Welcome

We’re glad to say It’s the usual story here at Hamilton House with a ton of new events happening throughout April. It’s so packed in fact it was a struggle to fit them into the listings page this month! There is definitely an air of excitement about the events space of late due to the wonderful overhall it’s had, (as well as the partnership between coexist & coresist - and yes the similar name was intentional!)

A big event coming up is TIM ‘MAC’ MACARTNEY: A Line in the Sand. We’re privilaged to have such a knowledgeable speaker here in the building and reckon it’s going to be a really popular event so you’ll most probably find yourself fighting over places.

There are also two film screenings set up by Coresist ‘Chasing Ice’ & ‘Vanishing of the Bees’ “An essential documentary…If you like eating, see this film.” - Channel 4

- enjoy

Welcome to the Hamilton House programme. Within these walls we support workspaces for over 200 creative practitioners, artists, designers, social enterprises and small businesses. We also provide community space for people to create, interact, learn, move and play. This space is constantly evolving, a grass roots project growing to suit the needs of the community it was set up to support. It inspires me every day I’m here and hope it inspires you too...

The Coexist Community Kitchen A Veritable Feast - Tankards Of Thanks

nly a couple of weeks ago we were swept back to a time of feudal O landlords and peasant revolutions and found ourselves feasting in the middle of an old ramshackle tavern! We turned our beloved Coexist Community Kitchen, and the next door events space into an amazing rustic old barn, even going so far as a borrowing an old hand held cart, rusty milk churns and covering the floor with sawdust (which proved slightly less exciting the next morning during clean up!).

he night started off with a Buttered Beer, a delicious T drink concocted by The Star & Dove and derived from a sweetend beer recipe taken from a ye olde cook book called ‘The Accomplisht Cook, 1660’. Whilst people were relishing their welcome drink, the musicians Fiona Barrow and Edward Jay propped up our newly built, shabby chic bar in the corner, playing mesmirizing folk music from their fiddle and accordion. We tucked into four delicious courses of food laced with surprise tasters along the way. The meal kicked off with ‘textured’ beetroot, chicory, walnuts & ewe’s curd salad, then a ‘fryed’ Cornish mullet in a claret sauce with anchovies & ginger. The feast continued with braised ox cheek, smoked bone marrow & celeriac puree, culminating with peanut & chocolate parfait and coffee - yum! The vegetarians among us were not disappointed and their taste buds were regaled with many a sensation.

he event sold out, raising over T £1500 for the outreach work the Coexist Community Kitchen do with The Bristol

Drugs Project (BDP) and the proceeds from the event went to fund the courses the Kitchen run with a fabulous group of BDP’s clients. t was all made possible by the massive support of Ihelping City of Bristol College and the many wonderful, hands, including the amazing chefs; Josh Eggleton from The Pony & Trap, Chris Wicks of Bell’s Diner and the team from The Star and Dove.

APR MUSIC

@ THE CANTEEN

Tue The Slow Revolt: Very interesting visitor, this one, and a solo offshoot of experimental electronica outfit The Feral Text with the band’s vocalist/guitarist buildingbroken 1 collages and twinkling mixmash soundscapes from all kinds of soundscraps. Wed 2 Thur 3 Fri 4 Sat 5

The Play: If you know about the Zen Hussies, Bartoune, Freight, or Dakhla then you’ll need no persuading to check out this four-strong team of familiar faces.

Shambolique: Jaunty foursome of Gypsyfunk troubadours with amiable wit in their words and sizzle in their fingertips, not least the live wire Miss Zing and her vivid violin. Kirris Riviere + Blind Bat: Kirris is soaked in the blues of B.B.King, Buddy Guy and other greats of the Chicago style. He’s got a rocking band, too!

Ewan Hoozami: one-man electro-producer whose dab hand with the MPC perfectly matches his smart way with words. He calls it Robot Soul but there’s no doubting his heart’s in it.

Sun Bucucrasu + B-Sides: In the parlance of good old N’Awlins it means ‘plenty filthy’ and that applies nicely, whether it’s Kesty Morrison’s sleazy vocals, Eric Arthur’s barrel-house 6 piano or the whole backstreet boogie sound. Mon Twelve months Of Summer: Monthly showcase of the best acts from the acoustic 7 scene pulled together by the sparkling Miss Rosina Buck (who is one such herself). Tue Louise Latham: Some singer-songwriters catch an epic sound in simple music. the soulful 8 anthems of beautifully-voiced Louise Latham’s debut album ‘Reclaimed’ is a text-book example. Wed Lori Campbell: The music of sometime ‘part time waitress and songstress’ Lori Campbell’s music is packed full of ideas and wit yet slides effortlessly into the ear in a very pleasing way. 9 Thur Sam Green & The Midnight Heist: This ridiculously good lap-steel guitar player rolls out his own contemporary folk songs of freewheeling wisdom interspersed with classic 10 blues tunes and a rocking band. Fri 11

The 45s + Diss Miss:

Breezy as anything rock and soul covers band with the fresh honesty of a Nuggets-era beat combo and the considerable advantage of Mr Bobby Anderson on guitar, vocals and all round charisma.

