affair with a sit-down dinner for several hundred or an intimate, private experience involving just the couple and an officiant, a wedding is an inspiring and joyous occasion. No matter what the style or type of celebration, whether you’re from Massachusetts or an heir to the British throne, making that declaration of love and commitment to another person almost always imparts feelings of joy, hope and excitement in you and those around you. As the international media has been reporting, England and the world are watching how PrinceWilliam and Kate Middleton plan their wedding in less than a year’s time. While you may not be under the same level of scrutiny, your nearest and dearest are certainly awaiting your upcoming nuptials with as much anticipation and excitement. To help you along, this issue of BRIDE&GROOM™ Magazine features the top trends in invitation styles for 2011 on page 60, as well as tips on how to get your ceremony music just right on page 40. Our article on post-wedding photo shoots on page 26 offers ideas for getting those must-have shots of the two of you without having to sacrifice time away from your guests and reception. And the couples featured in our Nearby Nuptials section demonstrate, once again, how personal you can be with your wedding plans. We’re also giving the magazine’s Web site, and that of The OriginalWedding Expo™, a brand new look so be sure to check them out.At the magazine’s site you’ll find access to this and past issues, while at the Expo’s pages you’ll find a list of upcoming bridal shows and be able to purchase your tickets online. Both offer comprehensive lists of wedding professionals. We hope you like the changes and find the sites helpful with your planning. Best of luck and Happy NewYear!

Tara Strand and Daniel Balunis Jr. Cape Cod, Massachusetts July 2010 How they met Dan and Tara have a mutual friend to thank for their introduction, which took place in Seaside, N.J. Dan was living in New Jersey at the time while Tara was in Massachusetts. The distance was not a deterrent to their relationship. “We traveled back and forth, which was a three-hour drive, for more than two years,” recall the couple, who said the quality time they spent together on the weekends made the long journey worth it. “We prided ourselves on seeing each other every weekend during that time.” Eventually, Dan, a Yankees fan, moved to Massachusetts to be closer toTara, who is, of course, a diehard Red Sox fan.

Wedding planning After getting engaged during a Caribbean cruise in August 2009, Tara and Dan spent almost one year planning their nuptial event. Because they had been to many weddings and Tara had read a plethora of bridal magazines, they had a good idea of what they did and didn’t want for their big day. Since all of their guests would have to travel for this wedding, the couple chose to tie the knot during the summer on Cape Cod so that guests would have the opportunity to plan a mini-vacation during their visit. “I had vacationed there every summer since I was a child and had taken Dan there when we were dating,” saysTara, who is also a teacher and would have the summer off. “It seemed like the perfect destination.” The couple worked together on all of the 18 Winter

major decisions, such as ceremony, reception, music, photography, cake and flowers. For the smaller details,Tara coordinated those with help from her parents and matrons of honor.Yet when crunch time hit, Dan happily assisted with the last-minute details, such as putting together centerpieces.

The details Hues of black and periwinkle were selected as the color palette. “Black is simple, classy and elegant, and periwinkle, which corresponded with our ocean theme, is my favorite color,” Tara says. Hydrangeas were used to

decorate the pews in the St. Pius X Church and the elegant staircase at The Sea View, as well as the place card, cake and sweetheart tables. Tara and Dan love to travel and have been to many exciting places together, which was reflected in the table names at their reception. On each table was a vase filled with sand, shells and sea grass, and also featured a picture representing the particular location for which the table was named. Favors were unique to each table’s name: for example, the Maryland table had chocolate crab lollipops and the Mexico table had bottles of hot sauce. In addition to the travel theme there was also a sand dollar theme. Save-the-date notices were magnets, which portrayed the sand dollar and beach theme along with the wedding information. Invitations were hand-made byTara and donned a silver sand dollar charm. Rehearsal dinner invitations were printed on sand dollar-themed stationery and the wedding cake boasted a few white chocolate sand dollars. Place cards included guests’ names and table locations on tags that were attached to sand dollars, which were placed standing up in a tray of sand that was made by Tara’s father. And lastly, each napkin at the reception had a sand dollar placed on it.Tara’s father had also skillfully handmade a lobster trap, which served as the cardholder.

with each other, as well as our family and friends.” Their most notable memories include a crowded dance floor and exceptional weather. “We were able to take pictures at a harbor and at the beach before the reception. Afterward, we took special sunset pictures on the beach.”

What guests commented on the most The unique table names and favors were a big hit. “People really enjoyed seeing all of the places we had been and taking home a unique favor from that location. It also served as a conversation starter at the table, and led to great conversations as we visited everyone.”

Advice Favorite part of the day “We don’t think we could pick just one favorite part,” sayTara and Dan. “It was amazing to see all of our planning come together so perfectly. We really enjoyed spending time

Shreevani Suvarna and David Fox May 2010 Boston, Massachusetts

Planning their wedding For Vani and David, who met in the neighborhood where they each lived in Providence, R.I., planning was relatively straightforward and only took five months. Setting their date, however, was no small task as they found it was a complex challenge with many variables. “First, we were happy to pick a date that is auspicious for the Hindu calendar and corresponded to a holiday that is good for new beginnings,” say Vani and David. “We also negotiated family commitments and availability as well as venue and vendor availability. Since we were planning the wedding on fairly short notice, there were a number of constraints.” Once the logistics were in place, the bride and groom did all the planning themselves. “We had an image of a celebration in our heads, and we were working toward making that vision a reality,” they recall. Event planner, Kerry Lynch, then with

Radius Restaurant, played an important role. “She provided invaluable help conceptualizing the entire event. She had great ideas about the celebration space, decorations, menu, schedule and how to deliver on our desire to have a celebration that we would enjoy as much as our guests. Kerry’s calm demeanor and attention to details made our wedding an event to remember.”

The details While Vani and David did not have a particular theme or motif for their wedding, they did bring a personal touch to the wedding favors and place cards. Vani found a supplier of “loaded” dice and had their names printed on the winning faces. “We enjoyed watching people opening the favors and rolling the dice to find that ‘Vani & David’ always came up.” In keeping with this slight gambling theme, oversized playing cards were used as table markers and guest names and table numbers were printed on regular-sized blank playing cards.

Favorite part of the day “We loved everything,” exclaim Vani and David. “We planned the day as a continuous celebration that would bring people together with plenty of opportunity for talking and interacting with each other and, for the most part, we succeeded.” Because their ceremony and reception 22 Winter

2011

were in one venue, there was a seamless transition from pre-wedding mingling to dancing and cake. “From the moment our guests first arrived, there was an opportunity for drinks, food and conversation. We felt this was the best way our event could be a success, and it was.”

