COPTHALL SCHOOL DANCERS AT SADLERS WELLS Sixteen talented dancers from Year 8, 9 and 10 from Copthall School , here in Mill Hill are involved in this year’s English National Ballet’s Dance Journeys. They have been working with a professional choreographer all term as well as attending weekend rehearsals at the English National Ballet’s Markova House in central London. Their performance is in April at Sadler’s Wells Theatre. We wish them well in the final preparations for this exciting project. The annual flagship project Dance Journeys unites young people from west Londonsecondary schools, and musicians from the Royal College of Music Junior Department, through an ambitious, large-scale performance at Sadler’s Wells. 2019’s Dance Journeys is inspired by English National Ballet’s triple bill She Persisted, celebrating female agility, strength and imagination through creative research and performance. Fifty students from Friern Barnet School and Copthall School have been invited to join the Dance Journeys Company, and work alongside ENB YouthCo for a 12-week rehearsal period leading to the creation of a new work Uncharted, which explores female pioneers, unstoppable sailors, courageous mountaineers, tenacious astronauts and imaginative writers. Uncharted‘s captivating score is composed by Aleksandra Vrebalov and recorded by a 70 piece orchestra, made up of talented young musicians from Royal College of Music Junior Department.

The sun has been out over the past few weeks and much has been happening. Congratulations to Mill Hill Rugby Club on their much deserved promotion. Good luck to Mill HIll Bowling Club with their 100th season which starts this month. On the Broadway there is much work taking place. Pizza Hut has reopened after a refurbishment and Domino’s opens a flagship takeaway with restaurant seating in the old Lloyds and both of these look fantastic. Cooksleys is being converted into an upcycling store - Jenny’s into a Cafe/Deli and on April 23 we believe Leyla’s closes to be replaced by an Italian restaurant. This year will have seen more new openings than any other year this century. Showing the vibrancy in our Town Centre and the desire of businesses to base themselves in our lovely area. The Pentavia exhibition has been. Local residents are rightly concerned with this large development without the infrastructure to support this huge increase in population. We await the Mayor of London and his views. From this month we welcome our elected representatives to a new DIARY section where they will report on their activities to keep you in the loop about local decision making. Thank you for making March the most read edition since we started (5k reads - 200K page views) that is amazing for us. Published by : AMG via ISSUU The Broadway

The NW7hub in Mill Hill Library is the proud new owner of a vibrant and modern mural created by students from Copthall School. The mural, unveiled by Barnet Councillor and former Mayor, Lisa Rutter, was created by 36 talented Copthall students aged 11 to 15 and depicts in vivid colours familiar Mill Hill landmarks and the diverse Mill Hill community. The mural is divided into 6 large panels and mixed groups of six students painted each panel. www.copthallschool.org.uk/238/news-events/post/672/copthall-art-mural-on-display-in-the-nw7-hub-mill-hill Copthall’s Curriculum Leader for Art, Nicky Graves, said, “Copthall School was excited to be commissioned to create this artwork for the NW7hub and delighted to support its important community work. It was a big undertaking for the Art department but the students worked incredibly hard to produce the mural and I am extremely proud of the exciting and vibrant piece of work that they have created. The mural showcases Copthall’s student’s creative talents as well as its strong legacy of excellence in Art.” Adam Morley, Trustee of the NW7 Hub, said, “We are thrilled with the mural, which helps to create a colourful and upbeat atmosphere in our community facility. We are delivering a range of activities and services in the NW7hub to enhance the local area, and the mural will bring a smile to the faces of local community members using those services.” Copthall School, a girls’ comprehensive school in Mill Hill recently placed in the top 3% nationally for progress, has a strong history in the wider community and is proud to be both situated in the heart of Mill Hill as well as part of the Mill Hill Community, hosting events for local primary schools, and other activities and clubs onsite most evenings and weekends. www.copthallschool.org.uk Copthall School received praise from Ofsted in May 2018, recognised for the rapid transformation and excellent progress of students, awarded their Good rating and pupils have achieved outstanding GCSE and A-level results for a second consecutive year in 2018, with 31% of all GCSE grades awarded 7-9 / A-A* which is 10.5% higher than national average. ARTS | NEWS | FEATURES | COMMUNITY NEWS | FORUM NEWS THE BROADWAY LATEST | John Gillett Neighbourhood Forum We now know that Leyla is closing and that a new lease has been signed for a great addition to The Broadway – Watch this space. “My Living Room” have moved at the end of their lease on No 71 the Broadway, and new tenants are already in fitting out the store for their new business. You can still contact My Living Room at studio@mylivingroom. com See also their store at The Living Room, 16 Curzon Street, London W1J 5HP Jenny’s is shortly to re-open as “Mani & Nick’s”. The old HSBC building has been vacant now for over 3 years. “Dirty Burger & the Chicken Shop” (part of the Soho House Restaurant chain) were going to open, but having spent many thousands on planning and other preparations made the decision not to open in Mill Hill and 3 other locations they had been preparing. Then Café Nero were coming and received planning permissions for changes to the front façade – but now they are not going to open – well we surely have the right mix of coffee shops anyway – The site is again under offer, we understand and if these negotiations fail another investor is waiting in the wings – so hopefully we will have more good news SOON. It would be great to see investors taking on the vacant shops in the Broadway at 121A (Statons Estate Agents- are you really opening “Shortly” after nearly 2 years under “wraps”), 115 (was the “Shop” – Convenience store), 117a (was Princess Daisy) 77-79 (was Chinese Medicine & is it 10 years since a card shop operated there?) 55 (was Nat West) 45a (was the Creamery) 60 (was Sorbet), 4 (was Zushi) No 12 -was Cooksley’s Butchers-now let & opening in May No 8-10 -was Hetheringtons Estate Agency, believed to be new site for Hair on Broadway, but this could be a rumour? If correct it would leave No 16 vacant – any takers? In any event, you would have to acknowledge that the Broadway is improving, and as it improves more will want to be amongst us! We commend Pizza Hut on their refurbishment. The new signage, counter space etc is a big improvement.

