American Hustle

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom

Whacky FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Cooper) blackmails virtuoso con artists Irving Rosenfeld (Bale) and Sydney Prosser (Adams) into swindling corrupt politicians in this highly entertaining 1970s-set comedy thriller. Director/co-writer Russell (SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK) keeps allegiances shifting nicely, with Irving’s young wife Rosalyn (Oscar-winning PLAYBOOK star Lawrence) ultimately proving pivotal to the scam’s success. Immense good fun, but with an icy grip. Contains strobe lighting.

Idris Elba stars as Nelson Mandela in this biopic with magnificent authority. Mandela’s sense of injustice found its voice when he was a young lawyer taking part in nonviolent protest, but his activism of course led to 27 years of imprisonment. His politicisation was partly driven by his wife, Winnie (Harris), and director Chadwick spotlights that relationship while not shying away from the controversies it generated. In fact the human frailties only serve to emphasise Mandela’s impressive transition to an icon for democracy in a troubled country and around the world. Contains moderate violence, language, sex references and distressing scenes.

12 Years a Slave

The Railway Man

McQueen’s (HUNGER) highly anticipated third feature deals poetically and humanely with one of the thorniest aspects of American history. Based on Solomon Northup’s 1853 memoir of the same name, 12 YEARS A SLAVE stars Ejiofor as a well-to-do musician who is kidnapped and forced into slavery in the cotton fields of Louisiana. As the years go by, he is passed from owner to owner, arriving finally at the plantation of Edwin Epps (Fassbender). The relationship between Epps and Northup is perhaps
the heart of the film: the former represents the very worst of humanity, while the latter holds on to his faith, his heart going out to persecuted slave girl Patsey (Nyong’o). The result is the first must-see movie of the Oscar season, an intimate epic about freedom and resilience.

Based on the autobiography of the same name, THE RAILWAY MAN stars Colin Firth as Eric Lomax, a British World War II veteran who meets and falls for the spirited Patti (Kidman) while indulging in his passion: trains. Wedding bells follow, but soon Eric begins behaving oddly. Sensing that his past is troubling him, Patti turns to Eric’s friend Finlay (Skarsgård) and uncovers the harrowing story of their time in a Japanese POW camp. Can she
help Eric put the past to
rest – and will confronting one of his captors help or hinder his emotional recovery? The film seamlessly moves from romance to drama,
and has much to say about the madness of war. But it’s a positive watch full of faith in humanity, and to describe the ending as poignant is an understatement.

Using his most ingenious invention, the WABAC machine, Mr. Peabody and his adopted boy Sherman hurtle back in time to experience world-changing events first-hand and interact with some of the greatest characters of all time. August: Osage County (15) FRI 14 FEB - THUR 20 FEB

A fatal accident reunites the Weston clan in rural Oklahoma. Presided over by venom-spitting, drug-addled matriarch Violet (Streep), this is one highly dysfunctional family. Daughters Barbara (Roberts) and Karen (Lewis) match their mother for caustic barbs and self-absorption, while son Charles (Benedict Cumberbatch) is the weedy butt of Vi’s disdain. Also trading putdowns and dark revelations in this fantastically sardonic comedy drama are Ewan McGregor, Abigail Breslin (LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE), Dermot Mulroney (STOKER) and Chris Cooper (THE BOURNE IDENTITY). Director Wells, shooting from Tracy Letts’ adaptation of her own Pulitzer-winning play, keeps the verbal and physical action rolling at an engrossing pace. Seemingly channelling Elizabeth Taylor in WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?, Streep turns in a richly intense performance, with Roberts close behind in what is indeed a landmark for the entire ensemble. Cert 15, 121 mins. Director: John Wells. Starring: Meryl Streep, Ewan McGregor, Julia Roberts, Juliette Lewis. USA 2013.

Martin Scorsese capitalises on the mythology surrounding the financial world with this adaptation of the bestselling story of real-life rogue trader Jordan Belfort, played by his long-time collaborator Leonardo DiCaprio. Neither a celebration of greed nor a misappropriated warning – as WALL STREET became after a legion of young men took Gordon Gekko as a hero – this is a spectacular biopic of a man who epitomised an era. In the 1990s Belfort oversaw a scheme to manipulate stocks, which led to him raking in more than $200 million in personal wealth but also falling foul of the FBI. Like so many of Scorsese’s films, THE WOLF OF WALL STREET paints a picture of an outlaw life that’s appealing at first, but quickly becomes a nightmare – albeit one that features Lamborghinis, a chimpanzee on roller skates and the destruction of a 167ft yacht.

The Hunt

Moonride Kingdom

The rich seam of contemporary Scandinavian drama is rivetingly sustained by Vinterberg’s (FESTEN) disturbing account of a teacher falsely accused of sexual abuse by his best friend’s daughter, five-year-old Klara (the extraordinary Wedderkopp), and the mounting hysteria that ensues. Mikkelsen (CLASH OF THE TITANS) won Best Actor at Cannes 2012 for his performance as the initially incredulous but ultimately enraged Lucas, a newly divorced supply teacher who, despite Klara’s retraction, is vilified, ostracised and then arrested. The evidence against him is eventually exposed as patently phony, but that isn’t the end of his ordeal. As if in denial of their own guilt, the community continue to punish him and his loyal but conflicted son Marcus (Lasse Fogelstrøm), with violent consequences – leading to a masterful final twist.