What guests commented on the most More than one guest said this was the best meal they have had at a wedding and asked for a list of the wines that were served. “Radius provided a menu worthy of its executive chef’s credentials. The menu had a broad selection of meat and vegetarian options and included desserts that added nouveau-Asian flavors. The sommelier also selected three wines that paired perfectly with the meal.”

Advice First and foremost, this couple wanted to enjoy the celebration with their guests, so they planned accordingly by setting up a few guiding principles. “We recognized that it is impossible to please everyone, so we focused on our own priorities,”Vani and David recall. “We decided that we wouldn’t spend money on things that didn’t matter to us, but also, that we wouldn’t skimp on the things that did. Our advice to other couples is to focus on what is truly important to them and to make those things memorable.” B&G

ewlywed couples, regardless of their personal style, are likely to agree on one thing about weddings: the day flies by in an instant. And when hosting friends and family not seen in what seems like forever, that dossier of must-take photos can easily take a back seat. To remedy this, many brides and grooms are opting to have their official photos taken after the wedding, enabling them to enjoy their well-planned event rather than worry about missing their party and their guests. Whether it takes place the next day or after the honeymoon, a post-nuptial photo shoot can result in a more relaxed couple. True, many are opting to have photos taken before the ceremony gets underway, but even with that option, there may not be enough time to visit desired sites. Start with creating a timeline of your wedding day. When booking key appointments, such as hair, nails and makeup, be sure to include enough time for transportation. Once you see the day’s full plan, you may realize that your photography session might be better suited for another day.

What if your downtown wedding is everything you ever dreamed it could be, but you always envisioned a laid-back photo of you and your new spouse at the ocean’s edge? According to Robert Nunez of Artistic Expressions Photography in Bellingham, Mass., planning a post-nuptial photo session allows a special kind of freedom outside the confines of the wedding day. “The nicest thing about it is that you’re not under the gun,” he says. “You can go out and

take your time, and select any backdrop.” Couples looking to have a post-wedding photo session can visit the beaches of Cape Cod or even pose as far away as picturesque Martha’s Vineyard, all without time constraints. “He can rent a tux and you can get another bouquet or silk flowers,” Nunez suggests. The rest is simple. While every couple, planner and photographer should have a handy back-up plan for photo locations when Mother Nature does-

n’t cooperate, it doesn’t mean that an al fresco location has to be lost forever. Ceil Doros of Doros Photography in Shrewsbury, Mass., who works alongside her husband Bill, says they once worked with a couple who, unfortunately, encountered nothing but storms on their wedding day, resulting in an indoor shoot. After the event, the couple requested to have an outdoor photo session. “We had three hours to work, without having to rush to get to the reception,” says Doros. “It was really nice.” When planning your post-wedding photo session, it’s important to think about the feeling you want the photos to convey, as well as the additional costs that might be incurred. According to Henry Montville of HJM Photography in Auburn, Mass., couples thinking about a post-wedding photo shoot should consider additional rental costs for the tuxedo as well as other services. For example, if you want formal photos that duplicate the wedding day, you may need to book another round of hair and make-up appointments. Less formal images, which may include a softer look (barefoot, no veil, hair down and your own makeup) might be easier on the purse strings. If a post-wedding photo session sounds like the best option to meet your needs and schedule, discuss it with your photographer ahead of time.As most offer wedding packages, they might be able to customize one that includes both day-of and post-wedding coverage—not to mention other amenities, such as an engagement session or the au courant “trash the dress” photo shoot. Next, think about the locations you’re hoping to visit. Most historical and cultural sights have restricted hours and may not allow photography on certain areas of the property, so call ahead to see what would be available. Also, most of these types of locations—museums, historical estates, libraries and even some gardens—require a fee or donation that goes toward maintaining the site. With some thoughtful planning and careful considerations, a post-wedding photo shoot can potentially relieve a lot of stress and free up time in your wedding day schedule. Money marriage and

Five common mistakes newlyweds make, and how to avoid them by Cynthia Allegrezza

t has been said that love may move mountains, but money can crumble even the strongest marriage. “If you bring bad money habits to a relationship or fail to come up with a plan to merge your financial lives, you could potentially doom your marriage to money trouble—and endless arguments,” says Erin Burt, a contributing editor to Kiplinger.com. So whether your walk down the aisle is coming up or you’ve already gotten hitched, there are financial pitfalls to be aware of as a new couple. Here are five common stumbling blocks to watch out for.

1. Keeping money secrets Preparing for your wedding and honeymoon is certainly important, but so is your financial future. Waiting until after you’ve made the trip down the aisle to discuss your individual financial situations can be a big mistake, and is one many couples make. “If you look at the statistics, 47 percent of couples do not discuss money before marriage. That’s nearly half,” says Dr. Bonnie Eaker Weil, author of Financial Infidelity: Seven Steps to Conquering the #1 Relationship Wrecker (©2008, Hudson Street Press).

Set a date to discuss your goals and expectations, and come up with a plan for an effective merger of your financial lives. You should also agree that you’re going to disclose everything about your individual financial situations—both good and bad. “That means ’fessing up about student loans, credit card and other debts, as well as any major flubs in your past that could affect your partner,” Dr. Weil says. “When you get married, your credit stays separate, but that

does not mean your black marks will not come up when you want to purchase a home or a new car together. It is better to get them out in the open now so you can figure out how to tackle them together.” In fact, some of the most heated arguments stem from failing to discuss financial backgrounds, expectations and attitudes from the start. Communication is the key to the survival of any relationship, and baring your financial soul to your partner is no exception.

2. Living without a budget How will you handle daily spending decisions once you’re married? One of the first tasks newlyweds should tackle is creating a budget. This is particularly important if you’ll be living together for the first time or if you haven’t shared expenses before, according to Caroline Tiger, author of The Newlywed’s Instruction Manual: Essential Information, TroubleshootingTips and Advice for the FirstYear of Marriage (©2010, Quirk Books). “After you get married, it’s like a whole new universe because now you’re sharing a lot of expenses, such as housing, utilities and groceries, that you may have paid for on your own before,” says Tiger, who suggests listing your shared monthly expenses and individual expenses, and then discuss how you’re going to pay them. “Hopefully, you know how much money you each spend and on what. If you don’t, then before you get married is a perfect time to figure it out,” says Scott Palmer, co-author of First Comes Love,Then Comes Money:A Couple’s Guide to Financial Communication (©2009, HarperOne). “Think through every regular expense you have and write it down. Combine those totals to see how much you will spend together and compare it to your joint income. If it looks like you have some wiggle room, great. If you’ll be spending more than you’re earning, you’ll have some budget decisions to make.” When itemizing your expenses, identify those that are fixed, such as rent or a mortgage, car payments, insurance premiums and student-loan payments, and those that are flexible, such as utility and phone bills, groceries, transportation, trips to the ATM and miscellaneous purchases. “Track your actual spending for a couple of months to see where your money really goes,” Palmer suggests. “Building a budget is a great way to set common spending and saving goals, identify problems and work together to fix them.” For example, one of those saving goals could be to contribute regularly to savings or investments, as if you were paying a fixed bill each month. Talking about how much you each earn is also a must, as it will help you plan accordingly. “It’s amazing how many people do not really know how much their spouses are paid,” Palmer says.

