Welcome to the June edition. This month is always the second busiest in the year for events after Christmas and we have much to look forward to in the area. However, this is the last issue for the time being. We are especially looking forward to the 4th Summer Festival in the Town Square and the market on the main street on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 September. The London Belles return to play a free concert on the Saturday afternoon and then on Sunday we welcome for the first time ever a special Family Fun Day run by professional play experts to deliver Family Zumba and much more. Best of all it is free and on your doorstep. The stalls are coming for one last time this summer as well - so come along to enjoy your favourites. We wish to congratulate Saracens on their recent triumphs. They show what is possible with the right attitude. Being positive and always giving of our best is the Saracens way which you can read more about on their website. Highly recommended. NW7 HUB INTERVIEW

Fundraising to Start in the Autumn

We spoke this week to the Trustees of the NW7 HUB about Fundraising, previous work and much more. This issue sees us look at the plans for the NW7 Hub and what exciting things local residents can expect in the next 3 years. 1. The Hub said it needed to raise 2 million to build the new site. How much has been raised so far? Fund raising is on track for the project overall and will be officially launched in the autumn. We have many interested parties from social enterprise through to local donors and major national funding bodies. 2. Is it on schedule for a 2020 start still? Subject to the planning process yes we expect to start work in 2020 with a 2022 completion date. We are in open dialogue with the Council around this though as would be expected in a professional project. 3. In the current building are you still providing Business Networking services? Yes where required although the demand for these was substantially less than originally planned and we have therefore partnered with other organisations and charities to further the development of the Hub. 4. Is the basing of the Mill Hill Litter Pickers in the Building - which is a Liberal Democrat project - a good way to encourage a Conservative/Labour Council to support the project? ( or is it great foresight for the future after the EU result !!) None of the Trustees nor my contacts with the Litter pickers consider it affiliated with any political party in any way. Equally it is a very useful and strong local community project that as an organisation if we are able to facilitate it that is fine. There are no concerns from the Council around this. 5. Why is the website so out of date when fundraising and information is essential to inform the area. It is one area that took us longer to update and is a work in progress. We expect to continue to update this. There are a large number of events planned over the rest of the year. We continue to receive sponsorship from local organisations, we are working with some really interesting Charities to broader our cultural and reach. 2019 into 2020 are very exciting times for the Hub. ARTS | NEWS | FEATURES | COMMUNITY NEWS | FORUM NEWS PENTAVIA | UPDATE | New Hearing Date The redevelopment at Pentavia Retail Park, in suburban and semi-rural Mill Hill, NW7 is again under review. The Developers state that: “There are no changes to the total number of units, unit or tenure mix, parking levels or building heights, but changes are being proposed to internal layout, balconies and boundaries serving private amenity spaces.” Consequently, the public hearing with the Mayor of London has been postponed to 26th July at the GLA’s Offices. TOWN SQUARE MARKET LICENSE GRANTED TO NEIGHBOURHOOD FORUM At a hearing on 29 May the Council considered submissions from the Forum and the local Brockenhurst Action Group who were against the licence on the grounds ofrubbish and noise led by Roger Tichborne. The council decided that the licence should be granted to the Neighbourhood Forum and made some limits on times and would put noise limiters on equipment if possible. This means that the Town Square can continue to be used for events in the coming years which is fantastic news for the whole community,

