The first month of 2019 is over and already much has happened not least our High Street which has seen two new openings announced and one closure. 2019 will be a year of change and so it is important that we meet it as a united community. In this month’s issue the biggest ever proposed development of a site - Pentavia is our focus. We are not against redevelopment or progress. We welcome it. This particular development is however with great problems and therefore was turned down by our Barnet Council planners. They did the right thing. Now it is with the Mayor of London whom we all know is under great pressure to provide as many homes as possible in the Capital. Let us all hope that he will take on board our views when he makes his decisions regarding Pentavia and make it a scheme that does not harm the environment and area. As always please support our local shops and businesses - and our AirBnB owners ! a new way of staying is now in several places in the area. What a great way of inviting friends and family to stay. #meetyourneighbours

MILL & BREW CHEF HELPS EX SERVICEMAN | Makes Evening Standard

MILL and BREW has fast become one of the favourite spots on the Broadway for coffee and food. With its rustic styled interior, excellent coffee and quality food at great prices who can resist going in when in the area ? To add to this at the beginning of the year a story broke in the mainstream press - Evening Standard - about great work that the Mill & Brew Head Chef Aidan is doing to help an ex Serviceman. We are proud to have Mill & Brew and Aiden on the Broadway and if you have not yet visited then you must !! THE STORY One of Jamie Oliver’s protegés from the famous ‘15’ programme has learned more from his famous mentor than cooking. Aidan Mannion, recently voted one of the UK’s top chefs under 21, is a man on a mission to restart the career of a former serviceman. Aidan, who is head chef at Mill and Brew in Mill Hill, has embraced Jamie’s generosity of spirit and is paying it forward in spades. Aidan came across a food blog written by Pete Hobbs (32), an ex-Royal Engineer who was badly injured, nearly died from sepsis and still suffers from serious PTSD. Like so many veterans, Pete has struggled to reintegrate into civilian society, despite being massively helped by the Back on Track Charity, set up to offer wounded veterans medical and emotional support. As a keen foodie, one of Pete’s many strategies to give his life new purpose has been to post restaurant reviews online. Aidan took a keen interest in Pete’s posts and reached out to him, inviting him up to London. Aidan not only welcomed the veteran with open arms, he offered a culinary apprenticeship, which started a few days ago and a firm friendship has now been forged over the pasta. Pete commented that: “I feel my life is taking a turn for the better. I have always been interested in cooking and now I have managed to make some awesome pasta and a truly next-level ravioli”. With a window into the restaurant industry, Pete has now experienced genuine hope for his future. After years of being borderline homeless, Pete’s confidence was rock bottom and his default setting was despair. “I can’t thank Aidan enough”, he says, “the guy is a legend”. Aidan remains typically modest, commenting that “Pete is a natural chef. He loves food and totally understands how to take care over every aspect of preparation. He was a joy to teach and I am so proud of him”. Aidan is now talking to the owner of Mill & Brew to set Pete up with an apprenticeship in the industry. Aidan has turned the Mill & Brew kitchen into a focus for foodies from far and wide, catering for vegans, vegetarians and meat-eaters alike. Paul has been waiting for some time for his life to turn around. Destitute and unemployed, he has been shuttled from pillar to post since he left the forces. Having nearly died from sepsis, Pete has also battled debilitating bouts of PTSD. Blogging about his passion for food has been the only thing, apart from his cats, which has kept him centred and it was through this glimpse of his ability that Aidan sensed a kindred spirit. As Paul comments: “It’s just mental and I am super thankful”.

NEWS FEATURE ABOUT HALE LANE While just over our border from NW7 in HA8 postcode, we welcome the improvements taking place at the shops opposite the Harvester pub (Jolly Badger) at the cross-roads, known to many still as the “Green Man” (not sure why it ever changed from such-perhaps it should revert?) in Hale Ward.

We have the new Hart Galleries that offers great artworks including fine sculptures to suit most budgets. www.hartgalleries.co.uk Next door at 151 Deans Lane, you have a great electrical wholesaler, Eyre & Ellinston. They are part of a major chain of 62 shops across UK and offer many services including “Lighting Design Solutions (LDS), which is a free of charge commercial lighting service, providing customers with an “A-Z” in Technical Design Proposals”. Having work done on your property? Get your builder to engage with Eyre & Ellinston. https://www.eyreandelliston.co.uk/ And Gentlemen, you also have one of the finest Barber shops in NW London at Tony & Vince, “the Original Barber shop”, 135 Hale Lane HA8 9QP

Soon the Co-op will be opening there at 157-161 Hale Lane (see Planning application 18/7332/ADV for their new sign below)

We think this will be a welcome addition, encouraging many to shop locally, hopefully at keen prices. We trust there is adequate provision behind for their deliveries and waste, and that the street numbers will also be displayed clearly in their sign.

