CALVARY

DIVERGENT

Calvary’s opening scene sees kindly rural priest Father Lavelle (Gleeson) threatened in the confession box by an unseen man who vows to kill him in a week’s time. The priest thinks he knows the killer’s identity – but, crucially, we don’t, and the film becomes a suspenseful guessing game as we watch him visiting members of his flock. Captivating, characterful and bursting with black humour, CALVARY is a gripping whodunnit.

Divergent is a thrilling action-adventure film set in a world where people are divided into distinct factions based on human virtues. Tris Prior is warned she is Divergent and will never fit into any one group. When she discovers a conspiracy by a faction leader to destroy all Divergents, Tris must learn to trust in the mysterious Four and together they must find out what makes being Divergent so dangerous before it’s too late.

A washed-up TV anchorman (Pierce Brosnan), a mousy single mum (Toni Collette), a grumpy pizza delivery man (Aaron Paul) and a bipolar punk (Imogen Poots) have all decided to jump off the roof of the same building. Their unexpected meeting makes for a whacky comic drama in this Nick Hornby adaptation.

Liam Neeson stars as jaundiced air marshal Bill Marks, who begins to receive threatening text messages while on a flight from JFK to Heathrow. He and fellow passenger Julianne Moore then battle a sinister foe in this brilliantly claustrophobic thriller.

LOVE PUNCH

STARRED UP

When bitter divorcees (Emma Thompson, Pierce Brosnan) fall prey to a swindler, they call in their social cavalry (Timothy Spall, Celia Imrie) to help them wreak revenge. Set on the Côte d’Azur, the witty THE LOVE PUNCH is that rare thing, a middle-aged caper movie.

Titled after the practice of consigning violent young offenders to adult prisons, Mackenzie’s film centres on troubled inmate Eric, whose rehabilitation is in the hands of Friend’s posh and distrusted social worker. Against Eric’s sullen obduracy, he fights a seemingly losing battle in this starkly stunning work.

The Birks Wine Society Led by our resident oenologist, we will be presenting monthly wine tastings usually on the last Wednesday of the month. This is an opportunity to try a variety of wines from local and nearby merchants and an opportunity to try wines you may never have tasted before. Tastings will be informative but relaxed, will cater for everyone and will tie in with our monthly programmes. We will evaluate all types of wine – typically five each meeting and the evening will be rounded off with a light finger buffet, freshly produced by our catering team. There’s no fee to join, all that we ask is when you attend you pay the admission fee on the night. That will vary depending on the wines being tasted but generally will be around £10.

Next tasting on Wednesday 28th May at 7.00pm tickets available at the box office.

THE ARMSTRONG LIE

On a delta in the Deep South, six-yearold Hushpuppy struggles to make sense of the world in the unpredictable care of her father. When a torrential storm engulfs local houses, Hushpuppy conjures visions of melting ice caps from which long-extinct beasts emerge to reclaim the planet.

Smartly constructed and scathingly sharp, The Armstrong Lie presents an effective indictment of its unscrupulous subject -- as well as the sports culture that spawned him.

THE BRIDGE RISING sun 18 may

Scottish islanders take on the government, big industry and the Bank of America - and win! ‘The Bridge Rising’ tells the story of the Skye Bridge tolls, Scotland’s first PFI (Private Finance for Public Works) scheme. In the words of the protagonists themselves, from protestors to politicians, police to prosecutor, journalist to engineer - this film unpacks the twists and turns of the 10-year battle against the tolls. With a nod to Ealing comedies of yesteryear, the story is told with an air of mischief and unfolds against the backdrop of stunning scenery and a powerful musical score. 20 FEET FROM STARDOM mon 19 may

