THE HOT SUMMER OF 2018 MILL HILL SIZZLES IN THE HEATWAVE

Since June the area has seen a prolonged period of hot and sunny weather. The upsides of this have meant that record crowds have been attending events all over NW7 including the brilliant Summer Festival on Broadway. However, the hot weather has also led to ponds and lakes drying out in the local area notably the Darland Nature Reserve and the Angel Pond in the village. As we go to press both of these are still almost dry and wildlife is suffering. Please take care of each other and the wildlife in the heat.

MP & COUNCILLORS ATTEND SUMMER FESTIVAL

Daniel Thomas Deputy Council Leader with Cllr Golnar Bokaei & Cllr Val Duschinsky

It is sometimes said by people that we dont see our elected representatives much apart from during elections. This is not actually true - and here are some photos to prove this ! We are pleased to bring you news that not only did all our councillors come along to the Broadway Summer Festival but also the Deputy Leader of the Council and our local MP. On both days there was a good contingent and they not only visited but spent several hours in the Square talking with local residents whilst enjoying the fantastic music and refreshments. We congratulate them on their recent election win. We think it is fantastic that the community can get together like this and the community has also worked hard to oppose the Pentavia Plan for the old retail site on the A1/41 - M1 corridor. All organisations and political parties working together. The Town Square has also been a great success in the sunshine. HUGE WHATS ON and SPORTS SECTIONS Plus FEATURE ABOUT COUNCIL SERVICES

But it can look quite messy with all the litter that has been carelessly thrown about. Ugly ‘dirt spots’ build up over time and the council’s resources are too stretched tokdeal with them. So some of us Mill Hill residents get together for just one hour a month to clear the area of litter.

It’s very social and we have a lot of fun together - grabbers and bags provided! And a well-deserved cuppa after. Best of all is that we’re making a difference; incidents of littering has dramatically reduced and many of the really bad spots have remained tidy.

PLANNING - Meeting Review

PENTAVIA RETAIL PARK

MEETING DECISION BY BARNET PLANNING COMMITTEE At a meeting on Wednesday 25th July, Barnet Council’s Planning Committee refused the application to develop (17/8102/FUL) Pentavia Retail Park (stuck between the Mainline Railway/ M1 Motorway and the A1/A41 Truck roads). Roger Tichborne (of Mill Hill Music Complex fame) spoke on behalf of many local residents in opposing it. I spoke for Mill Hill Neighbourhood Forum and a copy of my full speech is available on the Mill Hill Neighbourhood Forum’s website as a “post” http://millhillforum.org.uk/uncategorized/mhnfspeech-at-lbb-planning-meeting-250718/ Mill Hill Ward Councillor Val Duschinsky gave a passionate speech in opposition and Andrew Dismore (GLA Council Member for Barnet & Camden) very professionally stated his perspective based on planning legislation, also opposing the scheme. The developer then gave his 3 minutes on how it would be a step-change for Mill Hill. Not a welcome one, I am sure every existing Mill Hill resident would agree. In the latest iteration of the scheme there are now 724 Flats, with 500 Car Park spaces (plus 40 for commercial use and for visitors) and more than 1200 Cycle spaces! The mix of “homes” is as follows:

In its “Suburban” setting of a little more than 3 hectares we could expect no more than 195 dwellings. If classified as “urban” then 300 could be possible. But the developer suggests that 724 is appropriate and this is several times in excess of the density that current planning guidelines allow.

Neighbourhood Forum COUNCIL REFUSAL REPORT

The Council’s Planning Officers recommended refusal in their report (see full report at link below) https://barnet.moderngov.co.uk/documents/s47585/Pentavia%20Retail%20Park%20NW7%202ET%20 -%20178102FUL.pdf.

GROUNDS FOR REFUSAL IN REPORT/ MEETING

The grounds for refusal were as follows: “officers consider that the scale and the height of the development is wholly inappropriate for its context. The excessive height and scale would be dominant in short, medium and long-range views and would harm the established character of the surrounding residential areas through its incongruity. The development due to its height and scale would also be visible from both nearby conservation areas and would harm the setting of both. The height and scale of the development would also be contrary to that which was envisaged within the adopted Planning Brief for the site. On balance, officers consider that the level of harm that would arise from the excessive height and scale of the development would be significant and would outweigh any of the other identified benefits arising from the scheme. Accordingly, the application is recommended for refusal.” The Committee added to the above reasons that the “Affordable Housing” offered in the scheme was not adequate. There was a long debate over the “Viability Statement” that included in its valuation the fact that the retail park has a “High Existing Use Value (EUV)”. Clearly in the current state of the retail market, this run-down site would not be attractive to any mainstream retailers and thus the viability statement is possibly flawed. When the Committee were asked to vote it was unanimous across parties that this was not the right development for Mill Hill. The Mayor of London now has the opportunity to agree with the Committee’s decision or not. We note that the developers have taken guidance from the GLA planners and if this scheme is approved it will indicate that the democracy we believe is sacrosanct in the UK is severely undermined. It is worth noting that an unprecedented number of 686 comments were received on this planning application from local residents. 682 opposed the scheme 4 supported it. The 6 Councillors from Hale & Mill Hill wards all opposed the scheme as did our local MP, Dr Matthew Offord and Andrew Dismore our GLA Member.

