2018 did not start well with the sad death of a local shopkeeper. However, since then the community has pulled together in a fantastic way to meet together regularly and increase the sense of community. New initiatives such as the Mill Hill and Colindale Litter Pickers - new events like Comedy at the Hub - and many regular events getting sold out including Fiddler on the Roof and the Messiah and the growing communities on the web including Mill Hill Families, Inside Mill HIll and Mill Hill Broadway now all have thousands of members/followers. 2019 will also have challenges such as the long awaited decision on Pentavia from the Mayor of London and the growing problems with excess traffic in the area. However, as a community if we continue to work together we can deal with all these things and protect and improve our area.

CHRISTMAS MESSAGE FROM

ANDREW DISMORE There is so much going on - and change is rarely for the better! The Pentavia application is now before the Mayor - I’ve already submitted objections, including due to inadequate affordable homes. Hasmonean School’s new plan is more than a tweak - it mustn’t turn into a green land grab. On a more positive note, Saracens and Middlesex University are building a new stand which I believe will be an improvement , even if it is being financed by a multi million loan from the Council. My almost 20 year campaign for pedestrian and cyclist safety at Stirling Corner is at last winning; as is step free access at Mill Hill East tube where at long last TfL have agreed to do it.. After representing Mill Hill for 21 years, I can’t recall a time when the area hasn’t kept me as busy as now!

Court Garden Classic Cuvée English Quality Sparkling Wine £25.99 Made up of the classic Champagne blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir & Pinot Meunier and made in the traditional Champagne method this English sparkler is every bit as good (if not better!?) than its French counterpart. Pale silver lime-leaf green, continuous small bubbles; toasty, under-ripe pineapple and greengage fruit behind; Brut-style, balanced with creamy mousse and great freshness, long finish. Brilliant as an aperitif on its own or wonderful paired with seafood.

Ginestet Classique Sauternes (50cl) 2015 £13.95 A classic botrytis noble nose; rich in honey and sweet floral tones with hints of citrus marmalade. The palate is rich and smooth with similar sweet floral and honeyed apricot flavours but with a faintly citrus note in the finish which makes it very moorish. The ultimate dessert wine - serve chilled with a host of fruit or cream based desserts. Try also blue cheese such as Roquefort or Stilton. Or serve as the French also do, as an aperitif, or with paté based canapes. We are delighted that Wine Expert Andy Smith from Mill Hill’s oldest independent wine shop has joined our writing team to bring you the latest news on Wines - tastings - and offers each month. PLANNING MATTERs Lloyds Bank:

The application to turn the Lloyds Bank into a Domino’s Pizza take-away was refused by the Council’s Planning Committee, but the applicant has decided to appeal and therefore the Planning Inspectorate will now review the scheme to see whether it should go forward. We have 3 businesses currently offering Pizzas within 70 yards of the old Bank and they are rarely over busy. There is a fourth (Nero) at Apex Corner and Molto Pizza went out of business within the last 12 months. We consider that if allowed there would be an “Over-concentration” of businesses with very similar offerings and this would be detrimental to the future development of our High Street. The Council refused the change of Class use for Mill & Brew last year, to allow them to offer a full restaurant service, and this is the most recent precedent that should be considered when reviewing the Domino’s application. Further the family that lives above the Lloyds building has enjoyed the 9.00 to 17.00 operation 5 days per week of the bank, and the opening hours proposed by Domino’s would be probably run counter to “Agents of Change” legislation. A date for the Appeal has not yet been set. Millbrook Park. Phases 6 & 6B are currently being reviewed. Planning applications 18/6351/RMA and 18/6640/FUL can be reviewed on the Council’s Planning Portal. There are serious issues regarding “overlooking” of the Frith Grange Scout Camp as Block HH of Phase 6 & the revised design of Phase 6B are now proposed to be 6 storey buildings. Further the major issue of parking around the Primary School, notably at school drop-off & collection times will be made worse by the opening of North & East streets. This issue really needs to be resolved now before Phase 6 is allowed to proceed. Further, existing residents across Millbrook Park are complaining about the lack of parking provision, streets that are too narrow to allow for parking, people parking on pavements, etc. Residents should perhaps use the opportunity to comment on these 2 Phase applications to express these issues openly and formally. There needs to be input from existing residents now, if any changes are to be made, before it is too late. The standards being used for the allocation of parking are proving unrealistic in practice, and some planners/ developers want to see the standards reduced.

