As we enter Spring and the sun is shining as this is written, we want to congratulate the Mill Hill Bowling Club on their 100th Anniversary. An incredible milestone for a sporting club and one which can inspire all our local organisations to keep going at what they do. Local organisations are essential for social cohesion and provide much pleasure and friendships for those who live in our area. We do suggest you read the Mill HIll Guide online at ISSUU which we also publish. In there is a list of most of our local organisations with weblinks and contact details - as well as a brief description of what they do. If you have the time why not choose one or two to join. For instance the Bowling Club play through the summer in Mill Hill Park in a beautiful setting. They provide free instruction for beginners and have many social events through the year. Just call in and see them when you are in the Park or contact them through their website. The Broadway has recently had a spring clean by the Council and road repairs. The new Town Square is really settling in well and is busy most of every day. There are some empty shops but most are now leased to be opened. We will bring you the openings as the happen. We have a happy, historic and vibrant community in Mill Hill. Lets all appreciate it and enjoy living in our own special part of North West London.

PENTAVIA | LATEST NEWS HOT OFF THE PRESS

The Latest on planned redevelopment of PENTAVIA Retail Park. Well just to prove they do not pay any attention to local people, let alone local planning regulations, the Communications Company representing Meadow Residential LLP an affiliate of Meadow Partners has invited us to review their latest ideas for Pentavia Park. “These changes, due to be submitted shortly, will include the delivery of more affordable housing on the site, as well as a greater mix of housing tenures. The development will now include both buildto-rent and traditional housing for sale and rent. The revised proposals now include 41% affordable housing, comprising London Living Rent, Discount Market Rent, London Affordable Rent, and London Shared Ownership. This will necessitate an increase in the overall number of homes from 717 to 844.” These changes serve only to compound and do not in any way mitigate the many and various objections Local residents and Community Groups have registered when requesting the Mayor of London, who will now (24th May) determine the application, to refuse permission. They are holding public exhibitions where these revised plans will be on show; details of which are below: Date: Saturday 9th March 2019 Time: 10am – 2:30pm Venue: RAF Museum, Grahame Park Way, London, NW9 5LL

Date: Tuesday 12th March 2019 Time: 4pm – 8pm Venue: Hartley Hall, 1 Flower Lane, London, NW7 2JA (Meadow Partners is an independent, privately owned international real estate investment and asset management firm that manages a series of closed-end private equity funds and separate accounts on behalf of institutional investors, with offices in New York City and London, registered in Delaware USA.) ARTS | NEWS | FEATURES | COMMUNITY NEWS | FORUM NEWS HOUSEBUILDER PUTS DOWN ROOTS AT LOCAL PRIMARY SCHOOL A Pin Oak tree has been gifted to St. Vincent’s Roman Catholic Primary School in Mill Hill by Barratt London, as a part of the extensive ecology work happening at its Ridgeway Views site, which is just a few minutes’ walk from the school on The Ridgeway. At the end of January, children from Year 5 and members of the School Council gathered to watch a presentation from Barratt London, before helping to plant the tree by adding soil with a shovel. Barratt London also donated two bird cafés to the school, as part of the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch, which the housebuilder supports each year. The school will now be able to encourage more birds into its garden and it is hoped the new Pin Oak tree will also offer more birds a home at the school in future. Given Ridgeway Views’ location within a conservation area, Barratt London has focused on enhancing the site’s ecological profile, by significantly increasing the amount of publicly accessible open space and increasing the number of trees on site to over 4,000. The development will also see wildlife habitats protected, new areas of grassland and two new lakes created on site to support habitat creation. Pam Reardon, Sales and Marketing Director for Barratt East London, comments: “We are really pleased to have been able to build such a fantastic relationship with St. Vincent’s, particularly as they are so close to Ridgeway Views. The development has been specifically designed to encourage wildlife and nature to settle at the site, so we wanted to reflect this in our gifts to the school. It is really important for the children to see the steps that are being taken to protect their future environment, as well as for them to be aware of the changes happening in their local area.” Teacher Emma Scelsi said: “The children are very grateful for the tree and bird cafés. They can’t wait to spot the birds outside enjoying their food and to watch their tree growing. The visit from Barratt London has been a fantastic opportunity for the children to learn about the natural environment and how they can get involved with looking after local wildlife.” The donation forms a part of the growing ties between the school and Ridgeway Views. Artwork created by the same pupils when they were in Year 4 depicting their dream homes has also been used to decorate the hoardings of the new development on The Ridgeway.

