PENTAVIA GETS APPROVED The long awaited decision about

the Pentavia Scheme was finally made by the Mayor of London at the end of July. After resistance from several local groups including the Preservation Society and the Neighbourhood Forum the decision to build over 800 homes on the old retail site alongside the road intersections by the motorway was given. The Mayor gave reasons for his decision the main one being the need for affordable housing and housing to meet his targets. Barnet Council had opposed the scheme and also the local MP Matthew Offord.

spaces of London. In doing this the only way to get enough units out of such developments is to build upwards and so towers of 16 to 40 storeys will become commonplace around the rail network in London. The same week saw Colindale Station get approved for a 29 storey tower development and new station by Barnet Council. Proposals for 25 storey towers have also been put in for High Barnet and a large scheme is planned at Finchley Central. A Hendon scheme of several 8+ storey towers was also approved by Barnet Council.

The affordable element has gone up to 41% in the new plans and could even reach 45%. The plans show more landscaping and more awareness of the local surroundings including only 200 car spaces.

The community remains stoic about the plans because it is recognised that homes are needed in Mill Hill and London. It is also recognised that cars lead to pollution and our roads are choked - so it is better to build with car clubs rather than parking spaces. Finally, affordable homes should be taking 50% of all these new deveopments with at least 10% of social housing.

The opposition’s main argument that the flats in particular a 16 storey tower were out of keeping with the area were brushed aside. The Mayor has decided that the rail corridors and motorway corridors of the capital are the best places to build developments to protect the green

Mill Hill has had many changes in the last 100 years. From farms and fields to new housing estates to major roads slicing through our park and High Street. We have come through all these changes stronger. We can embrace change whilst protecting our green spaces.

We have had to reduce the size of the paper because it is a voluntary one. In doing that sadly we cant take unsolicited features anymore. However, if you have an idea for something we should put in then please get in touch. The summer has seen more shops on the Broadway re-open. A very successful Summer Festival and Market and a positive feeling about the future. The housing that has been approved will bring us all new neighbours. We will be making them very welcome into Mill Hill and hope that with just 200 car parking spaces the worst fears of the community have been dealt with by the Mayor and developers. More developments will happen and we will be just as welcoming. We continue to host contributions from our community groups and organisations and we continue to represent the most active ones in our community. We do not cover crime - and we have a neutral view of politics both nationally and locally - and will not bend to bullying by any political group. Our aim is to be positive and to work to make the area better rather than moan. Thanks for reading !

LONDON PRO ARTE CHOIR REVIEW | Songs & Dances June 29 2019 LONDON PRO ARTE CHOIR ST MICHAEL's CHURCH, MILL HILL SATURDAY 29 JUNE 2019

On one of the the hottest days of the year with the temperature at 34 degrees the London Pro Arte Choir held their annual summer concert in St Michaels Church. The stone building cooling the air to make it comfortable for the gathered audience and performers. The opening set of Songs were by Cecilia McDowall the English composer who had worked with the choir on a premiere several years ago. As a huge fan of her music this set was a fantastic start to the concert. The choir attacking the text and music with gusto from the beginning. The soprano line soaring above the rest of the choir in a swirl of textures and text. The second song was left to the male voices of the choir who delivered the text with good clarity. The slower third song was followed by the O No John song which the choir sang with great spirit and obvious enjoyment. A piano solo by Charles Andrews followed - this was beautifully played. Charles has accompanied the choir for the last two or three years and is a superb musician. Sadly it was announced that this was his last performance with the choir because he is taking up a post at The Temple Church in London which is the finest Church choir in the World. Sad for the audience and choir in Mill Hill but for those who attend the Temple Church like myself it is fantastic news ! Thank you Charles for all you have done for the Choir and best wishes for your new post. The final set of songs in the first half of the concert was a variety of old and new. A real variety of styles tested the choir and some were more successful than others. The Greensleeves arrangement was of great interest to an arrangement by Dudley Cohen who was present at the concert - and the Sullivan and Elgar were particularly well sung. The famous summer interval with strawberries and Pimms followed which is an important part of these concerts. The sales of refreshments raises money for the choir and the social aspect for the community is also enjoyed by the audience. The second part started with a set of Old American Songs by Aaron Copland. These are very easy on the ear and the harmonies were fully exploited by the choir throughout. Simple Gifts is a well known tune - Lord of the Dance - and the choir sang the Copland arrangement really well. The final song is a party piece for many choirs and though the Pro Arte Choir resisted the temptation to ham it up like many USA show choirs - they delivered it with perfect timing and harmonies. Finally, the Bob Chilcott "Dances of Time" were sung and as the heat was subsiding in the Church these lush choral pieces were an ideal end to the concert, The strength of the Pro Arte Choir are the textures of harmony which conductor Tom Winpenny draws from them - especially in the mid paced songs of Bob Chilcott where they were fully on show. A standout song of the evening was the setting of Ecclesiastes 3 1 - 8 which saw the Choir and Charles Andrews hit the heights of blending beautiful harmonies, text and piano into a superb performance. The choir showing great progress over the past few years with Tom Winpenny and Charles Andrews to deliver a high standard of performance. As usual the audience warmly received the programme and once again went happy into the warm night. Next : The London Pro Arte Choir is holding a CHORAL WORKSHOP in September which is ideal for those who would like to explore singing. Whether you have sung before or a budding choral genius this one day workshop is for you. Just ÂŁ20 ( ÂŁ10 students ) 16+ Contact the Choir for more details. Price includes all music / refreshments etc. Next Concert : SATURDAY 23 NOVEMBER at ST MICHAEL's is Haydn's Creation !! This incredibly popular choral piece sells out most of its performance like the Messiah and is considered one of the gems of Choral singing. Lively with fantastic tunes - not to be missed.

