Thank you to our Sponsors:

Orange City Life is grateful to the following sponsors for their ongoing support over many years. These sponsorships, among others things, have enabled us to bring our readers a lot more enjoyment to our publications than would otherwise be possible. In return, we ask you to please support them as often as you’re able.

I got a start the other day when I was thinking about something that happened in November and realised six months had nearly passed since! The year is certainly ying by, but here is another issue of Orange City Life for you to enjoy.

Congratulations to the lucky winner of our Penrith Panthers V Wests Tigers ticket giveaway, thanks to Bathurst Regional Council. We had quite the response from readers eager to snap up those four grandstand seats. For those NRL fans who missed out, there is still time to grab tickets to the match in Bathurst on April 29.

Last week I mentioned that details of our new weekly movie ticket giveaway competition would be coming this issue, but unfortunately, you’ll have to wait just one more week to nd out how you and a friend can win free seats at the Odeon 5.

The City of Orange RSL Sub-branch invites all to join them in commemorating Anzac Day on Tuesday, April 25. The Dawn and Morning Services will be held as usual in Robertson Park, with the main Anzac Day march assembling at Memorial Hall at 10am for a 10.30pm departure. Details can be found on pages 10–11.

Don’t forget that the Orange City Life oce will be closed on Anzac Day, so please get any submissions for our next issue to us as early as possible!

Enjoy!

Colour City hosts

premier Australian outing for outstanding pianist and contemporary composer

Hania Rani

Hania Rani is considered one of the most successful and intriguing pianists and contemporary composers in the world right now, having sold out shows in London, Berlin, Tel Aviv and across North America. This young rising star is about to land on our shores for her first Australian tour, performing in Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and Brisbane, but her first stop — Orange.

“It was definitely important to us to have Orange as part of the tour, and a huge preference to have it as the opening location,” said Merryl Naughton of Incy Wincy Promotions, the small business she runs with her partner Peter Ross, and who are behind bringing Hania Rani to Australia.

Merryl and Peter relocated to Orange from the Hunter Valley in March last year, drawn by the food, wine, cool climate and thriving

arts scene in the Colour City. Moving to an apple-growing region like Orange also made sense given their interest in making traditional cider, which they produce under the label ‘Incy Wincy Cyder’.

But music has long been a passion for both Merryl and Peter, who were running their own music festival at their Hunter Valley home until COVID brought it all to a halt.

“Pete loves music, he’s got a really great ear for music and he’ll take a few weeks and dissect a piece of music,” said Merryn. “I on the other hand am much more on the social side, I like music because it’s fun… We just decided one day; let’s have a music festival!”

The Wollombi “Paddock Sessions” kicked off in 2016, with about 60 people camping in the paddock next to Merryl and Peter’s home.

“After four years, we had 350 people and it was becoming an event that people were coming back to and looking forward to,” Merryl said.

4 ORANGE CITY LIFE | APRIL 20 — 26, 2023 Community LiFE

“But then, COVID happened and we weren’t doing that anymore and we accelerated our plan to move to Orange.”

Not that they knew it was the last at the time, but the final Paddock Sessions was certainly one to remember, with the line-up including James Morrison with a 14-piece band, backup singers - the works.

“We miss that,” said Merryl. “You miss that side of things, the musical festival, and doing something in the community.”

Which leads us to how the couple found themselves organising Hania Rani’s first Australian tour.

“Pretty much, it was either fly to Europe or convince her to come here,” said Pete, who had stumbled across Hania’s music on YouTube and quickly became a fan.

“Pete started following Hania through Gondwana Records and got in touch with her manager and said you should come into Australia, and the answer was no plans,” said Merryl. “And so we kind of said, let’s fix that!”

The tour planning and negotiations took almost two

years, but Peter and Merryl were determined to include Orange, and have built a good partnership with the Orange Civic Theatre that they hope will continue in the future.

“I’ve got a cue of international artists that we know and that we can connect with, and we’ll probably do something like one a year,” said Peter. “One international artist a year and bring them out, start in Orange and then do the east coast.

“The guys who manage Hania are already talking to us, saying, what about this artist? Can we do something next year? It’s definitely kicked o with a bang, that’s for sure!”

But is there a chance we’ll ever see the Paddock Sessions music festival reborn here in Orange?

“We just bought a property at Borenore and there’s a very large paddock next door that we’ve been eyeing o ,” said Peter.

“We get, I don’t know, half a dozen queries from people a month, saying when’s Paddock Sessions coming back because people miss it… it could happen!”

HANIA RANI - LIVE IN AUSTRALIA FOR THE FIRST TIME

Musical meteor, astonishing pianist and contemporary composer Hania Rani will make her Australian debut at the Orange Civic Theatre on Wednesday, April 27.

Rani grew up in Gdansk (Poland), initially inspired to study classical music, she was introduced to jazz and electronics at music school, widening her interests, “mixing Chopin and Schostakovitch with Dave Brubeck and Moderat” as she puts it. Other inspirations include composers such as Max Richter, Esbjorn Svensson, Miles Davis, Nils Frahm, Murcof, Portico Quartet, Radiohead, and even The Beatles.

“It’s what connects all these artists that inspire me, their special approach to music and sound. For me, they have big hearts and huge minds,” says Hania

Hania has performed across Europe, North America, Japan, Israel, Turkey and Russia, with sold-out shows in prestigious venues like NOSPR in Katowice, Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Funkhaus in Berlin and The Roundhouse in London. In 2022 Hania was invited to Paris to perform live shows for ARTE and Cercle that were viewed over 1.5 million times in just three months).

Her debut album “Esja”, a beguiling collection of solo piano pieces on Gondwana Records earnt four prestigious Fryderyk Awards and saw Hania receive the distinguished Sanki Award for “New Face of Polish Music”.

Her follow-up album, “Home”, adds vocals and subtle electronics. The album earned Rani another Fryderyk award for ‘Best Composer’ and a Transatlantyk Golden Ark Award for “Best Young Polish Composer”.