For further information about Barratt London’s Ridgeway Views development, please visit the website at www.barrattlondon.com or call 03301278545.

ARTS | NEWS | FEATURES | COMMUNITY NEWS | FORUM NEWS BARRATT LONDON TO HELP MAKE LIFE BETTER WITH NEW CHARITY FUND FOR COMMUNITY GROUPS ACROSS THE CAPITAL CHARITIES and community groups in Mill Hill are being invited to apply for a £1,000 donation from the UK’s largest housebuilder. The Barratt London Community Fund, part of the new nationwide Barratt Homes and David Wilson Community Fund, has been set up to offer donations to both registered charities and community groups that are trying to make life better for local residents. Barratt London will be giving £1,000 every month to a local organisation that is improving the quality of life for those living in the vicinity of one of its developments or offices, across the capital. “We are looking for charities and community groups that are really making a difference at a local level,” explains Karly Williams, Regional Sales Director at Barratt London. “It could be a conservation group that wants to improve the local public spaces and create habitats for wildlife, a plan for a new piece of play equipment in a community playground, or a lunch club for the elderly wanting to expand – every application will be very carefully considered by senior members of our team.” Local groups and charities are encouraged to apply for the donation via Barratt London’s charity email address charity@barrattlondon.com. Applicants should make clear where their charity is based and what the £1,000 will be used for. One of Barratt London’s charity representatives will then be in touch if the application is successful. Barratt London is donating £1,000 every month so if applications aren’t successful first time round, charities are encouraged to reapply at a later date. Karly Williams explained why Barratt Group was launching the Community Fund: “As the country’s largest housebuilder we are committed to creating a positive legacy. We want to lead the industry not just in the quality of the homes and developments we build but also in our work with charities and good causes throughout the UK. Last year £1.2 million was donated across the company but this year the goal is to raise that figure considerably, through such work as the new Barratt London Community Fund.”

5

The new fund, which will donate an additional £1 million to local good causes over three years, is in addition to the considerable amount of charitable work already being undertaken by the company. Karly Williams added: “Barratt Group recently announced our largest ever donation of £750,000 to Royal British Legion Industries to help them build a new residential village for veterans and their families. There are also existing corporate partnerships with a wide variety of organisations and charities including the RSPB, Whizz-Kidz, St John Ambulance and Mates in Mind.” In addition to the Barratt London Community Fund, the company is also launching an Individual Charity Matching scheme for staff, to give employee fundraising and charity support a further boost. Staff who raise £1,000 for their favourite charity can have that figure matched, up to a total of £1 million across the Group each year. Barratt London is currently building Ridgeway Views on The Ridgeway, Mill Hill, NW7 1AA. When completed, it will include 448 apartments with basement car parking levels, plus 12 spacious detached houses. The development will also offer excellent facilities including a residents’ gym, concierge service, play areas, fitness trail, communal viewing platform and landscaped green space with more than 4,000 trees.

MARCH MONTHLY REVIEW with Andy Smith from Mill Hill Wines

Spring is nearly here and with it hopefully some warmer weather so this month we have selected a couple of lighter, fresher style wines for you to try…

El Circo Cariñena

£8.99

This wine is intense red in colour with violet hues. The nose is light with delicate aromas of raspberries, bramble, cherry jam and cracked red pepper. On the palate, it has flavours of crushed cranberries and black olives. It has a crisp and refreshing acidity with a long and lingering finish.

Gavi DOCG del Comune di Gavi

£17.95

The hand-picked grapes thrive on the family owned hillsides, well exposed to the sun and coastal breezes. Harvest is immediately followed by soft pressing and “in bianco” vinification at controlled temperatures in stainless steel vats. This wine has an alluring straw-yellow colour, fruity scents (apricot) with hints of citrus and meadow flowers; a fresh, harmonious taste with a pleasantly fruity background.

