from Helen Keller’s character. Because of that, Christabelle had to act in many characters who were blind, deaf, mute. and autistic. Despite the many roles she had to play, she continued to do well. Since then, she has starred in a total of 144 titles of FTV movies, soap operas, TV ads, print ads, and movies, assisted by her beloved parents, Mr. Hasiholan Marbun and Mrs. Cyrana Wulan Palar. Besides acting, Christabelle also loves singing, which eventually landed her an invitation from one of the famous Indonesian DIVAS, Mrs. RUTH SAHANAYA, to sing a duet on her latest album under the Pro-M label. The CD sold over 230.000 copies as of today. Now, she also has a mini CD album titled “My Prayer” produced by The Voice of Indonesia. Some of her songs were played on YouTube, Cable TV, national TV, and radio broadcast.

O

nce again, we’d like to introduce the very talented Indonesian girl named Christabelle Grace Marbun Palar, a young actress who has become increasingly successful and popular after starring in several movies in Indonesia. This cute 12 year old girl has grown to be really cheerful, energetic, and loves socializing with people. She is also kind of adventurous.

Ballet also became one of her hobbies at the time. No wonder, she joined one of the famous ballet schools, Namarina Ballet Academy, the prestigious Royal Academy of Dance Examination from England. She did many ballet performances and became the main role for many of the performances.

Christabelle entered the entertainment and advertising industry at the age of 1. Her first career in entertainment was when she was acting as a handicapped girl in a TV series. Her character at that time had the leading role for the TV series. Then she started to act for movies. Her first movie was a story adapted AmerIndo

With so many activities, you must have wondered how this beautiful girl devoted time to school and had time to complete her studies? “Well, that’s why I chose home schooling using the Accelerated Christian Education curriculum. With this curriculum I was able to learn on set or in various other places and my parents are the supervisors,” she said. Other than her home school and starring in movies, Christabelle also has a social activity and is an ambassador of “My dear younger brother and sister” to help underprivileged children to get proper education. She was a worship and devotional leader 6

at her Sunday school church for ages 9-12 years old and she is very happy to be a spiritual mentor for children aged 2-3 years old. Some of Christabelle’s best achievements have also been achieved during her career in entertainment. In August 2016, Christabelle was chosen by Singapore, out of thousands of kids around the world, to perform in Walt Disney World Orlando, Florida in front of directors, producers, casting directors, and many industry film professionals from 9 different countries. There were 622 kids from all around the world who applied and she became The TOP PERFORMER and The TOP VOCALIST out of all the applicants. Since then, she got 22 callbacks from the 26 Films Industry Professionals that came from that alone. Christabelle also earned the international achievement as TOP PERFORMER and TOP VOCALIST on Premiere Award Disney World, Orlando Florida, United State of America, at December 2016. On December 22, 2016 she was also awarded by Michael David Palance (Actor, producer, and CEO of Premiere) and Peyton List (An American movie star). She was mentored and guided by Dru West (Actor, producer, and head of the Performer Department of Premiere). Since then, she was chosen to become the Ambassador of PREMIERE Indonesia. And she was nominated as the Best Child Actor in the Indonesian Oscar Film Festival (Piala Citra Festival Film Indonesia) on November 2016 for her big screen movie titled “A Love Letter to Kartini”. To Christabelle, good luck and keep up the great work! (By: Irina) 7

SPECIAL REPORT

Pagelaran Wayang Goes To America Selain wayang kulit, ditampilkan pula Gamelan Ensemble dari kelompok gamelan anak-anak diplomat Indonesia dan Wilson High School Washington DC Gamelan Group di bawah pimpinan guru gamelan Muryanto, yang sudah 20 tahun lebih mengajar gamelan di AS. Mereka membawakan lagu Dolanan Gambang Suling, Aja Dipleroki, Ayo Praon, Pambagya, Gugur Gunung dan Kumandhang, secara apik.

