A day in the life of
a start-up bag company Kamiliun (pronounced ‘chameleon’) Bags is a small, unique, trendy urban travel bag company from Bristol, UK. They work from a petite studio space on the second floor of the Hamilton House building, surrounded by a mix of artists, musicians and fashion designers. As a new start-up they’re striving to find room for their ‘ultimate ethical commuter bags with a reclaimed twist’ within the overcrowded bag market. Here’s a typical day in the life of the innovative bag designers: 06:45 - Alarm clock goes off and snooze button is promptly pressed. 07:00 – Alarm clock goes off a second time, gets up and cycles to the gym for a 15 minute tabata workout. 08:00 – Breakfast eaten standing up whilst watching tele (catching up on what’s happening in the world). 09:20 – Cycles to the studio whizzing down a couple of lengthy hills. 09:39 – Unlocks the studio door and opens sliding studio windows located directly behind the two large emerald green industrial sewing machines. 09:40 – Presses play on iPod dock and out comes The Chilli Peppers ‘Give It Away’. 09:41 – @kamiliun tweets “hello” to the world. 09:45 – Replies to emails, checks website orders from kamiliun.com packs and sends off any orders placed (got a bespoke laptop bag order to start making today.) 10:30 – Prepares daily blog kamiliun.blogspot.co.uk for the following day, making sure all tags are added so the blog can be found. Places blog in the pending folder ready to be sent in the morning. Checks stats for the website, blog and all social media. 11.20 – Updates Facebook page facebook.com/kamiliun 11:30 – Has a quick mid morning pick-me-up coffee break at one of the local coffee shops along Stokes Croft (avoiding all business discussion obviously). 12:00 – Stops by the ‘Bristol Bike Project’ to grab some bike inner tubes they leave piled up outside their workshop. 12:15 – Thoroughly cleans all sourced bicycle inner tubes and sorts them into categories (binding, anti sway
straps or strap ends). 13:00 – On the massive whiteboard (located to the left of the industrial sewing machines), starts designing the pattern for the bespoke order. 14:30 – (Nearly forgets) lunch break! Whilst out and about grabbing lunch, checks in with coffee sack supplier to see what unique sacks they have in stock. 15:28 – @kamiliun ‘tweets’. 15:30 – Starts cutting the material for the bespoke order including: bike inner tubes, coffee sack, webbing (straps & stuff), foam, and a lovely check pink material chosen for the lining. 17:30 – Power up faithful sewing machines and starts sewing the bespoke laptop bag. (to be continued the following day!) 18:30 – Downs a quick cup of tea. 20:45 – Blimey it’s quarter to nine already! Just time to check email before heading home. 21:00 – Windows shut, machines off, lights out, doors locked. 21:15 – Cycles back up the (lengthy) hills easily glided down in the morning. 21:45 – Scoffs a quick meal. 22:30 – Shattered crawls into bed (ready to do it all again the following day). Each and every Kamiliun bag has its own dedicated serial number and is catalogued with the start date, time finished and who prepared and made the bag. If you are an individual and would like your bag to reflect your individuality then they might just have a bag design you’ve been looking for. No-one wants to be walking around with the same bag as someone else, and with Kamiliun you don’t have to!

