NEW BUSINESS NETWORK FOR TRADERS IN MILL HILL

There used to be a very active Broadway Traders group. This was run by Lawrence from Mill Hill Wines and provided the excellent basket posts and also contributed to other projects on the Broadway. Sadly it stopped over 10 years ago and since then there has been no joint initiatives from the traders on Broadway or anywhere else in Mill Hill. From September this will change because a new Traders group for the whole of Mill Hill is being launched in Mill Hill on September 11th. The project is to be started under the Neighbourhood Forum until is has become self sustaining. John Gillett the Chair of the MHNF has written to all traders to say “Town Centres are struggling throughout the UK. The ones that will do more than survive are those that work together with common goals and objectives to develop the compelling set of offerings which encourage more people to visit, more frequently.” The new group will work on creating a great Christmas light display in the Town Square - and main shopping streets, will run promotional campaigns together on soclai media and in print, and will also take over once again the Hanging Baskets on the Broadway. Regular meetings to network and get cheaper deals by working together will also be held around Mill Hill. Since the old association stopped there are many who have wanted a new one. At last this will happen and hopefully it will help retain and attract high quality shops and restaurants etc to Mill Hill and make our shopping areas the best in North London. Beautiful!

We love our special Mill Hill.

Mill Hill Litter Pic ers

But it can look quite messy with all the litter that has been carelessly thrown about. Ugly ‘dirt spots’ build up over time and the council’s resources are too stretched tokdeal with them. So some of us Mill Hill residents get together for just one hour a month to clear the area of litter.

It’s very social and we have a lot of fun together - grabbers and bags provided! And a well-deserved cuppa after. Best of all is that we’re making a difference; incidents of littering has dramatically reduced and many of the really bad spots have remained tidy.

SUSPECTED ARMED ROBBERY AT THE PHONE SHOP ! (Latest)

NEWS IN SHORT

The month started on August 1st with a dramatic incident on Broadway as we reported last month. At around 9.30am a man entered the PHONE SHOP and tried to make off with a pile of mobile phones in a bag. He was wearing a helmet. Luckily a brave member of staff chased him and grabbed the bag back. The would be robber drove off in his car. The police have now revealed the car had false plates. Police were on the scene all morning and police photographers. Anyone with information or video or phone photos please contact the local police. We have no update about this event as we go to press.

August has been a quiet month for news. The Litter Pickers took part in two picks one with Colindale at MOntrose Park and their regular first saturday of the month. Barnet Council have provided Litter Pickers and bags to the group and collect the bags after sessions. Do join i.

AVAILABLE PROPERTY ON THE BROADWAY ( From www.millhillbroadway.co.uk )

We all want to see great shops and cafes on our High Street - so please share this article with friends who run such businesses or call into their current shop and show them this article and tell them you would love to see them come to Mill Hill. Together we can bring the best shops and restaurants to our area. We need to be pro-active in this respect or we will not get the things we really want and need. It is up to us ! AVAILABLE UNITS ( at time of going to press ) THE LIVING ROOM is moving to bigger premises - so this amazing unit is now available at a really good price. In the sun with plenty of pavement for outside tables. £15,000 rent per annum The Living Room Details THE CREAMERY sadly this cafe closed shortly after opening. It is in another ideal situation on the sunny and busy side of the Broadway. It is a substantial landmark building and would suit a Gastro Pub - Quality Restaurant - or High Quality Shop. BROADWAY RUBBISH | Latest News While we are trying hard to improve the look of the Broadway, it seems as though many are intent on making it ever more difficult. We saw photos of the debris let outside Charity Shops overnight. This is “fly-tipping” and subject to Council enforcement. We have been trying to get all of the bins off the High Street and the Council have implemented “timed bag” collections. We still have some bins remaining that belong to 3rd party waste contractors; these have to go as well. The Hanging Baskets are rather unspectacular this year but we are hampered by lack of budget, the recent very hot summer and the reality that bigger baskets require watering perhaps as often as 3 times a day. We would love to have a better display but we need more help from volunteers to make this happen. Can you help? The “Town Square” is popular with most, though people are leaving their rubbish behind. Please use the bins provided or take it home. It is also not a place for rowdy behaviour late at night. Please be considerate, some people are trying to sleep. The facility was provided for all to enjoy. Can we ask the minority not to spoil it for the majority, please? The Mill Hill Litter Pickers are doing a great job, which frankly should not be necessary, if people did the right thing and took their rubbish to the dump in Summers Lane or took it home to be collected from their bins by the Council. This is so basic, it is the way we all ought to behave, but seemingly it is not second nature to some people. Oh and a word of warning. If you park a vehicle close to the planters after this sign, image003.jpg you could be liable for a fine of up to £1000 and 3 points on your licence. It is an international sign meaning no vehicles past this point!

