A Stellar Dad

Tim McGraw shifts gears on Two Lanes Of Freedom, writes Deborah Evans Price/CMA Close Up News Service/Country Music Association Inc…

“After the past 20 years of doing this, it’s interesting when you really feel like you are a brand-new artist but you’re not,” said McGraw. “The best part about it is I feel the freshness and the attitude that you have when you cut your first record, but I’ve got a vast well of experience behind me. The place I’m at in my career is a good place. It’s a good dichotomy. It’s all fresh and new and exciting, and the music reflects all of that. But it comes with everything that I’ve done throughout my career. “I felt like Two Lanes of Freedom was another sort of Everywhere album for me in a lot of ways,” he added, referencing his fourth disc, which has been certified Quadruple Platinum.

12

JUNE 2013

“Everywhere was an album where I really felt like I could understand what I was doing and had more and more input on the making of the record and the sounds that I wanted to have. I’ve always been that way, but Everywhere was when I got my confidence in making records. “Two Lanes of Freedom, to me, is another turning point in my life and career,” he added. “It’s an Everywhere moment, making this record. It reflects that. It was like turning a corner.” Though he’s long enjoyed a happy home life with wife Faith Hill and their three daughters, McGraw’s business relationships have undergone many changes during the past few years, as he has acquired new management, a new publicist and a new label. “Change is always a good thing,” he reflected. “I’ve been fortunate that I’ve had good people around me throughout my career. I’ve been able

to sort of sit in a great train and drive and find my artistic tracks, so to speak. Now it feels like I’m at a place where I can take that to a bigger and better experience.” That place includes Big Machine Records, which became his label after a very public departure from Curb Records. McGraw is especially happy about being able to work with Scott Borchetta, President/CEO of the Big Machine Label Group. “There are lots of things that make him successful,” he said. “His energy, for one: He has a tremendous amount of energy. It reflects off of him and energizes everyone around him. When you have that sort of positive energy, it can’t help but elevate the situation you’re in and elevate everybody around you. “More than that,” McGraw continued, “He recognizes artists and lets them be artists. He appreciates what they do and figures out a way to make it work in a marketing and commercial sense. He

One relationship that remains constant in his business career is with his long-time producer, Byron Gallimore. “I wouldn’t even think about going into the studio without Byron,” he said. “He allows me to be an artist and allows me to be creative. I have this freedom to not have to think about any borders when I’m recording, because I know he’s not going to let it get crazy or let it go where it gets bad. There’s a fine line between creating really good, fresh, instinctual stuff that you love and just making bad stuff. Sometimes artists don’t know when they’ve crossed it. Byron is my musical consciousness in a lot of ways.” “Tim and I have always complemented each other,” Gallimore said. “We see songs the same. We like a lot of the same songs and agree on the songs we think are hits. It never feels like there’s a rub or anything where we totally disagree. We have a mutual respect and anything I’ve wanted to try or do in the studio, he’s been wonderful to try it. And that goes both

longevity? “If I could answer that, I probably wouldn’t tell anybody,” he replied, laughing. “I don’t know! I just try to know who I am as an artist and try to stay true to who I am as an artist. I don’t try to reinvent myself. I just try to go in and make records that make me feel like I’m doing what I want to do. I make the kind of music that I want to make.” Gallimore attributes his friend’s ongoing success to “his excellent song taste. He’s not one to pass on many hits. Another thing is the emotion in Tim’s voice, the way he’s able to connect with a song, especially on ballads. He has a way of touching people that’s just hard to describe.”

“I’ve changed a lot of things in my life,” McGraw summed up. “I quit drinking five years ago. I have a different perspective on what my future is and what I want to get out of it. I didn’t think that I was anywhere close to done and didn’t just want to ride it out. There’s a lot more of my career ahead of me than behind me. I just want to shift gears. I want to go from third to fourth - and I still have fifth left.” On the Web: www.TimMcGraw.com On Twitter: @TheTimMcGraw

Understanding

Bipolar

Disorder

Media coverage of people with bipolar disorder doesn’t fully explain this serious mental illness, how best to treat it, and how it can affect those who have it, as well as their families, friends, and coworkers. To explain what bipolar disorder is and psychology’s role in identifying and treating it, the American Psychological Association (APA) asked Dr. Eric A. Youngstrom, PhD, Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Acting Director of the Centre of Excellence for Research and Treatment of Bipolar Disorder, to share his knowledge about this mental illness: APA: What’s bipolar disorder and how is it different from the general mood swings that many people experience? Bipolar disorder is a condition that leads to extreme changes in mood, energy, and sleep. With all of these things, people will experience ups and downs in everyday life. What sets bipolar 16

JUNE 2013

disorder apart is that the swings happen with more frequency and intensity than developmentally appropriate and they last much longer. The extremes also start to cause problems at school, home, with friends, or other important areas in the person’s life. There’s no sharp dividing line that separates bipolar disorder from ordinary changes in energy and mood. It’s the combination of extremity and impairment that signals when it has become a problem. Interestingly, although we have long thought of bipolar disorder as a mood disorder, we’re learning that focusing on shifts in energy may be a more accurate way of detecting episodes of the illness. The American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders defines four different types of bipolar disorder: Bipolar I, where the person has had a manic episode at least once in their lives; Bipolar II, where the person becomes seriously

depressed, but also has a history of hypomania (a milder mania); Cyclothymic Disorder, where the person has years of depressive and hypomanic symptoms without developing a full mania or depression; and Bipolar ‘not otherwise specified’, for situations that don’t fit into any of the other three definitions. APA: Is bipolar disorder on the rise or does it just seem that way because of frequent media coverage? Changes in the actual rate are likely to be in the small to medium range, whereas changes in clinical diagnosis and media attention are huge. Several studies have found that the rate of clinical diagnoses of bipolar disorder has increased markedly over the last 20 years, especially in children and teenagers. The media often present these as percentage increases, which exaggerates the appearance of change because the current generation of practitioners weren’t trained to look systematically