See Hania Rani, supported by Australian jazz legend Jonathan Zwartz, at the Orange Civic Theatre on Wednesday, April 27 2023. Tickets at Ticketek.

Time’s almost up on Robertson Park time capsule and Orange Lions are seeking out cardholders

It’s almost time! Half a century ago, in 1973, the Orange Lions Club gave the people of Orange the chance to send a message or trinket to their future selves or loved ones in a time capsule buried in Robertson Park.

On June 29, the capsule will be unearthed and envelopes delivered — if you’ve got the card to claim it.

The project was conceived as a way the Lion’s Club could raise funds for a ladies’ rest centre and bus shelter, with the public paying one dollar for an envelope to be placed in the time capsule.

Purchasers were given a card and told to place it in their wills, or a secure place that could be located in 2023. The card gives authority to the holder to receive

the envelope.

Items placed in the envelope included photographs, stamps, coins, letters, trinkets or anything else that would be of sentimental value to a next of kin.

The time capsule is located under a rock on the eastern side of Robertson Park, marked by a single brass plaque and Orange City Council and the Lion’s Club are working hard to unearth the capsule on Thursday, June 29 as initially planned.

“The council will have an area fenced o on the day, but the public will be invited to come and look,” local Lions Club member,

Shane Reddan said of the unearthing event.

Members of the Orange Lions Club are now urging cardholders to contact them by emailing olc.timecapsule@gmail.com stating the name on the card; claimant’s name, claimant’s email and phone number. Alternatively, the information can be returned to “Orange Lions Club Time Capsule” PO Box 499 Orange 2800. On receipt of your information, the club will send you details on how to collect the envelope, which can be done from July 1.

Orange Lions Club member Debbie Butwell says it’s important that they get the message out in time, especially as many

families may have moved away, and cards may have been forgotten.

“We want to jog people’s memories,” she said.

Heather Moxon and Jenny Ostini, whose parents left something in the time capsule for them to one day have, are excited to see what will be dug up.

“They never said what was in it, but Mum used to write poems so we’re thinking maybe something like that – it’ll be interesting to see,” Heather said. For more information on the time capsule contact Shane Reddan on 0413 163 721

The Mulhollands – a m sp ng l e s ry

Gwyn Mulholland was born into a motor racing family, from an early age travelling in the back seat of the family car to club events all over the state. But it was in a bowling alley, not at a race track that Gwyn found his ultimate prize – his wife Helen, and together the happy couple have shared their passion for motorsport these last 35 years.

It was at the age of just 15 that Gwyn first took part in a rally, acting as navigator for his father. The father-son pair won that first outing and Gwyn has continued to compete ever since earning himself many wins in whatever event he can field a vehicle.

But it was a game of tenpin bowling in 1987 that led to Gwyn meeting his future wife, Helen who would share his lifelong passion. Early on in their relationship Gwyn took Helen to the Oberon-Black Springs rally where she got her first taste of motor racing.

While Helen was under the impression she was just there to spectate, Gwyn asked her to give him a hand.

“I had no idea about motor sports,” Helen said with a laugh.

Despite the freezing weather and her lack of knowledge at the time, Helen was hooked.

“The rest is history,” Helen said, and her love for motorsports grew from there.

“It was almost immediate. I love cars — we’ve got nine at the moment!” she said.

The pair married in October 1990 and have always complemented each other with their hobby, as Gwyn travels around competing in rallies and hillclimbs while Helen navigated, or o ciated.

The couple have participated in historic rallies and helped set up the Australian History Group. Helen has proudly served as Secretary and Committee member of the Bathurst Light Car Club and is now a Life

Member and devotes a lot of her spare time to the club. She has also served as secretary during their motor rallies for many years.

During the 80’s and 90’s the Mulhollands introduced their sons to the racing world as they raced all over the state and the ACT with their five go-karts.

Helen has been the Motorsport Australia, formerly known as CAMS (Confederation of Australian Motor Sport) Delegate for about 20 years for the Bathurst Light Car Club, and has only missed a handful of State Council meetings, due to o ciating at events.

She is a member of the Orange Gnoo Blas Classic Car Club and helps them organise their annual car show. She is also a member of the Gunnedah Motoring Enthusiasts Car Club, and assists the Lithgow Sporting Car Club.

And in 2000 Gwyn was named the Motorsport Australia O cial of the Year for NSW.

For the last 18 months Helen has spent time at Raleigh Raceway helping with their new Rallysprint track as Secretary, Steward and General O cial at rally sprints and a rally cross.

Helen has been accredited as Silver Secretary, Silver Steward, Bronze Circuit, Bronze Rally, Specialist Alcohol Testing O cer, Timekeeper, Course Presenter and Assessor.

After many years of commitment from Helen and Gywn, they were recognised with the 2022 Motorsport Australia Service Star — an award to honour those going above and beyond whether as competitors or those who work tirelessly behind the scenes.

As busy as the two are, Helen doesn’t see herself slowing down anytime soon.

“I’m always doing stu ,” Helen said. “I’m 75, and retired, and I believe that once you retire you have to have a good interest, because if you don’t, people just vegetate.”

“Dream big, because you just never know how far you can go.”

The Avid Gardener’s blooming success

When Peta Swift and Henrietta Hood took the plunge and launched their own local gardening business they had no idea what was just around the corner. But three years and a global pandemic later and The Avid Gardener is thriving, with seven employees and more work than they can handle.

“Three years ago in 2020, right when the pandemic hit, like just that week!” recalls Henrietta of the inauspicious beginnings of their business venture.

“I’d resigned just before the pandemic was announced,” says Peta. “We’d gone into it and then the pandemic hit and we were very nervous!”

“I had just gone through a big life change and had sold my house and sold my guest house, and so I was fully committed to the gardening business, which was nervewracking,” continued Henrietta.

Longtime friends and former workmates, Peta and Henrietta decided to go into business together as a way they could better juggle work and have more time for their children.

“We’d both become single mums and we wanted to have a business that was conducive to being mums… being able

to sort of juggle family life as well as bringing in an income,” says Henrietta who is a lifelong gardener and trained horticulturalist.