THE END OF HANGING BASKETS ON THE BROADWAY Mill Hill Neighbourhood Forum has decided NOT to provide hanging baskets in the Broadway this year. We do have the flower stands (which would cost over £1000 each to install today) but frankly without volunteers who are prepared to water the hanging baskets daily, it is not possible for us to do this again.

This is an example of what a hanging basket should look like (from Westminster). Ours have never looked as good, over the last 3 years we have supplied them, largely because of the need for watering. Of course, if shop owners along the Broadway want to really “OWN” the flower stand outside their premises (or share with a neighbouring shop) and they can commit to the frequent and regular watering, then we will co-ordinate the effort of acquiring suitable displays. It would be nice if they were all reasonably uniform.

The High Street needs to attract more people and Hanging Baskets done properly can greatly improve the look and feel.

So over to you now to engage and help us improve Mill Hill.

STEP-FREE-ACCESS (SFA]

We eagerly await the decision on the application for "Access for All" funding for Step-Free-Access at Mill Hill Broadway. At a debate initiated by Dr Offord MP in Parliament, Nusrat Ghani MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary for Transport could only comment to the effect that the application had been well received, but the new £300million in funding will be allocated by priority need and geographical coverage. They received 300 applications and their evaluation will be announced in April 2019. The debate on 27th March in Westminster Hall, hopefully will have helped to explain the very real need for Step-Free-Access at Mill Hill Broadway station for the benefit of not only those with disabilities, but families with young children and those travelling with baggage.

See link to the video of the debate https://www.facebook.com/matthewofford4hendon/videos/833724950319807/?t=0 See also the related coverage in the Jewish Chronicle of the “wholly avoidable” death of Edgware resident Priscilla Tropp https://www.thejc.com/news/uk-news/cancer-patient-death-after-fall-at-mill-hill-broadway-station-was-wholly-avoidable-1.482170?fbclid=IwAR1Ifn4gOM0y0Lujldp2W6ezmMrXmvxGwTMER2slPuR01XCWfFabbnFq-C8 The debate on 27th March was reported in HANSARD and the text can be viewed at the link below: https://hansard.parliament.uk/Commons/2019-03-27/debates/C74DFBF4-95B1-4061-B3F1-B874B7F33F9E/RailwayStationsAccessibility

With funding for “Step-Free-Access” we can look forward to the redevelopment of the whole Broadway station site, to make it fit for purpose and to bring other, much needed new amenities, to our Town Centre to help it thrive as a favourite North West destination and transport hub for NW7 and surrounding areas.

Improving Mill Hill | From Our Local Councillors The Hendon Area Committee in Barnet Council is given its own annual budget and councillors from each of the seven wards in the constituency are represented. We are able to suggest items for approval by the committee, usually items that have been raised by our residents that would benefit the community. Some of the items that the Mill Hill councillors have requested and been approved are concerned with road safety improvement. An example is the recently completed pavement build-out opposite Hartley Hall to make a shorter and safer crossing there.

