Emily Trott Artist of the Month Emiy Trott’s beautiful, natural inspired wood cuts feature in the programme this month, originally made for a short story written by Emily called ‘Into the Woods’. ‘‘It’s about exploring what it feels like as a child to get lost in the woods and let your imagination run away with you. But it is also about facing your fears as an adult and realising that the monster you were running away from is you.’’ The book will be released in October 2016. Emily’s work also spans photography, installation-based work, video, projection, drawing, and sound. You can see more of Emily’s work in The Canteen from 1st-31st Oct. emilytrott.weebly.com

A Silent Film, Live Music & Delicious Food... Why have just a meal that tantalizes your tongue and smells that delight your nostrils? How about an evening that gets in to all your senses? That my friends, is Hot Pot Cinema. Hot Pot Cinema will be a series of events throughout the year with different exciting art forms mixed in with taste sensations! Our launch event is a particularly exciting one- we will be collaborating with electronic musician Epistrophe Smith, who will be creating and performing a live electronic score to the fantastic silent movie Caibria, a beautiful work of art from the beginning of the 20th century.

Electronics build a foundation for the live instruments Epistrophe Smith uses to perform. Alongside electronic loops he integrates double & electric bass, keyboards, analogue synths, guitars and vocals. Performing solo with all the live instruments and electronics is no easy task, but the result is a captivating unique experience. In the panic surrounding an eruption of volcano Mt Etna, Cabiria and her nurse are abducted from their home and taken to Carthage where the pair are sold into slavery. Presumed killed in the volcanic eruption her parents mourn her loss and lose hope of ever seeing her again. Little do they know Cabiria is alive, but fate is not on her side. Intended to be an offering to the god Moloch and Kronos, the child eating statue, Cabiria’s days are numbered. hamiltonhouse.org/hot-pot-cinema

Lara Hawthorne’s work is inspired by West African textile patterns and bright, bold colours from the earth and animal kingdom. Harriet Lee-Merrion’s work is influenced by Asian culture and involves minimalist but emotive line drawing. Owen Gent draws inspiration from European folklore and explores the enigmatic place where beauty and melancholy meet. Under the Vine You drink a rust liquid thick with years of forest floor, rotted leaves, rainstorms. You come under the influence of bird song a lullaby your mother sang about a tree in the garden. You fall asleep with leaves turning green to orange, wrinkling from flesh to rust liquid once more. Samantha Weaver