No matter how you divide the responsibilities, Palmer suggests having a monthly “money date” to discuss the budget, review savings progress and discuss upcoming expenses. Make sure each of you knows where to find all the different account information, including Web sites, passwords and bill due dates. This will ensure that you’re both in the loop and that no one is left in the dark about your financial situation. Also, if you choose to combine your fi-

This is also an ideal time to discuss how much each of you can spend without consulting the other. You probably don’t want to discuss every $10 purchase, but you also don’t want to unexpectedly find a new sports car in the driveway, either. “Financial autonomy is a must. If you don’t have this financial independence, one spouse starts feeling like a parent and other like a child,” says Jean Chatzky, author of numerous books on money, including Pay It Down! From Debt to Wealth on $10 a Day (©2004, Portfolio). “That said, it helps to set a limit for how much you can spend without consulting your partner. Maybe $100 at the mall is okay, but a new television is not. Your threshold is going to vary based on what you can afford, but the point is that you agree to always discuss significant purchases.”

nances after you wed, make sure that major purchases and savings accounts are held in both names so that you each have equal access and can maintain a credit rating. “You do not want to find out in the event of a divorce that your name was not actually on the car title or savings accounts,” says Palmer.

4. Dragging your debt down the aisle If you can help it, it’s best to avoid beginning

3. Giving one person the financial reins Once the honeymoon is over, it’s time to get down to the nitty gritty of daily finances. Who will be responsible for paying the bills, monitoring the investment portfolio and filing taxes? One person may be more inclined toward these tasks, or you may decide to share the responsibility. “There’s nothing wrong with letting one person oversee the family finances, as long as both partners are okay with that decision,” Palmer says. “But that doesn’t mean the other person should be excluded.” It’s important for each person to feel involved in the big financial decisions and have an understanding of the day-to-day finances.

your marriage in the red. Student loans, car loans and credit card balances are often the culprits. However many newlyweds make the mistake of going too far into debt to pull off the wedding of their dreams, set up an exotic honeymoon or buy brand new furniture and state-of-the-art appliances for their home. Before you dig too deep, determine which expenses are necessary and which are worth a splurge, and cultivate a plan to pay for it all before you spend it.

Regardless of how debt was accumulated, if one of you brings it to the marriage, it is a problem for both of you—whether or not you combine your finances. However, you should never officially commingle your debt. Doing so could hurt the other’s credit score and make it difficult for one or both of you to get credit later. “There is no substitute for an honest conversation about paying off your debt,” says Palmer. “If you are in debt, tell your partner

about it. Figure out how the two of you will pay it off, how it will impact your finances for the next few years, and how you can work together to manage it. Figuring out your finances involves being honest and real.” Start with the balances that carry the highest interest rates and find out what it will take to pay them off. “Also, consolidating your own student loans to lock in low rates is a good move,” says Palmer. ”But, don’t merge your loans with your spouse’s. The comingled debt would be nearly impossible to untangle should you ever divorce, and if one of you were to default, the other would be left holding the bag.”

5. Failing to plan for an emergency Of course, no one likes to think about bad things happening, but in all the excitement of your engagement, wedding planning and beginning your married life together, it’s easy to overlook this important aspect of financial planning. First, assess your emergency stash of cash. According to financial experts, every couple should have enough money available to cover three to six months’ worth of living expenses. You never know when one of you will lose a job or have an unexpected medical bill. Then, make sure you have adequate insurance coverage, including health, auto, renter and homeowner. Keep in mind that adding your spouse to your health insurance may be cheaper than maintaining separate plans. Combining your auto insurance coverage will probably also save you money, and you’ll want make sure your homeowner’s or renter’s policies will protect your combined possessions. If you already have life insurance, either privately or through an employer, you may want to change your beneficiary information. The bottom line is, with communication, some financial savvy, common sense and an open mind, love and money really can mix. Set aside the time now with your fiancé(e) to determine your financial priorities as a couple so both of you can plan for your future hopes and dreams. WELL STRUNG Ceremony music to reflect your unique style by Andrea E. McHugh

hen footage of a Minnesota couple boogeying down the aisle with their bridal party to Chris Brown’s “Forever” hit YouTube, it became an instant sensation. The viral video was even reinterpreted on TV when Jim and Pam of NBC’s “The Office” tied the knot. Needless to say, many soon-to-bewed couples are likely thinking about their choice of music for their stroll to the altar. And while you certainly don’t have to make your entrance doing a choreographed number, you do have to select music that will be meaningful or reflect the style of the day.

When planning the music for your ceremony, take your first cue from the site in which it will be held. Houses of worship may have specific guidelines or restrictions on the number of musicians you can have, the vendors you can use and what songs may be deemed appropriate, so be sure to run any ideas by your ceremony coordinator before putting down any deposits. You’ll need to know a little about the space your musicians or vendors will be allotted as well. If you are

tying the knot outside, the world is your oyster, but the choir loft in that charming New England chapel may not be able to accommodate a six-piece ensemble. Second, consider who, if anyone, will be escorting you down the aisle, as it may affect your choice of music or song. When supermodel Gisele Bundchen wed New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady in 2009, they walked arm in arm to the simple serenade of a solo guitarist. Massachusetts’ favorite “Desperate

