KAREN JOHNSON PRIDE OF THE NORTH WEST

Rochdale fundraiser Karen Johnson has recently been crowned the Pride of Granada. She also went on to represent the North West in the Fundraiser category at the star-studded Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Awards in London. Both of Karen’s sons died, aged 12, from the rare genetic disorder Hunter’s Syndrome, less than 18 months apart. She began fundraising for research into genetic disorders, and continued despite her daughter Katie being diagnosed with Leukaemia. Karen’s charity, the GEM Appeal, supported by many local people and businesses, has raised a staggering £2.6 million for both research and treatment machines at Manchester Children’s Hospital. Style caught up with Karen to discuss her recent accolade and future plans for the Rochdale-based charity…

How did it feel to win the ITV Granada Pride of Britain, Fundraiser of the Year award?

Winning the fundraiser of the year award was amazing and I was and still am, immensely proud of that. I was astounded to find out I had won; my husband Pete and daughter Katie had been in contact with Denise (Welch) and Granada and set up the get-together lunch at the Yard in Alderley Edge. The reporter had told me that whoever won would be told on the Thursday, and by the time we went to lunch it was Friday, so I was convinced I hadn't won. I was amazed that they had all managed to keep it from me and shocked to find out how well they could lie to me! I'm glad they did though as it was a wonderful surprise and I was absolutely thrilled. Did you enjoy the star-studded London awards ceremony?

Going to London to the main awards was incredible and I met so many stars including Simon Cowell, Chris Tarrant and Ozzie Osborne! What are the future plans for the GEM Appeal?

Why did you first decide to start the GEM Appeal?

GEM started in 1993 when my boys’ Consultant Paediatrician Dr Ed Wraith asked if I could raise some money to hopefully extend the lab at the Willink Unit at Manchester Children's Hospital and fund research into Hunters Syndrome. At that time there was no treatment and no hope for children diagnosed with these rare genetic disorders and inborn errors of metabolism and very little research was being done into these diseases. Along with Ed and a few other likeminded parents and health professionals, the fundraising began and The GEM Appeal was born. Did you ever expect the charity to be as successful as it has become? I could never have imagined it would become so big and the £2.6 million we have raised so far is unbelievable! I intended to raise as much as I could but there was never a time when I thought about stopping; it's been like a form of therapy I suppose as it's given me a way

of focusing my hurt and loss and turning it into something so positive. How did celebrities such as Denise Welch and Tim Healy first become involved?

Denise got involved when I met her at a Coronation Street v Fieldhouse Cricket Club match when she was on the programme and I was collecting signatures of the stars on a picture of my boys to auction at the Ball at the Rochdale Town Hall. She asked then if she could help - she brought Tim on board and they've supported us as patrons ever since. They became staunch supporters and have contributed enormously to the success of the charity by endorsing the work that is done and by gathering support from other celebrities. How did you find out you’d been nominated for a Pride of Britain award?

I got a phone call from a reporter at The Daily Mirror who told me that Denise Welch had nominated me!

Our future plans are to continue to raise money for a new Tandem Mass Spectrometer for the Willink unit.

Amazingly, £2.6 million in the world of genetic research is only the start and so much more research must still be done to hopefully one day eradicate these terrible diseases that devastate so many lives. Children and young people continue to die on a daily basis and to prevent this, the fundraising must continue. How can Style readers get involved?

If people want to get involved they can contact me (email: karen.gem @btinternet.com) or they can raise money and donate via JustGiving. Also people can support our up and coming local events – all listed on our website www.gemappeal.org.uk. The fundraising by The GEM Appeal and its supporters is totally voluntary with no Government or lottery funding and every penny raised goes directly to the research done at the Willink unit.

THEATRE GROUP TO STAGE NORTH WEST PREMIERE Rochdale Amateur Operatic Society has recently changed its name and will now be known as Rochdale Musical Theatre Company (RMTC). Secretary Kath Meredith commented: “We decided to bring ourselves into the 21st century and have a title that reflects what we perform musicals!”. Following the success of Oliver earlier this year, the company is proud to announce that its next production, in February 2016, will be the North West premiere of the Broadway hit A Tale of Two Cities. Based on Charles Dickens' masterpiece, A Tale of Two Cities is a musical that focuses on the love triangle between young beauty Lucie Manette, French aristocrat Charles Darnay and drunken English cynic Sydney Carton all caught in the clutches of the bloody French Revolution. A Tale of Two Cities the musical opened on Broadway in September 2008, receiving the 2009 Outer Critics Circle Award nomination for Outstanding New Musical. Reviews at the time included:

