It’s that time of year again when love is in the air, albeit for one day only. Many people chime that it’s simply a Hallmark-concocted occasion, therefore it’s not really an occasion, but Wikipedia says it dates back to the High Middle Ages when the tradition of courtly love flourished, and by the 15th century, it had evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other. Regardless of its origin, it’s now the second most celebrated holiday around the world (How Stuff Works), and is the day people wait for to pronounce their love for each other. So from all of us here at Dazzle, we truly love you dear reader. As for our February issue, we’ve also joined in the celebrations and compiled everything Valentine for you: in our cover beauty article, MAKE UP FOR EVER’s Technicolor Valentine (p. 34), we help you get ready for your date; look your best in the latest couture that suits every style and occasion, Lady In Red (p. 44); and pick a special something for that Valentine night, Valentine Lingerie (p. 52). We’ve addressed some love related issues like flirting at work (p. 28), flirting ethics (p. 20), and speaking his love language (p. 18), amongst other things. Yet, there’s still so much more in store for you. So, go on, indulge…

Leisure: A Necessity Research shows leisure plays a pivotal role in maintaining a healthy, well-balanced life…

Moll teaches students and professionals about the necessity for leisure in their lives. She defines leisure as anything that brings personal enjoyment to individuals and allows them to recharge their batteries. “Work is the single activity we do most in our lives. We work more than we sleep or eat,” says Moll. “Our health and medicine are so much more improved than they were a century ago, but we’re going to wipe ourselves out because we’re just working, working, working.” Moll also notes that the biggest abusers of the all-work-andno-play lifestyle are Baby Boomers. “This generation really pushes to gain the American Dream and thinks nothing of putting in long hours or forgoing vacations for only

14

FEBRUARY 2013

long weekends,” she says. “They often find it hard to put the breaks on, catch their breath, and relax.” Moll’s colleague, David L. Farrugia, PhD, chair of the Counselling and Human Services Department at Canisius and a professional counsellor, says that by the time patients come to him, many have already visited their doctor for anxiety-like symptoms. Stress is often the culprit. “Physiologically, the body is able to adapt and function at high levels of stress but eventually it begins to take its toll on a person’s mental and physical health,” says Farrugia. In the professional world this condition is known as General Adaptive Syndrome, first identified by Hans Selye, MD, who is known internationally as the ‘father of the stress field’. If the physical concerns aren’t enough, Moll says to consider the long-term benefits of leisure. Under Moll’s guidance, Canisius alumna, Summer M. Reiner examined the pivotal role leisure can play throughout a person’s life. “Findings show that people who nurture leisure activities throughout their lives have a much healthier outlook physically, mentally, emotionally, socially, and in their sense of selves,” says Reiner. Reiner found that children who participate in leisure activities

tend to grow into confident, active, and satisfied adults. “Extra-curricular activities for school-aged children contribute a lot towards their development,” says Reiner, whose research was published in Counselling Today magazine. They stay out of trouble. They tend to be more excited about school. They have higher grades. They gain confidence. They enhance their social, physical, and intellectual skills. Overall, they exhibit better mental health. Reiner’s research also found that parents who nurture their leisure lives tend to manage stress better and are more prepared to handle empty nest syndrome. Equally important is that parental leisure promotes family stability and serves as a model for a healthy, balanced lifestyle for children. “Children who witness their parents enjoying hobbies and activities outside of work grow up to value the benefits of leisure themselves,” says Reiner. But she warns that parents should not trick themselves into thinking their children’s activities count for their own leisure. “Many parents say that their enjoyment is watching their child’s baseball or soccer game. But that’s an aspect of parenting, not leisure. Parents need to develop their own leisure interests.” These interests help older adults live healthy, productive lives past retirement. Without the responsibilities of a job

Article: Canisius College/Newswise.com

According to leisure expert Dr. E. Christine Moll, “play” is as important to a person’s health as keeping cholesterol levels in check and getting regular exercise. Moll, a professional counsellor and professor of counselling and human services at Canisius College in Buffalo, NY, explains that leisure is like medicine. “It airs out our brain. It renews our spirit. It gives us clarity of thought. It’s a benefit to our blood pressure. It gives us life satisfaction. For all the dimensions of our lives - our physical, mental, spiritual, and cognitive health - leisure time should be a necessity not a luxury!”

or children, it’s common for people at this stage to experience an identity crisis. But Moll says that retirees who embrace leisure throughout their lives are less likely to lose that sense of self when they stop working. For those who stay active throughout their Golden Years, leisure provides structure to what appears to be an unstructured day. “It keeps them more mentally aware, emotionally connected, and physically capable. Their pastimes give them a sense of independence and competency.” Leisure Time Moll says that the first step to adding leisure to your life is to determine how much leisure is lacking. “If you can’t remember the last time you took time for just you, it’s time for a change,” she says. “Whether it’s cooking, needlework, golfing or whatever, put leisure into your life. It’s important.” Moll advises that once you commit to making a change, it’s time to reconnect with your favourite pastimes. Not surprising, many people are so far removed from recreation they have forgotten what they once enjoyed. If you fit this profile, Moll recommends a few things: Spend time at the

library to find out where your interests lie. Stroll the aisles at craft or sporting good stores for promising new hobbies. Talk to people about what they like to do for fun. “It’s like food, you have to taste different things to find your passion,” she says. “The greatest indicator of your leisure interests as an adult can be found in your youth. The whole idea of recreation is re-creation.” Leisure can include anything from a crossword puzzle to a pickup game of basketball, as long as it fits the following criteria: The activity must be freely chosen by the participant, provide satisfaction and adventure, arouse interest, require a commitment, serve as a sense of separation or escape, and most importantly, be pleasurable. Moll warns that competition is not part of the leisure game. “If you didn’t win that tennis match or were only able to bike two miles instead of three, that’s ok. What’s important is that you’re relaxing. But if you get so wrapped up in winning that your blood pressure goes up or you make others around you miserable, that’s not leisure. Yes, you can be sweaty or exhausted when you’re finished doing whatever

