSV disease include low birth weight (less than 5.5 pounds), young chronological age (12 weeks of age at the onset of RSV season), and

Heidi’s son, Brett, was born only a month preterm. Despite his early arrival, Brett weighed a hearty seven pounds and was deemed ready for discharge after a few short days. Because of his healthy appearance, doctors didn’t think of Brett as a typical “preemie” and didn’t inform Heidi of the increased risks that impact all preterm infants, even those born just a few weeks early. In fact, even though he was a preemie, Brett wasn’t considered to be at high risk for developing severe RSV disease and Heidi wasn’t aware of the dangers of RSV, particularly for premature infants born during the RSV season (November - March).

situational risk factors such as attending day-care, crowded living conditions, having preschool or school-aged siblings, or exposure to tobacco smoke. Because there is no treatment specific for RSV disease, Heidi wants all parents to know there are simple steps they can take to help protect their baby from the virus. “I want all parents to know about Brett’s story and learn about the dangers of RSV,” says Heidi. “I’m so thankful that Brett is alive and thriving today. All parents should know how they can protect their little ones this winter.” To help protect your baby from

RSV, you should: * Understand the risk factors and ask your child’s paediatrician if your child may be at increased risk. * Help prevent the spread of the virus by frequently washing your baby’s hands, toys, and bedding, and by keeping your baby away from large crowds, young children, and people with colds. Additionally, anyone who touches the baby should wash their hands. * Carefully monitor your baby’s behaviour for signs and symptoms like a severe cough or wheezing; difficulty breathing

or rapid, gasping breaths; blue colour of the lips, mouth, and/ or fingernails; difficulty feeding; fatigue and fever. “I’ve seen how quickly severe RSV disease can develop, and how devastating it can be to families,” says paediatric critical care physician, Kari Kassir, M.D., of Children’s Hospital of Orange County. “While frequent hand washing is essential in preventing the spread of RSV, it’s also important to talk with your child’s paediatrician to determine if he or she is at high risk during the RSV season.” Visit www.RSVprotection.com for more information.

Health Dilemmas

My son has Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, which is a hard condition to deal with. Can you tell me ways to make it easier? Sabah, Jeddah Having a reliable support system is important to all of us. It’s particularly important to the families of those living with LennoxGastaut syndrome (LGS), a severe and rare form of epilepsy that affects an estimated one in 50,000 to one in 100,000 children and up to 4% of children with epilepsy. Many families struggle with the demands of caring for a loved one with this condition - a task that requires around-the-clock attention and support. LGS is characterized by three key characteristics: a clinical triad of a slow spike-andwave pattern on an EEG; impairment of cognitive function; multiple types of seizures, including tonic (muscle stiffening), atypical absence (staring), and atonic (loss of muscle tone) seizures being the most common.

Ask Nisrine

Despite therapeutic advances, LGS is challenging to control as many children require constant care and support from a variety of health professionals. This can be taxing on parents and families and finding the right combination of health professionals to provide optimal care for a loved one with LGS can seem like an overwhelming task! “There is no question that caring for a child with LGS can present many challenges and it’s highly recommended that for optimal care, a child’s healthcare team be integrated from the start,” says Patricia A. Gibson, M.S.S.W., director of the Epilepsy Information Service at Wake Forest Medical Centre in Winston-Salem, N.C. “Support for these families continues to be more readily available as we learn more and more about this unique condition.”

1. Find a trusted resource in your local area Your paediatrician or neurologist will often know about additional resources in your area. Seeking advice from other parents of children with developmental disabilities may also help you uncover local resources. 2. Ask the right questions When identifying potential members of your care team, don’t hesitate to ask questions to ensure they meet your needs. For example, how many other children with LGS or other developmental disorders have you cared for? Ideally, your care team will have experience with seizure disorders. 3. Look for support close to home Your family and social network are also an important part of your team. While the challenges associated with LGS can put a strain on your family, it’s increasingly important to band together. Talk to those you trust about your issues and concerns. Take your friends up on their offers to babysit. Let them help you seek out resources. 4. Be patient As you build your team of experts, try to practice patience and remember that your team will be a work in progress, adjusting as the needs of your child and family continue to change over time.