A

Namun sang cucu berkilah, nenek jangan takut, para

Cooking Class with Mr.Okala and family Darlene Longacre

Jambiani, Zanzibar. It was a hot and humid day in Zanzibar, when we arrived at Mr. Okala’s open air, stick built, restaurant/home. It had a thatched roof, a sand floor and palm fronds woven together as the siding. It was one room, with a few tables and chairs, and a door that led to the kitchen which read “Okala’s Restaurant.” We were greeted by Mr. Okala, and he welcomed us into the room. He was a tall, distinguished looking man, who wore a long white robe which, in Swahili, is called a kanzu. Mr. Okala spoke excellent English. Insert photo Darlene and Mr. Okala

round board was placed on the mat, along with an interestingly shaped, rolling pin. This little round board is what is used to make chapati. On another table they had assembled the raw ingredients we would be using. For the spices, there was a plate that held cumin, cardamom, cinnamon and clove. Clove is known as the “king of spices” in Zanzibar. There were also pepper corns but I naively asked him what color pepper it was. The truth is there is only one pepper. The colors come from how it is processed, but at the end of the day there is only one pepper. (We learned this on the spice tour, which to be honest I did not know before.) I asked him why they make it in different colors, if it is really all the same. He said that some people like white pepper because you can’t see it in a light colored dish, green pepper looks nice on meat, and so on. The options make good business.

He began right away describing what we were going to do together. I was to cook with them, exploring local recipes. He explained that on this island, there is a fusion of Indian, African and Arab cultures that have blended together for many generations. Spices play an important role in the cuisine, as Zanzibar is known as the “Spice Island.” Today, he described, we will cook spiced rice, also known as pilau, which uses the most popular spices on the island. Also when we cook, we will use charcoal, as there is no gas or electricity. On one of the tables there was a small sized, grill filled with charcoal. When they have a large gathering, they use an open wood fire. It is common to see women carrying large bundles of firewood on their heads in the village. But for us today, charcoal is the best choice for fuel.

We started on the chapati, using the millet flour which was divided up into three containers; about one cup in each. Nadjima, Mr. Okala’s niece, who seemed to be very much in charge, demonstrated how to mix the dough, taking her bowl of flour and adding a little water at a time, all the while kneading it, using the side of the bowl and her hand. A little coconut oil was added to the dough to soften the texture. I following her lead with another bowl of flour.

Mr. Okala said that today we will make spiced rice, along with coconut crusted fish and curry. The curry we will make is a calamari curry but the same recipe can be applied to fish curry, octopus curry and even chago, the meat that comes from the small shellfish that are gathered by the women along the shore. The curry will be made with coconut milk, from a fresh, island coconut. We will also prepare a mango chutney, which is used as a condiment much like ketchup or chili sauce would be used. And of course, we will make chapati, an Indian style bread that is loved throughout the Island.

I overheard Mr. Okala say to my husband that I looked right at home, and it was true. It brought a smile to my face. We finished preparing the chapati into serpentines and then set them aside to rest.

Mr. Okala lit the charcoal and then put a mat on the floor. A AmerIndo

10

Meanwhile, a pot was placed over the coals and Mr. Okala began to make the calamari. He explained that calamari (and octopus) have their own water inside them so they do not need water to cook initially. Once they begin to brown, and after the water has evaporated from the calamari, a little more water is added. A cover was placed and it is set aside on the low fire. Another way to make it tender, according to Mr. Okala, is to refrigerate it or freeze it overnight. However, we were cooking very fresh calamari, caught earlier that day. As we were cooking, I asked about the women who gathered the shells for what they call chago. To me, it seemed like it was an awful lot of hard work to gather those tiny shells for a meal.

then cut up the red onion. We added them to the pot with a touch of oil. We stirred the onion, until it became a little translucent and brown and then began adding the spices. The rice was washed and set aside. We ground together the cumin, cardamom, garlic, ginger and clove in the mortar, using the end of the rolling pin that we had used for the chapati, as a pestle We held back on the cinnamon for just a minute. Zanzibar has an abundance of cinnamon on the island, so it is used in many dishes. We learned on the spice tour that the cinnamon sticks we get at home are actually the bark of the cinnamon tree rolled up to make sticks. The spices, including the cinnamon, were added to the onions with water, which was stirred in slowly and in a quantity equal to the amount of rice. The rice was then added and the spiced water mixture was boiled. We slowly stirred it to make sure the rice absorbed the water. (At this point, we would normally put the spiced rice in an oven, but here they don’t have ovens.) So, charcoal was placed on the sand floor and the rice pot was placed on top of the charcoal. A lid covered the pot and additional charcoal was added on top, thus creating an oven environment. We let it cook until the rice was tender and a lovely crust of rice formed on the bottom. The crusty part of the rice, a delicacy, is served on a separate plate.

