The Trustee can only deal with the Bankrupt person’s equitable share in the property. In other words, if a property is jointly owned then this normally means the value of the property less any secured charges, such as a mortgage, which will leave the equity available, of which half would belong to the Trustee to realise. This can be done by the joint owner buying out the Trustee’s interest, a remortgage, reaching a settlement or at worst the sale of the property. An Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA) is a contractual arrangement with creditors to repay debts over a set period of time which can freeze interest and charges. It is based on monthly contributions that can be made and is an option that only an individual can propose. Approval of an IVA is subject to agreement by creditors. It provides room for negotiation and allows an individual to retain some control. Income will be assessed in order that contributions can be made to the IVA and the family home will still need to be dealt with, but this can be negotiated on terms which allow a controlled solution to be found. Much of the inspiration comes from her father, a businessman who helped her develop her entrepreneurship. ‘He was my first coach and is responsible for my entrepreneuring character’.

to go out, never go shopping. All I used to think about was my goal’. It worked in the end. With a team of five people, Edilamar heads the business and supervises everything personally. ‘I am not lazy. Lucky is to get up early and go to work’ she declares.

Edilamar arrived in London just three years ago, after spending some time in Spain, and since then has battled to conquer a place in her field. The initial plan was to work in a hospital since she trained to be a nurse. But soon her plans changed and her passion for aesthetics spoke louder. Thus she pooled together her other qualifications, in nutrition and diet, and took the plunge into the world of aesthetics by opening her own workshop. According to Edilamar, the beauty industry has been growing with great strides and, as a consequence, it exposes one of the greatest problems of this industry: shortage of skilled staff. ‘Informality is a major obstacle. There are many unskilled people performing serious jobs that can affect people’s lives’. Based on client awareness, this professional woman explains that aesthetics does not deliver miracles and is instead a treatment for specific conditions. ‘Aesthetics can help but does not deliver miracles. I cannot promise something that will not happen. It is necessary to inform the client so they know what to expect’. The journey up to here has not been an easy one and has taken much effort and sacrifice. It took two years of investment and dedication. ‘I never used

For Edilamar, the secret of her success is the dedication with which she treats her clients. ‘I personally meet and greet the clients. The hallmark is care and attention, and success comes with client recognition’, she says. As for failure, Edilamar is emphatic; ‘It takes maturity to acknowledge that not even Jesus managed to please everyone, and humility to accept that you cannot do everything, especially when it involves chemical processes that cannot be fully controlled since they depend, in part, on the way each client reacts to them’. Living one day at a time and always open to opportunities, Edilamar is a businesswoman who will not let opportunities pass her by and has valuable advice for those who are starting out.. ‘It is necessary to take risks, without fear; and if you fail, pull yourself together and keep on trying. It can only get so bad. Keep on trying but not for too long. Give yourself a time frame, if it does not work after a while, start afresh and work hard’. 13

Maternity: the delight and the pain. Katia Kauffman Pessa Clinical Psychologist I was born with the gift for bleeding. Every woman carries in herself the eternity that fills in her womb and her soul. To be able to bear the beauty of generating eternity while, at the same time, to be faced by the everyday… there lies the pain and delight of motherhood. The transformation which occurs to our bodies and our lives … and when are we ready for this adventure? To be a mother is a choice. Once made, each woman carries in her womb the privilege of building life beyond herself. For many of us life proceeds along a course with challenges for building conditions of stability first. Time sets its limits and the biological clock… tick, tock. Time to become a mother has arrived for you at… at 40! It was like that in the life of Magda, a businesswoman who after a professional career change encountered, along with her partner, Fred, the beauty of becoming a mother to Elias, today 1 year and 9 months old. And thus, time keeps on redesigning itself. And in this storytelling, we are all weavers. We place the thread of life at the center of the wheel and keep on weaving our motherhood, at different ages. And with every delightful moment we also live our pains, bearing eternity in small people-shaped parcels. Welcome to the wheel!

#NORULESNOJUDGEMENT

What would it be like to live in a world without rules? The absence of rules may suggest a scenario of total chaos. And what would it be like to live in a world without the deluge of judgements which we have to wade through every day? A feeling of peace invades my being when I envisage living my life without being judged. Just imagine if we could reach perfect harmony, balancing rules and judgements in a way that could favour our evolution as women who constantly fight for space and respect in a culturally chauvinistic society? But how? How to break rules without creating chaos? How to ignore judgements without suffering? Among many options, I would highlight PAIN. Unfortunate is the woman who cannot turn pain into a strong ally against the upheavals of a journey marked by so many challenges. Pain damages.

Often (or almost always) it arrives without notice, takes over our lives and, for a time, becomes the lord of our identities. We lose our voices and surrender space so that it may reign and shout. Pain shouts. Pain in the soul eats away the flesh. It can arrive with a great bang, through a terrible disease or the loss of someone dear. But it can also arrive silently, through loneliness, need, prejudice, low self-esteem or abandonment. Regardless of how it reaches us, it is always devastating; it turns us inside out and pushes us to the limits of our deepest frailties. But, like many other things in life, pain comes to an end. It’s when it leaves us that we realise who we are and everything we learnt while we trod lamely along its dreary road. Pain educates and is a master in the process of evolution; it teaches resilience and resignation. Pain strengthens, empowers and makes us wiser. Pain capacitates 16

and teaches us about rules and judgements. Pain teaches us to LOVE. To love specially who we are and the better version of us that we try to get out of ourselves every day. When it finally leaves us, it leaves behind a stronger self-esteem; an unwavering force. The security of being someone who loves and respects oneself regardless of skin colour, weight, sexual preferences, disabilities or anything else that society may deem different or outside the norms. We then love ourselves just the way we are. And are happy to be in our own bodies. And when this joy is genuine, we realise that not all rules deserve that much attention and, more importantly, that no judgement is capable of destroying the woman we have become. Accept the pain so that you can love. Love what you see. Value the things you have. You are unique and that is what makes you special.

