EvaPope Actress

Style Exclusive

Popular actress, Eva Pope, has many credits to her name, including Coronation Street, Bad Girls, Peak Practice and most recently, three years as Headmistress at Waterloo Road.

Since leaving the BBC series earlier this year, the talented actress has found plenty to occupy her time, including a starring role in feature film ‘Being Sold’, which is coming soon to cinemas nationwide. FILMING: Eva on the set of Being Sold

‘Being sold’ is an innovative Manchester-based comedy drama, which was shot in just two days. the film also stars many well-known actors and celebrities including christopher Dane, Lee Boardman (coronation st), Lesley Joseph (Birds of a Feather), John thomson (cold Feet), roy Walker (catchphrase), Gordon Burns (BBc News), Justin Moorhouse (Key 103) and Lucy Porter (comedian). I recently caught up with eva, to find out more about ‘Being sold’ and life after Waterloo road. How did you get involved in ‘Being sold’? I was asked by the director, Phil Hawkins and the producer, Ben Swift. I said yes, because the film is giving a share of the profits to Amnesty International, which is such as worthwhile cause. And I had the two days free, so I thought ‘why not’!

made redundant from work, he has no money and they are going through a real financial crisis. His wife’s going out to work and leaving him in a state of depression everyday. And that’s when he comes up with the idea of selling himself on the internet… to the highest bidder!

When I heard they were shooting the entire film in just two days, I thought it sounded like something I had to be part of. It’s something that could change the face of filmmaking in England.

Who do you play in the film? I play Lara, John’s long-suffering wife. It’s not really a comedy role, but it’s a nice role. She can see what a ridiculous situation John’s created, whereas no-one else can. She’s the one with her feet on the ground, whilst everyone else in the film is too excited at the idea of John selling himself. He can’t see what it will do to their relationship and to their kids, but she can.

What is the film about? It’s a comedy, with the tagline ‘What is a human life worth?’, about a guy called John Foster, who sells himself on Ebay. He’s been 6

talented and has achieved so much in his career already. Why did you decide to move on from Waterloo road? It was a mutual decision; both Shed Productions and I thought that my character, Rachel had seen her course. They had done as much as they could with Rachel and from my point of view she was getting quite twodimensional. She was set up as this ‘hero’, so there wasn’t much to fall back on, as she didn’t have a family as such, or anything outside of the school. And also, I don’t like staying on things too long. I think Rachel had her fill, storyline-wise. I think Amanda Burton is great as the new Waterloo Road

What was it like filming a feature film in just two days? It was kind of mad really. I’ve never done anything like it. Everyone else had rehearsals beforehand, but I was working on something else and couldn’t get to the rehearsals. I literally walked in on the first day and had to go straight into a scene. It was filmed twice and that was it! And it was a very long scene, so I just had to make it up! But I really love improvisation and working in the moment, so I guess I was a perfect candidate. It was scary, but quite exhilarating! What were the cast & crew like? Everyone was great, I gelled with the whole team straight away. Phil, the director is so inspirational. He’s a young guy, but really

You have a teenage daughter, elise, is she catching the acting bug? She’s been in schoolplays ever since she was little. She’s really good, but I don’t think she’s interested in carrying it on and actually I’m quite glad! Only because I know how hard it is and I’m lucky compared to the majority. It’s a really hard business to be in and the majority of actors just don’t get work. She’s also extremely brainy so the world’s going to be her oyster I hope. What are your ambitions for the future? I’m still working on getting my own projects

Headmistress. I do miss everybody from Waterloo Road though. Having been there for three years, they felt like family, especially the kids! Although, we do keep in touch. What else have you been up to since leaving the series? I’ve never done so many diverse things in my life, as I’m doing at the moment. Today, I’m going to Northampton to do a talk with schoolchildren about acting and screenwork. Since Waterloo Road, the amount of schools that have asked me to do things like that has been crazy…I think they think i’m really a teacher!! I have done a Channel Four film with David Morrissey, two plays, two documentary voiceovers, a radio play and have narrated BBC2’s Raymond Blanc’s Kitchen Secrets series. I’m also about to start filming a new BBC five part drama, called 32 Brinkburn Street.

produced, which is something that me and my production company have been working on for the last couple of years and we’re getting closer all the time. The main project is a massive television series, which is really exciting. It’s going to take a lot of money and commitment so I don’t mind how long it takes to get off the ground… as long as we get there! Plus there are lots of other little things in the pipeline! Find out more about eva’s new film, at www.beingsoldthemovie.com.

Whitworth’s own singer-songwriter, Jackson Kay, is a popular name on the local gig circuit. style caught up with the multi-talented 23-year-old to discuss his radio debut, writing ‘choons’ and why everyone should love Pop!

How did you get into music? I've been brought up with music all around me, my dad was in a band and I always remember him writing songs and playing them to me. One of my brothers is a drummer and the other plays bass, so it’s a very musical family. I grew up listening to all my family’s music tastes.

Do you write your own songs? Yes, I’ve written songs ever since I can remember. I wrote my first song when I was 5 years old and it was called ‘If You Didn't Have Skin You'd Die’! I’ve been writing songs ever since and the only real aim is to get better and better. I also record and produce my own music in my home studio... it’s nothing fancy but it does the trick.

Where can fans-to-be listen to it? I have a Facebook and a Myspace. Type Jackson Kay into either and you’ll find me!

Who are your musical influences? I am into loads of different artists. I think it’s important to learn from artists in different genres and I love pop music...at the end of the day it just means "popular". Influences include John Mayer Silverchair, Justin Timberlake, Deadmau5, Squeeze and a band called Jellyfish, who aren't very well known but they were a big part of my childhood. They wrote ‘Baby’s Coming Back’, which went to No.1 when McFly covered it.

