This month’s special features include Consumer Choice Awards Africa, a business awarding event that recognizes, enhances and promotes business excellence through consumers choice by bringing all nationalities in one platform through the online voting system. We also attended Top 100 Tanzania Executives Awards, founded by Eastern Star Consulting Group with the aim to celebrate and recognize individual and corporate achievements in the year 2023, while wine lovers can enjoy Beaujolais Nouveau which was an event to celebrate wine. For art lovers, we have an exclusive feature on the Calligraphy Art Exhibition initiated by the Albayrak Group in collaboration with the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (T KA). The exhibition brought together art enthusiasts and showcased many works inspired by numerous verses of the Qur’an and hadith, representing the beauty of lines and the spirit of Islamic art. For those willing to embark on the adventure

MOUNT KILIMANJARO

MORE than 300 people are expected to climb Mount Kilimanjaro this year, through a special annual campaign which is part of the Tanzania Mainland’s Uhuru celebrations and promoting Tanzania’s tourism sector. This was stated at the end of the week by the Acting Kilimanjaro National Parks (KINAPA)’s Chief Conservator Ms Gladness Ng’umbi during the launching of the third season of the campaign which was held in Moshi, Kilimanjaro Region. In order to achieve that number this season, the leadership of KINAPA in collaboration with the organisers of this campaign has added other climbing routes, whereby apart from climbing through the Marangu Gate, participants will this year also be able to climb Mount Kilimanjaro through Machame and Lemosho gates. By using the three gates, the number of people who will climb Mount Kilimanjaro through this campaign is expected to increase from 165 in 2021 and 200 last year, to 320 climbers this year.

AIRPLANES AFRICA LIMITED

Airplanes Africa Limited (AAL), a Morogoro based aircraft manufacturer, has unveiled the first aircraft assembled in Tanzania. The aircraft skyleader 600, was unveiled at the Tanzania International Manufacturers Expo 2023 (TIMEXPO), held at the Diamond Jubilee Hall in Dar es salaam. AAL director David Grolig said the company decided to set up an ultralight aircraft manufacturing facility in Tanzania due to the country’s favorable investment climate and people’s willingness to adopt new technologies and learn new things. The Skyleader 600 is designed to accommodate two passengers, including the pilot, and is ideal for business travellers on longer journeys. AAL is the first company in Tanzania to manufacture such aircraft, which have both commercial and personal applications.

SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

Serengeti National Park has been named the leading national park in Africa, beating six other national parks from the continent in the 2023 World Travel Awards (WTA). Famed for the wildebeest migration and a vast plain that accommodates millions of wildlife, including the Big 5, Serengeti was named Africaʼs Leading National Park for the fifth time in a row, in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and now 2023. Serengeti won against Central Kalahari Game Reserve (Botswana), Etosha National Park (Namibia), Kidepo Valley National Park (Uganda), Kruger National Park (South Africa), and Masai Mara National Reserve (Kenya). The World Travel Awards, a global initiative that recognises and rewards excellence in travel and tourism, unveiled its Africa 2023 winners at the event held in Dubai.

RUAHA NATIONAL PARK

Apparently, a poachers’ well-kept secret in the middle of the sprawling Ruaha National Park in southern Tanzania is the latest hotspot every conservationist, geologist, archaeologist and enthusiast will be attracted to. Until recently when a search for poachers and other criminals encroaching on the park was mounted, none of the past and present officials had spotted the place now christened Ruaha Amazing Site. Evidently only poachers and other criminals from neighbouring villages were aware of the site they turned into their hideout when conservation rangers sought them. Conservation officials led by the park Commander Godwell Meing’ataki first saw the awe-inspiring site at Magda, south of the over 20,000-square-kilometre park, aboard a chopper.

