ello, and welcome to the second edition of The Birks listings programme! It’s been a busy old time since the last one and we’ve had some great successes with sell-out performances of the Royal Opera House and Bolshoi Ballet, as well as Lincoln, Les Mis and a few of our other Oscar retrospective showings. In this programme, we’ve got a TON of content of all different varieties! We’ve got alternative content in the form of the continuation of our ROH and NT Live seasons, as well as the commencement of our Glyndebourne, Globe Theatre and Met encore seasons. There’s fascinating one-off events, like Pompeii Live from the British Museum and the Munch 150 exhibition from the National Museum in Oslo. Closer to home, we have an independent Scottish film, ‘The Space Between’, with a Q&A session afterwards with writer/director Tim Barrow. We’re showing ‘I Know Where I’m Going’ to tie in with the 9th anniversary of the Aberfeldy Mod. There’s also a special screening of the documentary ‘Fire In The Night’, about the Piper Alpha rig disaster, ahead of the anniversary on 6th July - the archive footage should be all the more powerful on the big screen. On a lighter note, the Heartland Film Society are presenting a Studio Ghibli double-bill of ‘Grave Of The Fireflies’ and ‘My Neighbour Totoro’. Only £8.50 (£4.95 for HFS members) for both films, it should be a magical Sunday afternoon for both young and old fans of this most wonderful film studios. All this and some brilliant new releases including ‘Mud’, ‘Behind The Candelabra’ (Michael Douglas as Liberace - cannot wait!) and one I’ve been waiting for - ‘Man Of Steel’, the Zack Snyder-helmed reboot of the Superman franchise. There’s literally something for everyone in this programme and we look forward to seeing you through the doors at some point. Oh, and I forgot to mention - we’re licensed now! You can enjoy a selection from our wine list as you take in an opera or to accompany your meal in our mezzanine restaurant area. We’ll be expanding our offerings throughout the summer as we feature guest beers, wines and whiskies from all over. Slainte! Paul

Mud FRI 31 MAY - THU 6 JUNE In this follow-up to the muchacclaimed Take Shelter, director Nichols pays homage to great American novels and films such as Huckleberry Finn, Stand By Me and Badlands. The premise is straightforward: on an island there is a boat, and in that boat there lives a man called Mud (McConaughey), whose past is as murky as the vast Mississippi that swirls around him. When 14-year-old Ellis (Sheridan) and Neckbone (Lofland) venture across the river, the trio’s surprise encounter drags them all into a world of bounty hunters, unrequited love, and those strange, magical moments that transform boys into men. Littered with broken characters and casual violence, Nichols’ story plays out like a Johnny Cash song and reminds us that, no matter how just the cause, life is nothing more than a constant struggle upstream. Contains moderate violence and sex references.

A Late Quartet FRI 31 MAY - WED 5 JUNE

Set in New York City, A Late Quartet follows the fortunes of a world-renowned string quartet. Bound together by their passion for music, particularly for Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 14, Opus 131, the four musicians are fast approaching their 25th anniversary performance. But when veteran cellist Peter (Walken) is diagnosed with Parkinson’s and suddenly announces his retirement, the repercussions threaten to tear the group apart. Exquisitely photographed by cinematographer Frederick Elmes (The Ice Storm, Synecdoche New York) and graced with wonderful performances, especially by Walken and Hoffman, the film packs plenty of emotional drama. It also offers a moving meditation on the ways in which great artists who work together must struggle to remain DIR: JEFF NICHOLS more than the sum of their parts despite STARRING: MATTHEW MCCONAUGHEY, the sometimes terrible costs to the indiREESE WITHERSPOON, TYE SHERIDAN, vidual artists. Lawrence of Arabia SUN 2 JUNE

