NOTES FROM A HIGHLAND CINEMA...

Restaurant Café Bar

Welcome to our March brochure. Spring is on its way and here at The Birks Cinema that means another raft of excellent new releases for your enjoyment and edification. The Coen Brothers are back - Smart, funny, and profoundly melancholic, Inside Llewyn Davis finds the Coen brothers in fine form. Matthew McConaughey stars in The Dallas Buyers Club, critics are calling it his best ever performance. Spike Jonze is back as writer and director in the just about sci-fi HER. Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Scarlett Johansson and Amy Adams HER is a sweetly soulful narrative about relationships in the modern world. Jim Jarmusch writes and directs Only Lovers Left Alive starring the mesmerising Tom Hiddleston and the ever versatile Tilda Swinton, both bringing an effortless cool to the vampyric proceedings, but when you peel back the layers of style you find a foundation of rampant emotion and desperate longing. Wes Anderson is back with The Grand Budapest Hotel, a plethora of famous faces and Anderson’s very individual style bring a tale of theft and recovery of a priceless Renaissance painting and the battle for an enormous family fortune to life. Also screening this month The Invisible Woman starring Ralph Fiennes, Robo Cop, The Monuments Men and The Book Thief. Event cinema sees the return of The Met Opera and Bolshoi Ballet this month. With two NT: War Horse Encores, Goldfrapp & Elton John there’s bound to be something for everyone. Inside Llewyn Davis (2013)

THE LEGO MOVIE 2D & 3D (2014)

Rags to riches, riches to rags – these are the familiar trajectories of films about professional musicians. But in their brilliant 16th feature, the Coen brothers offer their own unique take on the genre. Greenwich Village, 1961. The emerging folk scene has yet to produce a star, although it does not want for talent, notably singer-songwriter Llewyn Davis. But it’s hard to stay positive when your career is flailing, you’ve outstayed your welcome on all your friends’ couches, and you may have got your best mate’s girlfriend pregnant. The folk-scene setting offers rich opportunity for the directors to flex their passion for music, and regular collaborator T-Bone Burnett arranges a soundtrack of traditional and original compositions that gives O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? a run for its money.

In the Lego universe, an ordinary mini-figure named Emmet is mistaken as being the Special (the greatest Master Builder who can save the Lego universe).

Fri 28 Feb - Thu 6 Mar

Fri 7 Mar - wed 12 Mar

With the help of an old wizard named Vitruvius, and a tough young woman named Wyldstyle, Batman, Uni-Kitty, Benny, and a pirate named Metalbeard, Emmet will have to unlearn everything he saw in the instructions and discover the power of imagination to defeat the evil Lord Business, a tyrant who is bent on destroying the Lego universe on Taco Tuesday and recreating it as he sees fit by gluing it together. THE MONUMENTS MEN (2014)

DALLAS BUYERS CLUB (2013)

Fri 7 Mar - Thur 13 Mar

Fri 7 Mar - Thur 13 Mar

Set in the late ’80s and based on a true story, DALLAS BUYERS CLUB sees Matthew McConaughey play Ron Woodroof, a carefree party animal whose life is rocked to the core when he contracts HIV from a one-night stand.

Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history, The Monuments Men is an action drama focusing on an unlikely World War II platoon, tasked by Franklin D Roosevelt with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners.

As Ron faces up to his condition, he begins to explore the medical options available to him, finding out that not only is the US government actively preventing HIV patients from accessing certain treatments, but it is also colluding with the pharmaceutical industry to prescribe expensive and harmful ones.

It would be an impossible mission: with the art trapped behind enemy lines, and with the German army under orders to destroy everything as the Reich fell. How could these men - seven museum directors, curators, and art historians, all more familiar with Michelangelo than the M-1 - possibly hope to succeed?

There are shades of ERIN BROCKOVICH in this David and Goliath story, but it’s a measure of his brilliance that director JeanMarc Vallée keeps us guessing how it will play out. And McConaughey will surely be clearing some shelf space this awards season for a performance that will move viewers to tears, without resorting to sentiment or ever asking them for pity.

Contains moderate violence, bloody injury detail and scenes of smoking. Director: George Clooney Stars: Matt Damon, George Clooney, Cate Blanchett 118 mins Cert 12A

Contains strong language, sex, sex references and drug use. Director: Jean-Marc Vallée Stars: Matthew McConaughey, Jared Leto, Jennifer Garner 117 mins Cert 15

ONCE UPON A TIME IN ANATOLIA (2011) *

AMERICAN HUSTLE (2013)

Mon 10 Mar

Tue 11 Mar & Wed 12 Mar

An FBI agent (Bradley Cooper) blackmails a pair of con artists (Christian Bale, Amy Adams) into swindling corrupt politicians. Shifting allegiances, scams within scams and outrageous 1970s coiffure all aid this highly entertaining comedy thriller.

