Who needs a wedding hashtag? You do. Although your professional wedding photos are worth waiting for, in today’s social-media obsessed world, “there’s an immediate need for visual images,” says photographer Allison Niles. “It takes time to perfect, edit, and export images … and a wedding gallery turnaround can take between four and eight weeks. Because couples like to see pictures right away, hashtags have become really big!” Hashtag photos are instantly uploaded and shared to public galleries on Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook. “There are apps and add-ons for phones and iPods,” adds Niles,” that add filters and special effects.” Other than posting, couples’ sneak peeks before proofs are ready, Niles “typically doesn’t contribute” to hashtag feeds. She also recommends couples integrate “unplugged moments into their wedding,” in order to prevent guests from snapping away during quiet moments. For her clients Kerin Soares and Edi Naço, that meant enforcing a “no photo” policy during the ceremony portion of their October 2016 Chocksett Inn wedding. “I didn’t allow cell phones,” Kerin recalls, “so as not to disturb the integrity of professional shots.” Come reception time, guests were encouraged to take and upload photos to Kerin and Edi’s #NacoConKSo hashtag (pronounced na-cho con queso), explains Kerin. “My maiden name is Soares and people have

called me K-So. My husband’s last name is pronounced nacho. Conceived by Kerin’s sister, their clever NaçoConKSo hashtag fit perfectly. Selecting a hashtag takes persistence and ingenuity. Begin by plugging in your names, and wedding date on a few free webbased hashtag generators. If you find a winning combo, you’re #done! If not, brainstorm. Incorporate rhymes, puns, numbers, places, or key words until you’ve achieved success. Then, perform a test search to make sure your chosen hashtag doesn’t pop up on other Instagram feeds. Next: share and conquer! Include your hashtag on your save-the-date cards, invitations, and website; reveal it at your bridal shower; spread the word on social media. “Encourage the hashtag, have your DJ announce it in a fun way, spell it for people, and tell them to use it,” says photographer Aram Orchanian, co-owner of Kataram Studios with his wife Kateryna. continued on page 14

They use hashtags when uploading wedding photos, “to make it easier for our clients.” He suggests couples use reminders in order to help their guests memorize it. “Have cards set on the place settings, use signs all around,” and prominently display “a large photo of your hashtag.” “Hashtag sharing is great for vendors, newlyweds, and their guests,” says Chris Sullivan, owner of the New England–based 77 VW Bus Photo Booth Rental—a “cool, fun, entertaining photo-booth experience” that operates out of a 1977 vintage VW van. Sullivan recently worked two weddings where the bride and groom incorporated hashtags into customized VW-themed photos and filmstrip graphics. The photo bus, which was parked on the grounds of the Gardens at Elm Bank during Allison Chou’s May 2017 wedding to Kory Ng, “was a hit!” enthuses Allison. The VW filmstrip photos were among many shared to #chouwedng, a clever mash-up of the couples’ last names with the word “wed” in between. “More than half of our 185 guests used social media,” Allison recalls. “Our day-of coordinator also wrote our hashtag on the chalkboard sign outside the photo bus, on signage throughout the venue, on our wedding website, invitations, save-the-date cards, and programs.” Guests at the September 2017 wedding of Deborah Bang and Sean Lee at Castle Hill Inn in Newport, RI, also “happily took photos … and displayed Instagrams” of the VW photo bus,” says Deborah. Their #SeAnDeborah hashtag, which she admits didn’t come easily at first, “was unique to us … catchy and easy to remember.” Deborah also made a keepsake wooden block hashtag sign, which she placed prominently at the guestbook signing table. “Out of 100-plus tagged photos taken, you’ll end up with 10 percent good ones,” says Allison Niles. And some, as you might guess, will be not so good. Thankfully, there are features and apps that can edit or delete those embarrassing candids and selfies from your online album. With more than 800 million Instagram users, it’s clear that hashtags are here to stay. Carissa and Ryan Kittredge July 1, 2017 Lord Thompson Manor, Thompson, Connecticut Carissa and Ryan Kittredge were wed July 1, 2017, at Lord Thompson Manor in Thompson, Connecticut. One day in 2011, their friends came up with the idea to connect the two of them and called Carissa and Ryan to see if they were interested in coming out for a group dinner. The dinner arrangements almost got called off because of a hurricane, but they braved the weather and made it out to the restaurant. They were all happy that they did because Carissa and Ryan had a great connection from the start.