OUR ZOOPLA SURVEY on SUNDAY 29 JULY (from SUNDAY 24 JUNE)

Zoopla is the leading online app for Estate Agents and lists most properties available These are the flats available in areas including NW7 and the larger areas next to Mill Hill of Colindale and Edgware on Sunday 29 July. The number varies but this is a snapshot to show current availability. FLATS available to rent in NW7 140 ( in the month surveyed from 139 to 155 flats ) FLATS available to rent in Colindale 558 FLATS available to rent in Edgware 176 So clearly, we do not need 724 more adding probably 10% more people to the already rapidly growing population of Mill Hill and putting more strain on already over-stretched medical centres, schools, and roads. We have no doubt that the Pentavia Retail site, now that it has been left to deteriorate, needs to be redeveloped! Because of the many challenges of its location including extreme air quality and noise issues, which will need expensive actions to mitigate, perhaps it would be more appropriate to consider building offices and leisure facilities for the benefit of Mill Hill residents and those of surrounding areas, rather than homes for rental.

NEWS

BROADWAY OPENINGS and CLOSURES LATEST NEWS ( From www.millhillbroadway.co.uk )

THE LATEST ON OPENINGS/AVAILS ON BROADWAY There has been a lot of churn on Broadway in the last 6 months. We have seen more bank closures and some businesses close and some change hands. This is the current position (Edited on 28 July) : OPENINGS Bob's Cafe : Opened in April and has been packed out ever since. Possibly the most popular opening on Broadway since Tesco Express ( Which is still busy all day) CLOSURES Halifax : Another of the bank closures Lia's Organics : A short lived opening. Never saw it busy. The Creamery : Another short lived opening and often it was closed in any case ! Hetherington's : The former bank and buiding society is a large site with amazing windows. Hees Station Road : The popular Chinese Takeaway closed CHANGE OF HANDS World of Vape, Station Road : Has been re-opened under new management Friends Hairdressing, Station Road : Has been re-opened as Sands. NEW OPENINGS The Hees Takeaway Site: Is currently being refurbished with a new kitchen being built onto the back. Should be a takeaway and small restaurant. The work is due to finish in 45 days time so we could see a new opening in August/September. Halifax Site : British Heart Foundation shopfitters are in. Opening soon. ( See information next page ) Lia's Organics : A new cafe is promised by new owners on this site. No dates given UNDER OFFER Lloyds Site : Donino’s planning application was turned down but we hear there is another bid in. Nat West : Still empty. Was under offer but cost once again saw shop move to another empty property. The Shop : Closed last year and is under offer. HSBC : cafe nero - although we are informed they may take over another ubit on Broadway Prezzo: possible split of premises........ SHOPS AVAILABLE Hetheringtons : Advertising board now appeared. Still available...perhaps ? Leyla : Has been on the market for a year or so - owners will sell on or up to right offers. Delicatessen : Is available at £15,000 rent per year. The Creamery : Seems to be available and empty. If you know of any premises available or any new ones opening please let us know at info@millhillbroadway.co.uk or any corrections to the above as well. As you can see despite the churn The Broadway is almost at full capacity. This is brilliant considering the recent falls in High Street sales. However, we are being told by owners on the Broadway that this year business rates have gone up again and footfall has been lower. They rely on us all to keep them going. When you consider some rents are £1000 a week plus staff - stock and rates and rubbish collection ( up to £3k a year) you can see how they need regular trade just to survive let alone make a profit. Only if we work together as a community will we get these high quality businesses - we need to support themby regularly shopping in local stores.

Neighbourhood Forum

BY JOHN GILLETT

British Heart Foundation……

MHNF wrote to their Chief Executive & Commercial Director to say that with 4 existing charity shops we had enough, and an additional shop would simply dilute charitable efforts and divide the pool of volunteers more thinly. In their response they made the following comments: “Shops like ours are the ultimate community shops - all our donated stock comes from the communities we serve, the 3-4 paid jobs we create and the 40+ volunteers we normally attract will be local people and these donations are sold back to local people. We don’t believe there are many other types of retail outlets or restaurants that can replicate this level of localness.” (comment: they clearly have not done their homework on Mill Hill!) “Our shops are very popular and heavily used. If we open a shop in Mill Hill we know from our experience elsewhere that we will receive about 3000-3500 visitors every week and, even allowing for the many repeat visitors, this will account for a large proportion of the local community over the year. This will be a busy, bustling, popular shop. In order to make this happen we will need a regular supply of 4-500 bags of donated items a week, which again will all come from the community.” If they do come to Mill Hill, let’s hope that some of these claims are true, bringing more shoppers to our Town Centre, but please DO NOT leave bags outside on the High Street, to be torn apart and left around our alleyways and pavements. While we were notified that Café Nero were opening in the Old HSBC building, and indeed they had a planning application approved to make the windows on the front facia larger, we now understand that they may have changed their minds!Well we really do not need another coffee shop, but the site has been empty, now for 2 years.