“Pete and I have known each other for a long time and I always knew that she absolutely loved gardening and Pete is very organised, which I love… I’m more creative and disorganised, so I really needed Pete.

“So I approached her and said, ‘Hey what do you think?’”

While naturally risk-averse, Peta agreed. And even with the unfortunate timing of launching a business as the world goes into lockdown, she hasn’t looked back.

“No, it was actually a perfect time to launch our business,” says Peta, who found that their services were quickly booked out months in advance.

“We didn’t think that people would have the money but actually they did and so work just came pouring in,” adds Henrietta, who was always confident the demand was there.

“And it still seems to be the case,” she continued. “We get 25 calls a week at times and people want to be on our waitlist, but now we’ve just had to say we can’t because we’ve got our families and just trying to juggle it all… we just have to put the brakes on for a little bit, but there’s just such a demand – It’s amazing!”

Peta and Henrietta have had to stop taking on new clients, even though they now employ seven sta .

“And we need more!” says Henrietta. The pair are now focusing on their existing clients, while also venturing out with an online store through The Avid Gardener website.

“It’s all really good quality gardening tools, seeds, and gardening advice… like fact sheets that are specific to our climate that we’ve created and then had a graphic designer make into a really nice poster… It’s things that we use, or would use, that we think people who love gardening would like,” explains Henrietta.

“We would definitely love to expand a bit more but we’ve both got children, so my eldest is in year 10 and so things are sort of ramping up, so being able to be there and support our children, that’s the biggest priority.

“But we will expand! My motto is dream big, because you just never know how far you can go… and it’s been unbelievably successful. Both of us absolutely love what we do. We’re surrounded by beautiful people and we work with nature all the time. It’s our passion and we get to do it every day.”

EUGOWRA WAR MEMORIAL RE-DEDICATION

Onthe 14th of November 2022 almost every home in Eugowra was destroyed or damaged when a massive wall of water hit this close-knit community.

Eugowra’s War Memorial, dedicated in 1931, is usually a place of peace, tranquility and quiet reflection. Not that day.

Almost totally submerged in water, the gardens and pathways were washed away, fencing and gates were damaged, it had lost paint, but through it all, like the men and women in uniform it honours, the memorial had stood strong.

In the days that followed the tragedy, plans were made to restore the memorial. Eugowra Progress Association, and Orange RSL Sub Branch (Chris Colvin and Brad Bliss were in Eugowra as soon as they heard help was needed) and many organisations and community groups contributed to this vitally important project for Eugowra. Thank you to all of you.

Last Saturday the memorial was re-dedicated with Rev Gary Neville consecrating the memorial in a beautiful service that included Waltzing Matilda.

In the lead up to ANZAC Day 2023 this was the communities of our region coming together with Eugowra to fulfill our duty of remembrance to those who’ve served and sacrificed for our country.

For the heroic town of Eugowra that has been through so much, it was also another significant milestone in its story of rebuilding and reconstruction.

Eugowra will never forget those who have lost their lives in the service of Australia or those who were tragically lost on that devastating day in 2022. Lest We Forget.

JOINT SELECT COMMITTEE MEETS

It was great to welcome the Joint Select Committee on the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice Referendum to our region this week. Many MPs and Senators from across the political divide gathered in Orange to hear from residents of the Central West about what the Voice means to them.

It was fantastic to have this opportunity in our area, and for our local leaders to share their stories and have their voices heard.

HERITAGE MACHINERY RALLY

Last weekend, from Friday to Sunday, the 18th National Heritage Machinery Association Rally was held in Mudgee.

Hosted by Cudgegong Valley Antique Machinery Club and AREC (Australian Rural Education Centre) it drew exhibitors and machines from all over Australia.

From beautifully restored tractors, RFS vehicles, farm machinery and cars, to typewriters, cameras and phones of yesteryear, the rally was a sight to behold. These were the machines that built Australia.

The Grand Parade, which was held every day of the rally, was definitely one of the many highlights! There was even a Yowie sighting in a 1943 RFS truck - although as is often the case with Yowies, I wasn’t quick enough with the camera for a photo!

The team from Hargraves RFS, fresh from fighting fires for weeks out at Hill End, worked their magic on the barbie! It was great to see them and catch up with many other mates!

Hosting a national rally is a massive undertaking and Brian Jones and the Cudgegong Valley Antique Machinery Club and AREC did a simply outstanding job.

Thank you to everyone who supported

the rally, including all who came along, the sponsors and of course the exhibitors (many of them from our region!).

It was terrific!

STAGE 4 OF THE SOUTHERN FEEDER ROAD IS UNDERWAY!

It’s fantastic that works are kicking off on Stage 4 of the Southern Feeder Road Project, from Anson Street to Shiralee Road!

As Orange continues to grow and thrive, it’s important that local infrastructure not only keeps pace, but is built to meet the needs our city will have in generations to come.

The Southern Feeder Road project will cut congestion along some of Orange’s busiest streets, make travelling through Orange safer, easier, and quicker, and improve the safety and efficiency of freight movement for our region’s agricultural businesses and mining operations.

The former Federal Government committed about $13 million to the entire Southern Feeder Road project, and it’s great that the current government are keen to continue supporting the project.

CANOWINDRA BALLOON GLOW

Glow This year’s

Canowindra

International Balloon Challenge

and Glow was a huge hit!

After a very tough end to 2022 with the storms and floods, Canowindra showed just how resilient and vibrant our country communities are. The crowds in town were huge.

There was world class entertainment, including incredibly talented local country artist Clancy Pye and Darlinghurst, heaps of stalls and of course the balloons! Our sincere gratitude to Andrew Pull and the hardworking team of volunteers and sponsors who brought us this iconic event. And of course the balloon teams! It was a great triumph for Canowindra!

Golden Plough: a modern competition that harks back to yesteryear

It’s a modern competition with its roots in our farming past: Australia’s most prestigious horse ploughing championship, The Golden Plough, comes to Wongarbon this weekend.