Sat Wormfood Ft. Rags Rudi + Wobby + Ali Baba: Here’s a proper East End knees-up fuelled by ska, hip-hop and a proper sense of fun. Check out the root in’ tootin’ 12 trumpet on their dubbed up version of the Tetris theme! Sun 13

Dubl Handl + B-Sides: Straight outta Brooklyn, apparently, but this fine acoustic duo really belong on an Appalachian back porch a-picking on the ol’ banjo and scrubbing the washboard that gave them their name. Listen carefully enough, however, and you’ll hear an urban edge in that snappy percussion.

Mon Canteen Jazz Session: An open jazz jam session for seasoned players to join the 14 house trio and others in exploring classic jazz & latin tunes. Tue Matt Woosey: Like the blues? Proper blues, mind, bashed out on a guitar with moanin’ and 15 howlin’ and all that razmataz? Matt Woosey’s your man, then, or maybe your mannish boy. Wed Albert Jones: he writes a good song and he picks a fair guitar too. Another bright talent 16 with a knapsack full of stories from the ever-fertile Cornish acoustic scene .

FREE ENTRY - BUT PLEASE GIVE GENEROUSLY TO THE MUSIC BUCKET! LIVE MUSIC MON-THURS 9:30 -11:30PM | FRI & SAT BANDS & DJS FROM 9:30-1:00AM | SUN LIVE MUSIC 4:00-6:00PM

Thur Niyi & Co: Rolling African rhythms, lazy jazz guitar and bass make a soulful setting for Niyi’s 17 socially aware lyrics, declaimed in a manner somewhere between Fela Kuti and Gil Scott Heron. Fri Ushti Baba + Alex Scott: They took their name from a Macedonian wedding dance tune, 18 they have violin and accordion in the acoustic line-up but with a beatbox in the sound,

Sat Smiley & The Underclass + Throwback Radio (Passion): Echoing the rebellious call to arms of The Clash and Dylan, infused with the bass-heavy vibrations of 19 Jamaican sound system culture, Smiley sings the revolution blues with a burning fire.

Sun Kit Hawes + B-Sides: Phenomenal guitarist with folk, jazz and contemporary music at his fingertips and a fine sense of what’s properly musical. Kit’s solo acoustic shows are a must 20 for lovers of fine fretwork. Mon Leonie Evans Blues Session: Lovely-voiced vocalist from Rae and Good Biscuits 21 hosts her own blues session with familiar faces in tow. Tue Dromedary: This mysterious coming together of Richard ‘Velvet Chestnut’ Hughes, lost troubadour from a deserted circus, and Hungarian percussionist Adam Pettick conjures up the 22 drifting smoke of carousing campfires. Wed Bartoune: this lot build a uniquely jaunty swing sound, blending originality with a fine 23 sense of musical heritage. the results are great entertainment. Thur Flats & Sharps: Absolutely dazzling bluegrass foursome from Penzance who rapidly rose from street corner busking to the Albert Hall - for the 2012 Schools Prom (which gives you a 24 clue as to their ages). How did they get so good? Pasties?

Fri Gypsy Fever: they’re very stylish Cabaret Gypsies, this lot, with a cool electroswing sound and Andrews sisters vocals when they want to. Then again, sometimes it’s just pure 25 Madness, or maybe a Serbian love ballad. It’s all very good. Sat Dirty Gentlemen: Swamp-tinged R’n’B from the bayous of Louisiana (via North London) given the full 9-piece boogaloo treatment and fronted by enthusiastic singer-guitarist George 26 Cooper. Sun 27

Truffle Shack + B-Sides:

Here’s the kind of musicianship you won’t see every day, brewed up in a Cotswold shack from Pete Rosser’s accordion and Misha Law’s violin and vocals. Irish jigs, tango tunes, folksy ballads and Balkan mayhem all get the pin drop sharp treatment with as much swing as they can handle.

Mon Canteen Jazz Session: An open jazz jam session for seasoned players to join the 28 house trio and others in exploring classic jazz & latin tunes.

Tue 29

Whiskey Moonface: It’s a talented band that can slip from sleazy cabaret schmaltz

to nifty folksy jiggery and still muster a sweet ballad but this lot do all of the above and more. The jewel in their crown, however, is the astonishing voice and exuberant personality of singer-accordionist Louisa Jones, a Brechtian Unthank from somewhere mysterious.

Wed Nasrudin: The original Nasrudin was a spellbinding storyteller and this super quintet of well-known Bath folkies tell their own captivating tales in beautiful arrangements of tunes 30 from the Middle East and Central Europe. Design by www.danchernett.com