RichaRd O’BRien QuaRtet : Sometimes even the most disciplined of bass players just has to let it all out, & busy Mango Factory/Murrumbidgee twangster Richard O’Brien is no exception as this lively combo demonstrates. Expect great jazz-rock grooving with fretwork firestorms aplenty. the duval PROject : Picking up from his much-missed Backyard project, trumpeter Gary Alesbrook brews awesomely funky original jazz with this rocking 5-piece supergroup that also includes Ruth Hammond (sax), Andy Nowak (keys) and the Saffron Monkey rhythm powerhouse of Richie Blake (bass) and Danny Cox (drums). celestine : If her assured singing and compelling stage presence give vocalist Celestine genuine star quality, it’s the music she makes that you’ll remember, a carefully crafted blend of soul, gospel, jazz and blues that fits her classic jazz-club voice to a very modern R’n’B style. www.celestinemusic.com hOwlin’ lORd : When not providing burning harmonica and rock vibes to the likes of Emily Breeze and the John E. Vistic Experience the great Howly is out making hard-bitten country/rock infused with a strangely appropriate Englishness and driven by punchy guitar and, of course, heart-catching harmonica as well as his own impassioned vocals. www.myspace.com/howlinlord MaRie listeR & jaMes ladd : Casette Baby vocalist Marie Lister somehow catches all the soul of great R’n’B in the most stripped down acoustic setting, thus blending perfectly with the whiff of bluesy N’Awlins that wreathes around James Ladd’s guitar and voice. www.reverbnation.com/cassettebaby lady nade & FRiends : There’s always plenty of talent on display when the sumptuous-voiced Lady Nade gets her friends round to play. Ranging from jazz and blues to folk and soul they’ll probably cover all the bases. lee McRORy : Gifted with a properly gravelly voice it’s inevitable that Lee McRorry writes Waitsish underbelly Americana narratives to sing for you. Accompanied by his neat and vigorous guitar playing, his bluesful music wanders that endless road from Nashville to N’Awlins. www.myspace.com/leemccrory catlOw, sykes & hawes : You’ll know the faces but maybe not the tunes - it’s Sheelanagig’s demonic flute, fiddle & guitar players turning their backs on the Balkans & heading for old-time country in search of moonshine, bluegrass & ‘a spittoon full of three-part harmonies.” Mmm Tasty! eMily wRight & the ROyals : Her top trio of musicians makes a classy setting for the excellent Emily Wright’s smoothly louche vocal evocation of swing music of the 30s and 40s. www.myspace.com/emilywrightandtheroyals kangaROO MOOn : For nearly 15 years Aussie outfit Kangaroo Moon have been fusing Celtic music with funky psychedelic rock and pumping didgeridoo. Over time the personnel may have changed but the core quartet (and the high energy musical philosophy) remains the same trance-folk that rocks. www.kangaroomoon.com cantalOOP : Cantaloop’s mission is to provide 800% of C-funk with a satisfaction guarantee! Cantaloop are fronted by the C-funk messenger Dannie Dee with his trussed C-funk doctors. This band from the middlands will surely bring the funk to town. www.cantaloop.net Matthew & Me : This Totnes-based quintet have been making a shimmering emergence in this year’s festival hinterlands with rather beautiful and ethereal pop songs whose restrained arrangements and swooning harmonies recall Prefab Sprout, Belle and Sebastian and other nicely artful types. www.matthewandme.co.uk canteen jazz sessiOn : An open jazz jam session for seasoned players to join the house trio and others in exploring classic jazz & latin tunes. saM gReen & eRic ness : Ridiculously good lap-steel guitar player, singer/songwriter Sam Green pairs up with highly entertaining Norwegian ‘Glam Jazz’singer Eric Ness for what promises to be acoustic fireworks. www.wix.com/samgreenlive/ online www.myspace.com/ericsbandofficial BaRtOune : Spinning off from the irrepressible Zen Hussies this threesome build a uniquely jaunty swing sound around Charlotte Ostafew’s baritone sax, Seb Gutiez’ guitar and Tom Allen’s bass. Blending originality with a fine sense of musical heritage the results are great entertainment. www.myspace.com/triobartoune

Matt siBley QuaRtet : Rocking retro 80s-style fusion jazz outfit led by Matt Sibley’s volatile tenor sax sparking off Andy Christie’s inexhaustible guitar, Andy Novak’s ear-catching keyboard and supersmart rhythms from the drum kit of Eddie John. wORldly savages : These savages don’t just sound Balkan - they come from Belgrade (albeit via Canada, Mexico & Scotland) so they really are Balkan. Untraditionalists in the Gogol Bordello style, enjoy their wicked mischief in the name of dancing good-times. www.worldlysavages.com

BRackish : This brand new and totally intriguing ‘experimental rock jazz’project has all the makings, thanks to the twin guitar frontline of Neil Smith (Liftmen, Smith & Willox) and Luke Cawthra (Phantom Limb).
