COOKSLEYS CLOSES ICONIC MILL HILL BUTCHERS SHUTS

The long established butchers on Broadway closed on Saturday 29 September which was a shock to many people. The owners decided to call it a day due to several reasons including the huge increases in rents and business rates which they told us made it difficult for lone traders on the High Street. A favourite shop for many people this closure has been received badly on social media with many sad customers wondering where to shop for quality sourced meat at good prices. There are butchers in Mill Hill East and on Daws Lane. However, this shop will be missed.

MILL HILL GUIDE OUT THIS MONTH

The ANNUAL MILL HILL GUIDE is published this month. Created by THE NEIGHBOURHOOD FORUM and the ARC MEDIA GROUP it is printed this year by SPLASH PRINTING on the Broadway. Please support all the advertisers and look through the listings to see all the amazing shops around the Mill Hill area. You may be suprised at the variety in such a small place. Thank you to everyone who has contributed and advertised and this edition is smaller than usual because of getting the GUIDE ready.

Beautiful!

We love our special Mill Hill.

Mill Hill Litter Pic ers

But it can look quite messy with all the litter that has been carelessly thrown about. Ugly ‘dirt spots’ build up over time and the council’s resources are too stretched tokdeal with them. So some of us Mill Hill residents get together for just one hour a month to clear the area of litter.

It’s very social and we have a lot of fun together - grabbers and bags provided! And a well-deserved cuppa after. Best of all is that we’re making a difference; incidents of littering has dramatically reduced and many of the really bad spots have remained tidy.

The tough times on the High Streets have seen two major closures on the Broadway in September. First the Zushi chain and then Cooksleys the butchers. This has suprised many residents and shows how hard trading on the High Street is at the present. As we move towards Christmas local traders are asking that we all support them by shopping as much as possible at their stores - eating out - and running our Christmas events in local restaurants this year in preference to the West End which benefits from the tourist trade. The new Traders Network is going to put an extra effort into the Christmas tree and decorations this year in the hope that we can have a bumper Christmas on the Broadway. Lights switch on is 5p.m November 30th in the Town Square. The nights are closing in and the temperatures are dropping. Next month we will have a big issue because this month we are very busy getting the Annual Guide for Mill Hill ready. Look out for it in your letterboxes towards the end of the month Shop Local - Use it or lose it ! NEWS CHORAL COURSE A GREAT SUCCESS By Carole Endersby

Handel’s Messiah is always going to ensure a good sing and the sense of anticipation was great as the participants arrived – around 60 people made up of LPAC members and a lot of visitors. The convivial atmosphere and the energy levels were fuelled by the refreshment breaks during the day: coffee on arrival and mid-morning, a splendid buffet lunch and tea before the ‘performance’ at the end of the day. At the start of the morning session, after excercises, both physical and vocal, Tom Winpenny led us through a number of choruses, focussing on interpretation of the music and the words, as well as the quality of the sound. The afternoon was led by Tom Appleton, working on more choruses. It was interesting that the approach of the two leaders was different but the combination was very effective. Half-way through, the floor was cleared for all the singers to stand in a circle. In order to concentrate on keeping in time and listening to your colleagues, everyone clapped or counted out loud different rhythms, synchronous with everyone else. Great fun and very effective! Friends and family came to hear the sing-through of the choruses we had worked on. The singers really enjoyed it and the audience members were heard to say how amazing the performance had been after only a day of singing together and how great the concert on 24 November was going to be. Tickets for HANDEL’s MESSIAH are on sale now available from KILWORTH AUDIO on the Broadway. The concert features a live orchestra as well as the choir and is an ideal curtain raiser for the Festive Season.

CHRISTMAS CARDS GO ON SALE IN OXFAM Next month we will have a big guide to CHRISTMAS in MILL HILL TODAY. Howver, already some shops have Christmas food and items. The excellent cards at OXFAM have arrived and as you can see from the photo - there is a great choice and varied prices with cards starting at just 99p. Oxfam cards have some of the best designs and are of high qualiy. Added to that they help the poorest people in the world and with many disasters like the recent Tsunami happening this is a good time to invest in helping other communities outside of our own. Also on sale in the BROADWAY’s oldest business ( Now here for over 60 years ) is FAIRTRADE COFFEE and DIVINE CHOCOLATE products. Of course the usual excellent nearly new items are also always available in the store which represent excellent value and with recycling and upcycling being key to saving money and our environment Oxfam and our other Charity Shops are doing great business in the run up to Christmas.