MILL HILL TRADERS & BUSINESS NETWORK Notably the Broadway will be 100 years “young” in 2020. We are setting up a small committee to firstly scope what such Celebrations could cover, to plan and cost the activities and to then seek out sources of funding such that it will be a great event for all. The Mill Hill Neighbourhood Forum also plans to establish the Mill Hill Traders and Businesses Network. The principal purpose of this organisation will be to help our Town Centre develop and thrive. By focused and co-ordinated approaches, Mill Hill Neighbourhood Forum has already acquired £150,000 in funding to-date for Mill Hill. £65,000 funded the feasibility study for Step-Free-Access at Mill Hill Broadway Station. We now know that £8.5m is required to achieve SFA and a grant request will soon be submitted to the Department of Trans- port to achieve a very substantial award towards this goal. Further monies will be required from Section 106 payments developers make to the Council. We have a feasibility study for a 150-bedroom Hotel with Multi-storey Car park to be developed next to the Broadway station on the current surface level car park. We raised funds for the Town Square and for the regeneration of Shops and paving at the shopping precinct in Salcombe Gardens. Five of the six elected members for Hale & Mill Hill Wards are members of the MHNF Committee, and we have access to the Council to review specific issues. We have produced 2 editions of the Mill Hill Guide and the 2019 version is now in preparation for release at the end of September. See rate card attached for advertisers. Town Centres are struggling throughout the UK. The ones that will do more than survive are those that work together with common goals and objectives to develop the compelling set of offerings which encourage more people to visit, more frequently. Annual Membership £100. This will fund necessary • Administration costs • 2 meetings per year • Provision of a “Shopwatch-Mill Hill” window sticker. • Reduced prices for advertising in Mill Hill Today’s Monthly Digital Newsletter. • Joint working together on matters such as • Business Rates • Waste Collection • Promotions • Crime Prevention • Town Square Usage • Event concepts • Future Developments • Quarterly Seminars on key topics, e.g. Targeted marketing, Design for Life, etc • Input to the strategic future for co-ordinated business growth • A website for businesses, listing all in the Network • Promotion of Specific events in Mill Hill Broadway Twitter feed, Instagram, MillHill Broadway.co.uk (News Blog) • Press Releases for the Network • For specific agreed initiatives we will separately look to raise funds. e.g. Not just a tree in the Town Square and basic Council decorations on the street lights but white lights in the large trees throughout our shopping streets in December. Let’s make it really special to attract more people.

REVIEW SIMPLE COFFEE

Mill Hill Broadway Reviewed August 2018 Next to Nat West Bank Site This month we have one new opening on Broadway and we welcome a new Coffee Cafe to next to the Nat West Bank site called SIMPLE COFFEE (see T Shirt photo below ! ) There is a new coffee place on the Broadway. So we visited for lunch and to try out the menu. The first thing we noticed is how pleasantly the cafe is set out with arty pictures of dancers and a cool interior. It reminded us of the Italian coffee shop that used to be where BAW now is.....and the menu has a distinctly Italian flavour. We decided to have paninis (photos below) which are all priced at just £4.95 These were very generously sized and made to order. They came with a small side salad. Himalayan Pink Salt and pepper allowed to season to our taste. The avocado, Brie and peppers panini was very tasty and the tuna and cheddar cheese was also very filling. Ideal for lunch. For desert we shared the Apple Cake, at only £2.90 , it has to be the best value cake on the Broadway. All the cakes are home made and priced at this. You can also be even more decadent and try out the cheesecake and others at a slightly higher price. The cake was sensational, and likely to become a firm Mill Hill favourite treat. We can see ourselves coming here for coffee and cake often ! Now...the cafe is called Simple Coffee....so we hoped the coffee would be good. Luckily, we were not disappointed. Our Americano Black £2.40 was strong, smooth and smelt wonderful and tasted fantastic. As coffeeaholics we had to ask the staff about whether it has Italian origins !! We were pleased to hear that the manager had managed an Italian restaurant - so we were correct!! So if you like Italian style coffee I am pleased to let you know we have it back on the Broadway. The cappuccino £2.70 was made superbly and looked perfect (see photo). They offer a takeaway service as well - so you can grab and go. Simple Coffee does not have the large meals of the other cafes on the Broadway, but offers an Italian style cafe, with brilliant coffee and the best cakes. It’s salads in bowls, sandwiches and paninis are excellent, and for those of us who like to light lunch and drink coffee this is a very welcome addition to the Broadway. Comfortable seating and decor make it a lovely place to sit. Finally the cafe has outdoor tables, which are in a quiet part next to Nat West, and it opens at 7a.m as well for early birds and commuters who want a quality coffee fix before/on the way to work. So we suggest you visit as soon as possible, and whilst they have several of the cakes for testing on the counter !! Opening Times Mon to Sat 8am to 5pm Sunday 9am to 5pm