you were doing but for the purpose of being helpful, leisure needs to be restful.” Leisure also needs to be practiced. According to Moll, too many of us don’t recognize an opportunity when it comes along. But a little downtime gives our brains a muchneeded break. “Leisure is a lot like having a runner’s high,” Moll explains. “Our endorphins kick in, our heart rate changes, our blood pressure changes, and our emotional well-being gets a time out. A little personal playtime can also go a long way in our relationships. We can’t give what we don’t have. We can’t give to our family, friends, students, or clients if we don’t first take some time for ourselves.” Moll adds, “It doesn’t matter what you do or that you may not do it well. Just start slowly and fake it until you make it. The point is to get out there, relax, and appreciate the grandeur of the world once in a while. Play with abandon. Live life with intention. And be gentle with yourself.” Read the Canisius Magazine cover story about the importance of leisure at Canisius.edu/alumni/magazine/ fall06.

s t s u M s l a o Making G Personality

A fresh cycle starts fresh every year on Jan 1. We promise ourselves we’ll start eating better, work out, save more money, or otherwise improve upon the way we live our lives. However, statistics show that by mid-January, most people don’t follow through on their resolutions and give up. This happens so often but it’s not always easy to understand why. Peak performance coach and human behaviour expert Tony Robbins says that when someone isn’t achieving their goal, it’s often because they haven’t made it a ‘must’. “People give up on achieving their goals because they are shoulds and not musts,” says Robbins. “But when something becomes an absolute must for you, when you cut off any other possibility in your mind, then you will do whatever it takes to achieve your goal.” Too often, people set unrealistic ways to reach their goals, feel disappointed when they have a setback, and give up too soon. If you

need to lose 50 pounds but haven’t exercised in three years, going out for a 10-mile run isn’t a good way to get started - you’ll only be discouraged. Instead, start with goals that are achievable. You’ll enjoy consistent successes that add up to create the momentum needed to get you to your goal.

in life because they major in minor things,” says Robbins. Start by painting a mental picture: Who do you want to become as a person? Then, ask yourself what standards you would need to set to be that person? What would you have to believe or do? How would you have to dress, talk, or walk?

When faced with a setback, look at it as just a step along the way to your goal. When something doesn’t work, try another approach and always keep your end goal fresh in your mind.

Drop the story and tell yourself the truth. Honest assessments can be hard to make, but it’s an essential step to lasting change. Write down, in detail, what your life is like right now in the area you want to change. Be specific. For example: I can’t fit into any of my clothes and keep buying bigger sizes pretending I am not getting heavier.

Getting started is the biggest step you’ll take. Having some guidelines can help you begin working towards your goals. Tony Robbins offers these tips from his popular personal development program Ultimate Edge: Raise your standards. To find real personal fulfilment, you must continue to grow by challenging yourself and raising the standards by which you live your life. “Most people fail

Develop a vision that excites you and the habits you need to make it real. “Knowing what you want is important, but you need to know why you want it and to have a clear vision - that’s what will keep pulling you towards your goal,” says Robbins. Instead of setting a goal to lose 10 pounds, make

it more compelling by concentrating on the effects of losing weight, like transforming your body or feeling younger and stronger. Write it down, using language that excites you and the habits you will need to achieve your goal - again, be honest, specific, and realistic. Find role models. Whether it’s friends,

acquaintances, or someone in the public eye, find role models who inspire you and are achieving the results you want. Often, by watching and following what they do, you’ll get the same results. This can be an intimidating step, but it can make a real difference - reach out to those people and tell them what you admire. Ask them about the steps

they took to achieve success; this can provide you with a clearer idea of how to reach your goal. Speak His Love Language This Valentine In ‘The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love that Lasts’ by Gary Chapman the author describes the ways in which we feel most loved, and the way we can show others love in a way they’ll treasure. For instance, a person who is mistrustful of compliments may not feel loved when her partner tells her she looks great, but instead would question his motives. This person might prefer a partner who speaks the love language Chapman calls ‘acts of service’.

incorporating the things that make your partner feel most loved into your celebration with these suggestions. For those unfamiliar with the book, Dr. Chapman’s simple, direct version that fully explains how these ‘languages’ can affect relationships for better or worse:

Recognizing your partner’s love language can help you tighten the bonds you already have and make your relationship better than you’ve ever imagined without undergoing torturous changes and negotiations to get there.

• Quality Time - spending time together, with or without participating in other activities. • Words of Affirmation compliments, kind words, boasting to others about this wonderful person. • Receiving Gifts - wrapped and tied with a bow is especially nice. • Acts of Service - doing nice, helpful things that aren’t necessarily required. • Physical Touch - both affectionate and intimate touch.