Q&A with Eric Youngstrom, PhD, on bipolar disorder…

APA: How prevalent is bipolar disorder? Is it more common among certain demographic or geographic groups? The meta-analysis found that bipolar disorders in children and teens are about half as common in adults, affecting 2% of the general population around the world (compared to 4% for bipolar in adults, or 6-8% for depression in teens). This makes bipolar about a third as common as depression and less than half as common as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in youths, but about twice as common as autistic spectrum disorders. Many longitudinal studies suggest that roughly a third of all depressions have a bipolar course when followed over time. There’s no good evidence that it’s more common in some demographic groups than others, although ethnic minorities with bipolar disorder are likely to be misdiagnosed with schizophrenia, conduct disorder, or antisocial behaviour instead. Women are more likely to be diagnosed with Bipolar II, but there’s no evidence of a gender linkage. It’s more likely that women seek help more often for depression, so clinicians see more women with Bipolar II. Internationally, bipolar disorder appears equally common among

youths in the USA as in the rest of the world. In adults, rates of bipolar disorder may be lower in Asia than in the USA, but it’s hard to tell whether this is due to protective factors such as lower rates of obesity or higher fish consumption, versus greater social stigma preventing people from acknowledging problems and seeking help. APA: What causes bipolar disorder? Are there differences in how the disorder affects children, adolescents, and adults? Bipolar disorder is caused by a combination of biological and environmental factors. Genes play a major role, but genes aren’t enough by themselves to cause bipolar disorder. Identical twins share 100% of the same genes, but if one twin has bipolar disorder, the other twin doesn’t develop bipolar 20% or more of the time. At this point, research has identified lots of genes that each contribute a little bit of risk for bipolar disorder. Diet may play an important role as well. Stress and trauma increase risk, as do intense emotional conflicts in families. Most of the risk factors for bipolar disorder also increase the odds of developing other conditions such as anxiety or attention problems, which is probably why we see such high rates of co-occurrence among these disorders. Interestingly, the risk factors appear to be the same for children, adolescents, and adults, which gives us more confidence that we’re dealing with the same condition. The biggest way that the illness seems to change with age is that older individuals are more likely to experience depression and less likely to have mania, whereas in childhood it’s more mania or a mixture of high energy with negative mood. APA: What are the most effective treatments for the disorder?

Dr. Eric A. Youngstrom

for bipolar disorder in youths. When something is rarely or never diagnosed and then starts to be recognized, the change in the rates can be misleading - 40 times more than something very small is still a small rate. A recent meta-analysis found no sign that the rates were increasing over the last 20 years. However, some of the risk factors associated with the disorder, such as obesity, changes in diet, disruption of sleep, and earlier onset of puberty, definitely have been increasing over the last few decades, so we can’t rule out the possibility that there’s an increase in bipolar disorder. The increase is just much smaller than the changes in attention by the media and clinicians.

The best treatments for bipolar disorder focus on smoothing out the highs and lows in mood and energy. There are several different psychotherapies that have promising results. These include cognitive behavioural therapy to pay attention to automatic positive thoughts as potential triggers for hypomania or mania; dialectical behaviour therapy for improving emotion regulation; psychoeducational therapy to understand triggers and ways of managing the illness; family-focused therapy to improve communication and reduce intense emotional conflict; and interpersonal social rhythm therapy that emphasizes regular sleep and activity patterns. When the mood and energy become extreme, reaching the severity of a full-blown mania or depression, then medication is important in reducing the symptoms to a level where therapy and everyday functioning become possible. Therapy has a lot of promise as a way of preventing progression of the disorder, delaying relapse, and improving functioning in between episodes. Many incredibly talented and productive people have successfully dealt with bipolar disorder, so a goal of treatment should not just be symptom reduction, but helping the person to make the most of their gifts and abilities. www.dazzle-magazine.com

Growing Your Child’s Confidence Tips to encourage and help boost your child’s growing confidence…

Though many children stay dry at night by age five, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry found that bedwetting remains an issue in about 15% of children aged four and up. Parents experiencing this issue with their child may think of bedwetting as an occasional occurrence or accident, instead of something their child cannot control. It’s important to understand that bedwetting is not the child’s fault and will likely resolve in time. Keeping a positive attitude

18

JUNE 2013

and providing proper support from family is very important to the child during this time. Children may feel embarrassed and down on themselves, especially during the ages when they’re trying new things and looking to grow their confidence. Parents should be patient while dealing with their child’s bedwetting. It’s important to keep the conversations positive and avoid displaying any frustration. If a child is afraid to make their parent mad, it can actually worsen a bedwetting problem. Dr. Jennifer Trachtenberg is a nationally renowned parenting expert, boardcertified paediatrician, and has practiced paediatric and adolescent medicine for more than 15 years. She’s also a mother of three. She offers some tips and advice for parents dealing with bedwetting: Tip 1: Set The Scene For Success Parents can set the scene for their child to ease into a good night’s sleep, both at home and during summer vacation travel. Try to provide support and encouragement to your child as he or she gets ready

for bed, incorporating fun ideas such as story time and a trip to the bathroom as part of the routine. A new bedwetting choice, GoodNites Bed Mats, offers night-time protection for your child, while helping to boost their confidence by getting them involved in their nighttime protection routine in three simple steps. Because they’re disposable, they’re convenient to bring along on summertime trips. Simply help the child place the mat on top of their fitted sheet, peel the adhesive strips off the corners and smooth down to help the child feel empowered and protected. Tip 2: Deal With Setbacks Positively Bedwetting setbacks are to be expected. If your child wants to talk about it, help keep confidence up by reassuring him or her that this is something he or she can’t control. Remain an optimist and emphasize to your child how well they have been doing on other things, such as helping to clean their room or helping set the table for dinner, rather than dwell on the accident. Tip 3: Reduce Stress And Anxiety

Article: Brandpoint.com. Image: Shutterstock.com.

Your growing child needs love and attention to help build confidence to continue to try and succeed at new things. From learning how to read, preparing for summer camp to being able to ride their first two-wheel bike, it’s the positivity from Mom and Dad that keeps kids striving for more. Sometimes kids transition with ease to the next stage in development, and other times may experience a few bumps in the road prolonging transition. One of those areas where a child might need an extra boost of confidence is when they are experiencing an issue with wetting the bed at night.