SAMANTA BULLOCK WHEELCHAIR USER, ATHLETE AND MODEL

Marília Maciel Journalist

With an easy smile, genuine beauty and an enviable disposition for breaking new grounds, this is Samanta Bullock. At 39, the native of Rio Grande do Sul is constantly fighting for the inclusion of all disabilities in sports and in fashion. At the age of 14 Samanta fell victim to a firearm accident and became paraplegic. For the girl who used to play tennis and had taken the first steps in becoming a model, this could have meant a nightmarish future, but that is not what happened. From an early age she had been a team leader at her school’s handball team and not even the accident managed to stop the girl that had always been in love with sports. At age 19 Samanta moved to Porto Alegre all by herself in order to attend the Faculty of Dentistry but difficulties with accessibility and the overall structures of the classrooms which were not adapted for wheelchairs forced her to quit. ‘The wheelchair is a power raiser: if you are already a strong person, it will make you even stronger, especially when going after your rights in society; if you are a weak person, from the moment that you sit in a wheelchair you will think that your world has ended’. She then started working at the 19

Legislative Assembly of Rio Grande do Sul, where she worked in various areas before being transferred to Brasilia where she worked at the National Senate House. This coincided with her treatment at the Sarah Kubitsheck Hospital, where she rehabilitated. At the 2007 Parapan American Games she won a silver medal alongside Rejane Candida, against the USA team. During her work at the National Senate, she came into contact with a tennis project aimed at disabled people which she went on to attend twice a week and only left to compete and represent Brazil in three world tournaments. In 2012, already living in London, she took part in the opening ceremony of the London Paralympic Games where she performed on a 4 metre sway pole with choreography to the sound of Rihanna; beating yet another challenge against limitation.

With a life story of overcoming obstacles through sports, she currently works for the International Paralympic Committee, helping to empower Paralympic athletes, giving talks about the values of sport, career change and preparing athletes for the life of a sportsperson. After she started playing tennis, Samanta also got invited to be a photographic model for sponsors like wheelchair manufacturers, wheelchair user clothing brands. Since then she has realised that she could go back to the modelling career she had left behind. Her first wheelchair catwalk show was for a jeans brand in Goiania and since then other jobs have turned up; she has already made fashion campaigns for big brands and had the opportunity of modelling in Portugal, Brazil, Spain, Turkey and London. She is an ambassador for Fashion Inclusivo, a Brazilian programme

that counts more than 100 disabled models, and of Models for Diversity, a fashion and beauty media company that is aimed towards all kinds of beauty, and also of Parallel London, the world’s first inclusive fun running race. Her greatest achievement was to take part in this year’s London Fashion Week for designer Louise Linderoth; the collection of jeans designed for wheelchair users made Samanta shine on the catwalk. ‘To take part in the London Fashion Week was my life’s greatest ambition, I waited 31 years for this moment.’ For the future, Samanta is planning a project that involves fashion and accessibility and will continue campaigning for accessibility in all areas. According to the trends from the latest fashion weeks and also from what shops have already started to display in their windows, you will begin to notice that winter is arriving full of style and with a very 80’s influence which is apparent in the ankle boots and vinyl. Shades of pink and red used in the same composition as well as mustard make the palette of colours for the season. The winter coat is the main feature of the season; those in fake fur will be the must have item this year and the colours nude and blue will very popular. concise term. The term ‘vegan’ containing the three first and the last two letters from ‘vegetarian’ worked perfectly. In the words of Donald Watson, it was the ‘beginning of the end of vegetarianism’. The new term won supporters and gathered strength and, nowadays, veganism converts are in every part of the world. With foods totally vegetable based (legumes, vegetables, fruits, non-dairy milks, soya protein, wholemeal grains, etc.), veganism when practice with the help of a Nutritionist, offers countless health advantages. Rich in fibre and proteins, the vegan diet is considered one of the healthiest according to the Ministry of Health. However, it is important to consult a nutritionist in case of any food restrictions.

How and when veganism started? According to The Vegan Society, the first established charity, the theme started to gather attention from the moment when some doctors and specialists started to openly oppose the consumption of eggs and dairy. The ‘revolution’ started in 1955, when Donald Watson decided to join other vegetarians who wanted to remove dairy products from their diet. His purpose was to transform the relationship between men and animals into a dignified one, without exploitation and hatred. At the time the group felt the need for a new word to describe themselves. One of the first ideas was ‘Non-dairy Vegetarians’. But after some thought they realised they needed a more

Life benefits of going vegan According to studies, the adoption of veganism can decrease the risk of contracting Type 2 Diabetes and improves the treatment results in those who suffer from the disease. 32

A strict vegetable diet helps to maintain a correct body weight. A vegan diet also avoids most of the junk foods that often have ingredients of animal origin. ‘Studies reveal that vegans tend to have a lower body mass index compared to those of omnivores and a lower overweight and obesity rate’. It can also improve blood pressure. ‘Scientific studies demonstrate that vegans tend to have their blood pressure within ideal levels’, points out an expert. A vegan diet also helps to keep cholesterol under control. A better control of both body weight and cholesterol levels paired with a reduction of the risk of diabetes can significantly lower the risks of cardiovascular diseases like heart attacks and strokes. Reduction of risk of some types of cancer. ‘Scientific studies on large populations demonstrated a significant reduction of some types of cancer among followers of strict vegetarianism’. Better food awareness: the

search for a new lifestyle that challenges old dietary habits and makes people enquire more about the food they eat and what to avoid will ultimately lead to better dietary habits. The person who adopts veganism searches for information that makes them more aware of their role within the environment and of the consequences of their actions upon it, their diet choice has a lower environment impact. Whatever the motivation may be in adopting veganism, the change of habits in this field will always bring benefits in other areas. ‘So, if you look for a healthier diet, free from animal products, you will also have a more ethical diet that promotes lower environmental degradation’, emphasises the specialist. And she concludes: ‘When we change ourselves, the world around us also changes. Be it for your own benefit or that of the animals or the planet, change is always worthwhile.’ Besides having a diet restricted to vegetables and fruits, being a vegan involves more than that:

33

it is a lifestyle where one does not wear clothes, shoes, bags or use products made from animal skin, in the name of the planet’s sustainability. The residence of a vegan will contain absolutely nothing derived from animals like leather or wool. Nowadays many celebrities are followers of veganism and proudly defend this noble cause To name some: Kate and Rooney Mara, Brad Pitt, Bryan Adams, Jennifer Lopez and Beyoncé. A suggestion of some reading is the book Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer. For films about Veganism there are various options: Vegucated, Cowspiracy, Live and let live, Carnage. Have a go! Try to remove the meat from your diet and you will soon realise that you don’t miss it. girls, we are parents of children

They have realised that it’s pointless to try to fit the children into behavioural boxes that separate boys from girls. Nowadays, children and also parents have more freedom to express their ideas and live them in the way they think best. And if the best, for the girls, is to play at being astronauts, they are free to exercise what matters most: to have a happy childhood.

Camila Ribas Journalist

I

If there’s something that everyone knows, it is that a mother (or a father) is a world in itself, filled with subtleties, wishes and colours. Beyond the traditional pink and blue, many other colours have arrived and the education of boys and girls has been increasingly unique, in which the pattern of respect - especially to people – is in vogue.