Three years later, Ryan proposed while the couple was on a vacation in Yellowstone National Park, at the summit of Mount Washburn. Ryan had been carrying the ring around with him the entire trip until he found the right moment. They were with some friends, and when Ryan took Carissa over to the spot where he proposed, their friends trailed behind to take a video. Conveniently, their friends had glasses and champagne in their backpack so they wasted no time in starting the celebrations. Carissa and Ryan are grateful that they have the video of the proposal to look back on and watch. They took their time setting the date, wanting to enjoy just being engaged. Once they found the perfect venue, they took about a year to plan, which seemed like plenty of time to get everything done for the wedding. Carissa really wanted to enjoy the planning process, so she told herself right from the start that she wouldn’t let herself get too stressed out. She took her time in the beginning and left the smaller details for later. She cautions brides-to-be not to believe those people who tell you that there will be a “lull” near the end of the planning process. She says that there were a lot of things she could have been working on throughout the year (e.g., bridesmaid gifts, vows, jewelry, etc.), but she put them off until the last minute. As a consequence, she had a lot of late nights as the big day got closer. Carissa still enjoyed the process, which she feels is super important. They both had fun creating the event and seeing it come to life on the day. In the end, it was everything they could have hoped for. When Carissa and Ryan got engaged, they knew right away that they wanted a venue where they could stay and host a wedding weekend. Ryan has a lot of family who live in the South, so they knew they’d have plenty of guests traveling up for the event. They wanted to be able to spend as much time with them as they could. The Lord Thompson Manor was

exactly the type of venue they were looking for, considering the wedding weekend is one of their specialties. The wedding party had the entire venue from Friday to Sunday for the rehearsal dinner, ceremony, reception, and brunch the morning after. Carissa wanted their wedding to have a glamorous/romantic feel, so she chose blush pink, gold, rose gold, and a light taupe for the color palette. The bridesmaids wore gold, taupe, and blush pink. The men wore French blue instead of traditional black. For favors, there were pashminas for the ladies (which also added to the décor), and Jackie at the manor did a fabulous job with the floral arrangements, inspired by some photos Carissa had shared with her on Pinterest. Ted, another

member of the team at the manor, decorated the arbor exactly like a photo Carissa had provided, and it came out beautifully. The manor team also did all of the decorating with props that they had on hand: sequined pillows, lots of candles, and different eclectic pieces on each table. It all came together nicely and Carissa believes that the members of the manor team are amazingly talented when it comes to orchestrating a wedding. For Carissa and Ryan, the food was a strong selling point in favor of the Lord Thompson Manor. They take great pride in the quality and quantity, so no one was left hungry. In fact, there were so many appetizers that many people were full by the time they got their entrée—sirloin and scallops over risotto accompanied by mashed potatoes.

For dessert, there were cupcakes by My Sweet Escape Treats in exotic flavors such as salted caramel, red velvet, cookie dough, lemon raspberry, dark chocolate merlot, and blue moon (an orange flavored cupcake with vanilla frosting and a Blue Moon shot on top). Chef Mike at the manor made a small cutting cake, and he was responsible for the amazing food they enjoyed all weekend long. The incredibly talented Silver Arrow Band provided the music. Carissa believes that there’s something about a live band at a wedding that adds a magnetic energy to the festivities. The bride’s dress was designed by Lillian West and her shoes were by Badgley Mischka. The bridesmaids purchased their dresses at David’s Bridal, and Ryan and his groomsmen wore suits by Mantoni.

One of the most memorable moments of the day was after the ceremony. Carissa and Ryan went up to the balcony to give a toast and looked down to see everyone who had come out to celebrate with them. The band was also a crucial element in the event’s success, keeping everyone on the dance floor throughout the evening with their eclectic and upbeat mix of songs. There was also an after-party outside where everyone could hang out in cabanas—the perfect way to wind down the evening. What advice would Carissa and Ryan give to couples about to tie the knot? As with any big event, planning is essential, but before any of that gets done, think about and identify the most important aspects for you both, so that you know where to dedicate the resources to make the day what you want it to be. Find the right people to help you organize and coordinate the wedding on the day, so you don’t have to worry, and you can fully enjoy every precious moment of your special day.