ACTION REQUIRED: FIBRE BROADBAND Many neighbours are dissatisfied with the speed and reliability of the broadband in our street. FLOWER LANE Openreach consider that we have an adequate service, so they don’t intend replacing the cable. However, if there is enough demand, they will replace old-style copper wiring with faster fibre broadband, for a one-off charge of £40,022 (VAT is not applicable). This charge would be shared equally by all households signing up to the scheme - the more households to sign up, the lower the cost per house. A government scheme which provides a £500 per household subsidy and a £2,500 subsidy to businesses would cover the entire cost, but 10-15 businesses run from Flower Lane must join the scheme – do you have a company/business run from your home address? Openreach will contract with each household and business separately. After contracts are signed, it is not possible to add new participants to the scheme. If you don’t choose to join at the outset, you cannot join later. Openreach have up to 12 months to lay the cable, but often do it sooner than that. After the cable has been laid, you will be free to contract with any provider offering the service - Sky, BT Infinity, Virgin etc. Fast and reliable internet is becoming a necessity in the home, especially as your house moves closer to being a ‘smart home’. Fibre broadband may even increase the value of your property. We urge you to join the scheme. The more who join, the lower the cost for everyone, and if enough businesses operate from houses in the street, we may get the broadband free of charge. You may have seen my WhatsApp message stating that we hope to limit the cost to £494 per house (or free if enough businesses sign up). If an inadequate number of neighbours intend to join so that the cost per house increases significantly, we will have to abandon the plan. If you would like to join, or have any further questions, please email me by Sunday 9th June steven.mendel@me.com . I will need your name, full address, home phone number and email address. ARTS | NEWS | FEATURES | COMMUNITY NEWS | FORUM NEWS ABOUT JAMI | opening in Cooksleys Site from Summer 2019 Jami, the mental health service for the Jewish Community, to open a pop up shop in Mill Hill, London. The Head Room pop up shop will sell upcycled and donated vintage and designer goods and will be open from summer 2019 for a few hours each week, thanks to the generosity of the freeholder of 12 The Broadway offering Jami the space on a temporary basis. For someone recovering from mental ill health, developing a daily structure, re-engaging socially and preparing to return to work can be vital. Through Jami’s vocational hub in Borehamwood we are able to support these needs, at the same time as creating opportunities for people to gain insight into what Upcycling is and the techniques needed to produce a quality item. At the same time as transforming unwanted items that would otherwise become landfill and developing practical new skills, it enables people recovering from mental illness to gain new confidence through personal achievement, essential for their continued wellbeing. Items available to buy include restored or redesigned furniture, handmade greetings cards, cushions, artworks and more. Alongside these products will be a selection of pre-loved designer, vintage and retro fashion, homewares and collectables. Jami has been providing practical and emotional support for the mental health of the Jewish community for thirty years and we know it is possible for someone to regain a meaningful life despite severe mental ill health. The Head Room Upcycling project follows the establishment of four community hubs (Edgware, Finchley, Redbridge and Stamford Hill), our social enterprise warehouse (Borehamwood) and Head Room Café (our community café in Golders Green). We look forward to welcoming the public to browse, shop and discover how to get involved in our social enterprise Upcycling projects. For more information please visit www.jamiuk.org

Consultations: Increasing the Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) Consultation (25 April – 31 July) Provide your views on proposals to increase the parking Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) tariffs in Barnet. PCNs are used as a deterrent to reduce inconsiderate parking, encouraging road users to drive responsibly and improve accessibility for all road users. They also help reduce traffic congestion on our roads which harms our environment through engine idling, noise and makes our borough a less pleasant place to be. Please provide your views here.

