October 2021 Dear Reader It has been over 18 months since our last issue. The virus struck the World and Mill Hill has been on some form of lockdown ever since. We could not meet properly and events stopped and businesses closed and went on furlough. A local newspaper can’t function if everything is closed ! We are delighted to be back and have big plans for the forthcoming years having had a year to look at past editions and successes. The area has grown together in the Covid pandemic and many living locally have been forced to explore local food - local shops, local parks and walking areas. So in many ways it has strengthened the area. We are going to start again as we did back over 4 years ago with a small edition. Many of our writers will be coming back and many new ones as well. If you want to write for us then please send us an article. Our events listings are free. We want to publicise your events. In 2019 over 5,000 a month were reading Mill Hill Today. Up from the original 3,000 when we launched. We know it may take time to get back there but please share this on Facebook Next Door - and other places. We are the ONLY monthly noticeboard for the area. The only Mill Hill newspaper and therefore a great place to disseminate information. Stay Safe Mill Hill. Later in the year we will provide a diary of what happened in the “ Year of the Virus” but for now we are just delighted to be coming back to say hello ! The Mill Hill Today Team

NEWS OPENINGS and CLOSURES ON BROADWAY

MILL HILL NEIGHBOURHOOD FORUM ENDS

Since March 2020 there have been several changes on the Broadway.

The Neighbourhood Forum failed to gain its 5 year extension at a meeting just after lockdown.

Bobs Cafe closed and has been replaced by Gail’s Bakery. The Bank Food and Drink opened the largest restaurant on the street in the old HSBC site. The oldest food shop Red Rooster was replaced by Gourmet Grill.

Although every local organisation and business in the area supported this extension due to the excellent work the Forum had done it was opposed by a campaign organised by Roger Tichborne and Richard Logue of the Liberal Democrats - both former Committee members of the Forum. They complained about the Markets on Broadway and other political issues.

There are still some empty units - Leyla, Barclays Bank. and the Nat West.. However, compared to most High Streets the Broadway has maintained all of its chains and added some independents during the virus. The support of local people has been instrumental in this good news story. We will review the new restaurants and takeaways in future editions.

RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION BROCHURE In some good news the annual brochure from the Residents Association should be delivered to most houses over the next few weeks. It sets out the work the Association has done in 2020 with the virus. In addition in a first for the area they have added a small directory of Home Businesses which run from people’s houses in the area. Over 200 and proves that Mill Hill has probably the highest number of local entrepreneurs of any area in London. The RA has also set up a LITTER PICKERS group for Mill Hill East and is working with schools around the area. If you have not received a copy contact the Association via their Website.

The result of this is that there will be no more markets on the Broadway. No more festivals in the area. No more hanging baskets on the Broadway and residents no longer have a professional voice in planning decisions. We asked the Liberals to comment but received no reply. A sad result for the area which will be remembered in the 2022 elections.

NEW FEMALE EDITOR FOR MILL HILL GUIDE The long established Mill HIll Guide has announced that they have a new editor for 2022.

Mellissa Fox will be editing the next two editions. Mellissa is a ballet dancer and artist who is excited to bring a more youthful look to the Guide which is going to come out in January

SPORT SARACENS MEN MARKED THEIR RETURN TO THE GALLAGHER PREMIERSHIP WITH A FANTASTIC 26-9 VICTORY OVER BRISTOL BEARS AT ASHTON GATE. The victory, which was built on a relentless defence gave Mark McCall’s side the ideal start to the season with a memorable win. Seven penalties from Man of the Match Alex Lozowski put the Men in Black en route to the win, and it was sealed late on as Alex Lewington scored the only try of the match. In a tight opening half with nothing between the sides it was Bristol who took an early lead thanks to Callum Sheedy’s penalty with just five minutes on the clock after a spell of kicking from both sides ended in Sarries holding on to the ball. Alex Lozowski responded straight away with a longrange penalty to open his account for the season as the visitors looked to build in to the match. Bristol then enjoyed a spell of dominance and two penalties from the half way line in quick succession gave them a 9-3 advantage with 20 minutes played. Elliott Obayotinbo and Billy Vunipola the combined to stop a certain try in defence, which proved to be crucial as half time approached. Charlies Piutau stepped past a number of defenders before releasing Ioan Lloyd on the wing, however a last ditch tackle pulled him in to touch. Sarries then stepped it up before the break, and two huge scrums won resulted in two more penalties for Lozowski to bring his side level and send the teams down the tunnel locked at 9-9. McCall’s men started the second half brilliantly and forced the Bears in to two errors which gave the visitors the perfect start. A massive scrum gave Lozowski another long-range attempt which he was successful with to put his side in the lea for the first time in the match just five minutes after the restart. Straight from kick off another penalty followed after Aled Davies’ inch-perfect box kick, and this time from even further out Lozowski was on the money as the lead grew to 15-9 almost immediately. The Bears then looked for a way back in to the lead as Harry Thacker flew through the middle of the defence and then a sustained period of pressure followed, but the well drilled Sarries defence proved too strong and they soaked every phase up before winning a much-needed penalty.

n the hour mark another penalty came the way of the Men in Black after a half break from Alex Lewington had the home defence on the back foot, and just as he had done all night Lozowski again ensured that the fourth officials raised their flags to push the lead out to more than a converted try. More defensive sets followed, and in the same pattern that had followed in the second half after the Bristol attack was stopped Sarries earned a penalty. Lozowski’s seventh of the evening meant the North Londoners were now 21-9 ahead. The result was then put to bed with 10 minutes remaining as Lewington dived over for the first try of the match Oto the delight of the travelling supporters. A scrum deep in the Bristol 22 saw the ball spun to Lozowski who grubbered across to the winger who was in acres of space and acrobatically dotted down, extending the lead to 17 points. Bristol had one more attack and came within inches of crossing the line, but on a night that belonged to the Saracens defence they wouldn’t be defeated and confirmed an impressive victory.