Housewife,” Marcia Cross, decided to walk down the aisle with both her parents to music performed by her sister Ellen, who played acoustic guitar and sang Paul McCartney’s “Only Love Remains.” Of course, elaborate accompaniments also make a grand splash.Trumpets, piano, organ, acoustic guitar or a harp are all popular options for ceremony music. You may also consider whether or not you’ll need to hire a vocalist (most churches, synagogues and secular sites should have a list of ceremony musicians they can recommend). Even though model/ actress Rebecca Romijn walked down the aisle to actor Jerry O’Connell at a private estate, she infused a bit of spiritual guidance by having a gospel choir do the musical honors. The bride made her way to her betrothed to a chorus of Foreigner’s classic, “I Want to Know What Love Is.” If considering a contemporary tune, look for songs with inspirational, romantic or sentimental lyrics, and good rhythm.Though she makes a living as comedy’s “Queen of Mean,” Lisa Lampanelli, who tied the knot in October 2010 at a private club in NewYork City, chose the powerful “I Will” by the Beatles for her walk down the aisle. With these lyrics, it’s not hard to imagine why:

One of the more popular songs to complement a wedding on or near a beach (or with a coastal theme) is the version of “Over the Rainbow” performed by Hawaiian artist Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwo’ole. This modern interpretation of the classic song, which was first made famous by Judy Garland’s recording for the movie “The Wizard of Oz,” is accompanied simply by a ukulele. There are much-loved jazz and reggae versions as well. A familiar instrumental can be equally as powerful during either a religious or secular ceremony. Bach’s “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring,” which does have lyrics but is more widely performed as an instrumental, “Ave Maria” and Pachelbel’s “Canon in D” are all uplifting songs that can be woven into different parts of the ceremony. On average, ceremonies have occasion for three songs—prelude, processional and recessional—to upwards of six and may include songs played during the parents’ seating, either as a continued part of the prelude or a subtle transition into a different tune; the wedding party entrance, which is usually a separate processional from the bride’s or is played at a softer volume; and during the lighting of a unity candle, the signing of a ketubah, a sand ceremony, throughout communion or during a devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Other cultural celebrations may include rites and traditions, such as the jumping of the broom, the Lazo, the Arras and more, which may invite instrumentals or songs. In most cases, if you’re having your ceremony in a church, it’s best to start with the house accompanist to secure musicians and vocalists. They may also be able to suggest unconventional musicians, such as bagpipers, who may lead the recessional up the aisle. If you are having your ceremony and reception in one location, your reception entertainment, whether a live band or DJ, will often offer a package that includes ceremony music, so be sure to explore that option before booking other musicians. Finally, while handpicking a song for each component of the ceremony sounds right for some, remember, “Here Comes the Bride” and “The Wedding March” have served many couples quite well. Ground Rules 1.The calorie counts are roughly the same for each breakfast, lunch and dinner, so if you don’t like one of the meals and want to replace it with one from another day—or would like to repeat a meal two days in a row— that’s fine. Switching one breakfast, lunch or dinner for another won’t affect how much weight you lose. 2.You’ll be eating plenty of food at meals, plus one afternoon snack. But if you get hun-

gry at other times of the day, feel free to have a piece of fruit. 3. Drink as much water, seltzer or herbal tea as you like, but limit your intake of coffee, tea or diet cola to two or three servings per day. 4. Vegetarians can simply omit the meat from the recipes that call for it and substitute half cups of black, pinto, cannelloni or garbanzo beans instead.

5. For variety during the second week of the diet, swap any fruit in the plan for one from this list: blueberries, raspberries, papaya, mango, watermelon, honeydew, cantaloupe, apple, orange, grapefruit or banana. Also, vary the bread. Try English muffins, pita pockets, tortillas or 100 percent whole grain rolls.

Handmade the Old Fashioned Way Fine Cakes, Desserts, Pastries & Baked Goods

What makes the low fat fare at Rancho La Puerta taste so sinfully delicious? Chef Bill Wavrin, author of The Rancho La Puerta Cookbook, and the mastermind behind the plan on these pages, shares a few of his secrets. Get fresh. Wavrin picks vegetables from his garden every day. “As soon as a vegetable is picked, it starts losing its flavor and nutritional value, so freshness matters,” he says. If you’ve got a brown thumb, visit your local farmers’ market or find a grocery store that sells great produce. Spice it up. Experiment with no-fat flavor enhancers, such as chili peppers, garlic, fresh cilantro and other herbs, curry, vinegars or a spritz of lime or lemon.

You are cordially invited… Wedding invitation trends for 2011 b y Ta r y n P l u m b

T

ECHNICALLY, IT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT

aspect of your wedding. Sure, there’s the dress, the floral displays and stylistic flourishes. Not to mention the music, reception, food and, most importantly, the ceremony. However, no one’s going to know about any of that—or experience it, for that matter—without first receiving the invitation. Beyond being an obvious essential, the invitation also serves to establish the mood and spirit of your big day, beginning with the moment your guests slip it from its envelope. “There’s so much inspiration behind the invitation; it isn’t just a piece of paper,” says Laura Ching, co-

founder of the online stationery store Wedding Paper Divas. While a classic ivory paper with raisedrelief lettering is always in fashion, invitations can be as stylish and personalized as the couples who choose them. And with so many options and resources available for invitation design, the sky’s the limit. “Brides and grooms today really want to tell a story,” says Kerry Amidon, product manager with the West Boylston-based Checkerboard invitation company. “They want to add their own personality to their wedding, starting with the invitation.” So what style is right for you? Invitation experts offer a range of options.

S

etting the stage

Karen Herzig, lead wedding designer for William Arthur, a stationery company based inWest Kennebunk, Maine, recommends design choices that will inform your guests of the formality of your event, be it traditional and black tie, or laid-back and intimate. For example, if you’re planning a rustic, backyard-style wedding, Ching suggests an invitation featuring a simple, airy, whimsical or hand-drawn design. Some couples have started to include photos on their invitations in order to convey their personalities or a feeling of intimacy. Photo selections can range from snuggly portraits to closeups of clasped hands. To set a romantic mood, Ching suggests utilizing watercolor designs with soft streaming colors and “elegant” brushstrokes.