This Valentine’s Day, consider

Although all relationships have

some degree of each of these, each individual will have one that is critically important to him or her. In fact, it’s something so important to a person that its absence would be sufficient to convince them that their partner doesn’t genuinely love them. For instance, a woman who thrives on hearing affirmations from her husband would be very unhappy with a taciturn man who demonstrates his love by doing nice things for her no matter how many kind gestures he shows! If you’re not sure what makes your partner feel loved, don’t be afraid to ask! If they can’t answer, look at his or her other close relationships. Scot B. stumbled on the answer when he was asked: his close relationship with his parents revealed clues. He appreciates the way his father surprises him by mowing Scot’s

yard occasionally, and Scot often invites his parents over for an evening of company. This means his primary love language is probably either quality time or acts of service, and that he values both. Once you’ve narrowed down your spouse’s love languages to the one or two that are as necessary to them as, say, breathing, you can find a way to dedicate a few minutes a day to speaking their language so the relationship will keep being treasured as if it were new. For special occasions like Valentine’s Day, speaking your loved one’s language will make the holiday more meaningful than ever before. Here are suggestions to help in your planning: Quality Time Holiday activities that incorporate quality time may be as simple as going to dinner in a nice restaurant, but to add that extra something, consider hiring a carriage ride or limousine for the evening. Overnight camping trips, driving to the country with some comfy quilts for stargazing, taking a train ride together, or indulging in a champagne hot-air balloon brunch will mean a great deal to the native Q.T. speaker. Words of Affirmation A man or woman who thrives on positive regard will feel treasured by a partner who writes a poem or song celebrating their love, no matter how unsophisticated the results may be. If you’re a gift-giver, a framed print of a sentimental quote is a great choice. Personalized items from Zazzle.com that let your partner see your love again and again can’t be beat. Receiving Gifts

A person who feels most valued by getting tangible tokens of love will appreciate the way you present whatever you choose. Instead of dropping it into a gift bag and throwing in a few sheets of tissue paper, find ways to make your presentation something more. Use ribbons, raffia, or netting to accentuate your gift bag or box. Make sure the gift inside is wrapped nicely in attractive paper. Build anticipation by setting up a treasure hunt with clues that must be solved in order to find the next clue, which leads to the next, until finally, your sweetheart gets to open that lovely package. Acts of Service Have you ever made your partner breakfast in bed? If cooking’s not your thing, choose to do one or two of the household chores he or she normally does. In thirty minutes or less, you

could have the house vacuumed, the trash emptied, and the dishwasher loaded. Sure, it’ll all be a mess again in a few days, but the effect on your lover’s heart won’t vanish so quickly. Coupon books that offer your services for completing common tasks like taking the car in for an oil change or folding laundry will keep on giving after the holiday. (Yes, you do actually have to honour them!) Physical Touch Men and women who treasure touch will especially enjoy a massage. A day at the spa is nice, especially if you can enjoy it together. Delivering that touch yourself will be especially meaningful for your beloved if you’ve gotten out of practice lately. Foot rubs and scalp massages can offer pleasant alternatives from traditional back massages, too.

Flirting:

Playing or Playing ? d n u o r A

Love is in the air on Valentine’s Day, and Gettysburg College philosophy professor Steve Gimbel is offering some ethical and practical advice on flirting to those of the faint of heart. “Flirting is an art form. The accomplished flirt knows when to be subtle and when to be blunt,” Gimbel said. “But the game can be dangerous, especially if you’re involved with someone. Does your lover have a right to be pissed at you for flirting? Like so much in ethics, the answer is it depends.” Gimbel defined flirting as the first steps of courtship without the intent of it going beyond that point. It’s good-natured play.

20

FEBRUARY 2013

He equates flirting to romance as sparring is to boxing. And he adds that neither person will get hurt because both parties know that it’s going nowhere. “Flirting is different from engaged, friendly conversation. It’s also different from hitting on or teasing someone,” Gimbel said. “There’s an edge to flirting because both of you know it isn’t real. Flirting is for playing around, hitting on is for players.” But is there anything morally wrong with flirting? Gimbel explained that on the face of it, there is nothing intrinsically wrong with being a flirt. “Exclusive

relationships require fidelity and that means not sharing one’s most intimate side with anyone else, either physically or emotionally,” Gimbel said. “Flirts, like married actors who perform love scenes, are playing a part, only this one is not pre-scripted. The depth of true romantic involvement is something completely different from the shallowness of flirting,” Gimbel explained. “A flirt is perfectly capable of enjoying a fulfilling and exclusive relationship. Of course, that requires a certain sort of partner.” The Verdict Gimbel explained that generally partners in a relationship come in two

flavours: confident and secure or insecure and seeking approval.

other than your partner can send an unintended message, Gimbel said.

nothing wrong with the act of flirting but context matters.

“Being with a flirt is a constant reminder that the person attracted to you is found attractive by those around you, and some people are comfortable with that but most people aren’t,” Gimbel said.

“Part of being in an interpersonal relationship is to be concerned about your partner’s feelings and flirting may have unintended consequences that you need to be aware of,” Gimbel said.

That’s because flirting for the most part, according to Gimbel, is indistinguishable from hitting on someone. If your partner has any worries about your faithfulness - reasonable or not - watching you flirt will be painful. Sexually charged attention directed at someone

Sleeping around on your lover is ethically and morally wrong, Gimbel said. For others though, it isn’t the act but the consequences of the act that make the moral difference. It’s the real world consequences that determine what your lover is feeling. As Gimbel said, there is

“Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. said that the right to swing your fist ends where your neighbour’s nose begins. You have every right to swing your fist or flirt with whomever you like, as long as you are acutely aware of where your neighbour’s nose and your lover’s feelings begin.” So it all boils down to whether your partner considers flirting as playing or playing around - if it’s the former, then you should steer clear of it if you want to stay with your partner for happily ever after.