“The return to the era of big blockbusters such as Les Miserables”, Phantom and Miss Saigon - The Associated Press. "A Broadway must see! Everything is here to stir the soul - young love, purity, vengeance, villainy, valour - all played out against that historic revolution " - The Connecticut Post RMTC will perform A Tale of Two Cities at The Gracie Fields Theatre from Wednesday 17th - Saturday 20th Feb 2016 (inc Sat matinee). As with past productions this show is set to be a stunningly visual and musical treat for the audience as the society boasts a talented cast of singers and actors.

GRACIE FIELDS THE VOICE

Millions of words have been written about Rochdale’s most famous daughter, Gracie Fields. She topped all the branches of the entertainment industry - music hall/variety, cabaret, theatre, films, records and, later, television. In fact this writer first came across Gracie singing hymns on Yorkshire TV’s Stars On Sunday. Years later I realised that this ‘Lancashire lass’ had an extraordinary singing voice that was too often hidden by her equal talents of humour and mimicry. And yet it is Gracie’s voice that has perhaps lasted longer than the stream of films she made in the 1930’s and early 1940’s.

Gracie had a natural soprano voice that was both powerful and operatic, but also beautiful and pure. The note of top C is possible for a soprano with musical training but Gracie never had singing lessons. Wally Singer has noted that Gracie sings this top C ‘no less than fourteen times’ in her version of ‘I’m Wishing’ from Disney’s Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs! Elsewhere, she imitates a fiddle in ‘An Old Violin’ with tremendous vocal control on very high notes. ‘The Nun’s Chorus’ features serious operatic-style singing, while Gracie sings ‘Danny Boy’ in a convincing and beguiling Irish accent. Gracie Fields appeared at the Holborn Empire Theatre in London on 11th October 1933. Luckily this performance was recorded; it was, in fact, the first time

that a live variety act had ever been recorded. Gracie performs nine songs including the classic ‘Sally’ and ‘The Rochdale Hounds’. Throughout her set, the mood changes from serious to comic, often in the same song! Gracie’s final number, ‘Stormy Weather’ is extraordinary - she starts with a quick and lively scat, briefly jokes with the audience and then sings the lyrics in a serious and very moving way. This may be Gracie at her most personal. It remains perhaps my favourite version of this classic which has also been covered by such greats as Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra and Lena Horne. The term ‘Lancashire Blues’ could be a good way of describing Gracie’s version of ‘Stormy Weather’, but it was also the name of a song that she wrote herself. Gracie’s voice on this recording is a strange mixture of her Lancashire accent and a bluesy approach. Written in America in 1930 while she was feeling homesick, we hear Gracie sing: “Give me some clogs and you can keep all your shoes”. She rejects ‘waffles and corn on the cob’ preferring ‘some hot-pot’ and states convincingly ‘there ain’t no place like home’. Gounod’s ‘Ave Maria’ is much loved in the Catholic Church and it was one of Gracie’s most requested items. Arguably, she did the most to popularise this masterpiece amongst a wider audience. Gracie sings it beautifully, accompanied by a church organ that has to compete with the sheer power of her voice. Her accuracy of pitch was highly unusual for an untrained singer. Gracie had a vocal technique of singing high in the chest register that ordinary singers take years to acquire through constant training and rehearsals. The YouTube website will provide Style readers with a wealth of Gracie’s singing, often taken from the original shellac 78 rpm records. You can also find many of her famous television performances and even entire films here. On the music streaming service Spotify there are literally hundreds of her songs to discover, including the whole of the Holborn Empire show. Start clicking and exploring! There are many CDs available too; but tread carefully as some of these

compilations are from later in Gracie’s career where her voice is not so distinctive.

Gracie’s powerful natural singing voice has retained its appeal through the years. The humour may be an acquired taste to modern audiences. Inevitably, some of her parodies have lost their edge, because we do not all understand the targets for the humour. In the end, it is Gracie’s voice that fascinates us. One critic has said, “she took an infectious pleasure in singing… as if she was only in control of herself on stage, only in charge of language when moulding it for herself in song”. If the proposed statue of Gracie Fields outside the Town Hall does nothing else, I would like it to make people listen to this unique voice more carefully. Thanks to: Wally Singer; Simon Frith; K.S.Lysons; Rochdale Local Studies.