A health care team will likely consist of multiple doctors including, but not limited to, a paediatrician, neurologist, neurosurgeon, physical, occupational, and speech therapists as well as physicians for dental and eye care. The best approach for each child is highly individualized and is constantly evolving. Patricia Gibson offers these tips for identifying your LGS support team:

Essential Skincare For New Mothers Along with the joys of motherhood, come the responsibilities - not only of caring for the baby, but of caring for your new and changed skin, writes Roz Andrews…

Stretch Mark Cream: Almost all new mothers have at least some stretch marks and a stretch mark cream will help minimize them by toning the skin. Choose a good quality stretch mark cream with ingredients such as collagen, elastin, and vitamin E. Apply it twice a day to the areas of your body that have stretch marks.

Body Firming Cream: Sagging breasts, stomach, and buttocks

often appear after pregnancy. A body firming cream will help to lift and firm the sagging areas of your body, so that you regain your pre-pregnancy shape quicker. Apply the body firming cream at least once a day to all of your problem areas. Intensive Body Lotion: Dry skin is very common after pregnancy, so use an intensive body lotion on your legs, arms and abdomen to replenish your skin’s moisture reserves. Apply after bathing or showering and at other times of the day when your skin feels dry, tight, or itchy.

Facial Moisturizer(s): The skin on your face may feel drier and tauter than before pregnancy, so you may need to invest in a moisturizer for dry skin. Apply a day cream in the morning and a more intensive night cream before going to bed to nourish your skin.

Nipple Care Cream: If you’re nursing your baby, a nipple care cream is indispensable to soothe and moisturize the nipple area and prevent sore, cracked, or even bleeding nipples. Choose a cream with natural ingredients that does not have to be removed before nursing. Apply liberally to the nipples and nipple area after each feed.

Hand Wash: As a new mother, you will be washing your hands many times a day - after each nappy change, before preparing bottles, etc. It’s important, therefore, that you choose a moisturizing hand wash that will protect your hands every time you wash them. A hand wash with anti-bacterial properties is a good choice too. Keep separate bottles of hand wash next to each basin in which you wash your hands.

Hand Cream: Even if you use 32

As a new mother, it’s all too easy to forget to look after yourself. You probably don’t have time or opportunity to go to the hairdresser or beauty salon, but you can apply skincare products at home. In just five minutes a day, you will feel happier and healthier and your body will benefit. Here is a run-down of the essential products you will need:

a moisturizing hand wash, it’s still important to moisturize your hands after washing them in order to prevent sore, dry, and chapped hands. Place a tube of hand cream next to each bottle of hand wash in your home so that you can use it after each hand wash. Put a small tube of hand lotion in your handbag so that you can use it when you’re out and about as it is rarely provided in restrooms. Treat yourself to a tube of intensive moisturizing or anti-ageing hand cream and apply it twice a day to ensure that your hands look and feel their best.

Foot Lotion: During pregnancy, your feet will have suffered from carrying extra weight. You may also notice that the skin has become much drier and you may have developed such complaints as corns and cracked skin on the heels. It’s important, therefore, that you invest in a good quality foot lotion that will re-hydrate and condition your feet. Apply the lotion twice daily, after bathing or showering, and before going to bed.

If you follow a daily postpregnancy skincare routine and combine it with a healthy diet and moderate exercise, it will not be long before you begin to feel like your pre-pregnancy self, and your baby will benefit from having a happy mother. www.dazzle-magazine.com

Beauty Dilemmas

I have tried many, many creams that promise to make my skin better but nothing works! Am I using them wrong or is there something you can suggest that would work? Maria, Riyadh

You’re not doing anything wrong Maria; it’s just that your beauty routine should go beyond one bottle. The radiance of youthful skin is something that everyone is lucky enough to have at some point. But as the years pass, that nature-given glow tends to dull and slacken, leaving most people searching for a way to recapture that look. The booming cosmetic and skincare business produces plenty of one-jar wonders that promise radical results, but many of them don’t deliver. However, dermatology experts know that taking a broader approach to caring for your skin is the optimal way to get results.