What has been the highlight of being Jackson Kay so far? It’s cool just to be able to have an outlet. Writing can be a massive stress reliever; its really therapeutic to put your heart on your sleeve and write a ‘choon’. I love playing live too. I played a private gig for a neighbour, who lives where my Grandma lived before she passed away. We all used to play in the garden as kids and a few months ago we played there for the guy’s birthday. 10

www.rochdalestyle.com

It was like a homecoming. I’ve done a lot of gigs but that was the best so far.

Which local venues have you most enjoyed playing?

had a short interview and I played the song live on air… I didn’t even have time to tune my guitar, but thank god it was right. After the interview, they were really positive about the song. The presenter said it was such a catchy tune it had been in her head all week!

I gig in Manchester quite a lot. I love the city and there's a large group of decent bands. I did a festival in What are your ambitions for the future? Whitworth about a year ago, outside to hundreds of To keep writing songs and get some Manchester gigs people, which was cool - it was called Party in the sorted for my original music. I also play in a covers Park. Outside gigs are always the best. band and we’re always out in local venues. Type You recently played live on ‘Jackson Kay Band’ into Facebook for more details.

BBC Radio Manchester, how did it go?

I loved the experience. It came about after I sent off a new song to a few BBC producers and they got back to me saying I could go in the day after. I thought it was going to be a recording, where I could have a few attempts and then they’d play it later in the day. But I turned up at the BBC and they took me straight through into a room with the presenter and a big light saying ‘ON AIR’… “and now here’s Jackson Kay"! I

What advice would you give to budding musicians? Don’t be afraid of pop! Keep writing, even if you have a block, something will come up eventually. And practice, practice, practice... oh and the more gigs you do the better!!n

Foul

Deeds Indeed Looking up Packer Street towards the notorious 'Gank' an area of depravity, crime and pestilence.

When I was approached to write a ‘dark history’ of Rochdale my initial reaction was “no way”. Having produced a few straight local history books, the prospect of churning out a collection of ‘foul deeds, suspicious deaths, ghost and ghoul stories’, seemed a bit distasteful and pretty unchallenging. Two things changed my mind. Firstly, having simultaneously looked at the possibility of doing similar projects on Salford and Oldham, it was obvious that those tales originating from the Rochdale area were far more varied and more interesting. In many cases, they were just downright weird! Secondly, given that much of the action took place during Rochdale’s expansion during the Industrial Revolution, the stories provided a fascinating insight into 12

www.rochdalestyle.com

local social development. Needless to say, it was the poor and uneducated that provided the majority of victims...and perpetrators.

two murdered nephews seeking revenge for their deaths by the hand of their evil uncle Richard de Clegg.

Not always though; the book begins with a classic ghost story, our local version of the murder of the Princes in the Tower, the legend of Clegg Hall Boggart. Even now, as the wind whips down from Blackstone Edge and Clegg Hall stands silhouetted by a gibbous moon, it is no stretch to imagine the

The Rake Inn at Littleborough and the Baum at Rochdale provide other locations for supernatural stories to be taken with a cup of cocoa and a healthy pinch of salt, but things get very bizarre with the tale I called ‘Poor Annie’s Ghost’.

The brutal murder of Annie Dawson, by her drink-enraged husband in Dawson Square, in February 1877, was ignored by neighbours who chose to turn a blind eye to the violence they witnessed. Such was the collective guilt experienced by the local community, that sightings of Annie’s ghost gliding through the walls of the cramped courtyard became commonplace. This mass hysteria resulted in the entire community fleeing the area, until in 1882 the Square stood deserted. Nobody would occupy the premises, which were eventually demolished. As I searched the newspaper archives in Touchstones, I realised that the two previous examples were just the tip of the iceberg. I came across unresolved mysteries, possible miscarriages of justice and stories so odd you literally couldn’t make them up. Who, for instance, would credit the 1970’s story reported widely as ‘The Case of the Rochdale Mummy’? In March 1977, refuse collectors found a mummified body in the bins at Ashfield Valley flats. The corpse was identified by a fingerprinting process, developed at the Egyptology Department at Manchester University. The victim had, it transpired, been stuffed into an airing cupboard for two years because, well...read the book for the rest of the story!

Then in the chapter “Dirty Old Town” the question posed is: who killed the woman found in April 1861 in the canal at Lockbridge on Oldham Road? Was it her lover, her husband or someone else and who was the mysterious Mr. Roberts? Similarly did Jonathan Heywood kill his lover Margaret Jones in 1855? Heywood was hung in Manchester in front of 10,000 spectators, still protesting his innocence and accusing itinerant David Martin of the crime. Martin’s brother disowned him and Heywood was buried next to Margaret Jones in Rochdale Cemetery. Most unusual for a convicted murderer.

Incidentally, last year we made a few short TV adaptations called ‘Darkside Rochdale’ so if you fancy a taster for the book search ‘John Cole Rochdale’ on You Tube. ‘Foul Deeds & Suspicious Deaths In & Around Rochdale’, is published by Pen & Sword books, priced £12.99.n John Cole

Rochdale Author.

Then there was the story of the Littleborough landlady saved from death by gunshot by her corset; the horrific tale of the Rochdale landlord prepared to poison four regulars in order carry out his plan to murder his wife and children and the Rochdale hangman, so depressed by his ghastly job that, having threatened to kill his family, he then slit his own throat. There are yarns about highwaymen, forgers, garrotters and ...vicars. Some are sad, some are odd but I can honestly say I found each one fascinating. And there’s probably enough unused material for a second volume!

Half -Moon Yard - residents were itinerent labourers, unmemorable and unknown.

THE DALE 'keeping up appearances'

t the time of writing, it is proving a surprising season for the newly promoted ‘Dale’, who are tasting life in a higher tier of football after a record 36 years in the basement division. Rochdale are certainly punching above their weight in the Npower league division one. This is of no surprise to the management team, Keith Hill and David Flitcroft, who have great belief that Rochdale can win promotion again this season. They have already impressed their dedicated fans with some surprising wins away from home. The league table shows the Dale in a possible promotion place, but Manager Keith Hill is quick to point out that there is a long way to go until the end of the season in May. However, we’re certainly heading in the right direction.