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS THAT MAY WELL CHANGE YOUR LIFE

January 1st. Chances are that you may be waking up with a bit of a sore head and an idea that this is the last time you’re drinking wine…ever. In fact, you’re even going to make it your official New Year’s Resolution for 2016. While abstaining from the demon drink is an admirable idea, here are some others that might be even more beneficial and have an equally positive impact on your happiness, health and professional success. 1.SMILE. Social psychologists say that smiling – even if you’re faking it – can make you happier and healthier. There are two reasons for this. The physical act of smiling stimulates the release of the neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine, and endorphins, which produce positive emotions and help to reduce stress. Basically, the brain senses the movement of our facial muscles and concludes that we must be happy about something, which makes us start to feel happier! Ingenious, right? The other reason is that smiling is – literally – contagious. Studies show that when people are exposed to emotional facial expressions, they tend to unconsciously mimic those expressions, whether positive or negative, which as we already know, can then influence their own emotions. And the biggest plus of sporting a smile is that you appear more approachable, relaxed, attractive and sincere to others, and if you don’t smile, the opposite can be true. So smiling can help you in every aspect of your life, personal and professional, and best of all it’s probably the easiest resolution to make and stick to. 2. GET FIT. Everybody knows that regular exercise has a positive impact on your physical health. It also boosts your mental health too, through reducing stress, fighting disease, and improving mood, energy levels and sleep. To stick to this resolution, pair up with a friend or your partner and be ‘exercise buddies’. This doesn’t mean taking out an expensive membership at the gym that you only use three times though, you can take the dogs for long country walks together, join a swimming or yoga class, or sign up to dancing lessons – try and keep it fun and enjoyable and this will help you stick at it.

3. SCHEDULE ‘ME’ TIME. This is equally (if not more) important than scheduling your professional time. Studies indicate that the most productive employees didn’t let their work life eat into their personal life through putting in long hours of overtime, and took regular breaks away from their desk. This adds up to mean that the best way to improve performance and focus is actually to reserve time to refresh yourself – so schedule time for your family, friends and hobbies and STICK to it. We all know that all work and no play is definitely not a good thing!

28

www.rochdalestyle.com

4. DE-CLUTTER YOUR HOME (AND YOUR LIFE). Christmas is a time for giving and receiving presents. Lots of them. Presents we don’t actually want or need, come to think of it. So make this New Year’s Resolution to declutter your home and relieve it of all those unwanted bubble bath sets and fluffy scarves. Charities will be eager to receive donations of clothing or gifts in new or good condition, so you can feel all warm inside as you rid your home of surplus stuff. Or, if there’s expensive or brand new stuff and you’re feeling thrifty, you could upload your clutter to eBay and recoup some of the cash. Either way you’re the winner, because your home is tidier and an altogether more relaxing environment to live in, and you can actually get to the stuff you want to wear (like that black jumper from 2009 you love so much).

So how to stick to these life changing little resolutions? Research shows that only one in ten of us will achieve our goal. People who fail at their resolutions tend not to have a plan of how to achieve them, or set unrealistic goals that are too difficult to accomplish. The trick is to make small steps rather than resolving to climb Mount Everest by February. Setting small achievable tasks at specific times in your week can make actually maintaining these resolutions possible. Earmark Sunday afternoons for your ‘me time’ and arrange to go for lunch with friends or pamper yourself at home. And instead of trying to declutter your entire wardrobe, start with one chest of drawers this week, and do the shoe cupboard next week. Todo lists are also a great help, because they set down in black and white what you want to get done, filling you with a sense of satisfaction as you tick off each task (or maybe that’s just me). Reward yourself when you achieve all the tasks you’ve set yourself that week, because it will help you maintain your progress. And above all, don’t give up if you have a little lapse! You can always start again tomorrow. It’s all about forming a habit… once these tasks become part of your weekly routine, it’s easy. Rachel Clarke

YOU’LL NEVER FORGET THE FIRST There is nothing I enjoy more than helping people find their ideal car. This week though the call came that I dreaded… a young friend of the family had passed their test and wanted to know what I recommend as his first car. Now we all know you never forget your first - be it kiss, car or speeding ticket - so the weight of responsibility of not landing this poor lad with a lemon for his first motor weighed heavy. After a few days of consideration, mainly during periods of solitary confinement in the house’s smallest room, these are the options I came up with.

