Thank you to our Sponsors:

Orange City Life is grateful to the following sponsors for their ongoing support over many years. These sponsorships, among others things, have enabled us to bring our readers a lot more enjoyment to our publications than would otherwise be possible. In return, we ask you to please support them as often as you’re able.

It has been a week of beautiful winter weather here in Orange! Crisp, frosty mornings, but plenty of blue sky and sun-filled days. Since finding myself living far from the hot arid climate I grew up in, I’ve slowly come to appreciate winter weather like this. The cold doesn’t bother me as much as the lack of sunshine does on those dreary grey days or weeks. It’s only then my thoughts start drifting back out west.

Speaking of winter, we are now just over a week away from the launch of this year’s Winter Fire Festival. It all kicks off with the Millthorpe Fire Fair on Friday, August 4, but there are two packed weekends of activities planned, with events for all the family. You can find the whole program on the Orange360 website.

Orange’s beautiful Cook Park turns 150 years old this November and as part of the celebrations, Council has put out a call for people to upload their own photos and memories of special occasions in the heritage-listed park. The photos will become part of a photographic archive of the park’s history and also be displayed during a picnic day planned for November 25. See inside for more.

The start of August is traditionally the date we celebrate the “Horses’ Birthday” and on Wednesday, August 2, Orange’s Riding for the Disabled (RDA) is inviting the community to join them at their Clifton Grove riding centre for an open day. It’s a chance to see what the RDA volunteers do and, of course, a chance to meet their stable of horses. The riding centre is located at 16a The Overflow, Clifton Grove, and will be open from 9.30am to 2.30pm.

Until next week!

Get your hands dirty this Sunday for National Tree Day!

Orange City Council is inviting the community to join them in planting 800 trees to celebrate National Tree Day this Sunday, July 30.

Established in 1996, National Tree Day is an initiative of Planet Ark. It has grown into Australia’s largest community tree planting and nature care event, with more than 26 million trees planted since it began.

The aim for this Sunday’s community planting event at Gosling Creek is to plant 800 native trees, shrubs and grasses on the day to enhance the biodiversity in the area and provide habitat for native wildlife.

Orange Environmental Sustainability Community Committee Chair, Cr David Mallard said the event had received strong support from the community in previous years and he is hoping to see a good crowd on Sunday “Last year’s event was a huge success, with 150 people planting 1100 native plants at Lake Canobolas and I hope we get the same response from volunteers this year,” Cr Mallard said.

“In the past five years, more than 5000 native plants have been planted around Orange on National Tree Day.”

“I encourage all community members to come along and plant a tree for our beautiful environment. It’s a great chance to give back and it’s an activity that the whole family can enjoy.”

The planting will take place from 10am to 1pm and there will be a barbecue afterwards Parking will be available on the corner of Forest and Bloomfield Roads, and signs will be in place to guide people to the planting area.

Holes will be pre-dug to make planting easier and all tools will be provided on the day as well as a pair of gloves. But don’t forget to wear appropriate outdoor clothing, sunscreen, a hat and covered shoes.

Legacy Centenary Torch Relay in Orange this Saturday

This Saturday, July 29, local war widows, veterans and legatees will carry a torch through the streets of Orange to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Legacy.

The Legacy Centenary Torch Relay started out in Pozières, France on April 23. It has since travelled to Menin Gate, Belgium, London, Western Australia, South Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland and northern NSW.

In Orange, the torch will depart the Botanic Gardens at 10am. From there, 20 locals will carry the torch in turn, the route taking them down Hill Street to Mathews Avenue, past Bletchington Public School, turning onto Peisley then Margaret Streets, crossing the railway line and passing the Romani Barracks. Then

turning onto McLachlan, Dalton, Nile and March Streets, the torch will be carried past the memorial in Newman Park to William Street, Dalton Street, then Anson Street to the Orange Memorial Hall, and along Byng Street to Robertson Park where a cauldron will be lit. The torch is expected to arrive in Robertson Park at about midday

Following the lighting of the cauldron, there will also be an unveiling of a plaque at the nearby Legacy House to commemorate the 100th anniversary.

From Orange, the Legacy Centenary Torch will head to Forbes, continuing its journey to all 45 Legacy Clubs, before finishing at the founding home of Legacy in Melbourne on October 13.

Community asked to share Cook Park memories ahead of 150TH anniversary celebrations

Orange’s heritage-listed Cook Park will notch up its 150th anniversary this November and people are being asked to share their memories of the park as part of the celebrations.

The 4.5-hectare block bordered by Summer, Clinton, Kite and Sampson streets was o cially proclaimed a park on November 30, 1873, although it was only in 1882, that it was named Cook Park, after Captain James Cook.

Laid out in a traditional Victorian design with straight paths and rows of trees, much of the original design is still in place today.

Orange City Council is planning a picnic day in Cook Park to honour the milestone anniversary, but they are also hoping to create a community-sourced photographic

archive recognising the park’s special place in the lives of so many people in Orange.

“Cook Park and the country that it occupies has played host to many significant moments for generations of Orange families,” Orange Mayor, Councillor Jason Hamling said.

“From community events and family occasions to a casual picnic or quiet stroll, Cook Park holds many fond memories for the city’s residents.”

Members of the community are being encouraged to share their photos, memories and stories of Cook Park in the lead-up to the anniversary in November.

The material will be added to the

Recollect Central West website, an online collection of heritage material relating to people, places and events of the Central West.

Images will also be displayed on a screen in the Bastick Cottage as part of the celebrations, alongside an exhibition featuring people who shaped Cook Park.