With over 15 years living abroad, Helena had all her three boys in London, and all are under 5. For her, it was hard to learn that the first child would be a boy. But soon after the child was born, she realised that nothing really mattered, except love. ‘I am in love with my boys’. Regarding their education, she is very clear: ‘I think that the only difference is anatomical. I don’t see that we have to treat them differently because of gender. I raise my boys to be good people, polite, respectful and happy. I think that if I had had a girl I would raise her in the same way’, she adds.

The traditional choice of toys by gender or colour is increasingly far from reality, although it is very present in children’s stores, whether for fashion or recreational activities. Beyond colours, what is really cool for children is to play and to dream. Helena Morgan is mother to Eric, Liam and Oscar, and Kelly Zocante is mother to Victoria and Zoe. These two Brazilian women live in London and are raising their children far from their country of origin.

More than parents of boys or

At home, habits are strongly observed for the education of the children. At Helena’s house, all jobs are equally divided between the couple, and ‘when they mention that ‘boys do this’ and ‘girls do that’, we talk about it and show that things are not quite like that’. At Kelly’s house, the girls imitate their mother, who tries to be very feminine and encourages this in the girls.

education need a little more attention, like keeping the legs together when sitting. She moved to London in 2009 and believes that girls can dress more prettily. But, apart from that, she believes they can play with whatever they like: ‘It’s their decision’. Helena is cool when the boys choose a toy that may sound awkward to friends. She says that one day one of the boys asked for a dress from the film Frozen. ‘I then bought the dress. He liked it so much that he even slept in it. He did not see it as a girl’s dress, but simply as a piece of clothing like any other; as the plaything of the moment. We have a toy kitchen at home and the boys love it! They play with it for hours.

‘Victoria is a very delicate lady; she is gently spoken, very bright and feminine. Little Zoe does not choose her clothes yet, but sometimes borrows my high heeled shoes and wears them in the house. I think they watch and try to imitate me’. Whatever the parents’ choice might be, what really matters is that children get enough love and affection during childhood so that they can grow up feeling loved and supported by their parents, besides being in a respectful family environment. This will provide them with more emotional balance and enable them to make conscious choices daily that will bring them a happy reality.

It is just another toy’. In this respect, Kelly prefers to encourage feminine habits in her girls: ‘If I can choose, I prefer to have them attending ballet classes and would choose judo for boys. But if one day one of my girls says she wants to play football, I will support her. It’s their decision and all I want is to help them find happiness’.

Most common types of cancer

Cancer is a universal disease, present in all human ethnicities, with distribution and frequency determined by environmental and social factors in each region of the planet. Generally speaking, skin cancer, or melanoma, is the most common of all cancers. Skin cancer results from over exposure to the sun. It initially appears as skin flaking and evolves into an ulcer. It has however a low level of aggression and is easily treated with surgical removal. Breast cancer is next in incidence with 99% of cases affecting women and showing low mortality rates in developed countries. Lung cancer hits both men and women and is the neoplastic disease that best responds to prevention. Prostate cancer mostly occurs in men over the age of 40 and has excellent prognostic results at present; it has low aggressive rates and is easily treated. Of the digestive

system, the stomach presents the most overall incidence, although in developed countries there is a higher incidence in the colon and rectum. Cancer of the uterus is most frequent in developing countries due to precarious life conditions. However, with the introduction of vaccination of young women against viruses that promote the disease, its incidence will decrease. Other kinds of neoplasm occur with similar frequency in all regions of the planet. The best and most effective preventative approach is to consider the general well-being at an individual level. This must take into consideration the individual’s personal environment and lifestyle, which are specific, non-transferable and not to be copied by anybody. our bodies, the skin. The adoption of a balanced and varied diet, with both meat and vegetables, is a healthy habit that can diminish the onset of oncologic processes. Avoiding the consumption of charred food, smoking tobacco and drinking alcohol in moderation are all effective behaviours in the prevention of cancers. Something that revolutionized the prevention of diseases in general and cancer in particular in the last two decades was the fight against prejudices and myths around the subject. Open discussions combined with technological developments and effective therapeutic models have helped to dispel fears surrounding cancer. People have started to seek diagnosis more frequently and thus detect the disease at earlier stages, which has led to a reduction in mortality rates. This is the essence of prevention. www.adrianachiarimagazine.net

Hello traveller. If you’re planning things to do in Dubai, you will be surprised to discover that everything there has gigantic proportions. Many of the attractions are among the world’s largest (and that includes buildings and even a choreographed water show). This tourist destination has been catching the attention of travellers in the last few years and that attention is well deserved. Built in the middle of the desert, the city in the United Arab Emirates has now become a symbol for technology and futuristic sceneries. To find out how this transformation took place, a visit to the Dubai Museum is a must. With many interactive attractions, the museum tells the history of the region, the culture of the Bedouins that used to inhabit the region as well as the past of the city since well before the discovery of oil in the 1950’s. The museum is located at the Al Fahidi Fortress, built in 1787, and has an area dedicated to archeological excavations, where you will see some 3,000 year old artefacts. After a brief overview of Dubai’s past, it is time to get to know the city’s main attraction; the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building. With a height of 828 metres and 160 floors, the building

Next stop is one of the city’s landmarks: the Burj Al Arab Hotel, which prides itself on being the only seven-star hotel in the world- although it is officially classified as a five star. The structure resembling a boat sail was erected on an artificial island connected by a bridge to Jumeirah Beach. In order to take a close look at the building, book a table in one of its restaurants: the luxurious experience will be expensive, but still much less c ostly than staying at the hotel itself. If you are not fussed with exploring the Burj Al Arab, you

can enjoy a great view of the hotel while diving into the sea waters of Jumeriah Beach. After that, it is a good idea to save one night of your stay to experience a desert safari complete with dinner. Many tour agencies offer this experience (and it is possible to check a few options on this page). Although very touristy, the tour will be a good way to understand more about the culture of the region. Normally the tour operators pick up the tourists from the hotel where they are staying and take them on a 4x4 vehicle through the desert to a Bedouin camp. Once there, the guests are offered a dinner prepared especially for the occasion, complete with a show of typical dances. Dubai also has many alternatives for those who prefer the waters to the desert sands. The famous Wild Wadi water park at the Jumeriah Beach Hotel is one of these. The park was inspired by a local legend and is a perfect place to freshen up in the city’s summer. Another attraction is the Aquaventure park, located at the Atlantis The Palm resort, where visitors can also visit a giant aquarium or swim with dolphins at Dolphin Bay. The resort is

located in one of the islands of The Palm, the artificial archipelago built in the shape of a palm tree. Besides all these exciting attractions, Dubai also offers activities very typical to the Arab world, like the many street markets or souks. Not to be missed, a visit to the Spice Market will introduce visitors to the many spices and flavours from the local cuisine, while the Gold Market concentrates on the sale of jewellery and the Bur Dubai Market is a perfect place to buy souvenirs and local handicrafts. Try to save a day to explore areas around Dubai Creek, a canal that crosses the city. The crossing is made on board an abra, a wooden boat typical of the region. Besides being a beautiful tour, the Deira District on the other side of the canal is an area that deserves to be fully explored by the visitor. Lastly, you can complement your stay in Dubai with a day tour to Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. Less than two hours away from Dubai, the city offers a good alternative to those wishing to know a bit more of the life in the region apart from the exuberance of Dubai.