This is great news for small and medium-sized businesses because cloudbased systems provide a plethora of tools, save costs, and minimize maintenance. For example, cloud programs can help manage payroll, invoicing, phone systems, documents, customer management,

Trend 2: The Era Of Social Media Social media’s growth continues to boom, and businesses no longer have the option of ignoring its outreach potential. It’s cost effective and connects you to customers in ways never before possible. Use Youtube, Twitter, Facebook, and blogs as part of your business’s social media program. Trend 3: Your Workplace Is Everywhere Technology enables people to stay connected and work from, virtually, anywhere, meaning the terms ‘off the clock’ or ‘away from the office’ are going extinct. Whether you’re working from home, at the office, or in a coffee shop, it’s vital to be accessible at all times, especially if you run a small or medium-size business. Whether your preferred device is a laptop, tablet, or smartphone, staying connected is a must. Trend 4: Video Conferencing Instead Of Business Travel Traveling is costly and timeconsuming. Today, if you tell someone you’ll be in touch, he or she may not only ask when, but how. Modern technology has dramatically changed the way we communicate, providing multiple ways to stay connected at any time. For small and medium-sized businesses, this means big opportunities to stay competitive, provided that they understand technology trends and use them to their advantage.

is a low-cost way to meet with customers, prospects, and suppliers from virtually anywhere with a computer and internet access. Common video conferencing resources include Skype, ooVoo, and Cisco WebEx, making it easy to communicate with individuals or groups. Trend 5: Applications Keep Things Moving Apps are not just fun and games - many are made specifically for the mobile office, making on-the-go work easy. Plantronics Instant Meeting app, for example, allows one-click access to conference calls from a smartphone without the need to remember long conference codes and leader PINs when you’re out and about. Other useful mobile office apps

include Documents to Go and QuickOffice, providing efficient access to documents, agendas, and analytics. Trend 6: Talk Just Got Cheaper Long distance phone calls to employees, customers, and prospects can quickly increase a phone bill. Internet-hosted phone systems are becoming more popular because they are low cost, flexible, and low maintenance. Skype is a good example of a voice-over-IP service that allows individuals to communicate through video, voice, and instant messaging using a headset. Trend 7: Devices Talk Amongst Themselves Think how much more effective your communications would be if all your devices worked

together. Fortunately, that’s happening now and the technology trend is aptly called Unified Communications. It delivers voice, email, SMS, video conferencing, and document sharing into a single interface so that you can easily relay any or all of your data to others. With a laptop, internet connection, Skype, and a headset, you can conduct business from just about anywhere at any time. To learn more about these trends, visit www.Plantronics.com/ BigTrends. Even though at first it may seem overwhelming to adopt each of these trends, when you do, you’ll find that it’s easier than you think and a smart way to help your business thrive.

Sick From The Stomach Researchers find that bacterial changes in the stomach may trigger diseases like rheumatoid arthritis…

Larger-than-normal populations of specific gut bacteria may trigger the development of diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and possibly fuel disease progression in people genetically predisposed to this crippling and confounding condition, say the researchers, who are participating in the Mayo Illinois Alliance for Technology Based Healthcare. The study was published in the April 12 issue of PloS ONE. “A lot of people suspected that gut flora played a role in rheumatoid arthritis, but no one had been able to prove it because they couldn’t say which came first - the bacteria or the genes,” says senior author Veena Taneja, Ph.D., a Mayo Clinic immunologist. “Using genomic sequencing technologies, we have been able to show the

gut microbiome may be used as a biomarker for predisposition.” The roughly 10 trillion cells that make up the human body have neighbours: mostly bacteria that often help, training the immune system and aiding in digestion, for example. The bacteria in the intestines, in addition to a relatively small number of other microorganisms (the gut microbiome), outnumber human cells 10-to-1. Researchers found that hormones and changes related to aging may further modulate the gut immune system and exacerbate inflammatory conditions in genetically susceptible individuals. Nearly 1% of the world’s population has rheumatoid arthritis, a disease in which the immune system attacks tissues, inflaming joints, and sometimes leading to deadly complications such as heart disease. Other diseases with suspected gut bacterial ties include type I diabetes and multiple sclerosis. Researchers with the Mayo Illinois Alliance for Technology Based

Healthcare say that identifying new biomarkers in intestinal microbial populations and maintaining a balance in gut bacteria could help physicians and patients stop rheumatoid arthritis before it starts. “This study is an important advance in our understanding of the immune system disturbances associated with rheumatoid arthritis. While we do not yet know what the causes of this disease are, this study provides important insights into the immune system and its relationship to bacteria of the gut, and how these factors may affect people with genetic susceptibilities to disease,” says Eric Matteson, M.D., Chairman of Rheumatology at Mayo Clinic, who was not a study author. Dr. Taneja and her team genetically engineered mice with the human gene HLA-DRB1*0401, a strong indicator of predisposition to rheumatoid arthritis. A set of control mice were engineered with a different variant of the DRB1 gene, known to promote resistance to

The body recognizes them as out of place, and in some way this triggers the body to attack itself, he says. Ask Nisrine Glow

Health Dilemmas

I just started dating a new guy and we have plans for Valentine’s, but how can I make sure that he’s safe and that I stay safe and healthy? Anonymous, Jeddah Well, first things first, don’t kiss him on Valentine’s! I know it sounds like a bummer but it’s safer for your health. “MidFebruary is usually the peak season for infectious diseases such as the seasonal and H1N1 flu, mononucleosis, colds, and coughs,” says Jorge Parada, MD, Medical Director of Infectious Disease at Loyola University Health System. “And don’t rely on obvious signs of illness such as sneezing or fever as a tip off. People with infectious diseases start shedding the virus before they experience the full effect of the illness.”

Ask Nisrine

Changing weather or temperatures are often blamed for winter’s coughs and sniffles. But in reality, colds, coughs and the flu are infectious diseases caught through transmission from one human to another. “Becoming too hot or too cold can cause stress to the body, weaken the defence in fighting off infections, and thus make us more vulnerable,” said Parada, who is also a professor of preventive medicine at Stritch School of Medicine. “But a person has to be exposed to a virus or bacteria to catch it.”

Email Nisrine Kreidieh, at: nisrine@dazzlemagazine.com or by post to the Dazzle KSA office.

