info@millhillbroadway.co.uk ARTS | FEATURES | COMMUNITY NEWS |SPORTS | PROPERTY Welcome to the March editio of Mill Hill Today. At present the Country is braced for a possible Coronavirus outbreak but as we go to press there is still no sign of the virus in North West London and less than 40 cases in the UK as a whole. We hope that it stays away because our local economy is fragile after the years of recession and rises in business rates. Next month we should be able to report on this. Shops have closed sadly on the Broadway in February but the major news has been the preparation of one of the biggest empty units the HSBC site for a new restaurants/ bar with late night opening on weekends. This will be a massive boost to the street’s night-time economy. At present from around 9.30p.m it is empty and this could help more restaurants/bars stay open longer. Not much else going on in Mill Hill in the last month but as the summer approaches it will get busier and please send us your news and photos so that we can publish them. Enjoy March and stay healthy.

NEWS LONDIS SUPEMARKET OPENS In February the ROTA EXPRESS supermarket has joined the LONDIS chain of convenience stores. This is a great boost for this side of the Broadway because it now has offers comparible to Tesco and Iceland backed by one of the biggest small grocery chains in the UK. Why not visit and check out the offers. Italian Wine from £3.99 and plenty of chocolate at £1 and varieties of popcorn at just £1 for two bags ! As well as loads of staples and household.

LAST BANK IN MILL HILL CLOSES The last major bank is shutting its doors in early June. Barclays announced this last week. This means all the large branches ojn the Broadway have now gone. Customers and traders can pay in cash via the Post Office counters.

ROUND UP February has been a quiet month. Oxfam are looking for volunteers to join their friendly team - go into the shop if you have a couple of hours a week spare. This helps the poor of the world and also provides an excellent shop on the Broadway with superb nearly new clothing and plenty of new Fair Trade coffee and chocolate and greetings cars. Call in and see for yourself.

LOCAL TRADERS AND GREEN LOBBY ATTACK THE LOCAL COUNCILLORS FOR UNDERMINING THE LOCAL COMMUNITY PLAN & GREENBELT February saw a bitter row break out on various social media outlets on Facebook and Twitter. In July last year the incredibly popular Neighbourhood Forum led by John Gillett lost its designation because of the three Tory councillors deciding to pull their support from the Forum. Since then the Forum has been trying to recruit a quorum in order to finish the Neighbourhood Plan. Since last July the work that the Forum did in promoting the Broadway - organising festivals - Markets - and finding new tenants for businesses using their links and getting grants for the area has stopped. The effect is clear to see - closing shops - unhappy residents - unhappy traders. Yet the plan and the forum are still not yet designated. A spokesperson for the local Traders said that it is “Appalling that the Forum has been taken away from us by these Tory councillors who have no regard for how hard it is for us on the High Street. We demand the Forum is reinstated so that we can get through these next few difficult years. Coronavirus may well be the blow that finishes off several businesses. The Forum has been incredibly positive and led to a very high occupancy of over 95% on Broadway for instance that has now fallen. “ Local residents are also not happy and expressed their anger on Inside Mill Hill about the plan being sabotaged in order for the Greenbelt to be encroached upon. Obviously, no one can prove that the Tory councillors are in league with developers but it does seem strange in the year that many housing and power developments are about to hit planning that the Neighbourhood Plan has been undermined and is now not in place to help protect our area. We will be watching developments and tried to contact both the Neighbourhood Forum and the Councillors for a comment but so far neither seem willing to say why they are in deadlock and why the area is being let down. Almost certainly the local residents will blame the local Tory councillors for any developments that happen in the area - and if they believe that these Councillors refused to support residents and the community in bringing in a local plan it will surely lead to their defeat in the next election. This newspaper is non political but when it comes to protecting our area’s unique beauty we will speak out. Pentavia is likely to be bad but at least it is on brownfield next to the motorway. The Greenbelt is under threat and without the Neighbourhood Forum and their plan and expertise we could lose much of it to huge developments in the coming years. Time for our councillors to stand up and represent us all.