Ask Sonja

Skin is inherently complex, and it faces a daunting variety of challenges, so it makes sense that treating it effectively takes an equally multi-faceted strategy. From your lifestyle choices and habits to the products you use, keep three things in mind when it comes to your skin: protection, reversal, and rejuvenation. Many people think that having younger-looking skin is simply a matter of not having wrinkles, but according to Dr. Neil Sadick, a renowned dermatologist and researcher, it goes far beyond that. “Changes in pigmentation, pore size, fine lines, and skin tone all contribute to skin looking older,” Sadick says. “So it’s important to treat each of those problems and address the causes in order to maintain a youthful look.” Because skincare shouldn’t be an afterthought, it’s important for women of all ages to protect their skin starting in their 20s and 30s. But no matter your age, consider these tips for keeping your skin healthy and looking its best:

Confused about makeup? Having a problem making the most of your features? What products to use? Ask Sonja to solve your problems!

Sun protection: Avoiding the sun is the best way to prevent damage from its UVA and UVB rays, but as summer arrives and spending time outdoors takes over, it’s often unavoidable. Using a skin cream with a minimum SPF of 20 will help protect your skin, but you should also use clothing, like hats, lightweight long sleeved shirts, and long pants, to keep the sun off your skin.

Staying hydrated: One of the best ways to keep your skin glowing is to keep it supplied with water. But you’ll need to do more than keep a bottle of water handy. Use a moisturizer that keeps your skin continuously hydrated - not only will it help your skin look better in the moment, but it also helps to protect over the long term. Your face is your calling card - the first thing people see when they meet you, and often, what they most remember about you. Protecting your skin with a multifaceted routine will help you put your best face forward for years to come. For more information on healthy skin, visit www.sadickdermatologygroup.com. 34

A well-rounded skincare regimen: Just as a diet made up of only one food wouldn’t be enough to fuel your body, a one-dimensional approach to skincare won’t be sufficient to keep your skin looking its best. A regimen that protects during the day, works to reverse signs of aging, and rejuvenates through the night will address all of your skin’s needs. The Park Avenue Prescription kit from Sadick Dermatology group includes two creams and a serum, which are clinically proven to address visible signs of aging and help prevent and reverse environmental damage. The kit is affordably priced at select Sephora stores and online.

Brilliant Interiors

s m o ro d e B r le d d o T le b a in Susta Whether you’ve been taking steps toward green living or you’re a newbie and want to jump start your efforts and reduce your carbon footprint, one area of opportunity is your toddler’s room…

Wooden Toys: Even Kourtney Kardashian promotes wooden, sustainable toys as opposed to plastic toys on her mommyblog. Some of the top reasons to buy wooden toys are to conserve energy - it takes more energy and fuel to make plastic toys; plastic toys are made with chemicals - and we all know how toddlers tend to stick toys in their mouths; and wooden toys are more durable compared to plastic toys - you also don’t have to replace batteries. Fabrics: Consider bedding, curtain treatments, and upholstery. “Think about choosing natural fibres such as linens and bamboo,” says Kelly Spewock, Interior Design Department Director at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh. “Bamboo is the most popular at the moment, and it’s also a renewable resource. Also, a blend of cottons with acrylic and rayon make great upholstery fabrics.” Worried about the softness to the touch? Cotton textiles 50