Winter 2018

Good News about Appointments! Well done & ‘thanks’ to those who contacted us to cancel an appointment that they no longer needed, or could not make. In the period October to December 2018 97.5% of patients attended for their appointments. You can tell us -

   

Appointments at the Surgery We know that appointments are hard to come by; there are just so many available and too few to satisfy all demand. However, there are ways to make matters better:

 Patients should think carefully about how urgently they need to see a doctor: there are alternatives for many minor ailments such as speaking to a pharmacist, and following self-help guidance from the NHS (see Our New Website overleaf for more information);

 We

are looking carefully at our appointment management system to see if we can find ways to free-up more appointments;

 We have many telephone appointment slots so you can speak to a doctor and if essential, come to the Surgery for further examination and treatment;

 We are working to put in place a Social Prescribing service, operated by our Volunteer Supporters, to guide suitable patients to additional, non-clinical help and advice that is widely available from many national, charitable bodies in the UK; this we hope will free-up more appointments for purely medical treatment. While Millway Medical Practice is a very large and busy practice, we are able to offer better-than-average appointment access: while in 2018 we were required to provide 72 appointments per 1000 patients, in fact we were able to provide 76.5.

Online by using patient access. By replying CANCEL to your SMS appointment reminder. Or by calling the surgery 020 8959 0888

on

Arriving Late For Appointments It is important that you arrive in time for your appointment, as one person’s lateness adversely impacts on all of the patients who have arrived on time for their appointments. For that reason our practice policy is to limit the lateness to 15 minutes maximum and those who arrive later than that are asked to rebook. Please respect this decision if you are asked to rebook. Our GP’s do their best to run to time, but for reasons outside of their control e.g. a patient’s medical condition requires more than the allocated time or they are dealing with an unexpected emergency (remember it may be you requiring the extra time one day) they do overrun. Despite this we do require that you to arrive in time for your allocated appointment slot.

Our Social Prescribing Service We are beginning to roll out our new Social Prescribing service. This aims to provide non-clinical help and guidance in these areas:

 Contact & Inclusion (for someone who feels socially isolated)  Diabetes  Children with special needs  Prostate cancer

Travel Clinic Appointments If you have booked a travel clinic appointment it is important that you arrive on time. You will need to complete some paperwork and the nurses have a lot of information to give during a travel appointment. Arriving late may result in you not being able to receive all of the vaccines and information that you require during that appointment, and you may be asked to book a further appointment. Please respect the nurse’s decision, it is for your safety and in your best interests for this appointment not to be rushed.

 Dementia carers (Drop in sessions are on the 2nd Wednes-

day of every month the next sessions are: 13th February and 13th March from 1:30pm-4pm)

The service is prescribed by a GP and, with the patient's permission, is run by our Volunteer Supporters who will tell patients about the many local and national organisations that can provide advice and help.

Flu Vaccinations Did you miss out in the recent flu vaccination sessions? It’s not too late—phone to book an appointment - it could stop you getting the nasty flu bug that is circulating.