The community picnic day will be held on Saturday, November 25, and feature live music and dance performances, food vendors, a cake cutting and a commemorative tree planting.

Orange City Council’s Parks, Trees and Waterways Committee Chair, Cr Mel McDonell encouraged everyone to join in the celebrations.

“This is a great opportunity to celebrate everything that we love about Cook Park, from its history and heritage significance to its present-day appeal for local families and visitors,” Cr McDonell said.

People wishing to share their photos and memories of Cook Park should email their material to heritage@orange.nsw.gov.au

BnH Orange showing why locally made is best for 45 years

For more than 45 years, BnH has been making high-quality blinds, awnings, screen doors, shade sails, and more, right here in Orange.

Taking the reins of this long-running family business, new owner Estelle King is working to make sure BnH is satisfying customers in Orange for decades to come.

BnH was founded in 1978 by Estelle’s parents, Bruce and Hazel King, as a small backyard business making flyscreens and repairing blinds. Even as the business grew and expanded into new premises, increasing its manufacturing capability, it has always remained a family concern.

“I remember having Venetian blinds on the clothesline at home, that’s how Mum used to wash them. And I remember her doing repairs on the old sewing machine in the garage,” Estelle said, who, like her siblings, has had a lot of hands-on experience in all aspects of the business.

“I worked within the business full-time in the manufacturing side from 2001-2011,” Estelle said. “I spent ten years learning out the back, not in the office, so I’ve made awnings, urban tracks, Romans, I’ve done all that.”

Estelle left the family business in the hands of her sister Florence and brother Bill and moved to Dubbo, where she worked in an accounting

firm while gaining a Bachelor of Accounting and Human Resources.

Moving back to Orange five years ago, she was asked to come back into the family business in an administration capacity.

But then earlier this year, Estelle took the big step of purchasing BnH from her brother Bill and already there is another family member keen to carry on the family legacy.

“My son is a big part of why I’ve taken it on,” Estelle said. “He’s now 27 and already does a lot of our installs and he wants to carry on the business eventually.

“It’s very important to me to continue my Dad’s legacy. He was well-known and he did quality work. He always did what he could for customers, the customers were always his focus and that’s very much my focus and very much important to me that reputation continues here at BnH.”

While BnH has long been known for highquality blinds, shade sails, screens and awnings, Estelle said, people are still surprised by the broad range of their products, many made right here in Orange.

“We actually make stuff right here,” Estelle said, pointing to the workshop behind their Leewood Drive showroom.

“And not all our customers know the range of things we do. We don’t just do blinds, but we do doors, security screens, retractable screens, Urban Track blinds, custom awnings and H Slat

– we’ve had people tell us they thought they had to go to Sydney for that.”

Being manufactured locally means that BnH products aren’t limited to standardised sizes and brands, but can be custom-made to exactly what the customer wants. They’ve even been able to accommodate out-of-square doors and windows, Estelle said.

“And if there are ever any issues, we are right here,” she said. “I’ve heard stories of people waiting weeks to get problems fixed but because we make them here, we can be there to help you the very next day.”

A growing side of the BnH business is the installation of security screens and roller shutters, Estelle said.

BnH is associated with the National Security Screen Door Association and has the master licence and individual licences to sell, manufacture and install security products.

“With all the break-ins happening in our area we are finding at the moment that a lot of our work is installing ScreenGuard security doors and screens, and roller shutters as well,” Estelle said.

“Repairs are another big area for us. We get a lot of people who bring other company’s blinds or other products here because there’s no one else around who can repair them but us.”

No matter what your needs; if it’s doors, windows or outside areas – BnH has you covered. Give Estelle and the team a call today.

City clubs helping out their country cousins

Representatives from some of Sydney’s largest clubs piled into the Orange ExServices’ Club courtesy bus on Thursday, July 20, and paid a visit to colleagues in communities impacted by the devastating floods late last year.

Back in February, Orange Ex-Services’ Club hosted an industry luncheon that brought in over $200,000 for flood victims in Eugowra, Cudal, Molong and their community clubs.

Last Thursday, some of the major donors from this event — which included representatives from Mounties Group, Ryde-

Eastwood Leagues, Campbelltown Catholic Club and Manly Leagues – travelled out to speak with local clubs and community members, hearing first-hand about the impact of the floods and to brainstorm initiatives to make best use of the money raised.

“The great thing about clubs is it is quite a close-knit community,” Manly Leagues CEO Julien Bova said in Orange on Thursday.

“And where there’s clubs or just communities in general out there that are a ected by natural disasters or anything… It is great that clubs tend to

come together and do what we can to support the community whether it’s raising money, or volunteering our time ourselves or leveraging some of our contacts or suppliers.

“I’m personally quite proud to work in clubs, just to see the kind of things that we can do to help communities and people in need.”

Campbelltown Catholic Club CEO Michael Lavorato admitted that he hadn’t ever heard of Cudal prior to the flood appeal, but said there was no hesitation from his club’s board or members to help colleagues and

communities in need.

“Irrespective of whether you’re in the regions or in the city when the call came out for support we had no hesitation in jumping in and supporting the clubs out here that were doing it tough,” Mr Lavorato said.

“The story is universal throughout the club community, whether you are a big club like ours with 50,000 members or a club in a town with a thousand population, it really is a unique community and we help our own.

“Helping clubs, helping communities is what we are all about.”

Beckie Plant always loved children’s books and revelled in the imaginative worlds of authors such as Dr Seuss and Roald Dahl. She’d always dreamed of writing her own one day, but it was only when her children had left the nest and a global pandemic forced everyone at home that Beckie finally followed her dream.

