Beautiful!

We love our special Mill Hill.

Mill Hill Litter Pic ers

But it can look quite messy with all the litter that has been carelessly thrown about. Ugly ‘dirt spots’ build up over time and the council’s resources are too stretched tokdeal with them. So some of us Mill Hill residents get together for just one hour a month to clear the area of litter.

It’s very social and we have a lot of fun together - grabbers and bags provided! And a well-deserved cuppa after. Best of all is that we’re making a difference; incidents of littering has dramatically reduced and many of the really bad spots have remained tidy.

The £23 million redevelopment project will include: A fully accessible, weatherproof facility for 3000 spectators First-class hospitality experience A centre of excellence for Middlesex University’s London Sport Institute and Health Faculty that includes a purpose built simulation suite A dedicated education centre operated by the award-winning Saracens Sport Foundation Improved training, medical and competition facilities for all users including athletics, rugby and community sport The creation of a community garden designed by local school children A new media facility Saracens chief executive officer, Mitesh Velani, said: “We have been working closely with Barnet Council and our community partners developing plans for the West Stand that we can all be proud of. I am delighted we have made positive strides forward. “The West Stand redevelopment project demonstrates our continued commitment to providing the best environment for our teams to thrive, a modern home where our fans create memories together and extending community initiatives that improve the lives of people in North London.” James Kennedy, Middlesex University’s Chief Financial Officer, commented: “Middlesex University has been working with Saracens on this project for several years. Together we have developed an exciting proposal for the West Stand and we are very pleased that London Borough of Barnet have been able to support us. The three organisations working together offer an exciting opportunity to make a real difference to Copthall and the Borough.” The Leader of Barnet Council, Councillor Richard Cornelius, said: “We should never underestimate the huge contribution both Saracens and Middlesex University have already made to the local community in Barnet. Saracens have transformed Allianz Park into a thriving community sports and education facility, hosting a huge range of events for schools, older people and those with learning disabilities. They have also recently opened the new Saracens High School. “This is a positive development for communities in Barnet. We are therefore delighted to support Saracens and Middlesex University in their plans to improve and build for the future.” Gordon Banks, Chief Community Officer at Saracens, commented: “Allianz Park has become a thriving community hub with thousands of residents enjoying the high-quality facilities available at the stadium. The new West Stand will build on this success and through the Saracens Sport Foundation and our partnership with Middlesex University we can help improve the lives of even more local people.” The club aims to start the construction phase at the end of the current rugby season (summer of 2019) with completion anticipated in 2020. Matches will continue to be played at Allianz Park during this period and the club will keep supporters updated throughout the process.

WINES OF THE MONTH |

NOVEMBER WINES OF THE MONTH November Tastings Wednesday 7th – Benromach Whisky Tasting £15 Wednesday 28th – Winter Wine Tasting £10

Boutinot Les Six Cairanne £16.99 (on offer over Christmas at £14.99)

The slopes above the village of Cairanne are bedecked with treasure troves of well-established vineyards steeped in the classic terroir of ‘agrilo-calcaire’ (chalky clay) and bristling with parcels of low-yielding old vines, some of very rare and ancient grape varieties. The six varieties, some familiar (Grenache Noir, Syrah, Mourvèdre) and others less so (Cinsault, Counoise and Carignan Noir) are hand-picked and hand-sorted to ensure perfect ripeness. Some varieties are co-fermented together for greater complexity and all are fermented in large 6000l oak vats by the natural yeasts present on the grape skins. Vinification is traditional, aided by manual pigeage and gentle remontage. Les Six was later assembled, matured, again in the 6000l tronconiques for less than 12 months and bottled at Domaine Boutinot’s cellars in Cairanne. Les Six is all about elegance and the expression of six different grape varieties in an appellation often dominated by just two. This is a new style of Cairanne which, due to the ancient varieties included in the assemblage, is also a Cairanne whose heart holds dear the traditions of yesteryear. Full-flavoured and complex with the typical freshness and elegance coming from our hillside vineyards, layers of fruit are interwoven and underpinned by a plush texture and supple tannins which propel the scents and flavours of peppery red and black fruits to a vibrant, expressive finish. This wine has a natural affinity with herby lamb but would be superb with most grilled meats and roasted vegetables.

Chardonnay De Wetshof Estate Bon Vallon Sur Lie £12.95

Located 160km North of Cape Town, the Robertson Valley lies in the folds of the Riviersonderend and Langeberg Mountains where the Breede River meanders towards the Cape`s southern coastline. The chilly southern ocean breezes are funneled up the valley and give cooling respite to the vines throughout the growing season. Quite high concentrations of lime are found in the soil and this makes the area exceptionally fine for white grape varieties. Danie de Wet pioneered this noble cultivar in South Africa and this Chardonnay is a fresh and expressive, unwooded version. The nose is delicate with aromas of lemon, honeysuckle blossom and peach. The wine was matured on its lees to produce a vibrant, lemony dry wine with a yeasty and delicate nutty finish. Great by the glass it goes well with Caesar Salad or seared salmon or tuna, equally, it will complement grilled or roasted white meats and pan-fried duck.