Another item approved includes funding for a consultation to look at traffic and speeding in Millway and in particular the parking and safety at the junction of Millway and the Broadway.

And yet another consultation asked for by our residents has now been funded and will be taking place shortly to get views on the parking in the Poet’s Corner area including the Daws Lane car park. We can also ask for grants for community projects and we were pleased to work with the Friends of Mill Hill Park to get the funds for an all-weather table tennis table which will be placed between the adult gym equipment and the playground and offer an activity for our older children to enjoy. And we have supplied the Mill Hill Neighbourhood Forum with a grant for a notice board for the Town Square so that all our residents can easily find information about all the markets, events and community activities that Mill Hill has to offer. High Streets nationally are having a hard time. High Streets operators can complain about the impact, of the recession, of on-line shopping, higher rents & rates, lack of parking etc. On the plus side consumer behaviour is changing and people are shopping in local stores for food more frequently, perhaps to save on wastage or to “top-up” a shop done on-line or at an out of town retail store. Home delivery, which has become more popular recently will increase as people value their leisure time more and reduce their dependency on private cars in favour of walking, cycling or using public transport as we are told we have to do! Consumers are becoming more discerning too and, in many cases, where a purchase is not for a recognisable, generally available, product code, they want to see and touch before they buy. The move to organic products and to vegetarian or vegan tastes, again fuels this move back towards local stores. People expect friendly added value service not just lowest price. A shop that can genuinely and professionally advise and guide consumer selection (without being overtly pushy) will do well and will develop loyal customers who return to buy more. If you genuinely “add-value” with a smile, then the customer experience will be popular. If not, there are plenty of other places to shop. And the same is true for restaurants; even more so when social media can be used to review the experience and people are more likely to be negative than give a positive comment. The trend then, back to shopping locally, and an increase in people’s desire to eat out, are both good for High Streets that have a balanced quality offering. Spending on food and drink typically accounts for more than 50% of total leisure spending, compared to around 15% on ‘cultural services’ (e.g. going to the cinema, theatre, art galleries or live music) and under 10% on hotels, ‘games of chance’ and recreation/ sporting services. There is scope for town centres to capitalise on this trend, redefining their function as leisure ‘destinations’ in their own right. The development of a strong commercial leisure offer can help to increase footfall, particularly outside of retail hours, and visitors undertaking ‘linked trips’ between retail, leisure and other uses also spend increased dwell-time in centres. Markets are a key generator of footfall as well as a known attractor to centres. We are trying with the support of our Councillors to create the “Mill Hill Businesses Network”, to encourage co-ordinated development of Mill Hill‘s commercial activities, towards a more sustainable future for all, and to ensure that are able to buy locally. This is a new MHNF initiative and we trust it will receive widespread support as we move towards 2020 when the Broadway will be 100 years young. ARTS | NEWS | FEATURES | COMMUNITY NEWS | FORUM NEWS REVIEW ROMEO AND JULIET ROYAL OPERA HOUSE ROYAL BALLET The opening night of Romeo and Juliet was 43 years since its first performance by the Royal Ballet of this McMillan ballet which for many ballet fans including myself is our favourite ballet. It did not disappoint with Lauren Cuthbertson and Matthew Ball in the main roles dancing superbly. The sets - costumes - music and the whole story tugs at the heartstrings and makes for the most beautiful night out in the theatre. The run still has tickets left - but we reccomend going to TRAFALGAR SQ on June 11 for free to see it on the big screens ! That will be a fantastic way to watch this excellent ballet fro more information www.roh.org.uk

ARTS | NEWS | FEATURES | COMMUNITY NEWS | FORUM NEWS St Michael's church is one of the best venues for intimate choral concerts. With its very high wooden ceilings and rectangular shape it provides an excellent acoustic meaning that the audience of around 200 can hear and see perfectly. So I was looking forward to this programme of Sacred Music in a Church setting. It did not disappoint.