Have a great

Trip!!!

was opened in 2010 and has, ever since, been attracting tourists from all over the world who want to climb it for a view of the city. Some tours will complement the experience by offering an afternoon tea at the very top of the building. Right next to the tower, at the Dubai Mall, you can visit Dubai Fountains, considered the world’s greatest choreographed water show. The show takes place daily at different times of the day in an artificial lake by the shopping mall. During the show the water can reach a height of 140 metres and is accompanied by music and lighting created especially for the event.

7 ESSENTIAL BRUSHES FOR YOUR MAKEUP BAG

T

Roseane Schekinah Makeup Artist

The November issue will be the last one of the year and to close the year with a splash I have some super tips for you: seven essential brushes you must have in your makeup bag. 1. Foundation Brush: these come in several different versions used to accomplish different finishing results, depending on your type of skin. The main ones are: Cat’s tongue - a traditional type that gives the skin more coverage and results in a heavier effect. Duo-fibre - the most versatile one, gives a natural and homogeneous effect at the time of application, since it consists of two different types of bristles; natural and synthetic ones. The synthetic bristles deposit the product and the natural ones will shade it. The result is a lighter skin effect. Kabuki - this celebrated brush will render wonderful results if used correctly. It gives an airbrushed effect finish. If you do not use it correctly, these tend to leave the skin more laden since their bristles are too dense. Sponges - these are for application and removal of any product excesses and need to be very soft. The end result is perfect, more natural and easier to handle. 2. Corrective Brush: ethis is a smaller, slimmer version of the Cat’s tongue foundation brush. Use to apply the product with precision, but for shading, it is better to use the tip of your finger or a sponge.

46

3.Eyeshadow Brush: flat shaped with natural bristles, it is ideal for applying eye shadow on the eyelids. The firmer the bristles are the more precision and colour intensity you’ll get. So, avoid very soft ones unless all you wish is to lend a subtle colour tone to your eyes.

4. Powder Brush: thick brush, full, soft and with natural bristles to ensure that they will not scratch the foundation applied previously. Because of its shape, it will not carry too much of the product. A common mistake in make-up is to make the face cakey with too much powder. Apply lightly, removing any excesses with light taps before application.

5. Blush Brush, bronzer and illuminator: has fewer bristles than a powder brush. They also have longer bristles to accomplish a perfect finish and prevent the make-up previously applied from ending up being removed.

6. Shading Brush: the little darling of us all… the powerful and miraculous one. It has natural bristles with a rounded tip format, fat and soft. Its function is to highlight the concave shape and blend the transition between colours. With firmer bristles you get a more marked concave but not so much shading. With the softer ones, you will manage to overlap colours and with patience you’ll manage to mark and shade at the same time.

7. Outlining Brush: small, very slim and angle shaped. For better results, this brush needs to be very slim and have a precise cut. Multifunctional, it will outline the eyes on the upper and lower eyelids, will contour the lips and do the finishing.

So, girls, these are my tips. I hope my tips have helped you throughout the year. See you again in the new year! 47

BUSINESS

How is your business? Lenne Moghadari Business Consultant

A brand goes well beyond the description of your product. A brand is the kind of service you offer your client and how this is provided. Establish quality from the very beginning regardless of whether the service is delivered by you or by an employee of yours. A brand is your work system, your behaviour, your pricing and the quality of the service you offer to everyone who requires your product.

W

When we set off on that long road journey to start a business, we invest much more than monetary funds. We invest time, knowledge and work, often we sacrifice our personal lives, our family and friends. We do research, study the market field and dedicate all our hopes to a business that will bring us the dreamed-of financial stability. Once the business is up and running, doing well and in accordance with all the norms, the moment comes to expand it. So, how to proceed? How to guarantee the growth of your business? Follow my basic tips below and you will not fail.

2. Dedicate the right amount of time for your business in order to be productive: To work 24 hours a day and 7 days a week will not necessarily be reflected as success for your company. It’s important to use your time in a clever and conscious way, without embarking on various activities at the same time and thus not being able to finish any of them. Plan your time in a coherent way, both for the business and the family. Have a diary with a timetable so that all business meetings are timed. There is nothing more frustrating in the world of business than time wasting. Friends are friends and need to be kept apart from business. And time is money, there’s truth in the saying.

1. Establish a brand: It does not matter the size of your company, or how well established your brand is and the directness of the relationship between you and your client. 50

3. Choose your partnership responsibly Partnership is a fundamental form of growth. Do not tie yourself to partnerships for the sake of quantity alone; a good partnership will bring benefits for both associated sides. If your partner does not think and do the best for the company, look for another one. Quality is always better than quantity.

statistics show that 86% of clients will come back to a service that provides them with a good experience. A returning client will also recommend your service to their friends. If you think that a single person will know at least another 202 people, you begin to notice the importance of a happy client. One that will return many times for your services. Look after your clients!

4. Structure If you started your business with a weak structure and little capital, there is still time to change things and guarantee its success. An enterprise with weak capital and structure, unregistered, with poor accountancy, lacking focus, governance or plan of how to treat its clients is a company that is already in danger of dying. In reality it is little more than a joke; you are simply pretending to be an entrepreneur and certainly will soon enter the ‘two-year list’- the time frame in which most businesses fail. To win these important phases, you must establish a business plan and, every month, put aside a percentage in order to have something to fall back on in case of problems. Do not become part of the statistics, as many entrepreneurs do.