A Vow Renewal

Kim & Shiloh Chauvin April 15, 2017 Newport Beach House Newport, RI

When Kim Lyn Chauvin and Shiloh Aaron Chauvin were married on July 21, 2012, they had absolutely no budget and no one to help out. Five years later, they made up for that when Kim surprised Shiloh with a vow renewal ceremony. Kim says, “Our vow renewal was our dream come true.” The couple planned their wedding in three months. “Crazy, but it can be done,” assures Kim. The vow renewal was planned over the course of five months. Kim kept going back and forth trying to figure out if she should wait or not.

They met in sixth grade at a bowling alley Shiloh likes to tell the story, but Kim doesn’t seem to remember this momentous occasion. Apparently, Shiloh has liked her since that first day. He kept trying to introduce himself, but she wouldn’t pay him any mind. The two of them didn’t get together until they were in their twenties.

“I really loved writing my vows for Shiloh and renewing them was amazing.” In 2012, Shiloh planned a trip to New Hampshire for Valentine’s Day. They were celebrating it two weeks late, and he rented a cabin in the mountains. They drove up in the middle of a serious snowstorm; Kim was scared out of her mind, but Shiloh kept her calm. Originally, Shiloh had planned on taking a hike to a waterfall because the weather had been great up until that weekend. Needless to say, the hike didn’t happen, so the couple lit a fire and settled in for a cozy evening in the cabin. While they were slow dancing (they slow dance a lot) Shiloh began by telling Kim how much he loved her, and the next thing she knew he was down on one knee. They snuggled by the fire the entire night. The next morning, they woke up to watch the sunrise and there were deer in the yard. It was a beautiful moment they will always remember. Being a wedding photographer, Kim has worked with Longwood on many beautiful weddings. Since their wedding had been so low-key, she was inspired to have a ceremony to renew their vows. Shiloh had no idea what Kim was planning and got quite a surprise on April 15, 2017. continued on page 24

“We spend lots of time by the ocean. It’s our happy place,” says Kim, so the Newport Beach House was the perfect venue. Kim wanted everything to feel and look cool, clean, and romantic. She praises the Longwood vendor team and says they did an amazing job. The couple’s four sons stood up for them as the wedding party, and they even recited some scripture from the Bible. Kim says, “I really loved writing my vows for Shiloh and renewing them was amazing. Especially with our sons present.” Kim says, in hindsight, she would definitely have done a “first look.” It’s not an easy decision, to put superstition and tradition behind you, but Kim says she would have hired the BEST photographer and trusted in his or her vision.

Stephanie & David Ciaschini October 8, 2016 Our Lady of Czestochowa Parish, Worcester, MA Stephanie and David Ciaschini tied the knot October 8, 2016, at Our Lady of Czestochowa Parish in Worcester. The ceremony was followed by a picturesque reception at the Sterling National Country Club. Stephanie and David’s first date was unique, but in traditional New England–style, they arranged to meet on Thanksgiving night. The two met through a dating site, and although Stephanie had her doubts about finding “the one” online, she decided to give it a shot since many of her friends and family members had met great people that way. Because everything is closed on Thanksgiving except bars and fast-food joints, Stephanie had to think outside of the box and decided they should meet at Dunkin’ Donuts.

David ordered a coffee and Stephanie ordered a vanilla chai tea. The meeting was on November 24, 2011, and they have been thankful ever since. David proposed to Stephanie on June 25, 2015, in Wells, Maine. Luckily they share a love of coffee and the beach. They were vacationing for the week and celebrating the end of another school year working in the public schools with children on the autism spectrum. That weekend, Stephanie’s father, and her sister and brother-in-law with their ninemonth-old daughter, came up to celebrate Father’s Day. Everyone knew what Dave was planning including Stephanie’s co- workers who managed not to spill the beans at the year-end get together. Stephanie even missed the hint when her sister asked her when she thought Dave would propose. David initially wanted to go to Perkins Cove for a walk, but the rain put off that adventure. They decided on a shopping trip in Portsmouth instead. David was so anxious he just got down on one knee and proposed at his family’s beach house. The rain finally stopped and, of course, they celebrated with a trip to Dunkin’ Donuts and a walk through Ogunquit. The two joked that if the proposal had happened at Perkins Cove, the ring might have gotten lost in the rocks because David’s hands were shaking from nervousness. Taking a little more than twelve months to plan their wedding, Stephanie and David enjoyed every second of the process. Touring all the possible venues and seeing all the great choices Central Mass has to offer got them excited about creating the wedding of their dreams. An October wedding in a church were two priorities for the couple. Stephanie’s faith is very important to her and she had always dreamed about getting married in the church she was brought up in. After looking around at countless options, they decided on Sterling National Country Club because of the breathtaking views and amazing services. “The events coordina-

