Marie De Monti Artist of the Month Marie de Monti is a french cartoonist with a sketchy fine line and a fondness for tiny details. She likes expressive characters with her favorite subjects being wildlife and history; she illustrates childrens magazines, books oversea, fictions or documentaries, mostly of these themes but also about monsters, aliens, objects come to life, commercials, comics, or whatever else satisfies her inner soul and pays the bills. To see more of Marie’s work by swing by The Canteen 1st - 31st August.

DeCyphers Hip Hop Session Guest MCs and musicians join the rhythm section of the ultrafunky DeCyphers collective for a monthly exploration of all things hip (and, indeed, hop).

Joe Strouzer Joe is back from N'Awlins and the Mississippi mud, busking blues on the streets of London where his rough-edged hard-luck stories have been breaking hearts aplenty.

Balanca Jazz singer and percussionist Cathy Jones has long been associated with Brazilian music, bringing a poised vocal coolness to classics as well as her own poignant songs. Homegrown Collective You'll have come across some of these guys in various guises, including Pip & The Polar Bears and Samantha Lindo. A deliciously homespun acoustic mishmash.

5

Antimatador Oh they're clever, this lot from Plymouth, slipping hip hop turntables and lyrics into nu-soul anthems powered by slick-as-you-like brass and remorseless drumming.

Flamenco Loco

A trip to Andalusia courtesy of Cuffy's dazzling guitar, Noemi's dramatic dancing and Jimi's impassioned vocals, conjuring up the ancient theatre of Flamenco.

Bristol jazz luminaries who make contemporary music played with real flair.

Scribes Are you ready for hip-operatics? Plymouth-based Scribes deliver beat-box grooves and sub-bass manoeuvres. It's nicely dark and suitably groovy - just how you like ‘em. Free live music! Please see the website for details Ali George & Ruby Brown In Ruby Brown's crystalline vocals seasoned troubadour Ali George found the perfect complement to his own voice and forcefully intricate guitar.

Canteen Jazz Session An open session led by saxophone hero Craig Crofton supporting seasoned players to join the house trio and others in exploring classic Jazz & Latin tunes. Bush Gothic Singing viola player Jenny M. Thomas has pulled together (and pulled apart) a rich set of folk songs from the dark past of her native Australia. Bama Mine Reaching back to the 20s, Bristol-based Bama Mine mix early jazz with filthy swing, all rendered with authentically roughshod charm by vocalist Rachel Lawrence and pals. The Eskies Hailing from Dublin, there's a cosmopolitan jaunt to The Eskies that's a long way from clichéd Irish folk-rock, mixing New Orleans with Balkan and a dose of cheeky wit. Free live music!
