September - 2021 TANZANIA READY TO HOST 65TH COMMISSION FOR AFRICA MEETING

August 2022

OMAN TOURISM REACHES BACK TO ITS HERITAGE IN TANZANIA

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism is proud to inform you that, the 65th UNWTO –CAF meeting scheduled to be hosted by The United Republic of Tanzania from 5th to 7th of October 2022 is one of the Strategic events geared to promote and develop the Tanzania – Royal Tour Program initiated by Her Excellency Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the United Republic of Tanzania. Tanzania’s Minister of Tourism and Natural Resources Ambassador DR. Pindi H. Chana has assured the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) of the country’s readiness to host the Organisation’s Commission for Africa (CAF) Meeting in Arusha under the theme: “Rebuilding Africa’s Tourism Resilience for Inclusive Socio-Economic Development”. Addressing the media after a preparatory mission to Arusha by a team from the UNWTO, Ambassador Chana said the East African country is ready to showcase the best of the country at the event.

During her official tour to Oman this year, Tanzania President Samia Suluhu Hassan rekindled the long existing historical and rich heritage relations between Tanzania and the Sultanate of Oman. Tanzania and Oman are now looking for a brighter future after almost 200 years of historical links with a heritage that is now attracting thousands of tourists to visit mainland Tanzania and mostly Zanzibar Island, famous for its heritage sites with roots from Oman. The historical ties between Oman and Tanzania had partly changed during the German and British colonization of Tanzania, then the January 1964 revolution of Zanzibar ended the influence of Oman in Zanzibar and partly the Indian Ocean’s coast of Tanzania.

DIRECT FLIGHT FROM TANZANIA TO GUANGZHOU, CHINA

FORMER TANZANIAN ARMY GENERAL TO RUN NGORONGORO CONSERVATION AREA

Air Tanzania Company Limited is delighted to announce the introduction of the flight to/from Guangzhou, China effective from Sunday 17th July, 2022.The flight will operate once a week, on Sundays from DAR ES SALAAM, TANZANIA to GUANGZHOU, CHINA and return on the same day. Flight time will be approximately 11 hours. Tanzania’s flag carrier airline began intercontinental flights in 2018 with the purchase of a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. With a second Dreamliner now added to their fleet, Air Tanzania will use these planes to carry passengers to and from China. This move is backed by the Tanzanian Tourist Board (TTB), which hopes to attract 10,000 more tourists per year to the country. This direct flight service will make it easy for travellers from Guangzhou to visit Dar Es Salaam and other parts of Tanzania, from Zanzibar to Kilimanjaro.

Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan has appointed former Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) General Venance Mabeyo to chair the Board of the management of Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) in northern Tanzania. A statement issued by the President’s Office in Dar es Salaam said that General Mabeyo’s appointment was effective last week after his retirement from military service. The General will be responsible for overseeing and advising the management of the Conservation Area on strategies that would help to protect and conserve the African wildlife and the heritage in the area – one among the most attractive tourist hotspots on the continent.

Besides, this area is the principal setting of the Great Migration which takes place from December to April and the Big Five visit the area. The camp is set-up every year in a different part of the area, to make sure that you will always have the best place to see this impressive spectacle from your own tent. In addition, the camp is ecological without losing comfort and attention. The electricity is generated by solar panels and the water is rain water collected during the rains. All the products used are biodegradables. Elegant tents built on raised wood platforms with en-suite facilities and an outside shower. After a day on safari guests can enjoy a refreshing

The family tent consists of two interconnected tents and a shared bathroom and private porch. “The Swahili word ‘safari’ literally means to travel, usually a great distance that includes some form of nightly rest spent on route. This section includes information on the different sorts of safaris available, methods of travel and accommodation that is commonly offered.”

