If there is one place that the whole of Mill Hill gathers each year it is the Annual Firework Display at Copthall. For many years the Lions and local traders ran the Annual Firework display but now it is jointly run by Saracens and the Mill Hill Neighbourhood Forum. The Allianz Park stands provide the best views and facilities of any display in London. It is on our doorstep so lets make sure we go along. We’ll be there.

LONDON’s BEST FIREWORK DISPLAY! CLICK HERE FOR TICKETS TO SUPPORT MILL HILL

TICKETS Many people attended the Open Day for the NW7 Hub in October and the proceeds from this display will go towards supporting the work of the NW7 Hub. If we want to see Mill Hill continuing to develop as a community then the Hub is essential to bring everyone together and provide a framework for the community to come together. So this month we would love to see everyone come along to get the project off the ground AND have a great family night out.

EATING & DRINKING BAW, CANNONS AND MILL & BREW CONTINUE TO IMPRESS THE RESTAURANT CLUB On social media you must check out the accounts of many of our local restaurants.

Mill & Brew have a brilliant INSTAGRAM account which posts pictures of their stunning meals and anyone seeing these posts will almost certainly want to visit this impressive addition to the Broadway. It gets very busy especially on weekends but it is so large and spacious that it is a real treat to go there. Cannons Fish and Chips have added a few additions to their menu but we regularly visit for Fish and Chips - and can say that the chips are the best we have ever tasted and portions are large. The fish is obviously very fresh and again it is cooked to perfection. If you have not been then you are missing out on what will become a legendary takeaway and restaurant. It is better than the Carpe D’Oro in our opinion where we used to go. That is how good it is and prices are cheaper !! BAW continues to attract huge crowds every day with its incredible menu and possibly the best prices for top quality food in North London. Again it is a must visit.

Why not join this fast growing and exciting club if you like eating out . Based in Mill Hill and including discounts for many Mill Hill restaurants. FULL DETAILS FROM www.therestaurantclub.com

FEATURE | Italian Charity Cycle Ride

by Richard Logue

As an ambassador for the charity Co-Operation Ireland I particularly enjoy taking part in regular sporting fundraising challenges to raise funds for the charity. I ran the New York Marathon in 2010, trekked to the Inca ruins of Machu Pichu in 2012, cycled across Cuba in 2014 and took part in an emotional cycle ride linking the War Graves of Flanders last year. This year my challenge was to cycle though Tuscany for 400km over five days. Tuscany is easily one of my favourite places, particularly in the Autumn when there is still warm sunshine. However from a cycling perspective, Tuscany’s terrain is very hilly. For someone who finds the smallest of hills here in Mill Hill a challenge; this would be something I would need to be prepared for. Throughout the summer I have been commuting to work in Southwark by bicycle, a distance of 13 miles. Getting from Mill Hill to Central London by bike is relatively easy as the journey is mostly downhill, but obviously the return journey is mostly uphill. A particularly bad hill for me is East Heath Road in Hampstead; it climbs at a steep rate from Hampstead Heath Overground station to the former Jack Straws Castle pub for a mile. Much of my practice for the ride involved cycling up this hill most evenings after work. Mill Hill has a number of very steep roads so I could be spotted hauling myself up Bittacy Hill and Hammers Lane at the weekends as well. Of course these hills are relatively short compared to what we were to face in Italy.

We set off on Saturday 14th October for Pisa. Our first night was spent at an Agriturismo Hotel just outside Pisa which operates as an Olive Oil farm. From there we cycled to Vinci, Leonardo’s birth place, via the beautiful walled city of Lucca. The run to Lucca was relatively flat, but from Lucca onwards we climbed steadily until the last 2km to our hotel, another Agriturismo. The last 2km to the Hotel was our first really challenging hill but more was to come! Our Monday morning run to Florence from Vinci began with some good downhill spins and although it was a fairly long journey we mostly followed the path of the River Arno right to the City Centre. We then had a rest day to explore Florence. We set off for Siena from Florence on Wednesday morning . From the start we climbed steeper and steeper hills until we reached our lunch stop at Greve in Chianti, some 31km south east of Florence. We had even more challenging hills until we were about 10km outside of Siena, a distance of 40km in total from Greve in Chianti. I was glad to have a supply of energy bars and bananas! The final 10km to Siena was downhill but we had to share the road with heavy traffic including trucks and buses. We were certainly glad to reach our hotel that night!