The two-day annual competition — Saturday, April 22 and Sunday, April 23 — will see draft horse teams compete for the coveted Golden Plough Trophy.

Horse-drawn ploughing involves skilfully guiding one or two draught horses, pulling a single furrow plough, to create a straight plot of eight runs (minimum) which are judged on linear accuracy, depth, sharpness of cut, total width and how the soil is turned.

Points are also heavily weighted towards the relationship between horse and competitor.

Blayney local and Golden Plough champion, Chris Chapman has been involved with draught horses for at least thirty years but became hooked on the competition side of things ever since attending his first Golden Plough in Darby Falls.

“I just went to watch, and I really liked the challenge of it. I thought there’s a great skill in this and I had to learn it,” Chris said.

The following year he returned as a competitor and came first in Novice, and

third in the Golden Plough.

“That was something that I was really chu ed about, and from there I just kept going, which led me to win it six years in a row, which was no mean feat because it had never been done,” Chris said profoundly.

“Someone as young as I was at the time, ploughing against a lot of older ploughmen and quite accomplished ploughmen – I was over the moon!”

Work commitments meant Chris couldn’t prioritise his horsemanship as much as he would have liked, but as he enters retirement he’s looking forward to giving it

his all again.

So head along to Wongarbon this weekend and see Chris battle it out alongside the best plough handlers in the country. There will also be obstacle courses, wagon rides, horse-driven cha cutter demonstrations and food stalls. Spectators are also encouraged to stick around for an evening of fireside stories and poetry over a delicious camp oven dinner with none other than legendary bush poet Murray Hartin.

Tractor Trek Trivia Night is no trivial cause

Get your thinking caps on and head to the Orange City Bowling Club on Saturday, April 29 for a trivia night and official launch of this year’s Central West Charity Tractor Trek.

The annual Tractor Trek — which raises money for Little Wings, a volunteer air service that transports sick kids to medical appointments in the city — will this year head to Cowra in September, with the trivia night officially kicking off fundraising efforts for 2023.

“We gave a hundred thousand dollars last year to little wings. Of course, that’s the thing. it’s about supporting little wings,” Central West Charity Tractor Trek treasurer, Sue Moffatt said

“And Little Wings is about the Central West, it’s not just focused on one town and it’s why we’re called the Central West Charity Tractor Trek, people come from different areas and try to raise funds and sponsorship from different towns.

“The actual Trek is Cowra this year, but was Blayney last year and it’s been to Dubbo, Bathurst, Orange, all sorts of places.”

The Trivia Night at the Orange City Bowling Club will be a low-key affair, Sue said, the focus being on raising money for the work of Little Wings.

“It’s Saturday the 29th of April, 6.30pm to 7pm, bring your own nibbles and tickets are only $10 — you don’t have to pre-buy them, just turn up at the door,” Sue said.

Sue said there will be a maximum of eight people allowed per table, with prizes for the winners along with other raffles and games.

“We’ll have Little Wings representatives and they do a little talk and a bit of a spiel about who they’ve helped and the mayor of Cowra has been invited to attend,” she said.

The Central West Charity Tractor Trek is also currently running a raffle for a trailer load of wood and another trailer full of goodies will be raffled later in the year.

As well as raising funds for their chosen Charity, Sue said they are also keen to raise numbers on the Trek itself.

“The more tractors the better obviously,” he said. “It’s nice to have a few people at the launch, but it’s about having the tractors — it’s pointless otherwise. We had something like 15 last year and had a few breakdowns but in the past, we’ve had as many as 25. So if we can get another few tractors and drivers with them that’ll be excellent!”

For more information on the 2023 Trivia Night and Tractor Trek Launch or the Trek itself, contact Sue Moffatt on 0414961390 or email bwctractortrek@outlook.com

THE GOOD ENOUGH Parent POISED

I just have a quick question about these school holidays. That question is what the actual f*#%?

Are you aware that due to Easter and ANZAC and “sta development day” that our kids are only at school for seven days this month? In an act of desperation, I did something without thinking. I was just trying to get some work done, entertain the kids and ensure that Miss Eight’s “What I did in the holidays” back to school snitching story wasn’t just “ate toasties and watched Netflix”.

So I enrolled her in Ninja gym. I know. I KNOW. What was I thinking? Well, I was thinking that I had a 4 pm deadline and these classes are actually cheaper than a babysitter.

However, article written, I pick up Miss Eight and she immediately uses her newfound skills against me.

“Watch me spin kick this!” she yells, kicking over the three tall piles of folded washing that have been on the couch for five days an appropriately small amount of time. Fabulous.

However, that wasn’t even the biggest problem. That was when she had to get the washing out of the washing machine and chose to do it “ninja style” twirling each piece of wet washing across the laundry. This, combined with the washing powder spilled on the floor the previous day, meant only one thing; that, when I walked unaware into the laundry, I went skidding across the floor falling hard against the counter, taking out my right kneecap.

Lucky enough to live in Orange where we have a great hospital, wonderful physios and grocery delivery, my dislocated kneecap and I settled in for a few days of rest to recover.

“We will take care of you Mum” announces Miss Eight. This moment makes me so proud,

particularly because I spent the first week of these 17000-week holidays teaching her how to make us tea. “Also,” she continues while patting my arm, “I found my recorder!”

The growing little spot of happiness/ hope for the future/dignity was then cruelly ripped from me in the form of a “there have been substitutions in your grocery order” message.

Now, let me explain that I’m not a complainer. Substituting grape-scented shampoo for the punnet of strawberries I ordered? Sure, at least my hair will smell nice. Almond milk for an avocado? They both start with A and I’m sure you did your best. Regular ultrathin pads for super goodnights with wings? WTF is wrong with you? NOT OKAY. And this is what I’m stuck with, because I can’t walk or drive for another three days.

Cue best kids ever. “Mum, I can walk to the shop and get you the pads you need” announces Miss 14.

