or some brides-to-be, just the mere thought of trying on gowns creates anxiety. Concerns about her perceived imperfections, such as weight, height, or shape, can sabotage any bride’s gown-shopping experience. “Let’s be honest, almost every woman has at least one body feature she doesn’t like,” says Deryn Donovan, owner of Penny Jane Bridal. “The good news--is that many designers” have tackled this dilemma, “by offering custom sizing to actually make the dress to bride’s specific measurements.” In other words, you don’t need supermodel measurements to look fabulous on your wedding day.

“Many brides are pleasantly surprised that they can carry off a design they previously avoided.”

Danielle L’Esperance explains why she considered herself a “hard to fit” body type when she was shopping for a wedding gown: “Although I’m small—5’1”—and fit, I was insecure about looking ‘too young’ or finding a gown that would fit me proportionally.” She describes her initial gown search as unsuccessful and overwhelming. Going “back to the drawing board,” Danielle happily achieved dress-success at Penny Jane. “Deryn’s customized

approach of going outside the box to adapt an off-the-shoulder sweetheart neckline and a beaded lace fit and flare gown “complemented everything I wanted it to” Danielle recalls, “And it never made me feel like I was playing dress up. By Deryn’s estimate, 80% of Brides, especially ones with a challenging fit—end up buying a completely different style than the one they originally wanted. She encourages customers to keep an open mind and trust their consultants. “Leave it to the professionals instead of relying on websites, which will lead to disappointment,” says Annmarie Therriault, owner of Couture Bridal Co. “There are a lot of misconceptions that dictate which shapes can’t wear certain styles. Many brides are pleasantly surprised that they can carry off a design they previously avoided.” Since most dresses require special ordering, Therriault maintains, “There’s always something that will need tailoring. It’s very rare that someone comes in needing no alterations.” Sarah Plouffe’s gown search was, “a little stressful because I tried on about forty dresses at two dress shops until I found www.bridegroommag.com

the one for me.” Thanks to Annmarie’s guidance, Sarah selected a perfect-fitting Maggie Sottero ball gown that required alterations to just the length and top. Annmarie advises gown-seekers to stay calm and not to rush or become unduly influenced by too many opinions. To stay body-positive during fittings, Morgana Allen at Hovey Couture suggests bringing at least one person with you for moral support, trusting your first reactions, and practicing a little self-care. “Love yourself for who you are,” she offers. “We can often be our own worst critics.” “If you understand your shape, a smart designer can work with you to highlight your most flattering features and disguise the ones you’re not so fond of,” Morgana adds. “However, if you have major fit issues and alterations could push you over-budget, then having a custom made piece can save time and the frustration of extra tailoring.” desireeduganphotography.com

Esther Viola Kurtz knew that most gowns would be too baggy across her chest. She also knew that halter-neck styles look good on her small frame, and she preferred an open back that showed off her toned shoulders. Most importantly, her dress needed to incorporate fabric from an heirloom 1930s wedding dress into the final design. Ultimately, she felt “incredibly lucky to have Morgana create my dream dress!” It fit her body flawlessly, was comfortable, and impeccably matched Esther’s unique personal style. “Brides I work with have problems with the bust fitting but not the waist or vice versa,” says Morgana. “Torso lengths and bust-to-waist ratios can be tricky if you’re not having something custom made.” “Most women do not fit to an exact size on our size chart,” states Niki Adams, director of Bridal Accounts at Alexandra Grecco. “This is why we offer split sizing for all of our gowns. Brides can order a different size for the bodice and skirt, making the initial fit much closer to her true size and minimizing alterations.” Other options include adding boning for structure and support, raising necklines and backlines. Know that bridal sizes run differently, meaning the size on your gown won’t typically match your jeans size. “And that’s fine!” assures Niki. “The goal is to find a gown that makes you feel beautiful. There are numerous style options available, and something perfect for everyone.” Cindy Papish Gerber is a regular contributor to BRIDE&GROOM™. She writes from Connecticut.

On the last day of summer vacation in 2008, before returning to Johnson & Wales in Rhode Island for her senior year, Stephanie spent some time with her two best friends from high school who worked at Roche Bros. They asked their co-worker, Alvin, to come along, and they all went to Legacy Place in Dedham. Stephanie and Alvin didn’t interact much at first, but when they stopped to take a picture on the big L.L. Bean boot, they began to talk and ended up hitting it off. Alvin found Stephanie on Facebook and sent her a message, asking her for her number. They remained friends while Stephanie finished college, and they started dating in 2012. Stephanie remembered, “I actually thought he liked my friend back in the day, but it turned out he liked me!

“Because Butternut Farm has such beautiful greenery, they kept the ceremony décor simple with a flower archway that matched the bouquets and centerpieces.”

On a trip to England to visit one of Stephanie’s cousins in 2017, the couple became engaged. While they were on a family outing to Brighton Pier, Stephanie’s cousin Angela said that her daughter, Siena, had something to tell everyone, but first, they all needed to be blindfolded. When Angela gave them the cue to take off their blindfolds, there was Alvin down on one knee. “I was so shocked and happy. I honestly thought my cousin was pregnant again and she was doing a gender reveal of some sort,” said Stephanie. Alvin devised the ring box out of an L.L. Bean boot— he got a keychain and put the ring in there and proposed with that. It was an extra sweet touch, bringing them back to when they first met.

Alvin and Stephanie took a year and a half to plan the wedding, getting both families involved in a lot of the DIY. They looked at a lot of venues, but when Stephanie saw Butternut Farm on The Knot website, she knew they had to check it out. Once they visited, they realized that this venue, with its beautiful outdoor green space and ballroom, was just what they wanted. “Erin and Hope were so great to work with—so accommodating and helpful and always willing to answer questions.” Butternut offers a vendor inclusive package (#1ClickWeddingDone) to make the planning easier. We trusted their experience with the vendors and knew we were getting the best.

The color palette was Rustic Pink, and the décor had lots of wood accents with burlap and lace. Pink has always been Stephanie’s favorite color, and the hue complemented the wood accents nicely. Since Alvin and Stephanie are both foodies, they wanted to incorporate cuisine from both of their cultures; Alvin is from Albania, and Stephanie’s family is Italian-American. A small set of oil and vinegar cruets made the perfect favor for everyone. There were also bonbonieres (boxes containing candy) with limoncello-flavored almonds. Limoncello is a staple holiday after-dinner drink in Stephanie’s family, so it was only fitting to include it somehow. For the centerpieces, they decorated mason jars with burlap and lace around the middle and a pink ribbon around the top before handing the jars off to the florist who added soft pink roses and baby’s breath. The centerpieces alternated between the flower jars and a glass jar full of twinkly lights. Because Butternut Farm has such beautiful greenery, they kept the ceremony décor simple with a flower archway that matched the bouquets and centerpieces. Frugal Flowers created bouquets for the bridesmaids with light pink roses and baby’s breath wrapped with burlap. The bride’s bouquet was the same, but with a touch of purple. Alvin made the wood board for the seating chart, then they incorporated more twine and burlap, and strung it onto the wood board. The food was chosen to cater to a wide range of tastes. For cocktail hour, there was a stationary antipasto table and Mediterranean platters to represent both of their cultures. Dinner was a choice of maple-glazed salmon or prime rib, and the vegetarian choice was butternut squash raviolis. The white cake from Montilio’s was brushed with Grand Marnier and filled with whipped strawberry creme. The cake decoration was simple and elegant and, of course, pink, with ruffled edges. There was a cake topper of the bride pulling the groom—a comic touch in honor of the couple’s shared sense of humor. They also happen to both love s’mores, so they had Montilio’s make them s’more jars. Around each jar it said S’more Lovin’. Stephanie was grateful for the bakery’s flexibility, gushing, “These jars were custom, and they had no problem doing them. Both the cake and the jars came out great—just the way we imagined—and it all tasted delicious as well.” When Stephanie went looking for a dress, she wanted sleeves and lace, but not flower lace, and she wanted it to be form fitting. Jessica at Camila’s in Arlington picked out five dresses of that description, and Stephanie like all five of them, but she was able to narrow it down to one. “I picked my dress because It suited me. It was exactly my style with lace, straps, and a low back.”