We are delighted that Wine Expert Andy Smith from Mill Hill’s oldest independent wine shop has joined our writing team to bring you the latest news on Wines - tastings - and offers each month. Catch Andy and his staff in Mill Hill Wines every day for great friendly advice on Mill Hill Broadway.

BY JOHN GILLETT

Barnet Council introduces Public Space Protection Orders (PSPO) for Alcohol Related Nuisance and Anti-Social Behaviour Public spaces protection orders (PSPOs) are intended to deal with a particular nuisance or problem in a particular area that is detrimental to the local community’s qualify of life, by imposing conditions on the use of that area which apply to everyone. They are designed to ensure the law-abiding majority can use and enjoy public spaces, safe from anti-social behaviour.

SUCH AN ORDER HAS NOW BEEN INTRODUCED IN THE AREA SHOWN IN THE MAP BELOW, CENTRED ON BURNT OAK This order is in operation from 00.01hrs Monday 8th October 2018 and ends on 23.59hrs Wednesday 7th October 2020, unless extended. ANOTHER IS UNDER CONSIDERATION FOR THE AREA SHOWN AROUND EDGWARE TOWN CENTRE AS IN THE 2ND MAP. BELOW:

What conditions will be included in the Alcohol Nuisance and Anti-Social Behaviour - PSPO? Any person is prohibited from, at any time, consuming alcohol or having an open alcohol container, in any public place within the restricted area: In this area any person who without reasonable excuse continues consuming alcohol in the restricted area when asked to stop by an authorised officer of the authority, Police Officer, Police Community Support Officer under Section 63 of the ASB Crime and Policing Act 2014 or fails to surrender anything in his / her possession which is, or which the constable or authorised person reasonably believes to be, alcohol or a container for alcohol is liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding level two on the standard scale or if in receipt of a Fixed Penalty Notice to a penalty of a maximum of £100. This is subject to the following exemptions: - Any Licensed premises (this includes pubs restaurants and clubs). - Any Licensed events (including temporary events). Any religious ceremonies where consumption of alcohol is a considered an acceptable part of the service associated with the venue.

How will the PSPO be enforced? If an individual is found to be engaging in any behaviour either prohibited or a condition of the PSPO, they will be warned initially. Breach of a PSPO is criminal offence. The penalty for breach of a PSPO can be a Fixed Penalty Notice FPN of £100, or if appropriate: o court can impose a fine of (up to level 3) £1000 o an application for a Criminal Behaviour Order can be made as a result of a breach. Mill Hill Neighbourhood Forum is concerned that such PSPO’s may move problems from one area of the Borough to another, such as Mill Hill. We trust that this will not be the outcome of these necessary measures, and will be looking to Council Officers, Elected members and the Police Service to ensure Community Safety across the Borough.

MILL HILL TRADERS & BUSINESS NETWORK Notably the Broadway will be 100 years “young” in 2020. We are setting up a small committee to firstly scope what such Celebrations could cover, to plan and cost the activities and to then seek out sources of funding such that it will be a great event for all. The Mill Hill Neighbourhood Forum also plans to establish the Mill Hill Traders and Businesses Network. The principal purpose of this organisation will be to help our Town Centre develop and thrive. By focused and co-ordinated approaches, Mill Hill Neighbourhood Forum has already acquired £150,000 in funding to-date for Mill Hill. £65,000 funded the feasibility study for Step-Free-Access at Mill Hill Broadway Station. We now know that £8.5m is required to achieve SFA and a grant request will soon be submitted to the Department of Trans- port to achieve a very substantial award towards this goal. Further monies will be required from Section 106 payments developers make to the Council. We have a feasibility study for a 150-bedroom Hotel with Multi-storey Car park to be developed next to the Broadway station on the current surface level car park. We raised funds for the Town Square and for the regeneration of Shops and paving at the shopping precinct in Salcombe Gardens. Five of the six elected members for Hale & Mill Hill Wards are members of the MHNF Committee, and we have access to the Council to review specific issues. We have produced 2 editions of the Mill Hill Guide and the 2019 version is now in preparation for release at the end of September. See rate card attached for advertisers. Town Centres are struggling throughout the UK. The ones that will do more than survive are those that work together with common goals and objectives to develop the compelling set of offerings which encourage more people to visit, more frequently. Annual Membership £100. This will fund necessary • Administration costs • 2 meetings per year • Provision of a “Shopwatch-Mill Hill” window sticker. • Reduced prices for advertising in Mill Hill Today’s Monthly Digital Newsletter. • Joint working together on matters such as • Business Rates • Waste Collection • Promotions • Crime Prevention • Town Square Usage • Event concepts • Future Developments • Quarterly Seminars on key topics, e.g. Targeted marketing, Design for Life, etc • Input to the strategic future for co-ordinated business growth • A website for businesses, listing all in the Network • Promotion of Specific events in Mill Hill Broadway Twitter feed, Instagram, MillHill Broadway.co.uk (News Blog) • Press Releases for the Network • For specific agreed initiatives we will separately look to raise funds. e.g. Not just a tree in the Town Square and basic Council decorations on the street lights but white lights in the large trees throughout our shopping streets in December. Let’s make it really special to attract more people.