“I’ll even take Miss Eight with me and get her out of your hair for an hour,” she says, clearly preemptively buttering me up for something. I remind her to not let Miss Eight roundhouse kick anyone and lie back and enjoy the beautiful peace.

They return triumphant but announce they couldn’t find the brand I usually use, and the only one they could find was “Poise”.

I’m not saying the absolute lowest point of my life was yesterday, stuck on the couch with a middle-aged injury, listening to Miss Eight’s hauntingly beautiful rendition of Old MacDonald’s Farm on recorder whilst wearing an adult diaper… But if it was, it also means that today will be better, right?

School goes back next Wednesday, Miss Eight has been using her ninja skills to tidy her room and as soon as I’m back on my feet that recorder is gone for good.

NEXT STAGE OF SOUTHERN FEEDER ROAD SET TO BEGIN

Councillors gathered with government representatives last week to mark the start of work on stage four of the Southern Feeder Road.

The $14.7 million section will take the project west from Anson Street to Shiralee Road, providing easier connections with residential areas of south and west Orange, as well as the health and industrial precincts to the south of the city.

Orange Mayor Jason Hamling

welcomed the start of work.

“Orange City Council has been working steadily at building these Southern Feeder Road connections over the past 10 years as funding became available. It’s crucial to deliver the transport infrastructure that a growing city like Orange needs,” Cr Hamling said.

“Multi-million-dollar projects like this one can only happen in partnership with all tiers of government and Council is pleased

to be working with the NSW and Australian governments to deliver this expansion of our road network.” The 1.7km project will be constructed by the MAAS group. A new roundabout will be constructed at the intersection of Park and Shiralee roads, along with upgrades to a 500-metre section of Shiralee Road from Park Road to the railway level crossing, and the extension of Park Road through to the top of Anson Street.

The $14.7 million stage of the Southern Feeder Road is funded by:

• Orange City Council - $4.6 million

• NSW Government’s Resources for Regions program - $4.5 million

• Australian Government’s Heavy Vehicle Safety & Productivity Program and the Local Roads & Community Infrastructure Program - $5.5 million

The project is expected to be finished in about a year.

INAUGURAL SPIREK ART PRIZE A HUGE SUCCESS

The winners of Orange Art Society’s new annual figurative art competition have been announced.

Launching the art competition exhibition on Saturday, Grahame Martin was named winner of the inaugural competition receiving $1000 for his portrait, ‘Bill’.

Second prize went to Marilyn Hickey for her artwork, ‘Linocut’, and Anna Terziman received a highly commended for her artwork, ‘Mirror, Mirror’.

“From all accounts, it was a huge success – everyone had a really good time, and we were very impressed with the artworks,” Vice President of the Orange Art Society and committee member overseeing the Spirek competition, Jodie Geach said.

The competition attracted over 50 entries with an impressive variety of mediums, styles and interpretations of the human form on display.

“For a first event, we were really happy with that,” Jodie said. The competition is named for former Orange resident, artist and sculptor, Hank Spirek, who donated cash and artworks to the Orange Art Society prior to his departure from the Colour City.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Hank has been a working artist in five different countries over his long career. Well-known for his paintings of bird life, Hank’s favourite subject matter has always been the human form, and he hopes the annual prize might see more local artists pursue figurative work. Hank returned to Orange on the weekend to see the presentation of the inaugural winners.

Competition entries will remain on display at the Orange Art Society gallery (entry from the Woolworths carpark) until May 11, and many of them are for sale too.

“There’s really nice ones there, so it’s definitely worth a look,” Jodie said. “There might be something that catches your eye!”

Sessions, April 23

The last run of Canowindra’s Sunday Sessions at The Bowlo are ending on a high note with a free community concert featuring ‘CMAA Golden Guitar Winner’ and ‘CMC Female Artist of the Year’, Christie Lamb!

Christie has been described as ‘the full package’. She is a powerhouse vocalist and a vibrant multi-instrumental, award-winning singer songwriter. She will be performing her award-winning hits in her three-piece band on stage at the Canowindra Community Bowls and Recreation Club this Sunday, April 23. Her hit single ‘You Brought The Party’ has

Touring relentlessly with her own dates across Australia and NZ, Christie is no stranger to being on the road. She has toured nationally with Lee Kernaghan for four years, opening the show as well as playing piano and mandolin as part of his band, alongside The Wolfe Brothers.

Christie toured with Australian Rock royalty Jon English as lead vocalist and musician on the ‘The Rock Revolution’ tour, and experience that has transformed her

life musically and personally

“The tour with Jon was the first big tour I was involved in and it was the best fun,” Christie said.

“I learned a lot and had to really learn to be organised with time as I was still at university also. Jon was the ultimate showman and very down to earth.

“The tour had a massive e ect on my personal life as I become Mrs Christie English after marrying Jon’s son Jonathan and we have a beautiful little girl Charlotte Rose English.”

Christie’s performance at The Deni Ute Muster caught the attention of Keith Urban who invited her back on stage to perform

a duet with him in front of thousands of Country Music fans.

What was it like performing on stage with Keith Urban?! “The biggest honour ever! He is so giving and talented. Amazing!” Christie enthused

Don’t miss this free performance at the Canowindra Community Bowls and Recreation Club this Sunday, April 23.

And being a family-friendly event there will also be a kid’s arts and craft table set up and The Country Education Foundation (CEF) of Canowindra are hosting a fundraising barbecue. There’ll be ra es and a courtesy bus running locally as your ‘Plan B’.

HOME COOKING with RUBEN LOPEZ MESA

Croquetas: the ultimate way to use leftovers

In my family, there was a golden rule of “don’t waste food”. Learning how to cook just enough food for all the members of your family is a skill, but if, for whatever reason, you tend to cook a bit more, please do not stress. You can always use and reuse leftovers!

Those who know me well will know that I absolutely love the challenge of cooking with leftovers. In fact, I used to be the chef in charge of many restaurant sta lunches because of that. I’m pretty good at cleaning fridges avoiding waste and the loss of a lot of money for the business owners.