tor was absolutely wonderful to work with. She is genuine and extremely passionate about her job.” With no set theme, they decided to play off the season. Beautiful blooms of sunflowers and calla lilies dressed the tables and adorned the wedding party’s arrangements. For centerpieces, half of the tables had sunflowers in mason jars and the

other half had pumpkins with candles inside. The wedding favors were magnetic frame strips for their guests to take home their photo booth pictures and, of course, two-ounce Dunkin’ Donuts bricks of coffee. Incorporating Stephanie’s heritage as second-generation Polish-American was also a priority, so they honored that by having an Eastern European blessing of marriage, which includes wine, bread, salt, and a silver coin. Each item represents a wish or blessing of the marriage. Religion and heritage aside, Stephanie had one more priority: to make sure they did the chicken dance at the reception. The day went by quickly, but the most memorable part for Stephanie and David was the first glance they had at each other as Stephanie’s father walked her down the aisle. Some advice the couple would like to share is that if something small goes wrong, don’t sweat it; mostly likely no one noticed. Don’t worry about anyone else but the two of you. Enjoy just being the new Mr. and Mrs., and give a groomsmen or bridesmaid the duty of keeping problems and negativity away from you.

You spent hours in fitting rooms with extended family and friends, scoured magazines and websites, laughed, cried, and eventually triumphedâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;you said yes to the dress. Ball-gown, A-line, trumpet, or, sheath, the wedding dress is far more than an article of clothing. Yet with these delicate, expensive, gorgeous, white works of art comes a lot of pressure: How can I keep it looking perfect during my entire big day? Whatever wedding dress woes are keeping you up at night, we have the solution. 38 Winter 2018

Strapless Dress Slipping Down Don’t just go to a tailor, prepare for the tailor. Tiffany Hogan, wedding expert and private event sales manager at VIP Country Club in New Rochelle, NY, advises, “You should purchase all of the undergarments that you will be wearing on your wedding day prior to the final fitting. Move around in the dress while at the fitting—sit down a few times, lean in for a hug, lift your arms, dance! Making these movements prior will target any flaws before the big day.” Lindsey Bennett, lead wedding dress designer for Azazie, suggests features like corset backs and silicon elastic to keep strapless dresses in place and fitting perfectly up until go time and beyond.

But if rain is the only forecast you are prepared for, you may want to think again. Heat and wind are two wedding dress threats you may need to combat. To avoid wrinkles, Bennett says, “With the improved technology, polyester dresses will keep longer and make steaming easier. Also, every single bride should have a hand-held steamer in her purse.” As for avoiding sweat, or at least hiding it, she suggests wearing lightweight synthetics like poly-chiffon over heavy woven fabrics, satin, and silk.

Stains We all know white fabric is difficult to keep stain-free. Stains happen, but they don’t need to ruin your dress or your day. According to Hogan, “It is best to remember not to frantically rub at the stain, as continued on page 40 www.bridegroommag.com

wedding dresses have many layers that are often delicate. Stay calm and try separating the layers so that you only have the stained portion, and then use a cloth or Q-tip to dab with a mixture of soap and water. For oil-based stains, dish soap works even better at cutting the grease. If you have a stain stick, this would also work if the stain is not very large.”