Evil Dead FRI 31 MAY - SAT 1 JUNE With both The Evil Dead’s original creator, Sam Raimi, and its original star, Bruce Campbell, as co-producers, this much anticipated remake is billed as ‘the most terrifying film you will ever experience’. Five friends decamp to a remote cabin to help drug-addicted Mia (Levy) get clean, and after they discover a carelessly discarded Book of the Dead, their numbers are gradually and brutally reduced. Director Alvarez has form as a horror merchant in his native Uruguay, and several of the young stars are already veterans of the genre (Lucas, Cloverfield; Fernandez, Deadgirl; Pucci, Carriers). As with the original, the script – here co-written by Diablo Cody (Jennifer’s Body, Juno) – is both chilling and occasionally hilarious. Essential horror viewing. DIR: FEDE ALVAREZ. STARRING: JANE LEVY, LOU TAYLOR PUCCI, JESSICA LUCAS, SHILOH FERNANDEZ.

Director David Lean and screenwriters Robert Bolt and Michael Wilson’s expansive account of the Arab revolt and the duplicity of the imperial powers in the latter stages of World War One is not an attempt to elucidate the truth about the part played by a still mysterious and controversial figure. Rather, it is a grandiose, Fordian celebration of the myth the real T. E. Lawrence did so much to create. Peter O’Toole’s charismatic (and best) performance presents a character of fascinatingly half-hidden complexities and flaws. A carefully orchestrated narrative of battles, heroic journeys and betrayals, this supreme achievement of epic cinema is shown here in a new, full digital restoration to celebrate the film’s 50th anniversary.

The Reluctant Fundamentalist SUN 2 JUNE - MON 3 JUNE From award-winning director Mira Nair (Monsoon Wedding), and based on the acclaimed novel by Moshin Hamid, The Reluctant Fundamentalist leads us through the beguiling worlds of New York, Lahore and Istanbul to explore prejudice and the phenomenon of globalisation. Changez Khan (Ahmed), a young Pakistani professor, was educated at Princeton and was a brilliant business analyst on Wall Street. He had a glittering future ahead of him, and the beautiful and sophisticated Erica (Hudson), with whom he was set to share that future. In the aftermath of 9/11, the alienation and suspicion he suddenly experiences drives him back to Lahore. There, it is not long before his charisma and intelligence catapult him to become a leader, both in the eyes of the Pakistani students who revere him, and the American government that suspects him. 5 Broken Cameras MON 3 JUNE - THU 6 JUNE At the birth of his son Gibreel, Palestinian farmer Emad Burnat is given his first movie camera and begins recording both Gibreel’s childhood and the conflict growing around them. As Israel’s controversial ‘security barrier’ is built through their village, olive groves and buildings are destroyed by Israeli troops; violent protests are even more violently suppressed, and in the process the five cameras of the title are smashed. But with the help of Jewish filmmaker Guy Davidi, the narrative also reflects moments of hope and minor triumph that underpin the determined spirit of Burnat, his family and their fellow residents. Whatever one may think about this complex and divisive issue, Burnat and Davidi’s documentary is an affecting, sometimes almost poetic study that reminds us that despite the political intransigence, the situation must one day be resolved. I’m So Excited! FRI 7 JUNE - WED 12 JUNE After the more serious territory of his recent films, Almodóvar’s latest will come as a tonic to those who miss the flamboyant farceur whose energetic romps (Law Of Desire, Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown) never came up for air. Featuring cameos from Antonio Banderas and Penélope Cruz, I’m So Excited! sees Almodóvar return to his crazy comedy roots. A group of travellers face a life-threatening situation on board a plane to Mexico City and, trapped in a confined space, they let off steam; attempt to seduce and be seduced; lie to themselves and each other; and battle with fear, loneliness and the prospect of death. The result is one of Almodóvar’s most ambitious comedies yet, and confirms his status as the most daring and original voice in contemporary cinema. DIR: PEDRO ALMODÓVAR. STARRING: CECILIA ROTH, JAVIER CÁMARA, PEPA CHARRO.