“I’ve just always loved children’s books – I just think they open up a whole new world,” Beckie said, recalling warm memories of evenings at home reading to her own children.

“I’d always sit there with my children and say one day I’d write a book. I’d sit there and make up stories in my head, but never put any down on paper,” Beckie said. But then along came a global pandemic, and with Beckie’s children now all grown up, she had no more excuses to stop her from putting pen to paper.

“When COVID came along, I just sat there

Beckie planting the seeds of self-esteem

one day and, with my children much older and o at uni, I thought, Well now what am I going to do? I worked full-time from home, but there was still a lot of the rest of the day to fill, so I thought well let’s see if I can do it,” she said.

Chipping away little by little, day after day, Beckie has just published her first children’s book, Amazing Like You.

Written for 5-12-year-olds, Amazing Like You makes use of Beckie’s knowledge of art therapy, development trauma and youth mental health counselling.

She said the book is designed to grow identity and self-esteem by helping them realise all the qualities that make them amazing.

“This book talks about the strengths that kids have, and it talks about how we teach our kids why these things make them fabulous — then it can help them to remember why they are fabulous,” Beckie explains.

“Children hear the messages that we give them. Kids move into the character that we give them. So if they’re called the naughty one, we unknowingly give children those characters, and they slowly become those characters.

“The story uses rhyme, fun and imagination to not listen to the negative things, but instead hear, identify, discuss and hold onto the positive ones instead.”

It may have taken years for Beckie’s first book to see the light of day, but she already has a second ready to go.

The Orange Library is hosting a book launch for Beckie Plant’s Amazing Like You on Thursday, August 17, at 5pm. It is a free event but bookings are necessary. Book now at Eventbrite.

You’re in secure hands with Orange Lock and Key

Locked out of your home or office? Concerned about security? Orange Lock and Key is a brand new mobile locksmithing business that’s here to help you 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

range Lock and Key may be a new name in business in the Central West, but proprietor Jesse Kramer has more than a decade of experience in the locksmithing trade.

“I started when I was 15, as soon as I left year 10,” Jesse said, who made a point early in his career to seek experience in as many different aspects of the trade as he could.

“I learnt early that each locksmith operates very differently; different products, different machinery and the way they do things, so I branched out and have worked at multiple different locksmiths in Sydney,” he said.

“I’ve worked all around Sydney and the metropolitan area, and I’ve worked on large contracts from a young age — I used to service all the NSW fire stations all around Sydney. It was all about gaining knowledge in the trade as a whole, rather than being

Orestricted to one area.”

Jesse relocated to Orange five years ago, jumping at an opportunity to buy a house and settle in the Colour City with his young family.

Seeing there’s a real need for another locksmith to service Orange and the surrounding area, Jesse decided to go out on his own and he’s excited to be back doing the work he knows and loves.

“Locksmithing is my passion. It’s what I know and Orange is quite a big town and there were only two locksmiths, so I saw a market for it and thought I might as well jump in,” he said.

Jesse is now available for all general locksmithing work and at very competitive rates.

“With the cost of living at the moment, people are looking carefully at where their money is going, so I want to make sure my rates are fair and affordable,” Jesse said, who is also making a point of offering

Servicing Orange & The Central West

discounted rates to pensioners.

Whether it’s installing new locks, rekeying old locks or better securing your windows, Jess has extensive experience and knowledge of home security and is happy to give advice.

“It’s about pointing people in the right direction of proper security and not just being there just to make a dollar,” he said.

“But the biggest thing for me is that I’m very honest with my customers. At the end of the day, a lock is a deterrent and you can never fully guarantee someone can’t break in, but we can try to deter the best we can and that’s my aim of the game.”

Orange Lock and Key is available for all general locksmithing needs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in Orange, Molong, Blayney and all places in between.

Automotive locksmithing services are not yet available, but keep an eye out as Jesse says equipping himself and jumping in the car game is his next priority.

Kerry Ferguson’s dream is for Molong to have a thriving art community, like that in Orange. She is an artist who’s passionate about nature and natural themes, and is now ready to throw more love and energy at her art, because her work in agri-business has previously gotten in the way of pursuing her passion.

“I’ve decided to focus more on art now than I have a little while ago,” she said. She has exhibited occasionally in the past, and currently has work on display at the Threatened Species exhibition, Western Gallery, Wellington.

But she wants more… for herself and her fellow Molong artists. So she has kickstarted the Molong Art Group, which

Kerry paints bright future for Molong Art Group

meets fortnightly. The group will be a way for like-minded people to get together, and learn from each other. “It’s going to be a combination of meeting up on regular occasions, and then we will invite people to come and give classes once we get more established, and hopefully we can book in with people who are touring the region too,” Kerry said.

The art group is open to artists of any level (including beginners), and any medium of art. “I think absolutely anyone can be an artist so anyone who wants to come along is welcome,” Kerry said.

She is looking forward to the future of the group and its collective creativity. With enough members, the group will host their own exhibitions, says Kerry.

“We’re looking at putting in art, as a group, into the Molong

Show and, because I’m going to open a gallery, and the RSL has some space, we’re definitely hoping to have a few exhibitions.”

Kerry’s big dream – hopefully to become a reality soon – is to open the doors of an art gallery in the old bank building in Molong before Christmas.

“I think the town would really benefit from having something in town — to build that momentum, to be a bit of a cultural hub. I think that in order to open a gallery in Molong, we need to have a thriving artistic community like Orange,” Kerry said.