Artistic use of color is a great way to impart a mood or theme. And while color options are vast and varied, the most popular preferences are forever in flux, and are very often influenced by fashion trends or the colors a couple has selected for the reception or bridesmaids dresses. For 2011, particularly trendy tones include bright, eye-catching oranges, purples, teals, limes and navy, according to Amy Grace, customer service manager and copywriter for InvitationBox. Amidon, meanwhile, describes a growing interest in violets, yellows and tinted metallic accents. Ching, for her part, notes that “yummy” colors such as oasis blue, eggplant and orange sherbet are catching the eyes of some couples. Experimentation is kept in check as couples tend to stick with two or three colors. The creativity often comes with unexpected pairings. However, Ching notes that muted colors, such as taupe, are just as popular. Herzig has also noticed an interest in a variety of blues, including navy, teal, indigo and robin’s egg. Accenting those, typically, are shades of plum, raspberry, yellow, mandarin and gold. The latter, although a traditional color, is “still very strong, and always will be,” Herzig says. www.bridegroommag.com

G

o ahead… embellish

In addition to an array of colors and color combinations, there are flourishes such as floral designs and trimmings of feathers and crystals. In terms of floral motifs, once-traditional tulips, roses and hydrangeas have evolved into snaking vines or an architectural styling of buds and petals, according to Grace. Embellishments of peacock and ostrich feathers or Swarovski crystals are also popular, as are ribbons, which add their own flair of color and can be customized with names or motifs. Other style statements include damask backings, layers of different colored paper, gilding, or embossed or beaded borders. “There’s a lot of interest in texture,” says Herzig.

P

aper pickings

As for what invitations can be printed on, papers with square or round corners are emerging and oversized cards are making a comeback. In fact, Herzig indicates thatWilliam Arthur has reintroduced a few products it discontinued several years ago. But once-popular paper styles aren’t the only things being recycled. Overall, there’s increased interest in eco-friendly products. William Arthur, for its part, offers bamboo paper and its regular papers are sourced entirely from sustainable forests. Meanwhile, Snail’s Pace, a new wedding line from Indiana-based Abbey Press, works almost exclusively with 100 percent post-consumer waste products and soy-based inks. While they don’t offer wedding invitations at this time, their line does offer bridal shower invitations, wedding congratulatory cards, scrapbook papers and gift bags. As far as designs and colors are concerned, product director and designer Ashley Verkamp says that ecofriendly products “have as much flexibility as traditional papers.” But while interest in going green is increasingly piqued these days, Grace says that many couples do stick with tradition by selecting a heavy paper stock.

Wedding Paper Divas

F

abulous phrasing

Tradition often reigns supreme in how invitations are worded. Grace finds that couples very often defer to the standard wedding etiquette of their parents announcing the event in a very straightforward and conventional manner. Still, some soon-to-be-wed couples are getting experimental with their invitation prose. Some examples Checkerboard highlights include: We invite you to join us as we are married with spirit, laughter and dancing until dawn. We will begin the life that we’ve dreamed of together with all of you beside us. Our two families invite you with happiness and excitement to come together and celebrate. “Couples don’t have to have an invitation that says,‘You are cordially invited to an event on this date,’” says Amidon. “They can be less generic and more touching.” However you decide to word your invitations, though, Grace emphasizes that you should convey your information clearly and concisely. When it comes to the actual printing, Herzig often sees the trend of at least two ink colors being used on the invitation, with the current favorites being coral, taupe and celery. Highlight and accent colors appear frequently as do monograms, often emphasized with larger or different colored fonts than the rest of the type. Calligraphy has also enjoyed a resurgence in popularity. “It’s really designing with font these days,” Herzig says.

Invitation Box

Ultimately, having such a vast range of options available means your invitation can be a personal, intimate entreaty to the friends and family you want present on your most special day. What better way to start off your new life together? B&G

budget. Costs for invitations can vacillate widely, anywhere from $1 to $7 apiece. “Plan ahead and figure out what you can afford,” Grace advises. In fact, once you have your date and location set, start looking at the design possibilities. Amidon suggests sending invitations out about three months in advance, so be sure to purchase them about a month prior to that. Also, experts advise having a friend or two proofread a draft before printing. Because today’s weddings often go far beyond one-day events, determine early on what extra information you want to provide to your guests. For instance, additional pieces inserted into the invitation can alert guests to rehearsal dinners, after parties or morning-after brunches. Maps and direction cards, a list of nearby accommo-

dations or even itineraries can also be included. But those extra pieces can inevitably create clutter, so the pocketed invitation has emerged as a dominant trend. According to Herzig, “they’ve grown by leaps and bounds over the last few years.” Essentially, the invitation features pockets that keep things neat and tidy. “It creates a beautiful presentation for the guests,” says Herzig. “It’s like a gift, an experience, rather than just opening up an envelope.” And don’t forget the save-the-date notice. While rare just a few years ago, Herzig finds they’ve become a necessity. Most often, they’re informal, including pictures of the happy couple on postcards or business cards. Designers suggest sending them out nine months to one year in advance. –TP www.bridegroommag.com

Massachusetts Both parties must apply for the license together and in person—whether or not you are a resident. Applications are made in the clerk’s office in any city or town in the commonwealth. Where you apply is where the marriage certificate will be filed. There is a waiting period of three days. This includes Sundays and holidays, but not the day upon which the application is submitted. The license is valid for 60 days from the date you file and can be used in any city or town in Massachusetts. There is a state fee of $4.00 for the license, but each town is allowed to set their own fee in addition to that. Check with your town clerk’s office for cost information. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older. Some towns may require proof, such as a birth certificate. Information specific to same-sex weddings in Massachusetts can be found at: www.glad. org/rights (click on the Massachusetts link), and www.lawlib.state.ma.us/subject/about/ gaymarriage.html. Rhode Island Individuals marrying in Rhode Island must apply for a marriage license at a city or town clerk’s office. If one party is a resident, the application must be made in that party’s town of residence. If neither party is a resident, the application must be made in the town where the ceremony will take place. Both parties must apply in person and sign the application in the presence of the city/ town clerk or the clerk’s assistant. The cost of the license is $24.00. The license is valid for three months after the issuance date. The marriage must take place in the presence of the officiant and two witnesses age 18 years or older.

Detailed marriage requirements for the state may be found online at: www.health. ri.gov/records/about/marriagelicenses. Please note: The requirements and information listed here are subject to change. For the most up-to-date information, contact your clerk’s office directly. If you’re marrying in another state (or having a destination wedding), be sure to check out the requirements for that area. Because those requirements will differ per location, it’s best to take care of this early in your planning. B&G

Need some help getting started? Here are a few tips to point you in the right direction. Begin with a budget How much money is available to spend? Who pays for what? Who makes the major spending decisions? When assessing these issues, make sure everyone involved is as clear, open, honest and—most importantly—as realistic as possible. The more that’s established and made clear now will make for easier planning and decision making later on.

Size things up The number of expected guests and the desired type of reception will set the tone for all other planning decisions, so it is important to get a handle on this early. The preliminary guest list should consist of the bride’s family and parents’ friends; the groom’s family and parents’ friends; and the couple’s friends. Since many locations may have requirements for the minimum and/or maximum number of guests, this information will be essential during your site search. Determine the specifications that will set the style of your party. Large or small? Formal or informal? Evening or daytime? Outside or inside? Winter, spring, summer or fall? Again, this information is a must-have for finding the ideal location (at the desired time and price).

