BnH Orange showing why locally made is best for 45 years

For more than 45 years, BnH has been making high-quality blinds, awnings, screen doors, shade sails, and more, right here in Orange.

Taking the reins of this long-running family business, new owner Estelle King is working to make sure BnH is satisfying customers in Orange for decades to come.

BnH was founded in 1978 by Estelle’s parents, Bruce and Hazel King, as a small backyard business making flyscreens and repairing blinds. Even as the business grew and expanded into new premises, increasing its manufacturing capability, it has always remained a family concern.

“I remember having Venetian blinds on the clothesline at home, that’s how Mum used to wash them. And I remember her doing repairs on the old sewing machine in the garage,” Estelle said, who, like her siblings, has had a lot of hands-on experience in all aspects of the business.

“I worked within the business full-time in the manufacturing side from 2001-2011,” Estelle said. “I spent ten years learning out the back, not in the office, so I’ve made awnings, urban tracks, Romans, I’ve done all that.”

Estelle left the family business in the hands of her sister Florence and brother Bill and moved to Dubbo, where she worked in an accounting firm while gaining a Bachelor of Accounting and Human Resources.

Moving back to Orange five years ago, she was asked to come back into the family business in an administration capacity.

But then earlier this year, Estelle took the big step of purchasing BnH from her brother Bill and already there is another family member keen to carry on the family legacy.

“My son is a big part of why I’ve taken it on,” Estelle said. “He’s now 27 and already does a lot of our installs and he wants to carry on the business eventually.

“It’s very important to me to continue my Dad’s legacy. He was well-known and he did quality work. He always did what he could for customers, the customers were always his focus and that’s very much my focus and very much important to me that reputation continues here at BnH.”

While BnH has long been known for highquality blinds, shade sails, screens and awnings, Estelle said, people are still surprised by the broad range of their products, many made right here in Orange.

“We actually make stuff right here,” Estelle said, pointing to the workshop behind their Leewood Drive showroom.

“And not all our customers know the range of things we do. We don’t just do blinds, but we do doors, security screens, retractable screens, Urban Track blinds, custom awnings and H Slat

– we’ve had people tell us they thought they had to go to Sydney for that.”

Being manufactured locally means that BnH products aren’t limited to standardised sizes and brands, but can be custom-made to exactly what the customer wants. They’ve even been able to accommodate out-of-square doors and windows, Estelle said.

“And if there are ever any issues, we are right here,” she said. “I’ve heard stories of people waiting weeks to get problems fixed but because we make them here, we can be there to help you the very next day.”

A growing side of the BnH business is the installation of security screens and roller shutters, Estelle said.

BnH is associated with the National Security Screen Door Association and has the master licence and individual licences to sell, manufacture and install security products.

“With all the break-ins happening in our area we are finding at the moment that a lot of our work is installing ScreenGuard security doors and screens, and roller shutters as well,” Estelle said.

“Repairs are another big area for us. We get a lot of people who bring other company’s blinds or other products here because there’s no one else around who can repair them but us.”