Mr. Okala promptly explained that unlike the rest of the world, where there is hunger, no one in Zanzibar is hungry. Zanzibar is paradise! Where else in the world can you go out to the sea shore to get your meal, or catch an octopus or fish? You can also pick your fruits and vegetables from the land. His explanation completely changed my perspective of what we had witnessed on the seashore. As the women gather the meal from the sea, the children also enjoy playing on the beaches. We watched one little girl make sand balls, like one would form a snow ball. She would launch them at unsuspecting targets one of which was my husband, and then erupt in laughter.

Next, was the preparation of the coconut for the curry and the coconut, crusted fish. Mr. Okala whacked open a coconut with a piece of rebar, breaking it into two pieces but saving the water in a bowl. He kindly offered the nutritious water for us to drink, which was most welcome in the sweltering heat. The coconut meat in the shell was handed off to Nadjima. She sat sideways on an implement they call a goat, because of the sound it makes when you grate the coconut. It is very much

It was now time to prepare the ingredients for the spiced rice. We first peeled the garlic and placed it in the wooden mortar, 11

in flour, then dipped in the egg, then covered with the freshly, grated coconut. A beautifully seasoned wok with cooking oil was placed on the hot coals. The filets were then added and cooked until golden brown. As the cooking lesson progressed, it became dark outside and Mr. Okala’s beautiful daughter, Awena, and two of her girlfriends arrived and began watching intently. They introduced themselves and then asked us our names. They graciously offered to hold the light for my husband Dan, so he could continue to photograph the lesson. It was so much fun to watch them critique the pictures when he displayed them on the back of the camera, giving him a big smile and thumbs up when they liked the shot.

the same sound a goat makes while chewing. I observed Nadjima and then was asked to try it myself, which of course, I wanted to do. It was harder than it looked. They call this instrument a mbuzi in Swahili. (I decided right then, I must get one!) The grated coconut was then squeezed to release the coconut milk. The milk can be heated up to make coconut oil. This is a very organic way of consuming coconut oil, as opposed to the coconut oil made from copra, which is dried coconut meat. This milk will be added to the curry and the grated coconut will be used for the coconut crusted fish.

The mango chutney was next on the list. First, a green mango was peeled and chopped into small pieces, along with a red onion. A few cloves of garlic were put into the mortar and pestle, with cumin and cinnamon. A little oil was added to a pan and placed over the hot coals. Everything went in, except the tomato paste, which was added last, along with a little bit of water. It was stirred occasionally and left to simmer, until done.

When we began to make the curry, Mr. Okala said we would be using a lot of spice but not necessarily adding heat. The spices simply add flavor and the only thing that could be a little bit hot is the pepper. He finds that people misunderstand using spices in food, as adding heat. (Chili could of course be added to the curry if you like it hot.) We began to make the curry by peeling and chopping vegetables into small pieces. {A green mango is an unripe mango. A lime can be substituted if you do not have green mango.) We put all the cut up vegetables into the same pot as the calamari, which was already on the grill and added a little salt to taste. We then added spices; cumin, cinnamon and yellow curry powder. We stirred this and added garlic, a couple of cloves and coconut milk and covered it to simmer.

Last up was to finish the chapati. We took the serpentine rolls and placed a little flour on the board and rolled them out to fill the round board. Some oil was placed in the frying pan and the bread was cooked until little brown spots appeared Insert photo cooking chapati They were placed back on the board where Mr. Okala cut them into slices. Everything was now ready for our feast. We observed the girls setting the table, with only two place settings. It was at this time, we insisted that the table be set for everyone. There was no chance we were going to sit alone to enjoy the fruits of our collective labor. After some prodding and us explaining that the sharing of the meal to us is the best part, everyone eventually brought a plate to the table and sat with us. We began by cutting up the two fish filets into pieces so that everyone could enjoy it. All the cooked dishes were placed on the table, along with a couple of candles. The ambience

To make the coconut, crusted, filet of fish, we had two pieces of fresh, white, local fish fillets. First, a marinade was made with the juice of one lime, with a little salt and black pepper. The filets were added to absorb the flavor. Meanwhile two eggs were whisked vigorously until frothy. The filets were first coated AmerIndo

girls called to the neighbor kids to come and enjoy the food, as they shared their places at the table. After great conversation and many laughs, we ended our meal, full and satisfied in every way; an experience that we will forever cherish. Mr. Okala kindly escorted us back to the Red Monkey Lodge and we said our goodbyes to our new friend.