Stress and anxiety may result in bedwetting. If you’re concerned that traveling for summer vacation could cause some anxiety for your child, help keep your child calm by reminding them how special and proud of them you are for everything they do, helping to keep

bladder at bedtime, but this can also cause dehydration if fluids are limited for a long period of time. Instead of limiting fluids completely, offer ice chips so your child stays hydrated, but doesn’t overwhelm his or her bladder. Tip 5: Help Set His Body

Even for older children, bedwetting will cease in

their attitude up and feeling confident.

Alarm Carry your child off to the bathroom while he’s sleeping at around the same time every night, at your bedtime. This will help set his body’s alarm to wake up at night to go to the bathroom and,

time. Be patient, positive, and supportive, and you and your child will make progress you can both be proud of. To find more information on bedwetting or to find advice and tools, visit www.goodnites.com.

Tip 4: Limit Liquids, But Don’t Eliminate It’s easy for parents to restrict liquids after dinner in order to help their child avoid a full

Husbands who do more traditionally female housework have less sex according to a new study… Married men who spend more time doing traditionally female household tasks, including cooking, cleaning, and shopping, report having less sex than husbands who don’t do as much, according to a new study in the February 13 issue of the American Sociological Review. “Our findings suggest the importance of socialized gender roles for sexual frequency in heterosexual marriage,” said Sabino Kornrich, the study’s lead

20

JUNE 2013

author and a junior researcher at the Centre for Advanced Studies at the Juan March Institute in Madrid. “Couples in which men participate more in housework typically done by women report having sex less frequently. Similarly, couples in which men participate more in traditionally masculine tasks such as yard work, paying bills, and auto maintenance, report higher sexual frequency.” The study, ‘Egalitarianism, Housework, and Sexual Frequency in Marriage’,

which considers heterosexual married couples in the United States, relies on nationally representative data from the National Survey of Families and Households. Men in the study reported having had sex an average of 5.2 times in the month prior to the survey while women reported 5.6 times on average. But, both men and women in couples with more gender-traditional divisions of household labour reported having had more sex than those with more egalitarian divisions.

Relationships

“The results suggest the existence of a gendered set of sexual scripts, in which the traditional performance and display of gender is important for creation of sexual desire and performance of sexual activity,” said Kornrich, who co-authored the study with two University of Washington researchers, Julie Brines, an associate professor of sociology, and Katrina Leupp, a doctoral candidate in sociology. The researchers also investigated, and ultimately ruled out, a number of other possible explanations for their findings. For example, they explored the possibility that couples with more traditional divisions of labour had more sex because the husbands in those relationships were sexually coercive. “Wives’ reported satisfaction with their sex life has the same relationship to men’s participation in household labour as sexual frequency,” Kornrich said. “Had satisfaction with sex been low, but frequency high, it might have suggested coercion. However, we didn’t find that.”

In addition, the researchers found that happiness, religion, gender ideology, and a range of other variables did not affect the relationship between more traditional divisions of labour and more frequent sexual activity. “The importance of gender has declined over time, but it continues to exert a strong influence over individual behaviours, including sexual frequency within marriage,” Kornrich said. But, for husbands who might see the study as justification for not cooking, cleaning, shopping, or performing other traditionally female household tasks, Kornrich issued a warning. “Men who refuse to help around the house could increase conflict in their marriage and lower their wives’ marital satisfaction,” he said. “Earlier research has found that women’s marital satisfaction is indeed linked to men’s participation in overall household labour, which encompasses tasks traditionally done by both men and women.”

Bedazzled Friendships

The Twists & Turns Of Dad & Daughter Sports and other shared activities are game changers for dad-daughter relationships…

“This is the masculine style of building closeness, called closeness in the doing, whereas the feminine orientation is talking, closeness in the dialogue,” said Mark T. Morman, Ph.D., a professor of communication in Baylor’s College of Arts & Sciences. An article about the findings by Morman and former Baylor graduate student Elizabeth Barrett is published in the Journal of Human Communication. When asked what key experiences changed closeness in their relationships, fathers and daughters who were study participants mentioned events typical of those that help cement masculine friendships. Morman noted that the study is qualitative - based on written responses by participants rather than by a statistical analysis. But it reveals meaningful markers of relationship changes, regardless of whether they became closer or more distant, he said. The 43 fathers and 43 daughters in the study weren’t related to one another but were asked

22

JUNE 2013

to pinpoint in writing a crucial moment of change in their own father-daughter relationships. Daughters in the study were required to be at least age 22, while fathers ranged from 45 to 70. Adoptive and step-family relationships were among those included. “These turning points were independent of some type of family history,” Morman said. Most frequently mentioned of 14 relationship changes by daughters were engaging activities with their fathers, their marriages, and physical distance from their fathers. Fathers most frequently mentioned joint activities, a daughter’s marriage, and the beginning of a daughter’s dating. Other pivotal times noted by both fathers and/or daughters in the study were adolescence, a family crisis, parents’ divorce, a daughter’s financial independence, giving birth, entering elementary school, high school graduation, a daughter’s developing outside friendships, a daughter’s maturation/ beginning a friendship with her father, and poor decisions on a daughter’s part.

Daughters On Turning Points Shared Activities: Sports, working together and

vacationing together were the shared activities most frequently mentioned. Many daughters said they became closer to their fathers when they began to play a sport, an intimacy in which the father is the “primary playmate” as daughters learn to compete, take risks, and stand up for themselves. Sports gave daughters a chance to be the centre of their dad’s attention. “It made me feel really important,” one woman wrote. Another said, “I used to love it when my dad would take off work to come coach my softball team.” Working together was another life-changing shared activity. “Growing up, I didn’t see much of my dad because he was at the office,” one daughter wrote. “But through working together, now I know him on so many different levels.” A third shared activity was vacationing, several daughters said. “The first time I really talked with my dad, I was 6 years old. We took a road trip together and talked about everything,” one woman wrote. Marriage: A daughter’s marriage was the second most frequently reported turning point - sometimes bringing them closer together, usually due to gaining a father’s approval of their husbands - but many

Article: Baylor University/Newswise.com.