E’S NEW SHOPPING FOR 2019

It is a nightmare for delivery drivers particularly, around London, when people do not prominently display their property’s number in the street. Even more so when the property has a name; this doesn’t help those trying to find you, as the name has no context within the street, whereas a number should indicate how far you are from the property you want to find. You will all have noticed the delivery drivers going up & down streets looking for the correct property in their diesel vans and motorbikes, and of course increasing the air pollution, we should all be trying to minimise. Of course, it could be a care worker looking for the address of an elderly person, and left searching for the property with only a name, not a number in the street.

Numbers in the street are most significant; please make sure your property, display’s it’s number clearly, and that it is preferably illuminated at night.

BY JOHN GILLETT

Proposed Redevelopment of Pentavia Retail Park, Mill Hill, London NW7 When we all moved to Mill Hill, the big factors in our decision process were low-rise homes built for families, large open green spaces, its proximity to Central London and that it offered a safe environment with good schools etc.

Your solicitor will have done a “search” on your behalf and the LOCAL Plan adopted 11th September 2012 (The Core Strategy is a Development Plan Document (DPD) setting out the long-term spatial vision and strategic objectives for the Local Planning Authority area,) will have informed you of Barnet’s “Suburban Character”. This

document at 10.2.15 goes on to say that “In order to protect and enhance Barnet’s distinctive character the

Development Management Policies DPD provides policy to clarify the key considerations that new design should adhere to. This policy framework for our residential suburbs is supported by our Residential Design Guidance SPD23 which, within the context of the six secondary typologies identified in the Characterisation Study, provides design guidelines for those places with a consistent and coherent architectural character, and design guidance for places where further flatted development will not detract from prevailing character.” Map 8 of the Local Plan, registers existing “tall buildings” (8 storeys or 26 metres high) and important “local views”. One such view is from the Mill Field on the Ridgeway, noted as view A on Map 8 – The proposed development at Pentavia is right in this view line and would destroy it. The Local plan goes on to state where Barnet may permit further tall buildings, and the site at Pentavia is definitely not included in the list of appropriate locations.

We should all be able to rely on this statutory and strategic planning guidance to safeguard us from unwanted developments that alter the very fabric of our neighbourhood!

Further there was a site specific “Design Brief” prepared by the Council in 2016 and it states that “this site is elevated above the surrounding area, it is visible from a number of locations including Mill Hill Village and the Watling Estate, as well as a number of parks and recreation areas. For this reason, any proposed redevelopment incorporating blocks of 4 to 7 storeys is likely to be quite visible. The design must not appear overbearing on the Barnet skyline nor to adjoining residential areas, and as noted previously must give full and due consideration.”

The Colindale Area Action Plan and subsequently the Grahame Park Supplementary Planning Document (SPD), provided very specific guidance on building design over the Motorway and Railway tracks from Pentavia, which site as noted is considerably higher anyway, than for example the ground level along Grahame Park Way.

The proposed developments at Pentavia will tower over these new homes and the surrounding areas of Mill Hill. If we generously suggest that the current building is the equivalent of 3 storeys, then the new building as proposed would reach up to the very top of the picture on the right above. The new properties at Trinity Square NW9(bottom right) have been correctly built as set out in the SPD and range from 3 to 5 storey in height.

We look forward to a redevelopment at Pentavia, but not as proposed to such height and density, with buildings up to 16 storeys (counting the ground floor), dominating our skyline and being totally out of character with every property around them. For example, the picture (computer generated) to the right here shows a marked improvement to the landscaping at Bunns Lane with “pedestrian only access (i.e. NOT Cycles as well) from the site, and is to be commended! The road looks wider than is remembered, relative to all around, but who said the camera doesn’t lie!