The Molong Art Group meets every second Tuesday at the Molong RSL Club from 6.30pm. To get involved, contact Kerry Ferguson at admin@dangerousbeauty.com.au

EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGIST DAVID STELLING on better movement as a way to better health and wellbeing

Orange Family Physiotherapy’s Dave Stelling is effusive about the benefits of exercise physiology. Not that he sees it as an instant fix or cure-all, but what excites him is being able to educate and empower people to make life-long changes for better movement and better health.

Dave, an accredited exercise physiologist, joined Orange Family Physiotherapy in June and has since been using his skills to help clients make changes for improved health and wellbeing.

Exercise physiology is a long-established allied health profession that is accredited through Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA), but Dave said he still finds that some people are unsure about just what it is that he does.

“The main role of an EP, or exercise physiologist, is… we’re trying to create movement or exercise to promote health or rehabilitation for a broad range of different conditions,” Dave said.

“It can go from lifestyle coaching for chronic conditions such as Type 2 Diabetes, Hypertension or cardiovascular disease, to acute conditions such as, say, someone who’s

had an ACL Injury. They’ve had surgery and now they want to get back into sport, or just help with rehabilitation in general — we can give them tailored exercises to help them along their way.”

As an exercise physiologist, Dave has run group sessions for diabetes patients, educating them on exercises that will fit into their lifestyle, improve blood flow, balance, and reduce the risk of falls or injuries.

He also works with patients with neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s and Multiple Sclerosis, helping them with exercises to maintain or improve their physical conditioning.

But as an exercise physiologist, Dave’s training enables him to assess and then tailor exercises to suit a client’s particular condition.

“It’s not just a one-size-fits-all. It’s trying to find what suits from person to person,” Dave said.

“For example, if I have someone with a shoulder injury, I’ll assess their shoulder’s range of motion, what causes pain, is there a way we can avoid that pain and reduce that pain, how can we resolve this issue and progress you forward to see improvement and get you back to doing what you enjoy.”

Or in the case of chronic back pain, Dave said an assessment may find a muscular imbalance and by targeting particular muscle groups

through specific exercises it could reduce the stress on the problem area.

Prehabilitation is another large part of his workload, Dave said. Starting people on an exercise program before they undergo surgery so that they are better placed for a quicker recovery.

But for Dave, health education and lifestyle coaching, helping people make those long-term changes, is what he sees as his most important role.

“We’re not only about helping with recovery and giving exercises but also trying to give useful information, educate people so they can take that into their life,” Dave explained.

“A lot of people get treatment, think that’s done and then they get another injury 12 months later and are back to square one, but if we educate people and put a plan in place – it might take a bit longer, but it’s going to help you in the long run.

“So that’s what really drew me to exercise physiology; it’s about that education, it’s about giving people the tools to help themselves instead of me just going here is a solution.”

David Stelling is now providing exercise physiology services for Work Cover, Medicare, NDIS, DVA and private clients.

Dirty Janes promises Orange a fabulous VINTAGE SUMMER

Vintage lovers rejoice! Bowral’s much-loved and iconic vintage market Dirty Janes is opening a new location right here in the Colour City.

The new Orange location, in the former PCYC building in Byng Street, is about to undergo renovations and is due to open early 2024. December/January. Not just a retail store, Dirty Janes Orange will be a complete indoor market with room for almost 100 individual stallholders selling everything from homewares and furniture to clothes and collectables.

“We bring in people who do fabulous vintage wares, whether they’re artisans or they make furniture or they have a fabulous collection they want to sell,” says Jane Crowley, who founded Dirty Janes along with her father Athol Salter. “Really anything that is beautiful homewares and has a vintage vibe about it, I’m interested in bringing them on board.”

Dirty Janes was created to give small business owners and artisans a way to have a retail presence without being bogged down in the day-to-day running of the business.

“If they’re an artist or make fabulous vintage clothing, they don’t want to sit behind a shop counter five days a week. They want to be

able to do what they’re really good at, which is making vintage clothing or painting or whatever it might be. That’s where Dirty Janes comes in,” explains Jane.

“We take care of all of the business aspects, the selling and the publicity. We’ll negotiate with customers and ship things across the country, and that allows them just to really concentrate on the artistic side of their businesses.”

In the 15 years since the original Bowral store opened, Dirty Janes has become a much-loved destination for lovers of vintage, drawing in people from all over the country. A drawcard is being open seven days a week, and having its own coffee shop. They also do wine-meetsfashion events. Crowley says they like to embed themselves within a creative community, and is excited about doing that in Orange.

“People often describe our Bowral store as their happy place. Because they can wander around and experience all of this creativity around them and they get completely inspired, which is fabulous,” says Jane, who personally interviews potential stallholders and curates the mix of vendors and products you will find in Dirty Janes.

“My job, putting a Dirty Janes together, is that when a customer walks in they have to experience surprise and delight. They have to walk from space to space going, ‘Wow, look at that!’ ‘That was completely unexpected!’

“There’s got to be this feeling of ‘Wow’ and that it changes almost daily with new stock coming in, so I’ve just gotta keep going back.”

Orange will be the third Dirty Janes location when it opens this summer; a second location opened in Canberra in 2020. “Orange ticks all the boxes and it’s a lovely place.”

As the opening date for Orange gets closer Jane has already been meeting with potential stallholders from Orange and all over the Central West.

“I’ve been eyeing-off Orange for quite a while and we’re really excited to come up there,” says Jane, who is confident Dirty Janes Orange will have something for virtually anyone who walks in their door.

“Whether they collect old LP records, or they want a vintage skirt, or they want a new dining table, we really try to make sure that everything is available!”

David Paton Donates Inspiring Book to Orange City Library

Local author David Paton’s uplifting, encouraging and inspiring book is now available for borrowing from Orange City Library.