The meal was outstanding and the conversation even better. Mr. Okala spoke of the work he does for the community. He believes conservation of the precious resources on the island of Zanzibar and the sea is critical to its survival. He told us that tourism is now the number one economic driver in Zanzibar, overtaking the export of cloves and we must be vigilant in protecting the land.

Asante, Sana, Mr. Okala and family, simply thank you for very much in Swahili. After this experience, I am now the proud owner of an mbuzi (a goat) which I carried around in my luggage for the duration of our travels. I had so much fun explaining that the reason the bag was so heavy was because I was carrying around a goat. You can get all the of these delicious recipes at www. Internationalcuisine.com

He was curious how we found him and the little village of Jambiani. I told him that whenever we travel, our greatest joy is to get a true cultural experience, exactly like the one we were experiencing with him and his family. It was through research and help from the Red Monkey Lodge that we found him and his village. He was thankful that we had. It was gratifying when the 13

Gangguan Insomnia, Berbahayakah?

I

Selain mengalami kesulitan tidur, penderita insomnia biasanya AmerIndo

menghasilkan hormon melatonin yang bisa mendatangkan kantuk. •• Berdoa sebelum tidur.

(By: Irina/berbagai sumber)

10 Things You Don’t Know

About April Fools

3. How it began is still a mystery One particular version of the story is that April Fools’ began in France when Pope Gregory XIII adopted the Gregorian Calendar. Adopting the Gregorian Calendar means that the new year would be moved from April 1st to January 1st. According to historians, some people would still celebrate new year on April 1st as a joke.

very year on April 1st, numerous countries celebrate April Fools’ Day by playing pranks or practical jokes. Indonesians, with their huge appetite for single (jomblo) jokes, often tell their friends to confess to their crushes during this day. “If they say no, you just have to shout ,’April Fools!’ And all will be good!” Other countries like Ireland would put a “kick me” sign on their friends and relatives as a joke. Some countries even have magazines, newspapers, and media publishing false hoaxes in order to celebrate this day. Almost everyone knows what April Fools’ Day is, but here are 10 things you might not know about April Fools’ Day:

4. Taco Bell’s Liberty Bell On April 1st, 1966, Taco Bell took out a fullpage advertisement in 7 leading US newspapers announcing their purchase of the Liberty Bell. They purposefully said they renamed their company name “Taco Liberty Bell” after the “purchase” they repeated the story to ensure that people will fall for it. It was a good choice of words, but people quickly found out that the story was a hoax.

1. The earliest recorded reference to April Fools’ Day was in Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales in 1392. The Canterbury Tales is a collection of 24 tales written by Geoffrey Chaucer in 13871400. The tales in this book is written in Middle English, which is different from Modern English. Some people argue that the April Fools’ reference derives from a line in the Nun’s Priest Tale. He described the setting of the tale taking place “syn March bigan thirtty dayes and two,” which translates to 32 days since March began. This would either fall on April 1st or April 2nd. However, since there is no clear mention of pranks and deceit, it is unclear whether Chaucer was recording an April Fools’ prank or not.

5. Google’s April Fools’ tradition Google is known for its attempt to outdo itself each year with its April Fools’ Jokes. In 2013, for example, they introduced the Google Wallet Mobile ATM. This device would allow customers to withdraw cash from their mobile phones through

2. Although it started becoming very popular ever since the 19th century, April Fools’ Day is not a public holiday in ANY country It is clear that April Fools’ Day will be very dangerous if celebrated by everyone. A lot of trouble has emerged as a result of people going too far with their pranks and practical jokes.