A

STAN MILBURN 1926 -2010 The new season in August started on a sad note as tributes were paid to Rochdale football legend, Stan Milburn. Style Magazine interviewed the man known to fans as ‘Mr Rochdale’ back in 2006, just before his 80th birthday. Stan made 237 appearances for Rochdale Football Club, scoring 26 goals between 1959 and 1965 and he was part of the side that played in the Football League Cup Final in 1962.

Mark Hodkinson, who is a lifelong fan of Rochdale, has just published Spotland: The Sun Also Rises, marking Rochdale’s impressive promotion season 2009/10. To be in with a chance of winning a copy please enter our competition on page 75. 14

www.rochdalestyle.com

Born in Ashington, Northumberland on October 27 1926, Stan was part of a famous footballing dynasty. His brothers were John 'Jack' Milburn of Leeds United and Bradford City, James 'Jimmy' Milburn of Leeds United and Bradford City, George Milburn of Leeds United and Chesterfield, and cousin of the great Newcastle and England star

Colin Meredith

Jackie Milburn, who is Newcastle's second top goal scorer of all time. His nephews Jack and Bobby, who regularly visited Stan in Rochdale, won the World Cup with England. Stan, who died aged 83, was the youngest of the four Milburn brothers, who all played professional football. It was at the nonleague club, Ashington, where he attracted the attention of Chesterfield, for whom he signed in January 1947. In March 1952, he moved to Leicester City where he won a second division medal in the 1953 to 1954 season. He moved to Rochdale, in January 1959, and earned a testimonial at the club, an honour he had achieved at all three of his league clubs. Following his retirement from football, the former fullback settled in Rochdale and worked as a warehouseman, at Turner Brothers in Spotland. Stan, who lived in Passmonds with his wife of 59 years Marjorie, continued to play for the company's team until 1984. He also leaves a daughter Ann, grandchildren Lee and Julie and great-grandchildren Megan, 12 and Lauren, 9. Stan was also a member of the England B team and his one England cap was carried proudly on his coffin, at his funeral service at St Clements Church in August. n

Big

Cyril

Rochdale’s most famous son

The man often described as the most famous Rochdale citizen since

Gracie Fields, sadly died on 3rd September 2010, aged 82. Respected for this tireless work in the constituency and for his support of the

underdog, Sir Cyril Smith was very much the people’s champion.

sir cyril, received his MBe in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 1966, his knighthood in 1998, the freedom of rochdale in 1994 and became the newly elected Member of Parliament for rochdale in 1972, though he had been a major player in rochdale politics for many years. Style spoke to Cyril back in 2006, as he explained how his career had started: “I was 17 and I was a junior in the Tax Office when I became interested in politics. I was sent for and told that politics were not allowed in the Civil Service. I was given the choice of politics or the Civil Service – I chose the former!”

Pensioners Club, following on from his mother Eva. He was a lifelong member of the Unitarian Chapel, a former Sunday School teacher and Superintendent and a Trustee and Chairman for over 30 years. He

The youngest councillor ever in Rochdale, he was just 23 when he was first elected to Rochdale Council and became mayor of Rochdale in 1966. After fighting a successful bye-election campaign in 1972, ‘Big Cyril’ as he was known for his ebullient, outspoken personality and his size, represented Rochdale in Parliament from 1972 to 1992, when he retired undefeated. He fought 11 parliamentary and local elections, losing only one.

was also Founding Chairman and President of the Rochdale Childer organisation, which assists hundreds of Rochdale children.

Sir Cyril’s voluntary and civic contribution to Rochdale is huge. He was a founder of the Rochdale Youth Music Festival and Chairman of Rochdale Youth Orchestra. He was Secretary of the Rochdale Happy Hour

Back in 2006, we asked Cyril what he now thought of his hometown. He replied, “Rochdale always seems to be closing things rather than opening new ones. I don’t think Rochdale has gone forward but that’s not

the fault of the people of Rochdale… Rochdalians have a pride in their town. It’s the human spirit that makes any town and we’ve still got a lot of that here and that’s a good thing. There’s a tremendous amount of voluntary work because going back for 100 years, Rochdalians have always been interested in voluntary service. Rochdale is still one of the best towns in the North of England.” Over 400 family members, friends and special guests attended the celebration of Cyril’s life at Rochdale Town Hall on the 13th September. Members of the public lined the streets, to pay their respects, as the funeral procession made its way from Spotland Bridge funeral home, past his home in Emma Street and on to The Esplanade. Professor Lord David Alton, Chris Davies MEP and former Rochdale MP Paul Rowen gave readings at the service. Cyril leaves his brother Norman, sister in law Shirley, nieces Christine and Gillian and nephew Craig.

‘Mary Queen of the inside story. Top hairdresser John peers and his rochdale salon were propelled into the limelight, following their recent appearance on BBC2 series ‘Mary Queen of Shops’. The series followed ‘retail guru’ Mary portas as she shared tricks of the trade with failing businesses. Style caught up with John peers to discuss life after Mary’s makeover!

How did you become involved with ‘Queen of Shops’? a friend from rochdale Town Centre Management had been in touch with Mary portas to see if she would come to rochdale and do a consultation about why there are so many empty shops. I believe that the council turned her down because her consultation fee was £15,000 a day! following that, Mary was doing a talk at the neC for Wella, infront of 500 people. after the talk, she was interviewed by various magazines and she asked them if they knew of any hairdressers in rochdale. She ended up getting numbers for me and a guy called freddy in rawtenstall, who I taught. freddy turned her down because he said he couldn’t handle having Mary portas there for a week! But I said bring it on, I’d love to do it! all I focussed

on was that the programme was an hourlong, on BBC2 on a Monday night, directly after Coronation Street’s finished. I thought it was bound to do us some good. I wanted rochdale, as well as the salon, to get a ‘push’ from it. Do you think it was a fair reflection of Rochdale? no I don’t think it was. They could have focussed on better parts of the town centre, such as our shopping centres, but it’s all in the edit! They wanted to show the negative, before the positive. What impact has ‘Queen of Shops’ had on the salon? having Mary portas advice for four weeks has been valuable and nine million people watched the programme, which must be a good thing. The experience made us think and it made us spend. We want to make sure that when clients visit the salon they stay with us. We’ve installed coal burning stoves, which look fantastic. We’ve also put in a separate Barber’s shop, where men can come in for a shave too. and everyone has a uniform now. It’s made us look at ourselves more.