LONDON ARTS HUB REVIEW

London Review August - September 2018

The Summer Proms festival at the Royal Albert Hall has celebrated Bernstein this year. West Side Story and On The Town were features of the series and can still be seen on BBC I PLAYER and are recommended. Local MILL HILL superstar JACOB COLLIER who went to Mill Hill County had his own Prom earlier in the summer and it was a sell out great success. It is great to see a local lad headlining the Festival this year. Check his jazzy music on all streaming services. Well worth it. A fantastic Worldwide talent. Other highlights have included Verdi’s Requiem - the EU Youth Orchestra who played a stunning Sunday matinee which brought the biggest number of encores seen in recent years at the Proms. An amazing orchestra and hopefully Brexit will not stop the UK players taking part - seeing as we started the Orchestra. It is worth noting that the PROMMERS almost all of them are against leaving the EU. Despite what you see on Last Night - the Prommers are clever people who know that music is best served with no borders and who love seeing orchestras from around the World. Once more you will see more EU flags in the Hall than Union Jacks amongst the regulars. The great thing about the Proms is that for £6 you can stand less than 10 feet away from the greatest musicians in the World for a couple of hours. Probably the only place in the World where this is possible night after night. The BBC comes in for alot of criticism but these concerts give so much pleasure to many people - many of them students - pensioners and other people on low incomes who for £240 can see 75 concerts over the summer with a place that would cost in the region of £60 plus in a concert hall per concert. So it is amazing value. The New Opera Seaons start in late September with THE RING at the newly opened Royal Opera House. MILL HILL MUSICAL THEATRE COMPANY

By Farhat Dar

BOX OFFICE OPEN FOR MHMTC’S FIDDLER ON THE ROOF Tickets are now on sale for MHMTC’s production of smash musical Fiddler On The Roof. Joseph Stein, Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick’s 1965 show won nine Tony Awards, running for a record-breaking eight years on Broadway before being turned into a hit film and becoming a firm favourite with amateur groups around the world. “Fiddler Of The Roof is one of the classic musicals of all time. It is rich in humour and warmth, but also deals with real-life tragedy, and a society in turmoil, as the world and a settled way of life is changing. Every song is a winner too!” says Derek Holland, who is the musical director on MHMTC’s production being staged at Hartley Hall, Flower Street, off the Broadway, from Wednesday 24 to Saturday 27 October 2018. The show tells of stoic milkman Tevye, who clings to his Jewish traditions, but he and fellow villagers of Anatevka in Tsarist Russia at the turn of the 20th century must embrace change as their youngsters rebel and political and social upheaval hits the community. Fiddler On The Roof gets to the heart of Tevye and his family and friends, and the audience will rejoice in the warmth and closeness of the community – but also cry with the villagers as they are forced to gather up their possessions and say goodbye to their little ‘corner of the world’, becoming refugees. Sing along to favourites such as If I Were A Rich Man, Tradition, Miracle Of Miracles, Matchmaker Matchmaker, Sunrise Sunset and Do You Love Me? Alongside the traditions, love and laughs, there are ghosts, angry Russians, manipulative matchmakers and bickering villagers to enjoy. Don’t miss out on seeing the production. Tickets are on sale from 1 September, with an early-bird discount for Wednesday 24, Thursday 25 and the Saturday 27 October matinee performances priced at £10. Tickets for the Gala performances on Friday 26 and Saturday 27 October at 7.30pm ar £15 – when the audience will be served with a light supper during the interval. In October, tickets for the Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday performances will cost £13.50. Under 16s tickets cost £9 for all performances. To book tickets, go to www.ticketsource.co.uk/mhmtc (booking fee applies), or contact the box office by email via boxoffice@mhmtc.co.uk or telephone on 01923 269923
