A note about our Spring cover photo As we have all been anxiously awaiting spring, we decided to create our own spring in this “spring has sprung” inspired shoot. Ella Farrell coordinated with Olio to secure the amazing venue. Shortly after she reached out to Jenny of All Aboard Event Planning to help her pull all pieces together. Jenny then brought in her Lead Stylist, Danielle to handle the styling and design of this project. We knew we wanted to go wild with florals so we chose one of the best florists we know to conquer this large project, Holly with Flair! Floral & Event Design. Over 6 weeks of work went into making this project happen with over a dozen extremely talented vendors just in time for Spring to arrive!

“By shopping at a local small business, you get more,” says Maria Buduo of Maria’s Fine Jewelry, a trusted 38-year mainstay in downtown Worcester, MA. “A small business has the ability to provide personable, memorable, hands-on customer service. You can feel their passion, dedication…and find unique, well-made products,” from staffers who know your name, are familiar with inventory, and put your needs ahead of racking up sales. “You can sort out issues by speaking directly to the owner, rather than with an overseas call center,” she says. With few exceptions, “all our vendors were locally owned businesses. We worked directly and met them at least once before our wedding day.” The Hurst’s signage (at the bar, favor table, welcome sign, guest book, and card box) was created by ArtStudio54, an independent vendor they discovered at the Crompton Collective in Worcester. Monica says that another of her excellent decisions was to design invitations with Nancy and Judy Whalen of Creative Papers in Shrewsbury, MA. Up until then, Monica found herself “completely overwhelmed… spending hours scrolling through online invitation options and putting a lot of unnecessary pressure on myself” to cut costs. In the end, she shares, ”the beautiful product and amazing customer service we received was more cost-efficient and valuable than anything I found online.” Nancy Whalen agrees: “There’s nothing like having the ability to touch and feel the card stock, view hundreds of sample invitations, and actually have a true professional… to guide you through all the steps of choosing and designing the best invitation at the best price,” as opposed to dealing with a stranger on the internet. Similarly, ”Engaged couples should entertain using locally grown and sourced flowers,” says Susan Falso of Cherryhill Flowers. “The varieties are endless; the freshness, colors, and the scents are amazing.” By dealing with a dependable local florist, who can obtain locally sourced foliage, you will not only receive arrangements especially created for your wedding day, but save on additional shipping costs. “If you see a wedding gown online, and the price seems unbelievable, it probably is!” says Sally Lorensen Conant, Ph.D., certified wedding gown specialist and owner of Orange Restoration Labs. “The dress you buy online may be nothing like the photo when it arrives. When you shop in your community, you can rely on what you see…and depend on trained consultants to be sure you are completely aisle-ready” for your big day. 14 Spring 2019

Jennifer and Jacob met in high school when they both worked at the same grocery store; Jake bagged the groceries that Jennifer rang up. They became friends and went to prom together. Jake moved to California after college, but they reconnected when he moved home five years later. They met up for dinner one night and have been together ever since.

The couple got engaged on the Fourth of July, which has always been Jennifer’s favorite holiday. They spent July 3rd at a friend’s beach house in Marshfield and then went to a cookout at her parents’ house the next day. Jake always jokes about the fact that, whenever they go to the beach, Jennifer collect rocks and brings a few home. They had just gotten home from the above-mentioned holiday and were relaxing when Jake asked, “Are these the rocks you found at the beach? I found a rock at the beach too!” When Jennifer went over to see, Jake had an engagement ring and he proposed. It was the perfect moment with just the two of them. They started looking for a venue online right after they got engaged. Harrington Farm was the first place they visited, in August 2017, and they both loved it so much that they booked their date for the following August. They knew that they wanted an outside ceremony in a barn so Harrington Farm was the perfect fit with its beautiful outdoor spaces and charming old farmhouse. www.bridegroommag.com

One of the highlights for Jennifer was the quest for the perfect dress. Here’s how the process unfolded: “I had seen it on Instagram and messaged Allure asking for the style number. They responded that the dress was not out yet and was part of the upcoming spring 2018 bridal collection. When I saw that Allure was having a spring trunk show at Alexandra’s Boutique in Fall River, I made an appointment. When the day came, I looked through the collection and picked out a handful of dresses to try on. That dress was the first one I tried on and I knew it was the one. I tried the others on, but I didn’t change my mind. When I put the dress on the second time, I unexpectedly started to cry. My mom, my sister, Jake’s mom, and I had a champagne toast.”

“You simply can’t go wrong with the food there—everything is amazing!” Most couples enjoy the food tasting phase of wedding planning and Jennifer and Jacob are no exception. The food tasting at Harrington Farm is done with other couples who are also getting married at the venue. An array of tables are set up, each with different linens and centerpieces. Jennifer related, “It was fun to see the different looks you could choose for your reception. The food was so good. I wrote down notes as we tried different appetizers and dishes, and we laughed later when we looked back because all of my notes said ‘delicious’ or ‘so good’ or ‘yummy.’ You simply can’t go wrong with the food there—everything is amazing!” The couple chose jewel-tones as the color scheme— from the bridesmaids’ dresses to the colored glass bottles spread around the venue with flowers. Some of the bottles came from a personal collection that Jennifer had acquired from antique and secondhand stores over the years. While they were planning the wedding, she remained on the lookout for bottles of different colors and sizes.