The Great Gatsby 2D & 3D FRI 7 JUNE - THU 13 JUNE For this new adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s bittersweet novel set during New York’s gaudy jazz era, director Luhrmann (Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge) has considerably upped the ante. Arguably eclipsing Robert Redford’s portrayal in the 1974 version, Leonardo DiCaprio as the maverick millionaire Jay Gatsby was an inspired casting move; but dramatically enhancing the glitz and glamour of 1920s Manhattan by shooting it in 3D was a real masterstroke. Add to that Mulligan (Drive) as Daisy, Gatsby’s sexy, if unobtainable, love interest, Edgerton (Zero Dark Thirty) as her philandering husband, and Maguire (Spider-Man) as Nick Carraway, the impressionable “hick-from-the-sticks” writer who witnesses the unravelling of a precarious status quo, and you have an epic parable of excess and its consequences. Contains moderate sex, violence and bloody images.

Bernie SAT 8 JUNE - MON 10 JUNE

The Eye of the Storm FRI 7 JUNE - WED 12 JUNE The complexities of Australian Nobel Prize winner Patrick White’s novel are a challenge that veteran director Schepisi (Roxanne, Last Orders) rises to magnificently with this lushly filmed tale of family regret and greed. Rampling is Elizabeth Hunter, the rich, ailing matriarch whose adult children, Basil and Dorothy (Rush and Davis), have returned home to secure what they regard as their rightful inheritances. But although largely confined to her deathbed, Elizabeth is wise to their intentions and plays a long, manipulative game. Timely flashbacks illuminate their motivations, and all three wonderful actors imbue the web of strangely hollow deceit with considerable subtlety. Schepisi’s daughter Alexandra is also excellent as the nurse whom Basil’s roving libido inevitably draws into the familial stew. An absorbing, complex, masterfully executed work.

Sweet-natured funeral director Bernie (Black) is one of the most beloved residents of the little Texan town of Carthage. He teaches in Sunday school, sings in the church choir, and even befriends the notoriously sour-tempered Marjorie (MacLaine). As the wealthy widow becomes ever more demanding, Bernie runs her errands, accompanies her on holiday and manages her finances. But after months without seeing her, the disbelieving townsfolk are shocked to hear that she has been found dead in a freezer – and that Bernie has been charged with the murder. Based on a real-life homicide case, Linklater’s (School Of Rock, Dazed And Confused) social comedy is full of sharp observations and wonderful ensemble performances, including McConaughey as the sceptical local DA charged with the impossible task of trying to convict everyone’s favourite guy. Contains one use of strong language.

Populaire FRI 14 JUNE - THU 20 JUNE

The Space Between + Q&A TUE 11 JUNE Shot in glorious summer sunlight in only 17 days, on a tiny budget, The Space Between follows 2 strangers brought together and given a chance to turn their lives around. Moving from darkness and loss to light and hope, the story is inspired by Edinburgh and features an eclectic soundtrack from brilliant contemporary Scots music-makers. We are delighted to announce that the performance will be followed by a live Q&A with the writer/director Tim Barrow. The Birks is dedicated to supporting homegrown Scottish film-makers and you can show your support as well by coming down to watch this wonderful film and catch a rare opportunity to meet the creator!