NEWS NEW RUBBISH COLLECTION COMES INTO FORCE

After much hard work over the last two years by John Gillett of the Neighbourhood Forum finally Barnet Council have implemented a new collection scheme on and around Broadway.

The aim is to get rid of the wheelie bins and last Friday ( 27 July ) all the wheelie bins were collected by Barnet Council. With collections of bags only between early morning and after hours - this means that shopping and enjoying the street cafes on the Broadway will now be bin free and smell free. After years of complaints this should improve life for residents, shoppers and traders. At present the arrangements are not rolled out elsewhere in Barnet but we have set an example. https://www.thegazette.co.uk/notice/3066823

NEWS IN SHORT

THAMESLINK INTERIM TIMETABLE On 15 July an interim timetable was introduced after major problems with the new timetable. Although it has fewer trains, the new timetable has worked very well on weekdays with few cancellations. On weekends at the moment there are many engineering projects that effect the trains. Check before you go on the App or go to the live departures board link which is on the web version of www.millhillbroadway.co.uk to check the trains. The complete new timetable should be in place in the future - but no date has been given.

MILL HILL JAZZ CLUB MAKES APPEAL FOR SUPPORT Long Running Local Music Club ask locals to attend

The Mill Hill Jazz Club which takes place weekly at Mill Hill Golf Club is the only weekly professional music event in the area. For years now people have enjoyed the world class performers who have played at it. However, in recent times the audience has fallen to such an extent that with increasing costs of getting the best performers the club is struggling. In a letter posted to the Mill Hill Music Festival followers on Facebook last week the organisers appealed for local support so that the club can continue to provide the club for the area. If you have been or have never been then we suggest you look at their website and give it a try in the next month or so. If hundreds of us pull together then we can ensure that Mill Hill has a music future. From ÂŁ5/ÂŁ6 for jazz jam nights ( Next one on 29 August )

240 BUS ROUTE HAS REDUCED SERVICE ?

Deterioration of main bus route serving Edgware, Mill Hill, Golders Green Have you noticed the route is now running less buses ? Well we have and we are trying to find out the reasons for this sudden change in frequency. This is what we do know : Metroline (with the permission of TFL) has reduced the service of the 240 buses from high-frequency – about every 7 minutes to low-frequency – about every 14 minutes. This decision has been made without consultation! It has probably been made for financial reasons. Perhaps it is temporary during the School holidays? Although not built yet, a significant element of the transport plan for the new homes at the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) was the frequency of the 240-bus service. So now you just miss a bus, wait 14 minutes for the next and just miss the tube at Mill Hill East, wait there 15 minutes for the 3-minute journey to Finchley Central. You have basically travelled 2 miles on Public Transport in 32 minutes. No wonder people in the suburbs need cars ! Mr Andrew Dismore (our GLA Member) will raise this at the next Major of London’s question time and let us know the outcome.

ATTEMPTED ROBBERY AT PHONE NEW COFFEE CAFE TO OPEN ON SHOP ON BROADWAY BROADWAY On 1 August at around 9.30a.m a robbery was attempted by a man in a motorcycle helmet at The Phone Shop on Broadway. The staff gave chase and wrestled the bag of stolen phones etc off the would be robber who escaped in a car. The police attended the scene shortly afterwards. The number of robberies on Broadway has increased greatly this year. The Mill Hill Neighbourhood Forum is setting up a TRADERS NETWORK this month which will feature a SHOPWATCH scheme which is hoped will help all businesses to feel safer and make the area a no go place for would be thieves,

The LIA’s ORGANIC cafe site has been taken on and signage is now up for SIMPLE which is a cafe which will be serving coffee - sandwiches - salads - paninis and much more. We dont have an exact opening date but expect it to open in the next few days. So look out for it and call in and welcome them to the area. New businesses on Broadway need alot of trade in their first year to cover their setting up expenses, so it is important that we all call in for a coffee and a bite to eat in their early days. The support given to Bobs Cafe this year has been exceptional by the community, They have been busy every day since opening in April - if you have not been then you must check it out.