In 2001, his life changed forever when he sustained a brain injury in a car accident during his final year of schooling.

David’s book Reclaiming life after brain injury: How to follow your dreams even when life is hard is the story of his recovery from that accident. It is an inspiring story of overcoming challenges, despite the obstacles in your way.

“I want to give people hope that there can be life after a serious life-changing event, such as suffering

a brain injury. I have a passion for helping other people and that is where my heart lies,” said David, who grew up in Mudgee and now resides in Orange.

“My hope is that by telling my story, I can inspire anyone who has experienced any setback in life to make a start on improving their situation and to do so with determination, so they do not give up.”

Both a reference copy of David’s book and a borrowing copy can be found in the Biography section at Orange City Library.

Orange’s heritage listed Cook Park will notch up its 150th anniversary in November and members of the community are invited to join in the celebrations to honour the occasion. The celebrations will include a picnic and the development of a community sourced photographic archive.

Orange Mayor Jason Hamling said Cook Park was a place of historical significance and a special place to many people.

“Cook Park and the country that it occupies has played host to many significant moments for generations of Orange families,” Cr Hamling said.

“From community events and family occasions to a casual picnic or quiet stroll, Cook Park holds many fond memories for the city’s residents.”

The 4.5-hectare block bordered by Summer, Clinton, Kite and Sampson streets was proclaimed a park on 30 November 1873 and officially named Cook Park, after Captain James Cook, in 1882. It was laid out in a traditional Victorian design with straight paths and rows of trees. Much of the original design is still in place today.

Orange City Council is encouraging members of the community to share their

photos, memories and stories in the lead up to the anniversary. The material will be added to the Recollect Central West website, an online collection of heritage material relating to the people, places and events of the Central West.

Images will also be displayed on a screen in the Bastick Cottage as part of the celebrations, alongside an exhibition featuring the people who shaped Cook Park.

The community picnic day will be held in the park from 10am to noon on Saturday 25 November, featuring music and dance performances, food vendors, a cake

Orange City Council will celebrate National Tree Day on Sunday 30 July with a community planting event at Gosling Creek.

The aim is to plant 800 native trees, shrubs and grasses on the day to enhance biodiversity in the area and provide habitat for native wildlife.

Orange Environmental Sustainability Community Committee Chair, Cr David Mallard said the event had received strong support from the community in previous years.

“Last year’s event was a huge success, with 150 people planting 1100 native plants at Lake Canobolas, and I hope we get the same response from volunteers this year,” Cr Mallard said.

“In the past five years, more than 5000 native plants have been planted around Orange on National Tree Day.”

“I encourage all community members to come along and plant a tree for our beautiful environment. It’s a great

cutting and commemorative tree planting.

People wishing to share their photos and memories of Cook Park should email their material to heritage@orange.nsw.gov.au

chance to give back and it’s an activity that the whole family can enjoy.”

The event will be held from 10am to 1pm and a barbecue and refreshments will be provided afterwards for participants to thank them for their hard work.

Parking will be available on the corner of Forest and Bloomfield roads and signs will be in place to guide people to the planting area.

People are invited to wear appropriate outdoor clothing, sunscreen, a hat and covered shoes.

Holes will be pre-dug to make planting easier and all tools will be provided on the day as well as a pair of gloves.

Established in 1996, National Tree Day is an initiative of Planet Ark. It has grown into Australia’s largest community tree planting and nature care event, with more than 26 million trees planted since it began.

INQUIRY WILL SHINE A SPOTLIGHT ON SHOCKING INSURANCE PRACTICES IN DISASTER-HIT COMMUNITIES

Iwelcome the announcement that the federal government will launch a parliamentary inquiry into the response of insurers to the 2022 storm and flood events including those that occurred in Central Western NSW.

Since this disaster hit our region, we have heard many stories of heartache and heartbreak from local residents and business people who have had their homes and livelihoods destroyed.

Communities like Eugowra, Molong, Canowindra, Cudal and Wellington were devastated by November’s storm and flood events.

The rebuilding and recovery process has been made much harder, and the tragedy much worse, by the cold-hearted and shocking response of insurers to policyholders.

The anger in our communities is white hot, and I don’t think we are alone, with other regions across Australia left reeling from the callous conduct of insurance companies. From long delays in claims processing, to widespread knockbacks. It’s taken a massive toll across our region.

The reality is that there is a huge power imbalance between policy holders and insurance companies.

At the end of the day, if a policy holder wants to fight a knockback from an insurer, they’re going to need to fork out big dollars for an expert hydrology report and also a solicitor. If you’ve lost everything or your business is in ruins, there is just no prospect of fighting back.

The stories of insurers trying to do the right thing are sadly few and far between.

Australians expect insurers to be assessing claims in a generous and kind-hearted way, nothing less.

make sure the pain that insurance companies have inflicted on our communities is not repeated in others.

I’m hoping that this inquiry can shine a spotlight on the experience of our local residents and that they will get a chance to tell their stories on a national stage so that other communities won’t have to go through what we have endured.

ORANGE LIONS BARBEQUE

Lots of customers last weekend at the Orange Lions Club BBQ!

Thanks to everyone who supported the Lions in their important community work.

It’s great to be a Lion! can

The stories that emerged from recent public meetings I’ve held on insurance claims have been deeply troubling.

I am grateful to the Prime Minister and also to the Minister for Financial Services and Assistant Treasurer for answering our communities’ calls for an inquiry.

When I asked the Prime Minister in Question Time in May whether he would support an inquiry, he indicated that he would consider it and he has done what he said he would do.