their Google Wallet Mobile ATM. Google also claimed that it would dispense the rare two and fifty dollar bills, as well as one dollar bills. They further added that the $1 will be perfected when people are confronted by a surprisingly talented “Hippy Mime Banjo Player” on a street corner. What a great prank! 6. In France, April Fools’ Day is called Poisson d’Avril On April 1st, French children would tape a picture of a fish on the back of their friends. Later, when their victims found out that they had this fish taped on their back, they would yell out, “Poisson d’Avril!” which literally translates to “April fish!” 7. In Scotland, April Fools’ Day was traditionally called, “Huntigowk Day” “Huntigowk” means “hunt the gowk,” and “gowk” is an old Scottish word for a foolish person. Traditionally, the prank would start by a person sending a “gowk” to deliver a sealed message. The message content, “Dinna laugh, dinna smile. Hunt the gowk another mile.” Therefore, the recipient of the message would have to send the “gowk” to another person, with a similar message. The prank would go on until the “gowk” realizes his own foolishness or if someone takes pity on him.

mischief, and misinformation throughout history. It has all the collection of notorious hoaxes from the Middle Ages up to the present. It even has a special gallery for April Fools’ Day called “Gallery of April Fool’s Day hoaxes.” Do not forget to give this museum a visit when you are in the South California area! 10. Apparently, you can grow spaghetti in your backyard! On April 1st, 1957, BBC aired a TV program in the United Kingdom showing a woman in Southern Switzerland harvesting spaghetti from the family’s “spaghetti tree.” After the woman carefully picked the spaghetti strands, she laid off the strands outside to dry. Since spaghetti was not very well-known in the UK and considered as an exotic cuisine, many people actually asked BBC for advice on growing their own spaghetti trees. One of the best pranks ever!

8. 68% executives consider April Fools’ pranks unsuitable for workplace. According to a 2010 national study by The Creative Group, 68% of advertising and marketing executives consider April Fools’ pranks unsuitable in the office, only 3% found them appropriate. Often times, bosses found April Fools’ pranks unprofessional and that the payoff of the joke is not significant enough to counter the effect of losing a job. This might be a good reminder for us to think twice about pulling pranks on our colleagues. To be sure make certain that our employers are cool about pulling pranks on each other. 9. There’s a Museum of Hoaxes! The Museum of Hoaxes is based in San Diego, California. It was established in 1997, with the aim of exploring deception, 27

Korean Skincare Routine

I

normal alkaline soap cleanser is because it is able to remove oilbased makeup and debris without stripping moisture off their skin. Additionally, doing massages to your face while doing so will also increase blood flow and circulation to the region. This means you will not only cleanse and add moisture to your face, you will also induce brighter skin through this first step.

f you have visited Korea or watched Korean dramas before, you might notice that most Koreans have poreless-looking, eye-blindingly glowing, dewy skins. Have you ever wonder how these Korean women (and men) are able to achieve those looks? It turns out that most Koreans have one of the most (or the most) exhaustive multi-process skincare routine: they have at least a 10 step skincare routine, which explains a lot about their perfect porcelain skin.

Step 2: Foam Cleanser Charlotte Cho, a board certified esthetician behind Soko Glam says, “Believe it or not, after one cleanse, you’re still going to have stuff left over.” Applying a second foam cleanser to wet skin will help remove the leftover impurities like sweat and dirt. Foam cleansers are usually water-based it will clear out all impurities and still leave the skin moisturized. Double cleansing with oil and foam will leave your skin completely cleared of any bad particles, preparing it for receiving the nutrients that will be applied later in the regimen.

Unlike the Western skincare routine, Korean skincare routine is embedded deep into the Korean beauty culture. Korean girls would start taking care of their skin when they have not even reach puberty. Alice Yoon, the founder of Asian beauty online shop Peach & Lily, said, “In Korea, at age 11, anti-aging is already a thing.” Here, most of us often waited until we hit the age of 25, before scrambling to Sephora to get that $100 eye cream to treat our puffy and dark under-eye areas that only get worse year after year. Some people who tried this routine even claim that using this for just one week made a difference; they noticed less breakouts, less redness, and better skin tone. So, if you want to know what goes into the Korean 10 step skincare routine, keep on reading!