The most frequent turning point in father-daughter relationships is shared activity, especially sports, ahead of such pivotal events as when a daughter marries or leaves home, according to a study by Baylor University researchers.

reported that the marriage distanced them somewhat because the father was no longer the protector and provider. Leaving Home: The third most mentioned shift for daughters was when they left home for the first time, often to attend college. Some felt they lost touch, others felt a strain was lifted as they had their own space and developed a friendship with their dad rather than them viewing him as a provider, adviser, and disciplinarian.

From The Fathers’ Perspective Shared Activities: Sports was the most frequently mentioned activity by fathers, with some

saying it gave them a bond their daughter did not have with her mother or siblings. Others said it opened the lines of communication to talk about other subjects. Additional activities fathers mentioned were religious functions, household projects, and teaching their daughters to drive. One father even learnt how to sing so he could be in a school talent show with his daughter. Father of the Bride: Marriage, the second most frequent turning point mentioned by fathers, was crucial, regardless of whether it strengthened or weakened the relationship. One father said, “She became dependent on her husband instead of me, and I was so

determined not to interfere to the point of driving a wedge between her husband and me.” On the flip side, one father said that being involved in his daughter’s wedding plans gave him a reason to talk to her regularly. Daughter Dating: Fathers attempted to fiercely protect their daughters during this time, worrying constantly about them, and as a whole, their closeness lessened. “She communicated more with her mother about personal matters and less with me,” one man reported. As their “little girls” grew into young women, fathers realized they could not shelter them forever and were forced to begin “letting go.”

Starting A (Creative) Business Five tips for success when starting a business…

Bruce McCain, director of career services for The Art Institute of Tampa, a branch of Miami International University of Art & Design, and Kathleen Holland, director of career services for The Art Institute of Charleston, a branch of The Art Institute of Atlanta, share five essentials they identified as success factors in starting a business:

exercise will also help identify whether there might be a smaller and important niche market where your business can focus and be profitable. “If you’re a graphic designer, will you be a generalist, offering services to all types of industries, or do you have specialized experience handling retailers that you can build on?” asks McCain. Knowing your niche will enable you to develop a consistent brand identity in every aspect of your business. The business plan also sets the goals and objectives that will guide many of your decisions.

1. Self-assess and research. It’s imperative that you’re honest with yourself and truly understand what you’re good at and what you enjoy doing. Doing a SWOT analysis (a way to analyse Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) is a great way of assessing that.

3. To incorporate or not to incorporate. Many students in creative fields are familiar with taking on freelance work while still in school. But after graduation, it’s important to formalize the business. It’s a good idea to invest in some legal and accounting advice to help you make the best decision about incorporation. There are significant advantages and disadvantages to each type of business structure.

2. Know your niche. A business plan is highly recommended to help identify both those industries with a need for your services and your competition. This

4. Develop a stream of business. New business owners often envision being successful within a short period of time. Developing and building a business from

the ground up takes time, energy, and hard work, but it can be very rewarding. The industry research you did for your business plan will come in handy in determining what a realistic rate of growth means for your industry and area. 5. Network, network, network. “I can’t stress enough the importance of networking,” says Holland. Networking may be your only means of marketing for quite some time - it is important to get in front of as many people as possible and give them your ‘elevator pitch’ (a quick story about your business that you can say in 90 seconds or less). When meeting each person, make sure you take his or her business card; this comes in handy when writing a “nice to meet you” note the next day. “Yes, you should write a quick note to each person you meet. In this note, you should mention where you met them, refer to your conversation, and remind them what your business does and how it can be helpful to them,” Holland says. It takes a lot of hard work to be a creative business owner and there are no shortcuts to success. So put in the time to reap the rewards.

Many graduates in creative fields like graphic design, interior design, or web design are opting to start their own businesses. This is because recent figures show only a slight reduction in the unemployment rate, and job growth is at its lowest in six months. So, how can you make your business a success?

Too Much Of A Good Thing In global trade, too much of a good thing can be a bad thing; a multitude of trade products is good for a country - up to a point…

The researchers discovered that interaction between products plays an important role in economic growth. In the early stages of product development, these synergies allow for a quick growth rate. Specialization in a certain area, such as electronics, establishes the base for similar products to be developed and exported.

episode in 1985, and from our data we can examine Ireland’s country-level product specialization before and after the growth acceleration period,” he said. Ireland experienced increases in its chemical industry, manufactured goods, machinery and transportation and commercial manufacturing, all of which overlapped with food and animal production and crude materials. The researchers believe the inter-related nature of these industries played a key role in Ireland developing new products and expanding its export base.

Raja Kali and Javier Reyes, Associate Professors in the Sam M. Walton College of Business; Josh McGee, VP of Public Accountability at the Laura and John Arnold Foundation and Walton College doctoral graduate of economics; and Stuart Shirrell, a former Bodenhamer Fellow and 2011 magna cum laude graduate of the U of A, performed the study.

A contrasting example is Greece, which had a high level of interaction within the manufactured goods industry, did not expand this interaction into other high-density industries. As a result, over the ten-year period studied, 1980-1990, the country experienced a relative decrease in synergies between its export products. While interrelatedness between products can help a country expand its economy, it can also cause an adverse effect, the researchers found. “Essentially, one could say that too much of a good thing makes you fat and happy, and that ultimately is not so good for a country,” Kali said.