I’m hoping that this inquiry will be a watershed moment in the way that insurers deal with disasterhit policy holders.

Change needs to come from this immense tragedy and devastation.

I think it’s important that the Minister has not only travelled to our area to hear first-hand what our residents have been through but that he has also come and delivered a tangible result. It’s certainly more than just a photo opportunity.

MILLTHORPE MUSEUM MEMORIAL WALL LUNCH

On the weekend, I had a wonderful time at the Golden Memories Museum at Millthorpe.

The Millthorpe Village Committee and the Millthorpe and District Historical Society joined forces to apply for a Saluting Their Service grant from the previous federal government to improve the war memorial. This included adding further names of those from Millthorpe who have served our country in various conflicts, and putting up a new flag pole.

Last Saturday 15 new names were officially added to the memorial. It was a day to remember, as families from all over the state came to honour their loved ones.

One new name on the wall was that of Colin Flatters OAM who was born in Millthorpe.

Colin did two tours of Vietnam and served in the artillery during the Battle of Long Tan. Colin spoke of his military experience during the ceremony.

Another highlight of the day was catching up with Irene Chapman who celebrated her 101st birthday last Saturday. A very happy birthday Irene!

Congratulations to the Millthorpe and District Historical Society President Bruce Chapman, Secretary Jacki Irvine, and also to Millthorpe Village Committee President Nick Anagnostaras and their teams.

It was certainly a day to remember and to honour those who’ve served our nation with such distinction.

WHY IS THE VOICE NECCESSARY?

It’s hard to believe, but Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are not recognised in our nation’s founding document. This wrong must be made right. The Voice provides that recognition in a meaningful way.

The aim of the Voice is to get better outcomes for Indigenous Australians by ensuring they have a say on issues that affect them. For example in housing, education, health and jobs.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have lower life expectancy, higher suicide rates, higher infant mortality rates, and worse educational outcomes than non-Indigenous Australians. The gap isn’t closing, and despite well-intentioned governments, the current approach isn’t working. We need to change it up. The Voice is about listening and getting positive, tangible outcomes in communities around Australia.

IS THE VOICE LEGALLY AND CONSTITUTIONALLY SOUND?

Yes. A host of constitutional law experts and organisations have given the Voice the tick of approval as being legally and constitutionally sound, including:

• Former High Court Chief Justice Robert French

• Former High Court Justice Kenneth Hayne

• Leading constitutional law barrister Bret Walker SC

• Leading constitutional law professors

• The Solicitor General of Australia

• New South Wales Bar Association

• The Law Society of New South Wales

• The Law Council of Australia

• The University of Sydney Law School

• Flinders University Law school

• The University of New South Wales

• Adelaide Law School

• University of Queensland constitutional lawyers

• Gilbert & Tobin Lawyers

WILL

THE VOICE BE A THIRD CHAMBER OF PARLIAMENT?

No. Myth Busted. The Voice can’t and won’t introduce bills or run programs. It will be subject to the rules set for it by Parliament.

DOES THE VOICE GIVE ANYONE SPECIAL RIGHTS?

No. Myth busted. The Voice does not give any group any special rights. It’s an advisory body that doesn’t give any rights to anyone. This has been confirmed by eminent constitutional lawyers and former High Court judges.

WILL THE VOICE MOVE RECONCILIATION FORWARD?

WILL THE VOICE “GUM UP” THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT WITH COURT CHALLENGES AND STOP BUDGETS, CHANGE ANZAC DAY, TAKE LAND, BAN FISHING, STOP NUCLEAR-POWERED SUBMARINE CONTRACTS OR CREATE A SEPARATE STATE?

No. Myth busted. Leading constitutional law barrister Bret Walker SC has described claims the Voice would lead to endless court challenges and the “gumming up” of the wheels of government as “nonsense” and “too silly for words”. It’s an advisory body that will be subject to the rules Parliament makes for it. It won’t have the power to ban anything. These wild claims are ludicrous.

WHO WILL BE ON THE VOICE?

Members of the Voice will be chosen by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and serve for a fixed period. It will include Indigenous Australians from every state and territory, the Torres Strait Islands and representatives from the regions and remote communities.

I’M SAYING YES!

Want to add your face to our Voice feature? Email andrew.gee.mp@aph. gov.au

Yes!

Just as the 1967 referendum enabled Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to be counted in the census, the Voice will also be a unifying step forward. This referendum is another pivotal moment in our country’s history.

Cadia not linked to lead in district water tanks

The study, conducted by the University of South Australia, examined 88 sludge samples collected by Cadia during the district water sampling program against samples from Cadia’s ore body, and other soil and rock samples from the surrounding area.

The report was independently interpreted by Emeritus Professor Brian Gulson from Sydney’s Macquarie University and found that 74 of the 88 samples (84%) had no correlation with Cadia ore. Of the remaining 14 samples (16% of the total), both the Cadia orebody and district soil samples exhibit similar characteristics, and they recorded the lowest concentration of lead amongst all the sludge samples.

Cadia General Manager, Mick Dewar, said the isotope analysis is part of a suite of studies commissioned in response to concerns raised by the community, and is the second independent air and water quality

investigation to be undertaken over the last 15 months in the Cadia District.

“Cadia continues to work diligently and methodically alongside the community and the NSW EPA to address concerns around air and water quality in the district,” Mr Dewar said.

“The health and safety of people is not a negotiable for Cadia. We are committed to mining in a responsible and sustainable manner, ensuring the protection of the environment and wellbeing of local communities.

“The latest vent emission monitoring results, received this week and provided to the EPA, show that we are operating in compliance with clean air regulations.”