“The most important wedding dress disaster to avoid is letting your dress control your day.” Getting Stuck in the Restroom Wedding dresses can be long, heavy, and hard to take off and on. If you’re worried about spending most of your wedding day in the restroom, check out products like Bridal Buddy that help gather and lift your dress without extra assistance. Though, as Hogan notes, “Most wedding venues have a bridal suite. This particular endeavor is easiest with increased numbers, so ask for at least one member of the bridal party to assist; two is even better. A bridal suite will provide privacy and a cleaner atmosphere in case the dress accidentally hits the floor. If a public restroom is the only option, make sure that the dress is either completely off, or at the very least, that all fabric is lifted out of the way, including the veil.” The most important wedding dress disaster to avoid is letting your dress control your day. Lastly, it will be easiest to relax if you feel prepared. Make sure to pack an emergency tool kit. For the dress, Bennett and Hogan recommend Tide-to-go, fashion tape, safety pins, sewing kit, Band-Aids, Q-tips, oil absorbing sheets, a lint roller, scissors, a backup wrap, and a change of clothes. Being prepared will let you focus on what your wedding day is really about—the people who are celebrating with you—so relax and enjoy.

Under the Sea Chefs Dish about Scrumptious Seafood Selections

Couples who want their menu to reflect their passion for seafood have by Stacey Marcus

plenty of options in New England. Surrounded by coastal waters brimming with under-the-sea delicacies, New England offers a unique opportunity to create a menu brimming with local and fresh seafood. We fished around for some creative advice from area chefs. Sean Dutson, chef at Revere Hotel Boston Common, believes couples should embrace seafood on their wedding menu, especially in New England where fresh seafood is abundant. “Seafood selections add to the elegance of the party and give those guests focusing on healthy eating a great choice,” says Chef Dutson. Boston Harbor Hotel chef Daniel Bruce always recommends that couples select fish as a great alternative to beef as the entrée for wedding guests. Born and raised in New England, Chef Bruce loves being located on the water and using fresh local ingredients whenever possible. Charlie Foster, chef at Woods Hill Table, likes to get creative. Swordfish Belly Pastrami is a favorite and is currently paired with, trout roe, lemon crème fraîche, radishes, and crispy rye on top of a bed of baby lettuce. Made from rotating sustainable ingredients to celebrate each season sourced from the restaurant’s own farm—The Farm at Woods Hill—and other small-scale purveyors, the various textures and flavors create an unforgettable dish. Kimpton Marlowe Hotel’s executive chef, David Bazirgan, notes that one of the more popular items on wedding cocktail menus right now is locally sourced oysters on the half shell passed with artisanal accompaniments made onsite at Bambara Kitchen and Bar. “I think the oysters are playful and an unexpected appetizer for couples and their wedding guests,” he says. continued on page 44

Candlelit Weddings: Set Your Wedding Aglow by Cindy Papish Gerber

“Candle lighting is a primal element; we are all drawn it,” says event designer Andrew Rubenoff. “The soft light produced by a flickering candle is not only pretty and romantic, but it’s the most flattering of all light sources. With more than thirty-three years of lighting experience, Rubenoff, “approaches wedding design in the same way” as he does a theatrical production. He ranks candles on the top of his list for inspiring creativity.

Unlike cut flowers, candles and their containers can be reused and repurposed, and they don’t come with a hefty price tag. “Whether it’s a twenty-five-cent votive or twenty-five-dollar candle, it generates the same brightness,” Rubenoff maintains. “The only difference is a torch or bucket candle, which, due to its size, has a bigger, brighter flame and is ideal for outdoor/patio weddings.”

Local and state-mandated fire safety ordinances pertaining to candle sizes, designs, assemblies, placement, and usages can be found online, but if you have any questions, please ask your wedding coordinator or banquet manager for exact guidelines. Year-round, indoors and out, there are two factors that affect candles: heat and wind. “Candles put out a lot of heat,” cautions Rubenoff. Wind, blowing through A/C vents, as well as unpredictable New England wind gusts can fan flames. All candles should be surrounded by fireproof hurricane shades or straight cylinders and set apart from flammable items. “Here in Rhode Island, we can only use candles in glass containers; there cannot be an open flame,” says Erica Trombetti, owner and lead event specialist of Infinite Events. A candle enthusiast, Trombetti, “loves using them everywhere! On the tables, mantels, your escort table, cake table, gift table, etc. Candlelight sets the tone for a romantic ambiance, and it can be used for any type of event—for daytime weddings as well.” To achieve that wow effect, she likes to combine continued on page 48 www.bridegroommag.com

different sizes, shapes, and colors that complement the décor. “I would consult your florist for the best option for your specific event and design … as there are many variables that go into it.” “Erica took the dream we had and made it come to life,” shares Rachel Orabone Boulware about her October 2015 wedding held at [Carolyn’s] Sakonnet Vineyard in Little Compton, RI. During the church ceremony, Erica and her groom Jason lit a unity candle. “It was a special, symbolic way for us to show that we two had become one,” she recalls “to live a shared life together forever. At our reception, all our tables were brimming with traditional candles—a mix of small clear glass and mercury glass votives were sprinkled around the floral centerpieces. The soft light radiating from the candles just oozed romance and elegance, providing an ethereal ambience and the perfect glow for pictures.”