Thursday provided the greatest challenge of all. We were lulled into what turned out to be a false sense of security as the run from Siena to our lunch stop at Colle di Valle d’Elsa was relatively flat. After lunch we set off for the walled city of Volterra, which we discovered was at the top of a murderous hill climb! We crawled up hairpin bend after hairpin bend only to discover the last 5km was even steeper than before. Where we got the energy to climb so much I do not know but when we got to our hotel my first act was to jump into the hotel’s ice cold swimming pool! Friday was our final day of cycling; back down the hairpin bends to Pisa. This was really recovery time and our final night was back at the Agriturismo where had set off from on Sunday morning. Along the way we faced very challenging climbs but combined with the spectacular scenery of Tuscany and our group’s collective sense of humour and comradery we took on the challenge and beat it.

Co-operation Ireland is the leading peace-building charity on the island of Ireland. They work with divided communities in Northern Ireland to build mutual trust and understanding in what remains a very divided society, long after the Troubles have ended. Young people are given a chance to get away from paramilitary groups and organised crime. My fundraising page is still open at https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/RichardLogue if you wish to give a donation. Special thanks to those of you who have already donated; your money really does make a difference.

PREVIEW | French Market Who are the French Market traders?

The ‘France at Home’ market is made up of an association of traders who travel by ferry from Normandy to the United Kingdom with authentic French street food, delicatessen and cheese, home wares, gifts, and fashion. They travel to town centres throughout the UK most weeks of the year, and first visited Mill Hill in November 2015. When will the market be open? The French Market will be returning to Mill Hill Broadway on Friday 10 and Saturday 11 November. The market will be open from 9am to 6pm both days. What are some of the foods that will be offer? The market sells delicious cheese, sausages, fresh bread and bakery items, olives and dried fruits, and seasonal vegetables such as onions, tomatoes, artichokes, and specialty garlic. The hot food offer includes paella, garlic potatoes and Surimi prawns – a white fish that is shaped and flavoured like a prawn – and sweet and savoury crepes. Will there be anything at the market that would make a good holiday gifts? Yes! The French market will have gorgeous cashmere jumpers, vintage French music, posters, and DVDs, beautiful baskets, as well as small toys that are great for stocking fillers or a night of Hanukkah. Where will the market be located? The French Market stalls will be located between Santander and Mill Hill Wines with live music on-stage in the new Town Square area and a mobile bar from the Adam & Eve. We hope the community will come by to do some shopping, have a bite to eat and a drink, and enjoy the entertainment in the Pocket Park. Where can I park to come to the market? On Fridays many of the side streets are unrestricted from 12 noon and free all day on Saturdays. On the weekend the ‘pay by phone’ Bunns Lane car park offers three hours of free parking. You can also pay to park on the Broadway as usual. What is the next event in the calendar? The next event will be the Mill Hill Christmas Market and Lights Switch On from Friday 1 to Saturday 2 December, featuring a mix of delicious street food, gorgeous gifts, health and well-being products, cakes, French cheese, and more. There will be carol singing and entertainment on stage, as well as warming mulled wine and cider from the Adam & Eve’s mobile bar for both days of the festivities. What is the best way to get information about Mill Hill Markets? Mill Hill Markets is an initiative organised and delivered in partnership by Mill Hill Neighbourhood Forum and Vibe Market. The markets aim to increase dwell time and footfall for the town centre, and help make Mill Hill an even better place to live, work and visit. Information about the markets can be found online from the following:

Discussion Starter Polycentric?...no not a parrot chasing its tail! The previous London Plan was highly Central Zone Centric. This report recognises the need for London to realise the value of local and notably local Town Centres which have been under pressure with the advent of Internet Shopping. People really like the personal service offered by small independent shops and already in the USA large shopping malls are falling out of favour. We will probably follow. This report gives recommendations that we should all be keen to implement to make our Town Centre not just viable but thriving again...it makes sense. John Gillett