If you combined the wit and charm of The Artist with the period feel of Mad Men (and a little bit of Rocky’s competitive edge thrown in for good measure), the result would be first-time director Roinsard’s enjoyable romcom Populaire. Set in Normandy in 1958, the film centres on country girl Rose (François, The Page Turner), who leaves behind her father’s grocery store to follow her dream of becoming a secretary. When her new boss Louis (Duris, The Beat That My Heart Skipped) decides to enter her for the local speedtyping competition, he moves her into his country house to oversee the training personally. The film’s charismatic two leads make a believable ‘will they/won’t they?’ couple, captured perfectly in a Rock Hudson/Doris Day style by BAFTA-winning cinematographer Guillaume Schiffman. The Hangover Part III FRI 14 JUNE - THU 20 JUNE The staggering success of the first two Hangover movies means that the final part of director Phillips’ hilariously hapless trilogy has lots to live up to, and it doesn’t disappoint. Alan, Stu, Phil and Doug are all present and politically incorrect, again played by Galifianakis, Helms, Cooper and Bartha, abetted by Jeffrey Tambor as Alan’s father Sid, and Heather Graham as Jade, Stu’s accidental wife from episode one. It begins on an oddly sober note at Sid’s funeral, but soon we’re back in Las Vegas, the wolfpack’s spiritual home, for more primo-quality, alcohol-fuelled mayhem. Standout moments include Alan salaciously sharing a lollipop with Bridesmaids star Melissa McCarthy, and his soon-to-be immortal line, “I just bought a giraffe, my life is perfect,” just before it patently isn’t.

I Know Where I’m Going SUN 16 JUNE - ABERFELDY MOD To celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Aberfeldy mod, we’re showing Powell and Pressburger’s ‘I Know Where I’m Going’. It might not be in Gaelic, but this is one of the finest portraits of a traditional rural Scotttish community ever made. A brilliant cast include Roger Livesey (‘Colonel Blimp’) and a young Petula Clark but the real star of the film is the Scottish landscape and community. Some breath-taking footage showcases the beauty of our country, including the Corryveckan whirlpool shot near the Hebridean islands of Scarba and Jura. Heaped with laurels from many different sources from Raymond Chandler to Barry Norman, the film has since been overshadowed by its more illustrious cousin, ‘Whisky Galore!’, this is a beautiful snapshot of a bygone era and deserves more recognition, especially in its home country.

DIRECTOR: TODD PHILLIPS. STARRING: BRADLEY COOPER, ZACH GALIFIOther events on the day include a tour of ANAKIS, ED HELMS, JUSTIN BARTHA. Live Theatre Broadcast GLOBE LIVE: Henry V WED 5 JUNE 12:00 Another debut in our programme, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre steps into the 21st century and onto the screen at The Birks. Shakespeare’s masterpiece of the turbulence of war and the arts of peace tells the romantic story of Henry’s campaign to recapture the English possessions in France. But the ambitions of this charismatic king are challenged by a host of vivid characters caught up in the real horrors of war. Henry V, which opened the new Globe with the words ‘O for a muse of fire’, celebrates the power of language to summon into life courts, pubs, ships and battlefields within the ‘wooden O’ - and beyond. Much loved for his performance as Prince Hal in Henry IV Parts 1 & 2 (2010), Jamie Parker returns to Hal’s journey as Henry V.

Award-winning director Richard Jones (Il trittico, Anna Nicole) directs a Gloriana for our time, framing the depiction of the 16th-century Queen in a setting that re-creates the excitement of our own Queen’s Coronation year. MET Encore: Carmen THU 13 JUNE 12:00 This summer, ahead of the full Met season starting in October with Eugene Onegin, we are able to give a taster of what is to come with a summer of encore performance highlights of seasons gone by. First up is the second-most performed opera of all-time, Bizet’s Carmen.

Richard Eyre’s hit production stars Elena Garanea as the seductive gypsy of the title, opposite Roberto Alagna as the obsessed Don José. Carmen “is about sex, violence, and racism—and its corollary: freedom,” the director says about Bizet’s drama. “It is one of the inalienably great works of art. It’s sexy, in every sense. And I think it should be shocking.” Originally performed on January 16th 2010. MET ENCORE BROADCAST

MET Encore: IL Trovatore TUE 2 JULY 12:00 The Met Summer Season continues with another all-time classic, Verdi’s ‘Il Trovatore’.