Kali and his colleagues use Ireland as an example of this growth pattern. “We know that Ireland experienced a trade and economic growth acceleration

The researchers developed a way of measuring density at the product and country level. Product density is the number of links between a single product

and the other products in a country’s export set, divided by the total number of links between that product and every other product, regardless of whether it is in the country’s product set or not. Country density is computed by weighting the density of each product that a country exports. As density increases, “inertia” becomes stronger, making the jump to new products more difficult. An increase in network proximity more proportionate than product density is required to maintain growth acceleration. The researchers defined product space as the relatedness between products in global trade. This space can be thought of as a network in which each product represents a node, and the relationships between them represent the linkages. In their study, each country’s network was superimposed on the country’s specialization pattern. The information allowed the researchers to measure the density of the links and to develop a measure of the proximity of the country’s specialization to the products themselves. The proximity of the products indicated how easily a country could move from its current specialization to new products. The researchers’ study was published in the Journal of Development Economics. The study is available online at www.Sciencedirect.com.

Researchers at the University of Arkansas examined the relationship between products in global trade and the characteristics of a country’s product specialization pattern and discovered that having a multitude of similar products can be beneficial to growth - up to a point, after which the benefit declines.

Seasonal Asthma: e c n a is u N A n a h T e Mor Learn to control and manage your asthma during allergy season…

“We know that most asthmatics, more than half actually, don’t take their asthma medication properly, and that’s leaving their condition uncontrolled and increasing their risk for an ER visit due to an asthma attack,” says Paul Reyes, Express Scripts pharmacist and host of the Ask the Pharmacist radio series. “The biggest mistake asthma patients make is stopping their therapy when they feel better, not realizing that their condition will worsen if they don’t use their mediation as prescribed.” Asthma is a chronic

28

JUNE 2013

condition caused by inflammation in the airways and lungs that makes it difficult to breathe. Asthma causes recurring periods of wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing, which often occurs at night or early in the morning. Many factors can inflame an asthma patient’s airways, including infections, pollutants, weather changes, and external allergens such as pollen, pet dander, cigarette smoke, or dust mites. Studies show that 70-80% of asthma patients have seasonal allergies, thus increasing their risk for an asthma attack during peak allergy season. Asthma affects people of all ages, but it most often starts during childhood. Of the 25 million Americans who have asthma, 7 million are children, with lower income children being at particularly high risk. A number of environmental factors, including living in an urban area, have been shown to contribute to the prevalence of asthma. Reyes offers some important tips for preventing and controlling asthma attacks: Know The Triggers: Keep a journal of substances that

cause symptoms, or ask your doctor about a test to discover which allergens affect you. Knowing what your triggers are and, whenever possible, avoiding them, can reduce symptoms and risk of an attack. If seasonal allergens are affecting you, talk to your doctor about adding a seasonal allergy medication to your asthma therapy regimen. Understand Your Therapy: Asthma therapy can be complicated and difficult to maintain, and often includes different types of mediations each with unique instructions. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you’re not sure how to use your medications. They can help you understand how medications work, and if you use an inhaler, how to use it properly. Also, keep your child informed about the basics of his or her condition and work with the child to make sure he or she knows how to use the medication and what should be done in the event of an emergency. Take As Directed: Follow the instructions provided by your doctor or pharmacist and do not stop therapy without consulting your physician first. If you’re feeling better and are not

The sun is shining, flowers are blooming, and pollen counts are soaring - and that means millions of people are dealing with the sneezing and wheezing that comes with seasonal allergies. While allergies are sometimes considered an uncomfortable nuisance, for the millions of people with asthma, seasonal allergies can trigger serious attacks that if not managed properly could lead to a visit to the ER. In fact, asthma is responsible for half a million hospitalizations in the US each year - 60% of which are caused by patients not taking their medication as prescribed.

experiencing symptoms, that means your medication is working and you need to continue using it as prescribed. Set reminders so you don’t forget to take your medication. If a home-delivery pharmacy is an option, this can help ensure an adequate supply of medication is always on hand. Care For Kids: If your

children are enrolled in school or day-care, make sure their caregivers are provided with detailed instructions on how your children’s asthma medication works and when they need to take it. If your child spends time away from home with family or friends, make sure that he or she continues to take the medication as prescribed. Asthma symptoms often

become more pronounced in the early morning or late at night, so consistency will help your child stay on track with his or her medications and reduce the risk of an attack. For more resources and information, visit Express Scripts’ Healthcare Insights blog at www.lab.express-scripts. com.

Health Dilemmas

I thought heart attacks happen all of a sudden and I just heard that they could take weeks to develop. I’m confused! Which is it? Mirna, Jeddah You must be confusing heart attacks and cardiac arrest Mirna; there’s a difference. Too often, people use “sudden cardiac arrest” and “heart attack” interchangeably, but they shouldn’t. A heart attack is when blood flow to the heart is blocked, and sudden cardiac arrest is when the heart malfunctions and suddenly stops beating unexpectedly. A heart attack is a circulation problem, and sudden cardiac arrest is an electrical problem. Here are a few more facts that may be healthy to know from the American Heart Association:

Ask Nisrine

What’s a heart attack? A heart attack occurs when a blocked artery keeps oxygen-rich blood from reaching a section of the heart. If the blocked artery is not reopened quickly, the part of the heart normally nourished by that artery begins to die. The longer a person goes without treatment, the greater the damage. Symptoms of a heart attack may be immediate and intense. More often, though, symptoms start slowly and persist for hours, days, or even weeks before the heart attack. The heart usually doesn’t stop beating during a heart attack. Symptoms can differ in men and women. What’s cardiac arrest? Sudden cardiac arrest often occurs without warning. It’s triggered by an electrical malfunction in the heart that causes an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia). With its pumping action disrupted, the heart cannot send blood to the brain, lungs, and other organs. Seconds later, a person loses consciousness and has no pulse. Death occurs within minutes if the victim does not receive treatment.

Email Nisrine Kreidieh at: nisrine@dazzlemagazine.com or by post to the Dazzle KSA office.

What’s the link? These two distinct heart conditions are linked. Sudden cardiac arrest can occur after a heart attack or during recovery. Heart attacks increase the risk for sudden cardiac arrest. Most heart attacks don’t lead to sudden cardiac arrest but when sudden cardiac arrest occurs, heart attack is a common cause. Other heart conditions may also disrupt the heart’s rhythm and lead to sudden cardiac arrest. These include a thickened heart muscle (cardiomyopathy), heart failure, and arrhythmias, particularly ventricular fibrillation and long QT syndrome.