Neighbourhood Forum When writing to the Mayor of London to object to this scheme, you might “pick & mix” from the points tabled below in no particular order, in your “own words”, please

• •

• •

• •

• • •

• •

The air quality assessment is sparse in respect of actual data of on-site conditions and relies on modelling. The noise and air quality mitigating measures are not enough to ensure quality residential provision. Keeping windows locked shut is untenable. An assessment of the Air Quality issues that will result from this development for surrounding communities has not been provided. Over 25% of habitable rooms within the proposal would not meet BRE target light values Noise levels were monitored over 5 days in July 2015 – this is unlikely to be the appropriate timing due to summer holidays. The amenity space on roofs will have significant noise and air quality issues, so not usable. The very limited number of parking spaces will apparently be charged at £75 per month on top of the rent for each flat. This will encourage residents to park off-site in already highly congested residential side roads, rather than paying this additional charge. Vehicles (including cycles) exiting the development must travel north along the A1/A41 to the already heavily congested Mill Hill Circus, that was deemed to urgently need redesigning to improve traffic flow; but this scheme due to have been implemented by now, has been cancelled by the Mayor of London/TfL Barnet Council’s Local Plan specifically states where “tall buildings” (8 storeys & above) can be built across the Borough. This is not one of those designated sites and therefore the scheme is not policy compliant. The Council’s Design Brief for how the site should be developed, has been totally ignored. “Truly affordable housing” is not being provided by the scheme. There are 598 flats currently available to rent in NW7 and the immediate surrounding area, according to Zoopla – clearly there is not the demand for this development. Mill Hill is already expected to increase in population terms between 2011 and 2030 by 50%, without the addition of this development. The supporting infrastructure (medical facilities, schooling, road, bus, rail links) cannot cope now. Local roads including Bunns Lane & Grahame Park Way are heavily used today and often gridlocked at peak times. They simply cannot cope with any more traffic. The density of dwellings per hectare is equivalent to a site with excellent public transport links in a Central London Urban setting. This site is in a PTAL 1b location where the density recommended is 1/3rd of that proposed. The Height, Massing and Density of dwellings proposed in this scheme is not policy compliant. The scheme fails to provide the required sensitivity to local context where all properties are for families in low-rise buildings. The impact of the height scale and mass of the proposed scheme would wreck designated site-lines from the Mill Field on the Ridgeway Mill Hill, and from Sunnyfields Park across to Harrow.

Mill Hill Business Network Join The Network as an Associate for FREE or for a small fee get our REWARDS programme High Streets nationally are having a hard time. High Streets operators can complain about the impact, of the recession, of on-line shopping, higher rents & rates, lack of parking etc. On the plus side consumer behaviour is changing and people are shopping in local stores for food more frequently, perhaps to save on wastage or to “top-up” a shop done on-line or at an out of town retail store. Home delivery, which has become more popular recently will increase as people value their leisure time more and reduce their dependency on private cars in favour of walking, cycling or using public transport as we are told we have to do! Consumers are becoming more discerning too and, in many cases, where a purchase is not for a recognisable, generally available, product code, they want to see and touch before they buy. The move to organic products and to vegetarian or vegan tastes, again fuels this move back towards local stores. People expect friendly added value service not just lowest price. A shop that can genuinely and professionally advise and guide consumer selection (without being overtly pushy) will do well and will develop loyal customers who return to buy more. If you genuinely “add-value” with a smile, then the customer experience will be popular. If not, there are plenty of other places to shop. And the same is true for restaurants; even more so when social media can be used to review the experience and people are more likely to be negative than give a positive comment. The trend then, back to shopping locally, and an increase in people’s desire to eat out, are both good for High Streets that have a balanced quality offering. Spending on food and drink typically accounts for more than 50% of total leisure spending, compared to around 15% on ‘cultural services’ (e.g. going to the cinema, theatre, art galleries or live music) and under 10% on hotels, ‘games of chance’ and recreation/sporting services. There is scope for town centres to capitalise on this trend, redefining their function as leisure ‘destinations’ in their own right. The development of a strong commercial leisure offer can help to increase footfall, particularly outside of retail hours, and visitors undertaking ‘linked trips’ between retail, leisure and other uses also spend increased dwell-time in centres. Markets are a key generator of footfall as well as a known attractor to centres. We are trying with the support of our Councillors to create the “Mill Hill Businesses Network”, to encourage co-ordinated development of Mill Hill‘s commercial activities, towards a more sustainable future for all, and to ensure that are able to buy locally. This is a new MHNF initiative and we trust it will receive widespread support as we move towards 2020 when the Broadway will be 100 years young.

However, on the last evening of January the snow arrived again overnight leading to school closures and snowy pavements, so as we go to press we can see snow outside ! FEATURE |AIRBn Staying in Mill Hill

For many years it has been a problem finding somewhere to stay in central Mill Hill by the Broadway. We do not have a hotel or even a B & B next to the Broadway. This is a real problem for visitors to the area whether they be friends - family - rugby supporters etc. It means the shops and restaurants do not benefit from any overnight visiting trade.