Neighbourhood Forum Mitzvah Day

Some 15 people from the wider Mill Hill community were selected to attend a Mitzvah Day Appreciation Tea on Sunday 18th November at the Mill Hill Synagogue. The tea, with delicious home-baked cakes, scones and very English cucumber sandwiches were served by volunteers and the entertainment included singing and dancing acts, followed by group dancing. This was a great new initiative and recorded how fortunate we all are to live in such a wonderful community. The junior choir from St Michal’s Church sang Jewish songs following tuition from one of the Synagogues music masters.

Many topics were aired, and we discussed the Mill Hill Winter Festival scheduled for the Broadway on Friday 30th November (with the lights being switched on at 5.00pm) and Saturday 1st December. We agreed that there should be a Menorah placed in the Town Square alongside the Xmas Tree, on Monday 3rd December for Chanukah. There will be a short service at 5.30pm with Candle lighting at 5.45pm, Music, free Donuts and Dreidels. This event, as all our events in Mill Hill, is of course open to all, and we hope YOU will all visit the Winter Festival and the Chanukah ceremony.

GET INVOLVED LOCAL CLASSES & EVENTS If you are making any New Year resolutions then why not get involved in a local class or event in the Arts. Mill Hill has loads of dance classes for kids ( and some for adults ) Just look at these two pages for the leading providers - but if they do not suit you then there are also classes at The Hartley Hall - Orion School - Copthall School etc and a quick Google will provide you with details of such classes. Ideal for your kids - both boys and girls can benefit from dance - drama - music. In addition if you wish to sing then there are choirs including the PRO ARTE choir and several church choirs who are always looking for new members. Singing is a great way of de-stressing and is also fun and helps to get to know many others in the local community. So rather than diet - pump iron ( Though both are fun and healthy ) why not make 2019 the year of the Singing or Dance class ! The benefits are massive. 2019 ! Make it your year !

LONDON ARTS H REVIEW STANDING OVATION FOR MILL HILL MESSIAH | Review LPAC Nov 24 2018

At the end of the Messiah in a packed out St Michael's Church in Mill Hill last night, many of the audience rose to their feet to show their appreciation. It was much deserved for a fabulous performance of one of the most famous of choral works.

When arriving at 7p.m to get a good seat, the front 6 rows were already occupied and by 7.20p.m the Church was full including the choir stalls and area at the rear, with stragglers struggling to find a place to view the concert. The Messiah is a popular work and in Mill Hill in 2018 we have already seen the local Musical Company sell out a week of Fiddler on the Roof weeks in advance of their run. Live music is more popular than ever. Exciting times.

The first half of the concert was Part 1. This dealt with the prophecies in the Old Testament of the coming Messiah and the birth. Fitting to listen to just before the Advent season. The evening opened with the excellent Orchestra Nova who played skillfully all evening under conductor Tom Winpenny, and recitative by tenor soloist Gareth Treseder (www.garethtreseder.com ) whose voice rang around the Church. The London Pro Arte Choir (LPAC) had to wait for their first chorus which is the famous "And the Glory of the Lord" which is always a tough ask with its TopA for the Sopranos but they started with clear diction and wonderful texture, which has become their hallmark under Tom Winpenny's direction. The bass soloist Lawrence Wallington was a last minute replacement, but you would never have guessed. His powerful, dramatic bass voice shaking the foundations of St Michael's from his first entrance. The alto soloist Sarah Denbee (www.sarahdenbee.co.uk ) and soprano soloist Elenor Bowers- Jolley (www.comeandsingcompany. co.uk) both impressed in the first half with excellent singing. The first half ended with the audience already very impressed and ready for the famous refreshments. Although it was heard that the Marmalade was missing from the Food Stall this year !