Step 3: Exfoliate Exfoliation is very crucial in Korean skincare as it does not only clean out clogged pores, it also scrubs off dead skin cells. Use a gentle natural exfoliator that will not irritate our skin. After exfoliation, the inner, fresh skin will be revealed. Even though this step is very crucial, Korean estheticians recommend to not

contain collagen and Vitamin E that will help prevent aging. Cho explains that we do not need to put on sheet masks everyday make it only twice every week. Sheet masks help force the skin to absorb nutrients and moisture better than if we just apply cream or serum. The sheets soaked with nutrients are pressed into our skin, preventing it from evaporating before our skin is able to absorb the good stuff. When using sheet mask, we can also skip the essence and serum steps because sheet masks contain these ingredients as well.

exfoliating our face more than twice a month as it might irritate our skin. They also recommend us to focus exfoliating on the areas where blackheads grow the most, like the t-zone area. Step 4: Refresh Even though we pick the most gentle and natural products out there, multiple cleansing will still leave our skin fragile. Therefore, Cho believes that it is essential for us to rehydrate the skin with toner. Toner will still help remove some residue from cleansers, but it will also help restore skin’s pH balance. It soothes the skin and help prepares it for the next step: essence.

Step 8: Eye cream There are different eye creams for different undereye concerns; there are some for under-eye circles and there are some for fine lines. Apply eye cream very gently with our ring finger with tapping motion to avoid tugging and rubbing. Tugging and rubbing the sensitive and fragile eye area will create premature wrinkles. The more intense your undereye problems, the more frequent you should apply eye cream.

Step 5: Essence This step is probably a little ambiguous even to Korean women because essence is very similar to ampoule or serum that will be applied later. However, applying essence to the skin is still considered one of the most important steps. Gently pat essence to the skin with clean hands instead of cotton pads to ensure that we do not waste any of the nutrients to the cotton. Essence helps the skin on a cellular level, increasing the rate of cell turnover. This helps smooth and brighten the skin.

Step 9: Moisturize Applying face cream or moisturizer is essential to lock in all the moisture and nutrients from the previous steps. Korean women believe that doing the skincare routine in layers like this, Apply face cream with both ring and middle finger with gentle strokes to ensure that it truly penetrates the skin.

Step 6: Serum or Ampoule Treatments Ampoules or serums are super concentrated versions of essences. It helps brighten skin, fade brown or sun spots, and smooth fine lines. Cho explains that this step is not necessary if you do not have pigmentations, wrinkles, or brown spots.

Step 10: SPF or Night Cream Even though we just applied moisturizer and gazillions other products and our face might feel like a disco ball, we need to make sure that our face stay hydrated as we sleep overnight. In the morning, however, Korean women are all about the SPF. UV rays from the sun is harmful to the skin, it causes premature aging, sun spots, and many more. This is why even makeup products in Korea usually contain SPF; most Korean BB cushion compact contains sunscreen with at least SPF 50++ protection. These kinds of products allow Korean women to apply makeup and protect the skin against UV rays all at the same time. (By: Michelle)

Step 7: Sheet Mask Find a sheet mask that is customized to your skin needs. If you have acne-prone skin, opt for a sheet mask that contains grapefruit extract. If you have mature skin, look for sheet masks that 29

Langkah Jitu Atasi Pelecehan Seksual Pada Anak

M

(By: Irina/berbagai sumber)

How Much Coverage Do I Need For My General Liability Policy?

amounts of insurance protection. Risk is also a concern when determining insurance amounts. Those companies in a high risk industry will definitely want to increase the amount of coverage to provide greater protection.

etermining general liability coverage for a business can be one of the most difficult items to determine. How much coverage should I have? Do to our society and the nature of our lawsuit hungry public and the many lawsuits that come about the question is one of the most important a business owner needs to ask. Claims and lawsuits for injuries and property damage can be in the millions and you do not want that kind of exposure for yourself personally or your business. Courts in different states have different policies as it relates to awarding damages and more trouble may come if you are in a state known for very large financial judgments.

General liability insurance pays for claims of property damage caused by employees or bodily injuries to customers or visitors on site. The insurance will typically pay per occurrence up to the policy limits. So if a company was sued for $3 million and only had coverage for $2 million, the general liability coverage would pay up to the $2 million leaving a balance due of $1 million. This illustrates why having the right amount of coverage is vital to truly protecting a business.