LOCAL HISTORY LOCAL SERVICES A Brief Look

During the last 7 years nearly 100 years of history has been re-written by the Austerity policies of our recent Governments. Here is a brief look at how those services began and where. In 1931 the Parish of Edgware became part of Hendon U.D. with a population of 115,682 making it the largest urban district in the country this led to Borough Status the following year - 1932. Once Borough status was achieved local services were then provided, opening new schools and health centres and preserving open spaces for recreation. The Library Service improved by the opening of the Central Libary in The Burroughs Hendon in 1929 and was joined by new branches in Golders Green in 1935 and Mill Hill in 1937. The Metropolitan Police college also opened at the same time in 1935. Post war reconstruction was also organised through the Borough Council with a meeting in March 1945 calling for Education and Housing to be top of the agenda. Austerity was happening after World War 2 but our ancestors had a completely different approach to it. They put people - housing and libraries first. Unable to expand (Yes they wanted to expand) the Library Service in the Borough they arranged for a Travelling Libary in 1947. They also buit over 1,300 new homes between 1945 and 1952 in traditional units. Industrial sites were taken for housing. Further industrial improvements were made by opening Endeavour House to house various industrial concerns. The GLC was created in 1963 leading to the London Borough of Barnet in 1965. This now included Hendon (with Mill Hill) and Finchley, Barnet, East Barnet and Friern Barnet. interestingly, Hendon(Mill Hill) at this time had

the most highly developed services and its councillors fought a protracted but ultimately unsuccessful battle to name the new Borough Hendon.... Sadly, during the 1980s cuts began to Services in the whole of the UK. However, it was not until the Great Crash & Recession of 2008 (and continuing) that all services except those that were statutory were cut by the policy of Austerity. Our current local and national politicians will be judged harshly by history. You only have to look at the past to see how successive generations have always put people first and always cut services last not first. However, Mill Hill is once again fighting back showing the spirit that we had in the 1930s to 1965. Then we had the best services in the UK. The best community. The new Neighbourhood Forum, the myriad of new initiatives including Public Meetings, The NW7 Hub, Markets and Church led food bank collections, mean that once again as a community we can pull together. (with thanks to the London Borough of Barnet Archives & Local Studies Centre )

MH Today is a non politically aligned paper. We only represent the community. All political opinions are equal. Yet, our agenda is clear and simple we want to learn from history and work together with the whole community to create an oasis of friendliness and concern in North London.

NEXT MONTH in LOCAL HISTORY ALIENS IN MILL HILL A look at Immigration

We hope to feature many local buidlings and personal memories of Mill Hill in this section. So if you have a story to tell or some photos you wish to share of OLD MILL HILL ! Then please do.

You are warmly invited to the Annual Mill Hill Churches Advent Festival Every year this takes place with a choir formed from Mill Hill churches and it is a very special event which signifies the coming of light into darkness. A large congregation always comes along and it would be fantastic to see everyone come along and attend this very lovely service which features music presented by local people to start the Festive Season off with remembering what it is all about. Please see the Mill Hill Guide for details of all other Churches during December and for details of other faiths celebrations during this period. Please contact St Michael’s Church direct for more information about this service. The details are all in the Mill Hill Guide. There is also a Christingle Service on Christmas Eve at 5p.m for those who cant stay up late on Christmas Eve for Midnight Mass.

CHRISTMAS is coming The lights are up on Broadway awaiting their lighting on Friday 1 December ( see below ) and soon the furniture and Christmas Tree will be set up. The shops are beginning to fill with seasonal items and we hope all local shops will have lights and festive decorations as usual this year to make The Broadway and all other shopping areas of Mill Hill really welcoming. Please visit our local traders at this time of year. Many rely on a good festive season for their profit for the year - and we all know how depressing empty shops and buildings can be - they also drive down house prices and encourage local crime and vandalism. One way to make sure we have a lovely area is to shop local and make sure that all our businesses thrive in these difficult times. The Christmas Market started last year and was an instant success. This year all stalls are already full with an amazing music line up in the new town square on both days from 1p.m. In addition the Christmas Tree and lights ceremony on Friday with reindeer will be the talk of the area for weeks to come. Bring the whole family down and we encourage you to combine the trip with a visit to a local restaurant or our amazing new Fish and Chip takeaway, The ADAM and EVE bar will be open for festive drinks where I am sure you will find local Forum members - residents association - local business people - and councillors gathered for festive drinks at each of the ceremonies ( See Below ) and it is very kid friendly. Our area is really coming back to life due to the efforts of many people working in our Churches, organisations, schools, busniesses and helped by the Neighbourhood Forum and NW7Hub. Now with 6 market weekends with music a year - flowers on broadway through the summer - Annual Firework Display - Premiership Rugby - a new town square - New Shop fronts in Salcombe - Christmas Market - a Chrstmas Tree and an annual Town Guide - the future is looking fantastic in Marvellous Mill Hill. It is a fantastic place to live and work and we should be proud of where we live, So come celebrate together this Christmas.