MARCH 2013

that are brushed are soft on toddler’s skin, and so are terry clothes made of hemp and cotton. Try to avoid dyes. Cotton is the best for preventing irritated skin and breakouts, and it’s also easy to clean. Repurposing Furniture: If you’re taking the room from baby to toddler-friendly, Spewock recommends repurposing your furniture. “Get creative by converting the crib into a bed by taking off the railings and use old wooden boxes as shelving,” Spewock says. Go the shabby chic route by sanding an old desk and painting it white or a pastel colour. Then, remove some of the paint with a cloth for an old/distressed look and feel. Saw off half of the table’s legs to make a toddler-accessible play/work area, Spewock says. Flooring & Carpeting: Carefully consider flooring and carpeting because toddlers are just a few feet off the floor and on their hands and knees all day. “Carpets are tough. You have to constantly steam clean them to get rid of the dust mites and dirt they collect. Toddlers are breathing the dust, dirt, and the glues on wall to wall carpeting,” Held says. Carpets with natural fibres create less off-gassing (toxins and glue coming from the carpets and furniture). She recommends Amtico floors, which can be made to resemble wood, tile, stone, and linoleum. “But, nothing beats wood flooring,” Held says. “Again, it is naturally antibacterial, easy to

clean, and warm to bare skin.” Sustainable Walls: Spewock recommend Zero-VOC paint that has no off-gassing and is water-soluble. Paint gives off fumes just like the glue in furniture and fabrics in the carpets. “Ten years ago you’d pay twice as much for environmentally friendly paint. Now, it’s affordable and much more common,” she says. Plants: Educate children through design and teach them through example, recommend both Spewock and Held. “Introduce green plants and teach your toddler how to take care of them,” Held says. Plants get rid of toxins you don’t want in your air. Natural Light: Consider maximizing the natural light in your toddler’s room. “It’s been proven in a classroom setting that children stay awake, more alert, and they are generally happier when exposed to natural light,” Held says. Expose them to fresh air, especially if your home is cooled by central air-conditioning where toxins are circulated. Open up and freshen up to avoid harvesting viruses, dust mites, animal hair, etc. Nature Décor: Decorate the walls using symbols and imagery such as trees, a globe of the world, and other items that represent the natural world. Two interior design instructors from The Art Institutes share how to make your toddler’s room sustainable. “Sustainability is a popular subject, and most experts in design agree that sustainability has to be a way of living and incorporated into our every day,” says Kristina Held, Interior Design Instructor at The Art Institute of Charlotte. “Wooden toys like Plan or Haba toys, which are wood and naturally antibacterial, are a small investment and a good place to start.”

Extraordinary Museums

Whether it’s mustard, accordions, or angels, Wisconsinites have a unique way of taking a hobby and turning it into an exhibit hall. Wisconsin, USA, is home to an eclectic mix of museums that go beyond the ordinary and are the product of a passionate person with a vision so strong that erecting a museum is quite simply the most reasonable option. Both entertaining and educational, the following Wisconsin museums offer an out-of-the-box perspective to visitors. If Rocks Could Talk: House On The Rock, Spring Green No words can truly describe House

on the Rock in its entirety. This classic Wisconsin museum features hundreds of eclectic displays and out-of-the-ordinary collections, from the world’s largest carousel to more than 600 Santas. One of many spectacular displays is the daring Infinity Room, a glasswalled structure that projects 218 feet out and sits 156 feet off the ground. This is a ‘see it to believe it’ destination. Music In The Ear Of The Beholder: World Of Accordions, Superior Whether it’s polka music or simply the romantic tune of ‘That’s Amore’, there’s nothing quite like

an accordion to turn a song from nice to unforgettable. Visit the World of Accordions museum and you’ll see how these squeeze boxes have transformed throughout the years. Helmi Harrington, the living and breathing force behind the World of Accordions, maintains a repair shop, technicians’ school, concert hall, and the museum, which houses the world’s largest collection of accordion family instruments and cultural artefacts. Holding The Weight Of The Paper World: Bergstrom-Mahler Museum, Neenah Hobbies come in all shapes, sizes, and weights. At 10-years-old,