Learn More: You can find further information about how to help save a life with CPR at www.heart.org/CPR. Fast action can save lives: It’s a good idea to know what to do if someone experiences a heart attack or cardiac arrest.

30

JUNE 2013

Answer: American Heart Association/NAPS.

What To Do: Sudden Cardiac Arrest Cardiac arrest is reversible in most victims if it’s treated within a few minutes. First, call for emergency medical services. Then use an automated external defibrillator (AED) if one is available. Begin CPR immediately and continue until professional emergency medical services arrive. If two people are available to help, one should begin CPR immediately while the other calls 9-1-1 and finds an AED. Sudden cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death - nearly 360,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur annually in the United States. By performing immediate CPR, you can double or even triple a victim’s chance of survival.

Ask Nisrine

What To Do: Heart Attack Even if you’re not sure it’s a heart attack, don’t wait more than five minutes to call the emergency response number. Every minute matters. It’s best to call EMS to get to the emergency room right away. Emergency medical services staff can begin treatment when they arrive - up to an hour sooner than if someone gets to the hospital by car. EMS staff are also trained to revive someone whose heart has stopped. Patients with chest pain who arrive by ambulance may get faster treatment at the hospital, too.

Skincare for men doesn’t have to take a lot of time or “sissy” products. Good skincare can help men retain a youthful appearance while benefitting their general good health, writes J. E. Davidson…

A good skincare routine will improve the way you look and feel. The skin is the body’s largest organ, and the primary part of our immune system that protects us from environmental pollution and the effects of heat, cold, sun, and wind. It regulates the body temperature, insulates internal organs, helps our internal organs expel excess waste products, and synthesizes Vitamins B and D. Male skin tends to be thicker and oiler than female skin, with larger pores and less tendency to wrinkle until later in life. Men often don’t get fine wrinkles like woman, but larger creases and folds in the skin. Until recently, most men regarded a skincare routine as ‘sissy stuff’, but many manufacturers of skincare products are developing products formulated especially for the male skin. Just like women, men have different skin types, oily, dry,

32

JUNE 2013

or a combination, and it can be confusing trying to choose from the array of products available. A dermatologist or trained skincare professional should be able to help you choose the right products for your skin type. Shaving is one area where many men make mistakes that can damage their skin. Many shave against the grain for the closest shave, but this method can roughen the skin and contribute to ingrown hairs and subsequent infections. Shaving with the grain will reduce the chance of ingrown hair and keep the skin smoother. For special occasions, when you want a particularly close shave, shave with the grain first to remove most of the hair and then shave against the grain. Just don’t do it too often! Shave after showering, while the skin is still moist and the whiskers are softened, and lather well. Rinse the razor often while shaving; debris caught between the blades contributes to nicking. “Manly” soaps like Irish Spring, and most other bar soaps, are really detergents and are bad for the skin. Use a non-drying soap or soap substitute to wash the face. Once or twice a week, use an exfoliant after cleansing your face. As dead skin cells accumulate on the surface, they trap oil and dirt, which contribute to rough skin and blemishes. Removing these dead cells allow fresh, new skin cells to come to

the surface and you will have smoother, clearer skin. Chemical exfoliants, in cream or lotion form, contain AHA (alpha-hydroxy acid), BHA (bethydroxy acid), or Vitamin A. These chemicals may produce a slightly tingly sensation, or irritate sensitive skin. Physical exfoliants such as a Loofah sponge or facial scrubs containing tiny bits of grit (usually ground almond or walnut shells) can also remove dead skin cells and leave a fresher, younger appearance. Be careful not to over-abrade, which can also cause redness and irritation. Poor skincare can aggravate acne, but dirty skin and poor diet aren’t always to blame for pimples. Hormonal changes or certain medications may contribute to the problem. As tempting as it is, don’t squeeze a pimple! This can spread the oils beneath the skin, encouraging more acne, and cause infection and scarring. OTC products containing benzoyl peroxide can help dry up pimples quickly, but can be drying to the surrounding skin, so use them sparingly and only on the zit itself. Otherwise, just grin and bear it and hope the thing goes away soon! Severe cases of acne should be treated by a dermatologist. After cleansing the face and shaving apply an all-natural aftershave or herbal toner to

Article: J. E. Davidson/Constant-Content.com.

For most of history, men’s skincare routines consisted of washing, shaving, and splashing on aftershave. This newest generation of men is learning that a good skincare routine can preserve their youthfulness, reduce acne outbreaks and ingrown hairs, and promote general good health. First impressions can be extremely important, especially in the business arena and one’s social life, and are often based on physical appearance.

close pores and remove any leftover residue. Don’t use products with an alcohol base, which can be drying to the skin and has no real benefit except a slight astringent quality. Apply a moisturizer after the toner. Some moisturizing products contain glycolic acid, which reduces the effects of aging. Avoid products with a mineral oil or petroleum base, which can clog pores. Those with sensitive skin may want to use fragrance-free skincare products. It’s usually the

fragrance that irritates the skin. No good article on skincare will neglect to mention the sun’s effect on our skin. Many signs of aging including wrinkles, splotches, brown spots, rough skin, and broken blood vessels can be blamed on overexposure to the sun. Use a sunblock on your face as well as on the rest of your body, and wear a hat when outdoors. Some moisturizers are available that contain sunblock, so you don’t have to spend

money on two different products. The closer a part of our body is to the sun, the more UV radiation it receives, leaving the face and neck particularly vulnerable to skin cancers. A good skin-care routine doesn’t mean you have to spend a lot of time in front of a mirror! The few minutes it takes each morning can make a difference, and help you to retain a youthful appearance and healthy skin function!

Beauty Dilemmas

I know they keep talking about sun protection, but is it really that important!? And what do I do about it if it is? Rasha, Jeddah

Yes, absolutely! Protecting your skin from the sun is a 365 day-a-year job! Summer is officially here, and all the sun exposure from sunny days at the beach, playing outdoor sports, or soaking up the rays could damage your skin, forming dark brown spots that make your skin look dull and lacklustre. Even sun exposure during the winter months can harm your skin. UVA rays, called the rays of aging, are everywhere and can penetrate even on cloudy days and through glass windows in your home or car. These rays are responsible for damage like wrinkles, brown spots, and skin cancer. Sun damage is cumulative and begins in childhood, so protecting from the early ages - babies too - with sun protection or clothing is an important step!