It is funny that nowadays a lot of people compare this with the super well-known ‘Mystery Box Challenge’ concept that many cooking TV shows do. But trust me, you don’t need to be a MasterChef Australia contestant in order to do that. Whether you eat meat, fish or veggies there will come a time that you’ll have to use those bits and pieces that end up not being eaten the night before — the sad piece of vegetable hidden in the veggie draw, the leftover cheese or smallgoods from your weekend catch-up with friends, etc…

That is why I wanted to let you know that there are many, many tricks and recipes you can have up your sleeve to prepare a new meal with all those products. And in my opinion, the queen of all of them is today’s recipe: Spanish croquetas. But hold on a sec Rubén, are ‘croquetas’ the same recipe we call in English as croquettes? Sort of… Let’s start by saying yes, conceptually it is. As you may know, they are a snack, entree or tapa, crunchy on the outside but creamy and filled with delicious stu inside. However, the big di erence between the English or French version and the Spanish one is how you make the mixture inside. This is something that I’ve come to realise not many people here know. In Spain, our croquetas are not made with potatoes!

But, you’ll be wondering, if the Spanish croquetas are not made with potatoes, what are they made with? Well, get a piece of paper and a pen, because these steps in today’s recipe are going to solve a lot of your cooking needs.

When I went to TAFE, I learned that one of the ‘mother sauces’ in cooking is called ‘BECHAMEL’. Here in Australia a lot of people call it white sauce, and they

usually just think about it when they think of lasagne or gratinated pasta. But it can be used to make a lot of things like the famous mornay sauce (which is bechamel + cheese), the croque madame sandwich so trendy in cafes — and of course, the delicious, super creamy Spanish croquetas you’ll find in many tapas bars across the Iberian Peninsula. Yes, you read right; Spanish croquetas are made with bechamel, not potatoes.

In French cooking, the bechamel recipe begins by using equal parts of butter and flour, called ‘ROUX’ (in Spain we use half olive oil and half butter). There are four types of roux, which depend on how much colour you let the flour get while cooking, but today we are going to concentrate just on the basic one, the white one.

To start, get ready by measuring the butter and flour, chop an onion finely, put the milk in a saucepan with some flavouring on low heat to infuse it and chop the protein or flavours you are about to use. You’ll see that today I had some leftover jamon serrano and manchego cheese.

But Rubén, can I use fish instead of meat? Or veggies instead of animal protein?

Di erent types of flour, even gluten-free)? Or alternative milk options if I have a dairy intolerance? The answer to all of that is, yes! Play with the recipe, but remember the basics of what it is: A delicious and creamy torpedo-shaped snack to reuse anything in the kitchen. Some ideas I’ve made over the years include: an eel and horseradish croqueta, leek and Mahon cheese croquetas, forest mushrooms and fresh thyme croquetas, etc… You see, the options are endless!

Chef tip: Take your time and cook the bechamel well, it must not taste like raw flour. Always make your croqueta mix the day before you fry them. After frying them, use kitchen paper to absorb the excess fat before serving them to your family. Finally, keep an eye on the seasoning, always wait to add it at the end once all the flavours are combined. You’ll see below, I’m not using any because the jamon serrano I’m using is already salty.

INGREDIENTS:

Basic croquetas mix:

- 60 g extra virgin olive oil

- 60 g butter

- 1 onion chopped really small

- 120 g plain flour

- 1-litre milk (infused with fresh thyme)

FLAVOURS:

- 250 g jamon serrano, chopped finely

- 100 g manchego cheese, chopped small

- fresh thyme to infuse the milk with

CRUMBING:

- Extra plain flour

- 2 eggs, whisk well.

- Crumbs

- Oil to fry

METHOD:

- In a frying pan add olive oil and butter over medium heat.

- Add the chopped onion to it. Stir well.

- In a saucepan, add the milk and the thyme and infuse them, keeping it warm.

- Once the onion is cooked well and soft (super important), add the flour and stir well.

- Cook it for a minute or so and then, using a ladle, start adding little by little the milk to the mix.

- You’ll see how the mixture starts absorbing the milk, this is the moment to then add more and repeat until you finish the whole process.

- Keep stirring and bring the bechamel to a simmer. You can use a whisk if you see any lumps (or even a hand blender).

- After 10 to 15 minutes taste it (it shouldn’t be floury). If it still tastes like raw flour, keep cooking it.

- If it doesn’t, turn it really low and add the chopped cheese and jamon serrano. Stir it well, turn it o and taste it again. At this point, it has to be delicious!

- Store it in a container with a bit of cling wrap in the fridge until it cools down completely.

- The following day, remove the plastic wrap and with the help of 2 spoons start making little pieces of bechamel (make sure they are the same size).

- To crumb them: dust them in flour first, then in whisked egg mix and finally the crumbs.

- Heat oil in a frypan, or deep-fryer if you have one, and cook the croquetas until golden brown.

- Remove the excess fat by drying them on a piece of kitchen paper.

- Serve them hot to your family.

DON’T THROW OUT YOUR WASTE, ENTER WASTE2ART INSTEAD!

Entries are now open for the 2023 NetWaste Waste2Art competition, which challenges artists of all ages and abilities to repurpose ‘waste’ items into fantastic works of art.

This year’s theme, Textiles and Fast Fashion, is aimed at getting people thinking about the effects of the disposable fashion trend and the impacts it has on our environment.

Coordinating our local Waste2Art competition is Orange Library’s Monica Engel who’s excited to get people involved.

“If you’re interested, start thinking about what you’re going to make. And have a look in your cupboards, it’s surprising what you can find that you can use to make something beautiful,” Monica said.

Monica believes the competition can alter the way people perceive waste, and particularly our relationship to fashion, given the theme this year.

“It’s about understanding not only the problems, but also the solutions to waste,” she said.

The Waste2Art competition is open to anyone and categories include: 2-Dimensional (poster/painting/collage/drawing), 3-Dimensional (sculpture/ installation), and functional (furniture/craftworks and wearable objects).