David McVicar’s stirring production of Verdi’s intense drama premiered at the Met in the 2008–09 season. This revival stars four extraordinary singers—Sondra Radvanovsky, Dolora Zajick, Marcelo Álvarez, and Dmitri Hvorostovsky—in what might be the composer’s most melodically rich score. MET Encore: Armida TUE 9 JULY 12:00 This mythical story of a sorceress who enthralls men in her island prison has inspired operatic settings by a multitude of composers, including Gluck, Haydn, and Dvorák. Renée Fleming stars in the title role of Rossini’s version, opposite no fewer than five tenors.

The event film will be going behindthe-scenes to show some of the process of putting the exhibition together as well as touring Norway to provide an in-depth biography of a man who lived from the mid19th century right through to the German occupation of Norway in the Second World War. Norwegian and international guests will also offer their expert insight and knowledge to host Tim Marlow.

Director Mary Zimmerman describes the work as “a buried treasure, a box of jewels.” Armida is a fanciful and magical tale with “an epic, enchanted quality and a tremendous visual element.” Originally performed May 1st 2010 MET ENCORE BROADCAST

Glyndebourne: Ariadne auf Naxos TUE 4 JUNE 19:00 The Birks welcomes Glyndebourne to its live broadcast lineup with Ariadne Auf Naxos. The story is portrayed by a dramatic performance, as represented by the irrepressible Zerbinetta (Laura Claycomb) and the high seriousness of the classical myth of Ariadne (Soile Isokoski). The opera was a collaboration between Richard Strauss and writer Hugo von Hofmannsthal. After the enormous success of Der Rosenkavalier, the two men conceived the idea of a light entertainment, a small trifle to amuse and divert the public. In Vladimir Jurowski’s final season as Music Director he will conduct the London Philharmonic Orchestra in his first fully-staged Strauss opera, working with the German director Katharina Thoma, making her UK debut.

Glyndebourne: Falstaff MON 17 JUNE 19:30 Throughout his long career, Verdi longed to find a good subject for a comic opera. Towards the very end of it he found that subject, in the vast and jovial shape of Shakespeare’s John Falstaff. This revival of the production by Richard Jones, first seen at Glyndebourne in 2009, places the action firmly in Windsor with recognisably English characters. ‘It’s a clever conceit,’ said The Observer, ‘brilliantly executed by the designer Ultz, whose sharp eye for detail, authentic and witty, is part of the charm.’ This screening will be a recording of the 2009 performance, conducted by Vladimir Jurowski and directed by Richard Jones. Starring Peter Hoare and Christopher Purves, this is a joyously life-affirming work guaranteed to leave you smiling for a long time after. 16

Glyndebourne: Le nozze di Figaro MON 8 JULY 19:30 Seventh in The Guardian’s list of the 50 top operas of all time, Mozart’s Le Nozze Di Figaro blends wit and humanity with astounding, glorious music. Michael Grandage’s production of Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro returns to Glyndebourne, with a new cast of singers and conductor Jérémie Rhorer making his UK operatic debut. The opera has particular significance as it was the first opera ever to be performed at Glyndebourne in 1934, with founder John Christie’s wife and co-founder Audrey Mildmay in the role of Susanna. Please note that this is an encore screening of an original 2012 performance. Originally performed on April 30th 2011.

WITH

JOHN MUIR’

A 90-minute multimedia presentation that considers the philosophy and prophetic vision of John Muir. Muir emigrated from Scotland to the USA as a youngster and went on to become one of the world’s greatest ecologists. This presentation is a blend of “philosophic contemplation, naturalistic descriptions, environmental pleas, idealistic speculations and feisty argument” - all in the context of a 220-mile backpacking journey through the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California - Muir’s “Range of Light”. Behind the Candelabra FRI 21 JUNE - THU 27 JUNE Although he successfully sued the Daily Mirror for suggesting he was gay, it was nevertheless an open Hollywood secret that between 1976 and 1982 the outrageously camp Liberace was in a relationship with his young chauffeur, Scott Thorson.