Jennifer’s dad is a beekeeper and she has always enjoyed helping him. So much so, that they incorporated a bee motif into the wedding and the favors. They also had a custom mirror designed by Emma at Gold Heart Designs. “Emma designed a beautiful mirror and added a bee into the design,” said Jennifer. Extending the bee theme for the wedding, the favors were jars of honey and beeswax candles. All of the honey came from hives kept by Jennifer’s parents at Turtle Brook Honey in Plainville, MA, and the candles were handmade from wax from their hives. Jennifer’s mom melted down and cleaned the wax, and they poured all of the candles themselves. The flowers came from Inspired Flora in Franklin, MA. Regan is a friend of the family and does beautiful work. She created loose bohemianinspired bouquets with muted shades of ivory, peach, plum, and blue flowers with light blue/ grey greens. The bridesmaids wore dresses from LuLus and Azazie. Makeup and hair was done by I Do Wedding Hair and Makeup. Memorable moments for Jennifer include, “getting ready with my mom, Jake’s mom, and my bridesmaids. That day, the forecast said there was a chance of thunderstorms all day. We checked in with Harrington Farm a few times throughout the morning because we had to decide if we wanted the chairs set up outside or inside. We decided to go with outside and hoped the rain would hold off. It did! The cocktail hour was outside and right as it was ending, the sky opened up and it started to pour! Everyone made it inside just in time. The rain held off and it was almost like we custom ordered a perfect day.” When asked if she had any advice for future brides and grooms, Jennifer responded, “I would tell them to enjoy the day. Everyone told us it would go by fast and it did. I wish I could have slowed it down. Just remember that, in the end, the only thing that matters is that you get to be with the one you love. The day is about you. Take a moment to step back—just the two of you—and look at all the family and friends who love you and came today to celebrate you. It is truly special.”

While subdued beiges, whites, and pastels will always be popular (and safe) choices, top wedding influencers are currently showcasing rich and vivid hues. “We see this trend going through the industry right now, and we think it’s here to stay,” observes Shana Perry of Love & Perry Photography. “Couples are choosing bolder colors for their big day more and more”…eye-catching tones, “that fit with the time of year they are getting married.” Noting that “reds, greens, yellows, gold, maroons, blues, and even oranges are super trendy right now,” Perry recalls photographing an October 2018 barn wedding that featured a range of pale apricot-to-rich-salmon tones throughout the bridal party’s attire, table linens, and flowers. Only two months later, global color authority Pantone proclaimed Living Coral as its 2019 Color of the Year. Described as “an animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge,” this bold shade radiates versatility. “I think it’s important to add color—even if it’s a deeper shade of a base color—into any wedding palette,” says Victoria Warren, lead wedding planner and founder of Everlasting Affairs. “Several of our couples have incorporated salmon, pink, burgundy, gold, orange, navy, purple, green, and even yellow, into their color schemes. The colors they choose reflect their personalities…and we love it!” She encourages clients “to utilize colors that complement their venue” while ensuring the end result remains cohesive. To achieve that end, she recommends, picking one or two neutral base colors such as white and grey, “then bringing in a ‘pop’ of color to brighten the space” and serve as a focal point. Your coordinator should be able to help steer you away from tricky color combinations and towards hues that complement each other.

“It’s all about balance,” maintains Elizabeth O’Zemko of O’Zemko Designs. Since her business customizes wedding décor and gifts, she understands how small details play a large role. “From the time you send your save the date, until the last thank you and everything in-between, bright colors can be beautiful in healthy amounts.” For example, if you’re featuring a bright yellow wedding cake, “it makes the most sense to have a cake sign that doesn’t clash, but rather complements the yellow.” An “easy way to throw in a bold color would be though your florals,” shares Michelle D. Martinez, owner of Allure Consulting & Event Planning who is also the creator and co-host of The Big Wedding Planning Podcast. She cites classic examples of “red roses against a white wedding gown” or a ruby-red rose centerpiece atop a white tablecloth set with white china.