Long Barn Pinot Noir £13.95 The state of California is by far the most important producer of wine in the USA. Its grape growers succeed in many differing environments up and down the state from the fog influenced coastal valleys of Sonoma, Napa and Carneros, to the hot irrigated Central Valley and Monterey, Santa Barbera and Edna Valley on the Pacific coast and to Themecula on the Mexican boarder. Long Barn Pinot Noir is a pale ruby red in colour with a soft nose of red cherries. On the palate, notes of bramble fruit and cherries combine with a subtle sweet spice character and a fresh acidity. Well structured with soft tannins and a silky mouthfeel, the fresh fruit flavours linger on the palate .Enjoy alongside roasted chicken or pork. At £13.95 we were blown away by the quality of wine you get for the reasonably modest price!

Millway's Health Fair and Supporters Group AGM

Barnet Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG)

The Millway Practice Supporters Group (MPSG) AGM is on the 13th September 2018. Please put this date in your diary. This year we are planning to combine the AGM with a Health Fair starting from 4pm with AGM to start at 6.30pm. To make this event more useful we are hoping to invite a guest speaker to give a short talk on self- help/social prescribing. We are working with Age UK, Asthma UK, Barnet Wellbeing Hub, Diabetes UK, Dementia UK, the Good Neighbourhood and NW7 Hub. We will also be promoting Prostate awareness and seasonal vaccinations to make this event beneficial for the entire community. We are looking for local sponsors who could help us to run a stall with refreshments for those that attend this 3 .5 hour session. The AGM will start at 6.30pm with the usual agenda. In addition we are hoping to set up a virtual PPG, utilising our new website which is due to be launched in September.

As I am sure you are aware from all the publicity, the NHS reaches 70 this July 5th.

Millway Medical Practice – Digital WebWe are working with a software developer to upgrade our website which should revolutionise the way you access various services. The main purpose of this change is to improve the digital access to most of the services for which patients currently either visit the practice or phone the surgery. The aim of the change is to:  enable patients to have quick access without the need to contact the surgery  reduce the need to call the practice and the number of calls coming in to reception  increase the doctor time available to treat complex and frail patients  enable patients to take care of themselves by accessing helpful information The layout will be in line with the latest format promoted by the designer who has worked with a number of patient workshops to shape it in order for it to be user-friendly. Patients will be able to access the following by making a few clicks:  emergency appointments  clinics for long term conditions  preventive health care  life style advice (e.g. - smoking )

It is a wonderful institution and took away the dread that many people felt about they and their family being ill before 1948. I am thrilled that there is extra funding going into the NHS. However the extra money will not cover the exciting new innovations and the changing demographics of an aging population. We also want to treat patients with mental ill-health equally with physical health (Parity of Esteem) as well as meeting the needs of the under 5s. It also doesn’t cover Public Health and the all-important prevention agenda. I was lucky to be at the NHS Confederation Conference 2 weeks ago and heard Jeremy Hunt and Simon Stephens (head of NHSE) speaking amongst others. But the most striking image was of a painting by Lowry – ‘Ancoats’ Hospital Outpatients Hall’ from 1952. The only difference with outpatients today is the fact that everyone is wearing a hat and the seating looks old fashioned…but may be more comfortable! But what is the same is NHS money being spent for patients to be waiting for appointments – many of them follow ups - rather than getting on with their lives. And doctors and nurses being in outpatients rather than treating the patients where they can make a real difference. Even more importantly those that need to be seen should be seen quicker and given more time. We have some new services that will help; clinical advice and guidance (GPs getting an opinion from a specialist without the need to be referred), tele dermatology (sending a photo of the skin problem to a specialist for advice) and more of the type of pathways such as the urology ones developed by our Dr Dattani with hospital specialists. But the onus is also on patients; ask the GP whether advice can be sought rather than a referral, which would be quicker as well. Alternatively ask for an ‘open appointment’ so that you can be referred back at a later date if you need to be. Finally ask whether a phone call or email might suffice for a result. Let’s hope for a healthier NHS at 80! Dr Debbie Frost—Chair of Barnet CCG

We are hoping to complete this project by the end of September with the members of the MPSG in finalising our web design. It is also our intention to enable patients to access MPSG related information and to track their activities. Similarly, we are also hoping to provide information for “Self-Care”. As promised we are keeping you informed of our thoughts and will keep you updated as things develop. Were you born after 2nd September 1942? Or will you be celebrating your 70th Birthday before or on 5th July 2018? If so come and have your free Shingles vaccination between 11am -4pm on the 5th July 2018 (no appointment required) and join us for some birthday cake to celebrate you and the NHS turning 70. Check your eligibility here !

Help us celebrate the 70th birthday of the NHS! The National Health Service is turning 70 on 5 July 2018. It’s the perfect opportunity to celebrate the achievements of one of the nation’s most loved institutions. Come and join us for a cuppa, a slice of cake and a natter (for a small donation) on Thursday 5th July 2018 from 11am-4pm to celebrate the NHS’ 70th Birthday and to help raise money for local NHS Hospitals.