anzibar is the semiautonomous part of Tanzania in East Africa. It is composed of the Zanzibar Archipelago in the Indian Ocean, 25–50 kilometres (16–31 mi) off the coast of the mainland, and consists of many small islands and two large ones: Unguja (the main island, referred to informally as Zanzibar) and Pemba. The capital is Zanzibar City, located on the island of Unguja. Its historic centre is Stone Town, which is a World Heritage Site. Portuguese invasion and control of the Swahili Coast in the late 16th century ended the golden age of the archipelago, although the Omani Arabs returned to 26 power less than a century later. Today, many of the winding streets

and high townhouses of old Stone Town remain unchanged and visitors can walk between the sultan’s palace, the House of Wonders, the Portuguese fort and gardens, the merchants’ houses, and the Turkish baths of the old city. Day-long spice tours to working plantations offer visitors the chance to observe the cultivation of cloves, vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon, and other spices that have made the island famous. The port city of Stone Town dominates the west coast, and although the beaches of Mangapwani, where slave caves are visible at low tide and nearby Bububu are less than half an hour’s drive away, a night or two spent on the east or north cost

is well worth the extra hour it takes to drive there. That said, the Chole Island Marine Park just off Stone Town – and nearby Prison, Grave, and Snake Islands – make a refreshing day-trip and a good break from exploring the winding passageways of the old city. On the south coast of Zanzibar lies the Menai Bay Conservation Area, a sea turtle protection area for the endangered species that come to breed on the island. Roads to the southeast coast take visitors through the Jozani Forest, home

to Zanzibar’s rare Red Colobus monkeys and a number of other primate and small antelope species.

THE ISLANDS OF ZANZIBAR

Zanzibar has many offshore islands, which provide a stunning location for a day trip or a longer stay. Boats to any of the islands off Zanzibar or Pemba can be hired easily from local fishermen. In Stone Town, ask at the ‘big tree’ opposite Mercury’s restaurant on the seafront, or arrange a day trip with one of the tour companies listed in this guide.

CHAPWANI ISLAND

A slightly more upmarket choice than Prison Island, Chapwani, or Grave island, is the site of a luxury hotel, but day visitors who come to eat and drink in the bar and restaurant are permitted. Chapwani is the site of a British naval cemetery, the final resting place of sailors who perished while serving in Zanzibar. The victims of the World War One attack on the HMS Pegasus by the German warship Konigsberg are also buried here. It’s interesting to wander around the graveyard

BAWE ISLAND

Bawe Island has some of excellent snorkeling spots. Around a 30-minute boat ride and slightly more expensive than the boat to Prison Island, it is much less visited. In 1870, the island was used to anchor the first telegraph cables to Zanzibar linking it with Aden, South Africa and the Seychelles. A further line was run across to Stone Town, into the old Extelcoms building, now the Zanzibar Serena Inn. If complete isolation and privacy is what you are after, then Bawe Tropical Island is the perfect place to stay. There are 15 private cottages scattered along the beach front, all with breathtaking panormaic views of the ocean, and all tastefully decorated in soft colours to enhance the relaxed pace of life. The beach is excellent at low tide, with unusual stone formations, and there is some

good snorkelling to be had on the island’s reef.

PRISON ISLAND

Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island is one of the most popular destinations for day trips from Stone Town. Just a short boat ride away, the island offers excellent snorkeling, a nature trail, small beach and the unusual attraction of a sanctuary for giant tortoises. Despite its name, the closest the island has come to actually being used as a prison was by its first owner, a wealthy Arab who sent unruly slaves there for discipline. In 2006, many of the islands old buildings were restored, and Changuu Private Island Paradise was opened, offering 15 deluxe cottages all on the seafront, affording maximum seclusion and privacy. There are also 12 standard rooms in the old quarantine area, with fantastic views back across to Stone Town. If swimming and snorkelling in the crystal blue waters gets too much, have a paddle in the freshwater swimming pool, or hit the ball around on the floodlit tennis court. Mathews’ restaurant offers excellent seafood lunches, and 4 course dinners, all overlooking the restored prison ruins.

CHUMBE ISLAND

Six kilometres south of Stone Town, surrounded by pristine coral reef, Chumbe Island Coral Park is one of the world’s most successful eco-tourism projects. In 1994 the reef surrounding Chumbe Island was named Tanzania’s first Marine National Park. The island itself, covered with lush mangrove forest, is a designated forest reserve. Visitors can come for the day to snorkel over the incredible coral reef, home to over 370 species of fish, turtles and dolphins. To experience Chumbe Island properly, stay the night in one of the seven ‘ecobandas’ that nestle in the forest. Each is a two-storey, private cottage constructed out of local materials and decorated with shells, driftwood and colourful local fabrics. Water and energy on Chumbe are self-sustaining and provided by nature - the roofs of the bandas and the education centre have been designed to catch and filter rainwater, which is then heated by solar power. The magic of Zanzibar Island is that it is a multi-faceted destination, offering a unique blend of idyllic beaches, intriguing history, cultural diversity, tasty cuisine, exotic spices, and rich flora and fauna.