Don’t Share Utensils: “Humans can transmit some infections through saliva. A glass, fork, or napkin can act as a bridge and pass the bug along to another person when that shared object is used by one infected person and then used by another.” Don’t Kiss or Have Close Body Contact if You Feel Unwell: “Throwing up and blowing your nose is not fun; no one wants to be ill. So being upfront and honest when you feel under the weather will be appreciated.” Give The Flu The Kiss-Off: Parada says that it takes 10-14 days after injection for the flu shot to have full preventive effect. “Get that flu shot now to increase your odds for romance on Valentine’s Day,” says Parada. “Having a flu shot is definitely sexy. It beats the flu every time!”

Answer: Loyola University Health System/Newswise.com.

So, although it sounds very unromantic, follow Parada’s Do’s and Don’ts for safe displays of affection this Valentine:

Ask Nisrine

Drinking from the same glass or sharing dessert with the same fork may seem romantic on your Valentine’s date night, but it may also lead to infections. Also, keep your chopstick to yourself! “Someone can have a cold sore that hasn’t erupted yet and use lip balm which is then shared, and the cold sore virus, otherwise known as herpes, is transmitted,” explained Parada. Albeit less frequently, shared linens also are transmitters of infections. “A shared pillowcase, napkin, or towel can also actually be a conduit for disease, especially if someone has a sore or cut,” says Parada.

Beauty Issues

d e k n u b e D s h t y M s s o L r i a H We all endure the nuisance of hair loss, and it sometimes even goes as far as fearing that we’re going bald! We’re also surrounded by a million and one myths about what makes our hair fall and how to stop it. So, the region’s only Trichologist, Mike Ryan, Brand Expert CLEAR Arabia, shed some light on what’s fact and what’s not:

Washing your hair every day makes it fall out. False. Washing your hair regularly won’t make it fall out; those hairs at the bottom of the shower are already released hair strands that your shampoo has simply removed. A dirty head of hair may make for better bed head hairstyles, but it’s certainly not extending the life span of your follicles nor preventing baldness. Washing your hair daily with a gentle, effective cleanser such as Clear Hair Therapy is the best thing you can do for your hair. Blow-drying makes your hair fall out. False. While it can damage, burn, or dry your hair, blowdrying isn’t the root problem of hair loss. Hair that has been damaged by blow-drying may fall out, but unless you’re suffering

38

FEBRUARY 2013

from male or female pattern baldness, it will grow back almost immediately. The same applies to straightening your hair. If your maternal grandfather is bald, you’ll go bald. False. The old myth that you inherit baldness from your mother’s side of the family is a total myth! The hair loss gene is hereditary but comes from either you maternal or paternal side. So you can stop blaming your mom and start putting some of the guilt for creating a bald son onto your dad. Cutting your hair short will make it grow back thicker. False. While frequent haircuts don’t prevent baldness or hair loss, hair does feel and look thicker after a haircut because your hair is naturally thicker at the base. Wearing hats causes hair loss. False. Unless you’re wearing a swimming hat on a daily basis or a hat that’s tight enough to put excessive tension on your hair, wearing hats shouldn’t be pulling your hair out, even if you’re wearing one 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Losing 100 strands of hair a day is normal. False. Most of us have between 100,000 and 150,000 hair follicles in our scalp, 90% of which are, if

you’re lucky, growing at any one time. The saying that we lose 100 of these hairs per day is a gross overestimate; it’s actually more like 20-50 hairs a day. The upside is that those hairs you see in the bottom of the bath or shower every morning are totally normal. Hair products cause hair loss. False. Despite what people may say, the amount of product you put on your hair doesn’t affect hair loss. Gel, wax, mouse, hairspray - you can plaster as much on as you like and be safe in the knowledge that it isn’t going to make your perfectly styled hair fall out. Stress causes hair loss. True. Stress can cause hair loss, but this hair loss is temporary. Stressful events such as illness and money worries can cause hair production to stop temporarily, but stress is not the cause of baldness. If you suffer from, male/female pattern baldness, this in itself can also cause stress, but removing the stress will unfortunately not stop the hair loss.

Mike Ryan, Brand Expert & Trichologist CLEAR Arabia

Hairstyles themselves don’t cause hair loss. False. Surprisingly, there are certain hairstyles which can in fact cause hair loss, and permanent hair loss at that. Some extreme hairstyles that place constant pressure on the hair follicles can cause problems with hair loss in women and men. Hairstyles with cornrows and ponytails put excessive pressure on your hair and can cause a permanent hair loss condition known as traction alopecia.

Ask Sonja

Beauty Dilemmas

What’s the best and easiest way to care for my skin this season? Jawaher, Riyadh While the crisp, cool weather may leave a healthy-looking rosy glow on cheeks, colder seasons can be tremendously harsh on skin. Extreme changes and inclement weather during the fall and winter months can leave skin dry, chapped, and even cracked. “Keeping skin healthy during cold months isn’t complicated, but it does take some extra effort,” says Dr. Charles Zugerman, a practicing dermatologist and associate professor of clinical dermatology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. “Taking a few simple steps each day will help skin look and feel great no matter the season.”

Ask Sonja

Zugerman offers these tips for keeping skin healthy and beautiful when the temperatures take a dip:

2. Keep Lips Moisturized When the weather turns dry and cool, it’s not uncommon for lips to become chapped and cracked. Forgo the pain with a proactive approach of keeping lips deeply moisturized from the start. Throughout the day, continually apply a super-hydrating balm like Blistex Moisture Melt. It contains dissolving soft beads of Shea butter and aloe, which melt into lips for a long-lasting moisture boost. The formula also includes SPF 15 to protect lips from the sun.

5. Keep H2O Top-Of-Mind Keeping skin hydrated goes beyond lotion and moisturizers. It starts from the inside by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Whether you’re enjoying a refreshing ice water or pouring yourself a cup of warm tea, make it your goal to drink water morning, noon, and night. “By making small changes to your daily routine, such as applying a medicated lotion after a shower, drinking plenty of water, and using Blistex Moisture Melt, your skin will be healthy and feel wonderful during even the coldest seasons,” says Zugerman.