HUB REVIEW

REVIEW

Nothing could have prepared the audience for the second half. The Second Part of the the Messiah deals with the Passion and death of Christ. Beautifully sung by soloists and choir. Culminating in the famous and favourite Hallelujah chorus. This was the point where the chorus let rip and the vocal fireworks started. Up until this point the Chorus had been singing beautifully but they then showed that they do have more power and bite as a unit as in this chorus they upped the passion by 100% backed by timpani and trumpets in the orchestra, this was as good a Hallelujah chorus as I have ever heard ( and I have seen the Messiah over 50 times ) and it drew gasps and oohs when it finished from the audience again I have never heard that before either ! Part Three of the Messiah is about the resurrection and the choir, soloists and orchestra realising that they were now taking part in a very special evening gave their all. Elenor Bowers excelled with I know My Redeemer liveth and Lawrence Wallington had the audience enthralled with The Trumpet Shall Sound with his dramatic and rich delivery. The concert finished with the seven minute chorus Worthy is The Lamb - with its counterpoint - and rising Amens at the end. With St Michaels awash with a beautiful sound many in the audience jumped to their feet with applause and cheers. The Messiah is such a glorious work. This performance in an intimate church showed that the piece in the right hands has tremendous power. With star soloists who delivered every aria superbly, an orchestra who played their hearts out beautifully all evening, and a choir which grew in confidence and panache during the evening and delivered the big choruses in a memorable and exciting way; it was a wonderful night. LPAC return to St Michaels to raise money for the Noah;s Ark Hospice on Saturday 8 December at 5p.m. Including a Cecilia McDowell piece and carols for all. At just ÂŁ10 hopefully many will turn up to support the Choir and the Hospice. The next Concert is on Saturday 23 March and is a mixed programme of Mendelssohn, Bruckner and Wesley. Choral music is in great shape in Mill Hill - and if you sing or want to sing - then why not join the choir - email them for details here membership@lpac.org.uk

HART GALLERY OPENING A new fine art gallery has opened in North West London. It has been a long time since we have had an Art Gallery or shop in Edgware/ Mill Hill ! but all that changed in November with the opening of a fabulous new Gallery on the border of Mill Hill/Edgware opposite the Harvester Restaurant. The Gallery had a special open evening to preview the excellent art that is on display. On a cold winters night many attended and had drinks and nibbles and saw how this new Gallery is going to change the way we think and buy art in the area. Many who attended were very impressed and within days many items were already sold and making their way to homes in the area. The Gallery owners are very excited to open in the area and told us : “At Hart Galleries on Hale Lane in Edgware we have a passion for all types of contemporary art including originals and limited editions and we also have a wide range of sculptures and glassware to suit all tastes and budgets.

We asked the Gallery what they can offer local residents : “We are open 7 days a week and provide complimentary home viewings and art consultations at your home or business making buying art a very personal service. We also provide a bespoke framing service. We look forward to welcoming you in the art gallery.

OTHER NEWS FROM MHMTC By Farhat Dar Mill Hill Musical Theatre Company CHARITY COFFEE MORNING IN AID OF FIGHT BLADDER CANCER We are holding our annual coffee morning on Sunday 9 December from 11.30am in the foyer of Hartley Hall. In the past year, one of our much-loved members has been battling bladder cancer in the past year – and we’re delighted to say he is much better now. So, this year, we are raising cash for Fight Bladder Cancer, a cause that’s now close to our hearts. Bladder cancer the fourth most common cancer in men and 16th most common in women in the UK, and despite being quite widespread, it’s not really talked about. The majority of cases occur in men aged over 60, but increasingly people of all ages and gender are being diagnosed. Figures show that there are 5,300 deaths every year, and incidences are rising among women due to smoking. However, if caught early, there is a good chance for survival. So it’s important to raise awareness, and we’ll have leaflets to hand out on the day. Please come along for delicious cake and a cuppa, and help Fight Bladder Cancer! And please feel free to bring along cakes, biscuits and savouries along to help raise as much cash as possible. For more information, please call 07943 195490.

LET’S GET QUIZZING AGAIN Don’t forget that MHMTC’s popular Quiz Night is next being held on Saturday 9 February at 7.30pm. It will again be held at Trinity Church, 100 The Broadway in Mill Hill. We’re hoping to have our brilliant quizmaster Grant Graves back in the hot seat. Tickets cost £12.50, and a yummy fish-and-chips supper is included in the price. Please book your ticket by calling 01923 247098 or emailing info@mhmtc.co.uk

Carol Services - Panto Interview and much more

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH JAMES PHELPS

from Harry Potter and Starring as the VOICE of the GIANT in our first ever local Pro Panto