and decipher the ages and causes of death of the servicemen – many died from tropical disease, or were killed in skirmishes with local slavers. Chapwani also has a beautiful white sandy beach and a small population of duikers (a type of miniature antelope), as well as some interesting birdlife. Kitulo National Park Serengeti of Flowers and Hiker’s Paradise

K

itulo, which has recently become a fully protected national park, is situated on the Kitulo Plateau, which forms a part of Tanzania’s Southern Highlands. It is situated in the remote southwest corner of Tanzania on the Zambian border. The area, which is known locally as ‘Bustani ya Mungu’ (The Garden of God), is also known as the Serengeti of Flowers. Kitulo hosts ‘one of the great floral spectacles of the world’.” Perched at around 2,600 meters (8,500 feet), between the rugged peaks of the Kipengere, Poroto and Livingstone Mountains, the well-watered volcanic soils of Kitulo support the largest and most important grassland community in Tanzania.

Orchids, irises, lilies, honeypeas, bellflowers, balsams and other wildflowers bloom as far as the eye can see. Kitulo hosts more than 350 species of vascular plants, including 45 varieties of terrestrial orchids, which erupt into a riotous wildflower display of breathtaking scale and diversity. Kitulo is a rare botanical marvel.

the large Kitulo Plateau in a sea of flowers. During the winter months, this is a paradise for birds, including those from Europe and North Africa.

Kitulo Attractions The park consists of three main attractions. Primary, among these is the Ndumbi River Valley, the real jewel of the protected area. Small streams flow from gentle hills and unite in a broad valley to form Ndumbi River, which is one of the main tributaries of the Great Ruaha River.

Kitulo - a botanist and hiker’s paradise - is also highly attractive to birdwatchers. Tanzania’s only population of the rare Denham’s bustard is resident, alongside a breeding colony of the endangered blue swallow and such rangerestricted species as the Mountain marsh widow, Njombe cisticola and Kipengere seedeater.

Along the Ndumbi grows the about 40 m (131 feet) high East African juniper tree, a genus of the cypress family. The Ndumbi Valley opens onto

The plateau is also home to important animal species including national and 50 regional endemics. Breeding colonies of Blue Swallow (Hirundo

atrocaerulea) and Denham’s Bustard (Neotis denhami), as well as species such as Lesser Kestrel (Falco naumanni), Pallid Harrier (Circus macrourus), Njombe Cisticola (Cisticola njombe), and Kipengere Seedeater (Serinus melanochrous), contribute to the plateau being an Important arid area. The Kitulo plateau holds the only remaining viable population of Ardeotis Denhami in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania. Things to do in Kitulo Plateau walking across the • Open grasslands to watch birds and wildflowers. • Hill climbing on the neighbouring ranges. • A half-day hike from the park across the Livingstone Mountains leads to the sumptuous Matema Beach on Lake Nyasa. (Good hiking trails exist and will soon be developed into a formal trail system.) When to go The best time to visit the park is December and April for wildflower displays. The sunnier months of September to November are more comfortable for hiking but less rewarding to botanists. Conditions are cold and foggy from June to August.

TANZANIA MOUNTAIN CLIMBING & HIKING Be one of you to smash the record

Hiking on the ‘rooftop of Africa’ is the adventure of a lifetime, and anyone from a seasoned trekker to a reasonably fit first-time enthusiast can scale the snowy peak.

Although Mt Kilimanjaro tops the list as Africa’s most famous and highest mountain, Tanzania boasts many other mountain ranges and attractive peaks. Most of the country’s mountains and volcanoes are located in the north and east of the country. They vary from the dramatic crater of Mt Meru and the active volcano of Ol Donyo Lengai to tamer options like the Usambara Mountains and the comparatively gentle slopes of the Crater Highlands.