T

anzania is one of the best tourists’ destinations in Africa. It has numerous must-see places that visitors love to explore. At one end, there is exotic adventure hidden in exploring wildlife, while there is also a fun-filled Zanzibar Island, 16

known as the best diving site, where you can enjoy activities like scuba diving and snorkeling. In order to add to the comfort level of visitors, there are numerous tailor-made safari Ideas based on your needs. CAMPING Camping charms up many different images for different people – memories of scout and guide camps as a youth or perhaps family camping trips – but for the purposes of describing the safaris offered by TATO members, we have divided camping into four categories: BUDGET CAMPING Budget camping involves traveling with all your camp equipment, your guide and possibly a cook in your vehicle with you. Once you get to camp, everyone

helps to cook and set up. This is economical and fun, but it means that you will spend valuable time in the evening organizing your camp and food, when you could be out on game drives. These services typically use the less expensive shared or public campsites, but exclusive camps, or campsites with shower and toilet facilities outside the parks can also be booked and used. Beds are usually mattresses on the floor of a small tent. FLY CAMPING Fly camping involves setting up small, temporary camps for a night under the stars, more often than not, in a remote part of the bush. Fly camps are the ideal end to a day’s walking safari or game drive, with many unexpected comforts – a canvas washbasin with hot water, fresh towels,

LIGHTWEIGHT LUXURY CAMPING Like the luxury camps, tents will have metal or wood-frame beds, standing headroom, a veranda and small en-suite toilets and hot showers. However, the tents will be smaller and may be the traditional ‘A’ shape with a central ridge pole. The camps are fully staffed and meals will be three course affairs, served by a waiter in a lantern lit mess tent, or on a table under the stars. Pick-up trucks, rather than lorries, often move these camps, so they don’t

LUXURY CAMPING Imagine feather pillows, soft towels, gin and tonic and four course gourmet meals in a candlelit dining tent, as far from the hustle bustle of modern life as you can get. This is what luxury camping is all about. The tents are roomy and comfortable, with a veranda in front and a bathroom with hot-water shower, washbasin and toilet directly behind the tent. The luxury tents have a bedside table, gas or solar lamps, chairs and a wardrobe for your clothing. A deep freeze will supply your

WALKING SAFARIS To walk through the African bush is to experience Africa closeup. Smells are suddenly subtle and varied and every sound has significance. Birds and butterflies are noticed and studied, not simply rushed past in the race for the bigger game. And when the larger animals appear, they are met at eye level, standing on the same earth. Safety is not an issue – armed, experienced guides and game rangers accompany all walks. Your camp is packed up and transported

EQUESTRIAN SAFARIS (HORSE SAFARIS) Tanzania has few operators that offer horseback safaris, unlike anything else in Africa. Galloping alongside a herd of zebra or wildebeest as they race across the open plains is a lifelong dream for many riders around the world. Tanzania’s horse safaris offer the chance to make the dream a reality with well-bred, wellschooled mounts, professional equipment and the luxury of miles of countryside. The wild animals are not afraid of horses in the same way that they are of cars or pedestrians, allowing you to get much closer than usual. You must be an accomplished rider if you wish to go on a horse safari as these expeditions will take you into the wilderness, riding in the same terrain as the wild animals. You will ride daily, your ‘game drives’ on horseback. The camp can be in situ for several days or

can move daily by truck. The types of camps that accompany these safaris vary from lightweight luxury to luxury.

CULTURAL SAFARIS A cultural safari consists of several days staying in local guesthouses, eating local ethnic food and absorbing the culture of the people who have lived in the area for years. Each day is usually spent trekking and visiting farms, houses and local projects. All meals will be in small restaurants and your nights spent in clean but simple local guesthouses. WEDDING SAFARIS Begin your big day with a game drive or walking safari, arrive at

the altar on horseback and get married with Mt Kilimanjaro in the background and local Maasai as witnesses. The choices are endless and there are many companies who are happy to work through the plentiful African red tape, to ensure you have an unforgettable wedding day – and legally binding marriage. BLUE SAFARIS The blue safari, a safari on water, is by no means a new concept, but it is one that has blossomed all over Tanzania in recent years. From the rivers and lakes of Tanzania biggest reserves, to the turquoise waters of Zanzibar’s island systems, visitors can relax while viewing both land and marine life, from elephants to whales, buffalos to dolphins. A blue safari can offer the most relaxing game viewing possible. With our ideas of Tailor-Made Safaris, we believe that your dream to explore Tanzania will be accomplished with unforgettable and memorable moments. You can travel where you want, when you want and how you want with these self-tailored safari ideas, exclusively for Dar Life readers!

TOP12 . =tANZANIA MOUNTAIN CLIMBING & HIKING Be one of you to smash the record

"Hiking on the 'rooftop of Africa' is the adventure of a lifetime, and anyone from a seasoned trekker to a reasonably fit first time enthusiast can scale the snowy peak.