Emeritus Professor Brian Gulson said like human fingerprints, lead has individual markers that set them apart called isotopic signatures.

“Samples of soil, rock, sludge and water containing lead were tested for their isotopic signatures to find out from where the lead originated. If all of the lead with this fingerprint came from Cadia, we would expect to see a higher concentration in the samples closer to the mine, tapering o in a clear pattern, which is not the case,” Emeritus Professor Gulson said.

The findings of the lead fingerprinting analysis are supported by the results from the community drinking water sampling program, the 12-month ANSTO particulate study, historical and current air quality monitoring data, and a revised Air Quality Dispersion Model that shows site boundary and receptor point compliance limits are being met.

In the coming weeks, Cadia will receive the last independent report, a human health risk assessment, which will provide a comprehensive assessment of the overall air quality in the district, and importantly the community’s health and wellbeing.

A copy of the lead fingerprinting analysis report and a fact sheet summarising the key findings is available on the Cadia website.

Key ndings from the analysis include:

◗ There was no evidence linking Cadia to the lead sampled in district rainwater tanks sampled by Cadia.

◗ The University of South Australia examined 88 sludge samples collected during the community water sampling program against samples from Cadia’s ore body, and other soil and rock samples from within the Cadia Valley.

◗ The lead found in 74 of the 88 samples (84%), has no correlation with the signature from Cadia.

◗ Of the remaining 14 samples (16% of the total), both the Cadia orebody and district soil samples exhibit similar characteristics, and they recorded the lowest concentration of lead amongst all the sludge samples.

Coming to Orange this September, the acclaimed Royal Czech Ballet will perform the classic masterpiece, Sleeping Beauty.

Sleeping Beauty follows the story of Princess Aurora. When the bad fairy Carabosse is not invited by the King to the Princess’ christening, she casts a spell on the Princess that will mean she will die if pricked by a needle from the age of 16. The King tries to protect his daughter by banning all needles in the Kingdom, however Princess Aurora accidently pricks her finger on her sixteenth birthday. After 100 years,, a handsome prince stumbles upon the Sleeping Beauty, Princess Aurora, where she is awoken from her sleep and witchcraft is defeated.

The Royal Czech Ballet’s performances of Swan Lake in 2022 were acclaimed by theatre goers and critics alike and featured international soloists Cristina Terentiev and Nikolay Nazarkevich. See Sleeping Beauty at the Orange Civic Theatre on Thursday, September 21. Tickets at Ticketek or call 6393 8111

Views, views, views! In every direction, from every room.

“It’s a really attractive house,” selling agent Tom Sheehan of Williams Machin Real Estate Orange said of this renovated and extended four-bedroom brick veneer home. “It’s built in a really attractive fashion that provides space, but the design is very focused on having a good view from every room and so there’s big glass windows. In the extension, they’re double glazed, and they look out over the garden, or over the rural countryside.”

Best of all, it’s set on 5.4 hectares, but less than 15 kilometres from Orange. The perfect setting for country living with convenience.

The property boasts a double garage with an attached double carport, and a large American-style barn with two internal stables, concrete floor, power, water connected, plus water troughs in each paddock.

“There are also two paddock stables, so it’s quite well set up for horses,” added Tom. “There’s a good dam on the property that’s pretty much spring fed… in that area underground water is almost a certainty. It has quite a lot of yabbies in it. So for families who want to go catch a few yabbies, that’s a really interesting feature of the property.”

Along with the spring-fed dam, there are two rainwater tanks with a total capacity of 170,000 litres. “Anybody could develop a really attractive garden there; it’s got some mature trees and hedges but it could be developed into a really nice block,” Tom said.

Inside, you’ll enjoy plenty of entertainment spaces, too: three lounge areas, one with a wood-burning heater, another with a large gas fireplace. Plus reverse cycle air conditioning throughout. And the wellfinished all-electric kitchen is a cook’s delight with an induction cooktop. Yet you won’t have to worry too much about your electricity bills because there’s a 6.5KW micro-inverter solar system already in place.

Four bedrooms, three bathrooms, three lounge rooms… and unlimited views.

In short: “It’s just very nicely set up.”

2023 ORANGE LIONS CHANGEOVER DINNER

Orange Lions held their annual changeover dinner at Duntryleague Golf Club on Thursday, July 13, welcoming the incoming president Debbie Butwell.

Graeme Eggleston was awarded the President’s Award for his commitment to the ‘Give Me Change for Kids’ project. Peter Fuge was recognised for his outstanding commitment to the organisation and his caring for unwell Lions with the prestigious Ian M Stockdale Humanitarian Award.

WITH KEITH RAWSTHORNE.

Probus Clubs began in the UK in 1965 to meet the needs of members for companionship and mental stimulation of retired professional and business people: “pro” for professional and “bus” for business, which makes the title Probus.

Probus quickly spread around the world with the first club in Australia being formed in Hunters Hill, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Dumbarton in Scotland. Ladies Probus began the same year in Bateau Bay. There are now over 2000 clubs, and growing each year.

A combined meeting of all the Probus Clubs in Orange – Orange Ladies, Orange North Ladies and Orange Men’s clubs – enthusiastically decided to hold a luncheon to celebrate Probus during Probus Month of October. The plan is for a luncheon of the combined Clubs at Orange Services Club on Wednesday, October 11. Neighbouring clubs will be invited to join in. It will be a great day enjoying the Probus principles of FUN, FRIENDSHIP and FELLOWSHIP.

To more immediate matters: President Chuck is making progress and expects to be at the August meeting. The EFTPOS machine is up and running so now fees, fares, etc can be done the easy way.