Soderbergh drew on Thorson’s autobiography to make this biopic, starring a highly convincing Douglas as Liberace, and an equally plausible Damon as the teenage Thorson. With Lowe as Liberace’s pinch-faced plastic surgeon, a supercilious Aykroyd as his agent and Reynolds as his sanctified mother, Behind The Candelabra is by turns funny, melodramatic, shocking and sad.

The scions of two wealthy Bordeaux families, Thérèse and Bernard, join together in a marriage of political and financial convenience in 1920s France. But although attracted by the prospect of secure affluence, Thérèse finds herself increasingly at odds with her boorish, indecisive husband. Her sister-in-law’s scandalous affair with an outsider to their privileged little world, followed by the birth of a child she cannot love, add to Thérèse’s dissatisfaction, eventually prompting actions which have tragic consequences. Grave of the Fireflies My Neighbor Totoro Directed by Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata, Grave Of The Fireflies is an indelible anime about a brother and sister trying to survive during the Second World War. Caught up in the firebombing of Kobe in 1945, Seita and his little sister Setsuko lose their mother and their home. Unable to contact their father on the frontline, they flee to the country, stealing or begging for food. The societal breakdown that inevitably followed the razing of the cities means they are left truly alone to fend for themselves. Undeniably sad but stunningly rendered, this animation does not flinch from the true human tragedy of war. Contains moderate war horror.

Miyazaki’s superbly animated tale is considered to be one of the bestloved family films of all time. The story follows Satsuki (Hidaka) and Mei (Sakamoto), two young girls who find their new home is by a mystical forest inhabited by a menagerie of fantastical creatures called Totoros. They befriend O-Totoro, the biggest and eldest of them, and king of the forest. While the girls’ mother lies sick in hospital, O-Totoro takes them on a magical adventure and helps them to understand the realities of life. Containing a powerful ecological theme, this is a lovingly crafted work of depth, import and beauty.

Fire in the Night MON 1 JULY - PREMIERE

Man of Steel 2D & 3D FRI 28 JUNE - THU 4 JULY Every kid growing up feels ‘different’ sometimes and asks who they are and why they are here, but for young Clark Kent (Cavill) the answers are hardly reassuring. Sent to planet Earth by his father (Crowe), Clark is raised by his adoptive parents (Lane and Costner) to always do the right thing. As a young man he finds that doing the right thing means using his alien powers to fight General Zod (Shannon, Mud, The Iceman) and become a symbol of hope – for humanity in general and Lois Lane (Adams) in particular. Co-written and co-produced by Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight Trilogy), Snyder’s (Watchmen, 300) reboot of the DC Comics franchise is darker and more serious than previous versions, without sacrificing any of the adrenaline-pumping spectacle that we would expect from Krypton’s greatest son.

Directed and produced by Anthony Wonke (The Tower: A Tale of Two Cities), the doc is based on the book of the same name by Stephen McGinty, and looks at the tragedy that occurred in July 1988 on the Piper Alpha rig, where 167 men were killed. The doc will feature testimonies from survivors and rescuers who were in the midst of a fire that engulfed a rig that was, at one time, the world’s largest oil producer. Fire in the Night looks at how the disaster has shaped each of their lives. “Piper Alpha was a disaster which made a huge impact both on those personally involved in it at the time but also on those who watched those tragic events unfold on our TV screens all those years ago,” said Ewan Angus, commissioning editor for BBC Scotland. “Looking back at it again through the eyes of those most closely involved in it will, I’m sure, shed further light on one of Scotland’s darkest industrial days.” DIR: ANTHONY WONKE UK 2012/TBC /