Tired of an ordinary holiday? Head to Wisconsin, USA, for the most quirky and extraordinary museums…

Evangeline Hoysradt took an interest in her grandmother’s unique paperweight. Years later at an antique show, Evangeline spotted a paperweight that looked just like it and was inspired. Six hundred and fifty-two paperweights later, she became an expert. In addition to having the world’s most representative collection of paperweights, the museum has four permanent glass collections, a collection of Germanic drinking vessels, and offers glass blowing classes. Sweet Or Spicy? Taste Your Pick: National Mustard Museum, Middleton Standing in an all-night supermarket looking for the meaning of life, National Mustard Museum founder and curator Barry Levenson heard a voice, “If you collect us, they will come.” That experience led to this most improbable museum that now houses more than 5,600 mustard varieties from 50 states and 70 countries. The museum is also home to hundreds of mustard items of historical importance and a tasting bar with free samples. The Birthplace Of Heavy Metal: Castle Rock Museum, Alma For a rare look at some of the most intricate and artistically fascinating armour out there, a Renaissance fair just doesn’t cut it. You need to visit the Castle Rock Museum in Alma. It all began when Gary Schlosstein, at age 10,

acquired a Civil War musket for $3. Now his museum is the most complete arms and armour display in the Midwest. The museum takes you through 2,000 years of history and hundreds of pieces of arms and armour. Heaven Sent: Angel Museum, Beloit Every time a bell rings in this museum of angel figurines, you can only imagine what happens. A love affair with an Italian bisque angel discovered by Joyce Berg was the impetus that began the world’s largest angel figurine collection. The museum of 11,000 angel figurines also features a collection of 600 African American angels donated by Oprah Winfrey. Just Your Type: Hamilton Wood Type Museum, Two Rivers Wood type is having a resurgence, and the Hamilton Wood Type Museum is the only museum in the world dedicated to the preservation, study, and production of printing and wood type. When a collector almost purchased the equipment and patterns from the original Hamilton Wood Type Company, local businessman Jim Van Lanen persuaded the Historical Society to step in. The museum now houses 1.5 million pieces of wood type and more than 1,000 styles and sizes of patterns as well as an amazing array of advertising from the 1930s to the 1970s.

Let’s Get To The Pint: National Brewery Museum, Potosi Did you know there’s a beer museum in Wisconsin? Go figure. But this isn’t your run of the mill ode to grain; this is the National Brewery Museum. A brewery with mad hops, it’s located in the small village of Potosi (population 700), which beat out cities like St. Louis and Milwaukee to become the site of the museum. Exhibits here include beer labels, bottles, coasters, glassware, advertising, signage, and other memorabilia. Three Rings Make A Right: Circus World, Baraboo Baraboo is home to a deep circus history. In fact, the three largest circuses in the world were all located in Baraboo at one time. Today its history is preserved for future generations at the 64-acre Circus World Museum, the vision of a Ringling family attorney. Located on the original winter quarters of the Ringling Brothers Circus, visitors to this National Landmark Site, which houses two-thirds of the world’s surviving circus wagons, can explore decades of circus history. Dazztrology Aries March 21 - April 20 You have a handful of planets moving through Aries this month. They’re boosting your confidence and encouraging you to not allow others to put you into a box or to shame you into ‘playing it small’. Most of the time, this is working out wonderfully for you. However, an authority figure in your life is really unhappy about the new you. He might be right that you need to fine-tune your presentation or he could just be a control freak; you have to figure out which is the case without burning any bridges. Taurus April 21 - May 21 You and a partner are still feeling social and adventurous. As the month progresses, you find yourself wanting to bust out of the various restraints, real and imagined, that hold you back. You’re in a great place for letting go of negativity, self-destructive behaviours, and/or ideas that have kept you from achieving your goals. You’re also ready to thumb your nose at bureaucratic dramas and society’s rules. You’re feeling rebellious, but you’re entertaining these ideas in private. Gemini May 22 - June 21 The month starts with you focusing on good news from your professional life. You’re accomplishing a lot, earning profits, and taking on leadership roles. You’re occasionally upset about how a boss or high profile client is treating you. The end of the month has you focusing on your social life, teams, ecommerce, and/or internet activities. You’re coming across as a smart, fun, and tenacious team player, which is great for your professional and social activities, but not for your love life or finances. Cancer June 22 - July 23 You and a partner are having a lovely time together. The two of you are enjoying broadening your horizons. You’re also questioning some of the injustices, stupid rules, and political dramas that you’re learning about. You’re also spending quite a bit of time this month working on your professional goals and taking on leadership roles. Your partner is not too happy about it, but you’re still meant to take advantage of the positive energy flowing through your professional life. Leo July 24 - August 23 You have a bunch of planets in your chart area that promotes travelling and getting involved in legal, religious, academic, and/or multicultural activities. You’re in the mood to broaden your horizons. These planets are receiving positive energies from Jupiter in your internet, networking, and teamwork sector. It’s a great time for road trips, classes, and other ideas for combining your social life with your need to explore the world. However, beware that your career is clashing with these ideas. Virgo August 24 - September 23 You have a handful of planets in your chart area that governs your ability to trust; things like loyalty, greed, joint assets, and investments are all part of that section. Most of the time, these planets help you bring more financial and romantic security into your life, especially when your career and public life are concerned. However, your focus on these topics is making it difficult for you to have fun. Also, a child, pet, and/or hobby is clashing with your desire to increase profits and romance in your life.