22 Winter 2019

BRIDE&GROOM

Stephanie knew she wanted her bridesmaids to have dresses with a lace top to complement her dress, but the exact shade of pink was difficult to match. They found what they were looking for at David’s Bridal. The groom and his attendants went to Men’s Warehouse and got navy suits. The groomsmen wore pink ties and pocket squares and Alvin wore a white tie with a pink pocket square. Scott Arrington from Murray Hill Talent provided the entertainment. “He did a great job and worked with us on all of our requests.” The couple surprised their guests by hiring Albanian dancers to start off the reception. When the DJ announced the dancers and they came out on the dance floor, Stephanie and Alvin enjoyed seeing everyone’s surprised expressions. “It was a great way to start off the night because it got everyone ready to dance and brought in Alvin’s culture.” And because Stephanie has an obsession with donuts, Alvin made a donut wall with donuts from Linda’s Donuts in Belmont, MA, which, naturally, was a big hit with the guests. Stephanie advises future brides and grooms to “enjoy the process and all of the hard work you put into it because the day goes by fast!”

Light Up Your Wedding by Stacey Marcus

Since the beginning of time, humankind has used fire for all sorts of things such cooking, heating, and lighting. Today, couples getting married are using this magical force to light up their weddings in fireplaces and firepits. Here are some suggestions from wedding professionals and local venues for adding light and warmth to your wedding ceremony and reception:

Gurney’s Newport Resort & Marina

Gurney’s Newport Resort & Marina “Couples getting married at Gurney’s Newport love utilizing the outdoor deck at the Regent Lounge for cocktail receptions year-round, as the three-tiered outdoor deck features fourteen fire pits and undisturbed views of the famed Newport Bridge.” David Smiley, Resort Manager Harrington Farm “Couples adore using the fireplaces at Harrington Farm to light up their weddings. Placing family photos on the mantle with flowers and flickering candles creates a gorgeous backdrop. We also have a lovely area right outside the barn featuring a bluestone patio with lounge seating and a stone fireplace that is a great spot to gather for a drink or cigar. The setting serves as one of the many unique backdrops for wedding photos at Harrington Farm.” Traci Swenson, Director of Sales and Senior Wedding Planner Harrington Farm www.bridegroommag.com

Revere Hotel Boston Common “The Revere Hotel Boston Common’s Rooftop@Revere private deck has become a favorite ceremony and reception spot for brides and grooms…situated overlooking the Boston skyline, its builtin firepit adds a cozy ambiance and a (literal) sense of warmth; it also creates unique photo opportunities for the couple, family, and friends.” Julie Brandon, Regional Vice President of Sales & Marketing Boston Marriott Burlington “Located in the Boston Marriott Burlington, CHOPPS American Bar and Grill sets the stage for an intimate gathering with its double-sided fireplace that adds charm to the already inviting space. Wedding parties can celebrate with drinks from the nearby bar and capture beautiful photography with the added warmth of a fire. The fireplace adds simplicity to an environment without the need of additional busy décor, since, after all, it’s the people who make the party.” Janelle Lowrey, Senior Catering Sales Manager Harding Allen Estate “Our fireplace in the mansion Spanish Room features a Spanish quote in red ink across the top from the story of Don Quixote for all travelers to enjoy their stay at the estate. It’s a beautiful spot for couples to take photos of the start of their new journey together.” Carmine Gugliotti, owner

Cliff House “The firepit area at Cliff House is a magical spot offering couples and their guests breathtaking views and an inviting atmosphere, Along with being a great location to host a welcome reception complete with a gourmet s’mores station, it’s also is a cozy spot to host an outdoor ceremony in spring and fall, accommodate the overflow from a cocktail hour, and to capture unique family photos.” Meagan Cowan, Event Services Manager, Food & Beverage 28 Winter 2019

Berkshires-Wheatleigh “Couples strive for an evening of experience for all of their guests, so they supply options. Especially here in the Berkshires, people want that cozy but luxurious feeling, and so they gravitate towards lounge areas and firepits for their guests who aren’t huge dancers or who are just taking a break. Also, s’mores bars are HUGE! Everyone wants them and everyone wants to do them gourmet style. And in order to make s’mores, you need some fire, right?” Danielle Pellerin, Berkshire Events Planner Adding Flowers to the Mix A great way to add another design element to the fireplace is to add flowers. “When I walk into a room and see a fireplace, it says to me that it wants to be adorned with something that can be personalized—something that will reflect the couple’s style. It automatically gets me thinking creatively in terms of how I can accentuate the mantle while still incorporating the rest of the room’s floral design. It’s always exciting to see one in the venue since I know guests will automatically pay attention to it once it’s decorated.” Tori Samuel of Winston Flowers

Here are two beautiful fireplaces decorated by Tori: Belle Mer The room itself is very white and the couple wanted to infuse as much color as possible. Different types of garden and spray roses were paired with Dutch delphinium and hydrangea, along with camellia greenery and smilax vines. Candles were added to the design since candlelight and flowers match perfectly.

The Hampshire House The design here is more of a green garland that helps to frame the fireplace. It’s a very romantic look when paired with the lanterns and the flowers, and overall it serves as a wonderful frame for dramatic wedding photos. It’s a statement piece that elevates the architectural design of the fireplace itself. Stacey Marcus is a freelance writer based in Marblehead.

Michelle Leroux and Alexander Yazdi were married on October 6, 2018, at Harrington Farm in Princeton, MA. Although the two went to high school together, Michelle and Alex met again in May 2016, when Michelle got a part-time job as a bartender at Amici Trattoria. Alex trained Michelle on the bar and their chemistry was immediately apparent to everyone around them. Customers, coworkers— even Michelle’s Mom—all knew there was a future in store for these two. After months of denying what everyone else already knew, the two finally gave in to fate, went on their first date, and never looked back. Although Michelle and Alex had initially refused to believe they were anything more than best friends, the foundation of their strong relationship is a friendship, and they wouldn’t have it any other way. Since the two fell in love during fall, and bonded over their love for all things pumpkin spice, it seemed only fitting they should have an autumn wedding.

www.bridegroommag.com

31

“After overcoming an overwhelming sense of joy, excitement, and a little bit of (a lot of) anxiety,” Alex begins, “I worked up the courage to pay a visit to Michelle’s parents. We hugged, we laughed, and we cried. It’s like they knew why I was there.” Alex received the blessing he came for, as well as a ring that had belonged to Michelle’s grandmother. Alex continues, “Now, I’d love to sit here and tell you I orchestrated some elaborate and romantic proposal, but I’d be lying. Of course, I envisioned one, and even played it out hundreds of times in my head. When I returned home from meeting with her parents, I saw my future wife standing in front of the mirror getting ready for us to go out. I saw her standing there in her bathrobe, hair halfway done, and Crest White Strips freshly applied. I saw the most beautiful girl I had ever seen in my entire life standing there before me, and that’s when instinct took over.”