NEWS FROM MHMTCBy Farhat Dar Mill Hill Musical Theatre Company ARTS | FEATURES | COMMUNITY NEWS |SPORTS | PROPERTY

OKLAHOMA! GOING BETTER THAN OK! MHMTC’s rehearsals for Oklahoma! are now in full swing, with director Robin Scarborough now expertly taking us through the show, scene-by-scene. And at the time of writing, we have set the whole of act one, including the songs, dancing and stage movement – a good three months before curtain up on Wednesday 23 October! Choreographer Nikki Hurley, who’s also a member of Elstree Productions, has put together some wonderful dance routines for us, including for the dramatic and sinister dream ballet, when Laurey (played by Ellie Taff) must decide whether to go to the Box Social with brooding, surly farmhand Jud Fry (David Rose), or her true-love Curly (Stephen Lanigan-O’Keeffe). We can’t thank Nikki enough for the great dance moves, which are graceful and fun, while taking into account our, erm, mixed dancing abilities. It’s shaping up to be a brilliant production. We all in stitches as some of the lines and comic scenes, particularly with the interplay of the show’s light-hearted characters of flirty Ado Annie (Georgia Dove), amorous cowboy Will Parker (Mark Sampson-Smith) and lothario travelling salesman Ali Hakim (Nigel Kelly).

Wanted! We’re pleased to have Emma Gross joining us for her first show, as part of the chorus. However, we need more farmers and cowboys on stage, so we’d like to put a shout out to all you men out there (who can sing and maybe dance a bit) to also come and join us for this most wonderful of musicals. Rehearsals take place on Mondays at 8pm, and also Wednesdays at 8pm from September, at Hartley Hall. Just email us at join@mhmtc.co.uk or call 07943 195490.

Quiz Night is coming MHMTC is holding its very popular autumn general-knowledge QUIZ NIGHT on Saturday, 21 September 2019, starts 7.30pm, at Trinity Church, 100 The Broadway, Mill Hill, NW7 3TB. If you’d like to take part, please email info@mhmtc.co.uk as soon as possible, as places are filling up fast! Tickets costs £12.50 per person, which includes fish and chips being served in the interval. Our quizzes are highly organised and great fun, and are a great revenue source for MHMTC at a time when production costs in amateur musical theatre are rising. So please come along and support us if you can.

Raising a tune – and funds – for Motor Neurone Disease Association A few members of MHMTC sang at a moving charity soiree in aid of Motor Neurone Disease Association on Tuesday 9 July 2019, at the Freud Museum in Hampstead. The evening (which included a tour round the fascinating home of Sigmund Freud and his daughter Anna) was organised by MHMTC’s David Rose on behalf of his firm, Michael Conn Goldsobel Solicitors. It’s a cause very close to the company’s heart, and over 70 family and friends attended the concert, where David, Barbara Shapiro, Kim Llewellyn, Grant Graves, Becky Gutowski, Carol Hobbs, Emma Gross, Chris Hubbard, James Penton and Farhat Dar, with the brilliant Sandra Friedman accompanying on piano. If you’d like to donate to this most worthy of causes, MNDA’s website is www.mndassociation.orgMHMTC’s 2019 Charity Coffee Morning in November (date TBA), will also be in aid of MNDA. BARRATT LONDON

PROVIDES A HOME FOR SOLITARY BEES IN MILL HILL !

Pupils from St Paul’s Church of England Primary School, Mill Hill, NW7 were presented with a bee home this month and treated to an educational talk on solitary bees, by Barratt London. Located close by to the housebuilder’s Ridgeway Views development on The Ridgeway, the school was given the opportunity to learn more about the importance of the solitary bee community, and why providing them with homes is so vital. Solitary bees have declined in recent years due to a lack of suitable habitats. The donated bee home will provide a safe place for solitary bees, which, unlike bumble bees and honeybees, do not live together in colonies. Pam Reardon, Sales and Marketing Director for Barratt East London, comments: “As a sustainable housebuilder, we are committed to protecting and nurturing nature and wildlife, and our ‘Bee Friendly’ campaign aims to help support the local environment. We were thrilled that the children enjoyed the talk from the bee expert, and hope that our donation of the bee home will inspire the pupils to think for themselves about the ways in which they can help to look after nature and the environment.” Bee expert, Steve Lings, adds: “Solitary bees are so vital to the health of our environment, for the pollination of food crops, flowers and trees and are a safe, non-aggressive bee to introduce to your garden or playground. I am so pleased that the pupils enjoyed my talk and hope they will continue to be fascinated by the bee home and its inhabitants. I truly believe that encouraging young minds to take a real interest in the importance of nature within the capital is an incredibly worthwhile initiative.” Barratt London is currently building its Ridgeway Views and Millbrook Park developments, at the heart of Mill Hill.