7. Quality and determination Product and service quality is essential for a company to survive and thrive. With quality in mind, use products that you would trust to buy for your own family. Be determined and do not allow yourself to get demotivated by everyday problems. Problems and challenges are part and parcel of any business. What will determine the success of your business is the way that you deal with these problems. Do not get defeated by the ‘I want it now’ mentality. In the business world nothing happens immediately. Respect time, be patient, be honest and do not be afraid of the work and challenges that will come your way. Conclusion: Apologies if you thought that you would read about easy formulas that would make all your problems fade away. Having a business means many sleepless nights spent planning and studying, dealing with cost assessments and worrying about rent payments, staff and tax payments, etc. Fairy tales do not work. Have your feet planted firmly on the ground so that you will not wake up one day and realise that you have not moved an inch. Do not allow your life to be overtaken by frustrations and disappointments, and then end up blaming all those around you.

5. Training Both you as an entrepreneur and your staff must be constantly updating, recycling yourselves and constantly learning. The more training available to all involved in your company, the more able your business will be to deal with modern technologies and techniques. Become an expert in whatever you do. Education does not only change us as people but will also open business opportunities. Do not confuse formal education with self-help training that promises things that not even its defenders have achieved. Before you unnecessarily invest your money, ask yourself how qualified is the course instructor? Remind yourself: there is no magical formula to achieve success. A lot of studying and knowledge are essential. Get training!

Everything in life is a question of choices. You can choose your friends, your staff, partners, husband (or wife), business, choose to remain silent, to be honest, not to cheat; choose strong moral standards. Whatever you choose for your life will get back to you. Your professional and personal lives are entirely your own responsibility. No one is born to be an entrepreneur- but, unfortunately, this false idea circulates in social media and results in many people’s disappointment. Take your business seriously, have rules and work seriously. By doing so, you will grow and succeed in the business world.

6. Do not sit and wait for your clients - be proactive! It is very important to recognize that it doesn’t matter how experienced you are in your area or talented in what you do, a good relationship between you and your clients is fundamental. Regardless of the number of years’ experience you have in the service that you provide, 51

MYTHS AND TRUTHS ABOUT MALE INFERTILITY

F

Dr Vania Martins Gynaecologist

For a long time, male infertility used to be seen as a taboo. In the past, male identity was strongly based on the man’s role as a provider and that, coupled with the cultural tract of machismo, helped place the weight of infertility squarely on the woman’s side. It was inadmissible to think that men were not capable of generating life; and science itself was not equipped to diagnose male infertility and to deal with this paradigm. Now with the advance in the sciences and the advent of reproductive medicine, we know the reality is very different. Infertility affects about 20% of the world population, and its causing factors, contrary to most beliefs, are divided equally between men and women. Furthermore, 30% of all cases are due to factors influenced by both partners. MYTHS AND TRUTHS ABOUT MALE INFERTILITY:

photo:Shutterstock

- Fertility and virility are linked. Myth: it is possible to have an active and satisfactory sex life (good erection and ejaculation), and still have problems that prevent pregnancy, like low quantity of sperm per ejaculation. - I have had children before. So, my wife is the cause of the problem. Myth: the patient’s semen can suffer alterations that can prevent or render pregnancy more difficult. Many factors can cause a decrease in fertility, like varicocele, the use of anabolic steroids,

cancer treatments (radio and chemotherapy) and type of work (motorcyclists, chefs, hairdressers, cleaners). - Age interferes with fertility. Truth: from age 40 a decrease in the sperm count is common. Sperm DNA changes a lot from age 55 with an increased risk of genetic material (DNA) mutation and the chance of generating mal-formed foetuses. - Alcohol and drugs can cause infertility. Truth: regular use of alcohol (more than 2 glasses of wine per week) as well as the use of recreational drugs like cocaine, heroin, cannabis and ecstasy can lead to a decrease in fertility. - Using the laptop on the lap can contribute to infertility. Truth: the heat generated by the laptop on the crotch region can affect the production of sperm. - Smoking can be a factor in infertility. Truth: Sperm quality and mobility

decrease even though the quantity remains stable.

(without tail or top). These alterations make conception more unlikely.

- Hair loss treatment drugs can interfere with fertility. Truth: Certain medication drugs can reduce male fertility, even in small doses. The suspension of such drugs two or three months prior to impregnation attempts can help with conception.

- Obesity can decrease fertility. Truth: A clinical study in Madrid revealed that obese men (BMI 30 or higher) have 30% fewer sperm cells per ejaculation compared to men of a medium BMI of 24.

- The side effects of anabolic steroids disappear once the man stops using them. Truth: Men who try to gain muscular mass through the use of steroids put themselves at risk of having their reproductive capability diminished as well as developing erectile problems. - Exposure to high temperatures can diminish fertility. Truth: men who work exposed to high temperatures like, for instance, in greenhouses and industrial kitchens, have a greater risk of producing sperm with lower mobility or abnormal shape

55

TIPS: - A healthy life style combining a balanced diet and physical exercise can help men keep their reproductive health for longer and, in some cases, even recover part of the fertility lost throughout the years. - Have yourself tested prior to marriage or a relationship and seek treatment if necessary. A simple examination called a spermogram can give a correct diagnosis. - Seek help from a human reproductive specialist after unsuccessful pregnancy attempts.

HAVE YOU HEARD OF INDIVIDUAL VOLUNTARY AGREEMENT IVA?

She is involved in Economics, Finance, Insolvency and is fascinated by the world of Public Relations and Criminology Sciences. HAVE YOU HEARD OF INDIVIDUAL VOLUNTARY AGREEMENT (IVA)? A licensed insolvency administrator negotiates a legal agreement between you and your creditors, allowing you to pay your debts according to your actual means and for a fixed period of time, which is normally 5 years. WHAT DEBTS CAN BE INCLUDED IN AN IVA? Normally any debts not covered by a guarantee can be included in an IVA. DEBTS THAT CAN BE INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO: . Credit cards

. Personal loans . Store card . Bank overdrafts . Balances due after repossession of house or vehicle . Business loans for which the client is personally responsible . Debts with HMRC DEBTS THAT CANNOT BE INCLUDED . Guaranteed debts such as mortgages and other guaranteed loans . Rent with option of buying . Rent and Council tax in arrears (unless it relates to a previous property) . Student loan repayments . Any fees and fines from criminal activities . Alimony payments in arrears . Tax credits or benefits received unduly CAN I KEEP SOME OF MY DEBTS OUTSIDE THE IVA? No. you cannot favour one creditor above another. All your non-guaranteed debts, including loans, credit cards, shop cards and bank overdrafts and 58

Bianca Edwards Businesswoman and Business Administrator even old utilities bills (like water and electricity) have to be included in the IVA. If you continue to have credit outside of the IVA, it may not work and there could be a risk of bankruptcy. It is important that you are honest with the creditors because, after all, they will be writing off a good part of your debt. HOW MUCH WILL I PAY EACH MONTH? You will only pay what you can afford each month. We will help you calculate this total when we analyse your income and expenses. Basically, you will pay what is known as ‘available income’, which is the total that is left after you have paid all your necessary expenses, so long as these are essential and reasonable. Creditors will have limits in relation to what they can accept as expenses because they will receive less from you if you keep over-spending with your usual expenses. But we will analyse these expenses with your monthly budgetary plan.

