MILL HILL GETS TIDY MILL HILL LITTER PICKERS are an independent group of Mill Hill residents who wish to clean up our local parks and area. Formed by Zoe Samuelson and Caroline Oliver in early January the group has already had two very successful litter picks in January and February. In March it is KEEP BRITAIN TIDY “HEROES ASSEMBLE” weekend and to celebrate the MILL HILL LITTER PICKERS will be out in force on Saturday 3 March meeting as usual in Daws Lane Car Park next to the Park. Do come along and there are litter pickers and rubbish bags available for you to use. The more that can come the more that can be done. This is a fantastic initiative which is soon to get its own Facebook page and already has its own badges etc. Ideal for all the family. MILL HILL GIRLS GOING TO THE PALACE SAY THANK YOU TO NW7! Peter Jones CBE has announced that Pump It, a team of 11 students from Copthall School in Mill Hill, have been invited to attend Buckingham Palace for a special awards ceremony on 1st March having come in the top two sixth form teams in his nationwide enterprise competition, Tycoon. The Pump It team visited the fantastic businesses on Mill Hill Broadway and Saracens in Allianz Park on match day to sell their water bottles, and they want to thank everyone for the enthusiasm shown supporting their aspirational and impressive business. The young tycoons received £1,000 as a start-up loan from the Peter Jones Foundation for Enterprise to design and sell bottled water to raise money to build a water pump in a school in a developing country. Pump It traded from October to December 2017 and generated a fantastic profit ratio of 260%, enabling two pumps to be build. Everyone at MH Today congratulates the girls on such an altruistic outcome alongside the impressive business skills clearly developed. We wish you all the very best of luck! SARACENS RECEIVE FREEDOM OF BOROUGH On Tuesday 2oth February 2018, the Mayor of Barnet presented Saracens Rugby Club with The Freedom of the Borough at a ceremony held at the Town Hall. The Freedom of the Borough is the highest award the London Borough of Barnet Council can give. The award was presented to the chairman of Saracens Rugby Club, Mr Nigel Wray and the reigning champions of the European Cup, in recognition of the club’s sporting success, and for the way in which the club has been able to bring Copthall Stadium (Allianz Park) back into full use by the club and the community. Nigel Wray, Chairman of Saracens said: “For Saracens to receive the highest honour that Barnet can give, the Freedom of the Borough, not just because of our success on the field – two Premiership Championships, two European Champions Cup wins back to back all whilst in Barnet – but also for the work that the Foundation does in the community, is quite genuinely an honour which is very humbling for us. And we won't let people down. There's much more to be done".

WAYNE CASEY RIP - An Appreciation

by Richard Logue

Not long after I moved to Mill Hill 23 years ago, I had reason to contact our local councillors regarding vandalism in our local park. Cllr Wayne Casey came back to me by email within a couple of hours and followed the matter up with a phone call. At once I was struck by not only how quickly Cllr Casey came back to me, but also by his professionalism and friendliness. Over the subsequent years I would read in the local papers about what he and Jeremy Davies were doing and how they always stood up for the interests of local residents in the face of anyone who wanted to damage the quality of life in Mill Hill for their own gains only. I was massively disappointed when the Liberal Democrats lost their council seats in 2010. We lost two exceptional and hard-working councillors when Wayne stepped down and Jeremy lost his seat. Now I feel it is my turn to step up to the plate and fight for the interests of all Mill Hill residents, as I intend to stand as a Liberal Democrat council candidate for Mill Hill in May along with Roger Tichborne and Donna Pickup. We will have one vital piece of guidance if we do get elected, and that is the exemplary way both Wayne and Jeremy conducted themselves when they were Mill Hill’s councillors. It says a lot about Wayne’s character that warm tributes were paid this week from not only local Liberal Democrats but also from Matthew Offord MP and Cllr Alison Moore the former leader of the Barnet Council Labour group. May you rest in peace Wayne