There are still a number of empty units on the Broadway and with a new year - new support for retailers from the Government this is a good time for entrepreneurs to invest in Mill Hill. With the large housing developments at IBSA House - Pentavia - MHE - Barratts - Ridgeway all coming on line in the next 5 years the local economy is going to grow by a third. There will not be enough retail space by 2025 in Mill HIll so this is the time to get in before there is nothing left. We predict by 2027 no units will be empty long term.

YOUNG BARNET ORGANIST SHINES IN CITY RECITAL | Review

Each year Catherine Ennis, the acclaimed organist, goes around the UK to choose severa young organists to play at St Lawremce Jewry in the City in their regular Tuesday lunchtime programme for March. This year young Barnet organist DREW SELLIS from Queen Elizabeth School was one of the lucky few to play the new and beautiful Klauss organ. In a programme featuring two young organists Drew was joined by Elli-Mae Mclone from Doncaster to play a programme of fairly familiar organ oieces. Elli programme showed a great use of the registration and in her three pieces she showed why she has been offered an organ scholarship at St Edmundsbury Cathedral. Drew likewise showed why he has been offered a scholarship at Jesus College, Cambridge University. He played two preudes by Bach and Brahms before finishing with a highly accomplished reading of the well known Cesar Franck Piece Heroique fully showing off the reeds and power of the organ. A fantastic recital by two young people destined for great things in the world of organ and Cathedral music. Fantastic to see a Barnet youngster involved when we dont have any major Cathedral or Abbey or college, Congratulations to him.

THE ONLY WAY IS DAGENHAM The Launch Night of MHMTC’s Made In Dagenham will be on Monday 6 April at 8pm at Hartley Hall. The event will introduce members old and new to the show, including a script reading, a whirl through the show’s amazing score, and a glimpse into some of the fabulous dance routines that have already been set – it’s not to be missed! We will also have refreshments, so if anyone is interested in coming along, please email info@mhmtc.co.uk. Inspired by a true story and based on the hit movie, Made In Dagenham is the uplifting British musical comedy about friendship, love and the importance of fighting for what’s right. Essex, 1968. Like millions of other working women, each morning Rita O’Grady tries to get her husband out of bed, get the kids off to school and get to work at the factory on time. But life is about to change forever when it’s announced that the girls in the stitching room of Ford’s Dagenham car plant will have their pay grade dropped to ‘unskilled’. Quickly drawing on a strength she never knew she had, Rita leads her friends in a battle against the might of Ford and the corruption of the Union supposed to protect them. As the girls’ inspiring journey goes further than any of them could have imagined, and while the pressure is too much for some, can Rita keep up the fight and not destroy the happy home she’s worked so hard for? Funny, touching and timeless, Made In Dagenham shows how ordinary people can do extraordinary things when they stand together. Made In Dagenham is written by Richard Bean (book), David Arnold (music) and Richard Thomas (lyrics).

MILL HILL RUGBY CLUB

by Our Sports Editor

HUGO WEBSTER

HUGE news – Club Development – Watch this space! At Mill Hill Rugby Club we are always looking to better ourselves, for our players, our members, and for the community around us. Over the 2018 summer we installed brand new windows and shutters which have brightened the club both literally and aesthetically, and along with the fresh paint job and new lighting on the inside we can defiantly be proud to show off our club house. However, this is nothing on what is to come… What we can tell you so far: We are looking to completely redevelop one half of the club house, creating amazing new facilities, that of a high-level club, with exceptional potential, not just for our members but for the wider community. Watch this space for future developments! (Excuse the pun) As for the professionals: Saracens kick off their premiership title defence on the 19th October at Allianz park – as always throughout the season we welcome all to come in to the club pre-post and for those without tickets, during the game! We’re also blessed this year with the rugby world cup taking place in Tokyo, Japan! Look over our social media for which games we’ll be showing as it is time-zone sensitive! In summary; plenty of new horizons, lots of rugby to be played and in many forms, and most importantly we welcome all of Mill Hill and wider community to join us in making our next season one of the greatest. We look forward to seeing you all soon. As always – All are welcome at Mill Hill Rugby Football Club!