32 Winter 2019

BRIDE&GROOM

Michelle ripped off the white strips off and, with sparkling white teeth, she said “yes.” “What I love most about Alex is how much he makes me laugh, and the night he proposed was no exception!” The couple planned their wedding for about 17 months (engaged in May, married the following October). Their favorite memory during the planning process was visiting the venue for the first time and knowing immediately that it was the place they wanted to be married. Going back for various meetings and the food tasting event with both sets of parents made it even more exciting and real. “Plus the food is delicious,” Michelle explained.

www.bridegroommag.com

33

Michelle and Alex chose Harrington Farm because they wanted a rustic yet formal venue. They knew they wanted to get married outside, but it was also important for there to be a beautiful indoor space to have the ceremony in case of inclement weather. In addition to the patio where the ceremony ultimately took place, Harrington Farm also has a beautiful stone fireplace that they fell in love with, so they knew that either option would be perfect. It didn’t hurt that they had heard wonderful things, particularly about the amazing food. The theme was Fall in Love, since autumn is their favorite season, and they also started dating in the fall. They expressed their shared love of pumpkin spice everything, by incorporating pumpkins in the decor and in the centerpieces, which were white pumpkins with floral arrangements inside. The wedding cake was a delicious pumpkin spice semi-naked cake from the Bean Counter. There were mini white pumpkins placed throughout the room as well. Keeping up with the autumnal theme, guests were offered apple cider donuts from Tougas Farm as a late-night snack—a big hit, especially for the donut-loving flower girl and ring bearer. The signature drink was spiked hot apple cider. Welcome bags at the hotel included pumpkin spice granola bars, apples, and homemade apple pumpkin muffins made by the mother of the groom.

Saying Thank You What Couples Need to Know Today by Connie Jeske Crane

It’s not surprising that, with lots of couples embracing a more casual wedding vibe, there’s some confusion out there about traditional etiquette, including etiquette about thank you cards. According to wedding industry insiders, couples today have lots of questions ranging from, “Do I need to send thank you cards?” and “Can’t I just email people?” to fuzziness about timelines: “I can wait a year to send out my thank you notes, right?”

36 Winter 2019

BRIDE&GROOM

So in today’s digital world, how should couples convey their heartfelt thanks to their guests? It seems like a great time to revisit etiquette for this time-honored tradition. Here’s what we learned:

Saying Thank You Is Still Important Even if you’ve heard anecdotal reports of couples omitting this step, the first thing to know is thank you cards are still a must – at least according to leading etiquette sources such as the Emily Post Institute. Forgoing thank you cards is not a great idea, agrees Joe Rogers, founder of Contagious Events (www.contagiousevents. net) in Boston. “It’s not something that we are encouraging, and I hope I can say that it’s not something that applies to our clients.” Beyond that, Rogers says he’s also advising his clients to buck the trend towards late responses. “There seems to be a myth that has been growing in popularity, that couples have a full year to send thank you cards according to etiquette, and that’s not the case.” The guideline advised by Rogers (and the Emily Post Institute) is to send your cards out within three months of your wedding.

www.bridegroommag.com

37

Lots of New Tools Here’s the good news: Couples today have some new tools to make this big job easier and full-on creative. Many apps let you design cards, pull in your wedding photos as graphic elements, create video messages, and even create a digital address book. (See the sidebar for details.) “One tool we really love is called Postable,” says Rogers. “It creates an address book for our couples and that way everything is housed in one place. I think that’s really important because, if you’re collecting addresses for invitations, that means you also have them for your thank you cards.” Online tools can also help you keep track of gifts received and thank you cards you’ve sent.

38 Winter 2019

BRIDE&GROOM

Photo Formats Are Trending If you want a cutting-edge product, cards that incorporate your wedding photography in fresh ways are all the rage. Even Prince Harry and Meghan Markle applied this format in 2018, featuring a romantic black-and-white wedding portrait on their thank you notes. Rogers advises talking to your photographer early, and if he or she can turn around images fairly quickly, this route can be “really fun and different.” In Waltham, photographer Lara Woolfson of Studio Nouveau (thestudionouveau.com) is gaining kudos for her unique accordion-style photographic cards. She says they’re her most popular and favorite cards. “They’re multidimensional, hold several images to share with guests, and are printed on fine art matte Hahnemühle paper, so they feel expensive and fantastic.”

The Rules Are Loosening a Bit While digital is certainly not the norm for thank you cards, Rogers says some couples might be able to bend the rules a bit. “Going by strict etiquette, the written thank you is still the answer. My response to my clients is ‘You know your guests more than anyone else’ and for some couples a digital thank you might be more accepted… I think a digital thank you is okay as long as it’s fitting for the recipient.”

A Personal Touch Is Key “For a guest who gives a gift at the wedding, it’s a nice touch to mention the item specifically, and if you can work in how you plan to use it as well,” says Rogers. With members of your wedding party, he says, “It’s a great idea to include some memories of the wedding that you shared with that person.” And he recommends sending a card even to guests who didn’t send a gift. “I think it’s still important to send them a thank you note acknowledging they took the time and sometimes money to travel to the wedding.”

Technology to the Rescue If you want a hand with those thank you cards, here are some of great digital tools you can take advantage of: Canva (canva.com) – Offers customizable wedding thank you card templates. Minted (minted.com) – Offers customizable designs, photo cards, and a thank you card guide. Postable (postable.com) – Prints, stamps, and mails all of your cards for you. Postagram (sincerely.com/postagram) – Create and send thank you postcards from anywhere, anytime—even while you’re on your honeymoon. ThankView (thankview.com) – A video app that lets you create personalized thank you videos.

Steve and I met the day after I moved home from college. We were working together at a local restaurant. We quickly became friends and started dating shortly after. Steve proposed on our five-year anniversary of dating. We were staying overnight in Newport to celebrate, and he surprised me by cancelling the hotel reservations I had and upgrading our accommodations to Hotel Viking. I thought he was joking at first when we pulled into the driveway; the place was so gorgeous. He planned to propose on the roof deck, but he was afraid I would notice the box in his pocket, so he waited until we got back to our room to change for dinner. We went to dinner after the proposal and I was so excited that I didn’t even realize I was holding the menu upside down.

We started planning almost immediately and picked a date two years away. We only went to see one venue—Bloom Meadows. At the time, it was still in the construction phase, and we made our decision based on blue prints and renderings. As an exhibit designer, my clients trust my renderings and drawings to make decisions from, so I figured I could do the same. We live in Central Mass and have family and friends from Vermont and New York. Bloom Meadows was the perfect middle point for everyone to travel to and the perfect venue for the vision we had of our wedding. It’s charming and intimate and nestled on a gorgeous piece of land in the Berkshires.