ARTS | NEWS | FEATURES | COMMUNITY NEWS | FORUM NEWS ABOUT THE NEIGHBOURHOOD FORUM

Mill Hill Neighbourhood Forum, was formally designated by Barnet Council in September 2014 to write a Neighbourhood Development Plan (NDP) for Mill Hill ward and the NW7 postcodes in Hale ward. We have formally applied to renew such designation from September 2019 for a further 5 years. This will ensure the plan (currently in its 4th draft) is completed and for us to oversea many of the recommendations it contains as delivery projects. The re- designation applications can be viewed at the link below. https://engage.barnet.gov.uk/Mill-Hill-Neighbourhood-Area-Renewal Significant activities to date are detailed below: After an initial round of meetings and leaflet distribution around the designated area, to explain the purpose of the Neighbourhood Forum, we have held regular Committee meetings and bi-annual “public meetings”. In addition, we established markets in our Town Centre in order to best engage with local people and these are ongoing. Further we have helped to produce the 3rd printed edition of the Mill Hill Guide (an A4 glossy brochure) which has been hand delivered to more than 12,000 households in the designated area. We also help to produce MHToday a monthly “Digital” newsletter (May-19 will bring its 22nd edition) which features, in typically 40+ A4 pages, Neighbourhood Forum information, local news and events, with a circulation of around 4500 per month. It is our aim to make Mill Hill a better place to live, work and play, without Political bias. We pro-actively try to promote Mill Hill for the benefit of all and these productions help to communicate our progress to all interested parties. We commissioned the Masters Students in Urban Planning from the London School of Economics, to review NW7 and their excellent 78-page report has informed our NDP, as has the report we commissioned from AECOM on Master-planning for our Town Centre and its surrounds. We have reviewed most planning applications in the area since designation to inform our plan, and have commented on many where they were seen not to conform with the plan’s emerging thinking. The major developments, such as NIMR, Pentavia, IBSA, Saracens-West-Stand and some smaller ones such as St.Vincent’s School landfill project have taken huge amounts of time to review, assess and comment on, thus diverting energy from creating the NDP. We have undertaken some “intervention” projects which were deemed important in the short term and to enabling delivery of the plan. Notable examples are as follows: • We gained funding from the Mayor or London, Local residents, businesses and Barnet Council to regenerate the shopping precinct at Salcombe Gardens • We gained funding from Tesco & Barnet Council to create a Town Square at the end of Brockenhurst Gardens as it meets the Broadway in our Town Centre to provide a central meeting place for all. • We recognised that the Town Centre was too dirty to attract investment and accordingly worked with Council officers to get rid of the bins and to use timed bag collections as an alternative waste management solution. This new practice is being rolled-out now across Barnet. • We recognised that the Broadway Station was not fit for purpose and brought, with help from Cllr Val Duschinsky, the various Public Sector bodies involved (Network Rail, Barnet Council, Govia-Thameslink, TfL & Highways England) together for project meetings, chaired by Dr Offord MP. A budget of £65,000 was agreed for a feasibility study into how best to achieve “Step-Free-Access” at the station and subsequently an application for SFA funding under the “Access for All” scheme was submitted to the Department for Transport, and we now know it has been successful! • We have engaged with local developers who have prepared a “feasibility” study for establishing, a 150-bed Hotel, Conference Centre and Multi-Storey Car Park on the current Council owned car Park at Mill Hill Broadway Station- This would form a key part, with SFA, of the regeneration of the station and result in a huge economic boost for our Town Centre.

ARTS | NEWS | FEATURES | COMMUNITY NEWS | FORUM NEWS • Campaigned with others including Andrew Dismore to get step-free-access at Mill Hill East station, and this is now in TfL’s schedule to deliver in the next 12 months • Responded to numerous Barnet Council & GLA consultations, including Barnet Leisure, Parks & Open Spaces, Housing, Parking, Transport Policy, London 2050, the evolving London Plan and the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF). • Obtained funding from Ministry for Housing Communities and Local Government to pay for 2/3rds (£39,000) of the Architects fees in respect of the proposed Community Centre at 80 Daws Lane on the basis of the “Community Right to Build” programme, which expects to see this project progressed through a referendum by the Neighbourhood Forum in accordance with due process.

Meetings to discuss our activity have also been held with our Elected Councillors, Council Officers, Matthew Offord MP for Hendon Constituency (which includes NW7) and with Andrew Dismore, GLA Member for Barnet & Camden (notably where GLA or TfL have been involved).