SPOTLIGHT SWEET TREE FIELDS FARM This month we want to highlight a special project that many people may not know about. The excellent work that is done here is known to its clients and it is based in Mill Hill. Visit their website if you want to help this very wonderful project and find out more. We also highlight their star donkeys KEANE and SPLAT.

“We are Sweet Tree Fields farm, based behind the Rising Sun in Mill Hill. We provide guided activities and training at allotment, farm, outdoor or educational sites for adults and young people. The SweetTree Farming For All team have the experience and skills to work with children, adults and older people with a variety of care and support needs including; learning disabilities, mental health issues, dementia, physical disabilities, offending histories, educational exclusion and alcohol/substance dependencies.

KEANE and SP Keane is a 103cm tall brown gelding, (male), with a white spot in between his eyes. He has a pale muzzle and belly, and no visible dorsal stripe up his back and across his shoulders, as is common with lots of donkeys. Splat is a 99cm tall, dark brown gelding, (male), with a pale muzzle and underbelly. All his hooves are black and he has a dark stripe down his back and across his shoulders. Keane was born at The Donkey Sanctuary in the Republic of Ireland in 2013. Since birth, Keane has been lucky enough to have been given lots of love and attention and has been given thorough medical examinations to make sure he was in good health throughout adolescence. This is where Keane met Splat, and they became friends. In November 2015, they were moved across to Devon to avoid the sanctuary in the Republic of Ireland getting too crowded.

“Your support goes a long way in keeping our donkeys happy and healthy on SweetTree Fields Farm. We love having them on our farm. They give our clients a chance to interact with large intelligent animals that respond varyingly to different body language and tones of voice. Equine therapy is proven to be beneficial to lots of people, so Keane and Splat can actually enrich the lives of our clients. Your donations go towards their food, vet bills, enrichment toys and general physical and mental wellbeing. By supporting Keane and Splat, you are ensuring their quality of life will be as fulfilling and stimulating as possible.”

www.sweettreefarmingforall.org.uk For more information please visit our website or contact us via: enquiries@sweettreefarmingforall.org.uk or call 0207 644 9505

PLAT at home In Devon, they received yet more love and attention to help them feel less nervous about moving home, and they were given another medical exam. It wasn’t long before Keane and Splat, were assessed as being ready to rehome, and they were moved to the Holding Base to receive extra individual attention and training to prepare them for a new home. Here they were fostered by a staff member who had children. in April, 2016, Keane and Splat were specifically selected to join us at SweetTree Farming For All due to their calm and kind personalities, and due to the fact they got on so well with children they were thought to make a perfect match for our client group. So they made their move over to SweetTree Fields Farm in Mill Hill, where they are being lovingly looked after and spoilt with attention from our staff and all who come to visit.

VENUE FEATURE | Phoenix Cinema In Finchley is Mill Hill’s nearest cinema. It is independent and community run. Unlike the unfriendly and highly priced multiplexes the Phoenix is a beautiful cinema with atmosphere and old fashioned values more like a theatre than a modern cinema. We went to see a showing live from New York of Norma the Opera by the Metropolitan Opera. Although these screenings are expensive they are very popular and draw huge and often sell out audiences to the Phoenix. They also live stream from the Royal Opera House - The Bolshoi Ballet - and National Theatre at prices under £20. As well as this there is a full and varied programme of movies. These include new releases and old favourites. The Foyer is spacious and you can pick up your tickets that are preordered by seat online or buy on the day. On the First floor there is a fantastic cafe with loads of tables and wide selection of very good food and coffees and drinks at very decent prices. The auditorium is a gem. Raked and in red with many art deco features. It is worth a visit just to sit in this room and admire. Go to web site for address and all performance information