Ask Sonja

If you don’t routinely use sunscreen, your skin is at risk for premature aging, and also for developing skin cancer, especially melanoma, the deadliest form. The other consequences that may not be life threatening include wrinkles, an uneven complexion, and discoloration and dark spots on the face, chest, and hands. Be kind to your skin: “Using adequate sunscreen is a vital daily component for all skin types to guard against deadly skin cancer and the ravaging effects of UVA/ UVB exposure on your skin,” says Washington D.C. dermatologist Cheryl Burgess. “Everyone is susceptible to sunburn and skin cancer, even skin of colour. There’s no such thing as a safe tan - unless it comes out of a bottle or tube of self-tanner.” She recommends that you apply broad-spectrum sunscreen SPF 30 that protects against UVA and UVB rays every two hours, and reapply after swimming or sweating. Make this step part of your daily morning regimen year round by applying your sunscreen under makeup.

The elure system includes a gentle facial cleanser that neutralizes the pH to prep the skin, a two pump, easy-to-use lotion, and a rich moisturizing night cream. In several clinical studies, elure produced a brighter and more even skin tone for most subjects in as little as 28 days. Dermatologists advise their patients to always use an SPF30 during the day in addition to elure. “Protect your skin now to avoid unwanted dark spots on your skin later. But if you do develop areas of discoloration, elure may be an ideal therapy for you,” Burgess says.

Ask Sonja

Fortunately, new formulations exist that are effective alternatives to invasive procedures and don’t contain hydroquinone. “One of the newest options is the elure Advanced Brightening System from Syneron Medical,” says Greg Nikolaidis, a dermatologist at Westlake Dermatology in Austin, Texas. “These products are clinically proven to break up discoloration in the skin. They contain a powerful ingredient called Melanozyme, a natural enzyme derived from a tree mushroom that reduces unsightly discoloration found on the surface of the skin, without irritation. Another benefit of elure is that it’s safe for all skin types without the risk of side effects that can be caused by other topical products traditionally used to treat sun damaged skin.”

sonja@dazzle-magazine.com

Reversing The Damage Even if you religiously protect your skin now, past damage can rear its ugly head in the form of mottled hyperpigmentation like sunspots and brown patches. Remember that the groundwork for this discoloration was laid years ago by sun exposure and environmental factors. Invasive procedures like lasers or light based treatments and deep peels can reduce the appearance of these spots, but these treatments are expensive and often require some downtime. Skin brightening regimens available through dermatologists or plastic surgeons can often be the first line of treatment help to reduce the appearance of dull, damaged, and pigmented skin. Traditionally, the active ingredient in skin lighteners has been hydroquinone, which can cause a whole host of unwanted effects such as photosensitivity and dark blue or black-pigmented lesions.

Talking Travel Tech Hitting the road? Apps to pack to avoid summer brain drain…

In fact, American families take more than 100 million leisure trips a year and the average family juggles up to six devices, ranging from smartphones to tablets to laptops. It’s no surprise that summer is the most popular family

travel time, and for many kids the school break can result in a measurable brain drain. Studies show students lose about a month of learning during the summer break. Concerned parents can dial up the learning quotient with a few well-packed apps that keep little ones engaged whether traveling far or settling in for a summer staycation. With more than 300 new apps unveiled every day, finding the right-sized app for your child can

be daunting. Skip the exhausting mind-meld. Smart parents use trusted sites like Common Sense Media to search for apps by age, theme, and ratings, or pop onto a family-friendly network like Fingerprint to peruse a library of apps that parents approve and kids love. By doing a little homework, parents can find an app for every kind of kid - world traveller, animal lover, nature explorer, or inquisitive pre-schooler.

For Your Nifty Nature Explorer For nature explorers, travel time can be tortuous. Keep them busy with Minuscule - a thrilling racing app that follows the story of a mischievous ladybug, an angry fly, and an army of red ants through four life-like minuscule worlds. This app (for kids 6+) is a sure-fire backseat boredom buster. Plus, the kids will be ready to hit the hiking trail and “wow” you with insect fun facts after a few games.

For Your Amazing Animal Lover Have a little one with a soft spot for animals? Indulge their pet passion with an app that stars two English bulldogs in the vibrantly animated storybook Lola & Lucy’s Big Adventures. With 29 interactive pages, 17 mini games, and more than 300 interactive surprises, Lola & Lucy’s Big Adventure (for kids 4+) promotes reading readiness, geography know-how, and even fun trivia related to dog breeds.

Warm weather and sunshine are putting families across the country in vacation-planning mode. Whether traveling by train, plane, or automobile, mobile devices are typically the first thing parents and kids pack.

For Your Budding World Traveller Learning a second language at a young age is linked to higher test scores, greater confidence, and enhanced critical thinking skills. In fact, mobile apps are one of the easiest (and most accessible) ways for kids to learn a new language any time, any place. For example, the Kids Learn Mandarin app takes kids (ages 3 to 8) on a magical journey through 12 playgrounds with nearly 100 interactive games where kids learn to read, speak, and write 240 Mandarin words.

For Your Inquisitive Pre-Schooler Playful pre-schoolers love mobile devices and this is where pre-packing pays off. Choose a couple of new app titles staring a character your pre-schooler loves (Sid the Science Kid, Caillou, VeggieTales) and download before you leave. Many of the preschool apps are both fun and educational, including Franklin Talk & Playset (for ages 3 to 6), which transports kids into the woodland world of Franklin & Friends to solve puzzles, perfect rhyming skills, practice shape recognition, and even talk to Franklin.

While parents can download new apps on the go, it’s definitely worth doing your homework and downloading a few fan favourites

before you depart. For the cost of a couple Frappuccino’s, parents can buy a handful of premium apps that ensure the summer

journey is both entertaining and educational for their kids - and maybe even a bit more harmonious too.