“Established artists are welcome to enter, but we do get a lot of amateur artists entering, and in the past some of those artists have gone on to make a name for themselves,” Monica said.

“What we’re looking for is something conceptual – the ideas coming through of the waste problem, or the solution.”

Entry is free and must be submitted to the library by Wednesday, May 31.

The exhibition will run from June 19 - June 30 at the Orange library, with judging taking place in the first week and winners announced at the official exhibition opening on Friday, June 23.

All of the winning artworks from each local competition will be transported to a Regional Exhibition.

Orange City Library is also hosting a number of Sewing Maker Space Workshops, to give you inspiration and new skills to tackle a Waste2Art project of your own. They will be held at the library on May 3, 10, 17 and 24 from 4-6pm. Bookings are essential and can be made at eventbrite.com or Orange City Library 6393 8132.

Set on 5.4 hectares, less than 15 kilometres from Orange, this renovated and extended brick veneer, four-bedroom home, three bathrooms, three lounge areas (one currently used as pool room), a well-finished all-electric kitchen with an induction cooktop and a 6.5kW micro-inverter solar system to cut electricity costs.

“It’s a really attractive house,” selling agent Tom Sheehan of Williams Machin Real Estate Orange said.

“And the extension is built in a really attractive fashion that provides space, but the design is very focused on having a

good view from every room and so there’s big glass windows, in the extension, they’re double glazed, and they look out over the garden, or the views of the rural countryside. It’s just very nicely set up.”

There is reverse cycle air conditioning throughout the property as well as a wood-burning heater in one lounge area, plus a large gas fireplace in the main lounge for a cosy feel on a winter’s night.

The property also boasts a double garage with an attached double carport, and a large American-style barn with two internal stables, concrete floor, power, water connected, plus water troughs in each paddock.

“And there are two paddock stables also, so it’s quite well set up for horses,” added Tom.

“There’s a good dam on the property that’s pretty much spring fed, in that area underground water is almost a certainty.

“And the dam, for those who are interested, has quite a lot of yabbies in it. So for families who want to go catch a few yabbies, that’s a really interesting feature of the property.”

Along with the spring-fed dam, there are two rainwater tanks with a total capacity of 170,000 litres.

“There’s lots of water and anybody could develop a really attractive garden there; it’s got some mature trees and hedges but it could be developed into a really nice block,” Tom said.

“It is just a comfortable house to live in and well set up to entertain people — that’s one of its great features also. There’s a nice entrance, a big reception area… It’s a nice house and quite handy to town.”

The Biggest Fear of Retirees

The biggest fear of retirees is running out of money. So, it probably won’t surprise you to hear that the biggest regret of Australians over the age of 65 is not having saved more money for retirement!

With a bit of planning, we can overcome both. The key is to take action as soon as possible.

Most people fear running out of money because they don’t fully understand their finances. They don’t know what their options are, they don’t understand their super (let alone that they may be paying way too much in fees) and they don’t know what path they are on. And all of the above is understandable... they don’t teach us these things at school. What actions can you take?

I believe the number one action people can take is to get their super working

harder… why not make your super SUPER?!

If you are an employee, 10.5% of your pay is being sent to your super fund. Your super fund is then investing this money for you and charging you fees along the way. You can also add extra contributions and potentially get a tax deduction for doing so.

How much your employer puts in, how much you put in, the fees you pay and the returns the investments get, are going to play a BIG part in how much income you are going to be able to provide yourself with when you retire. So, it pays to pay attention.

You have enormous control over your retirement savings, you just may not have realised it yet.

There are plenty of other things you can be doing, but before you start looking at other ways to invest, get your super working as hard as possible. The fact that you are already an investor, via your superannuation, is one of those light bulb moments for many people.

The earlier you can implement strategies

to maximise your super, the better the results will be.

In saying that, getting to 50 (or thereabouts) tends to be a real line in the sand for many people. All of a sudden, the finish line for working starts to be within sight. Suddenly, the realisation of how much money it might take to be able to a ord to comfortably retire starts to get real.

Some people panic and start doing crazy things, many just put their head in the sand and hope for the best (hope is a not a plan!) and some get serious and start to put in place sensible strategies that will yield results.

Get the basics right and you’ll be a long way towards success. Steer clear of anything that sounds too good to be true, don’t get ripped o paying way more in fees than you need to, use the taxe ective strategies that are available to us in Australia and get as many things on autopilot.

The faster you do these things, the sooner

you’ll be overcoming the fears and regrets that cripple many people’s financial futures.

If you want to learn more about what you can be doing in your 50s to put yourself in the strongest position for a financially secure retirement, then I’m holding a FREE ‘Finances in Your 50s’ seminar on Monday, May 1 at 6.30 pm at the Orange Ex-Services Club. Get the facts, be empowered, and make the most of every dollar you earn between now and when you want to stop working.

Simply scan the QR code and book yourself a seat or give me a call on 0411 484 464.

If you’ve read this far then I hope to see you there!

If you’d like to fi nd out more about how INDEPENDENT fi nancial advice could help you manage cash fl ow, pay off the mortgage faster, get the most out of super and invest wisely, then get in touch on 0411 484 464 or head to wealthtrain.com.au.

This advice may not be suitable to you because it contains general advice which does not take into consideration any of your personal circumstances. All strategies and information provided are general advice only.

Ensure soil is rich in organic matter with good drainage. Plant bulbs pointy end up about 3cm deep and approximately 10-15 apart. Apply a thin layer of organic sugar cane or lucerne. Water in with a liquid fertiliser and apply once a month thereafter to encourage strong growth. Garlic takes approximately 9 months to full maturity.

Make the most of the space and intersperse with winter greens such as chard, kale or mustard. You’ll be harvesting from the veggie patch in no time!

Bountiful books, home-made cakes, and plentiful DVDs, all at Anglican Book Fair

It’s the one big event of the year for serious readers throughout Blayney Shire and the wider district — the annual Anglican Church Book Fair.