More lawsuits with larger financial awards mean that it is increasingly difficult to ascertain how much insurance is truly enough. Many companies suggest a minimum insurance limit of $1 million in general liability coverage. According to forbes.com, resume is what gets you to your interview, not what gets you hired. Resume should be polished because it is the first impression for your employers, however, you should also focus on other things

s a university student who will graduate in a year, a career became somewhat more prominent reality than something that I will eventually do in the near future. As a child, I would dream of becoming a doctor, astronaut, vet, etc. Then, I started changing my dream job and learned that having a career is not as simple as coming up with the idea of it. After hearing stories of other people’s career I realized that most university students have not dip their toe into the water just yet. Simply put, how much do we know about the job market these days?

2. Practice your communication skills The best time to learn communication skill is in college. A communication class, public speaking, and debate would be helpful for those who lacked or even an expert in communication. This particular skillset is important for networking, interviews, or even just speaking to other people. Best of all, communication is a skill that you learn, not what you are born with. It is one of those skills that would improve overtime as you meet more people and experience more things in your life.

According to National Association of College and Employers, companies are estimated to hire about 5 percent more graduates from the class of 2016 than last year. The world is accepting more jobs and people into the market. One should be excited at the prospect of more career options and nervous as well. There are certainly more expectations from companies who hired. Here are the things that I learned that might help university students’ first foray into the working world. 1. LOVE LIFE

Lasting Relationships Rely on These 7 Things

M

aintaining a relationship is a difficult chore that requires at least two individuals’ efforts. Often times, as people grow old and complacent with their significant other, they start to forget the first reason why they got married in the first place. Their marriages become boring; the initial passion turns into a mere obligation and formality. Meaningless fights increase and the once beautiful marriage turns into a disaster just within years.

their gut feelings; worrying too much about non-existent or uncontrollable situations. They regret not following their passion because they worried too much that they would not succeed, they regret wasting three months of their lives worrying about something uncontrollable like getting laid off or a bankrupt business. Most of the things we worry about do not happen, while the bad things that happened are not at all predictable. So, why waste your time worrying? In marriages and relationships, savor the moment together instead of worrying about things.

Karl Pillemer, a Ph. D. gerontologist at Cornell University, interviewed more than 1000 elders on topics like happiness, work, and health. Some of the elders Pillemer interviewed admitted that they have been loyal to their partners for more than 70 years. He synthesized those advices and here are the seven pieces of wisdom.

2. The LITTLE things Pilemer says that if we could only learn one thing about how to keep the spark alive after many decades, is emphasizing the little things. We tend to view marriage and relationships universally, but we fail to notice that relationship is actually made up of micro interactions that happen day-to-day. Research even shows that how we respond to interruption from our partner determine how good the relationship will be. Will you immediately dismiss them when they show their designs in the middle of your presentation? Or will you show support and a positive attitude to what they are passionate about? According to the old and the wise, little things matter. When they grow old, what they remembered was the tiny surprises, positive attitudes, cheerful moments, and the support they get from their significant others.

1. Not worrying too much We might expect that what the wise would have the most regret in their lives and be something big, like an affair or shady business deals. However, numerous studies have found that the #1 thing that the elders regret the most is not following AmerIndo

3. Do NOT sacrifice your relationship for your children There is a research called the U-shaped curve of marital happiness, which explains how marriages start very happy and diminish quickly as soon as the couples have their first child. Now, the old couples are not trying to tell us that we should not love our children or abandon them completely. Their argument is that it is highly unlikely that children will receive good parenting from couples that have awful relationships, basically the health of marital relationship is crucial for children’s growth. Even if it is something very cringy like weekly date night, couples need their time together. They need to develop the micro-interactions and conversations that constitute the health of the relationship.

to reach your dreams--relationships is no different. Successful relationships rely on effective communication. Divorces usually happen as a result of communication breakdown. Therefore, young couples should learn how to communicate effectively early on. Learn how to discuss the important issues and how to view things from different perspectives. It is not going to be easy, but doing all these things will allow you and your partner to open up. As a result, you will understand your partner better and your partner will understand you better. 6. Mindset: marriage is permanent Mindset plays a huge role in almost everything that we do. If we have the mindset of failure, then it is highly likely that we will fail. Therefore, if we perceive marriage as something that is permanent and unbreakable, it is more likely that we will fight and put in the effort in order to ensure that the marriage will work. In order to be a professional boxer, for example, you need to follow a discipline routine, rigorous training, and exercise. Being a professional boxer is a lifelong career path, and it takes a long time to be an expert in it. Same goes with marriage; it is a lifelong path. And as time goes by, we gain more experience and we gain a better understanding and learn to communicate more effectively, appreciate each other more and more blessings in your life.