11

Although Mt Kilimanjaro tops the list as Africa's most famous and highest mountain, Tanzania boasts many other mountain ranges and attractive peaks. Most of the country's mountains and volcanoes are located in the north and east of the country; They vary from the dramatic crater of Mt Meru and the active volcano of 01 Donyo Lengai to tamer options like the Usambara Mountains and the comparatively gentle slopes of the Crater Highlands.

Hiking trips and mountain climbing in Tanzania are becoming popular options for visitors not content merely observing the country from the back of a game viewing vehicle. Instead, adventurous types are taking advantage of the many trails and peaks Tanzania has to offer. Mt Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro is located near the town of Moshi and is a protected area, carefully regulated for climbers to enjoy without leaving a trace of their presence. T he mountain's ecosystems are as strikingly beautiful as they are varied and diverse. On the lowland slopes, much of the mountains farmland, with coffee, banana, cassava, and maize crops grown for subsistence and cash sale. A few larger coffee farms still exist on the lower slopes, but much of the area outside the national park has been subdivided into small plots. One inside the park, thick lowland forest covers the lower altitudes and breaks into alpine meadows once the air begins to thin. Near the peak, the landscape is

harsh and barren, with rocks and ices the predominant features above a breathtaking African view. Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro is the highlight of many visitors' experience in Tanzania. Hiking on the 'rooftop' of Africa is the adventure of a lifetime, and anyone from a seasoned trekker to a reasonably fir first-time enthusiast can scale the snowy peak.

Mt Meru

T he dramatic crater of Mt Meru is often neglected in favor of its famous neighbor to the east, but a visit to this spectacular mountain, located

Arusha National Park 64

Exploring Tanzania’s wide-open plains is a breath-taking experience in itself. So imagine being free to leave your vehicle and let some vertical adventure add to the drama. In Arusha National Park, the majestic Mount Meru awaits, ready to be tamed on foot! The exhilaration of reaching the top only increases with Mount Kilimanjaro revealing its snowy peak to the East. The ultimate view over one of Africa’s most picture perfect landscapes. Arusha National Park gives you the opportunity to explore nature at its closest. There are good trekking facilities along the climbing route. The route passes through diverse habitats: swamps, open plains, montane forests and volcanoes, all packed within a distance of 35 km. The most striking landmarks are Mount Meru and the Ngurdoto caldera, formed after volcanic eruptions between 1 and 3 million years ago. Mount Meru hasn’t put on a show in over a century, but 6,000 years ago a huge explosion blew away the eastern edge, causing a massive landslide. It is also how the mesmerizing north-eastern Momela Lakes were born. Due to different levels of alkalinity, each of these seven lakes boasts its own spectacular greenish-blue tone. The water is dotted pink with lesser and greater flamingos, while every now and then you might meet the eyes of a hippopotamus. The extinct Ngurdoto volcano in the east is home to a mini Ngorongoro. Looking down from the crater rim you see montane forests – keep an eye open for the majestic Fig Tree Arch – while an open, swampy bottom spreads out below it, at an altitude of around 1,470 metres.

The extinct Ngurdoto volcano is home to a mini Ngorongoro The entire park is full of life. You will encounter herds of buffalos (the park’s most abundand species), zebra and giraffe often, but warthog, waterbuck, pairs of dik-dik and reedbuck are also frequent sights. Other mammals roaming the area are the elusive aardvark, the bush pig and the crested porcupine. The low braying call of the silvery-cheeked hornbill regularly penetrates the silence, just as the harsh rhythmic cry of the endangered black and white colobus monkey. And this is not the only acrobat in the dense forest; there are also plenty of vervet monkeys, blue monkeys and olive baboons to be seen. The well-trained spotter’s

eye will be treated to almost 450 bird species. Although you won’t hear the ferocious roar of a lion very often – the last temporary visit took place in the late 1990’s – other big cats can be sited. Keep an eye open for spotted hyena, wild cat, leopard and, on the slopes of Mount Meru, even a wandering elephant.

The well-trained spotter’s eye will be treated to almost 450 bird species But it’s the feeling of solitude that might just be the best asset of Arusha National Park. Even being hemmed in by human settlements, Arusha Park is the quietest amongst the six bestknown parks in northern Tanzania.