42

FEBRUARY 2013

Ask Sonja

4. Exfoliate Your Face Weekly Because skin can become dried out so easily during cool months, dead skin cells can build up and clog pores. To avoid winter breakouts and keep skin clean and blemish-free, it’s wise to exfoliate your face once or twice a week. A gentle exfoliating cleanser helps remove the build-up of oil and dead cells to reveal fresh, healthy skin.

Confused about makeup? Having a problem making the most of your features? What products to use? Ask Sonja to solve your problems! sonja@dazzle-magazine.com

3. Moisturize Right For The Season When the temperature drops, it’s a signal to change up your daily moisturizer. You might consider switching from a regular lotion to one that includes medication for dry skin, or a thicker formula such as a cream or butter. Avoid extremely hot showers and baths as they can zap skin of moisture. When you do indulge, keep hot showers or baths short and moisturize immediately afterwards.

Answer: Brandpoint.com. For more information on Blistex and other lip care tips, visit www.blistex.com.

1. Continue To Wear Sunscreen Don’t store away the sunscreen - protecting skin from harsh UVA and UVB rays is important all year long. The sun can be particularly intense when it reflects off ice and snow on a clear and cold day. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen to the face every day, and don’t forget the hands as they need protection too.

10 Lucky Décor Trends for 2013 Despite its negative reputation, the number 13 doesn’t always have to be unlucky. Take these top ten décor trends for 2013 from design experts, manufacturers, and trend forecasters across the country. They’re fresh, fun, and sure to bring good fortune to any home: 1. A Splash Of Colour Industry leader Pantone’s annual fashion colour report sets the tone for home décor as well as clothing, and the spring 2013 report is no exception. Its softerhued palette of Dusk Blue, Lemon Zest, African Violet, Grayed Jade, Linen, and Tender Shoots is emboldened by Monaco Blue, Poppy Red, Emerald, and Nectarine. Marc Thee, founder of a high profile residential interior design firm in America, also sees a move towards pure colour palettes such as cream and sea glass, khaki and white, or neutral with a pop of yellow.

3. Cooking Up Smart Ideas Next year’s contemporary kitchen will include European frameless laminate cabinetry, multi-tasking appliances, hands-free faucets, and increased smartphone and tablet functionality, according to Jamie Gold, a certified independent kitchen and bath designer in San Diego, California. Value-oriented remodels will remain popular, she predicts, with homeowners incorporating existing flooring, fixtures, cabinets, and/or appliances into their design plans to save money and retain favourite design elements. 4. Let It Shine Jeff Dross, senior product manager of Kichler Lighting, says energy-efficient LED products will continue to dominate lighting and will be prevalent in coves, tray ceilings, toekicks, and under and above cabinets. Chrome and polished nickel will appeal to the emerging Y generation and baby boomers modernizing their retirement homes. Tall, slender outdoor lanterns in contemporary, cottage, and transitional styles will work well for those in smaller urban spaces.

2. Not Your Mama’s Wallpaper “Repositionable wallpaper is a decorating mainstay,” says Todd Imholte, President of Murals Your Way, whose website www.muralsyourway.com, is one of the top online destinations for wall murals. The company’s ten collections of peel-and-stick wallpaper are available in themes such as Vintage, Dots, Flower Prints, and Mostly Modern, and can be removed and reused hundreds of times without losing their adhering qualities. Because the company offers colour matching, customers can match their repositionable wallpaper to an existing paint colour, updated décor, or the new Pantone colour palette.

5. Heavy Metal Susan Goldstick of Susan Goldstick Inc. predicts that home furnishings will also shine in 2013. New metals such as rose gold and gunmetal will be mixed, and pierced, hammered, and oxidized textural metals will be especially popular. Vendors will add metal to their wood pieces, and faux animal print metallics will provide texture and reflective light in the textiles arena.

6. There’s No Place Like Home “Even as the economy shows signs of improving, homeowners still find comfort in ‘cocooning’ in the warmth and safety of their homes,” says Graeme Smith, Conceptual Designer at Second Nature Kitchens. Adding an on-trend colour such as cranberry or velvety chocolate to a soothing palette of muted tones and delicate detailing creates timeless interiors, and incorporating vintage pieces fosters a sense of nostalgia, heritage, and solidity.

7. Woodn’t It Be Nice? Next year’s trendy furniture will boast reclaimed wood or reclaimedlooking synthetic wood, according to Lenny Kharitonov, President of Unlimited Furniture Group Inc. Combinations of wood and metal will be popular, such as a desk with a wood top and an iron base. Kharitonov also sees a new freedom to mix metals, linen, or stone into wood with the juxtaposition of materials and finishes creating a beautiful combination.

8. Watch Your Step Lori Kirk-Rolley, Senior Marketing Director at Daltile, notes that one of the biggest style trends of the year will be porcelain tile that emulates the look of hardwood in high-traffic areas, offering the natural beauty of wood with the long-lasting durability and ease of maintenance of tile. Rectangular-sized tiles, particularly those in long, linear plank styles, will remain popular in floor and wall applications. 9. Back To Nature Consumers’ eco-friendly focus on using organic, sustainable materials will continue into 2013. California-based Budget Blinds recommends woven wood shades made from bamboo, grasses, jute, reeds, rattan, and other natural renewable resources for honest, simple beauty. Smith suggests using timber and wicker furniture, ribbed and woven finishes on accessories, and layered wool throws in the living area of the kitchen to bring a sense of the outdoor into the home.

10. You Can Judge A Book By Its Cover Exterior design and landscaping say just as much about a home as its interior architectural counterparts. Artist and designer Pablo Solomon touts stone, concrete, and brick that blend into the environment, requires little upkeep, and is superior weather susceptible wood decks, rust-prone metals, and dulling plastics. He also sees increased use of eco-friendly native plants to save water and reduce pesticides.