Indie poster-boy Wes Anderson (RUSHMORE, THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS) returns to live-action filmmaking three years after FANTASTIC MR FOX and brings some old friends along for the ride, starting with longtime co-writer Roman Coppola (THE DARJEELING LIMITED). Set in the 1960s, MOONRISE KINGDOM follows 12-year-olds Sam and Suzy (Gilman and Hayward), who flee their cosy New England coastal town in an impulsive gesture of pre-teen romance. Suzy’s panic-stricken mother (McDormand, BURN AFTER READING) and seemingly unflustered father (Murray) toothcomb the region for their absent offspring with help from Sam’s Scout leader (Ed Norton) and the local sheriff (Willis). Meanwhile, a ferocious storm is gathering offshore and threatening to turn this quaint island community inside out. Contains moderate sex references.

Captain Phillips

FRI 21 & WED 26 FEB

TUE 11 FEB & THUR 13 FEB

Although he is perhaps best known for revamping the BOURNE franchise, Paul Greengrass (UNITED 93, BLOODY SUNDAY) also specialises in adrenaline-fuelled, flyon-the-wall thrillers that depict real-life flashpoints. Shot almost entirely at sea, his new feature, CAPTAIN PHILLIPS, is based on the true story of the MV Maersk Alabama, which in 2009 was hijacked by Somali pirates who took its captain hostage before making off in one of its lifeboats. Over four arduous days, the lifeboat was tracked by US navy warships, ultimately ending in a dramatic rescue attempt. Greengrass delivers his trademark unflinching, nerveshredding style, while Tom Hanks gives a truly great performance as the greying, goateed captain, facing off against the pirates and struggling to retain his essential decency in the face of his ordeal.

The fate of astronauts marooned in space might seem a familiar plotline, but as conceived by director Cuarón (CHILDREN OF MEN), it becomes a visual magnum opus as well as drama of the highest order. Clooney is wisecracking space veteran Kowalski, Bullock the rookie scientist Stone, and in a staggering 13-minute opening take we see her drifting helplessly from a wrecked space shuttle. Clooney is no stranger to the isolation of space – he starred in Soderbergh’s SOLARIS remake – but in GRAVITY his emotional reach extends even further as their battle for survival intensifies, and in her range of reactions to their worsening predicament, Bullock’s performance matches his. Above all, though, it’s the technical achievements of Cuarón and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki that will leave you reeling with amazement. Contains sustained moderate threat, disturbing images and strong language.

Cert 12A, 134 mins. Director: Paul Greengrass. Starring: Tom Hanks, Catherine Keener, Max Martini, Barkhad Abdi. USA 2013.

Cert 12A, 91m Director: Alfonso Cuarün Stars: Sandra Bullock, George Clooney

The three children of the Darling family receive a visit from Peter Pan, who takes them to Never Land, where an ongoing war between Peter’s gang of rag-tag runaways and the evil Pirate Captain Hook is taking place. Jumanji is a visually elaborate fantasy about an enchanted board game that opens a magical portal to a jungle universe. Alan’s only hope for freedom involves finishing the game, but this proves rather dangerous, as Judy, Peter, and Alan find themselvesrunning for their lives from huge rhinoceroses, evil monkeys, vicious lions, and other terrifying jungle beasts. Director Joe Johnston, whose special-effects background previously came to good use in Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, used groundbreaking computer imagery to simulate the thrills.

Charlie & The Chocolate Factory

The Muppets take Manhattan

The world is astounded when Willy Wonka, for years a recluse in his factory, announces that five lucky people will be given a tour of the factory, shown all the secrets of his amazing candy, and one will win a lifetime supply of Wonka chocolate. Nobody wants the prize more than young Charlie, but as his family is so poor that buying even one bar of chocolate is a treat, buying enough bars to find one of the five golden tickets is unlikely in the extreme. But in movieland, magic can happen. Charlie, along with four somewhat odious other children, get the chance of a lifetime and a tour of the factory. Along the way, mild disasters befall each of the odious children, but can Charlie beat the odds?

Jim Henson’s Muppets find themselves in Manhattan yearning to get a musical on Broadway in this charming film that also chides show business and its foibles. Kermit the Frog has just put together a successful variety show at Danhurst college (probably somewhere between Amherst and Dartmouth), and although he would like to mount it on Broadway so he would have a hit and be able to marry Miss Piggy, he cannot find backers. The Muppets are then forced to take jobs to support themselves, and it is while working as a waiter that Kermit meets the friendly Jennie (Juliana Donald). Jennie is the daughter of the owner of the restaurant and a source of great jealousy for Miss Piggy, who does not like competition. With stunning musical numbers involving a hundred or so Muppets and onscene locations in New York City, the film is impressive in its merging of technical achievements and acting.

