NOTES FROM A HIGHLAND CINEMA...

Restaurant Café Bar

Wow – a year since we opened! What an amazing year it has been as well – I would like to thank all on the staff team for making The Birks Cinema the fabulous place it is. With spring in the air, there are a few changes at The Birks. I am delighted to announce that Fiona Sloan has been appointed as the General Manager of the cinema, and know that the cinema will go from strength to strength under her stewardship. I feel that after the many years of being involved in the project, and a year of business under its belt, it is time for me to step back and have decided to step down from the Board of Directors. Our new Chair from April on will be Keith MacGillivray. I would like to thank both Keith and the rest of the Board for all their support and hard work over the last year or so. I am looking forward to having more time to see more films and Fiona has organised a stunning programme for April – so much to see and of course our fantastic Birthday celebration week. Happy Birthday to the Birks and thanks to the entire community that has made this happen. See you in the chummies! Charlotte Flower

Alice

a story of children & film Sunday 27 April

One of our Kitchen Team

Acclaimed critic and filmmaker Mark Cousins explores notions of childhood on film in this comprehensive and fascinating essay which premiered at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. Taking as his starting point self-shot footage of his niece and nephew playing, fighting and performing for the camera, he delves into a wealth of world cinema clips in order to examine how childhood has been conceived, imagined, represented and commented on through the medium of cinema.

Alice is one of our very hard working Kitchen Team. She is always smiling and happy at her work. As well as working at the cinema she spends time each week coaching at the Breadalbane Gymnastic sessions. Alice is working through her SVQ Level 2 at the cinema. Alice loves comedy films and can regularly be seen in the auditorium with her friends and family.

Atonement Tue 22 April

The Watermill Bookshop is pleased that our first sponsored ‘Film of the Book’ is a great film adaptation that keeps close to the structure of Ian McEwan’s outstanding 2001 novel. In 1935, 13 year old Briony, confused and envious of a sibling’s relationship, tells a lie with terrible consequences. Spanning 60 years of Briony’s life, the film captures the devastation of the 1940 Dunkirk evacuation and its shattering impact on all concerned. The film has superb performances from Keira Knightley and James McAvoy. The final devastating monologue delivered by Vanessa Redgrave does full justice to McEwan’s powerful writing.

Contains very strong language, bloody injuries and moderate sex. Director: Joe Wright Stars: Keira Knightley, James McAvoy, Romola Garai 118mins (2007) Cert 15

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Sat 19 April

To celebrate our 1st Birthday we have a week of special content. A first for The Birks Cinema, Blancanieves is a retelling of Snow White and there will be live musical accompaniment in the auditorium to make the most of this dark tale. The Little Birks will have their own special celebration with a screening of Brave followed by cake & an Easter Egg Hunt. Two Premiers exclusive to The Birks Cinema - Blue Ruin & Tracks - will be screened during our birthday week.

Berger’s silent, black-and-white take on the Grimms’ tale is perhaps the darkest, but also the most imaginative adaptation of this fairy tale. Snow White is now Carmen, born in 1920s Seville to a badly gored bullfighter whose wife dies in childbirth. Carmen becomes enslaved to her wicked stepmother, but having inherited her father’s skills, she escapes to joins a troupe of bullfighting dwarfs.

Our patron Alan Cumming (pictured below) has kindly agreed to choose four films each year which have a special meaning to him so we are launching our Patron’s Choice with Brief Encounter.

Contains bullfighting scenes and infrequent moderate sex references. Director: Pablo Berger Stars: Maribel Verdú, Daniel Giménez Cacho, Ángela Molina 102mins (2013) Cert 12 Silent.

Muppets most wanted

Jonathan Glazer’s third film following Sexy Beast and Birth, Under the Skin is the story of an alien in human form. Part road movie, part science fiction, part real, it’s a film about seeing our world through alien eyes. Glazer and Walter Campbell adapted the screenplay from a novel by Michel Faber. Scarlett Johansson stars.

The latest in one of the longest-running and most beloved film series sees the Muppets embark on a typically rambunctious world tour taking in Berlin, London and Madrid. But it’s not all music and mayhem as the gang inadvertently get embroiled in an international criminal conspiracy masterminded by the dastardly Constantine, who is also a dead ringer for Kermit.

yves saint laurent

captain america: the winters soldier 2d & 3D Fri 18 APRIL - THU 24 APRIL

The public life of Yves Saint Laurent was as extravagant as it was decadent, as a design prodigy and then the grand couturier of a fashion empire, he influenced fifty years of style - but few are familiar with the private life of the legend. In Pierre Thoretton’s L’AMOUR FOU, Pierre Berge, the man with which YSL shared four decades of his life and love, reflects on the equally extravagant history of their personal relationship. Framed around the 2009 auction of the priceless, elaborate art collection amassed by Yves and Pierre personally over several decades, this extraordinary documentary provides an unprecedented look at the life of the mythic personality, whose personal life matched his public for elegance, extravagance and passion. An Official Selection of the Toronto and Tribeca Film Festivals, L’AMOUR FOU is an un-missable film event for fans of documentary film and fashion die-hards alike.

