Festivals of May...

Turo General Assistant

Coming up 20th July 2014 monty python live (mostly)

Knotted hankies at the ready: it’s Monty Python’s historic last stand broadcast live from London’s O2 Arena. It’s been more than three decades since they last appeared on stage together for a Hollywood Bowl show. But now surviving Pythons John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin - combined age: 357! - are dusting down those classic comedy routines for their final farewell. The legendary quintet promise a selection of their finest sketches with modern, topical and suitably Python-esque twists. It’s certain to be one of the greatest live events of the year.

Turo is our youngest member of staff here at the Birks and is fitting in his shifts around his school work, he started of as a regular volunteer usher before moving to be a member of our staff team. So now he can help you with your coffee as well as finding your seat!

Bad Neighbors

the other woman

Kelly (Byrne, BRIDESMAIDS) and Mac (Rogen, SUPERBAD, KNOCKED UP) discover that their new next-door neighbours are a raucous student fraternity. BAD NEIGHBOURS follows the couple’s desperate efforts to maintain a quiet life for themselves and their newborn baby. Needless to say, with the director, producers and writers of such gross-out comedies as THE 40 YEAR-OLD VIRGIN, FUNNY PEOPLE and GET HIM TO THE GREEK behind the camera, they don’t stand much of a chance!

Cameron Diaz sparkles as smart-mouthed sexual adventuress Carly, who atypically falls for Mark, a hunky married cheat (CosterWaldau, JO NESBO’S HEADHUNTERS). When his wife (Mann, THIS IS 40) unites with Carly to undo him, the ensuing comedy rampage moves along at a heady clip. This feel-good movie with agreeably feminist undertones will raise the odd tear as well as plenty of cheers.

godzilla

x-men:days of future past

The blockbuster season gets off to a colossal start with this reboot of 1954’s GOJIRA. Eschewing the campy schlock of many previous spinoffs, this GODZILLA is a new origin story. In this version, it’s not radiation that spawns the monster, but the other way around: the so-called atomic tests of the 1950s were in reality early attempts to kill the 600-foot tall beast. Now Godzilla is leaving its ocean home, creating a tsunami in its wake and wreaking terrifying devastation wherever it goes; the human characters, including a soldier, a nurse and a scientist, are helpless in the face of this immense force of nature. Director Edwards gets the balance between narrative tease and CGI big reveal exactly right, and the result is genuinely thrilling: a dark, muscular epic in an entirely believable present-day setting.

In a scintillatingly imaginative adaptation of one of Marvel’s most popular storylines, the original X-Men (Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen et al) unite with the stars of 2011’s prequel FIRST CLASS (including James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence and Nicolas Hoult) to thwart the Sentinels ¬– an army of mutant-killing robots. Kicking off with Wolverine going back in time to stop Mystique from killing the Sentinels’ leader (Peter Dinklage), thus averting a ruinous war, the sparky relationships between the older and younger characters – especially Stewart and McAvoy as the two Xaviers – add an entertaining dimension to the most visually thrilling X-MEN episode yet. And with regular writers Simon Kinberg and Jane Goldman on board alongside returning director Singer, that’s the least of the film’s many surprises.

MALEFICENT – a character familiar to filmlovers of all ages as the arch-villainess in Disney’s 1959 SLEEPING BEAUTY – sports a pair of horns and the sharpest cheekbones yet seen in filmdom. As she wreaks revenge for her betrayal and seeks to protect her homeland from King Stefan, she places an irrevocable curse on his daughter Aurora. But later it transpires that the child may hold the key to peace, and Maleficent is obliged to take drastic action – which director Robert Stromberg orchestrates with an imaginative vision matched only by Jolie’s gleeful malevolence. Imelda Staunton, Miranda Richardson, Juno Temple and Peter Capaldi are among a starry cast of quirky characters, and this epic twist on the beloved fairy tale looks as spectacular as only a Disney production can.