WHY LITTER PICKING ? by Hernan Pecile founder of Colindale Litter Pickers

Why litter picking? My name is Hernan Pecile and in May 2018, frustrated with the increasing amount of litter in my area, I decided to create “Colindale Litter Pickers”. After this, a lot of amazing things started to happen, but first let me jump back to 2013. That year, I contacted Barnet Council as I was interested in doing some litter pick volunteer work and had no clue where to start. They lent me all the equipment required for the task, gave me some health and safety advice, and my family and I undertook our very first litter pick. They also offered me the option to apply to the “adopt a place” scheme. At the time I was not ready to take the level of commitment required so I refused but two years later, I decided to buy a very basic kit of pickers and take the streets… again, a short-lived endeavour. Fast forward to April 2018, the amount of litter in Colindale was reaching tipping point (picture 1). After repeatedly reporting this to the Council I decided to write to our MP and Councillors, with pictures showing the appalling situation on the Millennium Walk. Finally, at the end of April, the Council cleaned it up (picture 2). It was a victory for myself and the many other concerned people who had contacted the Council and other authorities.

Having seen the effect of the improvement, the following month, I set up the Colindale Litter Pickers on Twitter and together with my friend Andy and our children carried out our first official litter pick. A few weeks later and we were heading out again, set up with grabbers, gloves and bags provided by Barnet Council, a Facebook page and a nice logo designed by Andy. I am not a very sociable person, I have to Picture 2 - Millennium Walk after Council confess, nor had I been involved in community activities before. At the beginning it took me a lot of nerve to organise each litter pick event, meeting new people, discussing these matters with business in Colindale, meeting our local authorities, let alone speaking in public and repeating this over and over again. I think, as with most of things in life, when you find a powerful driving force it gets easier to overcome psychological obstacles and social anxiety and eventually I somehow got used to it and my confidence has improved. Things have changed over recent months. In the beginning, I believed litter picking was about cleaning up our streets and green spaces, getting rid of fly tipping and making my neighbourhood a more enjoyable place; with the intention that other

This month’s feature is on LITTER PICKING and we welcome Herman from Colindale Litter Pickers who have been working closely with our Litter Pickers in Mill HIll and surrounding areas to make it better for all of us.

people would eventually follow suit, imitating this positive approach. My first crash back down to earth happened soon afterwards! In June 2018, together with a bunch of volunteers, we cleaned up Millennium Walk and only days after that I witnessed how people would still litter without contemplation nor respect… Once I processed the frustration and anger, I came to realise that our activity would not scale up in the way I had expected. People would not change their attitude overnight because “unknown invisible people” had cleaned up a small plot of land, hence some adjustments in tactics would be necessary to get the message through. So, after reading people’s comments on Facebook and Twitter, I changed my language from “clean up” to “raise awareness” which turned out to be more engaging and effective. Now our focus has shifted to organising events in very public areas, such as parks and busy streets and engaging with local organizations such as The Guides, religious and local communities, etc. Another aspect of this is to make our volunteers clearly recognizable when they are doing the job, so we wear hi visibility jackets with clear legends about who we are and what are we doing. Now “the pinks” are a thing that is started being recognized. We don’t want to clear up other people’s mess, or even clean up the mess the Council should clean up, we represent an invitation to our fellow neighbours to be aware, to hear our wakeup call: Litter has no benefits at all for our community and actually, in our opinion, it reveals the grade of social dysfunction which we, as society, live in. This then, is the story of why I set up the Colindale Litter Pickers, and how we have evolved over the last six months. If you haven’t done a litter pick yet, I hope you can one day Picture 4 - Roe Green, Colindale and share a bit of your time and lend a hand to your local groups such the Mill Hill Litter Pickers or us in Colindale. The feeling of accomplishment is amazing, especially when working with such incredible people who give their own time to help build a better community. SAM’S MUSIC SPECIAL This month we welcome our GAMING and MUSIC writer Sam to round up the best albums which have been released recently in the run up to Christmas. She takes us TRACK BY TRACK through them.