LITTER PICKERS SUCCESSES

The Mill Hill litter pickers go from strength to strength. Recent picks in the area have seen record numbers of volunteers turn up to clear up rubbish in the park area - Broadway - Hale - Mill Hill East and more. In addition a good relationship with nearby Colindale Litter Pickers has led to some joint picks with groups from each helping out. This was evident on the World Clear Up day in September and the Montrose Park clear up in Colindale. The next litter pick is SATURDAY 6 OCTOBER and you can turn up at 11am to DAWS LANE car park and work from there. Pickers and bin bags are provided or you can bring your own. If you intend to work on the roads then a hi vis jacket is advised. These can be purchased for a couple of pounds from Amazon. The parks and green areas need picking so its not essential. The picks are great fun and great exercise. By clearing up the area we all get to enjoy a litter free place to live and work.

NEWS IN SHORT The Autumn Market was a great success despite a wet Saturday. Large crowds on the Friday and Saturday enjoyed a wide variety of stalls. There is a Saturday market on OCT 13 and then the popular FRENCH MARKET returns for the first weekend in November ready for everyone to stock up for Christmas with great gifts and food stuffs.

STEP FREE ACCESS |Request STEP-FREE-ACCESS (SFA) at Mill Hill Broadway Station We finally have the opportunity to put in an application for at least some of the ÂŁ8.5m funding required to help make this station fit-for-purpose, to the Department for Transport. SFA helps those with any disabilities to use the station; it is also of great value to families with children & buggies and for those with heavy baggage. What we NOW need from ALL residents of Mill Hill & the immediately surrounding areas are the following: Please send an email to millhill_nf@btinternet.com to tell us why you in particular would benefit from SFA at this station. Your e-mails can be shared as part of our application for funding. Mill Hill Broadway Station is a major Transport Hub, interchanging with many buses from surrounding areas. It provides access to St Pancras/Kings X, Gatwick, Luton, & soon with the Elizabeth line at Farringdon, Heathrow Airports. At West Hampsted you can change onto the Overground for Stratford, Richmond, White City or Clapham junction. Equally you can access the Jubille line for trips to Bond Street or Westminster. Brighton & Bedford with all stations inbetween and Kent are all readily accessible, assuming you can at present manage the 39 steps to the station. We arfe all being told not to use our cars but to jump on Public Transport. SFA may make this station a viable alternative for some of your journeys. We have to assume that planned improvements to Thameslink will continue to make the service more regular and more reliable. This request does not ask for comments on the train service but simply whether SFA would encourage you to use the station more frequently. Please indicate how many extra journeys you would make per month. Please state perhaps, concisely, why you may feel currently excluded from the train service offered, if that is the case. We have to win this bid for funding or wait 4-5 years for another opportunity. So please copy this request to everyone you know, particularly those who do not access Facebook. Thank you in advance for your help in this matter, which will benefit so many local people.

CAREERS MILL HILL TRADERS & BUSINESS NETWORK LAUNCH MEETING at the NW7hub

A very successful meeting was held on September 11th at the Hub. A full discussion developed new ideas and many positive ways in which the new forum can help to support local traders. Over the next month John Gillett will be visiting local traders to invite them to join the Network which it is hoped will have over 50 members by the New Year.

MILL HILL TRADERS & BUSINESS NETWORK Notably the Broadway will be 100 years “young” in 2020. We are setting up a small committee to firstly scope what such Celebrations could cover, to plan and cost the activities and to then seek out sources of funding such that it will be a great event for all. The Mill Hill Neighbourhood Forum also plans to establish the Mill Hill Traders and Businesses Network. The principal purpose of this organisation will be to help our Town Centre develop and thrive. By focused and co-ordinated approaches, Mill Hill Neighbourhood Forum has already acquired £150,000 in funding to-date for Mill Hill. £65,000 funded the feasibility study for Step-Free-Access at Mill Hill Broadway Station. We now know that £8.5m is required to achieve SFA and a grant request will soon be submitted to the Department of Trans- port to achieve a very substantial award towards this goal. Further monies will be required from Section 106 payments developers make to the Council. We have a feasibility study for a 150-bedroom Hotel with Multi-storey Car park to be developed next to the Broadway station on the current surface level car park. We raised funds for the Town Square and for the regeneration of Shops and paving at the shopping precinct in Salcombe Gardens. Five of the six elected members for Hale & Mill Hill Wards are members of the MHNF Committee, and we have access to the Council to review specific issues. We have produced 2 editions of the Mill Hill Guide and the 2019 version is now in preparation for release at the end of September. See rate card attached for advertisers. Town Centres are struggling throughout the UK. The ones that will do more than survive are those that work together with common goals and objectives to develop the compelling set of offerings which encourage more people to visit, more frequently. Annual Membership £100. This will fund necessary • Administration costs • 2 meetings per year • Provision of a “Shopwatch-Mill Hill” window sticker. • Reduced prices for advertising in Mill Hill Today’s Monthly Digital Newsletter. • Joint working together on matters such as • Business Rates • Waste Collection • Promotions • Crime Prevention • Town Square Usage • Event concepts • Future Developments • Quarterly Seminars on key topics, e.g. Targeted marketing, Design for Life, etc • Input to the strategic future for co-ordinated business growth • A website for businesses, listing all in the Network • Promotion of Specific events in Mill Hill Broadway Twitter feed, Instagram, MillHill Broadway.co.uk (News Blog) • Press Releases for the Network • For specific agreed initiatives we will separately look to raise funds. e.g. Not just a tree in the Town Square and basic Council decorations on the street lights but white lights in the large trees throughout our shopping streets in December. Let’s make it really special to attract more people.