Bermuda:

An Atlantic Paradise

Bermuda is one of the most beautiful islands in the world. Only a few hours flying time from many US cities, the island offers all the usual amenities but with a distinctly British feel, writes Mancunian…

Although not strictly in the Caribbean, Bermuda is usually referred to along with the other Caribbean islands. Bermuda is a major tourist destination and has the usual array of hotels, resorts, nightlife, and water sports. It is, though, more sedate than many of the other islands and generally appeals to an older and more affluent visitor. Some of its larger resorts are among the most luxurious in the Caribbean; at the other end of the accommodation scale, Bermuda specializes in small cottage rentals. Bermuda is still one of the few remaining British colonies, and it really is just like being in a warmer version

of Britain, complete with pubs, tearooms, and pretty little cottage gardens. There are two main towns on the island - Hamilton and St. George’s. Hamilton, the capital, is also the largest town and is well known for its fashionable and exclusive shops. Shopping is excellent all over Bermuda, partly because of the lack of taxes, and partly because of the island’s popularity as a port of call for cruise ships. Front Street is lined with pastel-painted buildings, many with shady arcades and balconies. Good buys in Hamilton are designer clothes, crystal, and house wares. Don’t forget to pick up your pair of Bermuda shorts, the quintessential symbol of the island. From Front Street, several narrow pedestrian shopping arcades lead to Reid Street, the other main shopping

street in Hamilton. The two big attractions in Hamilton are the Cathedral, which seems to have been transplanted straight from some Northern English town, and Fort Hamilton on the outskirts of the city. Fort Hamilton was built on orders of the Duke of Wellington, and although it never actually saw any action, the huge 18-ton cannons are still there today. Just outside Hamilton, the Bermuda Botanical Gardens are also popular; in addition to containing hundreds of flowers, trees, and shrubs, the 35-acre park also contains an art museum and a garden designed for the blind. St. George’s at the other end of the island is smaller and more relaxed than Hamilton; much of the appeal of St. George’s lies

Imagine an island with virtually no unemployment, poverty, or crime. And no sales or income tax either! Add to that an almost perfect tropical climate for most of the year and some of the world’s most gorgeous and secluded beaches. Such a place does exist, about 700 miles off the east coast of the United States - Bermuda.

in exploring the narrow streets and alleyways with their quaint names such as Old Maid’s Lane and Needle and Thread Alley. The centre of the town is King’s Square, and if you didn’t already feel you were in England, the town crier is on hand throughout the tourist season. A short walk from the square is St. Peter’s Church, one of the most picturesque on the island, and supposedly the oldest church in the Western Hemisphere. In the adjoining graveyard, you can see the final resting places of governors, pirates, and ordinary citizens as well as the rather poignant slaves’ graveyard. Bermuda is justifiably known for its lovely beaches. Although many of these are often crowded, you can generally find a small secluded cove or strip of sand to yourself. What gives Bermuda its often-photographed pink beaches are red pigments from minute shells and tiny sea creatures being deposited on the shore. The most picturesque, and perhaps the pinkest, beach is Warwick Long Bay Beach on the south coast. That same pink sand may not seem so charming if your golf ball is lying in it Bermuda has eight world class golf courses, making it a major golfing destination. All are fairly challenging, more like traditional Scottish links than the carefully manicured courses of

North America. If you have walked all the golf courses, Bermuda has another great place to walk - a trail that runs the length of what was the old railway line. The railway line was built in 1931 and was closed down in 1948 as it was too expensive to maintain the tracks and the lines and rolling stock sold overseas. The trail is easy to walk as it is flat and runs the whole length of the island, from Somerset to St. George’s, making it a delightful and different way to see Bermuda. On the very tip of the island is the Naval Dockyard. This large shopping and entertainment complex was once Britain’s premier port in the Western Atlantic and a refuge from pirates. The shipyard was closed in 1951 and the whole complex became one of Bermuda’s biggest tourist attractions. One of the most popular destinations in the dockyard is the maritime museum, which contains relics and artefacts from more than 300 ships that have been wrecked off the island’s reefs. One of the sights in this area that is so small that you can literally step over it, is the world’s smallest bridge! The span on Somerset Bridge opens just 18 inches, just wide enough to allow a sailboat mast to go through. All in all, Bermuda is a luxurious, joyous, and definitely unique island for a once in a lifetime holiday!

Temporary Rise In Female Breadwinners In Europe Author of Rocking Your Role: The How To Guide To Success For Female Breadwinners, Jenny Garrett, shared her thoughts on a recent EC report investigating the impact of the economic crisis on the situation of women and men and on gender equality policies: 1. During times of economic crisis, the traditional view is that women behave as employment buffers, called in when demand expands but pushed back when it contracts. This has been challenged by this report and it seems young men and women on temporary employment contracts and migrant workers are the new buffers. 2. Dual earner couples lost ground in the downturn almost exclusively to the advantage of female breadwinner couples that increased their share to almost 10%. 3. In 2007 dual earner couples were the vast majority of all working age couples where at least one member worked (74.1% on average in the 26 countries examined). Male breadwinner couples were a minority (21%) and female breadwinner couples were a small component (4.9%). In the first two years of the crisis, dual earner couples lost ground (-5.1%), but almost entirely in favour of female breadwinner couples. 3. Men reported cuts in pay, heightened job insecurity, and