Mill Hill Business Network ARTS | NEWS | FEATURES | COMMUNITY | FORUM Join The Network as an Associate for FREE or for a small fee getNEWS our REWARDS programme NEWS High Streets nationally are having a hard time. High Streets operators can complain about the impact, of the recession, of on-line shopping, higher rents & rates, lack of parking etc. On the plus side consumer behaviour is changing and people are shopping in local stores for food more frequently, perhaps to save on wastage or to “top-up” a shop done on-line or at an out of town retail store. Home delivery, which has become more popular recently will increase as people value their leisure time more and reduce their dependency on private cars in favour of walking, cycling or using public transport as we are told we have to do! Consumers are becoming more discerning too and, in many cases, where a purchase is not for a recognisable, generally available, product code, they want to see and touch before they buy. The move to organic products and to vegetarian or vegan tastes, again fuels this move back towards local stores. People expect friendly added value service not just lowest price. A shop that can genuinely and professionally advise and guide consumer selection (without being overtly pushy) will do well and will develop loyal customers who return to buy more. If you genuinely “add-value” with a smile, then the customer experience will be popular. If not, there are plenty of other places to shop. And the same is true for restaurants; even more so when social media can be used to review the experience and people are more likely to be negative than give a positive comment. The trend then, back to shopping locally, and an increase in people’s desire to eat out, are both good for High Streets that have a balanced quality offering. Spending on food and drink typically accounts for more than 50% of total leisure spending, compared to around 15% on ‘cultural services’ (e.g. going to the cinema, theatre, art galleries or live music) and under 10% on hotels, ‘games of chance’ and recreation/sporting services. There is scope for town centres to capitalise on this trend, redefining their function as leisure ‘destinations’ in their own right. The development of a strong commercial leisure offer can help to increase footfall, particularly outside of retail hours, and visitors undertaking ‘linked trips’ between retail, leisure and other uses also spend increased dwell-time in centres. Markets are a key generator of footfall as well as a known attractor to centres. We are trying with the support of our Councillors to create the “Mill Hill Businesses Network”, to encourage co-ordinated development of Mill Hill‘s commercial activities, towards a more sustainable future for all, and to ensure that are able to buy locally. This is a new MHNF initiative and we trust it will receive widespread support as we move towards 2020 when the Broadway will be 100 years young. The production is great fun for all ages and sees huge sets and scenes full of dancing Spanish town dwellers - gypsies etc. There is a comedy edge to the procesdings as the old Don Quixote feels that a spirit has told him to go on a quest. This seems to be to marry the younger town dwellers and he is rebuffed by them all. The two main roles were played on opening night by Vadim Muntagirov and Marienela Nunez and at the moment these are two of the best dancers in the World. They are officially the best dancers in the UK having won the Male and Female Awards at the National Dance Awards in February. The audience gave standing ovations to both. The music is a wonderful score by Minkus played with great vigour by the orchestra under the direction of top conductor Martin Yates. This ballet is a fabulous night out and audiences absolutely love it, It is silly and the plot is really thin but the great crowd scenes plus the music - dancing and colour lift it out of the ordinary. Far better to attend this ballet than sit in front of the TV or Computer at home. I loved it so much I am going 4 times to see different casts during its run. Some tickets still remain if you are quick.

ARTS | NEWS | FEATURES | COMMUNITY NEWS | FORUM NEWS MHMTC doing the Lambeth Walk, Oi! The curtain goes up on MHMTC’s Patrons’ Party production of ME AND MY GIRL at the end of March, and life is getting really busy for our members as they not only try to learn their lines, lyrics and dance steps, but also get stuck in with the scenery! Although the show is semi-staged, meaning it doesn’t get the bells and whistles of our main October show, we still have to find creative ways of dressing up the stage to represent a posh English country house circa 1937. We’re grateful for the help of Rob Barker, who also doubles up on lighting. He builds sets every year for a professional group in the US, so we really wouldn’t be able to find anyone with better experience to whip up a lamp for Bill Snibson to lean on in the number Leaning On A Lamppost, along with framing for the ‘ancestors’ in the regal Song Of Hareford and a coat of arms. Painter/decorator Beth Lines is also on painting duty, and is coming all the way from South London to help us, and will, along with some of our members, help to paint the scenery. As many of us have jobs and busy family lives, we are so grateful for Rob and Beth’s invaluable assistance. Moving on to the show itself, we can’t sing the praises of our director Barbara Shapiro enough. Me And My Girl is her directorial debut, and she is proving to be a big success in the role, especially with her immense patience. She has put so much work into not just setting the scenes, but also choreographing the dance routines and being very supportive to the cast. It makes such a difference to have someone so firm but good-natured. She is being ably supported by MD Derek Holland. Me And My Girl, by Noel Gay, is a wonderful Thirties British musical featuring classic songs The Lambeth Walk, The Sun Has Got His Hat On and the title tune. First staged in 1937, it tells the story of Bill Snibson, a Lambeth costermonger, who is revealed to the new Earl of Hareford – which horrifies both his newly-discovered aristo relations and sweetheart Sally. But will he keep his title and get to keep his cockney girl? Rehearsals are going well, and the show is shaping up to be an entertaining production. Please don’t miss it. To remind anyone who’d like to see the show, it’s only open to MHMTC patrons. If you would like to become a patron* (cost £15 adults and £9 under 16s), please email patrons@mhmtc.co.uk or call James Bingham, Acting Patrons’ Secretary, on 01923 269923. QUIZ NIGHT