MARCH 2013

By Skye Thomas Tomorrow’s Edge

Libra September 24 - October 23

You have a lot of drama in your chart area that governs partnerships and rivalries. The bad news is that your home, parents, roommates, retirement plans, and/or chores are causing this partner/rival to get really angry. The good news is that the two of you are doing extremely well when you focus on academic, legal, religious, cultural, and/or travel projects together. You’re also doing well at work and finding ways to improve your financial situation while working on your residential and professional projects. Scorpio October 24 - November 22 You have the planets in charge of genius, wealth, optimism, and tenacity all travelling through your work sector. They’re taking turns connecting with the good luck planet in your profits sector. This could be an excellent time for you to brainstorm lucrative ideas that boost productivity and employee morale. You also have some of last month’s playtime and fun energy still encouraging you to take time off. You don’t appear to have any trouble juggling your playtime and professional activities. Sagittarius November 23 - December 21 During the first half of the month, you’re mostly focused on your home life, parents, retirement planning, or real estate deals. Despite your partner or rival’s occasional complaints, these home related activities seem to be going quite well. During the second half of the month, your focus changes to playtime. You’re in the mood for romance, hobbies, creativity, vacations, and spending quality time with pets, children, and loved ones. Capricorn December 22 - January 20 There’s a lot of excitement happening with your parents, roommates, houseguests, retirement plans, home improvement projects, real estate deals, or something home related. Most of the time, this is a great development. Professionally, it’s working out nicely for you. However, there are times when you get really annoyed at how it’s playing out. Chaos is a natural part of this activity or personality within your home life, but the controlling side of your personality is uncomfortable with it. Aquarius January 21 - February 19 You have a wonderfully fun and clever energy promoting the idea that you and your relatives, neighbours, and local community should be enjoying good times together. Unfortunately, your finances are not cooperating at all. And to make matters worse, there are addictions, dysfunctional relationships, bureaucrats, secrets, gossip, and/or hidden agendas that are putting a dark cloud on everyone’s ability to really feel good about the situation. Pisces February 20 - March 20 You’re still clashing with your roommates, parents, or housing matters. However, your financial sector and your home sector are getting along beautifully throughout most of the month. Maybe you should just throw money at whomever or whatever it is in your home or private life that keeps upsetting you. You’re also still in a good place socially and are having a great time learning new things and expanding your horizons.