Hiking trips and mountain climbing in Tanzania are becoming popular options for visitors not content merely observing the country from the back of a game viewing vehicle. Instead, adventurous types are taking advantage of the many trails and peaks Tanzania has to offer. MT KILIMANJARO

Above the gently rolling hills and plateau of northern Tanzania rise the snowy peaks of Mt Kilimanjaro, its slopes 60

and glaciers shimmering above the rising clouds. Kilimanjaro is located near the rising clouds. Kilimanjaro is located near the town of Moshi and is a protected area, carefully regulated for climbers to enjoy without leaving a trace of their presence. The mountain’s ecosystems are as strikingly beautiful as they are varied and diverse. On the lowland slopes, much of the mountains farmland, with coffee, banana, cassava, and maize crops grown for subsistence and cash sale. A few larger coffee farms still exist on the lower slopes, but much of the area outside the national park has been subdivided into small plots. One inside the park, thick lowland forest covers the lower altitudes and breaks into alpine meadows once the air begins to thin. Near the peak, the landscape is harsh and barren, with rocks and ices the 60 predominant features above a breathtaking African view.

Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro is the highlight of many visitors’ experience in Tanzania. Hiking on the ‘rooftop’ of Africa is the adventure of a lifetime, and anyone from a seasoned trekker to a reasonably fir first-time enthusiast can scale the snowy peak.

MT MERU

The dramatic crater of Mt Meru is often neglected in favor of its famous neighbor to the east, but a visit to this spectacular mountain, located within Arusha National Park, is an unforgettable experience. Its lower slopes are covered in dense highland forest,

where colobus monkeys play and buffalo graze concealed beneath the thick foliage. The extinct volcano’s extensive base gives way to a perfectly formed crater, and another internal crater with sharp, sheer cliffs. An ash cone forms subsidiary peak and the Momela lakes and Ngurdoto Crater are visible from the slopes of the Mountain.

EASTERN ARC MOUNTAIN RANGE

Stretching from the Taita Hills of southern Kenya to the southern highlands of Tanzania, the Eastern Arc Mountain

CRATER HIGHLANDS

Rising up from the floors of the Rift Valley, the Crater Highlands form a lush chain of mountains and volcanoes that includes the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the surrounding Maasai tribal lands. Hiking safaris take visitors from Ngorongoro Crater to the foot of Ol Donyo Lengai and offer a chance to see some of the most spectacular and stunning scenery in Tanzania. Exploring this littlevisited wilderness is the hiking adventure of a lifetime. Within the crater rim, large herds of zebra and wildebeest graze nearby while sleeping lions laze in the sun. At dawn, the endangered black rhino return to the thick cover of the crater forests after grazing on dewladen grass in the morning mist. Just outside the crater’s ridge, tall Maasai herd their cattle and goats over green pastures through the highland slopes, living alongside the wildlife as they have for centuries.

MONDULI MOUNTAINS

Range has some of the oldest geological activity on the continent. Estimated to be at least 100 million years old with some formations up to 600 million years old – the relative stability of their climate means that the area hosts a surprising array of biodiversity, from plant and insect life, to spectacular bird species.

Just a few hours drive from Arusha, the Monduli Mountains make a lovely day trip or can be part of a longer hiking itinerary. Maasai pastoralists herd their cattle along the slopes and cultural tourism programmes give visitors the opportunity to learn about traditional medicines and local Maasai culture. The surrounding views of the Rift Valley, Mt Meru and Mt Kilimanjaro are incredible.

MOUNT HANANG

LIVINGSTONE MOUNTAINS

The Livingstone Mountains are a low-altitude chain that border Lake Nyasa. Remote and difficult to reach, climbing is largely uncharted and for most part the area remains unexplored by trekkers and guides.

Remotely located on somewhat bumpy tracks 200 km southwest of Arusha, Mt Hanang’s extinct volcanic crater makes for a stunning feature above the undulating plains. The two day climb takes trekkers through numerous tribal areas, including the land of the semi-nomadic Barabaig, recognizable by their goatskin garments.

OL DONYO LENGAI

Overlooking Lake Natron and the bush land of Kenya to the north, Ol Donyo Lengai, which means ‘the home of God’ in Maasai, is an active volcano and one of Tanzania’s most spectacular and undiscovered climbs. The volcano erupts sporadically, sending streams of grey lava down the crater rim and spitting hot ash high into the air. The climb, undertaken over night so hikers can experience sunrise over the Rift Valley escarpment, is highly challenging.