What was it like watching yourself and your staff on tv? I loved it. I mean, there were bits where I watched it back and thought why did I do that! There was one part where I cut a girl’s hair and they edited the programme to make it seem as though the consultation was really quick, when it was actually 15 minutes. They said the hairstyle wasn’t what the client wanted, but she was actually really happy with her hair - she’s still raving about it on her facebook page! on the Monday after the programme aired, I took the family to White Water Valley. It was quite funny because we were stopped 12 times by people wanting photos & autographs. My kids thought it was hilarious and couldn’t wait to tell their friends at school.

keeping it up, because people have seen it on the tv. In the new year, we’ll scrap those five looks and create our own new, fresh looks. Do you have any celebrity clients? roberto Mancini, the Manchester City Manager and a few of the players, such as adam Johnson and pablo Zambaleta. I have cut Sven Goran eriksson’s hair in the past and he asked me who I support. I answered Man united and Man City and he said ‘not possible’! But I do support them both. I also like Burnley and rochdale to do well! What advice would you give local businesses who are stuck in a rut? Think out of the box. We train regularly and send out staff to regular guest speakers about how to feel good about yourself and getting yourself into a positive frame of mind. That’s a very important thing.

Are Mary Porta’s ideas proving successful? The main thing Mary did for us was the John peer’s fashion hair, which is the five looks for £25 each. But it doesn’t give enough choice. The right hairstyle brings out your features and suits your body and style. The five looks aren’t flexible enough. But we’re

What do you think would attract more people to Rochdale? I think they should open the river up again because water attracts people. and a full-time or three days a week market on The Butts would be great. I remember going to the market as a kid and it was like going to a football match! n Colin Meredith

A place to relax and unwind I recently enjoyed a morning of pampering, at a little Day spa, (at Dominic Gregory hair est., edenfield road) which included two of their luxurious treatments; a skin brightener Facial and a Matis luxury Full body Massage.

a little Day spa have created a tranquil atmosphere, complete with relaxing décor and calming music, for a unique relaxation experience. The heated treatment bed and fluffy towels add to the experience, giving you that warm and cosy feeling. The facial was tailor made to suit my skin’s needs and a cocktail of vitamins and minerals left my skin glowing and feeling ‘wide awake’. The full body massage involves different massage techniques, which relieve muscle tension and allow for total relaxation. The treatment made me realise just how much tension you can build up everywhere in your body, from your head to your toes. I tend to hold stress and tension in my shoulders and back, so my beauty therapist suggested hot stone body Therapy, which relieves deep muscle tension, especially in these areas… it’s definitely top of my Christmas wish list!

I would definitely recommend a little Day spa to anyone looking to indulge in some precious ‘me’ time. It’s the perfect place to unwind and be pampered in style! To make sure you’re pampered in time for Christmas, style readers can receive an unbelievable 50% off treatments, throughout november, with a little Day spa’s new beauty therapists, Gina and amy. style readers can also receive 10% of treatments with any therapist at any time. Just call the salon on 01706 715 711 and quote ‘sTyle’. For a chance to win a Winter spa Day, courtesy of a little Day spa, enter our competition on page 75. one lucky style reader will enjoy three hours of pampering, including a luxury facial, full body hot stone massage, file & varnish (for hands or feet) and a light lunch. n

….because the lady is a

Vamp

With Cheryl Cole and Kim Kardashian filling the front pages with their flawless doe-eyed appeal, it’s no wonder we take one look at our drab make up bag and feel ever so slightly underwhelmed. Fear not ladies, I am going to guide you through the trends for this season and your make up bag essentials. BLACK IS BACK! Lips are loud and gothic this season. The vampy pout is undeniably the biggest new trend for this autumn/winter. Lips are taking centre stage. With luscious dark berry tones, your lips will be sumptuous and sexy. Experiment with different textures; there are a myriad of options, from stains and gloss, to matte lip colours - so try them all out. Don’t be afraid to play with shape, texture and tone, but remember, less is more and minimalism is key. If lips are your selection then keep eyes neutral, with a simple lick of mascara and a faint sweep of eyeliner to softly line those top lashes. Here are my top tips for sumptuous dark berry lips: Foundation on your lips provides a great base for any lip colour and makes it last all day. Sweep a small amount of your foundation over the lips and dust with face powder.

a

a Carefully line your lips with a hard, shard liner pencil (great tip is to keep your liner in the fridge over night). Create a black base by smudging that liner inwards from the outer edge to the fuller part of you lips. Now layer this with a deep wine red or burgundy gloss over the top.

winter browns make a great alternative to the heavy black smokey eye. These autumnal shades of greys and browns require nude lips, so keep the lips neutral and soft opting for pale nude tones. The big no-no this season is the false lash look. Also, use very little mascara. Fake is out, carefree chic is in.

a

For a more wearable daytime look opt for a rich aubergine stain or dark berry matte lip colour.

a For that catwalk chic and more youthful edge, line the lips slightly inside your natural lip line, on the inside corners of your lips, this will give you doll like appeal. UP IN SMOKE! If your selected statement feature is your eyes, then unsurprisingly the smokey eye is still in this season. Softer smokey greys and warm

If you’re left thinking you daren’t attempt these looks alone for fear of looking more like Marilyn Manson than Marilyn Monroe, then book yourself in with a professional make up artist at the Retreat! Rochdale Exhibition Pays Tribute To Local Artist