George Ezra Album: Staying at Tamaras

Produced by Former Mill HIll Studios Engineer : Cam Blackwood Pretty shining people: This was relaxing to listen to with a smooth bassline and being very well composed, the songs tune was very catchy and is even still stuck in my head now. I liked listening to the chorus as it sounded quite uplifting and positive. Don't matter now: I liked following this songs catchy mellow beat and I think this is a great song to listen to on a sunny day to have a good time. The lyrics are motivational and encouraging which I think is a good quality for a song to have. Get away: This song was again great to get your spirits up with a fast beat that seems to last throughout the entire song, this would be a great song to listen to at a party or bob your head to while listening to the beat in headphones, the lyrics are relatable and original. Shotgun: I couldn't resist the urge to sing along to this songs childlike lyrics, I liked listening to this song as it reminds me of playing on the beach of Southend in the summer. This song has a rather innocent vibe to it as it is simply him describing some kind of sunny place. Paradise: This piece of music would be great for a date with his emotionally charged lyrics literally singing about the heart and “bloody vision”, it's not a typical love song it’s more like a romantic rock song that makes you want to break into a ridiculous victory dance. The songs beat gets you carried away and listen to more of the song. All my love: This song is quite pleasant to listen to with the slow tempo so it would be good to listen to if you just want to kick back after a long day, the lyrics are filled with romantic emotion which makes the listener want to keep listening to it, this slow love song takes you into another world and sounds as if it could drift you to sleep. Sugarcoat: What I liked about this track was the passionate lyrics about a love interest, Ezra is great at singing his heart out in this song, the lyrics are genuine and original. The song is repetitive making it very catchy and easy to lose yourself in it. This song was short and simple Hold my girl: The music in this song is slightly more of a serious tone with the violins in the background, the lyrics are deep and meaningful, this song will sing to your soul actually making you feel as if you are there in the music with him. Saviour: This song sounds as if it is of a minor tone, the lyrics are powerful and make you imagine the heartbreak he is singing about, the music in the background make you feel sorry for whoever he is singing, his voice is dramatic in this song blowing me away as soon as he gets to the chorus. Only a human: Listening to this makes me think of looking out of a window on a cold night, it is relatable, the lyrics are sensitive and emotional it's great to listen to if you are troubled or anxious. The chords in the background are dramatic, this song can actually make you feel the emotions of George in the song. The beautiful dream: This song is a great example of a love song, the instruments in the background are quite cinematic and his voice echos like he is in space, this song makes me think of some kind of fantasy, the lyrics are dreamy and following them is like drifting of into another world, he describes the kind of love you would find in a fantasy film.

SAM’S MUSIC SPECIAL

A Star Is Born by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper:

Black Eyes: This is a great rock song with the bass drums, the guitar in the background sounded really cool, accompanied by Bradleys voice which was a great fit. Would be better with some more lyrics though, overall liked listening to it. La Vie En Rose: Lady Gaga shows off her ability to speak French beautifully, The piano in major key, goes perfectly with the romantic mood of the song. The song shows Lady Gaga’s natural talent without any editing or added sound effects. Maybe It’s Time: I really liked the acoustic guitar in the background, it adds a soft effect to the song as well as the vocals being accompanied by anything but the guitar which makes him sound wiser in the song, the lyrics are somewhat therapeutic, sounded a bit folk singer-ish. Out Of Time: This song was good though it had no lyrics, Bradley Cooper has great skills in making cool solos with the electric guitar, the groovy music and beat in the background reminds me a bit of country rock, it sounds great though its instrumental. Alibi: Loved the upbeat electric guitar and bass drums in this song and again this song sounds very country rock which I quite like and I personally believe Bradley has the perfect voice for this song it’s got a good low pitch to match the slow tempo of the song and make it sound very rock. Shallow: I felt this song had a deeper meaning due to the meaningful and emotional lyrics, minor key electric guitar and Lady Gaga’s dramatic vocal solos, this song is excellent and personally one of the most memorable of the album songs Music To My Eyes: The duet between Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper is truly romantic, I loved the background music, the guitar solo was great for making it sound very romantic and I find the song name interesting and light-hearted. I really like the imagination that was put into this. Diggin My Grave: I like the somewhat serious tone of this song with the minor key and dramatic vocals, the lyrics and the background guitar make it seem like a tragic end to a love, the bass drum is great to bob your head to, tap or dance to.