This supremely intelligent, elegantly crafted noir policier from acclaimed Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan (THREE MONKEYS, CLIMATES) unfolds atmospherically on the Anatolian steppes, where a group of detectives search in the dead of night for the body of a murder victim. The man who has confessed to the killing is brought along to locate the body, but as dawn beckons the men find themselves stuck on what appears to be a hopeless mission. Deserved winner of the Grand Prix at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, ONCE UPON A TIME IN ANATOLIA is a complex crime drama that burns slowly, keeping its cards close to its chest and giving plenty of room to breathe to Gökhan Tiryaki’s exquisite cinematography. World cinema doesn’t get much better than this.

12 YEARS A SLAVE (2013)

PHILOMENA (2013)

Based on Solomon Northup’s 1853 memoir of the same name, 12 YEARS A SLAVE stars Ejiofor as a well-to-do musician who is kidnapped and forced into slavery in the cotton fields of Louisiana, ending up on the plantation of the vicious Edwin Epps (Fassbender). The result is the first must-see movie of the Oscar season, an intimate epic about freedom and resilience.

An Oscar-worthy Judi Dench plays the titular character seeking out the illegitimate son taken from her whilst she served in one of Ireland’s notorious convents. In this she is aided by journalist Martin Sixsmith (Coogan), whose dogged tactics lead them to a series of superb plot twists. Stephen Frears (THE QUEEN) draws remarkable performances from this odd couple, whose earthy chemistry, coupled with a sharp and very funny script, make PHILOMENA a true delight.

THE WOLF OF WALL STREET (2013) Mon 24 Mar & wed 26 Mar

Martin Scorsese capitalises on the mythology surrounding the financial world with this adaptation of the bestselling story of real-life rogue trader Jordan Belfort, played by his long-time collaborator Leonardo DiCaprio. In the 1990s Belfort oversaw a scheme to manipulate stocks, which led to him raking in more than $200 million in personal wealth but also falling foul of the FBI. Like so many of Scorsese’s films, THE WOLF OF WALL STREET paints a picture of an outlaw life that’s appealing at first, but quickly becomes a nightmare – albeit one that features Lamborghinis, a chimpanzee on roller skates and the destruction of a 167ft yacht. Contains very strong language, strong sex and hard drug use. Director: Martin Scorsese Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Matthew McConaughey 180 mins Cert 18

Sat 29 Mar

It’s been 12 long years since Kermit and the gang’s last big-screen outing, 1999’s MUPPETS FROM SPACE. Now everyone’s favourite fuzzy creatures are firmly back where they belong, and they’ve brought some new faces along for the ride. In Smalltown, Gary (Segel) and his brother Walter (a muppet) have long dreamed of meeting their Muppet Show heroes, and they set off on a pilgrimage to the famous Muppet Theater in Los Angeles along with Gary’s girlfriend Mary (Adams). To their horror, however, the theatre is rundown and in the process of being sold to a shady oil tycoon named Tex Richman (Cooper) who plans to demolish the site. After tracking down Kermit, our plucky trio convince him to get the band back together for one epic fund-raising show.

The London International Animation Festival proudly showcases the whole spectrum of creative animation, showing that animation is for everyone... Founded in 2003, LIAF aims to dispel the popular misconception that animation is just cartoons for kids by screening the broadest possible range of intelligent, entertaining and provocative current films on offer from all around the world as well as retrospectives and specialised sessions from countries and animators who don’t normally elicit such attention. 70m Cert U

ROH - The Sleeping Beauty

Jonas Kaufmann stars in the title role of Massenet’s sublime adaptation of Goethe’s revolutionary and tragic romance, opposite Sophie Koch as Charlotte. The new production is directed and designed by Richard Eyre and Rob Howell, the same team that created the Met’s recent hit staging of Carmen. Rising young maestro Alain Altinoglu conducts.

Marius Petipa’s classic 19th-century choreography is combined with newly created sections by Frederick Ashton, Anthony Dowell and Christopher Wheeldon. The ballet contains many memorable moments, from the iconic Rose Adagio, when Aurora meets her four royal suitors, to the vigorous hunting dances and the famous waltz for Aurora and her Prince. Throughout, Pyotr Il’yich Tchaikovsky’s score conveys passion and intensity.