An exhibition of the works of Bob Crossley, who has recently died aged 98, has opened at Number Ten Gallery, in Rochdale Town Centre. Featuring 24 paintings and seven limited edition silk screen prints, the display offers a rare opportunity to view and buy work, by this internationally respected artist, who lived and worked for many years in Rochdale. Bob was recognised most famously by L.S.Lowry, who bought one of Bob’s paintings. Speaking at the Preview opening event, Andy Pearce, from the People’s History Museum, said, “I only got to meet Bob late in his life, but he came across as someone who was passionate about the enriching and transforming power of art and the importance of understanding one‘s heritage. In Rochdale, as in many places at the present time, these values are being questioned and the opportunities for people to experience arts and heritage for themselves are under threat. That’s why developments like Number Ten Gallery and Angela and Christine’s (co-owners of Number Ten)

ambitious plans to expand further and open their art café seem to me more important than ever. I urge you to support them if you can. I’m sure it is what Bob intended when he chose Number Ten gallery to show some of his latest and never-seen-before works”. This sentiment was reiterated by Mayor of Rochdale, Zulfiquar Ali who, expressing his support at the Preview, said, “This is most encouraging; anything like this that can bring in people from outside into Rochdale centre and promote the cultural heritage of the town must be a good thing!”.

The exhibition runs until January 28th 2011. For further details please contact Number Ten on 01706 354076. OPENING TIMES: Mon-Sat – 9am – 5pm Thursdays in December open till late SUNDAYS in December open 10am to 4pm CHRISTMAS EVE OPEN till 4.30pm Closed 25th to 28th Dec inclusive Closed New Year’s Day and Bank Hol Mon 3rd Jan.

Alex Gerrard talks to style Alex Gerrard leapt to fame as girlfriend - and now wife - of Liverpool and England player Steven Gerrard. Often described

Mrs Gerrard has now teamed up with designer fashion brand Forever Unique, to create a stunning 16-piece autumn/winter collection. Style spoke to Alex about the exciting new venture and her top fashion tips.

Photos: Forever Unique by Alex Gerrard available exclusively from www.foreverunique.co.uk

How did you go about designing the collection? I worked very closely with the design team at Forever Unique. They're experts in their field so I fed back my thoughts on fabrics, prints, styles and shapes and they would present their interpretations back on a regular basis. I also tried and tested all the garments because what looks good on paper doesn't always translate in person.

What are your top style tips? Mix and match your wardrobe – you can completely reinvent an outfit. And don’t take trends too seriously, what suits one person isn’t always right for somebody else.

What do you think are the most important things to consider when putting together an outfit? I try to wear clothing that I feel comfortable in. And I can't go anywhere without a gorgeous bag - it can completely change an outfit.

How will you feel if you spot someone wearing one of your designs? Una Healy from the Saturdays has been pictured in two of my designs - the distressed skull dress and the military blazer from Alex Rock - and she looked amazing, it really suits her funky style. Brooke Vincent and Paula Lane from Coronation Street have also been pictured in the collection, as well as Alex Jones the presenter of The One Show.

What is your favourite outfit in the collection and why? The collection is divided into two distinct looks – Alex Glam and Alex Rock. From Alex Glam, I love the black one sleeve dress with peacock feather detail and the red frill dress, as they're really structured and flattering. From Alex Rock, my favourite is the military blazer as you can dress it up and

Launch Party

Mrs Gerrard’s new collection was recently launched in Manchester, with a fashion show at the Barton Arcade and after-party at the Circle Club. The fashion icon called on some of her famous pals to help her celebrate in style. Guests included Coronation Street co-stars Michelle Keegan and Brooke Vincent, Wild at Heart’s Lucy Jo Hudson and Happy Monday’s singer & X Factor contestant, Rowetta. Dancing On Ice judge Jason Gardiner also made an appearance, along with many of Alex’s fellow WAGS, including Hollyoaks actress, Sheree Murphy, wife of Galatasaray player Harry Kewell.

wear it over a dress or just wear it with jeans for a more casual look.

How did you celebrate launching the collection? I had a launch party at Manchester's premium members club, Circle. It was a great night and I was so grateful to everybody that came along to support the range. n Ruth Meredith

Our House

Whitworth Amateur and Musical Dramatic Society (WAMDS) recently staged the regional amateur premiere of Our House, at The Curtain Theatre. The musical was written by Tim Firth (writer of Calendar Girls) and inspired by the songs of 80’s ska band Madness. It proved a hit on the West End and Whitworth Amateur’s production, directed by Mark Rosenthal, certainly did not disappoint. The romantic comedy begins one summer’s evening in North London; the night of a young man’s sixteenth birthday. The night he commits a petty crime to impress the girl of his dreams. When the police arrive, young Joe is faced with one of those crossroad choices, stay or run. Our House follows the two courses his life would have taken had he stayed to face the music or bunked the law and made a run for it.

amount of costume changes. Switching back and forth between Joe’s different realities must have been a complex task, but he gave a faultless performance. Sarah Howarth was vocally impressive, as Joe’s girlfriend Sarah, and Chris Addington and Ryan McMyler worked well together as comedy duo, Emmo & Lewis. Nikki Law and Aileen Williams deserve a special mention for their excellent comic timing, as Bille & Angie. Chris Pollard, Jo Weetman and Darren Fricker also put in impressive performances. The production featured classic non-stop Madness hits, such as House of Fun, Baggy Trousers, Driving In My Car, It Must Be Love and Our House, as well as plenty of Madness-inspired dance moves. The society pulled out all the stops in their set design and an on-stage band, directed by Nick Sanders, helped to create a lively atmosphere. The audience seemed to enjoy every minute of this feel-good show and everyone was up on their feet for the finale. Ruth Meredith

In order to portray the two different paths Joe’s life would have taken, leading man, Terry Banham, had an unbelievable