LIFE BALANCE

A return to the feminine essence: Rescuing the inner child

‘Inside every adult lingers a child - an eternal child, something that is always about to be, that is never complete and that constantly asks for attention and education. This is the part of the human personality that wishes to get developed and complete’ Carl Gustav Jung, Swiss psychiatrist (1875-1961)

Magda Lizbir Gomes Terapeuta Holística When the development of a child is interrupted, when their feelings are repressed, especially anger, sorrow, lack of love and care, the person becomes an adult with an angry and sorry inner child. In order to grow and survive these wounds, the child will develop defence mechanisms to carry on with their lives. Find out which role your inner child has adopted, through the behaviour traits investigated by John Bradshaw in Home Coming.

We all were, at some time, hurt in some way. And, since we are humans, in the majority of cases, we do not recognize the wound, and even if we do, we don’t know how to heal it.

Sources: Coming Home - John Bradshaw Laws of Healing - Bert Hellinger

The return to our feminine essence is not possible without first healing our past.

Co-dependence: This is the loss of identity. To be co-dependent is to lose contact with one’s own feelings, needs and desires. These are people whose identities depend on something outside of themselves. Co-dependency is born and grows in an unhealthy family environment, like, for instance, where one of its members suffers from alcoholism. In this family all members will become dependents of this person’s alcoholism, they will become super vigilant and be constantly in a state of alert and tension and lose contact with their internal characteristics and their own feelings.

60

Emptiness, apathy and depression: The hurt child can also contaminate the adult with a chronic depression, felt as an emptiness. Depression is caused by the fact that the child has to adapt to a false self to the detriment of the true self. When the person loses sight of their authentic self, they lose touch with their real feelings, needs and desires, which is replaced by the feelings demanded by the false self.

Magic beliefs: Magic is the belief that certain words, gestures or behaviours can alter reality. Normally, negligent or abusive parents reinforce the magical thought in their children. For example, if you tell your child they are responsible for the feelings of others, you are teaching them magical thought. Some common phrases in this respect are: ‘You are killing your mother’, ‘See what you’ve done- your mother is worried’, ‘Are you happy now? Your made your father angry’. Another form of magical thought is the famous phrase: ‘I know what you’re thinking’. For the child it is natural to think magically.

Narcissistic disturbance: Every child needs to be loved and accepted unconditionally by their parents or the person who looks after them; without this mirror the child does not have the means of knowing who they are. We need to know that we are important, that we are taken seriously and that each part of us is deserving of love and acceptance by the people we trust. This is the healthy narcissistic way for the child. If we are deprived of these notions, the notion of the self is damaged.

61

www.adrianachiarimagazine.net

Lack of trust: When a child cannot trust those looking after them, it will then develop a deep feeling of mistrust, as if the world were a dangerous, hostile and unpredictable place. A mania for control then develops into a habit, and a habit of creating problems in relationships. Intimacy is not possible with a person who cannot trust others. Intimacy demands acceptance of partners as they are.

Repetitive behaviour: All trauma and grief that were not expressed or resolved get frozen and, since they cannot be expressed in a natural and healthy manner, they will then manifest themselves through abnormal behaviour. Repetition is one of the most devastating acts of sabotage committed by the inner child. There are two forms of repetition; internal and external. In the first one, the adult repeats the acts of violence or the same behaviours that they experienced from those who looked after them, for instance, they put into practice the rules created by their parents. They do or say things to their children that they otherwise would not. Internal repetition consists of repeating on oneself violence from the past. We punish ourselves like we were punished in our childhood, for instance, by chastising ourselves when we make a mistake by saying things like: You idiot, how come you’re so stupid?

Aggressive behaviours: We can infer that the wounded inner child is responsible for a great part of the violence that exists in the world, because it is the result of the unresolved violence, sorrows and pain from childhood. An impotent and hurt child grows to become an aggressive adult. To better understand this, it is necessary to understand that there are many forms of violence and mistreatment.

62

Intimacy disturbances: Many child adults move constantly between fear of abandonment and the fear of being completely dominated. Some isolate themselves from fear of being absorbed by others. Some resist ending abusive relationships for fear of being alone. In order to believe that they are loved, the wounded child behaves in the way they believe they should. A false self develops through time and gets reinforced by family and cultural sex roles. With time, the false self takes over and become seen as the true one. It is impossible to have intimacy without a solid notion of the self. How can we share ourselves with someone, if we do not really know who we are?

Addictive and compulsive behaviour: The wounded child that lives in the adult is the main cause of addictions and addictive behaviours. Addictions are forms of pathological relationships that cause some form of temperament alterations, with consequences that may represent life risks. Addictive activities can include work, shopping, gambling, sex and religion. In reality any activity can be used to mask feelings. Thinking is also a form of avoiding feelings. All addictions have a component of thought, which is the creator of obsessions.

Thought distortion: Children think in absolute terms. This characteristic of the child’s thought manifests itself with the adoption of extreme reasoning- it’s all or nothing; If you don’t love me then, you hate me. There is no middle ground. If my father abandoned me, all men will abandon me. Children are illogical: ‘I feel a certain way, so it must be like this’, ‘If I feel guilty, I must be a bad person’. The child personalises everything: ‘If mummy doesn’t have time for me it’s because I’m not good’.

HOME AND DECORATION

Transforming damaged objects into useful things for your house Sandra Rocha Griffiths Plastic Artist

Recycling is also to re-use something for a similar function. What I propose here is to find a new role for an object that has reached the end of its useful life. In the process you will save money by re-using objects to decorate your house. Use your creativity to transform a simple broken chair into a beautiful and useful object in the rustic vintage style. HOW TO DO IT

needed Material

photo: Natalya Cardoso

chair • a broken ks o • some ho s • screw e • PVA glu er p a p d n sa • h • varnis l saw or manua • electric

Disassemble the chair and separate all its parts; if necessary, saw it to a desired size. Glue the first part vertically to the upper part. Screw the other two parts horizontally. After gluing and screw fixing all the parts, sand it with care according to the natural woodgrain, so as to accomplish a rustic style. After that, screw the hooks onto the lower part or sides. Now you just need to fix it to your bathroom wall and use it to display decorative objects, hold towels, etc.