ALBUM of the Month REVIEWED BY THE UK’s NO.1 ROCK DJ GUY BELLAMY

SKAM The Amazing Memoirs of Geoffrey Goddard

They say on their Twitter page that they rock harder than you would believe. It’s true. British three-piece SKAM return next month with their career-defining album to date. The culmination of two early albums and a schedule of relentless touring, all roads lead to the new album – The Amazing Memoirs of Geoffrey Goddard. It marks a high point for the band as they land a mature, intelligent and sophisticated album that will command attention and beg the question (yet again) why on earth the country’s bright emerging rock bands are not garnering more airplay than they deserve. Casting aside notions of ‘concept’ album and ‘prog’ – conjuring up images of goblins, wizards and dragons … which would be out of place on a 1930’s RAF base – the SKAM album is framed around the story of Squadron Leader Geoffrey Goddard, a test pilot from 1935, who is a victim of strange forces that jolt him through time. The lyrical content of the album is centre stage, and the relationship between the words and music pulls the listener in. The album is a body of work, rather than a collection of songs and there is a coherent musical identity throughout. The songs work as chapters of an album to capture well the sound of SKAM today and demonstrate how profoundly the band has evolved in a relatively short time. From the slightly predictable gothic /black metal imagery of the early video for ‘The Holy City’, the new album sees the band pushing new creative boundaries in terms of narrative, concept and the clever and purposeful interplay of words, music, film and imagery. The result is The Amazing Memoirs of Geoffrey Goddard delivers an arresting and totally immersive, widescreen experience and confirms SKAM’s place at the forefront of the new generation of contemporary British rock. The album opens with an atmospheric narrative that sets out the story for the album. But before any SKAM fan gets a chance to fear they might be in for a single track prog extravaganza, the music kicks in in electrifying form – long before any pixies, wizards or goblins are given a moment to scramble their Spitfires for take-off! ‘Between the Eyes’ does exactly what it says on the tin. It’s a three-minute opus packed with dramatic riffs, arresting choruses, an expressive guitar solo, and SKAM’s signature tight rhythm section. As well as opening the album with purpose and energy, this choice of opening track also makes clear to the listener the importance of paying attention to the lyrics: The album is, after all, a story. With ‘The Iron Cross’ the pounding pace continues with a feel of early Rush, and ‘Otherside’ delivers a soaring vocal performance. This leads into ‘Take It Or Leave It’ – for me the album goes up a further gear here. With this track we have another three-minute powerhouse, that in another age one could imagine riding radio airwaves and clocking in the charts. So many rising bands are penning great ‘singles’ at the moment that stand well on their own, and in my book ‘Take It Or Leave It’ sits in good company alongside the likes of Massive Wagons’ ‘Ratio’ Trucker Diablo’s ‘Let’s Just Ride’ or Theia’s ‘Home.’ Mid way through the album, ‘Peace of mind’ delivers a complete change of pace – a track that opens the album up, giving it more space and breadth. While SKAM is known to its loyal fans for up-tempo banging tunes, it’s the perhaps unexpected gems like ‘Pace of Mind’ that stand the band out and really showcase their underlying music talents. This song is subtle and exercises restraint – which makes its power all the more profound. For fans of ‘The Wire’ this new track will be a treat. But there are more bangers to follow: ‘Two Worlds’ is a gutsy, direct heavy anthem that’s full of swagger and attitude. And ‘Bring the Rain’ extolls that special sound that’s pretty unique to a rock three-piece. With this track you can appreciate the way the musicians are working together to create their sound, something we referenced earlier in the year with our review of The Texas Flood album. Next up. ‘Fading Before The Sun’ – an early single for the album which we played on six consecutive rock shows. The song went down well as a single, but it can be better appreciated here within the context and flow of the full album. With ‘New Dawn’ SKAM has possibly saved the best ‘til last, a song that sums up well the spirit of the whole album, and which alone would work as a drive time belter for radio. The way albums start and finish matters, and with The Amazing Memoirs of Geoffrey Goddard, SKAM deliver in trumps on both counts. There’s something about three pieces from the new generation of rock taking root across the UK at the moment. They produce a different sound and their albums have different feel: powerful, intense, a live feel to the albums and live shows where the music is both direct and vital. SKAM embody what is right with today’s young rock scene – and thanks to The Amazing Memoirs of Geoffrey Goddard they have just delivered their finest, most complete and most original album to date. Following up this album won’t be easy. Let’s hope Mrs Goddard wrote some memoirs too! The album is released on 17 November 2017. Pre-order direct and support the band at http://skamuk.com Other exclusive merch available includes artwork, signed calendars and posters, drum skins, VIP packages and album launch show tickets Two Great Music Stories interview specials with the band will be airing in early November. Friday, 17 November – The Musician, Leicester Sunday, 26 November – The Black Heart, Camden, London