Running for the next two Fridays and Saturdays, (April 21–22 and April 28–29), this year it features about 10,000 original titles ranging from Agatha Christie to Peter Fitzsimons, Dickens to Dostoevsky, and everything in between.

“We’re starting each day at 9am in the Church Hall on Adelaide Street and, this year, we have a lot by Australian authors,” Organiser Elizabeth Russ said.

“We’ve also got a very big run of books on military matters, and a good general range of authors, fiction and nonfiction,” she added.

With most people now watching their favourite shows and films on streaming services, there’s also been a rush on that old family favourite, the boxed TV or movie series gift set. “This year, we also have plenty of DVDs, hundreds of them, so if you like the old-style home cinema experience, dropdown,” she said.

“There will also be a trading table with homemade cakes, home-grown plants, jams and biscuits, and plenty more,” she added.

Volunteers are also being sought for this major annual fundraiser that supports the many good deeds of the local Anglican Parish that is based out of Christ Church, Blayney. “Yes, please, anyone who can volunteer for even a couple of hours, is most welcome,” Elizabeth said. For more information, contact Elizabeth Russ on 6368 2122, mob. 0408 682 122.

Newcastle Permanent grant up for grabs for not-for-profits

Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation’s latest funding round opened on Wednesday, March 29, with a pool of over half a million dollars available for new or existing projects which support health, young people and social wellbeing in the Central West. Local not-for-profit organisations and community groups have until Monday, May 1 to apply.

Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation Acting Executive Officer, Anita Lucas, encouraged both new and existing partners to apply, particularly in the face of challenging economic times.

“Regional charities are facing the unique combination of increased

community demand for services and ongoing barriers to the delivery of their services,” said Ms Lucas.

“It’s been a tough couple of years for not-for-profits, having come through Covid and all the challenges it presented, to now when the rising cost of living is placing pressure on local communities and driving an even higher need for assistance in the Central West region.

“As the Charitable Foundation celebrates our 20th anniversary, we have renewed drive and motivation to support these organisations that play such a pivotal role in ensuring our regional NSW communities thrive.”

Since being founded in 2003 as a gift to the community, Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation has provided over $25 million in funding, touching hundreds of thousands of lives.

Since 2020 Newcastle Permanent Grants have aided the following local organisations with important projects; LeaderLife Limited, KIDS Foundation, SHINE for Kids Cooperative Ltd, Musicians making a Difference MMAD, Life Education NSW, National Stroke Foundation, Housing Plus, Teach Learn Grow Incorporated, Marathon Health Limited and the Police Citizens Youth Club NSW Ltd (PCYC).

Graduation Day was always a special time for newly graduated nurses at Orange Base Hospital at a time when they were trained at the hospital.

Besides the graduations, several nurses were awarded prizes for outstanding results in exams in various aspects of nursing.

A ceremony was held at the nurses’ home, attended by matron Kerr, deputy matron Field, chairman of the Medical Board Dr Cli ord Colvin hospital secretary Mr Camlin and the Mayoress, Mrs Cassey, plus relations of the nurses.

CHILDS PLAY

With

So I work with kids and legit, it’s my happy place. I love hanging with them, chatting about life and watching them try and achieve new things. The thing I love most about them is their willingness to believe the impossible: fairies in the garden or kisses and cuddles fixing boo boos. This is what makes kids so beautiful, they don’t overly complicate stu , they just believe these things wholeheartedly and let the joy that comes with it wash over them. This is why Jesus tells us we need to be like children otherwise we just won’t get what he is on about. “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 18:3) We as adults overly complicate things. We don’t let ourselves breathe and just let God work in us. Kids accept the idea of Jesus straight up, because the idea that someone loves you so much that they give up everything so you can be friends with them forever sounds so good, they just want to be part of that. Will you let yourself be young again for just a moment?

UP to Sandra (at Coles Orange) for your generosity on the morning of Thursday, April 13 when you paid for my supplies. I am overwhelmed by your kindness, and if there is any way I can be of assistance to you now or in the future please get in touch. This has made my life feel worthwhile, and I am proud to have served in the armed forces, and that there are still people like you who still care!

THUMBS UP to Graeme at Jax Tyres, Orange who advised me that the tyres on my SUV did not need replacing despite another Orange tyre company giving me advice that they all needed replacing at a cost of over $1000. Graeme gave the tyres the once over on a rainy day on the Jax forecourt and said they were perfectly okay except for some shoulder wear due to Orange’s roundabouts and would last for some time in the future. For this expert advice, despite my o er of payment, he checked each of my tyres, filled them up and refused any payment. Good advice and honestly given.

BIG THUMBS DOWN to supermarkets that feel that it’s ok to only open one checkout for people to go through with a bag full of groceries. When will you understand that there are a lot of people, especially the elderly who prefer to be served by a human, and not by a self-serve machine?

THUMBS UP While I was shopping at North Orange Woolworths today a meat item that I wanted was sold out. Cathy, an employee, was busy restocking the meat cabinets so I asked if or when the product might be back in store. She politely told me that she was unsure. I continued my shopping and quite some time later Cathy sought me out as she had found what I was looking for and had taken a trip around the store to find me. Thank you, Cathy, for going above and beyond!

A HUGE THUMBS UP to Mark at Stone Memorials for the stellar job he has done on my parents’ grave. Excellent job at a very competitive price! Thank you!

THUMBS UP to Lime and Stone in Molong. A beautiful renovation, and both the shop and café are amazing! Beautiful service every time. Well done.

THUMBS UP to Margaret and David at the Orange Railway Station. Both are hardworking, helpful, and professional. More sta needed there though.

THUMBS UP to Andrew Gee for pushing for a better crossing at Dixon Point. Build a dam with the road over the top of the wall. That would be great.

THUMBS UP to Jess from Guzman Y Gomez for her kindness and for being so accommodating. I hope you know you’re doing an amazing job and make people’s day.

THUMBS DOWN to the people who look after the Orange Showground. Show time again and still no ring, grandstand or horse stables – all pulled down. Take a look at Bathurst and Dubbo. Come on council, fix it up.