Location, location, location This mantra is as meaningful for weddings as it is for real estate.Whether your site is a fabulous hall or hotel, a beautiful park or your own backyard, options abound. It all depends upon the size of your reception and budget.

The Most Beautiful Brides Come From… Use these sources to find your ideal site: local bridal magazines (like B&G), the Internet and references from family/friends.

Organization The best way to keep things running smoothly and stress levels manageable is to have some type of organizational system to sort out your planning information.Whether you use dedicated file folders, a binder or even just a single box, make this the place to keep all wedding-related data. But remember, this will only work if you are committed to it. Having a timetable may also help. We’ve provided one for you on p. 66.

Piccadilly Plaza 490 Shrewsbury Street Worcester 508-753-4426 Hours: M, Tue, F 10-6 W, Th 12-8 Sat. 10-5 Appointments suggested

Help Yes, it is your wedding but that doesn’t mean you have to do everything alone. Family members and close friends will most likely volunteer their services for any weddingplanning task.As a savvy project manager you will, of course, take them up on it.You may even ask them before they ask you! Keep in mind that delegating doesn’t mean compromising your vision; it means achieving it with less stress.

www.pronuptiabridals.com

The deciding factor So what really determines the size and scope of your wedding? For some, cash is king when it comes to decisions about size and location. For others, a particular artistic or thematic vision may determine the place and cost. Whatever the driving force, you might find that you’re addressing the first three tasks listed here simultaneously. Don’t panic: There’s no specific method for making these decisions. Your best bet is to keep a list of what’s most/least important to you. By prioritizing (and, in some cases, re-prioritizing) your wants and needs, you’ll be more equipped to make the “tough” choices. Same-sex marriages and name changes A party in a same-sex marriage in Massachusetts can legally change his/her surname with the Social Security Administration and on his/her driver’s license. According to the Web site for GLAD, the Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders organization (www.glad.org), the U.S. Department of State changed its policy last year regarding recognition of name changes.“Since Massachusetts has a statute that allows the Notice of Intention of Marriage to create a legal surname change, the Passport Agency will honor a Massachusetts marriage certificate for the purpose of changing your name on your passport.” More information about same-sex weddings in Massachusetts and other New England states can be found on the GLAD Web site. FLOWERS CAN BE A SIGNIFICANT DECORATIVE element for your wedding day, depending on how elaborate you want it to be.To help you find that fabulous florist, here are a few tips:

11 Brackett Court (off Shrewsbury Street)

1. Know your own style. Sure, you like flowers… but how do you like them arranged? Are there any particular blooms that strike your fancy? Check out bridal magazines, friends wedding photos and the Internet to find the styles you like most and least.

2. Now that you know your style preferences, what about that of a potential florist? Does it mirror or complement yours? If she favors modern and cutting edge designs while you prefer more Victorian and traditional styles, it might not be a good match. Here are some ways to find out if you will see eye to eye: • Ask about her artistic philosophies/ preferences. What designs does she like to create and why? • Ask to see photos of recent wedding work. • Ask to see any bouquets/arrangements in progress when you are at the shop. There is nothing like checking out the real thing. • Look around the shop; how it’s decorated and arranged will give you a good sense of her overall style. • Show the photos you have collected of what you like. What is the reaction? If she isn’t as excited by the designs as you are, move on to the next designer. 3. Know your budget and be up front about it with your florist, as it is as important as your artistic vision. The cost of your floral decorations can range from moderate to exorbitant, depending on everything from the amount of flowers used, to the types (orchids

will be infinitely more costly than carnations), to the size of the bouquets and centerpieces, etc. Knowing your budget will give the florist the parameters within which she has to work, which will help her to give suggestions on how to achieve your aesthetic vision reasonably. 4.You should also find out how the florist and her shop handle weddings. Here are some key questions to ask: • How many weddings do you do each week? How many will be done the weekend of my wedding? • Have you done any weddings at my ceremony and/or reception site? If so, do you have any suggestions for the types, colors and sizes of arrangements that might work well for my wedding? • I have a small budget, yet I would like to have as much color as possible. What suggestions do you have for maximizing my options? • Does your price include set up of the centerpieces (and other arrangements) at the reception site? Does it include decoration of my cake? Also, does it include any transportation of ceremony flowers to reception site? If not, what are the extra charges for these details? • Do you provide vases, arches, candelabras, etc. or do I need to provide them? If you do not and I am required to rent them, can you suggest a rental company? • May I provide my own vases, arches, candelabras, etc? If so, how will that affect the price? B&G

Ways to Save T HE

PLANNING HAS OFFICIALLY BEGUN.

You have worked out a preliminary guest list and are taking a hard look at your available funds. But are the numbers crunching the way you would like them to? Don’t worry… a terrific wedding can be had, even on a budget. Here is a list of 20 ways you can save in all aspects of your wedding. Basics 1. Track your expenses regularly to see how the numbers work with your budget. That way you will know if costs are getting out of control. 2. Plan far in advance. Time, as they say, is money. So the more time you have, the more money you can save. 3. Get married in the “off season.” Popular times of year are often more expensive than others. Look to the months of winter and early spring for available dates and discounted pricing. 4. Get married during the week. This is a great option for a small, intimate reception. For example, a Thursday night will likely be more available than a Friday or Saturday— and may offer better rates. 5. Look to your own backyard (or someone else’s). Whether it is for a ceremony and/or reception, you know the owner so there will not be any rental fees! 6. Cut the list. This is probably the toughest action to take, but reducing your head count is a sure-fire way to save big. 7. Ask your reception facility or caterer where you can trim costs. Options such as a beer/wine-only bar or fewer hors d’oeuvres/ desserts can yield significant savings. 8. Ask your baker about making a smaller cake to display at the reception and making sheet cakes to be cut and served. 9. Ask your photographer and videographer about decreasing the amount of coverage. Important things like the ceremony and formal photos can be covered by the pros; 78 Winter

2011

BRIDE&GROOM www.bridegroommag.com

you can leave the reception shots to your friends and family. 10. Share your ceremony flowers with another couple marrying the same day in your house of worship. 11. Look into using potted plants or dish gardens as centerpieces. They may end up being less expensive that cut flower arrangements. 12. Costs of live bands can rise due to the number of musicians. Look to bands that can vary the size of their ensemble. 13. If you are using a DJ and all you want is music, ask about eliminating the extras such as laser lighting and/or smoke machines, and inquire about limited emcee duties. 14. Simplicity is key. Consider doing without little details such as napkins with your names and wedding date, which can be costly when added to the other small details.