LONDON PRO ARTE CHOIR | Concert Review Mendelssohn etc | SAT 23 MARCH 2019

The opening piece Hear My Prayer by Mendelssohn is very well known. The solo Oh For the Wings of a Dove was a best selling recording last century - selling in the millions. Although in this century it is rarer to hear it. The soprano soloist Louisa Kataria started the evening with a soaring version and the Pro Arte Choir, enjoying their role, supported her superbly. It really set the tone for an evening of beautiful Sacred music. The other pieces in the first half included two by Bruckner including the much sung Locus Iste which is a short and lovely introit. It finished with the complex Ascribe unto the Lord by Wesley. This was sung with great commitment and the tenors and basses leading the sopranos/altos were directed by Tom Winpenny who kept it moving along nicely to its huge conclusion. The interval at these concerts has become legend. Drinks are served in the church as you would expect but there is the famous Produce Stall which we were told prior to the Concert ( in the welcome by the Church's vicar) actually makes the most desirable seating next to it so that concert goers can get in first at the stall ! By the time I can get near they are usually sold out! After the interval we all settled down to hear a beautiful 30 minute setting of Aquinas's text Lauda Sion. Written to illuminate the doctrine of transubstantiation. Not often performed in concerts and so it was a real treat to hear this. The choir are now producing a very rounded sound. It suited this piece with its mellow tones. So whenever the choir sang it was easy to feel the ritual elements of the music. The soloists were all very young which has become a trademark of these concerts. The Pro Arte choir is to be congratulated on this - giving emerging singers a chance to show their great skills in concert performances is brilliant. As an audience we could be seeing stars of the future and certainly the quality was very high. The soprano soloist Louisa Kataria from the first half returned and had the majority of the solos in this second half. At only about 18 years old she has a clarity of a young Lucy Crowe and if she continues to add depth and power to her voice she is certainly a singer to watch, and I think her voice would really suit Handel repertoire (and yes I saw Lucy Crowe near the start of her career !) Isabelle Blain joined her in a superb duet and the tenor and bass of Ciaran Yeo and William Glendinning blended beautifully when the four soloists were working together. Really exceptional singing from all four of them. Throughout the evening the organist Charles Andrews accompanied in a sensitive way. He makes the organ in the church sound far grander than the specification on the National Pipe Register would suggest ! The audience and myself left just after 9p.m thoroughly entertained and rested from the beautiful programme which had been presented. Thank you to all who sang and played and organised such a successful event. The church was full to the back yet again. These concerts have become central to many people in the area and beyond, due to their quality and the low ticket price of just ÂŁ14/ÂŁ15. Long may they continue and if you have not been then you are missing out on some of the best nights of music in this part of NW London. Make sure you come to the next concert.

ARTS | NEWS | FEATURES | COMMUNITY NEWS | FORUM NEWS Me And My (Gone) Girl The curtain went up – and down – on our Patrons’ Party production of Noel Gay’s Me And My Girl in the final week of March – and what a challenging show it was! With less rehearsal time than a main autumn show, the cast and crew – in particular tireless director Barbara Shapiro – pulled out all the stops to put on a very entertaining production. As well as the weekday rehearsals, cast took the initiative and held extra rehearsals at home, two weekends were spent painting scenery, and everyone helped scour charity shops and their lofts in getting together the numerous props and finding their own costumes! We’d also like to thank Rob Barker for all his assistance with lighting and scenery, in particular dashing back from work on a production in New York to set up the lighting the Monday before curtain up. It really was a team effort. More than 200 patrons attended the shows, and we hope we sent them away entertained and happy. Without our patrons, MHMTC wouldn’t exist, so we’d like to say a special thanks for coughing up their £15 membership fee year after year, which helps us put on our shows

Let’s talk about Oklahoma! After a successful production of Me And My Girl, which was laid on exclusively for our loyal Patrons, all minds are now very much on our show – classic musical Oklahoma! This production is open to the public, and will run for five performances, from Wednesday 23 to Saturday 26 October 2019. Oklahoma! has been a firm favourite with audiences (and, later on, amdram groups) since it first wowed Broadway in 1943. In contrast to most of the light-hearted shows of the time, some scenes take a dark turn, but happily everything ends on a high note for most of the characters concerned. Farmer girl Laurey loves cowboy Curly, but can the young couple overcome the menacing actions of surly farmhand Jud to unify pre-Statehood Oklahoma’s dual strengths – farming and ranching? Penned by legendary writers Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, Oklahoma! has a list of hit songs as long as your arm, including Oh, What A Beautiful Morning, Surrey With The Fringe On Top, People Will Say We’re In Love and I’m Just A Girl Who Caint Say No. Our production is directed by Robin Scarborough, with Ricardo Fernandes making his MHMTC debut as MD. Rehearsals start on Mondays from 8 April at 8pm, at Hartley Hall, Flower Lane – off Mill Hill’s very own Broadway. Tickets will be on sale from 1 September.