Unfiltered News : TRIALS & TRIBULATIONS

When the glasswasher slits my jeans in the first hour of my shift, I know that today is going to be long. This is only the second glimpse of the public eye my jeans have enjoyed. If before, my jeans were an irrelevant matter strolling through the public’s periphery, the right-angled ‘L’ shaped hole gaping over my shin have now made them a focal point. The rip isn’t fashionably frayed; it looks like a mathematician’s attempt at authenticity. My colleague, Positive Miranda, helps me consider ways to hide the hole. I could fold the fabric over itself, but the hole is so large it creates the illusion that the maker ran out of material. I could staple the fabric together, but the stapler is conveniently out-of-order. Opting for invisibility instead, I suggest switching roles with the porter, washing dishes in the back room. However, I’ll need to collect the plates from the front, so there’s no real opportunity to hide all day. I reluctantly fold the trousers and walk to the front of the café where an elderly man is rambling on to Efficient Ellie, our waitress with an eye for detail. I venture over and ask her, while seemingly including the man, if everything is okay. ‘I don’t know. Maybe you can help,’ she says as she strategically edges away, smirking, leaving me at the till with the man who has not yet stopped for breath. His eyes slide seamlessly from her to me as he continues his monologue. I’m trapped. When he momentarily pauses, I ask him what he wants. He gestures to a blueberry muffin, ‘A crumpet’. ‘A muffin?’ I retort, not wanting him to get an unwelcome surprise when he put this, not so crumpet, in his mouth. ‘Sweetie, in England we call these crumpets,’. He is wrong, but as I look down at my jeans I decide this is a battle not worth fighting. I have larger problems at hand. ‘Right, well that’ll be £2.70 please’. As he searches for his money, he continues talking. As customers start to queue, his desire to share is becoming a problem. To intensify my feeling of discomfort he reveals that I’m the the only person he’ll talk to all day and that this’ll be his first bite of the day. Finally, once he pays, I pick up the tray I came to collect and let Miranda take over. I walk speedily to the back, avoiding eye contact with those surprised by my interesting fashion choices. En route, I see the man interrupting a studying student. As I pass, I hear him say him I hear the familiar words, ‘You’re the only person I’ll talk to all day….’. Niamh

Introducing Mill Hill Village Sports Club

Considering that Mill Hill Village Sports Club have been around for 150 years, it is a little surprising perhaps, that this fantastic little Club is not better known among the Mill Hill community. In part this is due to its secluded location at the end of a country lane, in a really quiet, peaceful and beautiful part of Mill Hill, bordering rural farms and the Totteridge Valley. The location is just beyond Finchley Nurseries Garden Centre at the bottom end of Burtonhole Lane, the top end of which opens up onto the Ridgeway opposite the Adam and Eve Public House and adjacent to the National Institute of Medical Research site. The Club have variously provided facilities for a number of Sports over the year, including Athletics, Hockey and Table Tennis. These days however and for the past 75+ years, the focus has been predominantly on Cricket and Football, whose season’s dovetail nicely, to offer all year round sporting provision for Members and supporters of the Club. Cricket has been the ever present Sport throughout the Club’s history. The first report of a game in the locality in the Hendon Times was in 1876, when the working men of Mill Hill playing the Hendon Institute of Working Men. In those early years Mill Hill Village were always on the move. The first home ground was a field opposite the Adam and Eve Public House. By 1887, the Jubilee Year, the fixture between the President’s XI and the Club was played at Arran Dene the private ground of the then president, Mr J A Johnson. Further moves followed to the “Donkey Field” near Wills Grove, then Hammers Lane, where St Paul’s Vicarage now stands: on to the foot of Holcombe Hill – at the rear of Bentley’s House, opposite The Forge. During 1908 and 1910 a rift in the club caused a parting of the ways and the formation of two Mill Hill cricket clubs. Mill Hill Village CC remained at Holcombe Hill until 1914, whilst Mill Hill CC made their headquarters at Bunns Lane where they remained, until falling out of existence in the early part of this century. Officially renamed Mill Hill Village Cricket Club in 1922, a new ground was found for the club at picturesque Nan Clarke Lane. Here began an era of fine cricket from a great side until the ground was commandeered for military purposes in 1940. During the war years, the Village became a wandering side again before a final move to what has become our permanent home, Burtonhole Lane. There was also another change of name, to Mill Hill Village Cricket and Athletic Club to incorporate the winter activities, football and hockey. In 1968, under the new banner Mill Hill Village Sports Club, came the Centenary celebrations. The 60s, 70s and 80s were very successful years for the Club who punched well above their weight in the local amateur league set ups in both Cricket and Football. Look out for more details about our big Family Fun Day Fete event on Sunday 6th May. It would be wonderful to really engage the Mill Hill community and get a lot of new faces along to our friendly club to enjoy a fabulous day out and see what the Club has to offer. There will be incredible inflatables, thrilling activities, football and cricket based games and competitions, traditional stalls, raffle / silent auction and a diverse range of food and beverages on offer. If you wish to receive more information about this event, or about our 150th Year, or if feel you would like to get involved in helping us, please reach out via our events specific email address : - mhvsc150thanniversary@gmail.com We look forward to welcoming you to Mill Hill Village Sports Club. Your fantastic community Club and an institution rich in history at the heart of Mill Hill.