Live Events Don Giovanni WED 12 FEB

Mozartís Don Giovanni, first staged in 1787, offers boundless scope for directors. Kasper Holten offers a new interpretation that foregrounds the theme of imagination. Don Giovanni is cast as an artist who seduces an endless stream of women through his ability to create wonderful illusions. His catalogue of sexual conquests is a vain attempt to escape his own mortality and comes at a high price. Holten presents an exciting visual universe that ranges from colourful comedy to exhilarating drama. Set designs by Es Devlin ñ who was most recently at Covent Garden with Les Troyens ñ and costume designs by Anja Vang Kragh (Stella McCartney, John Galliano, Christian Dior) complete an impressive creative team. The production highlights the beauty and invention of Mozartís dazzling score, which ranges from gorgeous arias and dramatic duets to the brilliant layering of dance melodies that bring Act I to a virtuoso close. SAT 15 FEB When a mysterious stranger (Juliette Binoche) and her young child arrive in a tranquil French town in 1959, nobody could have imagined the impact the striking Vianne and her spirited daughter would have on this old fashioned buttoned down community. Within days Vianne opens a very unusual chocolate shop, filled with mouth-watering confections. Her uncanny, almost magical ability to perceive her customers’ private desires and satisfy them with just the right confection coaxes the villagers to abandon themselves to temptation and happiness. Director Lasse Hallstrom has assembled a stellar cast in this delightfully fantastic tale of forbidden desire, sensuality, repressed love, and above all – chocolate. Binoche radiates as Vianne, exuding warmth and vitality. The infectious sense of fun and joie de vivre abides throughout.

In this astonishing film, Sorrentino (IL DIVO) combines Rossellini’s social commentary with Fellini’s visual opulence. Taxi Driver SAT 22 FEB

TAXI DRIVER, recently revived in an immaculate new print, grips like a vice. Nursing various resentments, probably fuelled by a fear of social and sexual failure, Travis Bickle’s (De Niro) attention turns to Iris (Foster), a 14-year-old prostitute, and he makes it his mission to save her. The film’s expressionist images eloquently mirror Bickle’s sense of the impoverished, tawdry, sometimes menacing New York of the mid70s as a hell-on-earth. Scorsese’s Palme d’Or winner remains one of the defining American movies of that decade, not only for its cinephile bravura flair but also for the way it points to the troubled urban mood of those times by locating Bickle’s psychotic rage in his ill-concealed racism, misogyny and anxieties concerning all-round impotence. The Innocents TUE 25 FEB

From the very opening – the sounds of first a small girl and then a nightingale in song, followed by a shot of hands in tremulous prayer – an unholy alliance is vividly evoked, of childhood play, nocturnal longing and fearful superstition. Hired with little ado by their uncaring, absent uncle, Miss Giddens (Kerr) arrives at Bly House to oversee the welfare of orphans Miles and Flora; after the housekeeper mentions her predecessor’s fate, the governess, well-meaning but hardly wellversed in the ways of the world, becomes convinced her charges may have been corrupted, even possessed... Much has been made of Freddie Francis’s lambent black and white ‘Scope images, darkly suggestive of sinister visitations and immanent horror – ‘O Rose, thou art sick’ – while Wilfrid Shingleton’s production design and Georges Auric’s music add to the febrile atmosphere. But it’s the rich ambiguity, embodied in the cadences of the acting and enhanced by the use of natural sound, that makes the film as psychologically astute as it is deliciously disturbing. – Geoff Andrew Cert 12A, 99m Director: Jack Clayton Stars: Deborah Kerr, Peter Wyngarde, Megs Jenkins

The Summit

SUN 2 & WED 5 FEB In August 2008, 18 climbers reached the summit of K2. Fortyeight hours later, 11 people were dead. What happened on that fateful day has never been fully resolved. The Summit uses found footage, realistic reenactments, and interviews with survivors, as it zigzags back and forth in time, interweaving multiple narrative threads to piece together one of the deadliest days in mountain-climbing history. Through breathtaking cinematography, director Nick Ryan creates a tension-filled experience that will have you on the edge of your seat. “It will never be completely clear what happened at the beginning of August 2008 as climbers approached the summit of K2. Through brilliant, convincing photography, the director succeeds in creating a mosaic of scenes from the stories of those who survived, but there remains an empty space for the eleven stories swallowed up by the mountain. ”- Silvo Karo Cert TBC, 95m Director: Nick Ryan Stars: Christine Barnes, Hoselito Bite, Marco Confortola

Dark Days MON 17 FEB

Marc Singer’s film shows an extraordinary world that exists below the streets of Manhattan. In the perpetual darkness of the tunnels, people make their homes. They build shacks out of cardboard and lumber, and fill them with furniture dragged down from above. Tapping into city lines, they have light and water, and many have stoves, refrigerators and TV sets. Cert 15, 80m Director: Marc Singer Stars: Marc Singer