FEATURE |OPTION THREE | The Big Council Deba WHY WE NEED TO CHANGE THE WAY THE COUNCIL RUNS THEIR SERVICES The Background

Last week, Barnet Council had a meeting of its policy and resources committee, looking to decide who will be running the majority of council services for the next five years. At present, the council has two major contracts with Capita PLC, providing everything from IT, call centres, planning, to procurement and a whole host of other services. The total net worth of these contracts is over a billion pounds. The contracts were signed five years ago, so there is currently a contract review process underway.

The Options

The council has put three options on the table. These are 1) Carry on as we are, 2) Take some in house or retender them, leaving key services in the hands of Capita or 3) Serve notice on Capita that all services are being brought back in house.

To Outsource or Not ?

The key question should always be “what provides the best services, at the best price, for local residents”. There is no reason that outsourcing should be a dirty word, there are many services that it makes sense to let private sector contractors provide (you wouldn’t want Barnet Council running its own telephone exchanges for instance) and sometimes there are economies of scale to be had by working with other local authorities. The issue that many people have had with the Capita contract is that it has replaced a monolithic public sector organisation with a monolithic private sector one.

The Current Capita Contract

Furthermore, by putting Capita in charge of purchasing and planning, democratic control of how the council conducts its business and manages change in our towns has been seriously undermined. A mechanism called “Gainshare” is in place, where Capita get 30% of any savings on contracts, even if they have no role in the negotiations. One such example was when they billed for 30% of savings on a London wide energy contract, negotiated by a consortium of London Councils. Like most Barnet residents, I believe that all of such savings should be put back into running services or keeping council tax low. The contracts with Capita allow generous provisions for “extras”. These items are out of scope of the services defined in the original contract. These jobs are where Capita are making all of their money. Previously, the Council employed staff to do it, but now we pay consultant day rates, which in some cases cost in one month what the council was previously paying staff in a year. When all of the Gainshare payments, extra’s and other costs are added up, the savings envisaged in the original contracts are completely gobbled up.

ate by Roger Tichborne

http://barneteye.blogspot.com/

Another justification for the deal was that Capita would invest in cutting edge systems to run the councils business, but it has turned out that the Council has had to pay up front for these. Sadly, these new systems have not resulted in better management information. Last year the Council’s general audit was late due to poor quality data from Capita. This year, the Council pension fund audit has been held up for the same reason. Capita have had five years to get this right. It isn’t working. Barnet Council officers recommended Option 2, at a recent meeting of the Policy and Resources committee, but councillors have asked for a proper business case for all three options.

My Conclusions My view is that the council should adopt option 3. I would not exclude Capita from rebidding to run services, on terms that are better for Barnet, but I would immediately end the gainshare payments and bring planning back in house. I also believe that the business case for each option should be independently produced. Council officers are too close to Capita to be objective. It is worth noting that Capita told its own shareholders that Barnet Council had “mismanaged the contract” at its AGM. As a council tax payer and a business rates payer, this ultimately means I’ve been paying too much tax and getting poor services. That is why I want to see an organisation that can be managed replacing the current failed One Barnet outsourcing scheme. We welcome Roger Tichborne for his first article for MH Today. Roger is well known in the local area and owns the highly successful Mill Hill Music Complex on Bunns Lane. He has recently stood as a Liberal Councillor gaining a very large vote and is committed to helping the community. Roger writes his BARNET EYE blog which is Barnet’s most read internet site with over 2.5 million reads since 2009 covering politics, local issues and fun in the London Borough of Barnet. The Guardian newspaper made the blog one of its must read blogs. Roger will raise issues for us to discuss on his blog - or on Inside Mill Hill or Mill Hill Families or on Twitter. Supported by local businesses, community volunteers and friendly residents, it is a mine of useful information and has nearly 7000 members. The page was created in 2014 to connect as many of our 18,000 residents as possible; offering a forum to post or promote anything of local interest. It is constantly evolving with new members and initiatives. The group, through the demographic of its members, presents the rich history of Mill Hill which has lead to its vibrancy today. Sepia photos of yesteryear’s Broadway nestle against the newest cafe or creation. What the creator of the Mill Hill Families Facebook Group is most proud of is that some local businesses have asked to sponsor the banner: in the true spirit of the page, to support local businesses and residents, that money has been donated to local charities, including NW7hub.

MONTHLY FEATURE |Working on Broadway Have you ever wondered when you buy your coffee in one of the great coffee cafes on the Broadway what it is like to work in one ? Unfiltered News: Alcoholic/Coffee Anonymous