REVIEWS & LISTINGS NEEDED We said we would report back from the AIR TRAFFIC tour at Islington Assembly Hall. It was a sold out night. The audience were treated to all the songs from the Fractured Life album and seemed to know every word ! The new single Almost Human was also played and then the announcement everyone was hoping for.....more dates for next year and tickets have just gone on sale for KOKO in April. Chris Wall the lead singer also teased us with the possibility of a new album which would be incredible because the first album was mainly written before they signed to EMI back in 2007. REVIEW ALICE IN WONDERLAND ROYAL BALLET SEPT - OCT Royal Opera House

This has to be one of the best ballets ever produced. Sold out for its whole run and it was delightful. It has everything for all the family. Telling the story of Alice from her time in the garden in Oxford to her descent into the rabbit hole and her adverntures. Using projections, magix, incredible shrinking and enlarging sets, brilliant costumes and backed by music that is stuning by Joby Talbot ( who has done WInters Tale for the Royal Ballet and the msuic for SING the film ) The Royal Ballet love to perform this ballet. It is real fun with colour and variety of choreograhpy by the great CHRISTOPHER WHEELDON who has An American in Paris currently on at the Dominion Theatre. The Mad Hatter is actually a tap dancing character which had the audience cheering. As for the kictchen scene - it was dark and scary. The trial is also staged wonderfully and all the compaby of dancers move around the stage with purpose and with style. Our favourite costume was the Queen of Hearts. We wont spoil it but she has a number including a show stopper when it opens up to reveal......... When tickets go on sale for this the next time it is produced they will be like gold dust and we are certainly going to go again. It is likely to become as popular as the Nutrcracker and Sleeping Beauty around the world’s ballet companies. Made in London. A story from Oxford. This is a fantasic achievement by all at the Royal Ballet.

LES VEPRES SICIANNES ROYAL OPERA OCTOBER Royal Opera House

This production has only been produced on one other occasion at the Royal Opera House. It is a massive Opera with huge cast including ballet dancers and the set features a theatre which moved around the stage. The opera by Verdi was a spectacle and if you wanted proof that the ROH spends its grant money wisely then this production is evidence that the grants are needed if this scale of work is to be produced. The cost of this production for those watching woud probably have been in the 1000s if it were costed at actual cost of production. That is why the ROH is such good value with thousands of tickets under £20 that are available for each season and most tickets under £50. They go fast though, because they are such great value. We were lucky to get one to see the opening performance of this opera. It did not disappoint. The story is quite long and yet the amazing sets and amazing music and voices meant that it was alawys exciting to watch. Without going into details the opera has also got some ballet dance parts and some massive crowd scenes - mostly when the Opera House set was on stage. An opera which was an amazing experience. I wonder why more people dont make these Operas the first thing they attend in the West End. There is nothing else to touch them. They are on a scale that is even larger than the biggest West End shows and for a fraction of the ticket cost, There are expensive £200 pound seats if you want luxury at the ROH but for most people the Amphitheatre and Balcony seats are good enough and you can see the view from the back part of the Amphitheatre in the photos which shows the excellent view from the central seats. We will bring you reviews of Lucia Di Lammermoor and Semiramide next month from the ROH. We wont get technical or give blow by blow accounts. Just give you a general view and feeling of what it is like to attend London’s best and cheapest night out. You should try it for yourselves if you have not already !