SAM’S MUSIC SPECIAL

Always Remember Us This Way: This song has a rather sad tone to it, the minor key piano and sad lyrics makes me think of a breakup pop song I would usually hear celebs sing, this song sounds as though it’s meant for a slow dance. I loved the piano and Gaga’s voice in this song it shows that she really has talent. Look What I Found: The piano chords remind me of an upbeat blues song from the 80’s, along with the groovy saxophone, bass drum and key change into the chorus gives this song its happy spirit, the lyrics tell a story of a lonely women who goes out and finds someone she loves, hence the key change, I think this song would be great to dance to if your having a bad day. Heal Me: This is a great song loved the somewhat psychedelic background music and beat, there's also a very faint electric guitar in the background at some point almost like Gaga is performing in a dream world, like the way she raises her voice almost like she is begging someone to heal her. I Don’t Know What Love Is: The slow tempo of this song and piano music, reminds me of a dance were to lovers have just met, the lyrics are truly heartfelt and romantic, I think this song represents the part of the film where Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga have fallen in love with each other, I loved it. Is That Alright: Gaga seems nostalgic in this song, I think the piano music is supposed to sound nostalgic with the end chord being higher than the others making people think of the past good times, the lyrics seem like Lady Gaga is trying to tell her life story at the beginning, then it seems like she wants a family. Why Did You Do That: This song is different to most in the album, I like the way the background music at the beginning seems fairly innocent and somewhat mischievous, the lyrics depict that Gaga feels some kind of lust someone who I assume is Bradley Cooper, the music gets more serious throughout the song showing that the lust grows into love after a while. Hair Body Face: The background music, computer beat makes and the repeated lyrics makes the song seem psychedelic and hypnotising almost like someone is singing about the way they feel about a person. I like this song it’s relaxing to listen to Before I Cry: I liked that this song was sung by Lady Gaga, she honestly has the perfect voice talent for a dramatic solo reaching those high pitches in the chorus, The lyrics are exaggerated to give this song its emotion and make people feel the singer, honestly loved the song it’s great. Too Far Gone: This song is short but filled with a combination of acoustic guitar and piano that sounds slightly blues, it sounds great together and it is also great to hear Bradley do another song in this album with the guitar, the song actually sounded great short. I’ll Never Love Again Film version: The sad piano music and lyrics truly makes me feel what Lady Gaga is trying to portray, she sounds heartbroken and regretful by the sound of the lyrics, this is truly represented by the way she raises her pitch a lot. The song takes a lighter tone later in major key, I think this is put in the song to show her new found hope. I would recommend this song to friends definitely. I’ll Never Love Again Extended: This time in the extended version Lady Gaga isn’t cut off with Bradleys solo of the song, and we get to hear her finish. I personally like this version better because it sounds much better when Gaga does her end solo, this version sounds less acoustic and the sound is better quality than the film version. This album seems like it tells the story of the film representing the highs and lows of the film relationship that Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper portray in their characters, I liked this album quite a bit and honestly I would love to see more like it, Gaga and Bradley have done exceptionally well pairing together to create an amazing story.

Ariana Grande’s Album: Sweetener Raindrops: In this short song Ariana’s voice does a beautiful Acapella solo and I enjoyed listening to it, but it was

very short and I think it could’ve been longer. Her voice is outstandingly full of emotion in this track. I love the way she flutters her voice in this, it shows her true talent. Blazed: Ariana features Pharrell Williams in this number, this song had a chilled out vibe and anyone could relax and unwind to this song because its slow and dreamy. I think they were a good pair in this song and I would listen to this song regularly. Light is coming: The start of this song is quite a groovy rap from Nicki Minaj, later on you hear some strange lines from a voice in the background which kind of drowns out Ariana here, the song is repetitive after a while but overall it’s a nice song to listen to while dancing at a party. R.E.M: This song takes me to some kind of fantasy world, the background music is slightly psychedelic and sounds as if Ariana is in a trance, she has a wonderful way of describing her “dream” in the lyrics, I would like to listen to this in high definition headphones. God is a women: This song has a great beat and I like the way her voice has been edited to make her voice slightly enhanced before the chorus, I personally think it’s quite cool to have before the chorus. The lyrics show her to be a feminist, but not in an unbalanced way like today’s feminists, I like her idea of female empowerment it’s a nice idea. Sweetener: I like the songs message in this it is a positive one encouraging people not to be bitter and take their issues out on anyone. I like the piano music in the background it adds a kind of wisdom vibe to the song with it being slow and steady, the other sounds in the background adds a more exciting sound to it. Successful: This song is a jumpy happy track about Ariana enjoying her successful life, she seems to flaunt her talent and good qualities in the lyrics, the background piano music give off a confident, flashy vibe. This song would wake me up in the morning with its hard hitting beat to start of the day. Everytime: I seem to be endlessly bobbing my head to this song everytime I listen to it, the beat makes it easy to get in the rhythm of the song and practically fall into it, then obviously back to reality, but overall I like the lyrics telling some kind of story about her struggle with going back to something, it’s an interesting song to listen to. Breathin: This is a great song to dance to in a party, the music is very hypnotic and can take you to another world if you were to ever dance to it. She seems to be sending some kind of message about how hard it is to be famous, you see this in the lyrics, the background music in minor suggests a serious tone to this song like she’s trying to tell us something No tears left to cry: Ariana has a lot of charisma in this song, it’s full of raw emotion almost like its meant for a specific person. I find that this song is meant to be a serious with her dramatic lyrics and voice adding that kind of vibe to this song, overall I liked listening to this record the background music, lyrics and chords are well put together. Borderline: The trendy beat of this song keeps me listening in until the chorus everytime, background music sounds as if you are floating around. The chorus’s lyrics are very catchy specially “at the borderline, at the borderline” I could sing that 100 times over! I recommend this song to anyone who wants to slow dance.