“Bloom Meadows is charming and intimate and nestled on a gorgeous piece of land in the Berkshires.” Being a designer, I was hands on with a lot of the details. I designed every piece of my invitation suite and all the day-of signage and stationery. I worked with the Laughing Owl Press in Kane, Pennsylvania, to create letterpress invitations and RSVP cards. I went with a clean black font and white paper. We wrapped the invitations in vellum and tied them with black hemp. Elevation3d, the company I work for, was kind enough to produce custom acrylic table numbers, signage, and a seating chart. I am Cuban and my husband is Greek, so we gave a nod to our cultures by labeling certain elements in Spanish, Greek, and English. We chose the Hudson Cake Studio in Hudson Valley, New York, to make the cake. With our busy schedules, we couldn’t make it out there for a tasting so Kerri, the owner, sent us mason jars filled with cake samples. She was so accommodating and great to work with. Steve picked up his tuxedo a few days before the wedding, and when he went to try it on, one sleeve was significantly longer than the other. We’re convinced they tailored the same sleeve twice! www.bridegroommag.com

45

We were able to get into the venue a couple days before the wedding, so we could assemble the tablescapes and interior décor. We used vases, table runners, and brass candlesticks to create a unique and edgy bohemian look. We did our best to use flowers and decorations that would last past the wedding day. We incorporated the wedding favors into the the place settings and used them as place cards. The table florals were made up of air plants, pampas grass, and ivory roses in contemporary bud vases. I knew I wouldn’t have time to do everything myself so, for personal flowers and ceremony décor, I worked with Melissa from Poppytree Floral Designs in West Sand Lake, New York, and Weathered Wood in Troy, New York. We went back and forth with inspiration boards and sketches to create the perfect mix of florals and natural elements. Melissa truly brought those ideas to life. We went with a limited color palette for the event, so our bouquets were made up of mostly natural elements like pheasant feathers, pampas grass, and cotton stems. We added a giant ivory king protea to my bouquet. These elements carried over to the ceremony backdrop, which was a circular weathered wood structure, and the adornment for our Angel Chair—our way of remembering family members who are no longer with us.

Ship of Dreams: Planning Your Ultimate Honeymoon Cruise by Cindy Papish Gerber

Why should couples consider taking a honeymoon cruise? “There are many reasons,” offers Ted Goulet, an accredited cruise counselor with Cruise Planners in Worcester, MA. “Cruises can be all-inclusive, and you see and do a lot that otherwise might prove costly.” Yet the most compelling reason, is the lure of “exotic and romantic ports of call.”

48 Winter 2019

BRIDE&GROOM

With so many itineraries, cruise lines, and ships to choose from, landlocked couples may be mystified about where and when to set sail. In Goulet’s experience, the advantages of “working with a professional to find the best fit and at the right price” far outweighs searching for discount cruises that won’t offer what you want. During their interview process with Cruise Planners, Josh and Jess Wren expressed a wish to see different parts of Europe—“something exciting that neither had done or gone to before,” Goulet recalls. Following his suggestion, they booked an Avalon Waterways river cruise along the Danube. This amazing honeymoon covered all of what they were looking for, including “a nice romantic stopover to end their honeymoon in Paris.” River cruises and boutique-style ships “are taking the large cruise ship experience and SLOWING IT DOWN,” emphasizes Katie Gerhard, director of sales for Eastern USA and Eastern Canada Azamara Club Cruises. “The most important part of small-ship cruising is experiencing destinations while connecting on a local cultural level. We bring local entertainment onboard, because we spend more time (including overnights) in ports. You never wait in a line; the ships pull into city centers versus being out of town at a shipyard. The service is intimate because the crew knows your likes and dislikes.” One of Gerhard’s favorite cruises goes from “Singapore to Mumbai, through Southeast Asia, crossing the Bay of Bengal.” She recently accompanied twelve independent honeymoon couples on a ten-night luxury voyage from Barcelona to Athens. “They chose this inclusive cruise because the itinerary gave them Spain, France, Italy and Greece ... while sailing on a beautiful boutique hotel at sea.” Karen Quinn Panzer, owner of Dream Vacations/Quinn Panzer Travel, finds most honeymooners prefer to visit trending ports throughout Europe, like the

Galapagos, Malta, Tahiti, and Bali on smaller luxury ships with “fewer families onboard and younger and more active guests.” For those interested in state-of-the-art entertainment and more dining choices, Panzer continues, “then larger ships are going to be a better fit.” A cruise “balances the opportunity to see many different destinations,” while relaxing (or staying active) at sea,” Panzer says. “You don’t have to worry about unpacking and packing; you know upfront exactly how much the cruise will cost …so there are no surprises. It’s worry-free travel.” Most importantly, the Celebrity Cruises press center advises couples “to keep the destination in mind. Celebrity Cruises offers 300 different destinations on all seven continents. There’s a plethora of options to choose from. The real question one should ask is, What type of adventure am I looking for? It really comes

down to preference. If you’re looking for a sense of community and a more intimate experience, you should consider Celebrity Flora (launching May 2019), a chic 100-passenger vessel, oozing with modern luxury.” These smaller ships sail to some unique global destinations, such as the Galapagos Islands, the United Arab Emirates, Asia, New Zealand, Australia, and even Antarctica. Larger ships like the Celebrity Edge, “boast more bells and whistles,” visiting exciting ports and cities in the Caribbean and Mediterranean. The perfect honeymoon cruise line is one that has a wide selection of unique itineraries to choose from, along with an assortment of romantic extras. Perfection is in the eyes of the couple!” During Seth and Margaret Furman Leventhal’s honeymoon cruise from Vancouver to Alaska on the Island Princess, the staff ”placed balloons and a Just Married sign on the door; the maître d’ gave as a private table for two during our assigned dinner seating,” says Margaret. While Margaret acknowledges that, “you do not go to Alaska looking for a warm honeymoon,” she explains that, after evaluating “many locations and cruise lines, we were very happy with our choice.” Memories of looking out at ”the glaciers right from the balcony of our room, how the water was crystal blue, and the air was cool and clean left an indelible image in our minds.” Cindy Papish Gerber is a regular contributor to BRIDE&GROOM™. nyone living in New England can attest to its bounty of local produce. If you’ve ever filled a basket with fresh blueberries in Maine or picked an apple from an orchard in the Berkshires, you know the sheer delight one feels when enjoying local produce. We asked six chefs to share their favorite season and fruit to inspire ripe ideas for your wedding menu. Here is what they had to say:

Blackberry Nectarine Cobbler from Grill 23 & Bar

Chestnut Cake from ArtBar

Apples in the Fall “Apples are my favorite fruit for fall — you can do so many things with them. Candied, spiced, or baked, they are fun to play with. Our Sharp Cheddar Apple Crostata is a twist on traditional apple pie with a slice of cheddar cheese on top. I love pears this time of year as well. They’re very versatile and plentiful during fall, and with warm chai spices, they pair nicely with our Chestnut Cake,” says Christina Allen-Flores, executive pastry chef at ArtBar in Cambridge. Stone Fruits in the Late Summer Executive pastry chef Valerie Nin of Grill 23 & Bar in Boston says, “My favorite season is stone fruit season, which is usually late summer, early fall. Especially that sweet spot when nectarines overlap local blackberries. We get our blackberries from a local farmer (Pio Angelini) and they are the best blackberries I’ve ever had. They pair perfectly with the nectarines to make the most amazing cobblers and pies. I love to have them served warm with cinnamon ice cream.”