Prescription forMurder St Ann's Players presented their autumn production, the thriller, "Prescription for Murder" by Norman Robbins, in the Parish Hall at Brocklebank Road, Rochdale, in October. The play is set in a small village in Devon, called Bere Knighton and the action takes place in the lounge of Dr Richard Forth's house. As the play unfolds, it becomes apparent that Dr Forth's wife, Barbara, is not well and suspects she is being poisoned. Several possibilities emerge as we are introduced to the characters; Eric Dawson, a computer salesman from Buxton, Julia Moore, a woman obviously in love with Dr Forth; Mary and Alan Haigh, friends of the Doctor, and the trusted housekeeper Dorothy Livingstone. Also, the writer hints that the bad tempered Doctor himself could be the culprit. The play, well directed by Judith Mansfield, had the support of a strong cast. Barbara Forth, the long suffering wife, was excellently played by Sue Howarth, who gave the part the light, shade and power that her character required and Tim Keiley gave an impressive performance as Dr Forth. Dave Stopford as Eric Dawson (who turned out to be a conman and Barbara's actual husband David Young), put in a great performance and added to the tension as the play unfolded. Lynda Kent and Ian Mansfield, as Mary and Alan Haigh, handled their characters very well and one had to feel sorry for 42

Alan Haigh, as the downtrodden husband of Mary. Annette Nodwell handled the part of the rich widow, in love with Dr Forth, in a confident and believable manner. Finally, a special mention for Joanne Frost, as the busybody housekeeper Dorothy Livingstone, whose comedic timing and cutting remarks, provided the humour in abundance. The ‘whodunnit’ aspect of the play kept everyone guessing until the end and was completed in a dramatic climax, which sent the audience home enthralled. The next production at St Ann's will be "First Things First", a comedy by Derek Benfield, in February 2011.

ROCHDALE THESPIANS SHARPEN SKILLS FOR

Sweeney Todd Rochdale Amateur Operatic Society has been entertaining the town since 1898, raising over ÂŁ50,000 for charity, with over 120 productions. They have received rave reviews for their spectacular shows, staged at The Gracie Fields Theatre. The society receive no external funding and rely solely on the support of local theatre-goers. In February 2011, the society will present the popular musical thriller, ‘Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street’, by Stephen Sondeim; the tale of vengeance and true love, featuring some of the finest music ever written for the theatre. Set in Victorian London it tells the infamous story of Sweeney Todd, the demon barber of Fleet Street, who forms an enterprising

business relationship with Mrs Lovett, the proprietor of the downstairs pie-shop. Returning to the greedy streets of London after being wrongly exiled, Sweeney is gripped by revenge and blinded by rage. He embarks on a murderous campaign, reopening his Fleet Street barber shop and slitting the throats of his customers before they are turned into London’s tastiest pies.

Rehearsals are already in full swing for Rochdale Amateur’s forthcoming production, directed by Michael McCaw. With a highly talented cast, strong chorus, spectacular scenery and a live orchestra, it is set to be a thrilling night at the theatre.

Sondheim’s exciting score underpins a production of spine-tingling wit, humour and tenderness that has been acclaimed by critics and audiences alike – including Oscar and Golden Globe success for Tim Burton’s big screen box office hit, which starred Johnny Depp.

Christmas is never quite complete without a trip the pantomime. It's the perfect excuse to get the family together and laugh your socks off! In Rochdale, we are lucky to have a wide variety of productions available to us, from Repertory productions staged at local theatres such as Oldham Coliseum, to lavish productions with the big stars, staged in Bradford and Manchester. Middleton Arena are staging a spectacular fairytale production of Beauty and the Beast, with experienced pantomime dame David Rumelle as Madame Lotty.

Local actress Sue Devaney

Oldham Coliseum's production of Sleeping Beauty will star popular local actress, Sue Devaney, as the evil Carabosse. The show also has the excellent Finetime Fontaine playing dame Nurse Nora.

If you are willing to travel further afield, then The Bradford Alhambra have the amazing panto comic Billy Pearce in their production of Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs. Billy returns to Bradford every year, because of public demand and its usually a sell-out so early booking is essential. The Opera House in Manchester are also staging Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs. Away from the traditional pantomime, The Lowry, in Salford, present a spectacular production of Peter Pan - The Musical Adventure, starring Brian Capron, from Coronation Street, as Captain Hook and comic actor, John Henshaw, as Smee. n

Essential Guide to

Christmas Trees

Although the quality and range of artificial Christmas trees

becomes greater, nothing can beat the real thing. The wonderful pine aroma, the excitement for children of choosing the tree (which invariably is always too big for your room, and your car) is all part of the traditional Christmas experience. CUT OR WITH ROOTS? Cut trees should be left outside in the rain until the last moment to avoid excessive needle drop. Once inside, a water filled stand will keep them fresh looking. Alternatively, try a tree with roots. These can either be ‘pot grown’ or ‘potted’. Pot grown trees are guaranteed to grow and can be grown-on outside and used over several Christmas seasons making them an excellent choice. ‘Potted’ trees have been dug up out of the fields and put into pots shortly before Christmas. These trees are typically cheaper and will hold their needles much better than a cut tree, however the lifting and potting process often removes too much root and survival rates after Christmas are much lower. The best chances of survival are the very small trees, typically 60cm – 80cm tall, as roots have rarely developed. Be warned, a traditional Norway Spruce planted in your garden can reach 10 metres in 10 years!

WHICH VARIETY? The most common variety used to be the traditional Norway Spruce, however, its propensity to lose its needles and the pricklier texture of its foliage have caused a drop in its popularity. Even so, its particularly keen price and its historical associations keep it in the market. For anyone seeking a 4 metre+ tree this will be the variety most widely available. 52

www.rochdalestyle.com

The new ‘king of trees’ is currently the needle retaining Nordman Fir. It has a classic Christmas tree shape, wonderful soft dark green foliage with a pleasant aroma and most importantly it holds onto its needles exceptionally well. This factor and some very clever marketing by the Christmas tree growers has made the Nordman Fir No.1 for most real tree shoppers. However, a new contender is gradually increasing in popularity. The Fraser Fir has all the characteristics of the Nordman Fir but is much slimmer in its habit. Where the Nordman can spread halfway across your lounge, the Fraser sits neatly in a third of the space. The aroma from a Fraser is like ‘candy floss’, which, if you have a sweet tooth like me, is even better. Other trees to consider are the beautifully blue-tinged Noble Fir which holds its foliage very well and has wonderfully tiered branches. However it is much harder to grow a perfectly shaped specimen so is not as widely available. The Lodge Pole Pine and Scots Pine have a bottle brush type foliage arrangement. They both offer a wonderful pine scent and hold their needles really well and they are very popular in some areas.