By Niamh

It’s difficult to express a love for coffee without sounding like a drug addict; which is because the people who consume it on a daily basis are, simply, addicted. I picture our first customers rolling out of the wrong side of bed every morning and stumbling into the cafe to receive their shot. They might as well shout ‘hit me’ over the counter but they don’t need to; groggy actions speak louder than words. When I picture our first customers as addicts, I understand why drinkers: demand to be let in fifteen minutes before opening when in any other industry they’d accept the wait outside, ask for ‘another one’ over a queue of customers and announce ‘my usual’ as they hand you pre-counted change. The world of coffee is stumbled upon at different ages. It’s found at university, during midlife crisis’ and when hot drink machines show up at work. For some of these people, the real world becomes second to the world of coffee. For others, the world of coffee never exists further than instant coffee. They can see platform 9 ¾ but haven’t been instructed to run into the brick wall. Maybe they’re the lucky ones. Maybe they’re in Eden. Not for long; first lesson in Hogwarts, demystifying spells. Having eight different drinks, written in a foreign language, with no explanation regarding their differences should be a crime. The questions you need answered are; How many shots? How much milk? How much froth? The number of shots is simple; slight increase in activity, 2- jumpstart setting, 3/4- superhero setting. The drier your coffee, the more froth your coffee has. The wetter, the more milky it is. Latte- lots of milk (wet) Cappuccino- lots of froth (dry) Flat white- two shots with wet milk in small cup Double macchiato- two shots a little froth in small cup Cortado- somewhere in between a Flat White and a Double Macchiato Espresso- a shot of coffee, no milk Americano- coffee shot with water Long black- stronger Americano This is the list in its simplest form. It’s hardly the Tree of Knowledge but it’s a start. Niamh

FEATURE |IT SECURITY

Mark Warren from InsideMill Hill

One of the biggest problems of cybersecurity is the constantly evolving nature of security risks. The traditional approach has been to focus resources on the system components but this has now changed, it is now up to the individual to carry out basic preventative measures, the basics of which I have listed below

Take a Close Look at Your Passwords The easiest, and most basic cyber security tip? Use strong passwords, a strong password should contain at least one number, one uppercase letter, one lowercase letter and one special symbol. The longer and more random the password, the harder it will be to crack. Are you using different passwords for each account? Using the same passwords for multiple accounts is always a danger – it’s just a matter of time before your accounts become compromised. Do you change your passwords often enough? You should change your passwords minimum once a year, and immediately any time a website has experienced any sort of data breach. If you have trouble remembering all your different passwords, start using a password manager.

Look What’s Happening with Your Computer You probably don’t realize it, but over time, there are several programs running in the background on your computer. Most are harmless – however, some of them might be malicious. So, it’s always a good idea to occasionally check to see what’s running. To do this, use Task Manager in Windows or Activity Monitor for Mac. If you don’t recognize a program, search for it on the internet. That should tell you what it is and if it’s something that you need to be concerned about.

Examine Your Wi-Fi Connection How often do you check your Wi-Fi connection? Have you changed the default password on your router? Is your WiFi password protected? Are you using WPA encryption? Is anyone accessing your Wi-Fi without you knowing You can check by checking your routers settings or install Wireless Network Watcher. You should be especially aware when you are on public Wi-Fi. Anytime you use public Wi-Fi, you should always use a virtual private network software (VPN) for the safest browsing experience. (this encrypts your data to stop unwanted access)

Look at Any Connected Apps You have probably given your social media account and in some cases your account permission to connect to other apps. Though these aren’t totally dangerous, they can and sometimes do result in data leaks or account takeovers. If you don’t use a connected app/service, you should remove the connection.

Update Regularly Make sure you are updating your operating system and apps regularly. These updates often have security improvements to keep your device safe. The newer the update, the safer your system is. Don’t forget to update things like browsers, router firmware and even printer software, as hackers can manipulate those, too.

at THE HUB LAUNCHES REVIEW COMEDY CLUBREVIEW MILL HILL COMEDY CLUB NW7 HUB, HARTLEY AVENUE NW7 MONDAY 2 JULY 2018 ADA CAMP and HER SNAKE ! ( ADA CAMP and HER PSYCHIC DUCK ) LEAVE MILL HILL LAUGHING OUT LOUD ! It was one of those hot summer nights where you wanted to be in the company of an air conditioner but we decided to attend the new Comedy Club at the NW7hub. The evening was billed as an Edinburgh Preview show and on entry we were greeted with an invitation for our free drink - and very generous it was as well. The opening evening had been around a third full but on this sunny Monday a good crowd soon built up and the venue was over half full for this new venture. Therefore, it seems that Comedy has a good audience here in Mill Hill. First onto the stage was our host for the evening, RACHEL CREEGER who described herself as a Jewish comic but that she had no similarities with Miriam Margoyles ! Her introductory set was full of very funny observations about being Jewish in a comedy genre. Even a misbehaving microphone could not stop her warmth entertaining the audience who seemed to greatly enjoy her set. Following on was Irish comedian CHRISTIAN TALBOT. His accent alone made his stories about life and depression easy on the ear. His 15 minutes of fame in the media were brilliantly described and accompanied by a TV News video to show us the crazy way in which the media present stories. Certainly an accomplished story teller and very funny. A short interval saw our refreshments topped up from the well stocked cafe and the venue was really buzzing after two excellent acts. The final act was in ADA CAMP. She arrived on stage dressed as a variety artist - from the great days of variety. Visually she was superb from the moment she walked onto the stage. She then went into her act describing how she started as a Strawberry - her first love Arthur - and eventually how she became a variety artist. All was done in an almost pantomime way - involving the audience in the act - and drawing tears and howls of laughter from the audience who were literally rolling around in their seats. Her SNAKE was one of the stars of the show but no spoilers - you need to come and see her show. It was - as they say - comedy gold. ADA CAMP is one of the best characters in comedy I have ever seen live. The audience all seemed to agree and cheered her to the rafters at the end of her set. However, she did not complete the full story because this was after all a preview.....so I do hope there will be a chance to see the full set in Mill Hill at a future date - and I would say get a ticket and get there because you will love it. Finally we were treated to our host RACHEL CREEGER who completed the evening with a short and told the audience that she hoped that the comedy club would be a regular event at the NW7hub alongside her very popular night at the Adam and Eve pub on the Ridgeway. We have no dates yet for the next Comedy Club but will let you know as soon as we find out.