The tour to the Royal Flying Doctor Base at Dubbo was most informative and enjoyable with a tour of the Old Gaol included. The RFDS has amazing facilities and abilities for treating patients in remote areas. Plans are underway for a trip to the restored Zig Zag Railway at Lithgow. Guest speaker this month was the inspiring Dr Steve Peterson who is a quadriplegic, who received horrendous injuries when struck by a car when cycling to work in March 2018. He then spent 63 days in ICU at Royal North Shore, then to Ryde for specialised spinal and brain rehabilitation. After almost a year he returned to Dudley Hospital in Orange.

His work includes virtual GP, drug and alcohol rehab, lecturing and tutes at University. On the public front he is a non-executive Director of Live Better, and has been an Orange City Councillor. Dr Peterson has a very progressive attitude to Remote Health delivery, and is contributing in this area.

Future Speakers include W/O Tom Squires on army life, and Vanessa Gaynor from Uniting Senior’s Gymnasium will get us all fit and strong. It’s all GO at Probus, so make sure you don’t miss the FUN, FELLOWSHIP and FRIENDSHIP. Join us for our next meeting at the Services Club on Wednesday, August 2, at 10am.

LIFEandTIMES with ANGUS

FRIENDSHIP.

Sunday, July 30, will be International Friendship Day. I had no idea that there was such a day. It is a day the United Nations endorsed in 2011 and their website says that it was created with the idea that ‘friendship between peoples, countries, cultures and individuals can inspire peace e orts and build bridges between communities.’ This is a noble cause, and we would all do well to seek to foster friendships that transcend culture for the good of humanity. But what about much closer to home? Do you have a friend? I am not talking about workplace associates, or people you get along with from the local sporting club, or the people you speak to at the school gate. I am talking about a real friend. Recently the ABC published an article that showed that one of the loneliest groups of people in society are males between the ages of 3045. I was shocked by this statistic. As someone who fits within that group it made me stop and wonder about who my friends are. To reflect on who are the people that I can call up or message at any time, for any reason, and will hear me out no matter what and who will be an encouragement and support through the good times as well as the tough? I could only count a small group. I may have many mates. But few friends. That shocked me. How about yourself?

There have been some great initiatives that are seeking to raise

GIBB

the awareness of the importance of friendships in the mental health space such as the ‘R U Ok?’ movement. But more can always be done. The Bible speaks a lot about friendship and the importance of it. For example, in Proverbs 17:17 it says: ‘A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.’ That is a wonderful picture of friendship. A never giving up kind of friendship. A friendship that grows deeper through the tough times of life. I have been fortunate to have friends who bear testimony to this truth. But this is just a reflection of the truest and greatest friend I have in Jesus. There’s a great old song called What a Friend We Have in Jesus that speaks about the ultimate friendship that we can enjoy with God through Jesus and that no matter what, he will listen to you.

The first verse goes like this: ‘What a Friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer! O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear, All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.’

So maybe this Sunday, being International Friendship Day, you might like to reach out to your friends and just thank them for who they are and all that they have done for you. Thank them for being there when others weren’t. And maybe it’s an opportunity to think about the friendship you may find in other places if you only ask.

THUMBS UP to Kyle and his colleague for the help with cleaning the gutters on my house. I tried several businesses but he was the only one who got back to me and he did the most amazing job.

A BIG THUMBS DOWN to Orange City Council for changing the weekend pool closing time to 4pm from 7pm). Late afternoon on weekends used to be an excellent time for older, slower lap swimmers who are more comfortable not sharing a lane with faster “splashers”.

THUMBS UP to the wonderful, talented, caring sta of Uniting Seniors Gym. In the words of Winston Churchill, “Never has so much been owed to so few.” Thank you for your support and friendship.

THUMBS DOWN to myself for inadvertently leaving my pink swimming goggles at the Orange Aquatic Centre. Thumbs down to the person who stole them instead of putting them into the lost property box. But a huge thumbs up to all of the lifeguards at the pool! Always cheerful and respectful!

A BIG THUMBS UP to Henry, for his amazing photography at our 60th Wedding Anniversary, Ann and Barry.

THUMBS UP to the taxi drivers for their kindness in helping me out with my walker and groceries.

A GRATEFUL THUMBS UP to the two people who o ered help to my brother on Monday, July 17. The gentleman who drove him from Burrendong Way to my place, a big thank you! Your kindness was very much appreciated.

THUMBS UP and thank you to the administration sta at the Wellness House. They are always very helpful, friendly and do their best to assist where possible.

THUMBS UP to Max at the Aquatic Centre. He is always professional and o ers a warm greeting to arriving swimmers and a cheery goodbye as they leave.

A BIG THUMBS UP and thanks to those who came to my aid after being knocked over by a four-wheeldrive entering North Orange shopping centre car park on Saturday, July 15. Your concern over my welfare was much appreciated. Thankfully, I only sustained bruising to my right hip and right elbow when hitting the ground.

THUMBS UP to Liz at O ceworks — a real asset to the company. Liz went above and beyond to help out this technology-challenged senior citizen. Her help was very much appreciated. Thank you.

THUMBS DOWN to the state of the car park at the Alpine Stores. How about giving it a clean and the paths a good sanitising. It’s looking pretty trashy.

TIME WARP with ORANGE AND DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY Pins barred as balloons brandished

These children put a strict ban on pins as they brandished balloons at the Rural School’s infants’ annual fete in November 1958! The fete, with many stalls well stocked with a wide variety of goods for sale, raised £190. A highlight of the day was a display of handicrafts and paintings of the children’s work on display in the assembly hall.