We have built a website at www.millhillforum.org.uk which will set out our progress as we create the Neighbourhood Development Plan. This includes minutes (where not sensitive) of Forum meetings, scheme appraisals, consultation efforts, presentations etc. Our Facebook page is followed by over 3000 people and provides relevant information for all. www.facebook.com/millhillforum

Benefit to London Borough of Barnet Finally, we believe the MHNF Committee and members has already served as a very useful independent “Focus Group” available to Council Officers and Developers for consultation on their thinking and it will continue to do so!

We are pleased to have enjoyed the support of Local Residents, Business Leaders and other local Associations, and always encourage those who may wish to help positively and pro-actively in our efforts, to get in touch by email to millhill_nf@btinternet.com

MEET THE CAST OF OKLAHOMA! MHMTC is excited to unveil the cast for its big autumn production, Oklahoma! After a very closely contested evening of auditions on Monday 20 May, the panel were delighted to award the two lead roles – feisty ranch owner Laurey and her love interest, cocky cowboy Curly – to Ellie Taff and Stephen Lanigan-O’Keeffe. Ellie, who studied Drama at Aberystwyth University and who made her debut for MHMTC was in 2019 Patrons’ Party Me And My Girl, said, “I’m thrilled to have landed the part of Laurey. I can’t wait to get stuck into the role – she’s such a great character and has some wonderful songs.” Oklahoma! is Stephen’s first production with MHMTC – but his father John has been in several productions for the Company. Stephen, who is music co-ordinator at University College School and is composer and producer of Elokay Productions’ Musical of the Year, said, “I have longed to play Curly and to sing this wonderful score since seeing Oklahoma when I was 18. Not sure how to justify the name Curly with my bald head, though!” One of Oklahoma’s most colourful characters is Ado Annie, and the part was awarded to Georgia Dove. This is Georgia’s fifth show with MHMTC, and she was absolutely “thrilled” with landing this great comedy role. “This is really my dream come true, as I’ve always wanted to play Ado Annie. I can’t thank MHMTC enough!” Ado Annie has TWO romantic interests, clueless cowboy Will Parker – who will be played by Mark Sampson-Vincent in his MHMTC debut – and smarmy travelling salesman Ali Hakim (MHMTC stalwart Nigel Kelly). “I’m so excited to be given the part of Will, and can’t wait to get started,” said Mark. The villain of the piece is surly farmhand Jud Fry, who holds a candle for Laurey, and this role has been awarded to David Rose, who played the star role of Tevye in MHMTC’s 2018 production of Fiddler On The Roof. “Jud Fry is mean, moody and the complete opposite of Tevye – the baddie is always a brilliant character to get your teeth into.” Last but not least, Aunt Eller (played by Maureen Lipman in the London production of Oklahoma! which starred Hugh Jackman, is Suzy Jarvis – who totally smashed her first star role in a musical in March in Me And My Girl as the stately Duchess. “I’m really looking forward to playing another bossy woman,” said Suzy.

Chairman Christine Hubbard said, “We have an excellent cast on board, and also director and MD, which we’re sure is a winning combination. “But, although the principal roles are filled, we still need people on stage as part of the chorus, especially men. If any guys out there fancy playing a cowboy on stage – and a singing one at that – please get in touch by emailing join@ mhmtc.co.uk. You don’t have to have any acting experience, but you do need to be able to hold a tune. It really is great fun on stage (and during rehearsals!).”

INFORMATION Music rehearsals for Oklahoma have been underway since April, and in June director Robin Scarborough takes over with setting all the scenes. There are also dances for the principals and chorus to learn, so there’s quite a bit to do until the show, which runs from Wednesday 23 to Saturday 26 October at Hartley Hall in Flower Lane, Mill Hill. Tickets go on sale in September on www.ticketsource. co.uk. Find out more at our website, www.mhmtc.co.uk.