VAUXHALL CORSA

The favourite with young drivers since 1993 has just launched its latest incarnation, but for most new drivers it will be a delve through the classifieds to drag up a bargain. A £1,000 budget should get you a nice clean 11-year old 1.2 engined example with average miles 36

www.rochdalestyle.com

of around 75k on the clock. This variant of the Corsa was not known for its glamour, but the sheer numbers still on the road prove it was well put together; just compare it with similar-aged Ford KAs, many of which have long rusted away. The interior is once again utilitarian but everything is

there you might need and whilst the engine is no match for an F1 car (of course not including the McLarenHonda), it is punchy and reliable. Watch out though for cars which have been modified; I would walk away from any car gracing a body kit modelled on the Millennium Falcon, or anything which has seen the engine ‘tuned’. Vauxhall’s of this era also had the annoying habit of eating cambelts, which are due every 40,000 miles or three years, so ensure that a prospective purchase has recent service history, if not complete.

PEUGEOT 108

Whilst investigating the traditional options, I ran an insurance quote for myself, aged 18 and what came out was a cost per month equivalent to what my wife pays in a year for her two-seater roadster. The days of adding your dad or other aged family member to significantly reduce premiums are long gone but thanks to Peugeot, there is another way. Peugeot run a lease scheme known as ‘Just add fuel’ which provides a car and all the costs, such as servicing, maintenance, road tax and most crucially Insurance all rolled into one package. A phone call to the local dealer revealed they would cover an 18year-old, although parental assurances for the finance agreement would be needed. The cost for a brand new 108 1.0-litre? £500 deposit and then £149

per month for three years, at the end of which the car goes back and either you start again or walk away with (hopefully) three years’ worth of no claims bonus available. Now, this option will take some convincing of the young lad as whilst the 108 is a fantastic little city car, with an eager 1.0-litre engine producing nearly the same amount of power as the 1.2 in the Corsa we mentioned earlier, it doesn’t have the same street cred appeal as the Vauxhall. It does offer more peace of mind to the parents though, as there will be no expensive repair bills, no sleepless nights at MOT time and the insurance premium won’t force mum into getting a second job.

VW BEETLE

Not the latest style statement from Wolfsburg but the classic one! As an owner of a couple of classics I know that, for reasons I’m not entirely sure about, they are extremely cheap to insure. A quick glance through the classifieds finds an original 1302s variant used as a daily driver with plenty of MOT on sale for £2,200 or probably £2k

with a bit of friendly bartering. A quick insurance quote on this comes out half the price of the Vauxhall Corsa. Now style is an individual thing but if the VW doesn’t float the boat then there will be something in the classic world that does. Of course, maintenance and reliability is going to cause more headache (and heartache) than the Vauxhall or Peugeot but there is no need to worry about depreciation in many cases and if the car is manufactured pre-1975 the road tax is free too. We must of course address the elephant in the room and that is safety; I was amongst the majority of my friends that managed to write off their first car, mine in particularly spectacular fashion involving ice, a dry stone wall and an escaping dairy herd. The VW or many of its peers will not offer much in the line of crash protection, certainly no way equivalent to the Corsa or the 108, but saying that, the Herbie-alike will in no way match the speeds the modern cars could achieve either. MORE HELP TO ‘GO DIGITAL’ AS FESTIVAL RETURNS

Following the success of this year’s Rochdale Digital Festival the event - aimed at de-mystifying technology and showing just how useful, easy and fun it can be - will return in 2016. The free event is at Number One Riverside in Rochdale town centre on Saturday 27 February and there will also be events and activities across the borough.

Organised by Rochdale Borough Council, the festival is designed to improve people’s digital skills with hands-on help and advice for all age groups.

You will be able to find out how to do online banking, how to browse products, shop or read a book online, and get tips on using smartphones and tablets. There will also be demonstrations of how residents can use the council website to avoid making telephone calls or face-to-face visits. There will be friendly faces on hand to show how easy it can be and tablets, phones and computers will be available for people to try.

The event will feature many local businesses, organisations, charities, volunteer groups and educational establishments. Rochdale Digital Festival is being held as part of BeOnline 2016 – a national two week campaign to help people discover the internet and how it can help them make 2016 a year of transformation.