The epic action of “Edge of Tomorrow” unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world. Major William Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop— forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again…and again. Muppets Most Wanted

The Lunch box

Disney’s “Muppets Most Wanted” takes the entire Muppets gang on a global tour, selling out grand theaters in some of Europe’s most exciting destinations, including Berlin, Madrid, Dublin and London. But mayhem follows the Muppets overseas, as they find themselves unwittingly entangled in an international crime caper headed by Constantine-the World’s Number One Criminal.

When the lunch she has prepared for her husband is delivered to a stranger (Irrfat Khan, LIFE OF PI) by mistake, Ila (Nimrat Kaur) encloses a note of apology to its unknown recipient in the next day’s lunchbox. Thus begins a touching correspondence, and a delicately acted romance.

Locke

love punch

Shot in real time during a nocturnal drive along the M6, with no props and only a voice cast for support, Tom Hardy gives a spellbinding solo performance as mild-mannered Ivan Locke. When he receives a phone call that will change his life, he is forced to deal with a terrible dilemma. As pieces of the jigsaw are gradually revealed, the result becomes a gripping, ingenious psychological thriller.

When bitter divorcees (Thompson and Brosnan) fall prey to a swindler, they call in their social cavalry (Spall and Imrie) to help them wreak revenge. Its four stars well on the road to becoming national treasures, the witty the LOVE PUNCH is that rare thing, a middle-aged caper movie – and being set largely on the Côte d’Azur, it also looks terrific.

This 3D documentary tells one of the world’s greatest adventure stories of all time, the first ever conquest of Mount Everest by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953. Original colour footage and photographs are seamlessly woven into interviews and dramatic recreations to recount the historic triumph of the modest mountaineer from New Zealand and his expert Sherpa. This high-altitude fly-on-the-wall account conveys both the climbers’ heroic trials and the ambition and hope the wider world invested in their mission, at a time when it was slowly recovering from the horrors of WWII and starting to believe in a brighter new age. The Birks Wine Society Led by our resident oenologist, we will be presenting monthly wine tastings usually on the last Wednesday of the month. This is an opportunity to try a variety of wines from local and nearby merchants and an opportunity to try wines you may never have tasted before. Tastings will be informative but relaxed, will cater for everyone and will tie in with our monthly programmes. We will evaluate all types of wine – typically five each meeting and the evening will be rounded off with a light finger buffet, freshly produced by our catering team. There’s no fee to join, all that we ask is when you attend you pay the admission fee on the night. That will vary depending on the wines being tasted but generally will be around £10. Next tasting on Wednesday 25th June at 7.00pm tickets available at the box office.

the edge of the world

the last king of scotland

sun 15 june

wed 25 june - thur 26 june

The film is the story of the de-population of one of the isolated, outer islands of Scotland as, one by one, the younger generation leaves for the greater opportunities offered by the mainland, making it harder to follow the old ways of life there.

The first fiction feature from Oscarwinning documentary director Macdonald (TOUCHING THE VOID) is rooted in the reality of Idi Amin’s brutal rule in Uganda. Wooed by the president’s generosity, charm and apparent populist appeal, young Scottish doctor Nicholas Garrigan (McAvoy) agrees to become Amin’s personal physician and soon finds himself appointed numberone advisor on all manner of subjects, from architecture to foreign policy. Hugely flattered at first, the doctor does not want to see what is going on around him, and by the time he is forced to face the atrocities of Amin’s command, he is already in over his head. A bold combination of comedy and horror that balances psychological insight and historical facts, the film’s success is founded on a monumental performance from Whitaker.

Robbie Manson (Eric Berry) wants to leave the island and explore the wider world. Robbie’s friend Andrew Gray (Niall MacGinnis) and his sister, Ruth Manson (Belle Chrystall) are sweethearts and are quite willing to stay. Of their fathers, Peter Manson (John Laurie) is determined to stay while James Gray (Finlay Currie) suspects that their way of life cannot last much longer. But if Robbie leaves, that will make it harder for the others because there will be one less young man to help with the fishing and the crofting.