If using real candles is prohibited at your venue, LEDs are an excellent alternative. Placed up and down the aisle floor, set on banisters, altars or columns, LEDs can safely and beautifully illuminate your wedding. “A LED will not light on fire if one gets knocked over accidently,” Trombetti points out. Rubenoff is also impressed with the recent selection of “vastly improved, competitively priced LEDs that look very convincing.” Since some varieties, “may appear too amber and not as bright,” he suggests buying a few for a test run before ordering dozens. Both Trombetti and Rubenoff are not in favor of using scented candles in centerpieces, where the overbearing odor may mix with food smells. Trombetti also points out that some guests might be allergic to the smell. Instead, reserve those spice, floral, fruit, or ocean-scented candles for entry foyers, powder rooms, or as wedding favors. 48 Winter 2018

“There’s a formal quality to candlelight and it can really add warmth to an overcast, rainy, gloomy day or dark-paneled room,” says Rubenoff. For optimal effect, he makes certain that dining staff are instructed, “to go around and light candles at weddings as the sun sets …. at the last minute. Would you climb a mountain for your spouseâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;literally? Most of the time, happily ever after begins with some kind of adventure. To some, that could mean an exotic honeymoon to Bora Bora. To the clients of Jay and Vicki Philbrickâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, it could mean a mesmerizing post-wedding photo shoot atop the stunning Cathedral Ledge in North Conway, New Hampshire.

Jay and Vicki have been working together as portrait and wedding photographers at Philbrick Photography in New Hampshire for the past fifteen years, yet it wasn’t until 2008 that they decided to take their services to the next level (or higher). Jay, a former climbing guide, has admired Cathedral Ledge for years, and something told him it had more of a purpose than just looking pretty. “I’ve always had this idea of getting a couple on that one ledge,” Jay said. “I just thought, it’s such an improbable place to have a bride and groom standing.” He decided to suggest a day-after cliffside shoot to a couple he was currently working with—and to Jay’s delight, they were on board.

After several shoots on the ledge, the stunning photos started to get famous on the Internet. While the response is mostly positive, “some people immediately thought the photos were fake or edited in Photoshop,” Jay said. But actually, there’s no editing done to the photos; everything you see is what he sees through his lens. “No harnesses, no ropes, no anchors— nothing. It’s all hidden,” Jay said. Other immediate reactions to the photos are that it seems irresponsible or unsafe. Jay has an answer to that, too: “Statistically, we’re all at much more risk driving to and from the cliff than we are on [that cliff]. It’s really quite safe.”

So how does it all actually go down (or up)? Photo shoots start super early in the morning—or late at night depending on how you look at it. Between 2:30 and 3:00 am, Jay and his professional partner, mountain guide Marc Chauvin, begin setting up the ropes, anchors, and everything they need to make the photo shoot happen. Vicki, who takes behind-the-scenes photos during the shoot, comes by as well. “The goal is to have the couple securely anchored before sunrise,” Jay said. The team always goes for two different shots: one before sunrise and another after sunrise, both of which have completely different vibes. “We go the extra mile to get something unique for our couples,” he said. Once everything is set up and the bride and groom arrive, the two are lowered down in harnesses onto the ledge. While the groom can don his pants, shirt, and tie before being lowered, the bride is told to wear baggy clothes or something she can hide under her wedding dress. Once securely on the ledge, Marc will dangle down with the gown, veil, and any other accessories. Nothing like a wardrobe change hundreds of feet off the ground!