One Direction’s

Find out what the One Direction boys miss when they are away from home with VisitBritain’s guide to following in their footsteps in London and in the UK… 1. On 23 July 2010, One Direction were put together as a band for the first time at Wembley Arena, where they qualified for the ‘groups’ category of the X Factor. It’s where their phenomenal journey began, so the famous music venue holds a special place in the boy’s hearts and is a must-visit for any music fan: artists from The Beatles and Bob Dylan to the Spice Girls and Madonna have performed there. Catch the X Factor Live at Wembley to talent-spot the next hot act. 2. Zayn Malik comes from Bradford, home to the nations favourite dish: curry. Visit the best curry houses in Zayn’s home city like the International Tandoori Restaurant in The West End or Akbar’s Balti Restaurant on Leeds Road. 3. Zayn is dating Perrie Edwards from Brit girl group Little Mix. The couple were recently spotted in Perrie’s home city of Newcastle, one of Britain’s hotspots for clubbing by night and shopping

by day. With over 200 pubs and some of the best clubs in the country, the pair can dance till dawn, but not before they shop till they drop at Europe’s biggest indoor mall the Metrocentre in Gateshead or maybe more refined Jesmond, known as the ‘Notting Hill of the North’, with lots of cute one-off boutiques and cafes. 4. Harry Styles grew up listening to the music of The Beatles, introduced to him by his father. No doubt Harry will have explored Beatles Britain to find out about another British band that shot to stardom and invaded the worldwide music scene. The best place to head to is Liverpool, the Fab Four’s home city where you can catch a gig at The Cavern Club where today’s upcoming bands often play, or else make your way to Abbey Road in London and recreate their famous street crossing. 5. Wanna party like the 1D boys? The group have been seen out and about at London’s Mahiki,

Aura, and Funky Buddha. Although they’ve dined at hot new Soho Mexican La Bodega Negra, the boys are just as happy at Nando’s or can be spotted having a sneaky ice-cream fix at Milkshake City where they’ve even got their own flavour! 6. Before he auditioned for X Factor, Louis Tomlinson performed as Danny Zuko in Grease at school and says it gave him the confidence to try out for the programme. London’s West End has great shows for music fans like We Will Rock You based on the band Queen and Viva Forever - the new musical about the Spice Girls. How long until One Direction’s story is taken to the stage? 7. Harry Styles bought a house in London’s Primrose Hill earlier this year, joining other celebrities like supermodel Kate Moss (who favours local cupcake shop the Primrose Bakery) and celebrity chef Jamie Oliver in the tranquil North London neighbourhood. not hard to see why - the hill itself is in the capital’s beautiful Regent’s Park, with edgy Camden to the east for a live music fix, plenty of cute neighbourhood restaurants and pubs to visit as well as the ZSL London Zoo right in the park - the perfect spot for Harry to take a first date! 8. Harry originally comes from a village in Cheshire, in the North of England, and celebrated his 18th birthday in the nearest big city to his hometown: Manchester. 9. Speaking of football, Louis Tomlinson is a huge fan of the game and recently played a football match for charity in his hometown Doncaster in South Yorkshire and of course his besties from the band were there to support and cheer him on. Bigger football clubs like Manchester United and Arsenal offer stadium tours, a great way to find out more about your favourite club and life behind the scenes. Also recently opened is The National Football Museum in Manchester, a free attraction that shows you everything you need to know about football - you

Before he was famous, Liam Payne gave a live performance at a Wolverhampton Wanderers game to an audience of 26,000; when the group was asked to perform at the London 2012 Olympic closing ceremony it was to a somewhat bigger crowd! The boys are in their element on stage in front of their fans, and played at a number of UK festivals last summer (summer 2012). Libra September 24 - October 23

The planet in charge of good luck, prosperity, abundance, and joy moves into your professional success sector this month! And he and a small handful of other planets take turns connecting nicely with your work and wealth sectors so that you’re able to focus on achieving your financial, professional, and leadership goals. You still have a partner or rival that’s ticked off about things, but your career is doing so well that you might not give it too much thought. Scorpio October 24 - November 22 You’re entering a time of your life when you’re more interested in learning, exploring, and/ or traveling. You might want to relocate to somewhere new. Most of the time, you’re enjoying these ideas, but there will be times when your co-workers, job duties, family, and/or community are clashing with your desire to be open-minded and globally aware. These people and situations might annoy you, but they’re not likely to stop you from setting out on some kind of literal or figurative journey. Sagittarius November 23 - December 21 The three emotional centres of the zodiac are found in the fourth, eighth, and twelfth houses. They govern our need for security, trust, and secrets. Our homes, love lives, and some financial elements are also governed by them. For you, they’re all blending together this month to bring you emotional, financial, romantic, residential, and psychological healing and personal growth. This is a great time for literally and figuratively “getting your house in order” so that you can feel safe and secure. Capricorn December 22 - January 20 A handful of planets and the planet of good luck and joy are in your chart area of partnerships. Both of your other people-oriented sectors are helping and encouraging you to either find a fascinating new partner or they’re helping you and a pre-existing partner to socialize. This is a great time for the two of you to get more involved within your communities and consider mixing business with pleasure. You have some excellent financial and business savvy planets helping you this month. Aquarius January 21 - February 19 Your professional life feels chaotic this month. There are times when you have some strong positive energy promoting your financial and professional goals. Then there are others when it seems that your career is a mess. The good news is that the positive energy lasts longer than the negative energy and it has more long-term residual effects. So, stay focused and keep going through the mess as you deal with the various dramas and challenges that come along this month. Pisces February 20 - March 20 You have quite a few planets encouraging you to have fun, fall in love, play, splurge, and spend time with children, pets, and your favourite hobbies. You’re also encouraged to travel, learn new things, explore other people’s belief systems, and find delightful ways to broaden your horizons. There are times when your finances are not cooperating with your zest for the good life, but you’re still able to find inexpensive ways to have fun while opening your mind to new things.