STYLE

The best coat for your body shape

R

Thaize de Oliveira Image Consultant

Research results have pointed out that winter is the season when people dress most elegantly. With that in mind, we have a few tips for when you go winter shopping. Shall we start? Which shape do you identify with?

TRIANGLE Your hips are broader than your shoulders. If you have this body shape you can highlight the shoulder region with the addition of details like buttons, embroidery and rhinestones. The coat can be slightly waisted, but not to excess as this could increase the volume in the hip area; not a desired effect.

OVAL This body shape shows more volume in the abdominal area. In this case you have to be extra careful with buttons. Some designs have large buttons which attract attention to the abdominal region. Also, avoid using belts, especially those in contrasting colours. If the coat has a fitted shape around the waist, it will highlight your waist.

HOURGLASS Your shoulders and hips are in balance with a marked waistline. You need to be careful how fitted on the waist your coat is because if it is too tight it will accentuate your hips and shoulders. 70

For those with this physical shape, the best choice is a coat in dark colours, with no details like buttons, embroidery, ruffles, prints or mixed colours at shoulder height. The more discreet the better. It can be slightly waisted and if your hips present some volume even better as it will help create balance between your shoulders and hips.

RECTANGULAR Your shoulders, waist and hips have similar proportions. In this case you may use colours and details with abandon. You may also wear a belt, preferably in the same colour as the coat. Some very important considerations:

PHOto: Natalya Cardoso

Bright details and light colours will create an illusion of volume. Long coats will shorten your leg and make you appear shorter. If you are tall, you may then wear long coats without any problem. If you are slim, you may use details like rhinestones, prints and embroidery.

Meet our Plastic Surgeon, Dr Marcos Sforza

‘Everyday in my clinic, I see patients that had their lives improved.

A

Marília Maciel Journalist

As a child of a doctor, he developed an interest for plastic surgery from an early age. At 13, during summer holidays, he spotted his mother reading Right to Beauty, a book by Ivo Pitanguy. Being a curious child, he started reading the book and got surprised and enthralled by the story of the surgeon and professor who spent his life trying to explain that feeling good about oneself can be strongly influenced by the way that one sees himself. Thereby everybody should have the right to aspire, without qualms, for beauty not only internal but also external. Besides that, to be able to like the person you see reflected on the mirror in the morning can give strength necessary to face a difficult situation or a hard day. ‘I learned that the right to beauty has nothing to do with exaggerated notions of being superficial and, on the contrary, can be part of the character building process in which one can indeed try and improve all aspects of their being’, says Dr Sforza. At age 17 he joined the medicine

faculty at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, where he trained to be a doctor. After that he attended a two years’ General Surgery residency and followed that with another three years’ Cosmetic Surgery residency at Santa Casa da Misericordia in Rio de Janeiro under the supervision of Ivo Pitanguy. The dream had become true. ‘About professor Pitanguy, just like Pele, Freud and Nietzsche, one can only say that there will never be anyone like him; no other surgeon will ever get close to his talent and wisdom. He was a man of a greater stature, an educator like no other and a visionary’, concludes Dr Sforza. Nowadays cosmetic surgery is common practice anywhere in the world, and Ivo Pitanguy had a crucial role in this. He showed that there are different ways a person can attain personal satisfaction.‘Everyday, in my clinic, I see patients that had their lives improved. It may be an abdomen that had lost its shape after childbearing or breasts that were too big and caused backache or simply the absence of natural looking breasts that made women feel less feminine. Nowadays I do 81

not save as many lives, literally speaking, as when I was a general clinician, but I certainly help many people to feel better about themselves’, adds Dr Sforza. Two years after he finished his residency, he came to the UK to work in a hospital for three months. After that he became the director of the largest private cosmetic surgery hospital in England for seven years. He never went back to Brazil. Nowadays, Dr Marcos Sforza is one of the most sought-after surgeons for conducting trainings and speaking at international conferences, with an average of more than thirty international talks every year. In the last few years he has published more than forty scientific papers about new plastic surgery techniques and technologies. Besides that, he is the only Brazilian surgeon trained by Professor Ivo Pitanguy with a licence to practise in the UK. He has a record of more than five thousand plastic surgeries performed in England and his consultations include 3D simulations in which the patient can see the results in virtual reality. www.adrianachiarimagazine.net

Have you heard of Bell’s Palsy?

B

factors that increase the chances of facial paralysis occurring: genetic predisposition, earache, flu and colds, situations of great stress, sudden changes of temperature, viruses that can affect the facial nerves (common herpes and varicella zoster viruses), infectious mononucleosis (kissing disease) and rubella virus, among other factors. But the truth is that the causes of this pathology are not really known.

Bell’s Palsy, also known as Idiopathic Facial Paralysis, is a more common complaint than we can imagine. Many of us know of a neighbour, a friend or family member who woke up one day with their face paralysed without any apparent reason. For example, in the US the incidence of Bell’s Palsy is, on average, 30 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, with an estimated 40 thousand people affected each year. A considerable figure that compels us to discuss this disease.

Bell’s Palsy diagnosis is normally made in a clinical way and treatment includes the use of anti-viral and corticosteroids and a lot of physiotherapy. During physiotherapy sessions the patient is required to perform a number of facial mimics, exercises and stretching of the facial muscles. Cryotherapy and even electrotherapy (gentle electric shock treatment) are also forms of treatment. In clinical practice excellent results have been attained with the use of electrotherapy alongside other therapeutic techniques. It is important that patients seek the help of a physiotherapist as soon as the diagnosis is made. The earlier the exercises start the better. The duration of treatments varies from case to case as it is dependent on various factors.

When one notices symptoms of facial paralysis: drooping mouth and eyelids, difficulty in speaking, eating and smiling, it is common for people to confuse them with those of a stroke. Unlike a stroke (a vascular accident in which an alteration to the blood flow to the brain occurs), Bell’s palsy does not present neurological alterations. This type of paralysis was the one that affected actress Angelina Jolie after her separation in September 2016. It can affect men and women of all ages; however, it is more common during infancy and adolescence. Literature urges us to be more attentive to 82

Visagism, the four temperaments

N

New UN demographic projections for world population (2017) show that world population has reached 7.6 billion. Still every single one of these individuals is, physically and psychologically speaking, unique. In order to better understand and know the character of each person through their physical traits, Hippocrates, the father of Medicine (400 BC), created the theory of the four temperaments or humours, according to which, life is maintained with a balance of the four humours: blood, phlegm, yellow bile and black bile; proceeding from, respectively, the heart, the respiratory system, liver and gall bladder. Each of these humours has different qualities: blood is warm and humid; phlegm is cold and humid; yellow bile, warm and dry; black bile cold and dry.

person emotio nally, and can change their behaviour. A positive image highlights the best aspects of the personality, and enhances self-esteem. The study of the four temperaments will help people to understand why they behave the way they do, and what they can do with regard to the negative aspects of their personality.