The bride transitions out of her harness and into a slimmer harness that can fit under her dress, and a small hole is made in the back of the dress to feed the rope through. The best kind of dress for this type of shoot? “Ones with a corset back—you can easily fit the rope through it,” Jay said. More often than not, Jay and Vicki are working with couples who aren’t professional climbers. But out of twenty photo shoots, they’ve never had anyone bail out. “We love that couples are always very excited to go through with it—it’s something they’ll never forget for the rest of their lives,” Jay said. asks the wedding couple what wine they enjoy drinking because he beleives that the essence of a wedding is to celebrate the couple. Just having tied the knot a couple of weeks ago, Rich is an expert on wine as well as weddings. He took a moment from his busy job at Woods Hill Table to uncork some thoughts about wine and weddings:

• We provide the food and wine, but the wedding is really all about the couple. Rich emphasizes that couples should serve their favorites vintages so that guests can learn what they like while celebrating their nuptials. • Classics ring true. When it comes to pairing food and wine, Rich is pretty old school, serving white wine with seafood and poultry and red wine with meat. He notes that a sommelier will know best what to serve with your specific wedding menu. Wine tastings are a great way to explore pairings. • “What grows together, goes together” is Rich’s mantra. Think of the major cuisine from an area like Italy—spicy Bolognese, chicken parmesan—and you can see how well a Chianti Classico works with these dishes.

Bruno Marini, sommelier and food and beverage director at CHOPPS American Bar & Grill and Boston Marriott Burlington has a few simple tips for couples to keep in mind while selecting wine for their wedding reception: • Go with something that you’re familiar with. While unique varietals might be tempting or seem like an exciting alternative, you want to offer something that is recognizable to your guests.

• Make sure you taste the wine before making your selections. Every vineyard yields a unique wine each season, so make sure that you taste the wine that will be poured on your big day. Plus, who doesn’t like a wine tasting? • Focus on the quality of the product. Don’t let price be the sole factor that that rules your decision. Ray Osborne, head sommelier and assistant general manager of Bistro du Midi notes, “For white wines, a white Burgundy is a good place to start. White Burgundy wines are often crisp enough to appeal to drinkers of Sauvignon Blanc and have enough Chardonnay flavoring to appeal to drinkers of domestic Chardonays. For red wines, Osborne says couples should consider choosing a California Pinot Noir. Many California Pinots can be reasonably rich, but what they don’t have is the pigmentation that’s going to stain everyone’s teeth—no purple smiles for the reception photos.” Rich shares a final word about wines at weddings noting that you should, “ Have fun. It’s your day. It’s time to open a Jeroboam or Imperial-size bottle and let the good times flow!

This pristine island is a favorite spot for A-listers and families to enjoy sun and fun in summertime, and it’s also an ideal spot to get hitched come winter. While some couples choose spring and fall to get married in Nantucket to avoid high season,

Rachel Dodson, wedding and events manager at the Nantucket Hotel & Resort notes that Nantucket is a hidden gem for a winter wedding. Claire Drexler agrees. Her family has been vacationing on Nantucket for as long as she can remember. Claire and her husband Kyle, whose father built one of the yacht clubs in Nantucket, now live in Kenya and originally thought they would have their wedding in Africa, but then realized that Nantucket was the perfect spot. “We didn’t want the typical Nantucket wedding and thought how cool it would be gather family and friends off-season in Nantucket.” recalls Drexler. continued on page 76

She was right. “People who have been going to the island for sixty years felt like they had seen it for the first time,” says Drexler. “It was so magical,” she recalls, noting that although they were prepared for the weather not to cooperate, the skies were blue and everyone enjoyed the island. “It was like our own personal Christmas stroll,” says Drexler whose wedding shimmered in metallics and the natural elements of the island such as birch and cranberries. One of her treasured memories is when the hotel manager at the Nantucket Hotel & Resort made grilled cheeses for the wedding party at midnight. Marybethe Sabeti agrees that Nantucket is brimming with magic. It’s where she and her husband Amdi escaped to on a whim back in 2013 before they were married. “Over the years it became our go-to getaway place where we discovered a little slice of heaven,” says Sabeti. When the couple was looking for a spot to tie the knot, Nantucket made the most sense. “I always wanted to get married at Christmas, and we wanted to share the beauty of Nantucket with family and friends.” “We got to see Nantucket in a whole new light,” says Sabeti, who added some merry touches to the wedding such as flowers on chestnuts and wedding cake that resembled presents.