Following the calamitous events of MARVEL AVENGERS ASSEMBLE, Steve Rogers, aka Captain America (Evans), is living quietly in Washington trying to adjust to modern life when he accidentally uncovers a murky conspiracy that endangers the entire planet. Working with fellow S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Natasha Romanoff aka the Black Widow (Johansson), and fending off assassins who threaten him at every turn, he finds himself confronting a new and terrible foe, the eponymous Winter Soldier (Stan). With some inspired new casting choices, including Robert Redford and Frank Grillo (ZERO DARK THIRTY), plus Marvel movie regulars such as Dominic Cooper and Samuel L. Jackson reprising their previous roles, sibling directors Anthony and Joe Russo have added fresh vitality to another stunning superhero adventure.

rio 2

noah

The sequel to 2011’s blockbuster, RIO 2 finds Jewel (Hathaway) persuading her hubby Blu (Eisenberg) that they and their brightly feathered family should expand their horizons and leave their city home for the Amazon jungle. Unsurprisingly, they have an ulterior motive, namely to track down other members of their rare Blue Macaw tribe, rumoured to exist deep in the rainforest. But their quest inevitably involves risks and complications, especially when Blu finds himself beak-to-beak with his fearsome father-in-law. Hugely talented young Brazilian director Carlos Saldanha (ICE AGE, ROBOTS) returns, along with regulars Jamie Foxx, Leslie Mann and Rodrigo Santoro voicing siblings Nico, Linda and Tulio respectively, and they’re joined by starry newcomers Andy Garcia, Bruno Mars and the venerable Rita Moreno in pivotal roles. Another crowd-pleasing animated comedy adventure.

For this truly epic version of the biblical story, writer-director Darren Aronofsky (BLACK SWAN, THE WRESTLER) applies his typically rich vision to Noah (Crowe) and the challenges he faces. Dire premonitions from Methuselah (Anthony Hopkins) convince Noah of God’s wrath towards non-believers, and so against all odds he and his family (Connelly, DARK WATER, Watson and Logan Lerman – reunited after THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER) build a vessel capable of saving enough animals, and a few humans, for a new and better world. But the fearsome if ultimately fearful Tubal Cain (Winstone) and his sceptical cohort determine that their efforts should be far from plain sailing. The film’s extraordinary special effects and topicality in a time of climate change elevate NOAH to a landmark movie experience.

blue Jasmine

Stranger by the lake

THU 17 APRIL

TUE 29 APRIL & WED 30 APRIL

Woody Allen returns with arguably a companion piece to such irony-tinged dramas as ALICE and HUSBANDS AND WIVES. Cate Blanchett shines as the self-obsessed and haughty Jasmine, who is forced to move in with her cheerfully workingclass sister (Hawkins) when her glitzy New York life comes to an abrupt end.

Ostensibly a straightforward thriller, albeit with a strong romantic undercurrent, Guiraudie’s Cannes-winning STRANGER BY THE LAKE also delivers a much deeper meditation on double identity, betrayal, casual lust and the allure of danger. Visiting a secluded lakeside beach where gay men swim, sunbathe and seek the occasional erotic encounter, the good-natured and relatively innocent Franck (Deladonchamps) falls for the altogether more complex Michel (Paou), whose interest in the other men frequenting the beauty spot goes disturbingly beyond the sexual. When Franck witnesses a tragic and not entirely accidental drowning, his feelings for Michel are called into question – but not in the way the audience might initially expect. The bucolic, summery settings, understated cinematography and naturalistic performances all give the film a beguiling power.

The Met Opera - La Boheme

Vikings live from the British museum

Sat 5 april

Thu 24 april

La Boheme is a swooning tale of young romance that eventually culminates in tragedy. When poet Rodolfo (Vittorio Grigolo) sets eyes on the beautiful Mimi (Anita Hartig), it’s love at first sight. Puccini’s classic opera gradually builds over four acts to a moving climax. Heralded, Oscarnominated film director Franco Zeffirelli (Romeo and Juliet) first staged his dazzling production of La Boheme at The Met in 1981. Now Zeffirelli’s sumptuous and lush vision returns to once again captivate audiences. Soprano Anita Hartig reprises her role as Mimi - a character she has also played at the Welsh National Opera and the Vienna State Opera. Famed Italian operatic tenor Vittorio Grigolo plays the passionate Rodolfo, while Stefano Ranzani conducts.

This special event offers an exclusive private view of the exhibition Vikings: Life and Legend, presented live in your local cinema. Introduced by British Museum Director Neil MacGregor and presented by historian and broadcaster Michael Wood, the exhibition will be brought to life by curators Gareth Williams and Tom Williams, alongside experts on Viking ships and swords, burial and beliefs, and language and legacy. With demonstrations, stunning close-up photography of the Viking objects in the exhibition and a live, torch-lit burial in the grounds of the Museum, Vikings Live will be a reminder of how the Vikings have shaped our modern lives.

Event Cinema the met opera: cosi fan tutte

roh presents: The winter’s tale

Music Director James Levine makes his long-awaited return to the Met podium to conduct Mozart’s beloved opera about testing the ties of love. The cast is filled with youthful Met stars: Susanna Phillips and Isabel Leonard who are the sisters Fiordiligi and Dorabella, and Matthew Polenzani and Rodion Pogossov who are their lovers, with Danielle de Niese as the scheming Despina.

The story follows the destruction of marriage through consuming jealousy, the abandonment of a child, and a seemingly hopeless love. Yet through remorse and regret – and after a statue comes miraculously to life – the ending is one of forgiveness and reconciliation.