SAM’S MUSIC SPECIAL

Better off: Ariana sings about a relationship in this song, her voice seems to be full of regret and sadness to fit the mood of the minor key of the background music, the songs lyrics are dramatic almost as if she’s writing a letter to someone, this song would be good to unwind to after a stressful week. Goodnight: This song is like a lullaby, which is what I would expect from a song called Goodnight. The chorus is almost like your in a trance listening to the music in the background is like drifting off to sleep. Her voice is quite soft as well as the music, to create a mellow vibe and make the song dream like Pete Davidson: Ariana seems like she’s fantasizing over a lover in this song. Her lyrics are imaginative implying some feeling has went into writing this song, this song seems as if its dedicated to a lover to make them feel special, the song is like a love letter if you think about it as she is describing their future together. Get well soon: In this song Ariana sings about the more serious side of fame, the lyrics describe her going too fast and neglecting her health, describing that no ones perfect and has ups and downs, this song is a positive message showing that celebrities are not perfect. I liked listening to this song it has quite a good rhythm and soft music that doesn’t drown out the words.

Reviewed in MH Today and playing a sell out show in Brixton Academy in November 2018. This is the new version of their Cult Hit album. Sci Fi Rock !

Starset : Vessels 2.0: The order: This song was short but sounded interesting with the music kind of reminding me of an astronaut floating in space, admittedly I do think they could have added some lyrics to make more people listen to it. Satellite: I liked listening to this one it, the mixture between rock and synthesized music gives the exact effect the composer wants it's like listening to some kind of otherworldly melody and being out in the stars. Frequency: All the cool sound effects in this song reminds me of being inside a blaring speaker at a rock concert. Starset really put the frequency into this song with the awesome beat, I enjoyed listening to it as well. Die for you: Starset does well creating emotion through lyrics in this track with the dramatic sound effects and chords echoing in the background, this song is great to listen to, to get your spirits up. Ricochet: This song is a little repetitive but the lyrics are meaningful and heartfelt along with the music, the electric guitar is a prominent instrument which I quite liked which added to the cool sound effects, this song is a good rock song I would listen to this regularly. Starlight: I like the original name and theme of this song as not many artists would sing a song about starlight and galaxies, the music reminds one of a dream, maybe the song is supposed to remind the listener of watching the stars with a partner. Into the unknown: This song is a parallel universe in itself, the guitar solos sound very electronic reminding me of a static tv or something really like you are going into the unknown, the meaning of this song is somewhat confusing. Gravity of you: This song reminds me of some kind of alien spaceship, the lyrics seem cryptic as if the singer is trying to send a message to the listener, the use of words is powerful in this song to make the person imagine what they could be describing. Back to the Earth: This song needs more lyrics but it’s still pretty good just like the songs in the album so far, the lyrics in this song describe an interesting story of someone's journey back to earth, perhaps in spiritual terms. Last to fall: Listening to this song reminds me of moonwalking at the beginning until it gets to the chorus where the music changes dramatically into a kind of yelling, I don't know what this song is supposed to mean but it reminds me of the end of a war as the singer is the last to fall. Bringing it down: This songs lyrics describe an inner struggle or something with someone else describing them as a creature, nearing the end the song turns into a kind of screamo, the electric guitar solo in the chorus being a little repetitive but it gives the song continuity. Unbecoming: The synthesized beat to this song is psychedelic to listen to, the lyrics describe a story of someone transforming by undergoing a metamorphosis, possibly dying as the song is called unbecoming. Loved listening to this song it’s truly something that soothes the mind.