CARING FOR YOUR CUT TREE Once you get your tree home leave it outside in the cold and rain until you want to bring it inside. This will keep it fresh and avoid it drying out.

If you wish, prune some of the branches to give a better shape. The clippings can be used to decorate your house or make wreaths. The stump of the tree should be cut back by 5cm and the surrounding bark trimmed off by an additional 3cm, before placing it into a waterfilled stand. Treat your cut tree very much like a bunch of flowers, cutting the trunk in this way removes any airlock in the stump. The tree can then take up as much water as it needs, keeping it much fresher looking. Remember, trees take up a lot of water so keep the stand topped up!

RECYCLING Pot grown trees can be kept and used year after year. Cut trees are recycled by the council at various advertised centres, some of which shred them into bark mulch to put on the garden, others use them to create a new habitat for nesting birds. For every real tree Christmas tree you buy, another 6 or more have already been planted so that you can have a tree for the next 6 or more years! n Tim Baylis Gordon Rigg Gardening Expert

STYLE DISCOVERS THE PERFECT DINING EXPERIENCE The Cedar Tree Restaurant, in Newhey, is a delightful hidden gem, run by husband and wife team, Rachel and Andrew Garner. I was recently lucky enough to sample some of their delicious seasonal menu. My guest and I were given a warm and friendly welcome and shown to our table by co-owner Rachel. We really did feel like guests and not customers. The restaurant itself is cosy and romantic, with relaxing décor and sparkling chandeliers. A pleasant surprise came when we opened the menu to see such a varied array of options, that matched the delicate and tantalising aromas coming from the kitchen. The menu certainly has something for everyone. With high expectations, we were not disappointed as the courses rolled out of the kitchen, courtesy of chef and co-owner, Andrew. We both thoroughly enjoyed ‘tandoori chicken skewers’ to start. I then chose ‘seared

strips of prime rump steak in hoisin & plum sauce with creamy spring onion mash’ which was cooked to perfection, whilst my guest enjoyed ‘roasted venison haunch steak with creamy mash, green beans and a classic peppercorn sauce’. Portion sizes were generous, whilst being beautifully presented. A scrumptious Banoffee mess, plus coffee & mints, provided the perfect end to the evening. We were left to enjoy our meal, but at no time did we feel neglected. The atmosphere was relaxing and unhurried. A nice balance of customer service all round. This year, The Cedar Tree celebrates ten successful years and it’s easy to see why… delicious food, excellent customer service and a relaxing atmosphere make for the perfect dining experience. It made a refreshing change to be able to sit-in a fish & chip shop and not come out smelling like a greasy cafe! The Style team enjoyed freshly cooked fish, chips and mushy peas, plus cups of tea and bread and butter, all for £6.95. The batter was crisp and light, not greasy and the chips were cooked to perfection. All in all, the best fish and chips we’ve all eaten in a long time. Not every chippy gets it right, but The Bridge definitely gets Style's seal of approval! It reminded us why 'fish and chips' remains a traditional British favourite. We highly recommend The Bridge Chippy to all our readers... it's now our firm favourite chippy and we're certain it will soon be yours! Colin Meredith

TONY’S GOT THE BUG Rochdale based engineer, Tony Connelly, is an interesting chap; he owns a jet engine, a fully operational metal model tank and a unique car called the Stimson Buggy. I met Tony, at his home in Castleton, to find out more about the Stimson Buggy and his interest for all things out-of-the-ordinary.

Tony with the 1970's Mini Bug

I

n the early 80’s, Tony started manufacturing his first kit car called the Stimson Mini Bug. He explained, “I’ve always been into cars – the more unusual the better! The Mini Bug was based on a mini, but more a beach buggy. It was originally created by British designer, Barry Stimson and was his first concept car. I did that for a few years, not making very much money, but I thoroughly enjoyed the experience”.

Four years ago, Tony began looking for a ‘totally impractical’ fun two-seater. He explained, “I wanted something fun, something you can jump into when you’re feeling a bit jaded, and that’s when I stumbled across the Stimson Buggy on the internet”. Tony was stunned to find out it was one of Barry Stimson’s designs. He added, “At first I thought the vehicle had been sold, but after a little research I managed to track the vehicle down to Portsmouth. I spoke to a lady called Caroline, who turned out to be Barry’s wife and Barry invited me down to Portsmouth to meet him and take a look at the car. I had never met Barry before, but had always wanted to, because I admired the very sculptural, visual vehicles he designed”. Tony travelled down to Portsmouth for a test drive in the red Stimson Buggy,

which is based on a Ford Fiesta floorpan running gear, with a triangulated chassis for stiffness and a fibreglass body over the top. He explained how his wife is rarely interested in any of the cars he buys, but took an immediate liking to the Stimson Buggy, so he knew he was onto a winner. The Stimson Buggy is basically a concept car, with only one in existence, as sadly the only other Buggy was destroyed in a fire at Barry’s factory. Tony added, “Before the fire, Barry Stimson and his son took the two cars on an endurance trip, so they’ve actually been on a 4,500 mile round trip to the Artic… not something I’d like to do, but it does prove the reliability of the cars”. Tony is having great fun with his new set of wheels and is certainly turning heads around Rochdale. He has already received a number of offers for the Stimson, but says he is having far too much fun and could never part with the car that has put a new lease of life into his motoring. Tony is considering putting the Stimson buggy into production and if anyone is interested he can be contacted at CSM tools on 01706 342123.