FIDDLER ON THE ROOFNEWS CASTING NEWS FROM MILL HILL MUSICAL THEATRE COMPANY FROM MILL HILL MUSICAL THEATRE COMPANY Farhat ByBy Farhat DarDar

MHMTC FIDDLERS ON WHILE MILL HILL BURNS IN THE HEATWAVE By Farhat Dar Although schools have broken up and families have headed off on their summer holidays, dedicated MHMTC members have been soldiering on through the sweltering conditions to polish up scenes for their October production of Fiddler On The Roof in the fantastic Green Room of Hartley Hall. And director David Coleman is unstinting in putting us through our paces, while MD Derek Holland is paying close attention that we continue hitting the right notes while learning stage movement and Gemma Tate’s great choreography. Here are some of photos of our endeavours. The Fiddler On The Roof box office opens on 1 September for the general public, and there’s a great Early Bird offer available throughout September for our Wednesday 24 October (7.30pm), Thursday 25 October (7.30pm) and matinee (Saturday 27 October at 2.30pm) performances, of £10 per ticket. After that, tickets will cost £13.50. Tickets for our Gala Night performances on Friday 26 and Saturday 27 October at 7.30pm – which includes a light supper being served during the interval – are priced at £15. Tickets for under 16s are £9. Please visit www.ticketsource.co.uk/MHMTC (booking fee applies), or email the box office with ticket orders at boxoffice@mhmtc.co.uk. We’d like to thank Mill Hillians for their continued support, and hope to see as many of you in the audience as possible.

COUNTDOWN TO QUIZ NIGHT By Farhat Dar It’s not that long ago since our last one, but yes there’s another MHMTC Quiz Night in the offing in Mill Hill, as the second of our two annual Quiz Nights fast approaches. I’m busy compiling the questions, and I can promise a reasonably challenging set of head-scratchers for all you quizzers out there. Please put Saturday 22 September in your diaries, and as usual it will take place in brilliant Trinity Church, 100 The Broadway, Mill Hill, from 7.30pm. Tickets cost £12.50, included in which is a scrummy fish and chips supper. What’s not

OUR TREBLE WINNERS ! After winning the Premier League Title at Twickenham at the end of the season, you may have thought that was it for now. However, the 7s Tournament was held at Franklin Gardens in Northaampton on 28 and 29 July........and once again our fantastic Saracens players won the title. Of course if you have not forgotten - the brilliant Women’s team also won the Premier League for Saracens meaning that in fact it is a treble this summer.

From Saracens.com “Saracens lifted the 2018 Premiership Rugby 7s trophy with an impressive 33-12 victory over holders Wasps at Franklin’s Gardens. It is the second time the Men in Black have claimed the tournament crown having previously won the 2010 competition. After an opening round to defeat to Newcastle Falcons in the pool stage, Sarries secured their place in the cup quarter-finals with a 26-14 victory against Leicester Tigers. A tense affair with Exeter Chiefs followed – Matt Gallagher’s last-gasp try forcing the contest into extra time before Sean Reffell’s golden-point score sending Mike Hynard’s side into the last four. Saracens booked their place in the final with an entertaining win over London rivals Harlequins, setting up a mouth-watering encounter versus back-to-back sevens winners Wasps. “ Captain Joel Conlon led the way with two tries either side of Sunni Jardine dotting down for the Coventry-based outfit. Sarries stretched their lead when Tom Griffiths broke through to dab down, then Rotimi Segun and Miteli Vulikijapani continued the Wolfpack’s momentum to knock Wasps off their perch despite a Callum Sirker consolation.