508-842-8992 - Shrewsbury, MA www.danielsonflowers.com

Attire 15. Borrow a dress. Whether it is your mother’s altered to suit you or a friend’s gown that is just your size, working with an alreadyworn gown can make a substantial impact to your budget. 16. Buy a sample dress. Many bridal salons will sell, at discounted prices, the samples they have used in the store. 17. Check out bridesmaid dresses. Available in a variety of colors—including white and ivory—this option will cost considerably less and will likely be delivered in a shorter time frame. Details 18. Keep postage costs down by limiting the number of inserts and using a lightweight invitation paper. Directions can be provided through your wedding Web site. 19. Bargain shop for favors. Buy in bulk wherever possible to save on the per unit costs. 20. Get help from talented family and friends who are crafty, artistic, musical, etc. It will make your wedding day more personal and fun and save you a few bucks! B&G

you’ll be looking for many of the same qualities and elements that you would in a photographer: style, quality of work, quality of equipment, etc. To help you in your search for the “right” videographer, here is a list of 25+ questions you should ask. 1. How long have you been documenting weddings? 2. Is this your full-time job? 3. How many weddings do you document in a year? 4. What is your style? Cinematic? Documentary? 5. Do you have references? (Quality, reputable experience is key.) 6. Do you belong to any professional organizations? If so, which ones and what are the criteria to be a member? 7. What size events have you recorded? (This will help determine if they have the equipment/staff needed to cover your day.) 8. Will you coordinate with my photographer? Have you worked with him/her before? 9. Do you have sample products I can view? If so, may I see raw footage of an event as well as its final cut? (Look to see if the camera work is steady, clear and well lit, and if the editing is smooth and seamless.) 10. How many cameras will cover the event? How many people? 11. Will you have backup equipment available on that day? 12. How much time will you need to set up your equipment? 13. What is your procedure for recording the ceremony? Are wireless microphones available? Do you use lighting (and if so, how bright is it)? 14. Do you charge by the hour or by a flat rate?

Courtesy Ericson Photography

15. Do you offer package plans? Do you have a payment schedule? 16. Are the costs of any assistants included in the price? 17. Is there an additional charge for overtime? 18. What type of camera and editing/ sound/lighting equipment do you use (digital or analog)? Is it commercial grade (high quality)? 19. If the equipment is analog, will I be receiving the final product on a VHS tape? If so, is a DVD version available? 20. Do you do the editing, or do you have a staff that does it? (Are you part of the process?) 21. Are special effects used in the final product? If so, how many? And may I opt to have those effects left out? 22. If background music is used in the final product, who selects it?

23. If providing a DVD, will the final product be sectioned into chapters for easier navigation? If not, is this an option I can request/purchase? 24. Is there an additional charge for extra copies? 25. Who keeps the original footage? 26. Can I buy the original unedited (raw) footage? 27. What are your criteria for selecting which “occurrences” to record? 28. Do you plan to interview guests during the reception? (If this is something you don’t want, let them know.) B&G

There is great beauty in the regions of the American West’s High Desert, inland areas that boast average elevations of 4,000 feet and consist of some spectacular terrain including rivers, rugged rangeland and semi-arid plateaus. Tumbleweed, sage and yucca trees (often called Joshua trees) appear across a landscape that can seem stark to those of us from the Northeast.Yet this rich environment is alive with more than 2,500 species of plants and 600 species of birds, and boasts big skies and giant saguaros that jut out of the desert scrub, silhouetted against the brilliant morning sunrises and evening sunsets. Your High Desert honeymoon can be richly enhanced by the spirituality of the Native Americans who live there. The regions also offer an array of activities, including hot air ballooning, white water rafting, horseback riding, mountain biking, jeep tours, nature hikes and golf. You can choose to explore the incredible outdoors, or you can simply remain at your resort to indulge in late mornings with breakfast in bed, spa treatments and lounging by the pool. other world. Its 16 log cabins are rustic, but comfortable with charming porches. Organic fruits and vegetables grown on site are used in breakfasts and dinners, which are included in rates starting at $245 per night for two. This is the place to be if you want a peaceful respite without any fuss, as there aren’t any televisions or phones. There is, however, great hiking, fishing in the canyon and scrumptious eating. Romantic Highs: Peace and quiet along with yoga in the outdoor pavilion and massages in your cabin.

Arizona Biltmore

Scottsdale, Arizona Clark Gable and Carole Lombard honeymooned at the legendary Arizona Biltmore, the spot where, inspired by the spectacular sunsets, a bartender created the now famous Tequila Sunrise cocktail. Set on 39 acres of gardens and lawns, the Arizona Biltmore is a full-service resort, with many places to eat and drink, ranging from elegant to casual. The spa is extensive and there are eight pools (the Catalina Pool was Marilyn Monroe’s favorite), two golf courses and seven tennis courts. Romantic Highs: Sip a Tequila Sunrise while relaxing around the outdoor fire pits; enjoy dinner on the patio at Frank & Albert’s restaurant; relax in the spa; and stroll the grounds, enjoying the statues and gardens.

Sedona, Arizona In Sedona, the majestic cliffs of Boynton Canyon burn fiery red against a cobalt sky. No wonder this oasis inspires the work of more than 200 resident artists. Toast your new life together on the terrace of your private hacienda at the Enchantment Resort. Casitas are decorated in natural colors accented with reds and blues, and your room may have a lofty beamed ceiling, beehive fireplace and deck. On-site activities include tennis, the Mii Amo Spa and a pitch ’n putt golf course, while hiking and biking trails meander along the walls of a canyon to native American ruins and caves. The spectacular canyon landscape is also in view—180 degrees worth—when you dine in theYavapi dining room. Romantic Highs: Here it’s all about the views while spirituality kicks in with the Native American program’s Talking Circle, Walk to the Ruins and Medicine Walk. 88 Winter