INTRODUCING MARC HELLER

The Owner of the Airbnb is popular local property expert and founder of the largest Social Media Forum for us in Mill Hill called MILL HILL FAMILIES on Facebook. Marc has raised many thousands of pounds for local charities in the last 18 months via Mill Hill Families and the group now has over 7,000 members and with business links to the excellent Laurel Leaf Business Network plus a team of committed local admins the site has gone from strength to strength since last summer. We asked Marc about the Facebook group a few months ago and thought this time we would ask about what else he is up to in the area. We found out that like us he also wants to help people come to Mill Hill and have great lives by him providing a specialised property service. Here is what he told us. “I work in property. I am mainly a private landlord……my family own a property portfolio and I handle all the lettings (our family property website is www.amazanproperties.co.uk). Over the years I have become very good at marketing properties and renting them out to quality tenants. So much so that I also rent properties for family, friends and people who get referred to me. I charge a modest commission fee, I do not charge VAT and I do not charge renewal fees which can save my private clients thousands of pounds” Marc Heller - Owner of the Off Broadway Airbnb We support all local businesses and Marc has made a huge contribution to our community through his tireless work setting up the Facebook group and maintaining it. We are very supportive of all our Estate Agents and Landlords who play a big part in making Mill Hill a beautiful and welcoming place to live for us all. LONDON ARTS HUB REVIEW OPENINGS REVIEWS MUSICALS

ASPECTS OF LOVE | Southwark Playhouse The Andrew Lloyd Webber musical opened in early January and we saw the first preview. It was a perfect sized theatre for this lovely show featuring some of the best music ALW has written. With West End stars in the lead parts the quality of singing was high and the production delighted the sell out audience. It may transfer - but hopefully to a small theatre to allow its charn to survive. OPERA QUEEN OF SPADES (OPERA) ROYAL OPERA HOUSE A stunning opening at the ROH for this productio which features loads of Tchaikovsky’smirrors and flashing lights - and a stripping Catherine The Great ( Seriously ) Some of the more conservative audience members were literally shaken out of their seats. Exciting and ground breaking and the music and performances were top notch. Hopefully it will return - if it does get a ticket and learn the story before you go because with all that action is does get a bit confusing at times ! DANCE / BALLET THE TWO PIGEONS ROYAL BALLET ROYAL OPERA HOUSE Ashton’s 1961 one hour ballet features live pigeons ! it is a lovely short ballet full of exciting choreography and a fabulous score. A great ballet to watch for all ages.

COMING UP OPERA ENO Free Tickets for Under 18s on SaturdaysIf you have kids under 18 then this is an offer not to be missed. DOMINGO at the ROYAL OPERA REVIEW LA TRAVIATA ROYAL OPERA HOUSE JANUARY ( 3 Casts ) The Richard Eyre production of La Traviata has been at the Royal Opera House for 25 years. It still looks sumptuous. It may not be an exciting modern style production but audiences love it and it sells out every time it is produced. The story of a Parisian Courtesan ( based on a true story ) is one of the most heart wreching stories on the stage. Verdi provides some of the best opera melodies and the famous drinking song is known to everyone. The First Night cast saw JAHO as Violetta in a role she has made her own since 2011 when stepping in at the last minute as a replacement. Sung with passion and emotion she is totally amazing in the part. The second cast saw Angel Blue in the Violetta role as her debut at the Royal Opera House and she was well receieved and showed off her large and beautiful voice. The final cast was JAHO as Violetta and the GERMON ( father of Alfredo her love interest ) played by the famous PLACIDO DOMINGO. This performance was live streamed to cinemas around the world. The Opera House was packed out and there was a huge buzz of excitement. Domingo is now 78 years old and his voice is now baritone rather than tenor. However, he still has incredible stage charisma and his baritone is technically excellent and filled the Opera House. Needless to say Domingo’s night brought the house down and every performance that we saw was excellent. If you have not seen this production then the next time it is performed you really must go along - it is ideal for a first opera experience or a 1000th.

Castranovo ( Alfredo) Jaho ( Violetta ) Domingo (Germont)

NEWS FROM MHMTC By Farhat Dar Mill Hill Musical Theatre Company

PREVIEW

HOW YOU CAN SEE ME AND MY GIRL IN MARCH As you may already know, MHMTC’s March production is Noel Gay’s classic British musical comedy Me And My Girl. A simple little tale about a male equivalent of Pygmalion's Eliza Doolittle, Me And My Girl became one of Britain's most successful musicals in its original run in 1937, and achieved even greater success when it was revived and rewritten 50 years later by Stephen Fry. You will definitely recognise many of the songs, from Lambeth Walk and The Sun Has Got His Hat On to Leaning On A Lamp and the title song Me And My Girl.