Councillor Neil Emmott, the council’s Cabinet Member for Corporate Services and Neighbourhoods, said: “Digital technology is everywhere and using it can save time and money. It can also make things like finding a job or information a lot easier, so getting to grips with using it has never been more important. This year’s Digital Festival helped hundreds of local people and the feedback was really positive. The event will provide a really useful hands-on interactive experience, and help people understand in a straightforward no nonsense way. Digital technology has become integrated into every aspect of society and is so important in terms of education, life chances, jobs and saving people money and time.”

C

hristmas beauty tips

Here are my top five tips for Christmas to ensure you are looking your best this season…

1. SMOOTH AND POLISH Tans, whether real or fake, will now be starting to fade - this can often look unsightly and leave the skin feeling rough and uneven. The solution is regular exfoliation and moisture - this can be done at the salon with lovely treatments such as a body polish. To maintain this sumptuously smooth skin at home I would recommend Darphin perfecting body scrub (£29) which can be used weekly in the shower. Smooth skin also makes a great base for your next tan; whether you have a winter holiday planned or would like a tan for your Christmas party, it will sit perfectly on your soft smooth skin and last much longer. 2. NOURISH Snowflakes will soon be falling from the sky but let those be the only flakes you see this winter. If you suffer from an itchy flaking scalp, dry split ends or have dry/coloured hair then I would recommend a hair and scalp oil, which contains nourishing and repairing oils such as an argan oil. I would recommend Darphin’s Revitalising Oil (£24) which is a beautiful indulgent oil packed with essential oils and argan. It can also be applied to the face and body to nourish and leave your skin youthful and glowing. 3. BRIGHTEN As a result of the extremities our skin faces in winter the complexion can be left dull and sallow. We all long for a youthful, bright complexion, which can be achieved by ridding the skin of dead cells and adding moisture to the skin to re-plump and revitalise.

4. TRY SOMETHING NEW Christmas is a lovely time of year, with lots of social events to attend… so why not try a body wrap to make sure you look slinky this season? I would recommend Shrinking Violet body wrap, an inch loss wrap with amazing results. You can loose inches after just one treatment although a course is recommended for best results - make sure there's extra room in your little black dress to squeeze in a little Christmas pudding or your favourite party treat. 5. UPDATE YOUR MAKE UP It’s the perfect time to update your make up bag, transitioning your colours from summer brights to warm winter shades and rich deeps. And when was the last time you changed your mascara? If more than a few months you won't be getting the best results. If you would like more volume in your lashes then I would recommend Volumising Mascara by HD Brows (£17) with its unique dual-ended mascara wand, it lifts and thickens the lashes - perfect for the festive season. If you don't feel confident applying your own make up ask for a lesson or maybe even treat yourself to a professional make up application to ensure your make up is flawless for your Christmas party.

Merry Christmas to all our Style followers and our clients old and new; we hope you all have a wonderful magical Christmas. Emma Fitton The Retreat

I would recommend a facial by your therapist. Facials include a thorough exfoliation which leaves the skin bright and polished; hydrating serums and moisturisers are applied to quench the skin and leave it feeling soothed, comfortable and nourished. DISCOVER LITTLEBOROUGH LIBRARY

Littleborough Library has

been providing books,

information and much more for the local community for over

100 years. Situated in Hare Hill Park, the library must have one

of the most beautiful settings for such a building in Britain.

The library opened in 1903

thanks to a generous grant from the Carnegie Foundation and was an annexe to Harehill

House. The rest of Harehill House was used as council

offices until quite recently and

new uses are now being

explored by the MoorEnd Development Trust.

Despite its proud history, Littleborough Library is bang up to date with modern facilities and technology. An access ramp and automatic doors make it easy for wheelchairs and buggies to enter the building. A large information screen is above the long counter and behind the desk is usually the welcoming presence of Shabana Afzal, senior library and information assistant. In the reading room on the right, there is a lovely timeless atmosphere with a large wooden table alongside three computers. These computers are linked to the People Network with free access to the online teaching module, learnmyway. They also offer sessions on how to use laptops, tablets and iPads. There is free Wi-Fi and Internet access. In the same room are reference books, Ordnance Survey maps, Rochdale Council documents and lots of information leaflets.