Noted music documentarian Morgan Neville’s Oscar-winning film lovingly salutes those unacknowledged but certainly not unsung heroines of the music business, the backing singers. Neville combines extensive interviews with the stars whose careers wouldn’t have succeeded without them – think of the Stones’ Gimme Shelter or David Bowie’s Young Americans – with profiles of some of the greatest, most enduring talents, including Merry Clayton, Darlene Love and Claudia Lennear. But revealing as the interviews are, 20 FEET FROM STARDOM’s finest moments spring from the archives: studio and concert performances from the present day’s Bruce Springsteen and Sting, going back to Ike and Tina Turner’s Ikettes and Phil Spector’s Crystals (in reality, Darlene Love and the Blossoms). Wonderful characters, fantastic voices, and overall a marvellously uplifting movie no music fan should miss. In conjunction with Scotland Loves Anime we are running a Double screening on Sunday 11th May for the fantastic price of £10.00 for both screenings. Akira is a 1988 Japanese animated cyberpunk action film, Akira is regarded by many critics as a landmark anime film, one that influenced much of the art in the anime world that followed its release with many illustrators in the manga industry citing the film as an important influence. The film led the way for the growth of popularity of anime outside of Japan. Akira is considered a forerunner of the second wave of anime fandom that began in the early 1990s and has gained a massive cult following since then. Wolf Children won the 2013 Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year, the 2012 Mainichi Film Award for Best Animation Film, and the 2013 Animation of the Year award at TAF. It has also won two awards at the Oslo Films from the South festival in Norway: the main award, the Silver Mirror, and the audience award. Wolf Children won an Audience Award at 2013 New York International Children’s Film Festival.

Hana is a 19-year-old student who falls in a “fairy-tale like” love with a “wolf man”. Over the course of the 13-year story Hana gives birth to two children - older sister Yuki, and younger brother Ame, or “Snow and Rain”. At first the family quietly lives in the city trying to hide their wolf heritage, but when the “wolf man” suddenly dies Hana makes the decision to move to a rural town, far from their previous city life.

The film depicts a dystopian version of Tokyo in the year 2019, with cyberpunk tones. The plot focuses on teenage biker Tetsuo Shima and his psychic powers, and the leader of his biker gang, Shotaro Kaneda. Kaneda tries to preven imprisoned psychic Akira. While most of the character designs and settings were adapted from the original 2182-page manga epic, the restructured plot of the movie differs considerably from the print version, pruning much of the last half of the manga.

Pinocchio

Rebel Without a cause

sat 3 may

sat 10 may and thur 15 may

Jim Stark (Dean) is the new kid in town. He has a past that troubles him, and hopes to find a replacement love for what’s missing at home. He forms a relationship with Judy (Wood) and a friendship with Ray (Edward Platt), adulation from Pluto (Mineo) – but still has to fight his peers to gain respect. The switchknife and the speeding car are the weapons of choice. With an Academy Award-winning script by Stewart Stern (and awards for the two key support performances)

When the gentle woodcarver Geppetto (Christian Rub) builds a marionette to be his substitute son, a benevolent fairy brings the toy to life. The puppet, named Pinocchio (Dick Jones), is not yet a human boy. He must earn the right to be real by proving that he is brave, truthful, and unselfish. But, even with the help of Jiminy (Cliff Edwards), a cricket who the fairy assigns to be Pinocchio’s conscience, the marionette goes astray. A portrait of the king, who wanted to marry the shepherdess, also came to life, disposed of the real king, took his place and then pursued the shepherdess and chimneysweep with the king’s police force. Calamity Jane

a fistful of dollars

Doris Day looks no more like the real Calamity Jane than you or I do, but this 1953 film is intended as a lighthearted musical, not a historical tract. As portrayed by the freckled Ms Day, Jane is a rootin’, tootin’ and shootin’ hoyden in the western town of Deadwood.

Clint Eastwood plays a cynical gunfighter who comes to a small border town and offers his services to two rivaling gangs. Neither gang is aware of his double play, and each thinks it is using him, but the stranger will outwit them both.

Believing he can escape retribution, he is unprepared for the courageous, life-embracing Ida Arnold. Greene’s gripping thriller, exposes a world of loneliness and fear, of life lived on the ‘dangerous edge of things’. “I read Brighton Rock when I was about thirteen. One of the first lessons I took from it was that a serious novel could be an exciting novel - that the novel of adventure could also be the novel of ideas” -- Ian McEwan