FIDDLER ON THE ROOF TICKETS SELLING LIKE HOT CAKES Tickets for MHMTC’s production of Fiddler On The Roof are going down very well with Mill Hillians! Through September, the group ran an early-bird discount, in which three of the five performances – the Wednesday and Thursday evening shows, and also the Saturday matinee – were available for just £10 per ticket. This has gone down well with people in Mill Hill and beyond. However, it was the Saturday Gala Night performance that sold out in the middle of the month! MHMTC’s advertising and PR machine got into gear to publicise the show, with members out in force handing out flyers and putting out the word. Four banners also went up – in Mill Hill East, on Mill Hill Circus, at Mill Hill Broadway station – and also on Apex Corner. The stormy weather in the middle of September, however, put paid to one of the banners (Mill Hill East), as high winds tore it off the railings. We are still trying to track it down, so if you know where it is, please get in touch!! In a first for the group, MHMTC had a presence at the Mill Hill Autumn Market on 21 and 22 September – through high wind and steady rain! Co-ordinated by Kim Llewellyn, we organised a stall, and members were able to tell locals about the show, even managing to sell a decent number of tickets! It was an invaluable profile-raising exercise too, as there seem to still be a few people in Mill Hill who don’t know about us. Meanwhile, preparations for the show are going well. We’re delighted to have a very talented cast, who are all really enjoying rehearsals. David Rose in the lead role of Tevye is even growing a bushy beard specifically for the part! We have also hired the scenery, booked the orchestra and organised make-up and costumes, while the lighting and sound are being sorted. It’s going to be a fabulous theatrical experience, so don’t miss out on the hottest ticket in town! To remind you, Fiddler On The Roof is being staged at Hartley Hall, Flower Lane, off The Broadway, from Wednesday 24 to Saturday 27 October. £13.50 tickets are still available for the Wednesday 24 October 7.30pm, Thursday 25 October 7.30m and Saturday 27 October 2.30pm performances. You can also book £15 tickets for the Saturday 7.30pm Gala Night performance. Under 16s tickets are £9 for all available performances.

MILL HILL RUGBY CLUB Celebrating 80 Years

Club News: A new season is under way! Through the summer we had a successful campaign of friendlies and have started the season in a similar fashion. We had another successful Family Day for Barnet Mencap which we revealed our Project Rugby side’s new kit! Furthermore, on that day we were fortunate enough to be visited by the Mill Hill Fire Service who showed us all the ins and outs of the truck and entertained all the families who’d come down for the day. Also in summer news, the England Rugby Mitsubishi Volunteer of the Year Awards were held at Twickenham stadium, Mill Hill had a representative having won at county level – Hugo Webster. It was a fantastic evening which showed the importance of what a tight knit community can achieve when working for each other. This is why Mill Hill RFC strives to be a community focused club. Amongst the return of Mill Hill’s league fixtures and Saracens returning home games we’re excited to announce on Wednesday October 4th at 12:30pm our Project Rugby side, our mixed ability team, play their first competitive tournament at Allianz Park. Entry is free so feel free to come along! It’ll be the first official outing in their new kit too! The first few Saracens Home fixtures have been successful ones and our club has been busier than ever on match days, Mill Hill as a Town has rated highly amongst the visitors we’ve had from Bristol & Gloucester supporters, so keep up the good work everybody! We’re hoping to see an increase in local people coming in to support the guys playing, or simply to have some food, tea, a beer, or even volunteer with us!