Several times a week this room is taken over (in the best sense) by a wide range of activities. There is a coffee morning every Tuesday between 10am and midday; a Watercolour and Art Group on Friday mornings and a Saturday morning reading group. Once a month, there are writing and poetry groups on Monday afternoons. Every Tuesday at 10am the library is also the meeting point for a 60 or 90 minute walk which is part of the Living Well/Walking For Health initiative. There are fortnightly drop-ins

with the Big Life Group where health trainers can support people on healthy lifestyles - monitoring blood pressure, talking about nutrition and increasing exercise.

Back in the main part of the library is the children’s section; a large and colourful space that is a well used and much loved facility. Everyone knows that children love books and there are enough choices here to satisfy the most active bookworm! On Friday afternoons in term time there is Storytime for the Under-5’s between 2.30 and 3.30. More computers are at the side of this area for all ages to use.

In the adult section there is a wide selection of fiction and non-fiction books. Crime fiction is the most popular genre, but all tastes are catered for here. There are also large print books, audio books and graphic novels.

The phrase ‘community hub’ is very fashionable at the moment and often misused or over-used, however, Littleborough Library is a true hub of the community where people of all ages mingle to use these excellent facilities. Another bonus is the free, unlimited parking outside the library so there is no need to waste time finding a space, feeding coins into a hungry machine or looking out for traffic wardens!

Richard Lysons

Littleborough Library is open Monday; Tuesday and Friday 9.30 am – 5.30 pm (closed for lunch 1pm – 2pm). On Mondays the library closes at 7.30 pm. It is also open on Saturday mornings from 9.30 to 12.30. telephone: 01706 378219. 48

RSPCa NEWS

RSPCa Rochdale & District Branch Registered Charity no. 232257

a Pet iS FoR LiFe, Not JuSt FoR CHRiStMaS

once again, thoughts may be turning to buying something cute and cuddly for the children for Christmas - not the latest soft toy but the real thing… maybe a puppy, kitten or rabbit. But please - DoN’t. there are many reasons why Christmas is a bad time to introduce a new pet into the family but particularly all the noise and excitement will frighten and confuse them. once Christmas is over many abandoned animals end up being brought to animal centres. Please consider adopting one of these poor animals after the Christmas holidays are over. Your local RSPCA is based at the Rochdale Animal Centre, on Redcross Street, where at any one time there are already at least 70 cats and kittens needing loving homes, plus rabbits, guinea pigs and other small animals. The cost of caring for them has risen and the money raised comes from the people of Rochdale, either through donations or from sales in the branch’s charity shops.

You can help support the work of the centre by donating money to either help cover these rising costs or buy the animals a Christmas meal, or you can donate goods to our shops.

CHRISTMAS PRESENTS FOR YOUR PETS

Many of you will be thinking of presents for your pets so why not check out those available on the RSPCA online shop by following the link on the home page www.rspca-rochdale.org.uk.

FIREWORKS OVER CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR - QUICK TIPS TO HELP YOU AND YOUR PET WE ADVISE:

• For any pet, whether it be a dog, cat, rabbit or rodent, make sure you provide suitable hiding places with extra bedding where they can feel safe. This is also true for animals that live outside. • Close all windows and curtains. • Play music or put on the television to muffle the fireworks. • Make sure they’re kept in a safe place during any display. • Never punish or fuss over them as it can make things worse. • Make sure your pets are microchipped in case they escape. • Give your dog their walk earlier in the day. • Never ever take a dog to a fireworks display – even if they don’t make noise – it’s still highly likely to be a stressful situation for them. • Pheromone diffusers may help dogs and cats feel calmer.

ReCeNt eveNtS

Our Autumn Fair held at the animal centre was hugely successful and raised over £600. Thank you to all our supporters, staff and volunteers for making it such a success. A stall at Bacup vintage market raised over £200. Thank you to Gemma, one of our shop managers for organising and running the stall. Our volunteers also raised £156 at Pets at Home. All these events highlight the importance of volunteers in the work we do. We especially need volunteers in all our shops and for helping at fundraising events. If you feel you could help please contact your nearest RSPCA charity shop, (a list is on our website), or ring the animal centre on 01706 861897 for more information on how you can help.