Q1: James your back on the stage this time in the Greater Game at Waterloo East Theatre. Could you tell us a little bit more about the show and who you are playing in it? It is the true story of Clapton Orient football club who were the first English club to sign up in mass to fight in the first world war. The story shows their lives as a team and their families to going to the front line. I'm playing Richard McFadden who was their top goal scorer and real life hero even before the war (he saved 2 kids from drowning in the River Lea and a man from a burning building!) Q2: As an actor what are the differences between acting on stage and screen? For stage you need to remember all the script! Also there is an immediate feed back to the performance and buzz on stage that isn't usually there on a film set. Q3: Your also adding your vocal talents for the very first professional pantomime in Mill Hill Library...did you go to pantomime when you were younger? If so what did you enjoy about it? I did. I think it is as much to do with the Christmas period in England as advent calendars and football on Boxing Day. I loved the tradition of saying 'he's behind you' and boo and hissing the baddies. Q4: Your going to be providing the voice of the giant for the Library pantomime, famously you worked with a giant in the Harry Potter film series played by Robbie Coltrane! How did they make him seem so big on the screen? There was a few tricks, some of which I can't say. But from far away Martin Bayfield had his own Hagrid costume and he would portray him from wide angles. Q4: The Pantomime is in Mill Hill library, how important do you think it is for children and families to have access to Libraries? I think it is very important. Libraries aren't just a place for books anymore, but a place for all walks of the community to come together. Q5: Did you have a favourite book growing up? Any number of Roal Dahls books would be my favourite. I couldn't tell you the amount of times I read 'Going Solo' or 'Charlie & The Great Glass Elevator ' Q6: If you had three wishes from a magical fairy was would they be? 1) To go wing walking (I have done bungee, skydive etc so this seems the logical next step..) 2) Birmingham City to get promotion again 3) Play a round of golf at Augusta (home of the Masters).

MILL HILL RUGBY CLUB Celebrating 80 Years

Club News: ‘Tis the season to be jolly! The festive period and a new year brings much to Mill Hill RFC’s doors, to which as always, the community at large is invited! We’ve back to back festivities on the way starting early December with The Barnet Eye Community Awards on the 14th and on the following day the official Mill Hill Rugby Club Christmas party Dec. 15th. Both events are open to everybody so feel free to come along. With our ever-blossoming friendships with fan groups of Saracens, it pleases us to announce the Sarries On Tour group will be having their Christmas Party at Mill Hill RFC too on the 29th December after the premiership fixture against Worcester. All supporters welcome! (Saracens or otherwise, this is rugby remember!) With all the party talk done it’s now down to business! Both the 1st XV & 2nd XV have had a very positive month; fulfilling all their fixtures first and foremost, and with a success rate outweighing defeats. The 1st XV stand 2nd in their league of Herts-Middlesex 2 with only one league loss to London Scottish Lions, the amateur counterparts to the professional English Championship Club. The 2nd XV sit in third place in the Herts-Middlesex Merit 5 league. Having had many opposition drop out the 2’s have sought friendlies with opposition from teams in the leagues above with some good insight in the work that needs to be done to go up! Our Project Rugby Side, mixed ability rugby for all, has continued to grow in numbers every Tuesday night and we’re looking forward to announcing their next tournament, to be hosted more likely than not at a premiership venue! 1st XV league results: Mill Hill vs. L. Scottish – 59-5 (L) Mill Hill vs. Watford – 41-5 (W) Mill Hill vs. Stains – 35-19 (L) ( CUP MATCH ) A new year on the horizon… so what to expect? 2019 will bring the 2nd half of our season, all home and away fixtures are published so we hope to see some new supporters cheering us on! This brings Saracens 2nd half of the season too – as always, we’re open to everybody on Saracens match days so if you’ve no ticket you’ve no problem as we’re the perfect place to watch. We’re especially looking forward to the European cup match at Allianz Park, most notably, Glasgow Warriors coming down in January who last bought with them 3,000 supporters! The 2019 6 nations get underway from Feb 1st – 16th March – watch this space for all the goings on. And finally, le pièce de résistance – the 2019 Rugby World Cup! Starting late in the year Mill Hill RFC will be making sure this event from Tokyo in Japan is as accessible and enjoyable as possible for all those who wish to come and see the best rugby has to offer. Thank you all for your support in 2018, the community is our lifeblood and we hope to give back more in the coming year! From all of Mill Hill Rugby Football Club, Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, and a joyous New Year!