dark pinks, and light to dark greens for spring; saffron, fuchsia, and emerald greens for summer; and burnt orange, mauves, purples, warm caramels, and vintage pink for fall.” Martinez is also noticing couples selecting “bold colors that work around a theme. “I did an Alice in Wonderland–themed wedding with lots of coral and cobalt blue accents. Currently, I’m helping a couple who want design elements inspired by India, so we’re using saffron, fuchsia, emerald green, and gold. The invitations are emerald green with gold foil print; the linens will be ivory, and the florals will have saffron, fuchsia, yellows, and greens. We will also be floating marigolds in the pool.” Her advice to brides and grooms who still may be intimidated about choosing bold colors, may feel creatively challenged, or who “don’t know where to begin” is: “Just think of your favorite color and that of your partner’s and use those!” Cindy Papish Gerber is a regular contributor to BRIDE&GROOM™. As the dispensaries open up around New England in Massachusetts, Vermont, and Maine, the marijuana industry is booming and adapting at every moment. With legalization comes a plethora of creative products that appeal to different crowds—from edibles to oils to elegant pipes and bongs. But this victory also brings a lot of questions: How will pot affect the alcohol industry? How do I choose what to consume and how from the myriad options? Should I offer weed at my wedding? How would I even do that? Lucky for us, expert Philip Wolf, CEO of the Cannabis Wedding Expo, has some advice.

To Weed or Not to Weed? The first issue every couple should consider is whether or not they personally want cannabis involved in their wedding. “Whether they are cannabis consumers or not, it’s become the responsibility of the bride and groom to at least think about this question, but also to give the guests options,” says Wolf. People who are traveling from faraway places–places that may not have the access to dispensaries that New England does—will appreciate the choice. “At least have a section where people can consume,” Wolf advises. “As far as couples who are consumers on the regular, this is their big day. On your big day, you should incorporate what you love.”

Wolf notes, “It really depends on whether the couple wants consumption outward facing or inward. For some couples, they keep it as simple as the ritual of smoking a joint before going down the aisle. I think the common attitude for cannabis right now is more internal and not outwardly expressed; there are plenty of couples who consume while they’re getting ready. A lot of times, when people travel to a state where it’s legal, they’ll know which of their guests are consumers and put a gift in their gift bag. But they know who is getting what bag.”

and comfortable. Double check that your venue is weed friendly, and assure them that you’re staying within the law. If you’re going to mellow out while getting ready, make sure your hair and makeup artists are comfortable. And you definitely want to have a conversation with the guests’ hotel so you can let your guests know if it’s okay to consume and advise them where to purchase if you aren’t providing. If you are going to be serving cannabis products, Wolf advises, “You must have an educated person who is serving it. If people haven’t consumed in a while or are curious first timers, you need someone who is well-informed to answer questions. An educated budtender or chef and serving staff will make sure people understand what they are consuming. Also think about hiring a cannabis wedding planner. They do everything a wedding planner does, but they also can advise about the consumption of cannabis and how it’s going to make people feel.” If you do serve edibles, make sure they’re labelled and not within the reach of children. Innovative Ideas Now that we’ve asked the important questions, here are a few trends worth considering: • Cannabis Décor: Says Wolf, “Cannabis leaves and flowers are beautiful and also have beautiful aromas.” Add a bit of bud to your bouquet or incorporate the flowers into your table arrangements.

Anyone who follows the wedding industry knows that the latest trend in jewelry is personal expression. Brides today enjoy the freedom of creating their own unique style and accessorizing with elements that resonate with their hearts. We reached out to area jewelers to see what’s sparking in their shops this season.

Julia McGuinn of Sachs Jewelers informs us that today’s brides favor stackable wedding bands and mixed metals, and there’s a definite preference for alternating white diamonds with gemstones like rubies, emeralds, and diamonds. “We see a lot of brides creating stackable wedding bands comprised of small, delicate and microthin bands that they stack on either side of their diamond,” says McGuinn. She notes that many brides are mixing white, yellow, and rose gold, making the days of matchy-matchy a part of history. An up-and-coming trend that McGuinn has spotted is the popularity of broaches. “Broaches are hot!” she exclaims, pointing out that many brides are creating stunning bespoke floral bridal bouquets curated from a medley of broach flowers.
Grooms are also expressing themselves in nontraditional ways. McGuinn sees many grooms selecting bands designed with materials like tungsten carbide and meteorite. “Meteorite rings are a big trend with men who are creating really cool rings,” notes McGuinn.

Sandy Shaul of Golden Link Fine Jewelry sees alternative metals trending for men, as well as customization. Her husband, Haviv, delights in creating custom bands for couples that reflect their style and illuminate their love for each other. He notes that he has crafted many same-sex rings for couples who desire bespoke bands. Sandy also says that brides are all about “glitter, gold, big and bold,” describing how voguish brides are making statements this season with dazzling pieces. Brides are also taking advantage of the gorgeous pieces available that feature cubic zirconia.
According to celebrity and wedding stylist Diane Lloyde Roth, some brides are deciding to go all white, and pearls are back in style in a fresh new way. Moonstones are a favorite as well. And to keep things on the cutting edge of contemporary, the Pantone 2019 Color of the Year, Living Coral, has been popping up in wedding jewelry.
McGuinn also relates that she sees many brides selecting beaded bracelets strung on silk cords. “There’s no chance of tugging if there isn’t a clasp,” she notes.