“Apples are my favorite fruit for fall — you can do so many things with them. Candied, spiced, or baked, they are fun to play with.” Jamming in the Winter “I like the option of using all the perfectly ripe fruits and showcasing them in a very simplistic preparation. I love turning fruit like peaches and apricots and berries like raspberries and strawberries into a jam or jelly to use with cakes, cookies, or a spread for house-made bread. The best part of enjoying jams in the winter is that it takes you on a sweet trip to a warm day in the summer in New England,” says Ken Lingle, executive chef at Reflections, the onsite restaurant at the Row Hotel at Boston’s Assembly Row. www.bridegroommag.com

Autumn Fruit Tart from Chautauqua Harbor Hotel

A Medley in the Fall In Chautauqua County, we pride ourselves on the quality of our local items. Our area is abundant with small businesses and local farmers. Infusing fresh produce and local ingredients into our desserts and featured items helps our local economy and promotes our business as well. An example of one of our dessert offerings is our Autumn Fruit Tart, which features blueberry, blackberry, raspberry, and apple,” says Chautauqua Harbor Hotel executive chef Justin Carlsonin.

Berries in the Summer “I really enjoy cooking with berries in the summer, and New England’s blueberries are especially great. This year, we offered a unique blueberry cheesecake at ArtScience that highlights a number of sensorial elements specific to summertime, including charring and pickling techniques, with fruity and floral accents,” says pastry chef Ryan Boya of ArtScience Culture Lab & Café in Cambridge.

Hey Good Look’n salon & spa

by Diana Whelan Picking the right hair and makeup vendor is such an important part of your wedding—it might even be just as important as picking your gown, considering it’s also something you wear all night! As the bride, all eyes will be on you, not to mention all those photos that will last a lifetime. It’s okay to want to look your best. Luckily, there’s a highly acclaimed yet affordable hair, makeup, and nail salon in Fitchburg, MA. Owner Vicki Manchester gives us the scoop on what makes Hey Good Look’n Salon and Spa stand out.

BRIDE&GROOM

How would you describe your hair q: and makeup style?

a:

Our makeup style is more of a natural look; however, we do have experience with the dramatic as well as mixing natural and dramatic for the right touch. We like to make everyone in the wedding party look cohesive, so no one outshines the bride. When it comes to hair, the bride’s comfortability is most important. We want a style where she feels like an elegant and/or gorgeous version of herself.

q: What makes your services unique? a: We go beyond just hair and make-

up. When I do a consultation, I go over what the entire day will look like with the bride and help her make the day-of schedule. Since we’re usually the first vendor to arrive on the wedding day, we want to ensure the whole day goes according to plan. After the consultation, I take pictures of the style with the bride’s phone, so she can study it (and make absolute sure she likes what she sees), and I also take photos with my phone. This gives me a reference for the wedding as well as all the notes I take as sometimes consultations are done many months before the wedding date. I really try to think of everything for the bride—chances are, she’s never planned a wedding before!

q: What should a bride look for when choosing a hair vendor?

a:

It’s always good to get recommendations from friends or family, check out reviews, and come in for a consultation to make sure the chemistry is right. You should feel like the person working on you is following your train of thought and is going to listen to you as the bride. At Hey Good Look’n Salon and Spa, we always make sure to ask how you are feeling with everything throughout the process. If the vendor isn’t going to listen and work with you, it’s not worth it.

q: Any advice on choosing a hairstyle? a: The hairstyle you choose should

make you feel gorgeous, sexy and that

you will be the only one in the room. The hairstyle should flow with the style of the dress and be comfortable enough to last for hours as well as work with your hair. Two of the more popular styles are all up or half up, half down. These styles work best when wearing a veil and some headpieces. While all down can be soft and romantic, it can create a challenge for keeping the veil in. The bride should also think about all the dancing she will doing when choosing a hairstyle.

people feel good about themselves. We also like to be involved in and give back to the community. Whatever your vision is, that’s what I aspire to make happen for you. We truly have a passion for making people feel good; when they feel good, we feel good!

q: What are the prices of your services? a: Our hair ranges from $65 to $85 based on hair type, length, and thickness (shorter hair may be less). Regular Makeup is $65, airbrush makeup is $80 and lashes are $25. We offer any child under 10 complimentary light makeup so they can feel part of the party. Our prices are the same across the board even for the bride. We also offer spa parties for bachelorette parties, which are super fun. We offer nails, pedicures and massages.

q: Is there anything else you want potential customers to know?

a:

We’re all about our customers! It’s important they feel comfortable here. We’re family here—we build relationships and great rapport with our clients. I love making people happy and I love it when

Boxboro Regency Hotel is not your typical New England wedding venue. It’s a distinctly different, warm and fun place to celebrate a momentous occasion. With high ceilings and transom windows surrounding the upper levels of the space, the Courtyard provides a light and breezy outdoorsy feel, even on the coldest of winter days. 60 Winter 2019

BRIDE&GROOM

By day, the sun dramatically streams into the area, and at night, the courtyard is illuminated by hundreds of twinkle lights that lend more than a bit of romance to the room. The space seats up to 250 people for formal plated dinners or a buffet—your choice. The Courtyard, has a staircase flanked by beautiful indoor water fountains, which is great for pictures; a giant gazebo that does double duty as a place for wedding ceremonies; and a fabulous dance floor. There’s also the Pavilion Bar, which is conveniently located in the Courtyard as well. “In the center of this unique property is a giant atrium, an enclosure we call the Courtyard,” said Carlee Magliozzi, the Boxboro Regency’s wedding specialist. “When couples and guests walk into our courtyard, it’s truly unexpected. It’s a space that sells itself, because it’s so different from any other event setting around, and when weddings are in full swing, the happy couple is literally celebrating in the heart of the hotel. Although it’s large in size, with balconies up above, it’s also an intimate space surrounded by lush plants that offer an almost tropical feel.” Those in need of additional capacity or who desire a more traditional feel will enjoy the Grand Ballroom at the Boxboro Regency. This 5,760-square-foot ballroom has an attached yet separate Terrace Bar, and it offers a blank palette ready for brides and grooms to make their own. This room seats up to 350 guests comfortably and provides great versatility in setup and style. Flexibility is a mainstay at the Boxboro Regency Hotel; there are great choices at every turn. Couples can choose from two full-service wedding packages, known as the Gold and the Diamond. These packages offer brides and grooms varying levels of everything they need to make the day special.