PARE MOUNTAINS

Part of the Eastern Arc range in north-eastern Tanzania, the remote Pare Mountains are extremely rewarding to the avid trekker searching for hiking trails off the beaten path. Home to the Pare tribe, agriculturalists and pastoralists who have largely retained their traditional way of life, a hike through the Pare Mountains takes visitors through local villages and beautiful forests and offers the chance to see a little-visited part of the country. 62

Located west of Dar es Salaam, the Udzungwa Mountains rise up from the western edge of the Selous Game Reserve. Vervet monkeys play high in the forest canopy, and small forest antelope can be viewed at the right time of day. Botanical diversity is exceptional, and the park is host to a large number of endangered bird species. Views from the peaks of the mountains, towards the Selous Game Reserve and the distant Indian Ocean coast, are incredible and well worth the effort. Five distinct trails cover the forests and mountain peaks within the park, and offer varying levels of difficulty for everyone from novices to experienced trekkers. Better yet, there are no roads through the Udzungwa Mountains National Park, so hikers have the area all to themselves.

ULUGURU MOUNTAINS

62

Overlooking the agricultural area around Morogoro, the Uluguru Mountains are part of the Eastern Arc range and are named after the Luguru tribe, a matrilineal group that farms on its verdant slopes. The area has some of the oldest forest in Africa, and because the ecosystem has remained undisturbed by climatic and geographical changes for an estimated 25 million years, hiking in the area is particularly rewarding. A plethora of endemic bird and insect species are found here, nut permits are required to reach most of the peaks and permission must be sought in advance.

USAMBARA MOUNTAINS

The Usambara Mountains are part of the Eastern Arc chain in the north-eastern part of the country. Their western and eastern ranges are divided by a 4 km wide valley of small villages and farms, and larger peaks. Day walks and overnight treks take visitors through some of the most concentrated area of biodiversity in Africa. Bird watching is specially rewarding, and the views from the mountaintops stretch over the Maasai Steppe and, on a clear day, as far as the Indian Ocean.

CREATE A BASIC MARKETING PLAN ^ŝdž ĂƐLJ ^ƚĞƉƐ ƚŽ ^ƵĐĐĞƐƐ z EE/^ ^KDD Z addresses?

3

. What are you Going To Tell Them? Write a marketing message directed specifically to your target customer. Focus on the benefits (not features) you offer. Concentrate on one thing: what’s in it for them!

Use the Six-Step Process Below to Create Your Basic Marketing Plan;

1

. What Do You Sell? Clearly define your product, including the features and benefits. Make a list of each product or service you offer, and under each one, list the corresponding benefits to the consumer.

2

. To Whom Do You Sell? Create a detailed customer profile. If you market directly to consumers, list demographics: age, gender, lifestyle, location, preferences, interests, etc. Where do they go? What do they read? Listen to? Watch? If you market to businesses, describe your ideal business client, include the size of company, number of employees, gross sales, location, etc. What do they want? What concerns and challenges do they face, especially those your product

4

. Where Are You N o w ? You need this as a benchmark for future tracking. Make a note of current marketing activities, the costs involved and, if possible, the revenue they generate.

5

. Where Do You Want To Be And When?Visualize your business one, two and five years from now. What will it look like? Be specific. Consider 76 what changes will need to take

76 76

place to achieve the future you want for this business.

6

. How Do You Plan to Get There ?

Define specific, realistic marketing goals. Plan how you will measure the results. Decide which marketing strategies you will use, for example: networking, cold calling, mailings, advertising, website, emails, & promotional events. Select two or three you could use to jump-start your marketing. Brainstorm the best tactics for each of the strategies you’ve selected. For example, if you chose networking as a strategy, your tactics might be to attend certain events each week, revise your 30-second commercial and produce marketing materials to hand out. Assign time and dollar resources for each strategy you’ve chosen. Follow your plan, regularly review progress, track the results and modify where necessary. When something produces good results, stick with it. If it doesn’t work, stop or adapt it. By writing one step a day or one step each week, you’ll soon have a simple written marketing plan to guide you and ensure that you get the best return on your marketing dollar as you grow your company in the right direction.