ARTS | NEWS | FEATURES | COMMUNITY NEWS | SPORTS NEWS EXETER CHIEFS 34 SARACENS MEN 37 Premier League Cup Final | Twickenham from Saracens.com Saracens secured the double by overturning an 11-point deficit to defeat Exeter Chiefs in a gripping Gallagher Premiership final at Twickenham. Nic White put Exeter ahead inside a minute, but Jamie George and Ben Spencer dotted down for the champions before Dave Ewers restored the Chiefs’ lead. Lock Jonny Hill stretched the score to 22-16 at the break and Henry Slade added a try, however Liam Williams, Sean Maitland and George saw Sarries retain the title and win a fourth in five years despite Sam Hill’s score at the death. The Devonshire outfit flew out the traps, reclaiming the restart and barrelling their way towards the Saracens try-line at a frantic rate. It led to Australian scrum-half White sniping his way over from a yard out and Simmonds followed up to make it a dream start for last season’s losing finalists. But similarly to the semi-final against Gloucester, Sarries’ response was sublime. The build-up was majestic as Alex Goode and Alex Lozowski found space to release Maro Itoje on a rampaging trot through the middle. Deep into Chiefs’ 22, Maitland looked set to be the beneficiary of a sweeping move to the left but for a Henry Slade hand. The England centre saw yellow for his cynical action and with a man advantage, Mark McCall’s side crossed for the first time. In came the cavalry as the line-out was superbly taken and George managed to weave his way to five points. Farrell’s conversion faded to the left but the fly-half made amends with a successful penalty moments later. Saracens power game was causing all sorts of issues for the Chiefs defence. Billy Vunipola and Will Skelton were particularly destructive and their ability to get the Men in Red on the front foot saw Spencer squeeze home. Back to their full contingent, Chiefs reverted to type and it played dividends. Held up twice, Rob Baxter’s men remained patient and controlled the tempo with several picks in the tight. Itoje headed to the sin bin for stepping out the line too early and Ewers brushed the whitewash with a little help from his friends. Exeter advanced from there. The lively Jack Nowell created havoc and Simmonds’s cheeky footwork got them in behind and Jack Yeandle removed two Saracens players from the picture to allow Jonny Hill room to flop over. Simmonds cancelled out three points from Farrell with the clock in the red to send Chiefs into the interval six points ahead. Momentum swung back Saracens’ way early in the second half but try as they might in the opening 15 minutes of the half, Exeter kept them at bay, forcing errors and edging away from danger. Despite dominating possession, holes proved hard to come by for the Wolfpack who continuously hammered the Chiefs defensive line. With their tails up, the team in first place after 22 rounds strengthened their grip on the scoreline. Sam Skinner’s jaunt down the right was brought to a halt metres out and Slade picked up to stretch into the corner. Their 11-point lead was short-lived as Saracens regained the ball from the restart and replied immediately. Farrell’s pinpoint crossfield kick was met by the leaping Williams and he squirmed over to provide Sarries a lifeline. Farrell’s accurate touchline follow-up put a spring in the step of the European champions and soon they were in front. Richard Wigglesworth put in a clever run from the back of a ruck and his gallop into space set up Maitland on the overlap. Then it was game over as a relentless effort, as we have seen so many times this campaign, saw George go in under the sticks to seal victory ahead of Sam Hill’s consolation.

THANK YOU

We have loved putting this Newspaper together for the last three years. When we started there was only the Broadway Website devoted to Mill Hill in the area. Sadly we are to take a break from producing the monthly paper. It takes up a huge amount of time for those involved and we have had problems with internet abuse from a small section of the community which has added to the worklload. After advice we have made this decision. Reluctantly we have decided this issue will be the last one for the time being. If you have any comments or wish to contact us then use the email address on page 3. The Mill Hill Guide continues and is taking advertising right now for the 2020 issue and space is fast selling out. Use contact on Page 3.. The Broadway site continues as does the Neighbourhood Forum Facebook. The newsletter will continue from the Forum if you are signed up for the mailing list. If we return we will let everyone know on our Facebook Group which remains open at Mill Hill Today and Broadway.