The Gold Package provides an assortment of menu items, including plated meals, such as a prime rib dinner or a popular and savory stuffed chicken breast, as well as a whole host of many newly updated menu items from the venue’s on-site full-service culinary team. A pre-wedding tasting is included for all couples, as well as a block of discounted guest rooms made available to the wedding attendees. A hospitality suite is provided for the bride and groom on the day of the wedding where they can get ready for the ceremony and later enjoy some private time with their bridal party, sipping champagne and sampling hors d’oeuvres before the reception gets going. A champagne toast is included at the reception, as well as a complimentary honeymoon suite for when the group celebration is over. 62 Winter 2019

BRIDE&GROOM

The Diamond Package takes it to the next level by including everything in the Gold Package, plus a wedding cake budget, floral centerpieces, and hot passed hors d’oeuvres, to name just a few amenities. Either package is a great value, but those on a tighter budget are welcome to work with the hotel’s wedding team to create an affordable event that meets their individual needs. The staff at the Boxboro Regency Hotel provides a renewed emphasis on working with each couple to make their wedding vision come to life, and with 143 guest rooms (many newly renovated) and a unique Courtyard that puts you and your wedding front and center, the Boxboro Regency promises to be so much more than your average hotel wedding spot. Be sure to check it out! It is centrally lo-

cated—45 minutes from Boston, 25 minutes from Worcester, and just 35 minutes from Nashua, NH. It’s conveniently tucked in just off of Route 495 in what appears to be an unassuming hotel setting, but don’t assume anything when you’re looking for a wedding venue to call your own. The Boxboro Regency is full of surprises and features a renewed focus on weddings. Jennifer McNally Monac is a freelance writer and real estate agent, who lives and works on Cape Cod.

When it comes to grooms, style makers have a pretty clear message for 2019: Have fun! With options ranging from showstopper colors to jubilant patterns and textures, some observers are calling this the most exciting time ever for men’s wedding fashion. To get a better sense of the trends, we talked to Stephanie Muñoz, a senior style advisor at Boston-based 9tailors (9tailors. com), a company known for its premium handmade custom suits and dress shirts. In looking ahead, Muñoz predicts the following styles will be the looks that fashion-forward grooms and groomsmen will want to rock:

1. Playful Colors, Patterns, & Textures Move over classic black and navy blue. Muñoz tells us of a rather non-traditional look that is trending, especially among younger grooms. “What’s really huge right now – Gucci had it, Vuitton had it – is a lot of plaids, stripes, and colors definitely!” You’re seeing a lot of the fall plums, deep maroons. Navy is always a classic for sure—guys always love going with navy or midnight blue—but I’m also seeing a lot of men trying the plaids with their tuxedos and it’s fun because we don’t always see it.” In a similar vein, earlier this year, GQ magazine announced

the arrival of wedding “suits that are big, bold, and beautiful,” picturing natty ensembles in everything from green, blue, and plum shades to bold stripes and florals. Texture, adds Muñoz, is also very on-trend. “A lot of clients are looking to add a little bit more of an element or character to their suit by choosing a fabric—let’s say a bird’s eye or a striped herring bone—and it just creates a really beautiful texture with the suit. Guys end up loving the fact that their suits are not just a solid basic color but have a little bit more dimension and character.” Whether grooms go all out or stick to bold choices for single elements like accessories, the overarching theme is playfulness and exploring what’s available. “I definitely push my clients a bit outside of their comfort zone,” says Muñoz. “And they enjoy it because, once they have it on they say, ‘I didn’t think it would look good, but I like it!’ And I say, ‘Trust the process.’” continued on page 66

2. The Three-Piece Suit Muñoz is happy to report that one of her personal style favorites is trending for 2019: the three-piece suit. “This is a way for grooms to set themselves apart from their groomsmen and guests. They’re able to look dapper with their threepiece, and once they take the jacket off, they’re still looking dressed up; they still look great.” She also loves the look of vests that carry the main fabric over to the back rather than swapping in satin. “That’s one thing that 9tailors offers, and it just gives it so much more character.” Photo: Joao Conceicao

3. Contemporary Tailoring For the younger demographic especially, tailoring trends continue to embrace a slimmer profile and shorter pant hems. As Muñoz explains, “Younger men are the ones who will wear a semi-break in the length of their pants to show a little bit of sock, as opposed to the classic traditional man who doesn’t want to show any sock. Younger grooms are also wearing the skinnier look—a more tapered or Euro slim fit.”

Jose Ruiz Photography

66 Winter 2019

BRIDE&GROOM

4. Happy Accessories

5. Being True to Yourself

The love of all things bold extends to accessories and yes, happy socks don’t seem to be going anywhere yet. “Socks are huge, especially with the younger men when they’re wearing a semi-break hem,” says Muñoz. For men who want a change of pace from argyle, GQ magazine highlights some new options out there in coordinating “softer and solid tones.” Men can also bring in hints of color and pattern with bow ties and pocket squares, says Muñoz. “Go for fun prints, fun colors—nothing that’s too traditional.” Finally, when it comes to shoes, she says, “Brown is always big—a brown wing tip.”

As fun as some of the trends may be, Muñoz says the bottom line should be for the grooms to feel a great comfort and confidence in what they’re wearing on their wedding day. She advises men to take their time, see what’s out there, discover what they like, and seek reputable advice. “I tell my clients that you can’t allow the suit to wear you – you have to make sure that you are wearing the suit at the end of the day.”

ou know those amazing love stories that couples share, where they tell you how one simple yet crucially important occurrence led to another whole series of events that dramatically hinged on timing and luck? As the story goes on, so does the synergy, and the stars align magically. Passion with a dash of blind faith come together to create an inspiring fairy tale that is destined to last a lifetime. You’ve heard stories like that, right? Well, that’s pretty much what happened when newlyweds Babe and Christina Predella discovered Oakholm Farm, a centuries-old working blueberry, raspberry, and pick-your-own Christmas tree farm in Brookfield, Massachusetts.

68 Winter 2019

BRIDE&GROOM

Owned and operated by the Jeppson’s, a prominent local family, for more than 90 years, the farm had seen better days when Babe and Christina stumbled upon it. But through the disrepair, this young couple saw its potential, felt its positive energy, and with laser-like focus, they had a crystal clear vision for what their lives could be like, living there and hosting weddings and special events on a newly renovated Oakholm Farm. You see, this love story is about a place. A romantic spot full of authenticity, natural beauty, and charm. It’s a place that can be a part of your love story, too! Oakholm Farm is considered by many to be the gem of Brookfield, a rural community located just six miles from Sturbridge, Massachusetts. The farm is situated on 115 acres of picture-perfect land with 500 square feet of beautiful lake frontage on Lake Quaboag, where bald eagles are often spotted. The proprietors have managed to use the historic elements of the farm to present classic vignettes and features in a stylish and timely way, which makes for jaw-dropping photo opportunities all over the property. In a nod to the life the farm once knew, there are lots of Jeppson family touches, paying homage to the previous owners and the happy lives they lived here. “The farm does all the work. I don’t ever have to sell it,” said Christina Predella, coowner and events coordinator. “We’ve been given this beautiful centuries-old canvas that reminds me of a historic European farm. Our mission is to take this land and its structures, and most importantly, keep it as a place of love respect, fun, celebration, peace, and relaxation. It’s a place for nourishment of the soul and a place where families can come together to create lifelong memories.” Christina was previously a teacher, and in recent years, had become a successful wedding coordinator for another local farm. Her husband owns his own landscaping company, and his talents are apparent across the property. Together with continued on page 70