The light-hearted plot starts with the shocking news that Lord Hareford has passed away and that he sired an illegitimate heir during a youthful fling with a working-class woman. The heir is tracked down and brought to Hareford Hall for the family's inspection and they discover, to their horror, that he is cockney costermonger Bill Snibson (played by Rob Murrary), but his aunt, the Duchess (Suzy Jarvis), is determined to make a gentleman of him and tries to separate him from his true love Sally (Saju Vaswani). Will the likes of flirty Lady Jacqueline and the pull of his new life tear the sweethearts apart? Many comic situations ensure, of course, before the cheerful conclusion.

It’s a show not to be missed. But to see it you must be a Patron of MHMTC. Patrons are the lifeblood of MHMTC, and without them we would be in a financial bind. The income is essential in helping to fund our main show in the autumn, as production costs (staging, orchestra, sound, hall hire, etc) are constantly increasing

Basically, it costs £15 for adults and £9 for under 16s to become a Patron for a calendar year, starting in January. For this subscription fee, you will receive an invitation to see Me And My Girl, which is being performed for two nights on Friday 29 & Saturday 30 March (curtain up 7.30pm) at Hartley Hall, Flower Lane.

Also, being a Patron, you will get priority booking for our main autumn production and reduced ticket price for the gala performances, and invitation to our extremely popular, twice-yearly Quiz Nights (the next one on 9 February is fully booked).

If you would like to become a Patron, please contact : James Bingham, Acting Patrons’ Secretary on 01923 269923 or email : patrons@mhmtc.co.uk SEE PAGE 7 FOR EXCLUSIVE ANNOUNCEMENT ABOUT OUR AUTUMN PRODUCTION

SPORT MILL HILL RUGBY CLUB by Hugo Webster

Club News: 2019 brings the 2nd half of the rugby season and Mill Hill RFC’s league positions stand healthy. The 1st XV stand in second place only behind undefeated London Scottish and the 2nd XV sit in third in their respective league. The 1st XV entered two cup competitions this year and their campaign in the Herts-Middlesex saw they guys reach the semi-finals before narrowly losing to Watford. Our Project Rugby mixed ability team has continued to grow and has great things on the horizon. The December/January period was a lively one for the social calendar, one we encourage all the local community to get involved in. We hosted (and won) in the Barnet Eye Community Awards along with Barnet Mencap, our partners in Project Rugby. We also played hosts to local Saracens supporters’ group ‘Sarries On Tour’ and Mill Hill’s relationship with the rugby community really showed in the huge amount of people coming through the doors especially for the European cup game vs. Glasgow warriors. After counting up we can reveal for ‘Movember’ Mill Hill RFC raised over £500 for the charity. Not all the news is good – but we must share. The 2nd XV is suffering from short numbers and have had to field a short side for a couple of games on the bounce. With many clubs at the amateur level, even ones as old and if not older than us, folding and closing their doors, the weakening of the 2nd XV is of great concern. So if you’re reading this article and have thought about picking up a rugby ball, please don’t hesitate to do so! If you’ve not played in a long time but the heavy hits of the higher leagues have become too much, then the 2nds is a good place to return to rugby! So what’s to come? The near future is packed with rugby greatness! On January 30th from 18:00-21:00 our Project Rugby side have their next tournament at Allianz Park, home of Saracens, entry is FREE so come along and support mixed ability rugby! On the 29th – the day before we’re hosting a taster session for our Project Rugby side, FREE so come along! The 6 Nations is upon us from Friday 1st Feb! We urge everyone who is looking for a place to watch the 6 nations action to come along and enjoy it with us in the best rugby atmosphere! Not only does the beginning of the year hold a great rugby competition but in September of 2019 it’s the rugby world cup! Watch this space for news on how to follow! We look forward to a good start to the year and remember, as always, all are welcome through our doors! 1st XV results: 12th Jan – Uxbridge 22 – 36 Mill Hill ( Win, League) 19th Jan – Mill Hill 19 – 20 Watford (Loss, Cup) 26th Jan - Mill Hill 52 – 0 London French (Win, League) From all of Mill Hill Rugby Football Club, we hope your 2019 have got off to a fantastic start