SUCCESS FOR LOCAL It’s been three years since our last interview with sensei Dervish and Kaizen-Do Karate, but they have continued to go from strength to strength, year after year. sensei Dervish who is firmly the leading expert in karate tuition for rochdale has, amongst other things, just been awarded Coach of the year from rochdale Council, for his outstanding coaching abilities and dedication to karate. This is a much soughtafter title, which no other karate instructor has ever achieved. The council realise the endless benefits that all students achieve when becoming a member of Dervish’s excellent academy. sensei Dervish will go on to represent the borough and his academy at the north West awards later this year.

KARATE ACADEMY In addition to the award, Kaizen-Do Karate have also just opened up their fully equipped full time Martial arts academy, which is the first Karate/Martial arts Club in rochdale to have been awarded the highly prestigious title of springboard. springboard is a set of criteria outlined by the council which proves the club is safe, welcoming for new participants of all ages, highly prosperous & extremely professional in its conduct; ultimately, a club that rochdale Council is very proud of. Further to the Coach of the year award and springboard title, the academy and sensei Dervish are also ‘highly Commended’ by rochdale Council, a statement that needs no explanation. When speaking to sensei Dervish his passion for karate and improving each and every student’s wellbeing is apparent. he commented that ‘our academy is successful because we genuinely improve people’s lives - we are no ordinary run of the mill Karate club, we break the mould - unlike other clubs that have 30, 40 or 50 students in an average class, we limit class sizes to ensure quality tuition’. Kaizen-Do Karate currently trains from two high class venues in rochdale, which have superb facilities to allow student excellence; Moss Mill (Woodbine street east) and rochdale Fitness First leisure (sandbrook Park).

The academy is family centred and there are many ‘family classes’ held where parents and their children train happily together. Training with somebody else is often a good motivational tool, since you can practice at home together. upon enrolment, sensei Dervish guarantees that his academy will improve you and your family’s life immediately. benefits of the academy include improved lifestyle, increased fitness and raised selfconfidence. Kaizen-Do Karate runs classes 6 days a week from their full-time premises & also 1 class a week from Fitness First. Their full time academy is fully equiped with mats and punch bags and allows all students to reach their true potential.

READER OFFER The Academy runs many specialised classes 6 days a week and anybody who wants to book a FREE lesson can contact one of the team, by emailing team@kaizendokarate.com or logging on to www.kaizendokarate.com. If you decide to enrol, your friend/family member can enrol for FREE if you both enrol – just quote ‘Rochdale Style Magazine’.

CHRISTMAS FOR THE PETROLHEAD By the time you read this, Bonfire Night will be the out the way which means every commercial break will feature the jingling of bells and snowy scenes in the hope of selling you the latest wares for the yuletide celebrations.

hile I’m perhaps the world’s worst Christmas shopper - usually running around a department store at 4.30pm on Christmas Eve convincing myself that my wife really wants a Breville Sandwich Toaster - this issue I’m going to help you find the perfect gift if your partner has a passion for cars.

of a trek, but my favourite circuit for racing my own car is the Bedford Autodrome. Its massive run off areas and lack of Armco barriers means that even if you run out of talent at a pivotal moment, you won’t end up damaging your pride and joy… just your ego!

ON THE TRACK Anyone with even a casual interest in cars, will at some point have watched motor sport on TV and thought ‘I fancy a go at that’. It’s now easier and more affordable than ever to have a go at one of the greatest adrenalin rushes available, without jumping off something at height!

ON THE ROAD For a more relaxed experience, how about hiring the classic car your beloved has dreamt about for a few days, or even better, combine it with a stay in some of the most scenic areas of the country. Austin Healeys, E-Type Jaguars or something more humble like a Morris Minor or a classic Mini, as well as Americana like the Ford Mustang are all just a brief internet search away.

Your first option is what is usually called the dream cars package. Companies up and down the land are ready to lend your loved one the car of their dreams, be it an Aston Martin, Ferrari or Lamborghini, at a race circuit near you. A quick google search will turn up plenty of companies but as a personal recommendation check out trackdays.co.uk, who supplied the Aston Martin and Ariel Atom, which brought a massive smile to my wife’s face at her last birthday.

SOMETHING A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT… Admittedly not for the faint hearted but what about actually buying your loved one a car and it needn’t be expensive. Kit model cars can cost a lot of money, but for around £500 you can pick up a project car that can be worked on. This isn’t just a gift of a car but also a hobby! Just make sure you know what you are getting and also make sure a Haynes manual is included in the Christmas stocking!

If you are brave enough, there is also the option of paying for your loved one to take their own car to the limits at an organised track day. There are some great tracks around the country all offering their own unique charms. I know it’s a bit

Healey Club has turned the corner

'Political clubs having become recognised as such a necessity in almost every centre of population however small, it is high time they were removed from the miserable shanties in which some of them, whether Liberal or Conservative, have been established. It is evident the conservatives are paying great regard to their clubs, with the opening of The Healey Conservative Club.' So read the Rochdale Observer on 17 July 1880, proclaiming the newly built club standing just on the side of the road going to Whitworth from Rochdale.

A hundred and thirty years on, the club, now known as The Healey Club, is still going strong and has an open and friendly membership policy. Style spoke to Secretary, Julia Dalton, who explained how the club is now run by a committee of 11 volunteers. She said, "We have been through some lean times during the last 2 years, just like a lot of other clubs and pubs in the area. But we have come out the other side a stronger, more financially stable club. We wouldn’t be here today without the support of our members who are very loyal. Anyone is welcome to join our club at any time. We have a bowling green and several bowling teams, both men and women, and our green has one of the finest settings in the county with fantastic views. The club is Open Mon - Sun 8pm - 12pm and has events and live entertainment throughout the year".

Prick with a fork then blind bake for 8 minutes until golden and crisp.