Walking up Meru: a spectacular four-day trek Day 1: a 10 km trek from Momela to Miriakamba that takes about 5 hours (ascent 1,014 metres) Day 2: a 4 km trek to Saddle hut that takes about 5 hours (ascent 1,056 meters) Day 3: Rest day Day 4: a 22 km trek to the summit and back to Momela that takes about 16-17 hours (ascent 996 metres, descent 3,066 metres) The climb of Tanzania’s second highest mountain starts in the wooded savannah roamed by buffalos and giraffes. Between an elevation of 1,500 en 3,300 metres you are surrounded by montane forests full of birds and monkeys. From here up to 3,900 metres giant heathers dominate the terrain. You conquer the final metres to the summit in a barren alpine zone and an upland desert.

NOTE: don’t forget to look down every now and then for two very local species of chameleons. The conspicuous three-horned Jackson’s chameleon – frequently seen around Miriakamba Hut – and the Ruwenzori side-striped chameleon, which might reveal itself around Saddle Hut. • Arusha National Park is the second oldest park in Tanzania together with Lake Manyara. It was established in 196o. • It’s one of the smallest national parks: with its 542 km2 (and only 35 km from east to west) it’s 4% of the size of the Serengeti. The most recent enlargement took place in 2005: land was added on almost all sides and the area almost quadrupled. • Height: from 1,450 metres (Momela Lakes) to 4,566 metres (summit of Mt Meru). The entrance gates and major park roads lay at around 1,500 metres. • The park is easily accessible by road, a 35 km drive from Arusha town.

Majestic Mount Meru awaits, ready to be tamed on foot Accommodation Inside the park: Two mountain huts on Mt Meru rest house and several campsites. Outside the park: several lodges at Usa River and many hotels and hostels in Arusha city.

What to do Game driving, walking safaris, canoeing, climbing Mount Meru. Park contact: arusha@tanzaniaparks.com Hotlines: +255 689 062 363 / + 255 767 536 136

HOW TO SOLVE ISSUES AT YOUR OFFICE

Who You Can Turn to When You Can’t Count on HR (or Your Boss)

There are several different kinds of allies you can turn to. They can help you express your frustrations, come up with a thoughtful solution, and formulate a detailed and professional plan so that you’re prepared to confidently handle what might be an uncomfortable conversation. Remember, you don’t have to rely on just one ally—pick a combination of people that makes sense for you and your particular situation. People you can turn to, can be in two categories; Internal and external people. On the internal category, you can count on the following people: A Hiring Manager: Who else did you interview with to get your job besides your boss? Suggest meeting with them for a coffee date offsite—they’re the ones who most likely work closely with your manager and understand what makes them tick. They also probably know 74 Dar 20222021 60 DarLife LifeI IAUGUST NOVEMBER

you and how you work, so they can tailor their responses accordingly. A Trusted Colleague: Do you have a relationship with another manager or colleague you trust and respect? This shouldn’t be your work best friend who you vent to at happy hour, but someone you have more of a professional relationship with. Tap this person for a confidential

meeting to ask for advice. What if the issue is just too complex for your non-HR allies to handle? It’s time to call in an

expert from the outside to coach you through it. This person may not be able to sit in the meeting with you, but they have the knowledge you need and can be your cheerleaders along the way. On The External category, you can count on the following people: A Third-Party HR Company: While your company may not have HR onsite, they may work with a third-party vendor to help with on-boarding, benefits, and payroll. Sometimes this even includes access to HR consultants who can help you navigate tricky issues. Check your benefits paperwork for a phone number you can call or a website you can check for resources. A Career Coach: Why not entrust someone who’s done this before, a lot? Many career coaches and consultants will create tailored strategies, example scripts, and go through mock conversations to make sure you’re equipped to handle any difficult situations at work. Armed with the support and guidance from your allies, it’s time to address that issue head on. Navigating workplace problems is never easy, and it’s even more difficult without HR, but by building a trusted team that can help you with various aspects of a tricky situation, you can handle just about anything.

hen your company doesn’t have a dedicated or reliable HR team (or any HR employees at all), dealing with certain workplace issues or questions can be intimidating—especially if you don’t have the best relationship with your boss or the issue in question is with your boss. This doesn’t mean you’re completely alone. All you need are allies to help guide and empower you to make the right call.