SAM’S MUSIC SPECIAL

Monster: This is a very rock based song consisting of many electric guitar solos to enhance dramaticness of the song, the lyrics form a masterpiece telling a story of someone who became a monster and wants to be changed back. This song is unique and original unlike many rock songs. Telepathic: This song is most unique out the album consisting of no electric guitar solos and only computer generated sounds and beats, it’s very psychedelic and reminds one of floating in space just by listening to it. It reminds me of sound waves travelling through the air. Everglow: This song starts off very smooth then explodes into a massive voice and electric guitar solo at the end which is really quite cool, like all the songs in the album the lyrics possess a great amount of power and the song is like a black hole sucking the listener in. Bringing it down 2.0: This version of the previous bringing it down, has the same lyrics and electric guitar solos, but the song is enhanced with added violin and other sound effects otherwise it’s not really different from the last one. Die for you Acoustic: The vocals in this version of die for you are amazing accompanied with the strings and bass drums to play the beat, I really like the original but in this one you get to hear the singers real vocal talent with the voice mainly included. Telepathic Acoustic: This song is really different without all the sound effects and computer generated beat, I find I know the lyrics better in this version, Including bass drums adds a different effect to this piece of music but overall I think this version is great. Starlight Acoustic: This songs lyrics sounds clearer and I really like the way they have adapted the sounds in the original song with an acoustic guitar, piano and drums. The song is much better than I thought it would be in acoustic. Ricochet Acoustic: This song sounds more original in the acoustic version, I actually like this song better in acoustic, the use of instruments helps represent the theme of the song better with the piano making it sound more minor. Satellite Acoustic: The acoustic version sounds like a deeper more minor tone song than the last one, this version sounds more emotional than the last one as you can hear the voice more clearly and its easier to pick up the tones, I like being able to hear the voice more it's a little better than being drowned in music, but I still love the original version. Love you to death: This is the only song in the album that features a part in the major tone as most of the album is featured in the minor tone, this song is truly beautiful and is very nice to listen to, the lyrics are very descriptive like a poem. Telepathic Not Your Dope Remix: This song is like a fuse between the songs CG sound effects and modern day pop music, I feel the song is a little to busy now, but I really like the part before I think the beat blends in perfectly with the voice at that point. But overall I do like this song I think it’s a cool take on a song. Satellite Trails Remix: I actually really like this song it’s a great combination of dubstep beat and the original song, loved listening to it. The beat is a really nice dubstep that blends in well with the song, I say it’s well composed. Overall the album is great, the songs were great but I felt a bit too much repetition with all the different versions of the songs, I feel the acoustic songs deserve their own album and also the remixes. I think this album should have consisted more of 2.0. Songs instead of most of the same songs from the last vessels. I feel like adding these all in one album kind of made the album too long.

Drop pink Album: Patchwork Debut for Mill Hill Indie Rockers Circus song: The slow tempo and the lyrics in this song reminds me of some kind of slow dance, the electric guitar solo in the background sounded like a cool version of circus music and overall a really chilled out vibe to this song, liked listening to it. On a Friday: This song is quite original with the 80’s like electric guitar solo and drum beat which reminds me of sitting in a concert, the lyrics describe somebody's romantic longing for someone which makes me think this song is meant for a romantic dance or party. Hold your tongue: This is definitely one song that makes me want to play the air guitar with that electric guitar and drum solos in the chorus which gets stuck in your head after a while, this is a great rock song and I imagine someone blaring this out of their speakers in the summer. Loved it. Under lock and key: This is a relatable song about a teenage love, I think the background music is supposed to remind the listener of innocence as it is uplifting and catchy and I definitely like listening to it. The lyrics describe an infatuation making it pleasant and nostalgic to listen to. The sound effects made by the electric guitar. Hypnotised: I liked the beat of this song it’s very fast and loud which adds emphasis on the lyrics especially in the chorus when the singer says “Hypnotised”. The lyrics describe a fantasy theme implying that their love interest has hypnotised them, personally I like listening to this song.

MILL HILL’s CULTURAL SCENE| FEATURE by ADAM MORLEY The arts and literature have always played a big part in our cultural heritage. This is the land of Shakespeare, the Beatles, Turner, Banksy, the romantic poets, Sherlock Holmes, Doctor Who and Harry Potter! The arts are in our genes from Pantomime to Opera and the last night of the proms! I have been fortunate to earn my living directing theatre in the West End and regionally, film and television and guest lecturing at drama schools and universities. I have seen the impact the arts can have on communities, families and individuals. The economic benefits festivals can have across the UK and the physical and mental wellbeing that participation in the arts has. Being active with dance and the independent thought, confidence building that drama brings can have a lifelong positive effect. Keeping active physically has so much health benefits and for those of us, like myself, who don’t enjoy sports or going to the gym, a dance class is a great way to keep fit and be sociable. Mill Hill has been my home for most of my life and when I started to create professional immersive family shows this year at the library, I saw first-hand the passion and enthusiasm families have for the arts and literacy. I discovered a rich heritage of arts in the area, from the amazing Music Festival (back in 2019) to the Mill Hill Musical Theatre Company founded in 1954 who’s recent production was the brilliant ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ and a total sell out. There are a variety of dance classes available for children and adults as well as LAMDA tutors, singing teachers, art classes and music lessons, we have it all in our neighbourhood and I am so happy to be able to add to that incredible tapestry. Our aim is to provide West End quality, reasonably priced performances on our doorstep. As schools are sadly forced to cut back on the arts, these external classes and private teachers can help supplement the decreasing creative opportunities that are vital and make a big difference in children’s lives. Within the area you have Big Time Academy, Jump Up Ballet, SNTS, Little Darlings Ballet school. BOP, Caterpillar Music, Kangaroo Kids, DWL, Upstairs at the Adam and Eve and many others! As well as my very own Pantomime ‘Beauty and the Beanstalk’. As life becomes more and more virtual and new generations grow with social media as the norm, the arts can provide a platform for expression and confidence building that is more important than ever. Social isolation, mental health issues and obesity are growing concerns that the arts can help tackle. I have created shows and workshops for children and adults with complex needs helping them interpret the world and learn vital life skills, and seen the joy a show brings. One of my proudest moments was at Mill Hill library this summer for the ‘Wizard of Oz Experience’. Seeing audiences with so much diversity and differently abled children and adults showed me the power of the arts and how it helps unite communities and promote understanding and friendship. Dont forget to get your tickets for the Pantomime ( See ad opposite ) and next month I will feature an interview with JAMES PHELPS from Harry Potter for everyone to read in Mill Hill Today. This month we are delighted to have ADAM MORLEY write for our arts pages which we hope will become a regular event. Adam is highly regarded nationally for his work in theatre and arts. He is a MIll Hill local and has recently started the brilliant classes at the NW7Hub and is bringing the first ever Professional Panto to Mill Hill this year