Summer In February FRI 5 JULY - THU 11 JULY Under the looming shadow of World War One, a group of freespirited artists known as the Lamorna Group settled in west Cornwall. They included Alfred ‘A. J.’ Munnings, an impressively talented firebrand who later became president of the Royal Academy. Based on Jonathan Smith’s novel and actual events, director Menaul’s (The Forsyte Saga) film focuses on the fateful love triangle between Munnings, the upperclass bohemian Florence CarterWood, and the Lamorna Estate’s land agent, Gilbert Evans. The affair unsettled the laissez-faire dynamic of the artists’ colony, and Summer In February brilliantly captures both their passions and the social mores of the time. With great performances from Cooper (My Week With Marilyn), Browning (Sucker Punch) And Stevens (Downton Abbey) as the tormented lovers, it’s also evocatively shot using many of the original locations. DIRECTOR: CHRISTOPHER MENAUL. STARRING: DOMINIC COOPER, EMILY BROWNING, DAN STEVENS, HATTIE MORAHAN. UK 2013 / 1H41M / 15

A Hijacking FRI 5 JULY - MON 8 JULY His star firmly in the ascendant with screenwriting credits for The Hunt and the TV series Borgen, Lindholm now adds a striking directorial string to his bow with this topical thriller, in which Somali pirates overrun a Danish freighter in the Indian Ocean. Lindholm quietly builds up the tension through the ordeal of his three main characters, the ship’s cook Mikkel (Asbæk, Borgen), the shipping company boss (Malling, The Killing) who, against professional advice, insists on dealing directly with the pirates, and his impetuous assistant (Salim, Borgen). Fans of Scandi-drama will recognise these and other stalwarts of Danish TV, but their versatility in this almost documentary-style film is especially impressive, and for maximum authenticity Lindholm even filmed aboard a ship that had once actually been hijacked.

A Place in the Sun SUN 7 JULY

The Iceman FRI 5 JULY - WED 10 JULY With complex thrillers like Take Shelter and Premium Rush under his belt, Shannon is emerging as the go-to guy for damaged-goods anti-heroes. As real-life freelance killer Richard Kuklinski he emits exactly the right degree of quiet, psychopathic menace. Married to his unsuspecting teenage sweetheart (Ryder), Kuklinski is hired to do the dirty work for the more overtly nasty New Jersey gangster Roy Demeo (Liotta). Along the way he hooks up with friends alumnus David Schwimmer and Captain America’s Chris Evans, both almost unrecognisable as greasy hoodlums sporting alarming facial hair. It’s a simple tale of killer takes all – or at any rate, most – but Shannon’s considerable presence, and the gritty ’70s look created by newbie director Ariel Vromen, ensure that The Iceman exerts an unyielding grip on its audience.

Essentially a remake of 1931’s An American Tragedy, George Stevens’ movie of Theodore Dreiser’s hefty novel is far superior, not least for the calibre of its stars. Clift is the handsome young drifter given a lowly job in his wealthy uncle’s factory, where he meets and, against orders, beds co-worker Alice (Winters), who sees him as an escape from her drudgery. But as he mingles in more rarefied family circles, George is smitten by the glamorous socialite Angela Vickers (Taylor at her most radiant), only to find himself trapped by Alice’s pregnancy. The consequence is the tragedy of the novel’s title, and involves a young Raymond Burr, working up his later Perry Mason role as a local DA. But apart from its six Oscars, A Place In The Sun is most memorable for the smouldering romance between Clift and Taylor.

Beware of Mr. Baker TUE 9 JULY - THU 11 JULY When a documentary opens with its subject belting the director hard on the nose, you know you’re in for something pretty unusual – but then legendary drummer Ginger Baker is exactly that. Inspired by great post-war jazz players like Phil Seamen and Max Roach, Baker is best known for playing with Cream, Traffic and Ginger Baker’s Airforce, although he later abandoned Britain to settle in Nigeria to join the equally eccentric Fela Kuti. Following an interview he did with Baker for Rolling Stone in 2009, journalist Jay Bulger revisited the now ailing and financially strapped musician on his South African farm. The film features many engaging reminiscences by the irascible, nay arrogant, 73-year-old, and interviews with past musical partners combined with period concert footage will prove compulsive viewing for all music fans.