SEMELE Concert Performance Handel ORCHESTRA OF AGE OF ENLIGHTENMENT OCT Royal Festival Hall This was a concert performance on a Wednesday night in the Royal Festival Hall. Once again £10 tickets gave the view that you see below from the balcony. An excellent view with great acoustics from the balcony and very comforrtable seats. Semele is one of Handel’s Opera or Oratorios. It caused a stir with his fans when first produced because it was not in line with his usual Christian pieces. In fact is quite a sexy opera and about the Gods. Possibly its risque plot has meant that it does not get performed too often. However, it has some stunning arias and the music is what you would expect from one of the greatest composers. The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment are totally amazing, They made the score come to life in a way that very few others do. Conducted by one of the World’s leading baroque conductors the whole evening was a huge success and the audience around us were very happy. The leading singers who moved to the front of the stage from chairs on the left and right ( see photo below ) were excellent as well. If you live in Mill Hill then getting to the Royal Festival Hall is easy. Just take the train to Blackfriars and get off and use the South Bank exit. Then you walk along the river walk by the Mondiran Hotel in the Sea Containers Building and the ITV studios and National Theatre and after anout 10 minutes of a lovely walk by the river you come to the Festival Hall. It is a magical walk on the way back with fairy lights in the trees and the City of London facing you lit up with St Pauls. If you are a romantic and if you love London like we do this has to be the best walk to a venue you can make. Tickets for Royal Festival Hall start at £10 for nearly all concerts and you can get discounts if you check their concessions policy at half price. So for £5 this could have been your seat to a top concert if you are a pensioner or on benefits.

REVIEW THE BARBER OF SEVILLE / AIDA ENGLIUSH NATIONAL OPERA OCTOBER 11 / OCTOBER 20 COLISSEUM After featuring these two operas in the last few issues we went along in October to both. AIDA This was a new production. The staging varied from in front of the curtain to large set pieces and to some boxed stages. Though this kept things interesting the best parts of the opera were the full stagings with impressive crowd scenes and scenery. The main draw for the audience was AIDA and ENO had attracted the World’s leading opera singer in the role to the first part of the run. She did not disappoint and acted and sang with great clarity against a very loud orchestral reading of the score. Overall a good performance but not at the level usually seen at ENO.

BARBER OF SEVILLE This was a revival of the famous Jonathan Miller production which is surely one of the best Barber Opera productions ever made anywhere. Funny from the first scene with superb sets and direction that hammed up the comedy to its fullest extent. The performances by the leading characters in this opera were excellent and it was obvious how much fun they were having, The performance was totally sold out and great enjoyment was had by all who attended. A must see and hopefully it will be revived again and again. Coming Up Soon from ENO : Handel’s Rodelina - a new opera called Marnie - and next year La Traviata - Lohen-

WHAT’S ON| Mill Hill Jazz Club NOV 01 THE MARTIN SPEAKE QUARTER

Martin was inspired to take up the saxophone at the age of 16. and studied Classical Saxophone at Trinity College of Music, where he was awarded the prestigious Dame Ruth Railton prize for woodwind playing. He first came to public attention as a founder member of the award winning Saxophone Quartet ‘Itchy Fingers’ when a host of young musicians including Courtney Pine, Andy Sheppard, Django Bates, Iain Ballamy and the big bands of the Jazz Warriors and Loose Tubes were acclaimed as the leaders of an emerging generation of UK jazz talent. With Itchy Fingers, Martin toured Europe, South America, Africa, Britain and the USA, and recorded two albums. Martin Speake is one of the most interesting and rewarding alto saxophonists now playing jazz on any continent. A strikingly talented improviser with a seemingly bottomless well of inspiration. Martin Speake’s playing can be as enigmatic as his writing. The lyricism and subtlety of both his written and improvised melodies sometimes unfold so gradually that one needs to take a mental step back to absorb it all”. MILL HILL RUGBY CLUB Celebrating 80 Years

October Review:

October has been a good month all round at Mill Hill RFC – The 1st XV finish the month at the top of the league with some impressive results and rugby respectively. The 2nd XV have seen many of their league games rescheduled by the opposition however in their stead they’ve been playing friendlies with equally mixed, yet always positive results. We also saw the return of the Veterans XV who had a narrow loss against their Belsize Park counterparts. We’re happy to report new faces are appearing down the club to both play and support. Especially pleased that they’re coming from the immediate surrounding community! Our neighbours Saracens have been off to a winning start too which means we’ve had many come through our doors including away supporters from Sale Sharks, Wasps, and Ospreys. All have been extremely complimentary of the Mill Hill community and area, enjoying the facilities on the Broadway, their journeys to and from Allianz Park, and of course the reception given here at Mill Hill Rugby Club!

Mill Hill 1st & 2nd XV will continue to seek winning ways with league games throughout the month, typically one game will be at home if the other is away. We’re hoping to extend our player base with more new faces from the community. Our aim for both sides is to be at the top of their respective leagues by the Christmas break. As always when Saracens have home Premiership and European cup games this November we’ll be open to all visitors.

Saracens