LONDON ARTS H REVIEW

MHMTC raising the (fiddler on the) roof Six months of planning, rehearsal, hard work and sweat - but no blood or tears… we don’t think - came together in October, with our staging of classic musical Fiddler On The Roof. And we were delighted with the positive response from audiences. The singing, acting, choreography, orchestra and the set, lighting and sound were all cited for praise, which makes all the time and effort put in by everyone from the cast and director David Coleman to the production crew and MHMTC’s committee really worthwhile. We are an amateur group, so the hours we devote to the shows is voluntary and comes out of our free time, taking us away from our family and friends, especially during show week of our main autumn production. It’s the busiest eight days of the year. From the get-in of the set on the Saturday 20 October, and the band call and tech rehearsal the next day, to Monday’s dress rehearsal and the five performances from Wednesday 24 to Saturday 27 October, everything was focused on making Fiddler as slick and entertaining as possible. So, to hear feedback such as “it’s the best amateur show I’ve ever seen” from a former professional music-hall performer is just amazing. David Rose put in a barnstorming performance as Tevye, the poor milkman who finds the very foundations of his life in rocked by his daughters’ disregard for tradition and the shocking act of being driven out of his community’s tumbledown but beloved village of Anatevka by the Russians. He was wonderfully supported by Clare Shah as Tevye’s bossy wife Golde, Corinne Ward, Kim Llewellyn and Saju Vaswani as his three feisty daughters, Rob Murray, Rob Brown and James Baniecki as their suitors. There’s also Nigel Kelly as lovelorn butcher Lazar Wolf, Barbara Shapiro as matchmaker Yente, and Conrad Cohen as Mordechai the innkeeper. This could not have been achieved without artistic director David Coleman, who was brilliant in teasing out the comic and poignant nuances of all the characters and scenarios in the story. Gemma Tate’s classic choreography and Derek Holland’s musical direction complemented his vision. A special mention must also go to the very good friends of the company, who also come in and help with essential jobs including lighting (Rob Barker), stage hands (managed efficiently by Anne Freitag), front of house, the bar, food preparation, selling programmes, costumes, props, prompt and poster design. After the final show on the evening of Saturday 27 October, the cast and crew had then to dismantle the set, take down the hired lights, and clear all the bits and pieces needed for the production from Hartley Hall. And it was at 12.30am that we had completed the task.

MILL HILL RUGBY CLUB Celebrating 80 Years

Club News:

We are very happy to report that the season is off to a flying start for Mill Hill with no losses for the first fifteen thus far, with the second string doing very well too. We’ve had a small increase in supporters attending home games which has been a delight to see, we hope numbers and interest in the club continues to grow in the coming games. It’s a pleasure to report on the growth of our Project Rugby mixed ability side, now with 20+ on the books! This certainly played a part in the wonderful success of winning 3/5 games at the Project Rugby Tournament which was hosted at the home of Saracens, Allianz Park. Unfortunately, not all the news is good – Women’s training has been suspended, this is due to lack of numbers only having reached an average of 4 Women turning up over the past few months. We still wish whole heartedly to revive ladies’ rugby here at Mill Hill Rugby Club, so this is by no means the end. We intend to re-group and come up with a better plan to run with again. On to lighter news! There’s much going on, to which all are invited. We’ve the good fortune of hosting the Barnet Eye Community Awards on December the 14th, there’ll be music, awards, and great tales from all over the community of Barnet – not one to miss! During November we’ll be showing all the Autumn Internationals as well as being open for all Saracens games as per usual. The atmosphere is electric during international rugby, so we highly recommend if anyone wants to see the best a club can offer to come on down! To keep up to date with all things Mill Hill RFC, you can follow the latest updates via our Twitter, Facebook, and our website. The league results: Mill Hill vs. Uxbridge – 55-19 (W) Mill Hill vs. London French – 28-8 (W) Mill Hill vs. Cuffley – 38-7 (W) Mill Hill vs. Bexley – 45-10 (W) Mill Hill vs. Pinner & Grammarians – 45-0 (W)