their families, the Predellas have created a truly unique experience here. First-time visitors to Oakholm Farm usually gather at the Big House, as it is called. This is not like any farmhouse you’ve seen before; it’s an immaculate and stately sixbedroom slate-roofed manse, tastefully renovated inside and covered in lovely ivy outside and surrounded by perennial gardens. It’s available to brides and grooms for their wedding weekend, and it comes complete with a courtyard, elegantly decorated rooms, and grand entertainment spaces, perfect for getting ready for the ceremony or continuing the celebration after the reception. A short stroll from the Big House takes you by the lake, where you’ll find a guest cottage with a pool. This spot is just right for showers and smaller events, and it also serves as a bridal party meet-up spot or the perfect place for the groom and his groomsmen to get ready for the big day. It’s a lovely open-concept cottage with a living room, bathroom, kitchen, and relaxing porch. Just behind the cottage is the hayfield where the magic happens. This is where the 50-x-90-foot tent goes, which seats up to 200 guests comfortably. There is also the option of renting an alternative tent that allows for up to 300 guests with a dance floor and bar. The Predellas recommend preferred vendors from a list of tried-and-true local caterers, bakers, and more, and some couples have even had their reception catered by food trucks. Did we mention that Oakholm Farm also serves as a brewery? In the near future, it will be open to the public in one of the antique barns on the property, but currently, brides and grooms can have a brew truck pull up outside the tent at their reception. They are currently brewing 15 recipes of beer and ale on the premises, and couples can select 12 varieties to have on tap at their reception. It’s truly an amazing and delicious option, uncommon to most wedding venues. With an eye for details, an appreciation for history, and a finger on the pulse of today’s trends, the owners of this unique 70 Winter 2019

Chrissie Sue, LLC by Diana Whelan

f you just got engaged and you’re nervous about trying to navigate the tricky world of wedding planning, consider this: Maybe you don’t have to. Chrissie Sue of Events by Chrissie Sue, LLC can help you with everything from theme conceptualization, colors, and centerpieces to coordinating all aspects of your wedding with vendors as a day-of director. Whatever your needs, Chrissie Sue has more than a decade of experience and a true passion for what she does. Here’s the scoop on her business:

BRIDE&GROOM

Tell me a bit about the history behind Events By Chrissie Sue, LLC.

q:

a:

theme conceptualization and working as a day-of director. With this package, I initially work with clients on their overall concept and event theme, and I am their point person on the day of their wedding. I put together a portfolio with events for the day including time lines and checklists, acting as liaison between vendors so that the couple can enjoy themselves, knowing that things are being taken care of. My goal is to reduce stress, executing everything according to my clients’ vision. The third package is the Day of Wedding and Event Direction, which is perfect if clients have done all the planning themselves but need a professional to organize and execute all their hard work.

“I develop fabulous relationships with each of my clients, while creating and executing lifelong unforgettable experiences and getting to bring their visions to life.”

q: What makes your company stand out among other eventplanning companies?

a:

The biggest difference is that you’re working with me, Chrissie Sue! I’m uniquely passionate in all aspects of my job.

I began my career in the events and hospitality industry 14 years ago and spent the last seven and a half years working for Colwen Hotels, most recently as the Director of Catering for the Renaissance Boston Patriot Place Hotel and the Hilton Garden Inn at Patriot Place in Foxborough, MA. I loved my tenure there, but I’ve recently realized that I want a different work/ life balance. After being encouraged by so many, I decided to branch out on my own to expand my portfolio. I’m now able to continue doing what I love while maintaining the flexibility I was searching for.

q: What kinds of services do you offer brides and grooms? a: I’ve developed relationships with many reputable ven-

dors, including DJs, photographers, florists, and cake bakers, in all tiers and types, and I make sure to match each client up with the appropriate vendor based on vision and style. I work with people I know and trust, understanding that there’s a different style for every customer. I also provide guidance on wedding etiquette, overall budget, and scouting of venues.

q: Describe the packages you offer. a: There’s the Full Wedding and Event Planning Service,

which is intended for clients who need assistance with the entire planning process from start to finish. My most common service is Partial Wedding & Event Planning, which includes

Besides having extensive industry experience, I execute timely planning while maintaining budgets and deadlines, negotiate with vendors while providing assurance that even the smallest details are on point with each client’s theme and concept, and advise on decisions that bring the greatest impact to the event. If you’re my client, I save you time, reduce your stress, and give you an enjoyable planning experience. Working for Colwen Hotels, I’ve personally received many accolades such as: Best of Weddings 2014 through 2018; induction into the Hall of Fame by www.theknot.com; Couples Choice for 2016 and 2018 by www. weddingwire.com; and named the 2017 Marriott International Catering Sales Excellence Team of the Year for America’s East. These prestigious awards are customerdriven and require vendor qualification to even be selected.

q: What’s the benefit of an event-planning company?

a:

Clients often have multiple people contributing themes, opinions, budget, etc., and an event-planning company can assist in navigating the wedding journey and figuring out what’s most suitable for each individual client. We help determine the overall budget, concept, and theme, making sure clients know how much money they want to spend vs. what they can afford, how many guests they want to invite vs. how many they should—things like that.

BKB & Co.

q: What’s the best thing about your job? a: Being able to express my very best

self. I develop fabulous relationships with each of my clients, while creating and executing lifelong unforgettable experiences and getting to bring their visions to life.

Ten Surprising Ideas to Make Your Wedding Bloom by Emily Marcus

N

o matter the season, flowers are a quintessential component to every wedding. They add fresh fragrances and splashes of color in an organic and elegant fashion. Bridal bouquets, boutonnieres, table arrangements, and flower girls have long been part of wedding traditions. But as individualization becomes more of a focus over tradition, couples are creatively incorporating flowers in new and exciting ways. Consider these fresh ideas:

BRIDE&GROOM

1. Alter Your Altar Benjamin Newbold, creative director of Floral & Events for Winston Flowers describes the trend of infinity altars: “They offer a unique shape, certain to capture the attention of guests as they arrive to your ceremony. As the focal point, they create a special setting where wedding vows can be exchanged between a bride and groom. The freestanding piece is typically installed outdoors, with shades of green and white proving popular in the past. This year, however, we expect to see much more color incorporated into these lush designs. An added bonus to featuring this piece at your ceremony is that it becomes an Instagram-worthy photo op during your cocktail hour!”

mollyannesphotos.com

2. Lush Up Your Locks Wear a flower in your hair! According to Newbold, floral combs and barrettes are replacing the floral crown trend. “A delicate floral accessory offers a touch of glamour to any bride’s look, as well as a connection to her bouquet. If opting for a veil during the ceremony, a floral accent makes a beautiful accessory after the veil comes off. As more brides select updos for their big day, floral combs and barrettes are becoming even more popular. Of course, they also look beautiful when worn with hair down.”

mark-davidson.com

3. Sip Your Stems Add a floral touch to your signature cocktail. Ian Swindlehurst, beverage manager of Explorateur, notes, “Two things that jump to the front of my mind when I think about weddings are liquor and flowers, bouquets of color and wonderful scents spread throughout the wedding venue. Can you really have a great wedding without these things? Why wouldn’t a couple want to fuse these elements and really tie the whole event together?” Swindlehurst advises, “Flowers that are in season for the winter are roses and violets. These flowers are visually beautiful, pleasantly aromatic, and perfect for weddings, as well as being perfectly suited for cocktails. One of my alltime favorite cocktails incorporates a floral touch by using a violet-based liqueur. The Aviation, an awesome gin drink that is great all year round, is made of gin, Luxardo Maraschino cherry liqueur, lemon juice, and Crème de violette. The violet liqueur adds a stunning light blue/purple hue to the drink as well as the violet’s delicate aromatics and flavor. No wedding guest could refuse.”