These days the Club offers opportunities for Children and Adults alike to play our National Winter and Summer Sports. The Junior sections of the Club recruit young Cricketers and youth footballers from Ages 6 and upwards and the multiple Adult teams across both sports, offer a broad range of abilities to enable all participants to get a game. Our Club has made a tremendous contribution to amateur sport in the Borough of Barnet over many long years. Mill Hill Village Sports Club strives to be a fully inclusive club, with broad representation in terms of age, gender, ethnicity and social status. We welcome and are open to everyone seeking to participate in our Youth Cricket, Youth Football, Adult Cricket or Adult Football set ups. We also host Children’s Holiday Camps and a diverse range of Community events. MHVSC have an excellent history of youth development in both cricket and football and many of our players have gone on to play at high levels, with many others moving into our Senior sides to represent the Club with distinction in our various league and cup competitions. We have recently been reaccredited as a Clubmark standard Club. Clubmark is a Sports England licensed accreditation scheme which shows that a club is sustainable, well run and provides the right environment for its members. Clubmark accreditation also means that the club is recognised as a safe, rewarding and fulfilling place for participants of all ages.

150th Anniversary

Mill Hill Village Sports Club are exceptionally proud to be celebrating our 150th Anniversary this year. This is quite a remarkable achievement for a local amateur Sports Club, I am sure you will agree. As a celebration of our 150 years, we are planning a number of key events to raise money, increase awareness of our Club and engage as wide a cross section of the Community as possible. These will include a Family Fun-Day Fete, to be held on Sunday 6th May and a Grand Summer Ball taking place on Saturday 30th June, both to be held at Mill Hill Village Sports Club itself, plus Cricket matches at Lords involving both the Junior and Senior sections of the Club and several other events throughout the year. Our 150th Year Celebrations and fundraising are also taking place in support of our nominated Charity partner, Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice, who provide support for children and young people with life‐limiting or life-threatening conditions and their families, in North and Central London and Hertsmere. Mill Hill Village Sports Club are delighted to be able to support our Charity partner as they Build the Ark, North and Central London’s only children’s hospice building, to provide more care for more children and their families. The more money we can raise as a Club, in this important year for both us and Noah’s Ark, the more we will be able to contribute to this hugely worthwhile Charity and cause. We are creating a 150th Anniversary Full Colour Souvenir Brochure to celebrate the past, present and future of our wonderful Club. The brochure will enable us to promote the Club, to provide more detail on the 150th celebrations that we have planned and importantly it will provide an excellent vehicle for sponsorship and advertising your business. We are targeting a minimum of 3000 print run, for distribution around Mill Hill and neighbouring North London suburbs and also an extensive online distribution in Adobe interactive format. It will be sent out to members, past and present, to all friends of the Club and to local businesses, cafes, community centres, business hubs and other establishments across the Borough of Barnet and beyond. If you would like be willing to discuss sponsorship in the brochure or any bespoke sponsorship opportunities in support of the Club, please get in touch.

Please get in touch with the Club if you would like to support us in any way, whether that be as a Player, Coach, Official, Supporter or in any other capacity. MILL HILL RUGBY CLUB Celebrating 80 Years

It may have been a quieter month for Mill Hill RFC but it’s been an interesting one nonetheless! Unfortunately, both men’s sides have had a lack of fixtures as there have been teams in both leagues dropping out or unable to play. This hasn’t affected out standing in the leagues however and both sides are enjoying time at the top and hope to keep it that way! Along with our strong league positions both sides are also through to the semi-finals their respective cup competitions. To keep the lads in shape we’ve played some friendlies with our teams mixing against good friends Haringey Rhinos, Fullarians RFC, and played our first fixture against Kings-Cross Steelers – a leading club for inclusive rugby. As always Saracens match days have seen fans from near and far passing through our doors and have created a great atmosphere throughout Mill Hill, along with the 6 Nations it’s been buzzing! So, what’s new? Well, in partnership with the Saracens Sport Foundation & Barnet Mencap, Mill Hill RFC run ‘Project Rugby’ – inclusive disability rugby sessions, and on Sunday the 25th February the guys and girls had their first competitive tournament! An early coach set off to premiership side London Irish’s stadium where try’s were scored and fun was had. This is hopefully the first of many and we are committed to continue, without end, running Project Rugby. The BIG announcement: Mill Hill Rugby Club are launching Women’s rugby!!! We are committed to resurrect a Ladies XV here which once upon a time was thriving and won many trophies! This is open to all Women 17+ and of any rugby experience, from none at all to a veteran of the game! Once we have a core group on 6-10 ladies training will start for Thursday nights. We hope to see a full women’s side here soon! If interested simply get in touch over any of the club platforms. Dates for the diary – Unlike other years we are opening our doors to the local community and friends of the club for the end of season bash! We’d love for our friends and neighbours to see what the club is all about. On Saturday May 12th, 7.30 till v late Mill Hill RFC have our End of season and 80th anniversary Dinner.