NEWS FROM MHMTC

RICARDO New Musical Director

By Farhat Dar Mill Hill Musical Theatre Company

ARTS | NEWS | FEATURES | COMMUNITY NEWS | FORUM NEWS

Oh what a beautiful dawning for MHMTC’s Oklahoma!

Although we’re full pelt with Me And My Girl at the moment, MHMTC’s committee is also working on our October show, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s smash, Oklahoma! And we’re pleased to unveil our new poster, designed for us by Simon Morris, exclusively in this issue of Mill Hill Today. Rehearsals begin on Monday 8 April at 8pm at Hartley Hall - a week after our AGM – when we shall start note-bashing the songs with our newly appointed MD Ricardo Fernandes. Ricardo is a student at the Royal College of Music, but already has some great musical-theatre experience, having helmed fully staged university productions of Hairspray and Bring It On, as well as three professional cabarets at The Pheasantry in Chelsea and one at the Phoenix Arts Club. We are delighted to have Ricardo on board on this production, alongside our brilliant artistic director Robin Scarborough, who has previously directed MHMTC’s productions of Oliver! and Sister Act. For those of you who don’t know, Oklahoma! is one of the all-time great musicals, and the first Broadway production ran for a world-record five years! Based on Lynn Riggs’ play Green Grow The Lilacs and set in 1906, it tells the story of farm girl Laurey and her romances with cowboy Curly and surly farmhand Jud Fry, against the backdrop of their Indian territory hoping to become a new state of the US Union. The story is great, and every song in the show is a joy, and we’d love to hear from anyone who’d like to join us on stage – especially MEN!! We need cowboys and farmers, so if you’ve fancied yourself on stage in a Stetson and chaps, please get in touch…! Email join@mhmtc.co.uk for more information.

Show dates are Wednesday 23 to Saturday 26 October, 7.30pm, (plus a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm), at Hartley Hall in Flower Lane. Audition dates will be announced nearer the time.

Grant grants us a Quiz Night audience We were happy and grateful to hold another packed Quiz Night on Saturday 9 February, but especially delighted to have MD Grant Graves helming the event again. Grant has fought his way back to health from being really quite poorly, and it was wonderful to see him in his rightful role of Quiz Master. The questions seem to go down well with the 95 quizzers, along with the fish and chips, and we raised a really great amount for the coffers to help fund out shows. We’d like to thank Trinity Church on The Broadway for their excellent facilities, and especially in putting out the table and chairs before we arrived.

We’ll be doing it all again in September, so look out in a future edition of Mill Hill Today for the next date. Thanks for your continued support!

Club News It’s rare to report that no changes are good news! Mill Hill RFC’s league positions still stand healthy with the 1st XV remaining in second place behind undefeated London Scottish and the 2nd XV sit in third in their respective league. The 1st XV have achieved an incredible feat, one we have not found done by another team this season as of yet, winning 3 games on the bounce with over 40 points and not conceding a single point! We commend the side for their hard work and training. The 2nd XV have managed to find themselves some wins too however the side still needs numbers to bolster the ranks. The 6 Nations has bought a fantastic atmosphere to the club, having old members and ex-residents return to Mill Hill for the spectacle, some travelling many miles. With another two games to go we hope to see some new faces from the community to join us in enjoying the matches on the big screen. February being the shortest month mean little news – March brings the final two weekends of the 6 nations, Saracens home matches against Saints and Harlequins as well as Mill Hill games so our doors will be open often so we urge locals to pop in! 1st XV results: 9th Feb – Mill Hill 46 – 0 Watford (Win, League) 16th Feb - Mill Hill 46 – 0 Pinner & Grammarians (Win, League)
