one-way drive from Miami Beach to New York City is an exhausting one. Not only do you have to sit in a car for some 1,280 miles over 19 hours, but you can also expect to spend more than $179 on an estimated 51 gallons of gasoline to get there. While driving is a better option than flying, it still results in a release of greenhouse gas emissions — about 0.5 tons of carbon dioxide to be specific. This is equivalent to burning 500 pounds. of burned coal.

The good news is that cars have come a long way in terms of fuel efficiency and have significantly lessened their impact on the environment. Unfortunately, other types of fossil-fuel technology need a little more help. Gas-powered leaf blowers, for example, have been found to emit the same level of emissions in one hour as the entire drive to the big apple. In January, the Miami Beach City Commission voted unanimously to phase out gasoline-powered leaf blowers as part of the city’s commitment