SPORT

Sport at Mill Hill Village We are already two thirds of the way through the Cricket season. The wonderful Summer we have been enjoying has ensured some fine and dry pitches to play on. In fact, the challenge has been keeping the pitches watered enough to stop them crumbing altogether. All the three Adult teams have enjoyed mixed success. The 1s and 2nd XI are both in the top of the half of the table but promotion looks unlikely without going unbeaten for the rest of the season. The 3rd XI have struggled, due to poor availability on a couple of occasions but are nevertheless competing well and brining on some youngsters through the ranks. Sunday cricket alternates between Cup fixtures and Development XI friendly fixtures, offering everyone the opportunity to get involved, whatever their standard.

The Village Sports Camp Mill Hill Village Sports Club are very proud to host the excellent Village Sports Camp. The camp’s aim is to provide children aged 4-14 with high quality coaching from experienced specialist coaches, while remaining fun and safe with a family/community feel. The first week has already gone and hundreds of children went home happy every evening with big smiles on their faces. There are two more weeks of delivery, Monday 6th - Friday 10th August & Monday 20th Friday 24th August and there are a handful of spaces available for each week. So, if you are looking for something to do with your kids, then check out the following website. The camp offers incredibly good value and a fantastic setting for the kids to enjoy the outdoors. https://www. thevillagesportscamp.com/ Junior Cricket is largely done and dusted for the year. All age group sides equipped themselves admirably and achieved successes along the way. As part of our 150th Anniversary celebrations, 20 of our Junior cricketers will be taking the field at the home of Cricket, Lords this Thursday. They will be providing the ‘guard of honour’ as the teams from Middlesex and Sussex take the field in advance of the T20 Blast match between the two sides. It should be quite an experience for the youngsters to be out in from of a 20,000+ strong crowd and in front of the Sky TV cameras as well. We wish them all well. As far as football is concerned, the new season is only just around the corner. Pre-season training is already underway and will continue every Wednesday evening until the season starts again in September. If you are interested in joining us for pre-season training, please feel free to get in touch via the club email millhillvillagesportsclub@yahoo.co.uk.

MILL HILL VILLAGE SPORTS CLUB Events at Mill Hill Village Sports Club Mill Hill Village Sports Club are 150 years old this year. This Anniversary was celebrated in great style at the Club’s recent hugely successful Summer Ball. Attended by several hundred Members and friends, including the Mayor of Barnet, guests were treated to a sumptuous Indian Banquet, courtesy of the Searock restaurant in North Finchley. Fantastic live music came from The Soul Enforcement Bureau, who ensured the dance floor was full all night long. The Club were also delighted to welcome former England and Middlesex cricketer, Clive Radley MBE as guest speaker and he gave an excellent speech, culminating in congratulations to the Club for its longevity and success. The Grand prize draw, silent auction and themed cocktails were all a big success and huge thanks are due to the key sponsors of the event and prizes, Meadow Residential, 4Com and Magrath Sheldrick LLP. The event went on late into the night and all who attended agreed it was a wonderful occasion befitting such a momentous anniversary and achievement. Here’s to the next 150 years!

Fundraising at Mill Hill Village Sports Club We are making excellent progress towards our £2000 fundraising target in aid of our Charity partner, Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice. One of our Members raised a considerable amount of sponsorship in the recent Rainbow Run organised by the Charity and another member is taking on a half marathon challenge in September. Further events are planned in the back end of the year to ensure we meet and surpass our target. Feel free to get in touch if you or your Children would like to get involved with the Club in any way. MILL HILL RUGBY CLUB Celebrating 80 Years

Club News: The season ahead:

With pre-season in full swing we’re soon to be into the 2018/19 season! Our fixtures have been released and we would like to use the opportunity to remind everybody in Mill Hill and the wider community that all are welcome in the club whenever we’re open, even if it’s not too watch us but just to watch the professionals on TV. Just as it has been the past 5 years, whenever Saracens are at home, we are open and all are welcome to join in the fun. There’ll be lots of events happening over the next year so watch this space! What’s been happening in the break? More honours! Ed Wade & Joey Healy did the club very proud at the houses of parliament for the premiership community awards ceremony which Ed Wade bagged runner up for his work with our Project Rugby side, an inclusive rugby side which we run with the Saracens Sport Foundation & Barnet Mencap. ( PHOTO BELOW) A Tough Mudder challenge! Two club props, Joey Healy & John Gilbert ran the full tough mudder to raise money for a new kit for our project rugby side, as they’ll be continuing to play at tournaments at top flight rugby stadiums having already done so at Saracens and London Irish. We’re incredible proud of the duo and excited to see the new kit in action! Restoration works – A lick of paint here, a few new windows there and much more! Over the summer and in time for the new season we’ve been improving our facilities for a better experience for all visiting – we won’t tell you everything so you’ll have to come and see for yourself! We hope to grow the Mill Hill Rugby Family this year with our Men’s sides, new Ladies team, Mixed Touch rugby (over 50’s ish! – youngun’s are welcome too!) and our ProjectRugby inclusive side but you don’t have to play to be a part of it! We are a community club open to all and when Mill Hill comes calling we will answer!