worsening quality of the work content more frequently than women. Women reported having to reduce work hours more frequently than men. 4. While more frequent complaints of job insecurity and pay cuts among men reflect higher jobs losses on their part, more frequent grievances about the quality of work content may also reflect the fact that in ‘normal’ times, men are less likely to be induced to accept compromises relating to the quality of their work on account of family commitments. 5. The share of dual-earner couples dropped by 3.7%, largely in favour of an increase in couples where the woman is the sole earner (+3.4%). It remains to be seen whether the additional women the crisis has drawn into the labour market will remain there if and when a robust recovery finally materialises. 6. The shift from dual to female breadwinner couples was more pronounced in some of the countries worst and first hit by the crisis – mainly the Baltic countries (Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania). Why are there more female breadwinners during times of economic turmoil? According to Garrett, there are five drivers behind the increase in female breadwinners during the economic crisis: 1. Women are cheap, they have always been paid less than men, even if the gap is reducing, and that means a lot when you, as an organisation or employer, are making tough financial decisions. Compare a man and a woman

doing the same job, and you’ll choose the woman because she’s cheaper and doing the same role. “Women earn £500,000 less than men over their working lives.” 2. Some male roles have been totally eradicated. Roles in male dominated industries in the private sector were the first hit and haven’t sprung up elsewhere. These men will have to re-train or sit it out in the hope that these roles will materialise again. While this is happening, women have to step in and be the breadwinner. 3. The maternal instinct. Women will do whatever it takes to look after their families, taking jobs that are well beneath their education and experience, part-time roles, etc. This makes them flexible and innovative in their approach to Text: © 2013 CMA Close Up News Service/Country Music Association Inc. New Artist Spotlight: Lucky Ned Pepper By Bob Doerschuk These two Bakersfieldbased singers infuse their music with some wide-open, big-sky flavour. The songs on their debut album, Get Lucky, are contemporary, each written by some of the best songwriters along Music Row. They’ve been around long enough to season their

work, whether that’s a combination of part-time roles, setting up a business, or highlighting the transferability of their skills, they’ll do anything to ensure their family doesn’t starve. This is evident when we think of the women taxi drivers in New Delhi and the increase in female breadwinners in North Korea.

as not taking work as seriously because we need flexibility for family, or seen as an expense because we want to have a baby. This means that we’re not discouraged by the climate but, as always, seek to make the most of the situation and rise above it, whereas men are finding it much harder to be in the position of underdog.

4. Pragmatism. If a family has children (depending on which country they live in) childcare will be a huge consideration. Making the decision for the partner who earns the most to stay working and the other to be homemaker for a while, is now an option many can’t afford not to take.

Jenny Garrett concludes: “In my book, Rocking Your Role, the female breadwinners that I interviewed saw their situation as temporary. I viewed this as a coping mechanism for women to deal with the stress and perhaps not deal with underlying issues they had about being breadwinner, but depending on the length of the crisis and how it works for them, they may deicide to make it a permanent arrangement.”

5. History. Women are used to being the underdog in the work environment; we can be regarded

sound with experience. For 13 years they were members of the Smokin’ Armadillos. When the group split, they went their separate ways until 2005, when Russell invited Graham to join in on a solo project. 5 Unique Valentine Gifts Valentine is a special time of year to show the important people in our lives how much we appreciate them - and that means gift-giving. If picking out holiday gifts is painless for you, you’re one of the lucky ones. More often than not, people have a tough time finding the perfect present for friends and family, particularly if you have someone on your list who already seems to have everything! So, if you’re stumped as to what to get that impossible-to-buy-for person, consider these five gift ideas that are sure to brighten anyone’s day:

2. Make A Miracle Happen Positively impacting others by giving a charitable gift in the recipient’s name embraces the true meaning of the season. The new Give Miracles Holiday Catalogue from American non-profit Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals features indemand paediatric items and services that local children’s hospitals need; anything from comforting teddy bears to a case of extra-small preemie diapers smaller than the palm of your hand! For high-impact gifts like a

66

physical therapy toy kit or a paediatric wheelchair, funds can be collectively raised by numerous gift-givers. This option is ideal for extended families looking to do something more meaningful than the typical gift exchange. And to make that do-good feeling for the recipient last long after the holidays are over, Give Miracles donors receive on-going communication from Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals throughout the year about how their gift is making an impact at their local hospital. Browse the gift catalogue at www. GiveMiracles.org. 3. Purchase A Monthly Club Membership Rather than wasting money on a new gadget that will quickly be forgotten, give a gift that benefits the recipient all year long. Monthly clubs provide fun deliveries to a loved one’s address, an on-going reminder of your generosity. Monthly gift clubs are available for just about anything, from jams and cheese, to books and planes. 4. Give A Gift That Grows Potted plants are a fantas-

tic gift idea because they represent how your love continues to grow for that special someone. Plus, plants are a wonderful addition to interior décor and help clean the air. With so many houseplants readily available, you’re sure to find the perfect one for the person who has everything. Does he gravitate toward décor with vivid colour? Choose a flowering plant that provides delightful blooms. Does she love Asian culture? How about gifting a bonsai tree or a bamboo plant? 5. Provide An Experience Often, it’s not what’s in the box, it’s the memory that stays with so many people after the holidays have passed. That’s why giving a special experience can make a truly meaningful gift. Think about what really interests the recipient or an activity they’ve had on their bucket list. Perhaps it’s a hot air balloon ride or a white water rafting daytrip. If the person really loves to shop, hire a personal shopper for the day and let them see what it’s like to live like a star. If the recipient loves gourmet food, purchase a spot in a class taught by your town’s hottest chef.

1. Gift Your Services Rather than giving a tangible item, give your services; it’s the perfectly practical gift for the person on your list who may be short on space, lacking financial resources, or would just appreciate a little extra help. Love kids? Offer free childcare so the recipient can enjoy an evening out on the town without worrying about the little ones. Have a knack for cooking? Gift a weeknight meal that you deliver to the recipient’s doorstep. Known for your organization? Offer your skills to help the recipient organize a closet, office, or other cluttered space.