Big Night Entertainment Group

4. Look up Add a little magic with whimsical woodland ceiling treatments. Newbold illuminates: “Cascading greenery intricately woven throughout the ceiling of a tent looks lush in the light and dramatic at night. The whimsical addition of hanging lanterns offers a dreamy glow reminiscent of dining under the stars while cradled under a canopy of trees.”

5. Go Organic Trade the cookie-cutter table arrangements for a natural look. Newbold notes, “We’re seeing less of symmetrical centerpieces and more of linear designs that feature organic vines, berries, and interesting asymmetrical shapes. Things like branches, unique textures, found objects, and ceiling accents are replacing traditional round centerpieces of the past. The final outcome is a design that feels grown in place rather than installed.”

6. Devour Your Flowers “Edible flowers add a touch of floral flavor, color, and elegance in a dish,” explains Steve Zimei, executive chef at CHOPPS American Bar and Grill. “I am a big fan of chive blossoms. I like to add them to roasted asparagus and serve in accompaniment with a roasted beef tenderloin and sour cream whipped potatoes. Flowers can truly transform a good dish into a great dish!”

7. Glam Up Your Garnishes Sometimes the little visual touch makes a dish complete. Explains Jami Barry, managing director of Vinwood Caterers, “We use lots of floral garnishes for our hors d’oeuvre trays from local farms—Wainer Family Farm Greenhouses/Jansal Valley. I particularly like their mix of rose, pansy, marigold, nasturtium, daisy, and firestix petals, as well as borage blossoms. We often garnish some of our salads throughout the season with nasturtium, marigolds, and a fabulous variety of blossoms that we purchase from Sid Wainer.”

8. Chill Out Freeze edible flowers and petals into ice cubes for a romantic touch. Barry also suggests, “We served frozen Prosecco (or cocktail) Pops with flowers/fruit frozen inside this summer—that is definitely an on trend summer wedding treat!”

9. Ditch the Blah Bouquet Your bridal bouquet should be as unique as you! “Brides are opting to carry bouquets that are unique in both style and flower choices,” Newbold says. “We can expect to see more texture than ever before with seasonal elements that mimic the untamed beauty of the natural world. The design style is loose and organic, as if the textural elements were gathered right out of the garden.”

10. Don’t Knock It Till You Dry It “At first thought, dried flowers are not the most romantic addition to a wedding,” Newbold admits. “However, when flowers dry, their shape and structure is transformed. These structural qualities can be unique and beautiful, especially during the autumn months when textures are more abundant. A perfect example is pampas grass, a feathery plant that makes for a showy display when gathered into a bunch. This is a lovely option for a rustic setting, or it can be dressed up to feel glamorous when paired with the right vase.”

The saying “it’s all in the details” is truer at a wedding than it is in any other setting. Details are what separate the memorable weddings from the rest. Flowers are just one way to tweak or completely break from tradition, delighting and surprising your guests. From flavors to fragrances to freshness, nature’s little beauties have serious potential for wow factor.

The

Mane Attraction Hair Hacks for the Big Day by Stacey Marcus Now that you’ve posted your engagement pics on Instagam and sent out your Save the Date reminders, you’re probably making a master list of all the things you need to do before you say “I do.” You have no time to micro-manage a satellite list of how to guarantee that your hair will look amazing on your wedding day, so we turned to some experts to do the work. Answer Some Questions “I’ve seen many brides come and go, and the happiest tend to sip from the carefree bubbly. This is an exciting chapter and milestone in your life, and the preparations can be overwhelming. Your hair, like your dress, should feel tailored just for you—the individual,” says John William of Fringe Salon in Salem. He gave us a quick Q and A on the subject:

Photo courtesy of Moroccan Gold Series

How do you normally wear your hair? If you’ve got naturally curly locks and rock them daily, chances are a smoother style might feel alien to you. You want to feel like your best version of you, not someone else. Do you love having your hair down? An updo, no matter how pretty, may leave you feeling a little bare or reminiscing about those awkward teen prom nights. Will you be using a hair accessory? Keep color, texture, and scale in mind, and how that accessory will enhance your overall look. Jewels and metals can reflect light, which is a nice touch for evening. If you want to incorporate a hair accessory, such as a veil or barrette, please bring it 90 Winter 2019

with for your trial run. Your stylist will play around with the placement and scale of your accessory. What can you do the day of your wedding? On the day of, slightly lived-in hair works best for styling. This means your hair should not be squeaky clean or excessively oily; day-old hair is nice and moldable. Wearing a button-down shirt will ensure your hair doesn’t get mussed in the middle of undressing and getting dressed again. Eat Your Veggies! “The best way to get that goddess-like, hydrated hair is by eating nature’s full spectrum of colors. Fresh fruits and veggies have their own “color-coding” system, with different compounds cre-

ating different hues in our foods. Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple foods contain unique plant pigments that are rich in antioxidants and free radicals that promote healthy skin and hair,” notes Neka Pasquale, LAc, MS, and founder of Urban Remedy. Match the Tress to the Dress “For strapless gowns, you have the best of both worlds with the options to wear your hair up or down. The deciding factor here is often the type of jewelry you plan to wear. If you choose a large statement necklace, wearing your hair up and away from the face is a great choice. Your aesthetic will look polished rather than too busy. If you choose to wear minimal neck jewelry or opt for say, a statement bracelet instead, you can definitely wear your hair loose and down. Since your hairstyle will become your main focal point, opt for a wavy hairstyle where the curls begin at the midshaft and become more lush towards the ends,” says Fernando Salas, hairstylist and creator of White Sands Haircare.

Track the temperature “If the wedding is taking place inside or during cooler climates, it’s safe to go for those gorgeous cascading curls on your wedding day,” said Jonathan Balva of Moroccan Gold Series. “However, if you’re getting married in a hot, humid climate I would suggest going for an updo to avoid frizz. Both looks can be achieved with the curl and style creams available in our collection.” Go with the Flow Amy Brackman, owner of LuxeBeautiQue Salon & Spa of Swampscott, shares a few tips: • Your current stylist may not be the best one to give you your day-of tresses. Shop around. • Set up trials at least six months in advance. If you are getting married at an extremely popular time of year, do it one year in advance. • Put together a bag of products for your wedding day: pins and dry shampoo and some styling paste. Jumping up and down on the dance floor and being swept off your feet by the groom can do a job on your coiffure. • Casual is an option. Let your hair down or pull it up in a ponytail. Some clients love being natural and going with the flow, which leaves them free to have a great time.