4. Similarly core values is linked to better marriages Contrary to the popular saying, “opposites attract,” elders and researches actually show that marrying someone that is similar to you might result in a better marriage. The similarities that matter the most are the core values, such as the importance of money and work, how children are supposed to be raised, what are the goals in their lives, and so many more things. Couples that share core values tend to have longer and happier marriages. It just makes everything a little easier. Again, the elders are not saying that difference is bad. On the contrary, a little difference may actually spice things up. However, imagine if you practice a strong ethnic culture while your partner does not and he/she does not respect it, there is no doubt that fighting or avoidance will arise among you, which will not result in a great relationship.

7. Build a legacy At the end, all of us would like to reminisce about who we are and what have we brought into the world. Pillemer mentioned that what is really important to people is to be able to see how their life mattered, what legacy have they left, and whether there was a story that would be able to wrap things up. Do not wait until we are 60 years old to build a legacy. Start asking yourself questions about your life’s purpose and what kind of legacy do you want to leave. What is the purpose of your life? What brings you happiness? Why would your life matter? Who are you to those around you? People who have answers and able to construct a narrative of these questions usually have a purpose in their lives. They are more open and serene to the end of life, and they will tend to treat people with dignity. (By: Michelle)

5. Communication, c o mmu n ica t i o n , communication Communication is essential for us to be successful. You may have great business ideas, great engineering designs, high intelligence, and many more. But if you cannot communicate your ideas, people would not understand you and it will be difficult for you 45

Bami Kua

Noodle soup with pangsit goreng This noodle soup is a perfect, complete meal. My mom Jessy served it with pangsit goreng (fried wontons), see recipe of last month. © 2017jeffkeasberry Indo Dutch Kitchen Secrets - Bami Kua

Directions • Melt the butter and sauté the onion and garlic until light brown. Add the ground beef; when done, add most of the leek, the sesame oil, 1⁄2 stock cube and pepper. Add salt to taste. Remove from heat and set aside.

Ingredients • 2 medium onions, chopped • 3 cloves garlic, crushed OR 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1 tablespoon butter • 14 ounces ground beef • 3 1⁄2 ounces leek, sliced • 1 tablespoon sesame oil • 1 1⁄2 chicken stock cubes • salt and pepper • 2 eggs • garlic powder • 1 package bami (dried egg noodles) • 1 tablespoon oil • Garnish: • 4 leaves butter lettuce • 2 tablespoons fried onions • 1 spring onion, sliced • 12 pangsit goreng (deep-fried wontons filled with seasoned meat) AmerIndo

• Bring 4 cups of water to a boil with 1 stock cube. When the water boils, add the rest of the leek, turn off the heat and set aside. Add salt to taste. • Beat the eggs with a pinch of salt, pepper and a little garlic powder, and make an omelet. When cool enough to handle, roll up the omelet and slice into thin strips. • Add the noodles to a pot with boiling water. Separate the strands with a fork, and simmer over medium heat until done. Drain in a colander and rinse with cold water. Add 1 tablespoon of oil and mix through to prevent sticking. 46

• To assemble: Lay 1 lettuce leaf at the bottom of a deep soup bowl, then lay some cooked bami in the center of the lettuce. Pour some chicken broth over the bami; the noodles should remain visible, not be immersed under the broth. Spoon some ground beef on top of the noodles. Garnish with a few strips of omelet, fried onions and spring onion. Place 3 pangsit goreng along the edge just prior to serving, so they remain crispy.

Tip: If you prefer pork, boil 3 1⁄2 ounces cubed pork in 4 cups of water with 2 tablespoons fish sauce, and simmer for 3 minutes until done. Use this pork broth instead of the chicken broth. Add the cubed pork to the soup bowl along with the ground beef.

Benarkah Ayam Berkokok Sesudah Petrus Menyangkal Yesus?

F

Yakni: pukul 6 sore hingga 9 malam, pukul 9 malam hingga 12 tengah malam, pukul 12 tengah malam hingga pukul 3 pagi, dan pukul 3 hingga pukul 6 pagi.

(silakan baca: Kisah Para Rasul pasal 9, ayat 1-9).