According to the natural predominance of one of these humours in the constitution of the individuals we have the different psychological types: sanguine, phlegmatic, choleric and melancholic. Based on this foundation, Visagism studies the humours to build a personal image that will transform the

Keep in mind that all methods of personality evaluation are imprecise because they are generalisations. Besides the temperaments, there are other evaluation tools that need to be considered in a consultation, such as identification of skin colour and facial shape. In “Visagismo Integrado,

The temperament explains our behaviour, but must not be used as an excuse for it. Being part of our human nature, it needs to be controlled. It is true that the basic temperament hardly ever changes. Its negative aspects, however, can be disciplined. The initiative of knowing the positive and negative points of our temperament will help us to better understand ourselves and others.

Jacy Maryoh Visagist identidade, estilo e beleza (Integrated Visagism- Identity, style and beauty), Philip Hallawell explains that everyone has characteristics of all four categories, albeit to different degrees. These charactheristics have positive aspects, known as strengths, and negative ones, know as weaknesses. There are many people who appear to belong to a single category, and others who seem to move between two or three types. There are also those who have their strengths concentrated in one category and their weaknesses in another. These charactheristics can still manifest themselves in the person as a whole or limit themselves to certain areas, ending up with the person having only certain aspects of each type. Recognizing the characteristics of each temperament, one is able to harmonize unilateral tendencies and cultivate the necessary balance for a healthy bio-psychological life.

Domestic Violence and the Silence of Society

F

Fear of negative exposure in front of family and society makes victims of violence delay speaking out and seeking help. All over the world levels of domestic and familial violence are increasing considerably. The crime, in the majority of cases, is committed by relatives and people close to the victim. Older people, children and men speak out and seek help daily, but the highest number of victims are women. According to authorities, the majority of cases of aggression take place between married couples. Victims of physical and psychological violence fear some kind of reprisal from society or some sort of negative exposure in the family environment and thus delay reporting violence. They suffer in silence and put their lives at risk. Not reporting is allowing the opportunity for the act to recur. To psychologist Ana Laura Dalagnol, the main causes

that lead to abuse are alcoholism, work related stress, lack of respect and anger derived from failures and frustrations. Except in cases of mental crimes, violence can be interpreted as a way to correct what dialogue did not manage to solve. Recently a case in the UK attracted much media attention and had a great impact. A doctor resident in the town of Eastling called a helpline and reported that one of his patients, a man in his sixties, was suffering physical abuse from his wife. The man said that he felt embarrassed with the situation. The case started to become intolerable when the attacks started to leave physical marks that were difficult to hide. Concerned work colleagues started to be suspicious of the frequent falls that the man used to say happened to him and decided to inform the company’s 90

Dheyse Carbonera Journalist

HR department. Dr Joseph Cardich asked for a few tests and talked to the man. After a while he confirmed what the doctor already suspected. The patient had never fallen down the stairs; he was another victim of domestic violence; his wife had been abusing him for more than two years. The doctor then brought the case to the authorities. Domestic violence must be fought and those practising it must be punished. It is the least we can do when we hear about such cases. ‘If you are a victim or know of anyone who is, report it, do not wait for the worst to happen’, urged Dr Cardich in an interview with a local radio station. In England, there is a direct line so victims can seek help and psychological post aggression support to minimize their traumas. National Domestic Violence Helpline in England: 0808 2000 247

Misogyny

discrimination against women

Ana Cardoso Journalist

E

Each time a woman is treated as someone inferior, an object or an animal, this is the result of misogyny, discrimination against women. Since the Code of Hammurabi appeared in 1776 BC, the life of a woman has been considered to be worth less than that of a man.

In Sapiens, author Yuval Noah Harari cites a paragraph of that document that leaves no doubt about this: ‘The life of a common woman is worth 30 silver shekels and that of a female slave, 20 silver shekels, whereas the eye of a common man is worth 60 silver shekels.’ You can see how female lives have been valued since the dawn of agriculture. At that time when humans stopped being hunter/ gatherers and favoured agriculture, they started to define gender roles more clearly: men go out and adventure while women plant, cook, procreate and obey. Moving fast forward to the present day, in the arts, there is a maxim that says ‘it is easier for a woman to enter a museum naked’. This is referring to the Metropolitan Museum, where less than 3% of all artists are women, but 83% of nudes are feminine. Both the phrase and the numbers relate to the year 92

1984, but since then little has changed. Cinema, advertising and in particular pornography have often represented women in a subjugated, humiliated and servile role. This decreases our self-esteem as women while imprinting invisible signs on society of what it is ‘to be a woman’. Our ‘femininity’ is emphasized in order to make us weak and vulnerable. Australian researcher Raewyn Connell explains that from the 50’s, with soldiers were coming back from the war, women were then relegated to the kitchen and childcare, and expected to be perfect. This was necessary so that men could reaffirm their masculine hegemony, in other words, to show who is in charge. As a reflection: I strongly recommend you watch the documentary The Mask You Live In and the series Mad Men and Handmaid’s Tale.

Other things people will also believe in: • Competitions that promise a free iPhone to all those who fill in a form • becoming wealthy by selling something that nobody wants to buy • promises of easy earnings from working only two hours a day in your own home • winning the lottery as the best way of getting rich • getting rich by buying a franchise for £5K • losing weight with the fashionable diet of the season • promises of investment earnings greater than any other option available • self-help, so long as the help comes in the form of someone telling you what to do.

T

The easiest way. Where does the desire to get everything easily come from? I always wonder… ‘why do people seek magic formulas to sort out their issues?’ Why do we always want the easier way out? Obviously, nobody wants to tread a path of difficulties, but you must not think that all things are easy and will simply fall into your lap. I say this because I notice a repeating pattern with people searching for easy way outs. In the majority of cases, they are living through delicate emotional moments and choose to believe that the solution to their issues lies beyond them and believe in an easy and effortless magical solution.

We need to change the belief that things can be obtained easily, that there are easy earnings to be had, that life can be easy. Not everything needs to be difficult, but as popular knowledge states, when something is ‘too good to be true’ then it probably is! I am a firm believer in the power of work and good relationships, in which nothing replaces good education, effort, dedication and the search for one’s objectives.

People who believe in, for instance, an email message from a Nigerian prince who just happened to know that you were short of money and promises you large sums of money in exchange for some personal data. 94