For advice or information on any of the above please ring the RSPCA on 01706 861897, check the website www.rspca-rochdale.org.uk or find us on facebook. | Rochdale Animal Centre, 1 Redcross St, Rochdale OL12 0NZ www.rochdalestyle.com

This event allows Deckers chefs to step out of their usual busy kitchens into the intense arena of competition cooking. Tested on their ingredient knowledge, technical ability, and ability to create restaurant standard dishes from mystery ingredients, the standard this year was exceptional. Executive Chef Rob Walker said, “I’m proud to say we had a record number of entries this year. It’s great to see the creativity and level of ability we as a group have within our kitchen teams… It was a very close final, with Stephen Taylor, John Careswell & Kris Starr, the other very worthy finalists”.

Kickstarting A Comic Christmas Carol

Drawn in comic strip form and written in rhyme by David mcCluskey, this new version will be funded via kickstarter, the american benefit corporation based in Brooklyn, new york, which has built a global crowdfunding platform focused on creativity. e company’s mission is to help bring creative projects to life. Joe hopes to have the kickstarter project ready to run through December and make the most of people's festive nature. To help promote the project Joe got the idea to produce a real life video. Getting

a 'dream team' to produce the video turned out to be quite easy. Joe turned to Jo Whitehead of Twowhiteheads Photography whom he had collaborated with on previous projects to film the sequence and Style Magazine’s very own Colin Meredith to play Mr Scrooge himself. Colin came up with the idea of using the Rochdale Town Hall as a perfect location and Dorothy Johnstone from the Town Hall was eager to help and was able to make the space available. Props were gathered from various sources to make the shoot look authentic; George Kelsall’s Book Shop in Littleborough lent them some 200-year-old books; Gary Trainor, an antique dealer, lent them candlesticks and inkwells and Nicola Matthews let them borrow her father’s old coins.

Joe commented: “It was a great collaboration and the final video looked

brilliant. I will be adding some animation and the video will be available to watch via Kickstarter and on Joe's facebook page -

SPRINGHILL HOSPICE

rochdale News & events Springhill’s very first Traditional Country Fete was a fantastic success. Again the sun came out and so did the good people of the committee. Watch out for next year’s fete which will include a huge dog show! The date for your diary is 5th June 2016.

It’s been an exciting and fruitful year for the Fundraising Team at Springhill Hospice. Whilst keeping abreast of the changes in the world of fundraising events but always being mindful that supporters like their old favourite, the team have spent their time trying something old, something new, something borrowed… but nothing blue! An old favourite which was resurrected three years ago is the Summer Serenade. This year even more music lovers brought their chairs, blankets and picnics to the lawns in the Hospice’s award winning grounds. Hundreds of people sat back, relaxed and enjoyed music from Rochdale’s Wind Band, Heywood Choir ‘The Voice’, Greater Manchester Police Male Voice Choir and soloist Shelley Byrne. Dark clouds disappeared, the sun lit the night sky and the event raised over £1220.00. Next year’s Summer Serenade will be on Saturday 23rd July.

What coming up in December 2015…. Springhill will be celebrating 10 years of Santa’s around Hollingworth Lake. Last year 400 Santas dashed or dawdled around the lake raising £15,500 for the Hospice. This year they’re hoping to break the 500 barrier. Sunday 13th December at Hollingworth Lake Visitors Centre. Registration from 10.00 am, event starts at 11.00 am. This year there’s some added extras – best dressed dog and kids can ‘Catch the Turkey/Christmas Pudding’. Contact Fundraising 01706 641790 for more information or register online www.springhill.org.uk/santa-dash-or-dawdle-2015. You can get loads of information about Springhill Hospice and their fundraising efforts on the new, improved website www.springhill.org.uk or follow them on Facebook www.facebook.com/springhillhospice.

5K FOR JIMMY’S BIG DAY

There was plenty to celebrate at Cowm Reservoir, Whitworth, recently when comedian Jimmy Cricket kick-started a 5k charity race to coincide with his 70th birthday. Over one hundred runners put their best foot forward and tackled two laps of the Whitworth landmark.

Local resident Jo Davies was determined to take part after she had been warned by her doctor her health was at risk if she didn’t lose weight. Spurred on by family and friends, Jo and friend Sam Young completed the run in 39 minutes. In April Jo started exercising and eating more healthily and has lost 32lb. Through sponsorship from family and friends she raised £1,000.

Jimmy said: “I was honoured the race was organised for my 70th birthday. It’s been a wonderful day and a great way to celebrate with the community and my many Rochdale friends. I am thrilled the event has raised funds for such a worthy cause as Francis House.”