For a more intimate Sedona experience, check into El Portal, a 1920’s hacienda with just 12 unique luxury suites that is steps away from the Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village. Furnishings, many antique, are authentic to the early 1900s with wonderful Native American art and weavings, stained glass and carved wood pieces. Each room is different. The Arts & Crafts room has a king bed, beehive fireplace and French doors that lead to a private courtyard, while the Grand Canyon room has a heavy log beam ceiling, stained glass window enclave with a king bed and a private patio. Romantic Highs: King-sized beds, some handcrafted from juniper, are covered with cashmere blankets and Egyptian cotton sheets; two-person showers; a river-rock fireplace; and gourmet breakfasts served in your room or in the dining room or courtyard. Rancho de los Caballeros is a historic dude ranch resort on 20,000 acres in the Sonoran Desert, about 55 miles northwest of Phoenix, Ariz. Think cookouts under the stars, horseback riding with a choice of mounts from a 100-horse corral, and jeep tours through the hills. This is a place where everyone knows your favorite horse and you can unwind in their spa with a Desert Oasis Massage or a Hohokam massage using oils of juniper, sage, cypress, lavender and cedar wood. You can bunk down in one of the rooms in the historic hacienda or in one of the casitas. Meals, as at most dude ranches, are included in the rates and feature items like Achiote-rubbed pork tenderloin and grilled Black Angus steak. Men will need to wear jackets or western-style vests at dinner for they are, after all, standing in for the “caballeros,” or gentlemen, who explored and settled these parts. Romantic Highs: The Maricopa suites are perfect for honeymooners, featuring king beds, spa tubs and wet bars.

Sante Fe, New Mexico High Desert magic definitely weaves its spell around Santa Fe. Cactus flowers abound, brilliant cobalt skies and the blue Sangre de Cristo Mountains envelop you, and the Rio Grande beckons. There is an incredible variety of art work ranging from silver and turquoise jewelry to fine pottery and stone animal fetishes of the Zuni Native Americans. Keshi, a co-op for Zuni arts and crafts, contains a fantastic collection of these authentic hand-carved fetishes. In the midst of one of Santa Fe’s most historic and artistic areas is The Inn on the Alameda, a small Pueblo-style hotel where two-story adobe buildings are arranged around garden courtyards for an intimate, private experience. The intimate Casa de las Chimeneas (House of the Chimneys), a bed and breakfast in Taos just a few blocks from the heart of town, is an exceptional small place offering an oasis for travel-weary visitors. Set behind adobe walls in beautiful High Desert gardens, Case de las Chimeneas has its own spa, hot tub and rooms with private courtyards and fireplaces, plus a beautiful Great Room filled with Indian pottery and artifacts. Some rooms have private sitting areas, sunken tubs, skylights and fireplaces; all have colorful collections of woven tapestries and bed covers and high beamed ceilings. La Sala de Patron features a massive carved headboard, fireplace and two-person jetted tub. Romantic Highs: Relaxing in the hot tub under the night skies; spa showers; private entrances; couples massages; and incredible breakfasts. As one famous cowboy, John Wayne, once said, “Tomorrow is the most important thing in life. Comes to us at midnight very clean. It’s perfect when it arrives and it puts itself in our hands. It hopes we’ve learned something from yesterday.” This happens in the High Desert. B&G Katharine Dyson is a regular contributor to BRIDE&GROOM™ Magazine. BRIDE&GROOM

“Staying in a privately owned luxury villa is like living the life of the rich and famous,” says Jennifer Lawrence, owner of Casa Bay Villas, a Connecticut-based company specializing in vacation rentals in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. “It’s completely different than staying in a hotel. It’s living in a fantasy.” Lawrence helped Nicole Markel and Ben McMillan of Los Angeles, Calif., select Casa Aventura, a six-bedroom, five-and-a-half bathroom, 7,000square-foot retreat for their May 2010 wedding and honeymoon. “Casa Aventura is amazing, with sweeping views of the ocean, jungles and an incredible staff,” Nicole raves. “Our immediate family stayed at the villa, while the rest of our guests stayed nearby.” A cook prepared two sumptuous meals each day for the honeymooners and guests. And, when anyone wanted to sample the dining and nightlife scene of downtown PuertoVallarta, a concierge arranged for taxis. “This was our first time renting a villa,” Nicole says. “We don’t think we can ever go back to hotels. It was a far superior experience.” For the fifth consecutive year, Conde Nast Traveler has named Marilyn Pulito, owner of the Massachusetts-based Villas in Paradise, as one of its Villa Rental Specialists for the island of St. Martin. “Privacy is the number one reason more honeymoon couples are

Unlike a hotel, where even a large suite is barely more than a room or two, we had this entire luxury home to ourselves.” Robyn Shepherd and Alex Drolet of Westport, Conn., held their Barbados wedding and honeymoon at Mullins Mill Villa, a converted 17th-century sugar mill on a private beach surrounded by tropical gardens. “This was a once-in-a-lifetime trip,” Robyn says. “We wanted to be in place that was special for our intiNicole Markel and Ben McMillan mate wedding and have a house as a arranged their wedding and honeyvery personal home base.” she says. moon at the villa Casa Aventura in The rental agency they used, Bajan PuertoVallarta, Mexico, through Casa BayVillas in Stratford, Conn. Courtney recalls. The couple awoke each morning to a panoramic view of the surrounding islands, and at dusk, they “had cocktail hour on a remote beach, watched the sunset from our own infinity pool and hoped each day would last forever.” Following an August wedding on Cape Cod, David Tordi whisked his Boston bride, Daria Huber, back to his native Italy. There, on a private estate just 20 minutes outside of Florence, the honeymooners hosted their closest family and friends in a celebration of their nuptials. As one of the three partners of Teseotur, a travel agency specializing in villa, home and apartment rentals in central Italy, David handpicked the Villa il Vigneto for its magnificent setting, skillfully restored interiors and easy access to touring the Chianti hill towns. Simply put, “We had the best of both worlds.” Dr. Lisa Romagnoli and Gonzalo Gioni of Wellesley, Mass., became engaged during a trip to Italy last July. “We rented through ParkerVillas and enjoyed it so much we returned for our honeymoon,” says Lisa. Owner/operator Mario Scalzi takes great

pride in personally choosing every Parker Villa property. “Our true talent has always been the ability to bring each traveler’s dream of Italy to life,” says Scalzi. His Web site provides every possible detail for a villa vacation, including advantages, décor, costs, creature comforts and comparisons to hotels. “If you look at each day as an adventure and find yourself excited with the prospect of being on your own, a villa is a good bet.” For their 12-day honeymoon in October, Lisa and Gonzalo re-rented their engagement villa, Alabastro, in Volterra, Italy, as well as a second villa, Albero, on the Italian Riviera. “We would recommend this to couples looking to experience Italy at their own pace,” she says.

Lisa Romagnoli and Gonzalo Gioni enjoyed part of their 12-day Italian honeymoon at the villa Alabastro in Volterra, where they had gotten engaged.