BE A STAGE STAR We want to hear from anyone who’s interested in joining us on stage in Oklahoma! You don’t have to be Pavarotti to take part, either. We are not just looking for people to fill the lead roles, but also those who are happy being part of the show in the chorus. Initially, rehearsals are once a week on Mondays, from April to August. Then from September, there are two rehearsals every week, Monday and Wednesdays – but chorus aren’t generally needed on Wednesdays until October. It’s quite a time commitment, but for anyone who loves to sing, dance and act or wants to give it a go, it can be so enjoyable and uplifting. You do need to be able to hold a tune, as we are a singing group first and foremost – so new members have to take part in a very short, informal audition. There is also a £75 show fee, which helps with the extensive costs of putting on a show. Email join@mhmtc.co.uk or ring 07943 195490.

NEWS FROM MHMTC

RICARDO New Musical Director

By Farhat Dar Mill Hill Musical Theatre Company

ARTS | NEWS | FEATURES | COMMUNITY NEWS | FORUM NEWS A CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS Putting on a show – even in amdram – is hard, involved work, but is also enjoyable and rewarding. Many of MHMTC’s members either work or have busy family lives, and we would welcome volunteers to assist us in two aspects of the production – backstage during the performances and props manager. Backstage helpers assist the stage manager in moving scenery, furniture and equipment during the performances. There’s a great atmosphere backstage, as we’re a friendly, fun group. Volunteers would be required to come to some rehearsals near show dates to get to grips with the story and scene changes.

Email join@mhmtc.co.uk or ring 07943 195490.

Props are a vital part of the show, helping to flesh out the action on the stage. The job requires sourcing items as per a list drawn up by the director, either by liaising with the cast to see if they can contribute anything on the list. The props manager would also be there on show nights to ensure the props are ready to be brought on for the relevant scenes.

Quiz Night date for your diaries MHMTC’s next Quiz Night is being held on Saturday, 21 September 2019 at Trinity Church on The Broadway. Regular attendees know the form… There will be eight rounds of questions based on certain topics, plus one marathon round. Tickets cost £12.50, and you’ll get food (tasty fish and chips) in the interval too! What’s not to love? Book your place by emailing info@mhmtc.co.uk

SARACENS 56 27 GLASGOW WARRIORS SARACENS STORM TO SEMI FINALS IN EURO CUP Saracens secured their place in the Heineken Champions Cup semi-finals with a ruthless demolition of Glasgow Warriors at

Allianz Park. The home side ran in seven tries, including braces for both Liam Williams and David Strettle, to earn their place in the next stage of the competition. Atmosphere was high at Allianz Park ahead of this afternoon’s quarter-final match up with Glasgow Warriors and a frantic first half delivered everything a packed out Allianz Park could have wanted. The opening five minutes saw the side exchange seven pointers as first Glasgow and then Sarries crossed the whitewash in a breathless start to the game. A searing break from Stuart Hogg set up the Glasgow score; the full-back tore up field before offloading to Rory Hughes on the wing who in turn put Ali Price in for the score to the delight of the vocal Glasgow support. Moments later Williams did the honours for the home side, latching on to a high ball from Alex Goode, swatting away his defenders and dotting down under the sticks. It was the boot of Alex Lozowski that first put the home side ahead in the game, and from there the Men in Black never looked back. Enjoying the lion’s share of possession, Sarries put pressure on Glasgow with slick hands and high tempo play. Two deserved scores from Strettle and Brad Barritt gave the hosts an extended lead, leaving Glasgow trailing by 15 points on the half-hour mark. While two penalties, including a long range effort from Adam Hastings, allowed Glasgow to cut the deficit to 22-13 it seemed momentum was firmly with the north Londoners as they thwarted a strong Warriors attack on the stroke of half-time, bundling the blue shirts in touch to maintain a nine-point lead at the halfway point. There was no letting up for Saracens after the break. Further scores from Williams and Strettle put Sarries well clear of their visitors before a sixth try from man of the match Jamie George just past the hour confirmed Saracens’ dominance. here was plenty of fight still left in Glasgow however and, roared on by their travelling support, the Scots hit back with a try of their own through replacement scrum-half George Horne to bring the scores to 49-20. The away defence had been on the receiving end of a heavy bombardment throughout the game from Saracens’ attack and there was to be one final attacking effort for the Wolfpack before the game was out. Working their way through the phases Saracens wore down the Glasgow line until Nick Tomkpins had the chance to crash through for Sarries’ seventh score. Lozowski’s conversion hit the mark to bring the home side past the 50-point marker. The final say in the game belonged to Glasgow though as they finished the game as they had started it, with a try. With the clock in the red a Glasgow line out saw the ball worked towards the line, setting up Matt Fagerson who drove over. A last word for the visitors but the day belonged to Saracens who will now face Munster in the semi-finals. saracens.com