Bolshoi - Marco Spada Sun 30 mar

Although no one has ever seen him, the misdeeds of bandit Marco Spada are notorious. Even his lovely daughter, Angela, has no idea of Spada’s secret double life. He’s raised her in his castle lair, while conducting his brazen plundering right under the nose of the Governor. Angela, meanwhile, has become romantically obsessed with Prince Frederici. But she’s distraught to learn that he is already betrothed to Marchesa Sampietri - the Governor’s daughter! Nineteenth century French composer Daniel François Esprit Auber’s rarely performed ballet in three acts has been recreated specially for the Bolshoi by choreographer Pierre Lacotte. This glorious production is both technically and dramatically demanding. It features complex choreography, lead roles created for each of the five principals, several changes in scenery, and the participation of nearly all the Corps de Ballet. THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER (1955) Sun 23 Mar & Thur 27 mar

Harry Powell marries and murders widows for their money, believing he is helping God do away with women who arouse men’s carnal instincts. Arrested for auto theft, he shares a cell with condemned killer Ben Harper and tries to get him to reveal the whereabouts of the $10,000 he stole. Only Ben’s nine-year-old son, John and four-year-old daughter, Pearl know the money is in Pearl’s doll and they have sworn to their father to keep this secret. After Ben is executed, Preacher goes to Cresap’s Landing to court Ben’s widow, Willa. He overwhelms her with his Scripture quoting, sermons and hymns, and she agrees to marry him. On their wedding night he tells her they will never have sex because it is sinful. When the depressed, confused, guilty woman catches him trying to force Pearl to reveal the whereabouts of the money, she is resigned to her fate but the children manage to escape downriver, with Preacher following close behind. Passed ‘12’ for theme of threat to children. Director: Charles Laughton Stars: Robert Mitchum, Shelley Winters, Lillian Gish 92m Cert 12

DIRTY DANCING (1987) Sat 29 Mar

In many ways, a routine teen-flick with its ‘60s setting, sex, rock ’n’ roll and interfering stereotypical adults; but after many movies trading on the oats-sowing traumas of male adolescence, here’s one that looks at a young girl’s sexual adventures in a serious manner. College-bound ‘Baby’ (Grey), on holiday with her parents at a Borscht-Belt hotel, meets the resort’s resident dancer (Swayze) and ends up taking his injured partner’s place in a show. This involves being coached to professional standard in just a few days, leading to some movingly coy scenes as the two fall in love and into bed. A safe combination of laughs, tears and an improbably happy ending, but sensitive performances, a burning rock ’n’ roll soundtrack and sleazy choreography carry the day. (Time Out Film Guide) Contains moderate sex references. Director: Emile Ardolino Stars: Jennifer Grey, Patrick Swayze, Cynthia Rhode 100 mins Cert 12

KISS THE WATER (2013) Sun 9 Mar

Kiss the Water is a sensual, hypnotic and haunting movie, weaving seamlessly between cinematic documentary and hand-painted animation, much the same way Megan Boyd twirled bits of colourful fur and exotic feathers round a tiny, sharp metal hook. Megan Boyd “Whose fabled expertise at tying enchantingly delicate fishing flies put her works in museums and the hands of collectors around the world and prompted Queen Elizabeth II to award her the British Empire Medal. From tiny strands of hair she made magic: the classic Scottish flies like the Jock Scott, Silver Doctor and Durham Ranger. And the fly named after her, the Megan Boyd - a nifty blue and black number famous for attracting salmon at the height of summer, when the water is low, hot, and dead…” Contains one use of mild language and a sex reference. Director: Eric Steel Stars: Hettie Cunningham, Harry Davidson, Stewart Graham 79 mins Cert PG

TIM’S VERMEER (2013) Tue 1 April

Tim Jenison, a Texas based inventor, attempts to solve one of the greatest mysteries in all art: How did 17th century Dutch Master Johannes Vermeer (“Girl with a Pearl Earring”) manage to paint so photo-realistically - 150 years before the invention of photography? The epic research project Jenison embarks on to test his theory is as extraordinary as what he discovers. Spanning a decade, Jenison’s adventure takes him to Delft, Holland, where Vermeer painted his masterpieces; on a pilgrimage to the North coast of Yorkshire to meet artist David Hockney; and eventually even to Buckingham Palace, to see the Queen’s Vermeer. Contains one use of strong language. Director: Teller Stars: Colin Blakemore, David Hockney, Tim Jenison 80 mins Cert PG
